But planning such an extraordinary — and expensive — vacation can be daunting, and every question seems to turn into a dozen more.

What are the best ways to book a Disney cruise to save money and get extra perks? When can you book shore excursions? What stateroom is the best for your family?

We get it, and we’ve been there. In this post, we’re going to detail the best ways to book a Disney cruise — some offer simplicity, while others include extra perks. Plus, we’ll show you how to earn points and miles on your cruise and how to use them to pay for your cruise. Finally, we’ll go over important predeparture details to remember once you’re booked.

Let’s set sail and explore Disney Cruise Line bookings!

Before booking your Disney Cruise Line cruise, gather the following important information to ensure a smooth booking process:

• The itinerary you want to book
• The number of people, including ages at the time of embarkation, in each stateroom
• The names, addresses, phone numbers, and birthdates of each guest on the reservation
• Payment information (a credit card, Disney gift card, or Disney Rewards Redemption Card)
• Castaway Club member ID, if you have one

Book Direct With Disney Cruise Line

The Disney Cruise Line website is often the simplest way to book your cruise. It’s a one-stop shop that lets you quickly and easily book the best cruise for you.

You can filter the options by travel dates, destinations, departure port, and cruise length. This booking method is especially easy if you already know where you want to go or what ship you’d like to sail on.

If you’re not sure what room to book, Disney Cruise Line offers detailed looks at each ship’s stateroom options in the Our Ships tab online.

If you’re still not sure, just ask. According to Disney Cruise expert and planDisney panelist Tracie M., you shouldn’t hesitate to call Disney Cruise Line if you need guidance. She knows from personal experience what a great resource that can be.

“During my first voyage on the Disney Fantasy, the agent told me about a few staterooms on board that had extra-large windows. I never would have discovered this cabin on my own,” she told us.

You can reach Disney Cruises at 800-951-3532 or 888-325-2500 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.

When you book your cruise directly through Disney, you can hold your reservation for up to 3 days without a deposit. Then you can confirm your reservation with a payment of (usually) just 20% of your cruise cost. The length of the cruise determines the date that your final payment is due — sailings up to 5 nights long require a final payment 90 days before the sail date, while cruises 6 nights or longer need to be paid in full 120 days before sailing.

Cancellation policies vary based on the specific itinerary.

Book Through a Travel Agent

Many people prefer to book Disney cruises through traditional travel agents. Finding an agent who specializes in Disney cruises is a great way to get personalized guidance when planning your vacation.

Even seasoned travelers love using travel agents to book Disney vacations since there can be many moving parts to keep track of. While booking a Disney cruise is more straightforward than booking a trip to a Disney park, many people still love using a travel agent to make things easy.

Online Travel Agencies

There are so many websites for booking cruises that it can be confusing to know which offers the best deals. We have found that most online travel agencies offer the same basic prices on cruises. The difference comes in the extras, like shipboard credit or bonus miles , that come with a booking. Here’s a quick look at some of the best places to book Disney cruises.

Costco Travel

Booking a Disney cruise through Costco Travel is great for Costco members. That’s because cruise bookings through Costco often come with a digital Costco Shop card as a bonus. The cruise price dictates the amount of the Shop card. For example, we found a 7-night Caribbean cruise on Disney Treasure (set to debut in December 2024) for 3 people in an oceanview stateroom with a verandah that cost $7,411.94 and came with a $590 Shop card.

Bookings made through Costco Travel can be confirmed with a deposit or can be paid in full at the time of booking. Cancellation policies vary by cruise itinerary.

Cruise.com is one of the only online travel agents that allows you to book Disney cruises online. Most other websites require you to book over the phone. We did multiple searches for different itineraries and found Disney cruises booked through Cruise.com were about $200 cheaper than booking directly through Disney Cruise Line. While this won’t always be the case, Cruise.com could be good for those looking to save money on a Disney cruise.

Bookings made through Cruise.com must be paid for in full at the time of booking. Cancellation policies vary by itinerary.

CruiseDirect

CruiseDirect also allows online bookings for Disney cruises. We found the prices to be identical to those found directly through Disney. However, there were often small extras included, like a $100 Visa gift card and a Walt Disney World official autograph book . These bonuses vary by itinerary and sometimes require a bit of work to receive (for example, you need to fill out a request form after your cruise to get the Visa gift card).

Be sure to read the details of these bonuses carefully. You can see a bonus offering 10% off shore excursions in this example, but that discount only applies to shore excursions booked through CruiseDirect, not ones booked through Disney Cruise Line.

Bookings through CruiseDirect can be confirmed with a deposit, and cancellation policies vary by itinerary.

