Cat Ba Island is the best thing about Halong Bay. This is why.

Beautiful view of Halong Bay

Without a doubt, one of the most popular things to do in Vietnam is to take a Halong Bay cruise. And for good reason; the region is stunning.

The views are incredible. You feel like you’re in the middle of a misty magical land away from it all. When you share your photos, everyone is jealous. It’s one of those special places you will never forget.

Taking a cruise seems to be the most popular way to explore the area. You just need to show up and everything is taken care of for you. No need to plan anything!

After my Halong Bay cruise I stayed at Cat Ba Island and realized it was better suited for me. I like to do things independently and it’s possible to explore Halong Bay using Cat Ba as a base.

About Cat Ba Island

It is the largest island in Halong Bay and there’s enough to keep you busy for days. If sustainable tourism is a concern, nearly half of Cat Ba is a national park. Both its land and the ecosystem in the water is a protected area.

Here you’ll find the same small fishing villages tucked in the jagged limestone edges of the island and sandy beaches to welcome newcomers.

That said, arriving in Cat Ba can be a bit overwhelming at first. It is the hub for the area, with lots of cheap hotels and tourist agencies selling boat trips and other tours. The city can be crowded with tourists who are on limited time to take one of the tours and move on. Don’t let this put you off.

It’s easy to lose the crowds and explore more of the island and its waters. You can kayak the area and see Halong Bay from a completely different perspective, navigating its crevices. Swimming and snorkelling is incredible here. There’s also great hiking, and amazing seafood.

My favourite things to do on Cat Ba Island

1. Hike in the National Park

Two hikers in a jungle.

Jungle hikes. Photo by Stephane Bidouze.

Half of Cat Ba Island was designated a park in 1986, and in 2004 it became a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. This ensures the flora, fauna and local wildlife will be protected, including an endangered monkey called the Cat Ba Langur.

Don’t expect to see one on your hikes though. They are much like the elusive wild sloths in Costa Rica; almost impossible to spot. There are only 60 remaining on the island.

Monkey spotting aside, there are great hikes for every fitness level, with well-marked paths so that travellers can explore independently. If you’re feeling adventurous and have head torches check out Trung Trang Cave, which has impressive stalactites.

Looking for a big adventure? Trek through the park to Viet Hai fishing village, which has recently developed an eco tourism project. It’s a great way to support locals, the environmental efforts and help maintain traditional customs.

2. Snap the best view of Halong Bay

Kayaking around the bay. Photo by Nicola Marshall.

If you’re looking for that Instagram-perfect photo of Halong Bay, it is not on a boat. Instead head straight up the lush island hillside to the Cannon Fort.

It’s only a 30 minute walk from town but can take longer as you’ll want to stop to see the tunnels, cannons and gun emplacements from the various wars.

At the top you’ll get a spectacular view overlooking the bay. If you go later in the day when the fishermen return you’ll also see the fishing boats in Halong Bay dotting the waters.

At the top there’s a cafe and small museum. Nothing out of the ordinary, but much welcomed if you need a cool drink.

3. Spend the day on a deserted beach

There are a few beaches on Cat Ba Island and which one you go to depends on how you want to spend your day. Tourist agencies sell day trips to busiest beaches, called Cat Bat Beach 1, 2 and 3.

But if you came on vacation to escape it all, you can find that too. There are plenty of great beaches with few people on them just a short drive, kayak or hike away.

4. Visit the market

Take a short walk outside the town core to reach the local food market. This isn’t a tourist-trap souvenir market but where locals on the island go to get their ingredients daily.

5. Explore the Hospital Cave

You cannot visit the country without learning about the Vietnam American War. If you’ve grown up only hearing about it through American media it is fascinating to see the other side.

The Hospital Cave is literally a hospital inside a cave that was in use until 1975. It’s best to hire a guide in advance to take you, as there isn’t much information on site with only mannequins throughout to give perspective.

6. Eat seafood, fresh off the boat

If you want to eat pizza or pasta head to Nui Ngoc Street, where everything is in English and international food reigns. But who goes to Vietnam to eat pizza?

A street food stand at night

Head off the main drag for a local dining experience. Photo by Nicola Marshall.

Cat Ba is an island of fishermen. They are known for shrimp, clams, octopus and a variety of fish. If you get off the main strip, there are tons of great local spots where you’ll eat fresh Vietnamese seafood dishes for a fraction of the price. The closer you get to the fishing ports, the better the food will be.

72 HOURS IN CAT BA ISLAND : THE PERFECT CAT BA ITINERARY

Cat Ba itinerary

I wrote this Cat Ba itinerary from 1 to 3 days exploring the Cat Ba island. It’s one of the rising destination and an alternative for overrated Halong Bay, more and more people choose Cat Ba island instead

Looking for a less touristy island, less developed but beautiful with greenery, then Cat Ba island will be the top choice. Cat Ba has everything that an island has to offer : Enjoy nature and some hiking to see magnificent views at Cat Ba National Park , see local villages with hidden alleyways to learn more about local lives unfold, cruise on a wooden junk boat to explore Lan Ha Bay with numerous towering limestone cliffs with fun activities : kayaking, swimming on private beaches, hiking the Canon Fort to see the panoramic view of the town of Cat Ba.

Planning from  1, 2 or 3 days Cat Ba is the great choice, allow you having enough time to buy tickets and  is the right choice, allowing you enough time to visit must-see tourist attractions in Cat Ba island. Let this Cat Ba  itinerary guide you for top things to do in Cat Ba island  for 1 to 3 days.

Table of Contents

What to do in Cat Ba island : Cat Ba itinerary 3 days

This Cat Ba 3-day itinerary is a great choice for travellers who have time, travel in a slow pace and want to explore Cat Ba island in-depth.

I recommend staying in the Cat Ba town area since there is a tons of bars, restaurants, cafes, and convenience stores so you can do things easily.

Day 1 in Cat Ba : Bus from Hanoi. Canon fort and Cat Co 2 beach

Cat Ba island view

I recommend taking a morning bus starts at 7.30am from Hanoi, you will be arriving in Cat Ba town around 11am. This is an option for those who travel on a budget, the price starts from 15 USD. If you would love to take a private car, the price is approx 130 USD

You may contact the hotel if they can offer early check-in because check-in time is usually at 2pm. If not, leave your belongings at the reception and walk around the hotel, have lunch, and return to the hotel by 2pm.

Take a rest for 1 hour. Then head to Cat Co beach 2 for swimming, you can walk, take a taxi or golf-cart ride. Spend 1 hour at the beach then head to Canon Fort, hike up and enjoy the sunset at the summit.

For evening activities, walk along street 1/4 where you can see locals hang out or join in a Cat Ba food tour to try our best local food in Cat Ba.

Day 2 : Lan Ha bay boat tour : Van Boi beach and Three Peach beach.

