General Information

Mount Rigi

Where Is Mt. Rigi Located?

Lake Lucerne

Mt. Rigi overlooks the northern shore of Lake Lucerne. It is north of Weggis and Vitznau but south of Arth and Kussnacht in central Switzerland. The mountain belongs to the Schwyz Alps mountain massif, but Rigi Kulm is one of the lower summits in the range.

Due to Mt. Rigi’s location in central Switzerland, it is easily accessible by public transport from all the bigger cities nearby. Vitznau is the closest town to the mountain as well as the first station of Rigi’s cogwheel railway, which is the main (but not the only) public transportation to the mountain.

How to Get To Mt. Rigi

Cogwheel train to Mount Rigi

People have been traveling to Mount Rigi since the late 19th century. This majestic mountain is home to Europe’s first cogwheel railway, and over the decades it has become even easier for travelers from all over the world to reach Mount Rigi. Here’s how you can get there from Lucerne and Zurich.

From Lucerne

Chapel Bridge in Lucerne

Traveling to Mount Rigi from Lucerne is simple and you have at least four different options. The most popular route is through Vitznau because it’s the perfect excuse for a boat ride on Lake Lucerne. Boats run between Lucerne and Vitznau, and there are nine connections per day even in the winter season.

The boat ride is about an hour long and the boats dock directly at the bottom station of the Rigi Kulm funicular. From there, it’s about 32 minutes to the top of the mountain, so in total it takes around an hour and a half to travel to Rigi Kulm from Lucerne, via Vitznau .

Traveling via Weggis is the second option. There are 10 boat connections between Lucerne and Weggis even in the winter season, starting at 6:20 AM. The boat ride to Weggis is shorter (about 45 minutes), but the total travel time to Rigi Kulm is still an hour and a half.

Cable car to Mount Rigi

That’s because you need to get from the harbor to the bottom station of the Weggis cable car , which is a 15-minute walk or a 2-minute bus ride. From there, the cable car will take you to Rigi Kaltbad, which is a stop on the Mt. Rigi funicular. Once you board the train, there are only three more stops to the top of the mountain, and the ride should take about 12 minutes.

It’s also possible to travel by train via Arth-Goldau . The ride from Lucerne is non-stop and takes only some 25 minutes. The train station in Goldau is right next to the bottom funicular station, and the ride to the top of the mountains shouldn’t take more than 40 minutes.

From Zurich

best views zurich

You can easily visit Mount Rigi on a day trip even from Zurich. Just take a train from the main station to Arth-Goldau – it takes just 45 minutes if you manage to grab a seat on the trains heading to Milan or Locarno because those only stop in Zug before Arth-Goldau. From there, it’s another 40 minutes to the top of Mount Rigi.

This is not the only way of traveling to Mt Rigi from Zurich, but it is by far the fastest one. You can also travel to Weggis or Vitznau on the other side of the mountain, but that will take much longer. It’s more than an hour from Zurich to Weggis, and you’d have to take a train to Rotkreuz and then board a bus (line 528) to Weggis there.

It’s similar if you want to get to Vitnzau. Ride a train from Zurich to Rotkreuz, where you will board the same bus (line 528) to the Vitznau station.

Mt Rigi Tickets & Prices

Train to Mt. Rigi

The standard price of funicular railway tickets to Mt. Rigi is 49 CHF for a one-way journey and 78 CHF for a return trip. This is the price for train tickets from Weggis, Vitznau, and Goldau, which are the most popular starting points for the journey.

In case you’re traveling from Weggis via cable car and funicular, expect to pay 36 CHF for a one-way ticket for the cable car and 24 CHF for the train ride up to the top of the mountain.

If you want to purchase a return ticket, I highly recommend you just get a day pass for the Mount Rigi Railways . It includes free transport on the cogwheel trains from Vitznau and Goldau, and also the cable car from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad and from Kräbel to Rigi Scheidegg.

Ticket Discounts

Trains in Switzerland are expensive so most people who plan to explore the country by public transport end up getting some sort of travel pass for Switzerland. There are loads of options including the Interrail pass, the Swiss Travel Pass, the Half-fare card, the Tell Pass, the GA Travelcard, and many others.

The good news is that you’ll get a discount for the trip up to Mount Rigi with any of these passes. In fact, the journey will be free with any of these passes except for the half-fare card, which will get you a 50% discount on the tickets.

