Hot Springs, Arkansas Itinerary: How To Spend an Ideal 3-Day Weekend

Hot Springs, Arkansas Itinerary: How To Spend a 3-Day Weekend

While Hot Springs may be a mystery to some, many local visitors and travelers from nearby states like Texas, Louisiana, and Missouri have been traveling to Hot Springs (yes, it’s actually the name of a city) or “the Valley of the Vapors” for rest and rejuvenation for eons.

Soaking in the famed geological hot springs is said to release any muscle tension or stress from your body. The natural thermal water flows from 47 springs on the western slope of Hot Springs Mountain. These waters flow out of the ground at 147 degrees and are thought to possess medicinal properties. Several early Native American tribes praised these waters as a source of strength.

Bathhouse Row was created in the early 1800s and it has been a wellness destination ever since. In fact, in the late-1800s through the mid-1900s (especially in the 1930s), Hot Springs was a popular place for Al Capone, Frank Costello and other famous mobsters to unwind on Bathhouse Row. It was considered a safe zone and there was a mutual agreement with law enforcement that they could visit unbothered, as long as they didn’t cause trouble.

With domestic travel becoming so popular given the circumstances of the past year, the reach of Hot Springs visitors has expanded vastly. It’s the perfect destination to cleanse any lingering stress from the past year. No mob activity necessary.

If you’re considering spending a long weekend in Hot Springs, Arkansas, we’ve mapped out the perfect 3 days for you below. You can also take a look at current flight deals into the Hot Springs area (HOT or LIT airports) , and see recommended hotels ranging from luxury to quaint bed and breakfasts .

Hot Springs, Arkansas Itinerary: How To Spend a 3-Day Weekend

Depending on your starting point, you will most likely fly into Little Rock . Car rentals and services are available to take you to your final destination an hour away in Hot Springs!

As you drive, take in the Ouachita Mountains, Hot Springs Mountain, and Diamond Lakes area from 1,256 feet above sea level at the Hot Springs Mountain Tower . Not only does it offer a bird’s eye view of the National Park and the natural springs that provide the thermal mineral water for all the spas in downtown Hot Springs, but it also serves as a museum.

Before checking into your hotel, take a quick hike on the Northwoods Trail . While there are 26 miles of world-class mountain biking and hiking trails, there are also loops that are 4 miles or less to choose from. If you are looking for something more athletic, the Northwoods system (home to the annual Gudrun MTB Festival each November) includes Green, Blue and Black single track, multi-track, flow trails, jump lines and the Lucky 13 expert section. The Cedar Glades trailhead includes a bike skills park.

Check in to Lookout Point Lakeside Inn . The lakeside setting is a place to zen out and enter a meditative state on the hammocks and lounge chairs dotted along rolling hills and manicured gardens overlooking the water. A garden path leads to a secluded waterfall to settle near. Inside, use the spa products in your in-room jacuzzi and then slip into the provided robe and pour a glass of wine to enjoy next to your fireplace. If you are feeling social, pop downstairs for happy hour. Bath House Row Winery is served alongside a lovely spread of cheese and fruit, flatbreads and other specials.

The inn offers just about any outdoor activity you can think of—waterfront yoga, kayaking, canoeing, pedal boating, hiking their state park trailhead entrance, ziplining, and even diamond and crystal hunting. Your workout routine will not be put on the back burner on this vacation.

3 Day Long Weekend Itinerary for Visiting Hot Springs Arkansas

Wake up refreshed and grab some breakfast at the inn or grab a smoothie from Ram Nutrition .

You’ve seen the National Park from above, but make sure you check it out on foot. The 47 mineral hot springs, pumping one million gallons of water a day, are showcased in protected forested land. The Goat Rock Trail is a 2.4 mile out and back hike that unfolds into a sea of wildflowers and vistas of Indian Mountain and east Hot Springs.

For lunch, fresh salads and lite fare can be found at Cafe 1217 with highlights such as the Ancho Almond Quinoa Salad with fresh raspberries or the Lemon Basil Chicken Salad with sun-dried tomatoes.