Ba Trai Dao Beach

Three Peach Beach

The boat tour starts at around 8.30am at Beo pier and take you to a kayaking spot, pick up the kayak and paddle on your own to explore the untouched beach, you can walk around, swim and sit back and relax. Then keep paddling to see towering limestone cliffs whist kayaking, the view itself is absolutely amazing. There is a few cave which you can paddle through and see hidden lagoons.

After 1-2 hours of kayaking, we return the boat for another 1-hour boat cruise amongst beautiful limestone rock formations, islands and islets to reach the Three Peach beaches area.

Jump off the boat and soak up in the clean, emerald water with wooden junk boats around you. In my opinion, this is one of the best spots for swimming. There is a tons of little white sand beaches around so you can paddle to find your beach.

Having a seafood lunch onboard. What I like about the food is that It’s fresh. The captain bought them from the Central Seafood Market in Cat Ba island and cooked them onboard, so the food quality was great.

After lunch, you can kayak around, and explore hidden valleys and caves. Actually, you can spend the entire days here.

Another option is to take a Lan Ha bay tour including kayaking, swimming and biking in Viet Hai village .

Suggested tour : Lan Ha Bay boat your with a visit to Viet Hai village

3pm getting back the boat and cruise back Cat Ba town, on the way back, we cruise pass Monkey island and Cai Beo fishing village where you can see local lives, fish farms, floating restaurants and more. Back to the pier at 4pm to conclude the Lan Ha Bay boat tour from Cat Ba island

Day 3 : Cat Ba National Park half day trekking. Bus back to Hanoi.

Trekking Cat Ba national park

Leave your hotel in Cat Ba town in the morning, take 20 minutes bus ride to the headquarter of Cat Ba national park

From the entrance gate, walk to the Specimen house an use the toilet and hit the road. Walk along small paved road, you can local houses along the way, keep going to the end of the road where the trail is.

There is a restaurant along the way so you can food and drink

Climb the rough stone steps all the way up, the trail is clear so you won’t get lost.

There is a T-juction, if you go left, there will be Ngu Lam peak, if you go right, it will be the look out tower.

The view on the summit is amazing with lush green forest. It is worth your effort and hardships when hiking up.

There are steep stone staircase to reach the higher viewpoint, the view is more amazing the the previous one. Check it out.

The way to walk down, you even have to be more careful, use the handrails, trees to support you to go down.

Get a drink at a restaurant, rest and back to the national park’s headquarters.

After that, head back to your hotel in Cat Ba town, take a shower, rest, lunch and take the bus back to Hanoi. There is a bus that leaves at 12.30pm from Cat Ba town. If you want to return the hotel, then leave at 7.30am and finish the tour around 11am to 11.30am so you have time to take a shower and have quick lunch.

If you also want to see Trung Trang cave, take a bus leaving at 3.30pm from Cat Ba.

You can also hire a private car from Cat Ba, put your belongings there, so you don’t need to head back Cat Ba town and ask for a pick-up at around the national park area. Don’t forget to find a restaurant to eat, drink, and bathe before going on the bus.

Budget for 3 days Cat Ba Island itinerary

The cost is much higher if you stay in better hotels and resorts. You need to add the transfer cost from/to Hanoi as well.

March 29, 2024 December 5, 2023

Welcome to our definitive guide for Cat Ba Island in 2024! Nestled in the turquoise seas of Vietnam’s beloved  Halong B a y , Cat Ba is a blend of breathtaking nature and vibrant culture. Let’s embark on a journey to uncover the charms of this hidden gem.

1. Cat Ba Island – A Spectacular Overview

Craggy, rugged, and jungle-clad, Cat Ba Island is the largest of the 367 islands that comprise the Cat Ba Archipelago, which makes up the southeastern section of Lan Ha Bay . In this part, we invite you to embark on a voyage of discovery as we provide you an enthralling overview of Cat Ba Island, revealing its distinct charm and the unforgettable adventures that await you.

Also known as “Pearl Island,” Cat Ba is located in Cat Ba district, Hai Phong province, to the south of the world-famous Halong Bay. It is approximately 50 kilometers (32 miles) from Hai Phong City, and the journey by speedboat takes about 1 hour. The island is divided into six communes and is home to 13,000 people. Additionally, there are 4,000 residents in the floating villages just off the coast.

History And Legend

Based on studies, the history of Cat Ba Island can be traced back as far as 6,000 years ago. The name Cat Ba means “Women’s Island,” and as is common in Vietnam, there are several interesting legends associated with it. One legend states that many centuries ago, three women from the Tran Dynasty were murdered. Their bodies washed up on the shores of Cat Ba Island and were discovered by fishermen. The locals then constructed a temple for each woman, and the island later became known as Cat Ba.

Cat Ba Island boasts an incredibly diverse ecosystem with a wide variety of unique flora and fauna. There have been 1,561 plant species identified from 186 families. Additionally, there are 279 animal species, 23 of which are classified as endangered or critically endangered. Keep in mind that hotel prices tend to rise during this time, so it’s recommended to book well in advance.

Cat ba island, vietnam: the perfect halong bay alternative.

Cat Ba Island, Vietnam

Cat Ba Island is one of the best places to visit in Vietnam in my opinion, but it’s also a spot many travellers miss off their itinerary in this country… and what a shame.

#1 Because Cat Ba Island has a lovely national park at its heart – a great place to enjoy some nature time and day hiking

And…

#2 Because it’s from Cat Ba Island that you can score the best deals for the perfect Halong Bay alternative!

As I’m sure you know, Halong Bay is the UNESCO-listed, insta-famous, jaw-dropping landscape everyone has on their Vietnam bucket list

But did you know that it costs hundreds of dollars to enjoy a boat trip here?

I know, crazy!

If, like me, this mad price tag has you baulking at the idea of Halong Bay, then don’t despair!

Read on to learn how you can experience this magnificent scenery for a fraction of the usual price care of a trip to neighbouring Cat Ba Island.

Why Visit Cat Ba Island?

Vietnam, Cat Ba Island, Fishing Village

I think I’ve spelt it out pretty clearly in the title and the intro of this article but, in case you need a recap, the main reason to visit Cat Ba Island is that it makes for the perfect (budget) alternative to Halong Bay.

If, like me, you’re horrified by the idea of paying hundreds of dollars for a crowded cruise in this part of Vietnam, then listen up, because you really need to start researching Cat Ba Island boat trips instead.

Located right next to Halong Bay – it’s the next province along – Cat Ba essentially looks exactly the same as the UNESCO-listed version but just isn’t as famous.

If you want to kayak this country’s most famous landscape without the crowds and half the trash, then you need to visit Cat Ba Island.

If you want to tick a Halong Bay landscape off your bucket list, but don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars, then you need to visit Cat Ba Island.

And if you’re getting a bit tired of the hectic cities of Vietnam and want to escape the pollution and noise of Hanoi , then you need to visit Cat Ba Island.