Children under the age of 15 who are accompanied by adults get to travel on the funicular free of charge, as do dogs.

Additionally, anyone who is staying in towns in the region and is eligible for a visitors card can claim a discount on Mt Rigi Railway tickets. It’s a 20% discount if you have a visitor’s card from Lucerne, Grappen, Vitznau, Weggis, or the Schwyz region.

Travelers who stay at hotels on Mount Rigi get Guest Cards that give them a 50% discount on tickets for the Rigi Railways. Anyone who has a student or apprentice ID and is under the age of 24 can get a 50% discount on the tickets.

Dates of Operation

Mount Rigi funicular operates year-round and closures happen only during maintenance or severe weather. Vitznau has the most connections to Rigi Kulm, with the first departure of the day around 6 AM, and the final descent from the mountain at around 10 PM.

Goldau is the second town with the most connections to Rigi Kulm, starting with trains at approximately 8 AM, and ending with departures from Rigi to Goldau at around 7 PM.

The Weggis cable car to Rigi Kaltbad operates year-round except for two maintenance periods in the spring and autumn. The cable car runs every 30 minutes from 6:30 AM until 11:20 PM, and the cars run continuously when there is a high volume of visitors.

Weather on Mt Rigi

Rigi Kulm above the clouds

Mount Rigi features an elevation of 1,798 meters above sea level, so it’s going to be a bit colder and wetter than the towns and cities at its feet. The period from May to September is the only time when the temperature stays above zero throughout the month. Even in April, the temperatures will drop below zero at night.

The average temperature in the summer is 5-15 degrees Celsius, so even if you visit the mountain in August, you will need warm clothes.

In December and January, temperatures rarely rise above zero even during the day. It’s very cold on the mountain and there’s lots of snowfall, which are pretty good conditions for skiing and snowboarding.

Best Time For A Trip to Mt Rigi

The best time to visit Mount Rigi is either summer or winter, depending on what you like to do. For me, it would have to be summer because I thrive in warm weather and I much prefer exploring when it’s sunny and the flowers are in full bloom.

Summer is also a great season to visit because the days are longer and sunnier, so you can spend more time outside. It’s much easier to explore the hiking trails if there’s light out until at least 8 PM, and there’s less of a chance of fog obstructing the panoramic views.

However, winter is the better season for all of you who enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, and any other winter activities that Switzerland is known for. Many of the trails atop the mountain remain accessible in the winter, and it’s perfectly possible to explore Mout Rigi’s wonderful landscapes. You will need snowshoes for some of the trails, but you can rent those at several locations at Mount Rigi.

Summer Activities on Mt Rigi

Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi is very popular for its countless hiking trails in the summer. If you scroll down a little you’ll see a more detailed list of all the most popular hiking trails in the area, but for now, suffice it to say that there are more than a dozen different trails on the mountain. And that does not include any trails from the towns on the shore of the lake, which can take you all the way to Rigi Kulm.

The trails atop Mount Rigi range from easy and suitable for hiking newbies, to very challenging ones that should be attempted only by the most experienced hikers. There are trails for everyone’s skill level, so you can really have fun on this mountain regardless of how much time you spend hiking in your free time.

Cogwheel Railway

Vitznau

I’ve already mentioned that it’s possible to hike to the top of this mountain from most of the towns on the shore, but not that many people choose to travel to Rigi this way. Most ride the trains, and the cogwheel train from Vitznau is the most popular option.

For one, it’s the fastest way of reaching the summit so it’s best if you don’t want to waste any time in Switzerland. And two, the ride is very scenic and you’ll get to enjoy some spectacular views along the way, as you climb the mountain from the lakefront town of Vitznau. A stunning panoramic view stretches from the top of the mountain, and not only can you see Lucerne, but even the Alps in the background.

Cheese Farm

Cheese Farm in Rigi

One of my favorite things at Rigi Kulm is the cheese farm. The local dairy is also a tavern and a place where you can spend the night, so there’s really no excuse not to visit. You can meet the local herdsman who manages to produce 12 tonnes of cheese every summer, and you can even get to see the cows who provide high-quality milk.

Anyone who visits the dairy can tour the place for a fee of 2 CHF. You can also get a private tour from Franz-Toni Kennel , the herdsman, but that tour must be booked in advance and it has a fee of 50 CHF.

Also, it goes without saying that a trip to the cheese dairy inevitably includes some cheese tastings. Fondue, raclette, and grilled cheese sandwiches are all on the menu, and everything is made with the best locally made cheeses.

