Landmark moment: Moscow Zoo welcomes first giant panda cub in Russian history
Posted: October 24, 2023 | Last updated: June 30, 2024
On August 24, 2023, a historic moment occurred at the Moscow Zoo as the first giant panda cub in Russian history was born. This remarkable event, part of an international program dedicated to the conservation, protection, and research of giant pandas, marked a significant milestone for both Russia and the global environmental community. Weighing approximately 150 grams, the gender of the cub remains unknown, but the young mother, Dingding, has shown remarkable care and acceptance of her offspring. In an extraordinary achievement, this cub was conceived naturally, a rare occurrence in panda breeding, and it was made possible with the guidance of Chinese experts. The success of this endeavor is further underscored by the fact that the parents, Ruyi and Dingding, are relatively young, at seven and six years old, respectively, whereas giant pandas typically give birth when they are 8-10 years old.

A giant panda cub is born in Russia for the first time
STORY: This case is a unique one because Ru Yi and Ding Ding are young: they are seven and six years old. Typically, the first cub is born when the parents reach the age of eight to ten years old.
Getting offspring of pandas is very difficult. The birth of cubs is both a great success and the result of a long work of specialists.
Ru Yi and Ding Ding arrived in Moscow in 2019 to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and China. The Moscow Zoo was actively preparing for their arrival: employees were being trained for several months in Chinese panda kennel. Such activities were conducted in order to learn how to take care of pandas.
This spring Ru Yi and Ding Ding became a couple. An expert on breeding giant pandas from China arrived to control and monitor the process.

Danilovsky Market
Danilovsky Market, located in a flat, circular Soviet modernist building, which looks like a kind of retro spaceship, is still a trendsetter. Come here for the best Vietnamese pho soup in Moscow and the famous “rat” burger (which is, in fact, made from nutria meat), as well as fresh produce from Russia’s southern provinces and a small vintage market in one of the annexes.
Bricket Market
Bricket Market, located on the top floor of the trendy shopping mall Tsvetnoy opened in September 2019. Head to Testa for Neapolitan pizza, Inzhir for innovative desserts and coffee and Ostorozhno, Slon! (Look Out, Elephant!), where an Indian chef cooks traditional thali set meals. There’s an open space in the middle of the market, which is used for public talks.
Central Market
Central Market is located right across from the station exit at Trubnaya Metro. The sign at the entrance says “1840”, but the building is actually brand new – that date refers to when Muscovites started trading in Trubnaya square. There’s a small delicatessen and fruit and veg market, a couple of coffee shops, and a cider bar. Around 40 different stalls serve dishes from round the world. The market also houses a restaurant, Gorynych , which is devoted to “new Russian” cuisine – traditional food prepared with a modern twist.
Vokrug Sveta
Vokrug Sveta (Around the World) on Nikolskaya St became party central during the FIFA World Cup 2018 as most of the football fans gathered there. As the name suggests, there are stalls with cuisine from all over the world. Head here for Pakistani food, or Canadian poutine – fries with gravy and cheese. This is also a great place to try poke, the Hawaiian seafood and rice dish, which is popular all over Moscow.
Another food market that is a must-see on any foodie’s tour of Moscow is Depo , so far the largest one in Moscow , hosted in a former tram depot. Depo has a smallish farmers market and more than 70 stalls, where one can sample food from around the world.