Because Cat Ba Island really is the spot to do all of those things and more, which certainly makes it one of the top places to visit in Vietnam !

Where is Cat Ba Island?

Vietnam, Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay

So let’s start with the obvious, where is Cat Ba Island?

Essentially on the coastline closest to Hanoi – the capital of Vietnam – Cat Ba Island lies in the northeast of this country, in a province called Hai Phong, where it sits within Lan Ha Bay.

Halong Bay is located in Quang Ninh province, which is just south of Hai Phong.

Why I’m explaining this is because, geographically, Lan Ha Bay which surrounds Cat Ba Island, is the same as Halong Bay – it’s just not called Halong Bay because of an arbitrary provincial border!

But let’s be clear, the landscape looks exactly the same… because it is!

The same dramatic limestone islands and aqua-turquoise waters. The same misty, ephemeral beauty. The same snap-tastic, dramatic, magical, spellbinding charm.

Lan Ha Bay just happens to have a different name!

And because of this, the price of trips to Lan Ha Bay from Cat Ba Island are less than half, actually make that less than a quarter, of what they are to Halong Bay.

“What’s in a name?”, you might ask.

Turns out, quite a lot!

Because not only are trips to Lan Ha Bay from Cat Ba a mere fraction of the cost, they also boast a mere fraction of the crowds and a mere fraction of the chaos compared to Halong Bay too!

An absolute win in my book!

How to Get to Cat Ba Island?

Vietnam, Hanoi, Hawker

So, if this sounds like good news to you, then the first key bit of info you’ll need to know, is how to get to Cat Ba Island.

And the main thing to be aware of here is that the launch point for all transport to Cat Ba Island is Hanoi.

So first, get yourself to Hanoi, either via international or domestic flight, or via local bus, which is a more economical and better environmental option and no hardship, because the buses in Vietnam are excellent.

As always, I use Skyscanner to find the best flight deals  and the excellent 12Go to book my buses in Southeast Asia, because you can directly compare services, journey times, prices and pay securely for your tickets all at once – simples!

So once you get to Hanoi (and I recommend Little Charm Hostel there if you need to spend the night FYI), I strongly suggest you use Cat Ba Express to get to Cat Ba Island.

There are 2 companies that run the bus / boat service from Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay, but the Cat Ba Express is by far the better option.

With better buses and organisation (and no this isn’t sponsored!) I’d definitely recommend going with them and not their competitors.

A return journey from the Cat Ba Express office in Hanoi, via a bus, a boat and then another bus to Cat Ba island AND back cost me just $28 USD.

Learn more including Cat Ba Express’ departure times and how to reserve a place via their website here .

Otherwise, if you want to compare journeys from Hanoi, check out the great travel site Bookaway , who will handily give you tons of options and times to get to Cat Ba Island, so you can make the best choice.

Where to Stay on Cat Ba?

Vietnam, Lan Ha Bay, Flags

I highly recommend basing yourself in Cat Ba Town when you stay on this island, especially if you are a solo or budget traveller.

That’s because this town is where most amenities are, and where most other travellers stay, so you might feel a little isolated staying anywhere else.

Plus, Cat Ba Express will ferry you straight to Cat Ba Town when you reach the island and then drop you off at the door of your accommodation – so it was a no brainer in my opinion!

For budget travellers, Secret Garden Hostel is a great option here and I love their veggie café and family dinner vibes. However, you can’t book ahead and just have to turn up, so it can be a bit risky.

As such, you may want to stay at Luna’s House Hostel instead, which is just up the road and which you can book in advance – pretty essential during high season here.

Luna’s is where I stayed during my time on Cat Ba Island and the location, plus rooftop café, made it a good solid option.

Dorms are pretty cosy, but have privacy curtains and individual fans which are a blessing in the humidity let me tell you!

Things to Do on Cat Ba

Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay, Kayak

So the main thing to do from Cat Ba Island, and why most travellers head there, is to cruise Lan Ha Bay… obviously!

But first I want to tell you about the other things there are to do on Cat Ba Island, including the great national park that lies at its centre.

I highly recommend spending at least 2 nights on the island if you can, 3 would be even better, because this will give you enough time to experience a day trip to Lan Ha Bay and a day in the national park here.

I recommend the following itinerary as a good starting point…

Day 1: Arrive on Cat Ba Island from Hanoi and prepare trips for the following days

Day 2: Hike in Cat Ba National Park

Day 3: Take a Lan Ha Bay day trip

Day 4: Return to Hanoi

When it comes to hiking in Cat Ba’s National Park, you can either enjoy a self-guided day trip or take an organised excursion.

The basic premise is the same, you take an early bus from Cat Ba Town to the western edge of the national park, walk across it, stop to enjoy the high lookout point in the middle, and then continue onto the coastal edge of it.

From here you can pick up a boat, which will take you back to Cat Ba Town and give you a mini glimpse into the sort of scenery you can enjoy the next day of your boat trip.

As always, I recommend you download the local maps.me resource onto your phone before setting off on any independent hikes.

How to Score a Budget Halong Bay Trip?

Vietnam, Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba Express

And now we come to the crux of it all, because there’s no question that the best thing to do in Cat Ba Island – the reason most people come here and the whole reason I wanted to write this article – is to experience the ideal Halong Bay alternative!

And I achieved it, here’s how…

Ok, ok, as we’ve discovered, the offshore landscape here isn’t technically Halong Bay, it’s Lan Ha Bay. But honestly, I challenge you to see a photo from both and to be able to tell the difference, aka you won’t be able!

So now it’s time to call upon the services of good old Cat Ba Express again, who have a handily-located office right along the waterfront road in Cat Ba Town. Here you can book your day trip to Lan Ha Bay.

Costing just $23 USD, yes you heard right, that’s just $23 USD, you can spend an entire day in this famous landscape for an absolute steal of a price.

Tours take place on local junk boats , which are a bit like large barges, and normally include a trip to see how locals live out here on their boats, as well as snorkelling opps, photo stops aplenty and, best of all, a chance to kayak in a part of the bay that forms a sort of lagoon and had not another tourist in sight.

That’s right, not another tourist . Put that in your pipe and smoke it Halong!

There’s also lunch and morning tea included in your Lan Ha day trip too.

Sound like a bargain? I think so friends!

And even more so, when I heard horror stories about the insane boat crowding, horrendous amounts of trash and generally awful experiences from everyone I spoke to who had sailed Halong Bay instead.

Annnnnd, let’s not forget, paid ridiculous amounts for!

In contrast, day trips to Lan Ha Bay from Cat Ba Island are relaxed, affordable, accessible and short.

You get to see and snap those amazing limestone islands without the hordes of people, or the tragic trash levels, and you even get to kayak and snorkel in and around them too.

What a result!

If you want to know more about how I budgeted, and how much I spent on my trip to Vietnam, then check out this post I wrote that details all my costs and expenses over 2 weeks.