Kanzeli Viewpoint

Kanzeli Viewpoint

Kanzeli Viewpoint is an observation deck at Rigi Kaltbad and the perfect destination for all travelers who want to admire the scenic views, but aren’t that into hiking. You don’t have to walk up the mountain for hours to find the perfect scenic spot because this observation deck is just a 15-minute walk from the Rigi Kaltbad Hotel .

The view is surreal, and there’s a detailed map at the observation deck that tells you exactly what you’re seeing. One thing I will say is that there’s no point in going to the observation deck on a foggy or cloudy day – sometimes, the clouds are below you and all you can see is a sea of fluffy clouds.

Lake Lucerne Cruise

lake lucerne cruise

A cruise on Lake Lucerne is something you must do if you’re ever in the area. It’s a fabulous experience, and it can be done in many different ways. You can just book a ticket on the ferry to transport you from the city of Lucerne to Vitznau on your way to Mount Rigi, or you can book a more elaborate cruise with dinner and drinks.

Lake Lucerne cruises are also part of the Gotthard Panorama Express scenic train route. The trains from Lugano and Bellinzona take passengers to Fluelen, where they board a boat to continue their journey to Lucerne. It’s truly a wonderful experience that offers spectacular views of Mount Rigi and other summits.

Winter Activities on Mt Rigi

Winter in Rigi Kulm

If you buy a daily pass for the Rigi Railways, you can go sledding for free. There are five main toboggan runs atop the mountain, and they’re all incredibly fun. One run is easy, one is difficult, and the rest are moderate and suitable for anyone.

The only difficult run is from Rigi Kulm to Staffel to Klösterli , and it’s by far the most popular run down the mountain. It takes about 30 minutes and it’s very thrilling with fast descents and switchbacks. The run from Rigi Burggeist to Gschwänd is the longest of the bunch. It’s 3.8 kilometers which takes about half an hour, and the total descent is 538 meters.

Winter Hiking

Winter hiking in Rigi

Although many of the hiking trails on Mt. Rigi are closed in the winter because of snowfall, around 35 kilometers remain accessible in the colder months. The Rigi Panorama Trail can be done even in the winter, and you can choose from multiple variations of the trail. Easier versions of this hike only cover a section of one kilometer, and the longest route doable in the winter is roughly nine kilometers.

You can also hike from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad, from Rigi to Klosterli, and from Rigi to First. The Kanzeli observation deck is open and accessible even in the winter, for fabulous views of the snow-covered Alps.

Most hiking trails on Mount Rigi that are accessible in the winter can be completed in under an hour, with a few longer routes that take up to two hours.

Scheidegg-Burggeist skiing area

Mount Rigi has five ski lifts and a few more children’s lifts, so it offers some great skiing opportunities. It’s far from being the best ski resort in the region, but the trails are in good condition and exciting enough that you’ll want to get out and spend a couple of hours rushing down the slopes.

The Scheidegg-Burggeist skiing area is popular for the panoramic views that serve as the backdrop of the trail, while the Rigi Staffel skiing area features some of the more challenging trails on the mountain.

It’s important to note that skiing and snowboarding are available free of charge to anyone in possession of the Mount Rigi Day Pass.

Snowshoe Hiking

Snowy Mt. Rigi

Strap on a pair of snowshoes and you’ll be able to explore parts of Mount Rigi that would remain inaccessible otherwise. You’ll be able to walk through the mountain’s snow-covered forests, across meadows, and see all the places on the mountain that remain undiscovered to skiers and hikers.

A snowshoe tour of Rigi Kulm is one of the easier paths you can explore. It takes about an hour and a half to complete the loop trail, and it doesn’t require any special skills or technical knowledge. You’ll most likely be alone on the trail and you’ll have the stunning views all to yourself.

Other popular snowshoe trails on Mount Rigi are the Gratalp trail, the Feissenboden trail, the Rigi Scheidegg trail, and the loop tour of Rigi Burggeist. Snowshoe rental is available at multiple places, including at Rigi Kulm, Rigi Kaltbad, Rigi Scheidegg, and Vitznau.

Cross-Country Skiing

Many of Mount Rigi’s popular summer hiking trails turn into epic cross-country skiing trails in the winter. If you enjoy cross-country skiing, you can have heaps of fun on Mt. Rigi. One of the most popular cross-country skiing trails is the panorama path from Rigi Kaltbad to Rigi Scheidegg.