Enjoy a traditional bath at Buckstaff Bathhouse . Built in the Roman Gothic style of architecture, the Buckstaff opened in 1912, and currently, it remains the only operational traditional bathhouse of the original eight on Bathhouse Row . Unlike any spa service you might be used to, a traditional bath includes the use of thermal mineral water in a whirlpool mineral bath with a loofah mitt scrub, then a series of different saunas and water therapies before a 20-minute full-body massage. Altogether the treatment takes about an hour and a half.

Walk a few steps to enjoy a refreshing beer at Superior Bathhouse Brewery and Distillery . As mentioned above, many of the bathhouses are no longer operational but are considered landmarks and have stayed aesthetically the same since the late 1800s/early 1900s. After lying vacant for 30 years, the Superior Bathhouse was re-imagined as a brewery, craft beer tasting room, full-service restaurant and event venue. Most interesting is that they were the world’s first to utilize the thermal spring water as a main ingredient.

For this evening, have dinner at Eden in Hotel Hale . Another great bathhouse modification, Hotel Hale is a newly restored boutique hotel that includes nine suites right on Bathhouse Row. The therapeutic waters can be taken advantage of in each suite. The restaurant, Eden, has an eclectic decor vibe with black and white tile floors, set against bright teal walls and a massive skylight from which hanging plants cascade above the tables.

Enjoy a plant-based breakfast at Kollective Coffee + Tea . Kollective is a 3rd-wave coffee and tea house that strives to use organic and non-GMO ingredients.

Then, stroll through Garvan Woodland Gardens . Nestled in the picturesque Ouachita Mountains, the 210-acre gardens are a gift from local industrialist and philanthropist Verna Cook Garvan. Each turn is stunning and serene—from the powerful nature-driven chapel and the floating treehouse of renowned architect E. Fay Jones (who honed his skills as an architect working alongside Frank Lloyd Wright) to the manicured Japanese gardens and koi ponds. Make sure to say hi to Handsome George the peacock.

Enjoy a mineral bath at Quapaw Baths . The newest bath and spa to Hot Springs, Quapaw offers four large capacity thermal mineral water pools of varying temperatures, as well as a recently opened private bathing area. Take breaks and grab a cold beverage or a snack at the canteen. They offer spa services as well, or you can opt to check out the brand new Astral Spa at Oaklawn Luxury Resort . The crystal-infused spa treatments are uniquely Hot Springs—Geologists say that Arkansas and Brazil have the best quality quartz on Earth.

At this point, you should be so relaxed that you could forgo the airport and float home.

12 of the Best Hot Springs in the United States

Warm up at these unique hot springs around the country.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

hot springs day trips

No matter the season, natural hot springs offer relaxing, geothermal waters in often scenic settings. Across the country, you can find them to fit every travel preference, whether you're looking to take a dip in nature after a hike or prefer a spa-like experience. From Alaskan pools perfect for viewing the northern lights to the national park named for its geothermal waters, here are 12 of the best hot springs in the United States.

Of course, hot springs can be very dangerous, so use caution and only swim where you know it's safe.

Calistoga, California

Located in beautiful Napa Valley, Calistoga is known for its abundant hot springs. Several resorts in the area offer mineral pools where visitors can enjoy the waters. Calistoga Spa Hot Springs , for example, has four geothermal mineral pools, including a warm lap pool. For those looking for a luxurious stay during their wine country trip, Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection is home to an expansive spa with a bathhouse featuring geothermal pools of ranging temperatures.

Hot Springs State Park, Thermopolis, Wyoming

Named Thermopolis ("hot city" in ancient Greek) for its many natural hot springs, this town is home to Hot Springs State Park . Visitors can soak in the public bathhouse's 104-degree waters for free. Keep an eye out for bison, and be sure to check out the petroglyphs at Legend Rock while you're there.

Travertine Hot Springs, Bridgeport, California

Take in views of the Sierra Nevadas while soaking in the natural Travertine Hot Springs near Bridgeport. Located on California state park land off of Route 395, these small, rustic pools are the perfect stop after a day of hiking.

Warm Springs Pools, Virginia

The main pool here is enclosed by a stunning octagonal stone basin originally built in 1761. Guests soak under the skylight of a domed ceiling inside the Gentlemen’s Bathhouse, believed to be the oldest spa structure in the U.S. A second bathhouse was built in the 1870s. Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Franklin D. Roosevelt reportedly visited Warm Springs Pools back in the day. Both bathhouses are owned and operated by The Omni Homestead Resort and reopened in 2023 after extensive renovations.