Things to Know About Your Trip…

Vietnam, Hanoi, Street Hawker

It’s important to know that in this tropical country of Vietnam it can be cloudy and rainy at almost any time of the year.

I visited Cat Ba Island and Hanoi during April – technically one of the few months in which it is meant to be dry weather in both the north and south of Vietnam – but let me tell you, it was not dry in Cat Ba Island or Hanoi!

In fact, it rained heavily most days I was there and, from what I could tell, this actually seems to be pretty common! Dry season tch!

As such, you’ll def want to come prepared when you visit Cat Ba Island with a thin light rainjacket and some warm layers and long-legged pants.

Sunscreen, sunglasses and insect repellent would also be good things to pack, as would some swimwear, towel and a dry bag.

There are ATMs on Cat Ba island, but it’s probably not a bad idea to bring what you need money-wise with you from Hanoi too.

Book your transport to the island with Cat Ba Express at least one day in advance and reserve your accommodation and boat trips in advance too during the high season.

Finally, bring a big smile safe in the knowledge you will have saved yourself a fortune on visiting and seeing one of the world’s most iconic landscapes!

You’re welcome!

Mini Travel Guide to North Vietnam

Vietnam, Lan Ha Bay, Limestone

When to Visit North Vietnam?

Vietnam is a pretty tricky country to get right climate-wise!

For a start, it has several of them!

And the north is an especially precarious one to nail!

The spring months of March and April are meant to be the best ones to visit north Vietnam but, as I mentioned in this article, when I visited at this time of year it rained every day, so y’know…

The other best time to visit this part of the country is during the autumn season between September and October, so that’s worth giving a go!

The months I’d avoid heading to the north of Vietnam in would be the mega-humid summer from May to August, and the cold wet winters from November through February – don’t think they’d be very fun at all!

Best Travel Insurance for North Vietnam

I’d never even consider travelling to Vietnam without proper coverage and always recommend travel insurance from World Nomads who I’ve used throughout my time in this country and beyond.

I love that they cover a wide range of adventure activities – which is definitely needed for a country like Vietnam – as well as their great customer service and the fact that you can easily claim or extend your coverage while you’re still abroad, online.

Alternatively, if you’re a remote worker or digital nomad seeking travel health insurance, look no further than Safetywing’s great Nomad Insurance policies.

These guys will cover you at some seriously great prices.

5 Packing Essentials for North Vietnam

#1 Lonely Planet Guidebook – The Vietnam Lonely Planet is excellent and very helpful for any trip to this country with lots of top tips and recommended places to eat.

#2 Walking Shoes – There’s likely to be a lot of walking in Vietnam, especially around those temples and cities. As such, I advise packing a pair of good runners, like these New Balance trainers , which were perfect for my time here.

#3 European & British Power Adapters – Vietnam has a mix of power outlets, but generally opts for a mix of the European and British ones, so make sure you come prepared with a Skross world adapter .

#4 Camera and Lens – I love my Sony A6000 mirrorless , which was ideal for capturing the colour, chaos and cuisine and charm of Vietnam.

#5 Travel Scarf – A great multi-purpose travel item that can be used to safely store valuables, as well as cover your shoulders while you explore many of Vietnam’s top sights, a travel scarf is a must for me!

How to Save When you Spend in North Vietnam

When it comes to paying for things in Vietnam, you want to ensure you’re not being charged overseas transaction fees or getting poor exchange rates when using your card abroad, which is why I always take my Wise Card away with me wherever I travel.

The easy way to spend abroad with real exchange rates, no markups and no sneaky transaction fees, you can use your Wise card just like a debit card in Vietnam… and it links easily with Google and Apple pay – sold!

This guide, exclusively dedicated to Cat Ba, provides you with practical information and advice to better prepare your first stay on Cat Ba Island. Take a look to learn all about Cat Ba and its wonders at sea and in the forest.

Guide to Cat Ba

Location of cat ba.

The Cat Ba archipelago consists of 367 islands and islets, the largest of which is Cat Ba, located South of Halong. With its exceptional biodiversity, it is one of the world’s biosphere reserves recognized by Unesco.

Cat Ba is attached to the Cat Hai island district, Haiphong city. At an altitude of 70 metres, Cat Ba Island covers an area of 345 square kilometres, the heart of which is Cat Ba city, located 30 km from Haiphong to the East, Hanoi 150 km and Halong 25 km at the South-East. In addition, there are the six communes, Gia Luan, Hien Hao, Phu Long, Tran Chau, Viet Hai and Xuan Dam.

Climate of Cat Ba Island

Characterized by a tropical climate with monsoons, Cat Ba also experiences direct influences from the ocean climate. This gives it moderate temperatures varying on average between 15 - 20 degrees in winter and 25 - 30 degrees in summer. The rainy season in Cat Ba lasts during the months of July and August.

In particular, the place owes its great biodiversity to Cat Ba National Park , which spans 15,200 hectares, including 570 hectares of primitive jungle. There are limestone mountains measuring on average 150 metres high. The most important is the Cao Vong peak, 322 metres high. The road crossing the island is 27 kilometres long allows you to enjoy the loops in the forest and also the landscapes by the sea.

It’s 139 small beaches bordered by clean water invite you to spend hours of relaxation with small waves. The most famous sandy beaches of Cat Ba are the three Cat Co and the one nestled on Monkey Island.

Cat Ba is also known for housing the famous archaeological vestige of Cai Beo dating back to 6475 - 4200 years, classified as a national vestige in 2009.

Swimming, kayaking, trekking, climbing, visiting fishing villages and caves make Cat Ba a destination of choice in Vietnam in the North for lovers of the sea and nature.

Periods to visit Cat Ba Island

Avoid leaving for Cat Ba:

- during its peak season between May and August when the island is taken over by storm, especially on weekends and

- during Vietnamese public holidays from April 30 to May 1 and a few days around these dates.

In fact, the traffic jam at the Got pier leading to Cat Ba Island must actually spoil any plan with the long tail of vehicles before your eyes. Hotel reservations are also very difficult due to the excessive need and the exorbitant cost of services.

Regarding security at Cat Ba , especially during cruise excursions , given the flights that still exist for certain cases, we strongly advise you to take good care of your personal belongings on board. Papers and valuables should be placed in your suitcases with a lock.

Cat Ba Island means “Women’s Island” as its historical name “Cac Ba” (“Cac” meaning all and “Ba” meaning women). Legend has it that many centuries ago, three women of the Tran Dynasty were passed away in the fighting against the evaders from the sea. Their remains were found at the beach and local people built a temple to worship them on the island. Later, local fisherman named the island to thanks these female heroes

Archeological evidence suggests that people have lived on Cat Ba Island for almost 6,000 years, with the earliest settlements being found on the southeastern tip of the island close to the area where Ben Beo Harbor located today. In 1938, a group of French archeologists discovered human remains belonging “to the Cai Beo people of the Ha Long culture, which lived between 4,000 and 6,500 years ago… considered to be perhaps the first population group occupying the North-Eastern territorial waters of Vietnam… the Cai Beo people may be an intermediary link between the population strata at the end of the Neolithic Age, some 4,000 years ago”.