It takes about two and a half hours to complete the trail, which gets quite steep at the end. The trails follow the route of the old Rigi-Scheidegg railway, and the views along the way are out of this world.

Seebodenalp also offers cross-country skiing. The loop trail starts near the Küssnacht-Seebodenalp cable car and offers stunning views of central Switzerland along the entire route. The terrain is mostly flat, making this the perfect easy route for those who are somewhat new to cross-country skiing.

Spa on Rigi Kaltbad

Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad

Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad is the place to be if your idea of a winter excursion on a mountain includes a sauna and thermal baths. This is a very popular chain of spa centers in Switzerland, with locations in some of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, Rigi Kaltbad included.

The spa center has a warm indoor pool, herbal steam baths, and a heated outdoor pool so you can swim with central Switzerland in the backdrop. The place also offers massages and other cosmetic treatments, so you could easily spend the entire day here getting pampered and relaxing into oblivion.

Best Hiking Trails on Mt Rigi

Mt. Rigi

I promised you a more detailed look into the best hiking trails on Mt Rigi, so here are the top six ones that can be done in up to two hours.

Rigi Panorama Path, Rigi First – Rigi Scheidegg section (2 Hours 10 Mins)

Rigi panorama path

The Rigi Panorama path from Rigi First to Rigi Scheidegg follows the former railway route of the Rigi-Kaltbad-Scheidegg railway. It’s an easy trail with a very small elevation gain, so anyone can attempt this stunning panorama hike and experience the scenic vistas along the way.

Rigi Känzeli Hiking Tour (30 Mins)

Rigi Känzeli Hiking Tour is the perfect trail for non-hikers. It’s a short walk to the Känzeli observation platform from the Rigi Kaltbad station, and it’s just a 15-minute walk in either direction. There’s even a ramp for wheelchair users, so truly anyone can do this short and easy hike.

Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad (1 Hour 10 Mins)

Although you can ride the funicular from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad, it’s much more satisfying to walk down the mountain and explore your surroundings. It’s only about an hour in either direction, and you can follow two distinct paths – descent down the mountain ridges, or follow the funicular railway.

Rigi Staffel to Rigi First (1 Hour 30 Mins)

Views from Rigi Staffel

Rigi Staffel to Rigi First is also known as the Rigi Floral Trail because you can see roughly 200 different species of flowers on the side of the trail if you’re hiking in the spring. This easy hike offers great insight into the flora of Mount Rigi and it’s even suitable for prams and wheelchairs.

Rigi Scheidegg Animal Tracks Trail (20 Mins)

Rigi Scheidegg

The Animal Tracks trail is a short and easy loop hike at the top of Rigi Scheidegg. It takes just 20 minutes to walk the trail, but you’ll want to stay a little bit longer on the trail to see the animals in their natural habitat. The animals most commonly seen on this trail are squirrels, foxes, badgers, and chamois.

Rigi Kulm to Rigi Klosterli (1 Hour 45 Mins)

Rigi Kulm to Rigi Klosterli is one of the longer hikes you can do, but it’s still a pretty easy trail because you’re only going downhill. The trail features stunning views of the surrounding mountains, and you might even experience what it’s like to be above the clouds. Return is possible via the same route or a cable car.

Where to Eat on Mt Rigi

Regina Montium restaurant at Hotel Edelweiss

The majority of restaurants on Mout Rigi are at Rigi Kaltbad, so you should plan to stay in the lower region of the mountain if you want to have options. Rigi Kulm has a few restaurants but the choices aren’t as abundant, and frankly, they aren’t quite as great either.

However, one thing that Kulm has that the Kaltbad doesn’t is the cheese dairy, and I would not shy away from eating most of my meals there. In addition to the dairy, there are Kessiboden and Rigi Bistro close to the top railway station.

Rigi Kaltbad, on the other hand, has a Crêperie that’s a must-visit for anyone who loves chocolate as much as I do. Think crepes stuffed with Nutella, sliced into sushi pieces with whipped cream on the top. They also serve crepes with alcohol, as well as savory crepes that are great for lunch.

All the hotels at Rigi Kaltbad have their own restaurants, and there are a few more locales up the mountain. Gratalp Stübli , Bärenstube , and Heirihütte are some of the best restaurants at Rigi Kaltbad, which serve traditional Swiss cuisine.