Airline and Hotel Cruise Booking Sites

If you want to earn a big chunk of airline miles or hotel points with your cruise booking , you may want to look to an airline or hotel cruise booking site.

The good news is that you have the opportunity to earn lots of miles by booking a cruise this way. The bad news is that each of these websites charges a $24.99 booking fee on each reservation, and you need to call to make a reservation. While we usually don’t recommend sites that charge a booking fee, sometimes the miles you earn outweigh the booking fee.

• American Airlines Cruises : AAdvantage members earn 1x American Airlines miles (plus 1x Loyalty Points ), and AAdvantage credit cardholders earn an additional 1x miles on every cruise booked, with occasional additional bonuses offered. Call AA Cruises at 800-259-5642 to book.
• Delta Cruises : SkyMiles members earn 2x miles on cruises booked through Delta, plus bonus miles on select itineraries. Call Delta Cruises at 800-820-3244 to book.
• United Cruises: MileagePlus members can earn 3x miles on interior and oceanview staterooms or 4x miles on balcony staterooms and suites. United credit cardholders can earn up to 7x miles! Call United Cruises at 800-211-2039 to book.
• Marriott Cruise With Points : Earn 3x Marriott Bonvoy points (including taxes, fees, and other charges) on a cruise.

Book Through an Onboard-Only Offer

If you’ve ever cruised before, you know that there’s always an incentive to put a deposit down on your next cruise before you disembark. It can’t hurt to do this because if you end up taking the cruise, you get a discount. If not, the deposit is refundable.

If you’ve never been on a Disney cruise but have friends who will be on one and are planning to put a deposit down on their next cruise, they can secure a second room using the onboard-only offer . Then they can transfer that second reservation to you, and you get the onboard booking benefit (both parties must travel on the same sailing.)

I took advantage of this trick for an upcoming Disney cruise, and it saved me 10% (which was about $700 for a 7-night cruise!) Our friends put a deposit down on a second room while they were on their last Disney cruise, and then they transferred that second reservation to us. We ended up with a Disney Cruise Line booking with a 10% discount .

Onboard-only offers generally just require a $250 deposit, which is fully refundable until you choose a date for your cruise (then the cancellation policy for your specific cruise applies), so there’s not much downside.

If you want to save money, you may be wondering if you can book a Disney Cruise with points. The answer is yes, but your options are limited. Plus, unlike using points to book hotels and flights, there’s no opportunity to get outsized value when using points for a cruise.

Capital One Miles (Best Way To Book a Disney Cruise)

One of the easiest and best ways to book a Disney cruise with points is by using Capital One miles . Simply book your cruise (through any method) using a card such as the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , or Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card . Then use the miles in your account to redeem against your cruise purchase (within 90 days) at a rate of 1 cent per mile.

Capital One miles are easy to earn (many cards earn 2x miles on all purchases), so they are great for a wide variety of travelers.

Since this method doesn’t require booking through Capital One Travel , you can take advantage of any available sale or promotion, whether it’s directly through Disney or a traditional or online travel agency.

Disney cruises can’t be booked through AmexTravel.com , Chase Travel , or Citi Travel .

Alternative Ways To Book

There are additional ways to book Disney cruises with points and miles, although these don’t offer tremendous value. If you’re flush with points and really just want to go on a Disney cruise, then by all means, go for it. However, if your goal is to use your points and miles for the highest cents-per-point value, you may want to skip these.

You could book a Disney cruise with points through Marriott Cruises . This site allows you to redeem Marriott Bonvoy points for a discount on your cruise. While that’s great news, the not-so-great part is that you’d only get 0.4 cents per point , significantly less than the 0.7 cents we value Marriott Bonvoy points at.

Another option is to use United MileagePlus Miles via United Cruises . You’d only get about 0.7 cents per mile in value instead of the 1.2 or so cents per mile you could get using them for flights. While the value isn’t great, if you’d rather go on a cruise than fly somewhere, it could be worth considering.

Other good options would be cash-back credit cards . These cards earn cash-back rewards on all purchases, which can be used toward a Disney cruise, a trip to a Disney park, Disney gifts, or anything else. Multiple cards earn 2% cash-back or even 5% cash-back on everyday purchases, which could end up being more lucrative than using the Disney Premier card.

The Disney Premier card could be good for those who would rather save money for Disney trips than other types of travel, or it could make sense for those who want special financing arrangements. However, there are lots of alternatives that earn flexible points or cash-back that may offer a better return on everyday purchases.

If you’d like to earn lots of points by booking a Disney cruise (and who wouldn’t want that?), there are plenty of options.

