Bruce Springsteen returns to the Streets of Philadelphia; what will he play Friday?

Portrait of Maria Francis

The Boss played to the local crowd Wednesday on the first of his two-night stop in Philadelphia, opening his setlist at Citizens Bank Park with “Atlantic City.”Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band also moved “Streets of Philadelphia“ into the first-night lineup.

The Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band 2024 World Tour is set for another 7:30 p.m show at Citizens Bank Park on Friday night, Aug. 23. Gates will open at 6 p.m.

Springsteen has been on tour overseas during the summer and is now on a cross-country tour in the states. This week's performances were rescheduled from their originals dates last year.

The 74-year-old rock star and his band should hit the stage just after the 7:30 p.m. start time. There is no opening band, which means Springsteen will immediately launch into his deep set list. So, what will Springsteen do for the second night in Philly? Here’s what we know based on his last two two-night tour stops.

What songs is Bruce Springsteen playing Friday?

In London and Pittsburgh, Bruce Springsteen mixed mainstream hits with deeper cuts from his extensive catalog, changing setlists between nights. The Friday night crowd at Citizens Bank Park might hear some night-two additions like “Candy’s Room” or “Adam Raised a Cain.” Both of those songs were swapped in and out of the lineups in Pittsburgh and London.Springsteen’s notably long double encore could also hold some changes. He’s been known to shake up his encores, introducing surprises like “Born in the U.S.A.” or other classics that weren’t played on the first night.Though, he’s kept the final song consistent throughout the 2024 World Tour, sending crowds home after nearly three hours with “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in Philadelphia review: A concert with a message

Portrait of Chris Jordan

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band had a special message for Philadelphia at a packed Citizen’s Bank Park on Wednesday night.

They ain’t going anywhere.

“We ain’t  quittin’,” said Springsteen while introducing “Last Man Standing” from the band’s 2020 album “Letter to You.” “We ain’t stopping -- what the (blank) for? Why do people stop?”

Why indeed, when the E Street Band on stage in Philly on Wednesday was firing on all cylinders and fuel-injected with fun.

Springsteen, 74, had a big smile on his face for much of the show. He worked the fans near the stage during the rollicking “Working on the Highway” and gave a customer on the pit rail an item from his pocket during “Hungry Heart.”

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“We came all the way from Central Jersey, a 90-minute car ride,  just to ask one question -- can you feel the spirit?” said Springsteen during the “Spirit in the Night” introduction.

That would be an affirmative.

Fun times, but a Springsteen and E Street Band show is not a one-dimensional affair. Wednesday’s concert had a degree of solemnity. “Atlantic City,” a song not about the city’s best side, opened  the concert followed by “Lonesome Day.”

Springsteen and E Street performed the darkly hued “Streets of Philadelphia” for the first time since 2016. The Oscar-winning track from the 1993 movie “Philadelphia” about the plight of AIDS sufferers during the onset of the epidemic seemed to have a new bearing here with the help of the E Street Choir providing an uplifting dimension to the song. Max Weinberg’s subtly funky skip beat set the mood.

The summer noir classic “Racing n the Street” was brilliant thanks largely to an epic Roy Bittan piano run.

The Boss’ vocals improved considerably throughout the evening. He started out throaty and unsteady on “Atlantic City” and “Lonesome Day” but remarkably gained his footing soon after. By “Nightshift,” he was brilliant with trills and a soulful vibrato. He's brave, too, to share the vocal spotlight with the exceptional talents of E Street Choir members Curtis King and Ada Dyer on “Nightshift.”

The show’s core theme of mortality and its motivational properties the show has remained for the last 18 months. Springsteen, as in previous concerts, spoke of the passing of George Theiss, his friend and bandmate from the '60s-era Freehold band the Castiles, in a mid-show monologue prior to “Last Man Standing” and “Backstreets.” It's still very poignant and moving. Springsteen dedicated “Last Man Standing” and “I'll See You in My Dreams” to Thiess' wife, Diana Theiss, who was at the show.

But the format has opened up. They're raging into that good night with a righteous noise, a smile on their faces, and a funny aside or two. Like the Boss' take on Freehold TV options in the '60s.