In more recent history, Cat Ba Island was inhabited mostly by Viet-Chinese fisherman and was largely influenced by both the French and American wars. The island was a strategic look-out point and bombing during the wars often forced local residents to hide among the Island’s many caves.

It consists of 367 islands, off the coast of Hai Phong City and Quang Ninh Province, and approximately half of its area is covered by a National Park, which is home to the highly endangered Cat Ba Langur. Administratively, it is the islands of Cat Hai District, Hai Phong City.

Since 1997, Cat Ba Town has grown rapidly and has become a tourist hub for both the island and greater Ha Long Bay.

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island: The Complete Travel Guide

cat ba travel blog

traveller Tarang

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island was never a part of my bucket list. However, a little research led me to it. Eventually, I managed to make sense of its perplexing geography. This paved the way for me to go backpacking to Cat Ba Island and I ended up having one of the most memorable trips of my life.

I guess some things just happen to you. They happen to you in the most unexpected ways and the best way to enjoy them is by embracing them. This is my story of going backpacking to Cat Ba Island. I’d always heard lots of wonderful things about Cat Ba Island. I just had to visit there myself to believe all that beauty present.

Cat Ba Island is surrounded by emerald blue seas. It comprises lush green rainforests and sky-rocketing limestone islands. The offbeat travel lover that I am, I ended up searching for an alternative (to the commercialized Ha Long Bay) and that is how I managed to go backpacking to Cat Ba Island.

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island – An Overview

Vietnam is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful travel destinations in South East Asia. With beautiful beaches, busy cities and lush green countryside, Vietnam has plenty to offer to a traveller. Cat Ba Island is one such relatively unknown yet beautiful destination. Although Cat Ba Island is an easy destination to travel to, knowing some key points will help you plan a better trip.

The Ha Long Bay region is situated in the northeastern part of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. This beautiful region principally consists of three bays – the popular Ha Long Bay in the centre, Lan Ha Bay to the southwest and Bai Tu Long Bay in the northeast.

Now, a number of websites and blogs will tell you that Cat Ba Island is situated in Ha Long Bay. That is not completely true. What they mean is that Cat Ba Island is situated in the Ha Long Bay region. Cat Ba is the biggest out of the 366 gorgeous islands that make up Lan Ha Bay.

Lan Ha Bay is gradually gaining popularity, but it continues to be a great option for those who like quiet and untouched locales. This is how backpacking to Cat Ba Island happened to me.

How much does it Cost to Go Backpacking to Cat Ba Island?

Having a pre-defined budget is an extremely important component of any backpacking trip. Therefore, let me share the tentative costs of all the expenses that you might incur on Cat Ba Island.

The currency I used was the Vietnamese Dong. My home currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). However, I will share the budget in all three currencies below i.e. Vietnamese Dong (VND), US Dollars (USD) and the Indian Rupee (INR).

At the time of my backpacking trip to Cat Ba Island, the exchange rate between the three currencies was as follows – 1 USD= 23172.82 VND and 1 INR = 336.52 VND.

Let me now share my detailed budget breakdown with you so that you get a rough idea as to how much money is needed for taking a budget trip to Cat Ba Island.

Accommodation

A decent room at a hostel cost me 116057.50 VND (5 USD; 344 INR) per night. Three people could be accommodated in this room.

You can have a fairly good meal in Cat Ba for about 92834 VND (4 USD; 275 INR) per night.

Bottled water

A 1-litre bottle of water will roughly cost you 5000-10000 VND (20-40 cents; 14-28 INR) depending on where you buy it from.

A glass of local beer generally costs about 23200 VND (1 USD; 70 INR) in cafes and restaurants.

A cup of cappuccino and a glass of fresh fruit juice would roughly be priced at 34812 VND (1.5 USD; 105 INR).

Internal transport

Renting a two-wheeler will cost about 116057.50 VND (5 USD; 344 INR) per day in the offseason, and 185692.00 VND (8 USD; 550 INR) per day in peak season.

Taxis in Cat Ba are generally not metered and expect to pay a minimum of 50,000 VND (2.15 USD; 148 INR) for short distances.

Sightseeing

Most entrance tickets (for example, to Cat Ba National Park and Cannon Fort) cost 40,000 VND (1.75 USD; 118.6 INR).

This depends on the type of boat, the duration, the level of luxury, etc.

The boat I opted for costs 1,000,000 VND (43 USD; 2965 INR) for a day. I had the boat all to myself.

Overnight Cruise trips cost anywhere over 1,856,680 (80 USD; 5500 INR).

Additionally, activities like kayaking, cycling, snorkelling, and rock climbing are included in most of these packages.

Having a fixed budget always helps on a backpacking trip. That way you get to spend more in times of emergency. As a backpacker traveling solo to Cat Ba Island, please make sure that you don’t waste money on frivolous things.

Stay cautious of what you are spending and where you are spending. Writing up each and every expense will help you a lot in deciding your next spending. Try this out and see for yourself.

The Real Deal: Is Cat Ba Island Worth Visiting?

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island was one of the warmest experiences I’ve had, despite the cold temperatures. Stay is cheap, food is delicious, local people are hospitable.

I would not be lying when I say I did NOT want to leave Cat Ba. I fell so much in love with the Utopian island, that I went to the extent of finding out long-term lodging prices at my hostel.

I mean, where else in Southeast Asia would a vegetarian be spoilt for food choices?

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island

So now that we are clear that backpacking to Cat Ba Island is totally worth it, let us find how the most exciting places to visit in the region.

Beautiful Places to Visit & Things to Do while B ackpacking to Cat Ba Island

There’s much more to Cat Ba Island than just marvelling at the sight of limestone Karsts.

What I love the most about Cat Ba is its diversity. Despite being surrounded by water, it does not limit you to activities like snorkelling, kayaking and diving only. There is so much more to do.

Here is my personal recommendation of places that you most certainly should visit –

Cat Ba National Park

Backpacking To Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba National Park spans an extensive part of Cat Ba Island. It is home to thousands of species of plants and animals – some that are even endangered.

There are a number of hiking trails that you can choose from at the national park, depending on the difficulty level. The view from the top is absolutely stunning. It’s a sight that comes with unimaginable shades of green.

An alternate trek takes you to the fishing village, which I missed out on because I was late. Make sure you reach the park by 8 am if you intend to go on this trek.

Tip: Carry sufficient quantities of water and energy-inducing snacks like fruits, chocolates and energy bars.

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island

Trung Trang Caves

An uncommon and unique place to explore while backpacking to Cat Ba Island is the Trung Trang caves. They fall on the way from Cat Ba National Park to Cat Ba Town. A ticket to the Park will grant you free entry into these caves.