Chena Hot Springs Resort, Fairbanks, Alaska

One of the more remote soaking spots on this list, Chena Hot Springs Resort is located in Fairbanks, Alaska. The resort offers interesting activities all year, including the Aurora Ice Museum, but we recommend visiting during the winter months. The hot springs offer a cozy respite from Alaska's bitter temperatures, and you might even spot the northern lights as you soak.

Dunton Hot Springs, Dolores, Colorado

Dunton Hot Springs , an 1800s ghost town-turned-upscale resort, offers a variety of hot pools in a picturesque setting. Soak inside the bathhouse or in an outdoor spring, or book the Well House for your own private hot springs experience.

Yellowstone Hot Springs, Montana

Vince Fergus/Travel + Leisure

After safely viewing the thermal basins and geysers from a distance at Yellowstone National Park, experience a dip in some geothermal waters for yourself. You cannot soak in the national park's hot springs, as they can be very dangerous, but you can go for a dip in the warm mineral waters of the Yellowstone Hot Springs in Montana, which is a 30-minute drive from the park's North Entrance.

Castle Hot Springs, Arizona

This dreamy resort is the ideal destination for travelers looking for a luxurious hot springs experience. Secluded pools are located within the beautiful desert landscape, offering stunning scenery for soaking; and an all-inclusive stay here comes with farm-to-table meals, access to the springs, and activities like guided hikes and farm tours.

Utah Crater, Midway, Utah

Utah Crater  is a unique beehive-shaped limestone crater containing a 65-foot-deep hot pool. It's so deep that the crater has become a major diving destination and claims to be the only place in the U.S. where you can scuba dive in warm water. Don't worry, though: plenty of people go just to swim and soak at the surface.

Hot Springs National Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas

No list of hot springs in the U.S. would be complete without Hot Springs National Park , located in Hot Springs, Arkansas. See the thermal water in its natural setting at the Display Spring or Hot Water Cascade before visiting Bathhouse Row. There are no outdoor hot springs suitable for bathing at this park, but you can visit the nearby Buckstaff Bathhouse or Quapaw Baths to soak in the geothermal waters.

Glenwood Springs, Colorado

With mountains, lakes, and a canyon, Glenwood Springs has outdoor activities for everyone. Once you've spent a day hiking or hitting the slopes, take a dip in one of the hot springs. Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is the most famous because it's home to the world's largest mineral hot springs pool. Iron Mountain Hot Springs features a bathhouse and 16 geothermal pools overlooking the Rocky Mountains.

Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

Uniquely named Truth or Consequences (aka "T or C"), this spot known for its hot springs, which are fed by a rift along the Rio Grande. The pools around here are mostly commercially owned, and the ones at Riverbend Hot Springs are arguably the most appealing. Pick from a string of pools, varying from 95 to 107 degrees, ideally set along the river for a seriously serene soak in "healing" spring water.

Tuscan Thermal Hot Springs

Natural warm water baths.

Tuscany has the highest number of thermal centers in all Italy , several of these establishments throughout the territory are a much sought after destination for a relaxing vacation - the perfect addition to a holiday in appreciation of art and nature. You will find natural baths whose temperatures go from 25° and 54° and with therapeutic properties aimed to treat vascular, rheumatic, respiratory, and urinary diseases known across the world.

Why is all this true? Because of the (ex-)volcanic activity which left a wealth of bubbling hot stuff underground.  Read our article about the birth of the Tuscan Hot Springs .

When to visit the hot springs?

You don't need to be sick to enjoy spending some time soaking in the special hot water! When we are constantly bombarded with stress, or we are tired and feeling lethargic, these are physical signs that our body is sending us signals that we need to slow down and relax.