“The great thing about Freehold is we sit in between Philadelphia and New York,” said Springsteen during the mid-show monologue. “Back in the day, you could get Channel 2, 3, 4, 5, Channel 6, Channel 8 -- we'd get all these Philadelphia channels. You guys used to have all those teen shows after school from the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, Lloyd Thaxton, 'American Bandstand.' Philly is a heavy music town!”

Philly fans are Springsteen's people. A swinging “Twist and Shout” was performed around the three-hour mark of the show.

“I know Philly is a tough town but are they looking a little tired to you?,” said Springsteen with a big smile to Steven Van Zandt mid-song.

“You think you can outlast the E Street Band?  Where you been the last 50 (blanking) years?”

The beat kicked back in, Springsteen swung his guitar around his neck five times fast and a woman next to me squealed with delight.

Bruce Springsteen is back: Boss joins Zach Bryan for two songs in Philadelphia

Wednesday's concert was the first of two shows Springsteen and the E Street Band play at Citizen's Bank Park. The second is Friday, Aug 23.  The shows are makeup dates for the Aug. 16 and Aug. 18, 2023 shows that were postponed due to a Springsteen illness. The Boss missed a string of shows last fall as he battled peptic ulcer disease and he thanks the crowd for their patience regarding the protracted makeup date.

Springsteen and the E Street Band last played in the city on March 16, 2023 at the Wells Fargo Center during the early U.S. arena run of the tour.

Springsteen postponed four shows in Europe this summer due to “vocal issues” that arose after a May 22 show at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, England, in what fans said was a chilly and rainy day.

Upon returning to the U.S. after the European tour, Springsteen joined Zach Bryan for two songs, “Atlantic City” and “Sandpaper,” at the country star's Aug. 7 show at the nearby Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.

When not hosting concerts, Lincoln Financial Field is the home of the Philadelphia Eagles and Citizen's Bank Park is the home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Tickets for Friday's Springsteen and E Street Band concert are available starting at $149 on www.mlb.com/phillies .

About Milow

Sammy Hagar sounded ageless as he celebrated Van Halen and more in Phoenix

Portrait of Ed Masley

Sammy Hagar had just led his bandmates in “Top of the World,” the ninth Van Halen song they’d squeezed into the top half of their set on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix, when he took a moment to address the crowd.

“You all know why we’re here,” he said as guitar hero Joe Satriani leaned into the opening riff to “Best of Both Worlds.”

“To celebrate the music of our lives.”

It was, indeed, a full-on celebration. Drummer Jason Bonham even seamlessly slipped in a chorus of Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration” on “Best of Both Worlds.”

And for much of Tuesday’s concert, Hagar kept the focus of that celebration squarely on the music of our lives that coincided with his run as the guy who took over on vocals for David Lee Roth at the helm of Van Halen, topping Billboard's album chart for four consecutive releases.

What they played: Sammy Hagar's and Loverboy's Phoenix setlists

How Sammy Hagar found himself revisiting Van Halen after 20 years

It’s been 20 years since Hagar ended his association with Van Halen after being whisked off to the Tucson airport in his sweaty stage clothes from the final concert of their ill-fated reunion tour .

It was the last time he and bassist Michael Anthony, introduced as his “partner in crime,” would share a stage with Eddie and Alex Van Halen.

A few days prior to taking the stage in Phoenix, Hagar spoke to The Arizona Republic about how he and Anthony have come to spend their summer celebrating the music they made when Van Halen was truly on top of the world.

“We just said, "It's time to do it. We're not gonna wait any longer. It's 20 years. We ain't getting no younger. Let's go do it while we still can," he said.

“My main motive was, man, I don't know how much longer I can sing these songs. These songs are difficult to sing. I painted myself into a corner years ago singing these songs.”

'Worst show of our lives': Sammy Hagar reveals 'horrible' end to his Van Halen years in Tucson, Arizona

Sammy Hagar's vocals sounded ageless on those full-throated wails

Whatever corner Hagar may have painted himself into with the high notes on the songs he sang in Phoenix, there was nothing to suggest his voice was on the verge of giving out.