Of course, you could pay with the Disney Premier card to earn 2% back in Disney Dollars. Alternatively, you could use a card that rewards travel purchases. These cards all earn 3x points on all travel, including cruises:

Check In for Your Cruise

Complete your paperwork and check in for your cruise to get your boarding time. Check-in for first-time cruisers opens 30 days before setting sail. Luggage Tags and Packing

Be sure to look out for your Disney Cruise Line luggage tags, which will be mailed to you about 60 days before your sailing. If you don’t receive them or forget them, the porters at the dock will have plenty of extras.

When packing for your cruise, don’t forget to include fun extras like costumes for onboard celebrations (like Pirate Night). Leave your rubber ducks at home, however. Disney Cruise Line recently banned the tradition of hiding them around the ships.

The 3 Best Travel Agents for Every Type of Disney Vacations

I have booked a lot of vacations, from international destinations like the Maldives and Ethiopia to all-inclusive resorts, and by far the hardest vacation to plan for is a Disney Vacation . Even though I have visited Disney World over 75 times in the past 25 years, it is still a challenge because there is so much to plan for, and don’t even get me started on booking a Disney Cruise. That is a whole different ball game! All that being said, I firmly believe in using a travel agent for Disney vacations .

There is soooo much to figure out when planning a Disney Vacation :

• What hotel to stay at?
• What transportation to take to each park?
• Which rides to get lightning lane passes for?
• What parks have early entry?
• What hotels give you early entry?
• When to book dining reservations?
• How to use genie +
• What time to get a virtual queue for the Tron & Guardians of the Galaxy Ride
• the list is ENDLESS!

About 10, maybe 11 years ago, I saw an ad somewhere for a Disney Travel Agent Service and decided to give it a shot. I mean, what could it hurt?

1. Best Day Ever Vacations – My Favorite Disney Travel Agency!

Best Day Ever Vacations specializes in Disney Vacations! Agents who join the team not only receive the normal Disney College of Knowledge training, they have a one to one coach which teaches them everything about Disney until they are fully trained. on a Disney Vacation as I was. They generally were interested in my family and how they could make the trip the best possible vacation for my family. Instead of trying to upsell me on things, they talked to me about how to make the most out of my vacation with the kiddos.

The Travel Agent wanted to know what characters my kids liked and how my family liked to travel. They gave me tips on how to beat the heat with the little ones and how to get awesome castle pics.

They will gave you so many tips on how to navigate the park and save money and this is BEFORE you even BOOK a vacation . I hadn’t put down one penny of a deposit… and that is not even the best part (we will get to that soon).

Trip Planning to Its Fullest – Dining Guides, Packing Lists, Trip Planners, and More

Now, this isn’t the best part (I promise we will get there soon).

When you booked you will got a personalized guide (the Disney World one was 58-pages!) it has your entire trip laid out. It included dining recommendations, room reservation #, how to do My Disney Experience and Genie + all laid out for you.

They send out reminders when it is time for booking dining reservations, send you full dining guides, and will even help you secure some if needed.

Now for the Best Part – They will find you the best deal, even months AFTER you booked your vacation!

One of my biggest fears is booking too early and missing out on a deal. At Best Day Ever they are constantly searching for the best deal. So let’s say you back something now and in 6 months a sale pops up, their agents are taught to look out for sales to find you the best possible deal.

2. Wishful Thinking – Best for International Disney Vacations Including Tokyo Disney, Shanghai Disney & Hong Kong Disney

If you are looking for an international trip then this is the spot to go. Booking a trip to Tokyo is easy. Booking a trip to Tokyo Disney is hard. It is because the parks are set up for Japanese tourists so everything is in Japanese when trying to book.

When we went to Tokyo Disney, we definitely needed help navigating the options. Nothing is the same as booking in the US Parks and the website was very confusing.

I was so thankful to find Wishful Thinking . They made our lives much easier. They helped plan everything from our hotel rooms, to our tickets to our rail passes back to Tokyo. With their help, our trip to Tokyo Disneyland was a breeze.

3. Magic Lamp Vacations – Best Agency to Book an Adventures by Disney International Trip

Magic Lamp is another solid choice for booking destinations. We used their services to book our Adventures by Disney trip to New York. We got to see Frozen, Good Morning America, and the trip was a blast! They are amazing at what they do. What you should look for in a Disney Travel Agent?

Before we jump ahead, I do want to share what you should look for in a Disney travel agent, just in case you go with someone different.

Just like how not all Disney Rides are the same, not all Disney travel agents are created the same. Some will book your trip and you never hear from them again, and others are an absolute dream to work with.