- The Best Markets In Moscow
The Best Markets For Browsing In Moscow
Quirky curiosities, Soviet memorabilia, artisan crafts and gourmet street food; just a few of the things to buy at Moscow ‘s markets. A legacy of the Soviet era, they are a fantastic snapshot of Russian life and history and spill over with local color. We pick the best for browsing.
Izmailovsky Market
This cornucopia of curiosities brims with fascinating objects and exquisite local craftsmanship. Samovars, gramophones, fur hats, ancient coins, and even a bust of Stalin: the treasure trove that is Izmailovsky Vernisage knows no bounds. The hand-crafted products here are enchanting in the skill and beauty they display. Avoid the hiked-up prices for factory-made products at Moscow’s central souvenir shops and come to Izmailovsky for exquisite creations to meet the masters behind these objects. Venture out of the main Vernisage enclosure to explore the local art and hand-woven carpets on the second-floor wooden balcony. The nearby Izmailovo Kremlin is fascinating in its own right, with its fairground-style imitation of the Kremlin and museums of bread, vodka, and toys.
Danilovsky Market
This farmers’ market is famed for being the place to find organic foodstuffs in Moscow . Danilovsky Market aims to provide the best of Russia’s farm-to-table produce. The meat, cheese, and jams here all hail from the local region, and the wafting scent of freshly baked bread is sure to set your stomach rumbling. Piles of fresh, exotic fruits teeter alongside dried fruits and nuts in rainbow towers. The witty and friendly traders from Russia and central Asia will entertain you with their tricks and dazzle you with their recommendations. The market occurs daily from around 8am to 8pm at 74 Muytnaya Street.
Novopodrezkovo Flea Market
On a busy day, this immense flea market hosts around 4,000 to 6,000 traders. Less well-known than its smaller brother, Izmailovsky, it has remained very much a typically Muscovite haunt and a local favorite. This means that Novopodrezkovo is virtually untainted by hiked-up tourist prices or manufactured souvenirs. For those lucky few foreigners in on the secret of Novopodrezkovo, there are bargains aplenty to be found. However, a visit to Novopodrezkovo is always a gamble: offerings can range from moth-eaten clothes and rusty tools to haute-couture and fabulous antiques. Fight through the hundreds of babushka laying out their Soviet-era wares to find some real treasures. Formerly located in the city center, the market has been moved a little further from the city and is open on weekends. Hop on the train to Novopodrezkovo at Moscow’s Leningradsky railway station or catch bus 370 from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station to find the market by Novopodrezkovo station.
Bloshiny Rynok
For antique fanatics visiting Russia , Bloshiny Rynok is the place to come. Nowhere else in Moscow are there so many pre-Revolutionary items all jumbled together in one fascinating place. Shoes, clothes, and many household items, are gathered here, many of which date back to the early 20th century. Gramophones pump out vintage music to create an authentic atmosphere which makes for a perfect accompaniment to this time traveling expedition that’ll transport you back in history to a world of palaces, balls, carriages, and tsars. Check out the market’s facebook page to find out when the next market will be.
Gorbushka Electronics Market
Towering piles of bargain electronic goods fill this former television factory. An excellent spot to pick up second hand CDs, DVDs, video games, the Gorbushka market also sells electronic goods and household appliances, all at astonishingly low prices. The mind-boggling range of films, albums, and vintage vinyls means that, no matter your taste, you’ll be sure to find something at Gorbushka. The market’s origins lie in the park near the Gorbunov Palace of Culture. The park acted as a meeting ground for film and music enthusiasts who would come and swap records, but its immense popularity and rapid growth meant that the market had to move, eventually settling in a spacious warehouse by Bagrationovskaya metro station.
Sevastopol Hotel
An ethnic paradise, the exotic wares at this market inside the Sevastopol Hotel hail from India , Pakistan , and Afghanistan to name but a few. The wafting aroma of incense will draw you in, while the gleaming objects on show are sure to make you stay. The sorts of treasures available range from Middle Eastern jewelry, to silky hand-woven Oriental materials and expertly crafted toys. The master craftsmanship exhibited in each item is a sight to behold, and at eye-poppingly low prices. The market is best visited during the day-time on weekdays.

Atlanta is the only place in US to see pandas, for now. Here's where you can see them abroad

It will still be months before the San Diego Zoo gets new pandas , the first such bears sent to the United States by China in decades.
For now, the only U.S. zoo left with any is in Atlanta . But globally, there are many places to check out the cuddly black-and-white bundles of fur as they munch on bamboo, climb trees and lounge on their backs.

Atlanta, Georgia
Zoo Atlanta has four pandas, including the first twins born in the United States in more than a quarter century. Giant pandas typically care for only one cub when twins are born in the wild, which usually leads to just one twin surviving.
Ya Lun and Xi Lun and their parents, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, could be heading back to China in late 2024 unless the loan agreement is extended.
Mexico City, Mexico
The only other place in the Americas where people can see pandas is in Mexico City at the Chapultepec Zoo .
Xin Xin is the last panda in Latin America and is not on loan from China. That's because she's the only remaining bear descended from the giant pandas China gifted to foreign countries during the 1970s and 1980s. The second-generation Mexican-born panda traces her lineage to Pe Pe and Ying Ying, who arrived at the zoo in 1975.
One of the last countries that China sent pandas to was Qatar in 2022, ahead of the Middle Eastern country hosting the World Cup.
The pair reside in an indoor enclosure in the desert nation designed to duplicate conditions in the dense forests of China’s mountainous Sichuan province. Eight-hundred kilograms (nearly 1,800 pounds) of fresh bamboo is flown in each week to feed them.
Jing Jing, the male, was given the Arabic name Suhail. Si Hai, the female, was given the Arabic name Thuraya.
Moscow, Russia
In 2019, the Moscow zoo welcomed its first pair of pandas, a male named Ru Yi and a female named Ding Ding. Chinese President Xi Jinping leased the pandas during an official visit that was to show a “sign of respect and trust.”
Berlin, Germany
The Berlin zoo is home to Jiao Qing and Meng Meng, who arrived in Berlin in 2017. They gave birth to twins, the first panda cubs born in Germany. Those cubs have since returned to China.
Giant pandas are limited to six mountainous areas of southwestern China in the provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, and Shanxi. A total of 34 pandas were born last year at two bases in Sichuan, including at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a popular tourist destination in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province.
More than 1,800 are estimated to exist in the wild, where they are threatened chiefly by habitat loss. About 420 others live in captivity in zoos and reserves, the majority within China.
China plans to send San Diego Zoo more pandas this year, reintroducing panda diplomacy

People Are Rescued From Cars Amid Flash Floods in Connecticut

Heavy rainfall in southwestern Connecticut led to mudslides, washed-out roads and flash flooding on Sunday, while thunderstorms sweeping through New York City disrupted flights and train service.
The National Weather Service declared a flash flood emergency or flash flood warning into Sunday evening for parts of Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield and Hartford Counties, as overfilled rivers crested their banks and additional thunderstorms were predicted. Emergency crews carried out widespread water rescues, especially in the Southbury area, and several mudslides were reported, according to the Weather Service .
The New York City area was also getting inundated on Sunday evening, as heavy rains caused all major airports in the region to ground flights. Officials warned of potentially damaging wind gusts. Flash flood warnings were issued in Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and several counties north and west of New York City. Video on social media showed water pouring from the ceiling of Chelsea Market .