He’s still got it at 76, leaning into the full-throated wails of those high notes with conviction to burn on such crowd-pleasing highlights as “Summer Nights,” “Top of the World,” “Right Now” and “Heavy Metal,” one of five songs from his solo years that made the setlist.

He also did one song by Chickenfoot, a Hagar-fronted supergroup that also featured Anthony and Satriani, and reached back to his first recording as the voice of Montrose for “Space Station #5.”

And Satriani took a solo turn on the awe-inspiring instrumental “Satch Boogie.”

But the bulk of Tuesday’s setlist was devoted to Van Halen, including three Roth-era classics, “Panama,” “Jump” (which was part of a three-song medley with those songs by Chickenfoot and Montrose) and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.”

Hagar's 'partner in crime' Michael Anthony brought his A-game on vocals

That last one featured Anthony on vocals, kicking things off with a Roth-worthy wail.

The bassist also traded lead vocals with Hagar on Van Halen’s “Judgement Day” and “Why Can’t This Be Love” in addition to dusting off the harmonies that did so much to underscore the pop hooks of their greatest hits, with keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte adding to the vocal blend.

Anthony has been a fixture of Hagar’s solo work dating back to their days in the harmony group Los Tres Gusanos, formed in 1993 when they were both still members of Van Halen, through Sammy Hagar & the Waboritas, Planet Us, Chickenfoot and Sammy Hagar and the Circle.

This is the most Van Halen songs they’ve ever done together, though, outside the context of Van Halen. And they were clearly enjoying the opportunity to take those songs out for another spin, especially the ones they hadn’t played in more than 20 years.

When it came time for Anthony to take the spotlight on “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” Hagar shouted “Mikey,” then added, “At this time in the show, for those that haven’t seen the show yet, I want to introduce my partner in crime, my beach nuts buddy, my drinkin’ pal, my Wabo rat-ass buddy, bad-ass rock ‘n’ roll bass player singin’ Michael Anthony.”

It was kinda sweet.

Joe Satriani did a great job of channeling Eddie Van Halen (and more)

Joe Satriani also has a storied history with Hagar (Planet Us, Chickenfoot) and proved to be the perfect lead guitarist for the task at hand.

He did a great job of channeling Eddie Van Halen, from his finger-tapping pyrotechnics to his whammy-bar technique, honoring the essence of the licks and solos fans have come to know and love while also stretching out in moments that were more distinctly Satriani-esque.

He even busted out a power drill for the intro to “Poundcake” in tribute to Eddie.

The phrase guitar hero is obviously overused, but Satriani more than lives up to the title. He’s a total badass on guitar, as he reminded us repeatedly without necessarily making it all about him.

Hagar also played guitar.

When it came time for “There’s Only One Way to Rock,” the only Hagar solo song they played in their first hour on stage, he told the crowd, “Now, I’m gonna go ahead and make a full of myself and play guitar with Joe Satriani in the band,” adding “I do this to make Joe look really good.”

It was a funny, self-effacing moment, of which there were several. But Hagar’s guitar work on “There’s Only One Way to Rock” was actually fantastic. He just comes from a different school of lead guitar than the one Satriani attended. Hagar tore it up, though, inadvertently suggesting that he may need to revisit the theory that there’s only one way to rock because, in terms of rocking that guitar, there’s clearly Satriani’s way and Hagar's way.

Jason Bonham definitely rose to the occasion on drums. Much like his father, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, he's a heavy hitter who can also groove.

And having Thistlethwayte on hand was nice, especially when it came time for the keyboard-driven majesty of “Jump.”

It wouldn't be a Sammy Hagar, of course, without his sense of showmanship. He knows exactly how to make a concert feel more like a party, and Tuesday night was no exception. He commanded the stage with his usual flair and even handed out red Solo cups full of tequila to the fans down front.

Loverboy rocked the hits, from 'Turn Me Loose' to 'Hot Girls in Love'

Loverboy opened the show with a crowd-pleasing journey through their biggest hits, from “Lovin’ Every Minute of It” and “The Kid is Hot Tonite” to the triple-shot of singalongs that brought their portion of the concert to a rousing finish – “Hot Girls in Love,” “Turn Me Loose” and “Workin’ For the Weekend.”