However, any time of the year is good, and they are particularly appreciated during the fall and winter. You'll have a chance to relax surrounded by some of the most beautiful, breathtaking natural landscapes in the world. All of them also have modern indoor centers that provide complete services dedicated to wellness and beauty, including massages - so don't wait any longer and start planning your visit with our suggestions!

hot springs day trips

A vacation at the thermal waters in Tuscany can transport you from the chaos of the city, the frenetic rhythm of everyday life and gives you a chance to listen to your body and immerse yourself in a situation which encourages you to commune with nature . The great thing about the thermal water spas in Tuscany is that they are always close enough to make a day trip to a quaint medieval hamlet, a city of art or history or even a trip in the panoramic countryside very very easy .

hot springs day trips

Siena and the Val d'Orcia

The province of Siena is the richest area of natural thermal waters in all Tuscany: here, you will be able to take care of your body as well as explore a stupendous territory, characterized by the gentle hills of the Val d’Orcia (a UNESCO World Heritage Site ), in particular the Crete Senesi and the green mountain of Mount Amiata .

Between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto, the natural thermal waters of Saturnia and Petriolo offer a variety of choices for enjoying total relax and curative wellness, from the free hot thermal pools amidst nature, to the luxurious and modern centers offering all kind of treatments.

Set in south of Siena is Bagno Vignoni and it is one of the oldest and most famous thermal locations of the region, well known for its Roman period pool situated in the center of the main square and surrounded by a landscape of rare beauty. The little hamlet is a short distance from San Quirico, Castiglione d’Orcia and Pienza , perfect destinations for a wine-and-food tour in the area.

hot springs day trips

Located at a short distance from Bagno Vignoni, there’s another thermal location that is worth a visit, Bagni San Filippo , offering two different types of thermal waters: sulfurous, gushing out from Acqua Bianca rocks , and wonderful waters of the White Whale pools , both in the outdoors.

HOW TO ARRIVE: Chianciano Terme can be reached by the Autostrada A1. Take the exit Chiusi-Chianciano Terme. If you are arriving by train, go to Chiusi – Chianciano Terme, the establishment is approximately 17 km from the station. The closest airport is San Francesco in Assisi near Perugia and l'Amerigo Vespucci at Florence Peretola.

Another visit could include Chianciano Terme found at the base of Tuscany, and certainly an evocative scenery. Set between Val d’Orcia and Valdichiana , it’s the perfect thermal base for exploring the surroundings, where you’ll find other famous and wonderful destinations of Tuscany, such as Montalcino , Pienza and Montepulciano .

Over the years it became well recognized for liver problems and hydroponic treatments . Though for many this area is associated with doctor's recommendation for health care, liver treatments, beneficial drinking water and even sports rehabilitation there are many beauty care treatments that one can reserved, At the Terme di Chianciano the Parco Acqua Santa is open all year long and the cost varies according to the period however it still manages to keep the price down. Visit the official website for more information and events.

hot springs day trips

Since you are so close to these is  Siena , the home to the most famous palio in the world, is the perfect town to combine with you search for thermal pools. Besides its beautiful architectural and artistic treasures, it’s also very renowned for its traditional cakes, typical of Christmas time, such as panforte , panpepato , ricciarelli , cavallucci and copate ... all worthy of tasting and enjoying, believe me (see the end of this article for more info on the the cakes).

More Free Thermal Pools

Close to the borders between Chianti and Val di Chiana , there’s Rapolano Terme , a little town surrounded by the marvellous Crete Senesi and well-known for the two thermal spas of San Giovanni and Antica Querciolaia , which offer innovative and modern wellness treatments, as well as the latest technologies for specific diseases.

Going south towards the border with Umbria, there are the more pools which still use the same Roman foundations at San Casciano dei Bagni , third in Europe for its water flow (42 thermal springs gushing out at an average temperature of 40 degrees) and included in the Borghi più belli d’Italia , the prettiest villages in Italy. This is an official list for particular, wonderful urban centers that are architectural and artistic jewels. This is a town which actually deserves more than just a short visit: its old city center is really amazing, the spas offer quality and special welcome to guests (that’s why it has also gained the Bandiera Arancione, Orange Flag, award) and its food is delicious !! Besides the classic products such as wine and olive oil, there are many traditional recipes that you shouldn’t miss trying. In particular, I recommend you try i Ciaffagnoni, large water and flour pancakes fried and either covered with sugar or with pecorino cheese, the choice is up to you!!