Locally popular by the name “golden treasure,” the Trung Trang caves are a hoard of natural stalactites that evolved over millions of years.

Not all travel guides and locals will urge you to visit these caves, but I would. For a brief two hours, I almost thought of myself as living in the Paleolithic Age – it was surreal.

Tip: Beware of birds, insects and bats that might greet you as you squeeze your way through the caves.

Trung Trang Caves

Cannon Fort

Cannon Fort is a site oozing with historical significance, and it doesn’t stop there. It offers panoramic views of clear blue waters, that no photograph can do justice to.

The Vietnamese took advantage of its strategic position back during the Vietnam War. To get a stronger feel of its history, you can explore some of the tunnels scattered across the fort.

Due to the increasing number of tourists, the fort now also features a museum and a cafe.

Tip: Carry a few cold drinks and snacks that you can binge on as you watch the sun go down. The cafe here is well-equipped but on the pricey side.

Cat Ba Island Boat Tours

What I love the most about these Cat Ba island tours is that they’re a complete package. They don’t end at just chilling in the boat and making your way back to the town.

On the day of the boat tour, we started our day at about 9 am. Our guide picked us up at the hostel and drove us to the pier.

You do not need to restrict yourself to simply staring at the limestone mountains from a distance, you know. You could sail closer to these islands, and even be on a few of them. How does that sound?

Leaving Cat Ba without embarking on an adventure of the sort would be sad, you know.

Tip: There are cheaper options available for taking a boat tour. Make sure you ask around before making a choice (I ended up touring around in a relatively expensive boat, for I didn’t do my research properly).

Cat Ba Island Boat Tour

Floating Villages

It was eye-opening to see the numerous floating villages that marked my way.

Imagine living life on the water. I couldn’t stop thinking about the kind of life the natives lead in Cat Ba.

Do they read the newspaper? Do they cut cake on their birthdays? And finally, do they vote during elections?

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island

While around Cat Ba, go kayaking. We were then taken to a spot in the bay popular for canoeing, snorkelling and kayaking.

Life jackets and paddles were handed over, and we were ushered to a little kayak floating by the shore. We made our way through dark caves in the most isolated inlets of the bay.

The ice-cold water seeping through the kayak was numbing, but it didn’t matter. What added to the beauty was the majestic cliffs staring down at me, and making me feel ridiculously small.

Tip: Carry a change of clothes. Spending the rest of the day in wet, damp clothes could be displeasing.

Kayaking in Cat Ba

Cycling at Viet Hai Village

My first stop at the Island was Viet Hai village where I explored the entire island on bicycles. It’s an eco-friendly and peaceful way of touring the island.

This was also where I had lunch. I was served the best fried rice I had in Vietnam on this very island. On request, the lady also peeled some fresh and juicy oranges for me.

Next, my guide asked me (in a very shy tone) if I’d want to try smoking tobacco the Vietnamese way. They (my guide and the lady) were absolutely delighted when I agreed.

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island

Fishing Village

Fishing villages are places where the economy almost completely depends on fishing. They are generally isolated, with tourists and locals stopping by to purchase fresh, cheap seafood.

Our guide led us to a huge fish that seemed like their catch of the day.

Tip: Wear a mask if the smell of fish irks you.

Monkey Island

In case you’re wondering, this island is exactly what the name suggests. The island welcomed us with hundreds of monkeys, that seemed to be enjoying a regular lazy day by the beach.

There have been cases of these monkeys stealing from and harming tourists in the past. Why? Because human beings maltreated them and their ecosystem in the past.

Monkey Island is also popular for its spectacular views. Now, I wasn’t prepared for this mini-trek through mucky trails and razor-sharp rocks. However, not going was not an option.

Carry shoes on Monkey Island

I wasn’t aware that Monkey Island would require hiking. Therefore, ended up only with slippers on.

I started hiking up in my flimsy slippers – GoPro in one hand and the other holding on to the trees for support. The hike isn’t difficult, but it is necessary to be cautious.

When I reached the top, I was left baffled. I completely forgot how terribly my slipper clad feet hurt, and how hungry I was. It was soon time to head down, for getting back before sunset was necessary.

My Cat Ba Island Tour was coming to an end.

Tip: Do not come in the way of the monkeys and they won’t either.

3 Instagrammable Pictures to Capture while Backpacking on Cat Ba Island

In the contemporary world, Instagram seems to be a decent place for sharing travel pictures.

So, if you are one of those travelers who are on the lookout for pictures that are both fun and honestly captured, here are three ideas from Cat Ba Island.

  • Piping up at Viet Hai Village

Vietnam has a strong smoking culture amongst middle-aged and older citizens.

You’ll find locals smoking tobacco using all sorts of pipes and equipment when you walk on the streets.

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island

2. Enjoying lush green nature at Cat Ba National Park

Cat Ba Island is not just about water sports. It also offers a wide array of hikes, trails and viewpoints.

This is what made Cat Ba a complete package for me. One moment I was swimming by the beach and the next moment, I was hiking through the hills.

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island

3. Taking a Feet selfie at Fishing Village’s painted wooden plank

Everything about the fishing village was aesthetic.

The wooden planks we were walking on, were painted a beautiful colour. We simply couldn’t resist clicking a picture.

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island

These are a few ideas for your Instagram profile from my side. I am sure you will have even more ideas.

Feel free to share them with me in the comments section at the end of this blog.

Hiring a Travel Guide at Cat Ba Island

I know a lot of backpackers don’t prefer hiring tour guides when exploring new places. However, what needs to be understood is that a native resident of a region who becomes a tour guide knows much more about his locale than we outsiders ever will.

Hence, we should surely hire a guide and explore a locale through him. Trust me, you will end up seeing and understanding so much more.

The day I took a boat tour was the time when I first hired a guide. Not only was he a wonderful man but also extremely knowledgeable and cooperative. I understood the region more because of his innate detailing.

Where to Stay on Cat Ba Island on a Budget?

As usual, I showed up on the island with no idea about where I was going to stay. The bus dropped me on the main road, and I started walking around the town aimlessly.

A number of hostels and hotels marked my way. I finally decided to make my way into a cheap yet decent looking one – Cat Ba Hostel. It was within walking distance of the entire town. It also had English-speaking staff and came with free breakfast.

All it didn’t offer was oceanfront views like a lot of other hostels. However, if you want to save money and travel on a budget like I did, this place is perfect.

Private Bedrooms

116057.50 VND (5 USD per night) for 3 people.

Dormitories

69634.50 VND (3 USD per night) per person

Tip: Try going backpacking to Cat Ba Island during the off-season. Else, expect substantially higher prices in peak months. By the way, I went backpacking to Cat Ba Island in the month of December which is considered to be off-season.

If you’re looking out for accommodation that’s more exotic and secluded, you could head to one of the nearby islands.