There was heavy flooding in Central Park, where the New York Police Department said drivers should avoid the 86th Street Transverse. Parts of Harlem River Drive in Manhattan, Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx and Long Island Expressway in Queens were blocked because of the flooding, the police said .
Amtrak and New Jersey Transit said at about 8:20 p.m. that all trains between New York and Philadelphia were temporarily suspended . By 10:25 p.m., services had been restored but delays continued. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority issued a travel alert on closures along the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway .
The subway was largely unaffected, an M.T.A. spokeswoman said, while the police said there had been no reports of rescues.
At Boston Logan International Airport, flights were experiencing delays of two and a half hours on average, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
In Connecticut, rivers breached roadways in several places in and around Southbury and Newtown, with some images on social media showing cars submerged up to their windshields.
Stephen Schnell, director of emergency management for the town of Southbury, said that the town was under a state of emergency, with police and fire teams dispatched for rescues and many roads closed. There were no reports of injuries or deaths as of early Sunday evening, he said.
The Connecticut Department of Emergency Management warned of a severe risk of flooding around Southbury into the evening and said that a state search-and-rescue task force had been deployed there. Several roads were also closed in the Danbury area.
“Stay alert, listen to local officials, and be safe,” the department urged on social media.
The Housatonic River experienced major flooding — the highest level of flood threat — at the Stevenson Dam in Monroe, Conn., starting around 6 p.m., according to the National Water Prediction Service . It warned of “widespread inundation of low-lying properties from Stevenson south to Bridgeport.” Near the dam, two areas of Route 34 were washed out on Sunday evening.
Brenda Bergeron, deputy commissioner at Connecticut’s Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, said that Stevenson Dam reached major flood stage, but the water was starting to recede late Sunday night.
Ms. Bergeron said fire departments were still actively making rescues, and in Kettletown State Park firefighters rescued groups of campers who were stranded there.
Michael Dyki, a police officer in Oxford, Conn., on the other side of the river from Monroe, said the police could not respond to calls because their cars were underwater and the roads were damaged.
“We are basically trapped in the building,” he said.
Gary Morgatto, owner of Brookside Inn Restaurant in Oxford, Conn., said 18 employees and patrons had to be evacuated by the fire department on Sunday afternoon when the building and parking lot flooded, trapping people inside. Mr. Morgatto said he’s never seen flooding like this in the 70 years his family has owned the restaurant.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” he said. “Within hours it was flooded out.”
Elizabeth Savio, 23, a team manager at Panera Bread in Southbury, said Sunday afternoon that the intersection in front of the shopping center, which includes the store, had completely flooded, and that four cars had become submerged in the floodwaters.
She said that she had watched as a man swam to one of the cars to rescue the driver, and that she had helped the two of them reach Panera. The rescuer, Lucas Barber, then swam back to the car to retrieve the man’s prosthetic leg and his golden retriever.
Mr. Barber, 30, said: “I pulled over, grabbed some rope that’s in the back of my car for emergencies, and threw my phone and wallet on the seat and ran out there.” He said he had checked the other nearby cars to ensure they were empty but had seen that Patrick Jennings, the man he rescued, was still inside his vehicle.
Mr. Jennings called him a “savior.”
“He got me all the way out of the water, the dog comes swimming up and the rest is history,” Mr. Jennings said.
In Newtown, the police department was overwhelmed with calls about non-life-threatening flooding and asked residents to call only in a true emergency, the department posted on Facebook. There were no immediate reports of injuries there.
“We understand that water in your basement is alarming and inconvenient, however, emergency resources are not equipped or staffed to respond to minor basement flooding,” the police department wrote.
Metro-North trains on the Danbury and Waterbury lines were suspended through Monday morning because of flooding through the area, while trains on the New Canaan line were temporarily suspended but later resumed running.
Kyle Pederson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Boston/Norton office, said that southwestern Connecticut was being hit by a weather phenomenon known as a training thunderstorm , or a thunderstorm that keeps reforming over the same area again and again.
While training thunderstorms are common in the summer, he said, rainfall totals as high as these are not: “This amount of precipitation wasn’t expected by anyone today, though we were expecting rain.”
“Generally predicting stuff like this is difficult,” he said, adding that the phenomenon can be very localized, as wind patterns both at the surface and aloft keep the thunderstorm in the same place.
The storm system was unconnected to Hurricane Ernesto , which was far from land but threatening the East Coast with dangerous swells and rip currents, said Jim Connolly, a meteorologist with the Weather Service’s New York office.