Between Florence, Pisa and Lucca

HOW TO ARRIVE: Terme della Via Francigena can be reached by the Autostrada A1. Take the exit FI-PI-LI, direction Livorno follow exits for Castelfiorentino and then Gambassi-Terme. If you are arriving by train, go to Castelfiorentino, and then the bus to Gambassi-Terme. Click here for English brochure

Moving north towards Florence , close to the homeland of Renaissance par excellence, there’s Gambassi Terme , thermal location surrounded by the Val d’Elsa landscape, whose thermal establishments, dating back to the past century, have been recently restored and are particularly indicated for the treatments of digestive diseases. These are the very same water used by the pilgrims on the via Francigena .

Near Pisa , one of the historical bitter enemies of Florence, you’ll find Casciana Terme with its beautiful thermal village, and the curative hot (about 37 degrees) waters of San Giuliano Terme , known since the Roman era. Pisa with its famous Square of Miracles and Leaning Tower is just a short distance away, and Lucca , known as the town of one-hundred churches, home to the delicious buccellato and the walls you can stroll on, is only 15 minutes drive away from the hot springs.

hot springs day trips

Situated a stone’s throw from Lucca, Montecatini and Monsummano Terme (province of Pistoia), there are two historic and renowned thermal locations: the former used to be a popular destination for VIPs from all around the world, especially at the beginning of the last century, who were attracted by the curative properties of its waters as well as the quality, luxurious accommodation offered in the town. The latter is very well-known as well, thanks to its innovative and modern spa, the Grotta Giusti. The name comes from a natural thermal cave, whose curative steam is still used today to offer thermal baths and other kind of wellness treatments.

Though famous in name Montecatini is still a very economic offer where you can immerse yourself in the thermal waters. It is possible to add specific therapies including options with perfumed oils, personalized face or anti-aging masks or even an intensive anti-cellulite program all of which can last up to one hour.

If you prefer a bit more physical activity as opposed to just a beauty spa care, prices become even more interesting. Participate in water gym, Hydrobike or even Yoga or Pilates. Read here for more detailed information

Terme di Casciana in the heart of the hills around Pisa.  Especially famous in this area is   Acqua termale Mathelda , whose benefits are well documented in history.  Particularly noted for its exceptionally good therapy for motor skill rehabilitation, cardiovascular and respiratory treatment. The establishment in Casciana is just a short distance from the splendid walls of Volterra and the small town of Lari, noted for its rare beauty and excellent conservation.

hot springs day trips

Going southwest along the coast, along what is commonly referred to as the Costa degli Etruschi (or "Etruscan coast" for all the archeological remains unearthed over years belonging to one of the most important Etruscan settlements in all of Italy), there’s Venturina , another special thermal location. For all those who are planning a thermal vacation (to enjoy both relaxation as well as take advantage of the curative powers of its waters) in a marvelous location, Venturina would be the perfect base for exploring the fantastic seasides and the "sauvage" nature of the Maremma .

We’ve reached the end of our virtual thermal tour around Tuscany and hope you’ve found some interesting ideas for visiting Tuscany during the fall and winter. Even if the sun might not be shining, you will be nice and warm while you soak in Tuscany's warm thermal and relaxing hot springs :-)

Here is the ultimate hot springs road trip in Colorado

Chill out (and heat up) at the Centennial State’s best mineral pools.

Coloradans like to boast about having higher red blood cell counts than their sea level–dwelling counterparts. This is true: At an average elevation of almost 7,000 feet, the body is forced to do more with less oxygen.

But there’s another secret behind that healthy, hardy Coloradan glow. Balneotherapy, or the use of natural hot springs to ease muscle aches and mental stress, has been around since ancient times. Native Americans sought out Colorado ’s soothing mineral vapors long before the silver miners showed up in the late 1800s. ( Read why Japanese snow monkeys soak in hot springs, just like us. )

This 388-mile hot springs route connects the Centennial State’s most beautiful and balmy bathing spots.

Map of a Colorado hot springs road trip

Drive from Steamboat Springs to Boulder and soak in the healing waters of Colorado’s hot springs along the way.