Here are some things to look for in your Disney Travel agent:

• FREE Services – Disney Travel Agents should not charge for the service of booking your reservation (they receive a % from Disney for booking your vacation). We have had several companies offer “premium services” and really what we got was a 3-page dining guide that cost us $250.
• Itinerary Planning – I don’t need someone to tell me exactly what to do each day, but it is nice to have a guide to each of the parks and resorts.
• Be True Disney Experts – Anyone can google the best Disney World Hotels, but you want to work with people who know all the little details, like the Beach Club has the best pool in all of Disney World or that you can enjoy night vision of the animals at Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House.
• Provide Reminders – There are a lot of things to plan for on a Disney trip, when to book dining, when to check in for your cruise. All those reminders should be provided by your travel agent.
• Packing Lists & Guides – Your Disney Travel Agent should also have extras for you like, packing lists, dining guides, park tips and more.
• Have Fun Complimentary Extras – Best Day Ever Vacations, offers a ton of complimentary services from a complete planning guide, to money and time saving tips for in the parks and they often have fun gifts for us upon arrival.

This DIY approach might not be the best way to find your dream vacation at sea.

• Do you have firsthand knowledge about the cruise destination? The itinerary?

You will also want to ask the travel agent if they have a preferred relationship or negotiated agreement with any specific lines that could lead to special perks for you.

Be aware that not all agents work with all cruise lines; some represent only a few preferred suppliers or specialize in higher-end cruises. They get bigger commissions from their preferred lines.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, but be aware if the agent seems to be putting you off the line you were originally considering, as this could be the reason. Working with Travel Agents Specializing in Disney Vacations

The amount of research necessary to plan all the details of a Disney vacation can be too time-consuming or even intimidating for some people. If you are feeling overwhelmed by all the options, a great (FREE) solution is to use the services of a travel agent who specializes in Disney travel .

“Disney Specialists” have completed the College of Disney Knowledge, an online course offered by Disney that covers Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line and Adventures by Disney. This is a great starting point, but frankly it’s not enough. Believe it or not, a travel agent can easily become a “Disney Specialist” in a few hours, without ever having visited a Disney vacation destination in person!

For that reason, we recommend picking an agency such as Small World Vacations that focuses on Disney travel and requires its agents to have advanced experience with Disney destinations, including in-person, on-site visits.

How Come It’s Free?

What to expect, avoid problems with payments, our personal recommendation.

Normally the client pays nothing extra for the service provided by a travel agency. Travel agents make their living from a small commission paid by the travel supplier (in this case, Disney) for the resort hotel rooms, theme park passes and vacation packages they book. The agent is compensated by this commission for the time, effort and attention she provides to the client.

Some agencies do charge for making changes or cancellations. The agency we recommend, Small World Vacations , does not charge any fees, including cancellation or change fees.

Travel agencies always charge a fee for making air reservations, because the airlines no longer pay commission. Small World Vacations does not book plane tickets for that very reason: it’s cheaper and easier for you to do it yourself! ( Read our advice and tips on booking your own airfare .)

Because they work on a commission basis, it’s unfair to ask a travel agent to do a lot of research for you, and then book elsewhere. Likewise, a reputable travel agent normally will not take over the booking of a trip from another travel agent, because this is considered “stealing” someone else’s earned commission.

An agent who specializes in Disney travel should be able to provide you with accurate information, including pricing, for Disney resorts, theme park passes and packages. She will book your trip and seek out the best deals for you — even rebooking your trip when better rates come up, if possible. Additionally, the best agents will help you with “extras” like booking your Advance Dining Reservations .

Once you book with a travel agent, he or she becomes your single point of contact for all changes in your travel plans. You cannot make changes or cancellations directly through Disney if you are working with a travel agent. For most people this feature is convenient, but if you prefer to control everything yourself, booking with a travel agent is not for you.

Travel agents are generally geared toward long-term planning (one month in advance or more). That’s primarily because it can take 3-4 weeks for them to get the paperwork from Disney once they’ve made your reservations, and then they have to get that paperwork to you. If you’re planning a last-minute trip, it’s usually better to do it yourself.

One of the most important things you need to find out about a travel agency is how they handle payments. The agency should send your payments immediately and directly to Disney. If you give them a credit card number, the card payment should be processed by Disney. If you write a check, it should be made out to Disney, not to the agency. That is how the agency we recommend ( Small World Vacations ) processes payments. They don’t hold your money — it goes straight to Disney.

DO NOT use an agency that collects your money and holds that money in its own accounts! Agencies that hold your money may have cash flow problems. They may be using your money to pay their suppliers for earlier clients’ vacations, and then hoping to use future clients’ money to pay for your vacation. It’s sort of like a pyramid scheme, and it can have the same result if their cash flow dries up.