Most of them can be accessed by boat leaving from Cat Ba Pier. However, be prepared to shell out more bucks at these solitary locations.

Eating Out on Cat Ba Island

You know, usually, when a traveler wanders off to an island, the craving happens for colder foods. However, my preference was entirely different. All I craved at Cat Ba was a hot coffee, a sandwich and some warmth. Reason being, the cold temperature.

Actually, I had met with low temperatures, gloomy skies and cold weather throughout my time in Vietnam.  I hoped for sunny skies and higher temperatures because it’s an island. I realized I was wrong the second I got off the bus, and disappointment followed.

However, after a little recuperation of my tummy, I was up and running.

Cafes and Restaurants at Cat Ba Island

After checking in to Cat Ba Hostel and freshening up, I ventured out in search of a cosy cafe.

A multitude of European looking cafes lined the streets. Weirdly, I wasn’t sure if I wanted a baguette anymore. Most cafes had their menus chalked out on little blackboards put up for display.

I was spoilt for choice.

Eating Out in Cat Ba

For breakfast, I decided to head to ‘Like Coffee.’

A local that seemed to be the owner, ushered me to a cute yellow bench. ‘Hey Jude’ by ‘The Beatles played at a low volume and I enjoyed an egg sandwich with a hot cup of coffee.

All of this costs just 58028.75 VND (2.5 USD).

Cat Ba was heaven in terms of its food offerings. I made it a point to visit a new food joint for every meal. It may I sound like I’m exaggerating when I say this but not a single place disappointed.

One fine meal consisted of a vegetarian pizza and cheesy French fries. Then followed spring rolls along with a blueberry smoothie, which was irresistible even in the cold weather.

Food in Cat Ba

Stalls in Cat Ba also sell some great, cheap desserts. One of my favourites was a pancake that most street vendors sell from around 7 pm to 3 am. They have way too many flavours and variety on offer, and you MUST try it.

General Pricing of Cafes at Cat Ba

Here is a rough idea of how much eating and drinking stuff costs at Cat Ba Island.

Thus, food is affordable at Cat Ba Island. If you can manage to get decent budget accommodation, your overall expenses won’t hurt your pocket as a backpacker.

How to get to Cat Ba Island?

Despite being tucked away, backpacking to Cat Ba Island is viable owing to its fairly good connectivity. There are two popular options for getting to the Utopian island – by bus or by train.

Trains are often more comfortable, picturesque and even cheaper. Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to travel by train while backpacking to Cat Ba Island.

A number of operators run buses that will take you from Hanoi to Cat Ba. Some of these are Daichi Travel, Full Moon, and Cat Ba Express.

I personally resorted to just one website ( a21tours ) to book buses in Vietnam.

The process is simple. First, you send them a WhatsApp message defining the bus/van/car you want to book. Then, they send you a payment link. Once the payment is done, your booking would be confirmed.

Most buses depart from the Old Quarter in Hanoi . This is where many hostels, hotels, guesthouses and Airbnb’s are located.

Transport Options within Cat Ba Island

Although Cat Ba Island is a tiny place to explore, you cannot rely completely on walking. Following are options you can consider for local commute on Cat Ba Island:

Motorbikes on Cat Ba Island

If you ask me, I’d say that the best way to explore Cat Ba Island is on a motorbike. It’s the cheapest and also the most convenient way of seeing the island.

To be honest, December might not have been the best time to rent out a motorbike. It was rainy, damp and cold.

My nose resembled that of Rudolph the red nose reindeer within seconds. My hands turned into popsicles as I struggled to battle against the cold winds.

Luckily, I bought myself a pair of gloves from a cute, plump lady who seemed to have knit them by herself. “ 20,000 dongs only, verrry warrmm,” she said in broken English. There was no need for me to bargain. (20,000 VND equals less than a dollar.)

Taxis available on Cat Ba Island

Those who do not know how to ride a bike, fret not. In the end, Cat Ba is a tourist destination and no such place is complete without taxi services.

Getting around Cat Ba Island could also be done on a motorbike taxi (xe om) or a car taxi. Now, this is generally an expensive affair. On the bright side, these drivers also act as guides.

Tip: If you’re an avid traveler and wish to explore more of Southeast Asia, consider learning how to ride a bike. It will be rewarding, cheap and convenient in most countries.

Backpacking to Cat Ba Island

They say, “The best places are those that are discovered by accident.” I’d like to modify this quote a bit and say that the best places are those that are explored by accident.”

Backpacking to Cat Ba has been such a wonderful experience for me. I’d urge more travelers to visit this part of the world and not just restrict themselves to Ha Long Bay.

Happy wayfaring.

Where To Stay

There are plenty of hotels and hostels available on Cat Ba island. You will find most of them on the waterfront even though some hotels have recently opened a bit more inland. Generally, you pay a bit more for a room with sea view. When you’re less abled or not in great physical condition, make sure that you book a hotel with an elevator as a lot of hotels won’t have any. For a luxurious experience, you can go to ‘Blue Lagoon Cat Ba’ located left of the welcome gate.

Recommended hotels and resorts in Cat Ba:

Things To Do

Besides the obvious things to do on an island, going to the beach, visit some caves and going on a cruise , there are several other activities you can partake in.

  • You can visit ‘Monkey Island’ where Monkeys roam free. The monkeys on the island are long tailed macaques and are not endemic to the island.
  • Little over a mile north of town (2 kilometers) you can find the ‘Cannon Fort’. This fort was built in 1942 as a defense installation and is a popular spot to watch the sunset.
Activities: Yoga is quite a popular activity on the island and for those who enjoy lush green forests and visit to Viet Hai village is recommended.

Where To Eat

Being right by the sea (it’s an island), sea food is very popular on Cat Ba island. Some recommended restaurants are: ‘Phuong Nhung Restaurant’, ‘Lang Chai sea-food restaurant’, ‘Phương Phương Restaurant’ and for vegetarians the ‘Buddha Belly Restaurant’ comes recommended.

Suggested Itinerary

There are so many different things to do on Cat Ba island and most people spend around three days on the island. Below we made a three day itinerary which is, of course, just a suggestion.