Stop 1: Steamboat Springs

Start in downtown Steamboat Springs , which has blossomed lately with a spate of craft cocktail bars and small-plate dining rooms (try The Laundry ). Then head to Mad Creek Trail , a serene hiking loop outside of town, where you’ll pass sage-scented meadows and aspen groves before reaching Strawberry Park Hot Springs , an open-air spa and campsite. Once the sun goes down, the pools switch to clothing optional—so be ready to check your inhibitions at the door. ( Discover more of the best experiences in Colorado. )

Stop 2: Glenwood Springs

Since 1888, the town of Glenwood Springs has held the title for the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool. For something more intimate, check out Iron Mountain ’s 16 pocket-size pools. The hottest one (108°F) pairs perfectly with a can of Durango-brewed Modus Hoperandi from the on-site café.

Stop 3: Buena Vista

Sitting between the Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide is Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort , a cozy, year-round retreat built on a 120°F artesian well. To access the springs, you’ll have to climb down into a creek and wade around the shallow rocky pools until you find the right mix of scalding jets and cold water. ( Dive into the world’s best swimming pools. )

Stop 4: Leadville

Continue your ascent through the Rockies with a mid-morning stop at Leadville, America’s highest incorporated city at 10,578 feet. On Harrison Avenue, the main drag, stroll past the grand facade of the historic Tabor Opera House , where Harry Houdini once performed, then settle in at a booth at the Golden Burro Cafe . Breakfast at this Old West saloon is no joke—try the “golden burro-ito,” a missile-size pouch of eggs and potatoes slathered with green chili sauce and melted cheese, or the chicken-fried steak and eggs, topped with house-made sausage gravy. ( Here’s everything to know about Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park.)

Stop 5: Boulder

Boulder balances the buzz of a modern metropolis with the tranquillity of a close connection to nature. Nowhere is that dual spirit more evident than at the Boulder Farmers Market , a weekly ritual where multiple generations of local farmers mix (from April to November) with artisan food trucks. You can fill up on samples, including Fortuna Chocolate ’s dangerously addictive Mexican cacao bars and ganache truffles. Then head to Shine , a holistic brewery and bar that also specializes in herb-based, nonalcoholic “potions,” such as the black cherry- and basil-infused Three Laughing Monks. Not that you’ll need much of a health boost: After days spent soaking in hot springs, that native Coloradan shine will have rubbed off on you too.

Colorado is a soaker’s paradise with countless natural hot springs dotting the Rocky Mountain landscape . Born from rain and snow that seep deep into the earth and resurface steaming and infused with healing minerals, these natural hot tubs are sublime.

Whether you seek the hidden variety, reachable only by an arduous trek, or you prefer private springs in historic towns or swanky all-inclusive resorts, there’s a Colorado hot spring out there with your name on it. Here’s a round-up of our favorites.

When to visit Colorado

Stawberry Park Hot Springs in Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Best natural hot springs: Strawberry Park Hot Springs, Steamboat Springs

Surrounded by towering aspen and fir trees, Strawberry Park Hot Springs is a scenic locale in the Routt National Forest . Its five pools are fed by a steaming mountain spring, whose 140-degree waters are cooled by a creek that flows alongside the property. After sunset, the hot springs are adult-only and clothing-optional; there’s little light which makes for spectacular stargazing (bring a headlamp to get around!). Rustic cabins, tent sites and even a caboose are available for overnight stays. Reservations required.

How to get to Strawberry Park Hot Springs: Strawberry Park is located at the end of Country Road 36, seven miles north of Steamboat Springs . The last two miles are steep and unpaved, requiring 4WD or tire chains from November to May. Alternatively, take a door-to-door shuttle from town.

The 6 best hikes in Colorado for Rocky Mountain adventures

Best private hot springs: The Springs Resort & Spa, Pagosa Springs

A small wellness resort, The Springs has 25 man-made pools fed by the 1002-foot-deep Mother Spring, the deepest known geothermal spring in the world. The mineral-rich pools are perched on several cement terraces, varying in size and temperature, including a few with direct access to the icy waters of the San Juan River – perfect for cooling off between soaks. A full line of spa treatments also are offered. Stay overnight for extras like aqua yoga and guided hikes.

How to get to The Springs: The Springs is in the town of Pagosa Springs, in southwest Colorado. It’s located along Hwy 160, 60 miles east of Durango , which has an airport and car rental agencies.