Mike Reno has the weirdest mic technique you’ve ever seen. The microphone is just as likely to be pointed at the signature bandana on his forehead as it is in the direction of his mouth, which led to several overheard discussions when their set was over as to whether he was lip-syncing.

The thing is, there are videos online of Loverboy performing in the ‘80s where he does the same thing. It’s just the way he works with a microphone.

He sounded great, as did his bandmates, especially lead guitarist Paul Dean, who had his tone dialed in just right to those solos really sing, and bassist Kenneth "Spider" Sinnaeve, who took a cool solo on “Hot Girls in Love.”

Ed has covered pop music for The Republic since 2007, reviewing festivals and concerts, interviewing legends, covering the local scene and more. He did the same in Pittsburgh for more than a decade. Milow is a singer/songwriter hailing from Borgerhout, Belgium who was born on July 14th, 1981. Since his debut in 2004 he has released five hugely acclaimed studio albums almost completely independently, acting as his own publisher, record label and manager to achieve genuine world-wide success.

Inspired by watching the mighty Pink Floyd perform one of their final live shows at the Rock Werchter festival when he was 12 years old, Jonathan Vandenbroeck began writing his own music on the piano and the guitar when he was 15, with a dream in his heart to one day come back and play the Rock Werchter festival in his own right. After playing in a few bands around high school and in university, he decided to go solo in 2003, taking the stage name Milow to go with it. After playing as many small shows as he could around his native Belgium, he made his first big impression at Humo’s Rock Rally, a talent competition that previously gave the world dEUS. While he didn’t win, he made enough of an impression to self-release his first album “The Bigger Picture” in January 2006, and after Milow’s single “You Don’t Know” became a top three hit on the singles chart, it would eventually became a Gold certified smash hit in his home country.

After his second album “Coming Of Age” was released in 2008 and proved to be another huge success in his home country, a cover of 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake’s “Ayo Technology” that he performed for a Belgian radio station became a surprise hit all over the world. It hit the number one spot on the Belgian, Dutch, Swedish, Swiss and Danish singles charts and had hit the top ten everywhere from Spain to Finland. “Coming Of Age” was re-released all over Europe, going on to sell over half a million copies all over the world, and ever since then, Milow has remained one of the most thrillingly unique and defiantly succesful songwriters of his generation. With the stamp of approval of everyone from Jason Mraz to Kanye West, Milow is a true artist, one that comes highly recommended.

Live-Bewertungen

What can I say? Milow live at the AB Cafe in Brussels was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I am so glad to have partaken in.

Opening up with Ayo Technology, the show erupted into a charismatic powerhouse. The crowd immediately was clapping along in unison as fans screamed, it was truly a sight to behold. The strumming of the acoustic guitars along with Milow's harmonic voice were so clean and uplifting.

The set was a little bit dark and shadowy, but the happy upbeat music contrasted well. The dark blue lights coming from behind the band were pierced by some brighter spotlights and it gave a very cool and peaceful energy to the whole venue. The size of the venue was great, it was pretty small so everybody was mostly up close to the stage so everybody could see the familiar faces of Milow and his great band of musicians as they serenaded the whole crowd into bliss.

Tom Vanstiphout really took the spotlight on the guitar solos. He put so much energy and emotion into them and was flawless in his execution of every note. Overall, this was an amazing experience with such a talented band of fantastic musicians.

Jonathan Vandenbroeck better known by his stage name Milow is perhaps Belgium's best known DIY musician and has gained a huge reputation across Europe for his unique style. He has gained a good amount of chart success across the continent with both his albums and singles yet it is his live show that really is the most revered.

The audience is packed into every space all craning to see the one man spectacle take to the stage. The lights dim and Milow steps out to rapturous applause accompanied by a number of well trained musicians. They carefully dissect his discography at slick speeds whilst the audience watch on in stunned awe only breaking to cheer and applaud at the finale of each song. 'Little in the Middle' and 'We Must Be Crazy' are major highlights tonight as Jonathan demonstrates the way in which he can translate live ability onto a recording and vice versa. An artist with an unarguable amount of talent and a really great, warm fanbase.