Additionally, there are a few restaurants between Rigi Kaltbad and Rigi Kulm. Restaurant Bahnhöfli is at the Rigi Staffel station, and Restaurant Lok 7 is closer to Kaltbad. Both are Swiss restaurants with a menu classic for the region, so lots of cheese and sausage.

Where to Stay on Mt Rigi

Rigi Kulm station and hotel

You’ve got a few different options if you want to spend your entire trip on Mount Rigi and the choice you need to make is whether you want to stay at Rigi Kaltbad or Rigi Kulm. Rigi Kulm is a taller summit with fewer accommodation options. There’s only one hotel and several lodges for hikers, which don’t offer the nicest facilities.

Rigi Kulm Hotel is the best option if you want to be as high up as possible. It’s a decent hotel with 33 rooms and nightly rates that start at 168 CHF for a single room. The average rate for a double room is 250 CHF with a buffet breakfast included.

Rigi Kaltbad is the better destination for most people because there’s more infrastructure. There are several hotels – Rigi Kaltbad Hotel , Hotel Bergsonne Rigi , Restaurant & Hotel Alpina , and Kräuterhotel Edelweiss – as well as a few private apartments and cabins you can rent.

Hotel Alpina is the most affordable option at Rigi Kaltbad, with double rooms starting at 165 CHF per night. The other hotels are approximately 250 CHF per night, but it’s worth noting that Alpina is a 2-star hotel, whereas the rest are 3-star hotels.

Also, keep in mind that if you stay at any one of the hotels on Mount Rigi, you’re entitled to a Guest Card that provides you with a 50% discount for the Rigi Railways.

What to Pack For A Mt Rigi Trip

No matter when you’re visiting Mount Rigi, you should pack a pair of waterproof hiking boots . They’ll allow you to get around the mountain easily regardless of the weather and terrain conditions. If you’re traveling in the winter make sure that your boots are insulated, and for a summer visit just prioritize waterproofing.

Pack t-shirts, long-sleeve tops, warm sweaters, hoodies, jeans, tracksuits, and pretty much any other clothes that you feel comfortable wearing. If you’re going to spend most of your time hiking and exploring, comfort and ease of movement should be your top priorities.

If you’re traveling to Rigi in the winter and you enjoy skiing and snowboarding, don’t forget to pack your ski suit. A heavily insulated jacket will also be necessary for exploring the mountain in cold weather.

For cheese lovers, don’t forget to stop by Alp Chäserenholz cheese dairy, a 20-minute walk from Rigi Kulm.

The Chäserenholz facilities include a cheese shop, a cheese dairy building with a cheese aging cellar, a barn, and an indoor and outdoor restaurant. There’re also Sleep in Straw & Dorm lodging facilities and restrooms.

This farm produces up to 15 different types and 12,000 kg of cheese every summer.

Their daily production starts early in the morning and continues until midday, and you can visit the cheese dairy at 2 CHF (Swiss Franc).

Here, the restaurant offers a variety of delicious cheese dishes, including raclette, fondue, and grilled cheese sandwiches.

  • How to find it: From the top of Mt. Rigi Kulm by the big antenna, you’ll see a Swiss Flag in the south.
  • Opening hours : 9 am to 6 pm
  • Address : Alpwirtschaft Chäserenholz, Kulmweg 19, 6410 Rigi Kulm

Mount Rigi Switzerland.

On my trip to Mt. Rigi, I took the train straight to the summit at Rigi Kulm, then took a short walk up top where the views were.

Then, I strolled down from the summit to the cable car station at Rigi Kaltbad. It took me about 1 hour and was a pleasant walk.

Note : You can shorten the walk by meeting the train at the scenic Staffel stop.

Mountain Railway Trips to Mt. Rigi

Gäste-Service Rigi Bahnhofstrasse 7 6354 Vitznau Phone  +41 (0)41 399 87 87 rigi.ch

With breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views, the Rigi offers a first-class mountain experience whatever the season. The cog railways from Goldau and Vitznau, as well as the cable car from Weggis, enable a variety of round trips, which can also be combined with a boat trip on Lake Lucerne.

As the first mountain railway in Europe, it has been transporting guests comfortably from Vitznau up to the impressive heart of the mountains since 1871. During the 30-minute ascent by cog railway to almost 1,800m above sea level, visitors can enjoy spectacular views over the lake landscape, passing grazing cows, traditional farms and colourful wildflower meadows.