How to road trip the Rocky Mountains on a budget

Best for couples: Valley View Hot Springs, Moffat

Little-known and way off-the-grid, the clothing-optional hot springs at Valley View are among the state’s most relaxed soaking environment. Guests follow short trails along a forested hillside to soak in steaming ‘ponds,’ often with no one else around, with views of the dramatic Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the distance. Tent sites, simple cabins and a communal kitchen make for easy overnight stays (BYO provisions). Valley View sits on 2200 acres of protected land that’s crisscrossed with trails, a working ranch and an abandoned-mine-turned-bat cave – perfect for a weekend exploring with your boo. Reservations required.

How to get to Valley View Hot Springs: Valley View is at the end of a dirt road in the San Juan Valley, about seven miles from the intersection of Highways 285 and 17, south of Salida. It’s a 3.5-hour drive from Denver.

Things you need to know to have a great time in Colorado

Best for families: Glenwood Hot Springs Resort, Glenwood Springs

Home to water slides and splash pads, ‘adventure river’ tubing and the largest hot springs pool in the world (a whopping 400-ft-long), it’s no wonder Glenwood Hot Springs is a family favorite. Add to that temperate mineral waters, poolside cabanas and an on-site restaurant, and Glenwood is a ready-made day trip with the kids or an impromptu weekend getaway. For extra indulgence, book a spa treatment or head to the smaller, hotter and quieter pool with hydrotherapy loungers and power showers.

How to get to Glenwood Hot Springs: The resort is located just off the I-70, in the historic town of Glenwood Springs, west of Vail. Arriving by car is a cinch – you’ll see the resort from the highway. Alternatively, take the train from Denver ; it takes longer but the Rocky Mountain views are epic.

Colorado on a budget

Best for luxury: Dunton Hot Springs, Dolores

Dunton Hot Springs is the epitome of western luxe and lore: a ghost town turned exclusive resort, a deluxe all-inclusive getaway in what was once the hideout of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The property, a 19th-century mining town in a secluded mountain valley, has been meticulously restored – from the original log cabins (now elegant guest quarters) to the saloon-turned-dining hall. Hot springs pepper the property, indoor and out, and plenty of other experiences await – sleigh rides, cross country skiing, fly fishing, trail rides and more. Farm-to-table meals and drinks are included.

How to get to Dunton Hot Springs: Dunton is located off of Country Road 38, southwest of Telluride. Cortez Municipal Airport is the closest airport, about 50 miles away, while the larger Durango-La Plata County Airport is 90 miles away. Car rentals can be easily booked from either airport.

Best wild hot springs: Conundrum Hot Springs, Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness

Perched at 11,200 ft, Conundrum Hot Springs is a gorgeous wild hot spring, one of the most memorable in the state. Its two wide, steaming pools overlook a wildflower-strewn mountain valley, with views of snowcapped peaks. The hike there is tough but doable: 8.5 miles each way, with a punishing 2400-foot elevation gain, passing through aspen groves and mountain meadows, and winding over creeks and past waterfalls. Many do it as a day hike (budget nine hours) but if you can score a  permit , consider camping instead. A popular locals’ spot, Conundrum can get busy in the summer; come in late spring or early fall for less of a crowd. Winter travel isn’t recommended due to avalanche danger.

How to get to Conundrum Hot Springs: The hot springs are located in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, south of Aspen . The Conundrum Creek Trailhead is seven miles from town, off Country Road 15B. Overnight parking is permitted.

Top things to do in Colorado that are simply unmissable

Best free hot springs: Piedra River Hot Springs, Pagosa Springs

A moderate 1.5-mile hike through the lush San Juan National Forest leads to a collection of steaming pools alongside the Piedra River. The pools are circles of piled-up river rocks, designed to capture a mixture of river water and scalding mineral water that bubbles up from springs along the bank. They vary in size and depth, with temperatures ranging from 100°F to 140°F, depending on the season and overflow of river water. Visitors add and move rocks, as needed, and even create private pools on the spot. Come in the summer and fall for the warmest soaks, as snowmelt often floods the pools the rest of the year.

How to get to Piedra River Hot Springs: The hot springs are located on Sheep Creek Trail, between Durango (45mi) and Pagosa Springs (30mi). Take Hwy 160 from either town to Country Road 166. A well-maintained dirt road, it leads straight to the trailhead. A 4WD vehicle is advisable in winter and spring.