When you let an agency process your payment through its own accounts, you have no guarantee that they’ll actually pay Disney for your vacation. There is also a risk that they’ll delay paying so long that your reservation may be canceled. If you have booked a Disney cruise, full payment must be received by Disney by a certain date so that you can reserve excursions and make Palo reservations, but if the agency sits on your money, you may lose your chance to make those reservations.

Some agencies are bonded, but if they default or close their doors, the bond may not cover all the money they’ve been collecting from clients. In some states, agencies that process payments are legally required to put your money in an escrow account for your protection, but many states don’t require this. In any case, there is no reason why the agency should earn interest on your money!

By the way, we don’t recommend paying for a vacation by check or debit card. You have much better protection against losing your money if you pay with a credit card.

Using a Disney Cruise Travel Agent, Is it Worth it?

Let’s chat about something magical – Disney Cruises…. and let’s talk about something less magical, having to plan a Disney Cruise. I’ve been on my fair share of trips, but you know what’s the hardest to plan? A Disney Vacation! I’ve taken my kiddos to Disney World & Disney Cruises more times than I can count in the last 12 years, and believe me, it’s like trying to plan a wedding, there is so much to do. And I have done it so many times without the help of a Travel Agent.

Picture this: You are trying to figure out which cruise you want,

• Which ship to choose from,
• What itinerary to choose
• Which type of room to choose
• Which deck to have that room? (is it better to be on a high deck or low deck,
• Is it better to stay on the front or the aft
• Figuring out the transportation to the port
• Knowing all the documents you need to bring with you onboard
• What are the check in times
• Booking the dining times and upgraded dining
• Scheduling bibbidi bobbidi boutique
• Figuring out which excursions are the best
• and of course what to wear for pirate night,
• Where do you find the princesses onboard
• How to register your kids for the kids club
• What is on the private island, do I need a cabana

It’s literally endless, honestly it’s a part time job! Oh yeah, I have to raise a family too.

A couple of years back, I eventually delegated this responsibility to a Disney Travel Agent, as I had a lot on my hands. (Plus, I had no idea their services came at no cost, so I might have done it much sooner had I been informed.)

My First Disney Travel Agent Experience

My first Disney Travel Agency experience was pretty good. It was one of those big Disney Travel Agencies that boasts it books the most Disney Vacations and makes magical memories, yada yada yada.

They got me my stateroom and found a good itinerary, so it was definitely worth outsourcing to a Disney Travel Agent because I didn’t have to do any of that stuff. The one thing I didn’t love was they tried to upsell me on everything, which I know is sales but it wasn’t that fun.

Still, I was most likely going to use this same company again…. until my friend told me I needed to use her travel agent.

Now, I am not one to usually jump to whatever my friend tells me, and I didn’t really understand how a travel agent could be any different, but my friend insisted I had to try her Disney Cruise Travel Agent.

Seriously, this was the Best Experience Ever

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting too much different when I reached out to the next travel agent, but after a few minutes (maybe even seconds) I knew immediately this was different.

Right off the bat it was a great experience, It was like talking to your best friend. They are so excited to help you plan your vacation, you can feel it. By the way, the name of the company is Best Day Ever Vacations (I probably should mention that)

Rather than just sending over a quote, they wanted to know about my family, what characters my kids are into, what kind of shore excursions would the kids like, and then worked it all within my budget.

We ended up sailing on the Disney Dream because my kids love Marvel and it was during the Marvel Days at Sea and it had a stop at Castaway Cay. It was an amazing ship!

How Did They Help Me Plan My Trip?

In addition to booking the room and tickets, the agency gave our family

• a complete 50+ page guide for our trip
• Notified us along the way of when it was time to book shore excursions
• Gave us a guide and tips on how to setup the Disney Navigator App
• Tips on how to avoid the crowds on the pool deck, what to pack on day 1 of the cruise and more
• They even connected me with a transportation service that was the same price as the Disney Bus but it was premium Black Car Service. My kids thought they were famous
• But that’s not even the best part. ….

T hey Found me a Better Deal, Even after I was already Booked!

So I booked the trip about a year in advance. I put down, I think it was a 10% deposit and hadn’t really thought about a trip when out of the blue I got a text from my Disney Planner Kayla saying a new offer just came out for Disney + subscribers and they got me a better deal. They saved me an extra $1100 on my vacation that I ALREADY BOOKED

It was the best text I have ever received. Since then I have booked every Disney Vacation with Best Day Ever Vacations , I’ve done two Disney Cruises, and am now going on my 4th Disney World trip booked with them this holiday season.