  • Visit the beach! Cat Ba has several beautiful beaches notably Cat Ba 1, 2 and 3. We suggest you go to Cat Ba 2 as it has the reputation of being the most beautiful one.
  • If you forget your bathing suit, no worries, there are plenty of options to rent a bathing suit for the day. Once at the beach you can just relax and get your tan on in the sun, go for a swim or do some snorkeling . It’s recommended to get out of the water before 6.30 p.m. as the tide and current can become quite treacherous.
  • After the beach, you can go to Cannon fort to admire the sunset. After sunset enjoy a well-earned dinner and perhaps even some drinks at the many restaurants and bars Cat Ba has to offer.
  • Take a trip to the beautiful Lan Ha Bay to take in the wonderful scenery. Do a bit of kayaking to explore some of the areas that are inaccessible by boat. Be sure to stop by Monkey Island to see some of the Monkeys and do some snorkeling or just simply go for a nice refreshing swim.
  • At night enjoy a fresh seafood dish called ‘Tu Hai’. It’s a highly nutritious dish which is not as popular as oysters or shrimp but still very delicious!
  • Visit one of the oldest fishing villages in Vietnam, Cai Beo ancient fishing village!
  • Here you’ll find many interesting sights and hear many intriguing stories about the fishing village. Make a stop at the village to meet the locals and see first-hand how they catch and subsequently prepare the fish.
  • Another option would be to go to the Cat Ba National park. The park is known for its biodiversity and is a prime example of Eco-tourism. You could even visit the fishing village and Cat Ba National park on the same day!
At night you can enjoy some delicious seafood! Regional specialties like Blue Crab of Squid come highly recommended!

Notes: All Hotels and restaurants are now open in Cat Ba Island.

Cat Ba island is a chilled-out place with a few small, though nice beaches, a rich history, and there are some spots with good nightlife, which are pretty cheap!

During the wars, the island of Cat Ba was a strategic lookout point. During the bombing, local residents hid among the island’s many caves. The cave hospital is one of the impressive leftovers.

Here are all your hotel options in Cat Ba.

6 best beaches of Cat Ba Island & best time to visit them

  • Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island is home to several beautiful beaches that offer opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. Here are some of the most popular beaches on Cat Ba Island:

  • Exploring the beaches
  • Best time to visit
  • Cat Co Beach
  • Tung Thu Beach
  • Cat Dua Beach
  • Ba Trai Dao Beach
  • Moody & Tiger Beach
  • Secluded beaches

Exploring the beaches of Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island boasts a diverse array of beaches for every taste. While some beaches are easily accessible, others are hidden away on the island or even located on the smaller surrounding islands, that requirs a kayak or boat to reach. The popular beaches tend to get crowded on weekends and holidays, but it’s worth noting that most Vietnamese prefer visiting the beach in the late afternoon when the sun is milder.

For a more secluded experience, exploring the lesser-known beaches can be rewarding, offering you a chance to enjoy the beach with fewer people around. However, it’s important to be aware that like many other beaches in Vietnam, some of the secluded beaches on Cat Ba Island may suffer from pollution and litter issues.

Best time to visit the beaches of Cat Ba Island

The best time to visit the beaches of Cat Ba Island is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During this time, the weather is generally sunny and dry, with pleasant temperatures and low humidity. This makes it ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and other beach activities.

In particular, the months of March and April are a great time to visit the beaches of Cat Ba Island. During these months, the weather is typically warm and sunny, with clear skies and low chances of rain. The water is also usually calm and clear, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

1. Cat Co Beach

Cat Co Beach on Cat Ba Island

Situated conveniently next to Cat Ba Town , Cat Co Beach on Cat Ba Island offers three picturesque beaches—Cat Co 1, Cat Co 2, and Cat Co 3—all adjacent to each other. These beaches are the most accessible ones on the island, making them the most popular choice. The stunning views from the shores are captivating, and you can find hotels and resorts right on the beach, allowing you to wake up to the sight of the ocean and easily stroll onto the sandy stretches.

Rock trail on Cat Ba Island

The waters surrounding Cat Co Beach are generally calm, thanks to their location within a bay. This makes swimming and water activities enjoyable. Moreover, a very nice scenic walk, known as the Rock trail, connects Cat Co 3 and Cat Co 2. Along this trail, you can see the panoramic views of Cat Ba Beach as well as the breathtaking scenery of Lan Ha Bay.

2. Tung Thu Beach

Tung Thu Beach on Cat Ba Island

Tung Thu Beach is also easy accessibility from Cat Ba Town. While popular, it tends to attract fewer people compared to the well-known Cat Co beaches. This creates a more relaxed atmosphere if you are looking for a more peaceful beach time.

Nestled within its own bay, the beach benefits from the surrounding cliffs, resulting in calm waters perfect for swimming and soaking up the sun. Additionally, it is also beautiful to see these towering cliffs as a scenic backdrop.

There are a few cafes, restaurants, as well as restrooms and showers close to the beach. In additional, the beach is also kept clean.

3. Cat Dua Beach

Cat Dua beach on Monkey Island

Cat Dua Beach, also known as Monkey Island Beach, is located on Monkey Island , just a boat ride away from Ben Beo Harbour. This idyllic beach offers a range of activities and attractions for you to enjoy.

One of the main highlights of Cat Dua Beach is the opportunity to stay on Monkey Island itself. The island offers various accommodation options, including a resort and cozy homestays.

For those seeking adventure, renting a kayak is a popular choice. This allows you to paddle your way to other nearby beaches, exploring the scenic coastline and discovering hidden gems along the way. Alternatively, you can climb to the viewpoint, from where you can admire breathtaking panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape.

As the name suggests, Monkey Island is also home to a population of monkeys. While it’s undoubtedly fascinating to observe these playful creatures, it’s important to exercise caution and avoid excessive interaction with them for both your safety and the monkeys’ well-being.

4. Ba Trai Dao Beach

Three Peaches Beach Cat Ba

Ba Trai Dao Beach, also known as Three Peaches Beach, is situated on a separate island next to Cat Ba. Accessible only by boat, it is a popular stop for cruises through Lan Ha Bay . The beach’s small size is compensated by its stunning scenery, offering panoramic views of turquoise waters and majestic limestone karsts. It’s an excellent spot for kayaking, allowing you to explore the bay’s intricate network of islets and caves.

5. Moody & Tiger Beach

rock climbing in Cat Ba Island on Tiger Beach

Moody Beach and Tiger Beach, located close to each other on Cat Ba Island, are renowned as the premier rock climbing spots in the area. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced climber, these beaches offer fantastic opportunities to engage in this exhilarating activity. The diverse rock formations provide an exciting challenge for climbers of all skill levels, with routes tailored to accommodate various abilities.

6. Secluded beaches of Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island offers a handful of secluded beaches that provide a tranquil escape from the crowds. One such beach is located in front of Woodstock Beach Camp, offering a small yet picturesque shoreline. With stunning views and the option to rent kayaks, you can enjoy the beauty of the surroundings and explore the coastline at your own pace. Hammocks on the beach add an extra touch of relaxation.

renting a kayak on Cat Ba Beach

Another secluded beach worth mentioning is the private beach at the abandoned Bayview Resort. As the resort is no longer operational, there is a high chance of having the beach all to yourself. However, it is unfortunate that due to the abandoned nature of the area, the beach may suffer from pollution and trash issues.

Bayview resorts with private beach on Cat Ba Island

While most beaches on Cat Ba Island are concentrated in the southern region, there are some areas in the north where you can still find access to the water from the rocks or opt to rent kayaks for further exploration.