From spring 2022, the historic fleet will be joined by new vehicles. The design of these new trains pays homage to the world’s oldest cog railcar, No. 6, from 1911, which still regularly plies the line between Goldau and Rigi Kulm. The choice of the smart white and bronze colour scheme gives the new carriages a timeless look and forges a link to the service’s origins as the first mountain railway in Europe.

While the current fleet uses the braking energy generated when travelling downhill to heat the carriages, the new trains will feed this power back into their own network as electricity, saving resources for the uphill journey. Rigi Railways are thus taking another big step towards greater sustainability .

This unique railway adventure on the Rigi, combining Europe’s first historic mountain railway and modern train technology, is the only one of its kind in the world.

mount rigi visit

Take a Mt. Rigi excursion to the “Queen of the Mountains” or also referred as the Swiss Family Mountain. It offers spectacular 360˚ views of the surrounding mountains including Mt. Pilatus. Accessible by cogwheel train or cableway, Mt. Rigi boasts views of 13 lakes and lengthy mountain ranges, as the mountain is perfectly located between Lakes Lucerne and Zug. Mt. There is something for everyone at Mt. Rigi. Take a day to go hiking, ride on an aerial cable car, reminisce on a cog-train, enjoy a spa day at the mineral baths in Rigi Kaltbad, or dine at one of the many restaurants. We suggest the “Majestic Round Trip”, great for all ages, which includes travel by boat, cog railway, and train.

The Mount Rigi Panorama trail is an easy wander with some of the best views near Zürich and Lucerne. It’s a great option for tourists and families that want to see classic Swiss landscapes without a difficult hike.

To reach the trail, you ride a cogwheel mountain train to Rigi Kulm at 1798m. Then follow the trail, which winds its merry way along cliffs and around mountains peaks, with spectaculars views in every direction. The trail ends at Rigi Scheidegg, which has a restaurant and big playground and cable car that takes you back down to the valley.

We particularly love this trail because we can do it almost any time of year, during the shoulder seasons and even in winter. Keep reading for the details you need to plan your day on Mount Rigi.

Trail overview

This is a one way trail starting at Rigi Kulm and ending at Rigi Scheidegg. To access the trail, we suggest riding a mountain train up the east side of the mountain to Rigi Kulm.

mount rigi visit

From Rigi Kulm, follow yellow trail signs to the Rigi Staffel station (about 1km), then follow signs toward Rigi First. You can optionally take a short detour to the Rigi Rotstock viewpoint (we always do), then wander down the meadows, merging with the main trail as you approach Rigi First.

At Rigi First, you can optionally fork onto the cliff walk, that is a short path cut into the side of the mountain, with a fenced barrier. After this section, you join a dirt service road which continues the rest of the way to Rigi Scheidegg, where you’ll find a restaurant and playground.

At the end of the hike, you ride a cable car down from Rigi Scheidegg to Kräbel, then a mountain train to the Goldau train station. If you arrive by car, you can park at Kräbel or Goldau, more info below.

Note: If you are doing the Rigi Classic Round Trip from Lucerne (with the boat), you should a shorter version of the Panorama that loops around to the Rigi Kaltbad. This allows you to ride the train or cable car down the west side of the mountain and end up back to the lake. See alternate trail map below .

My trail map version starts at Rigi Kulm and includes the Rotstock viewpoint and cliff walk. The trail took us about 3 hours with our kids, 6 and 10 years old at the time.

mount rigi visit

View interactive trail map on Komoot • SchweizMobil • OutdoorActive

Note:  The official Route 848 Panoramaweg starts at Rigi Kaltbad and follow an obstacle-free path (suitable for wheelchairs) the entire way to Rigi Scheidegg.

Shorter hike

Instead of hiking the full distance, you could hike to other stops on the mountain train line: Rigi Staffel (1 km walking) or Rigi Klösterli (4.2 km, about 90 mins). See trail map .

If you are doing the Classic Round Trip from Lucerne with the boat, you need to end on the west side of the mountain, in Vitznau or Weggis, not Arth Goldau. In this case, you can still do the cliff walk, but you need to loop back to Rigi Kaltbad instead of continuing to Rigi Scheidegg. Here is a suggested hiking map for this version of the hike.

The Rigi mountain train from Goldau to Rigi Kulm is wheelchair accessible. For strollers, they prefer that you fold them and load them into the luggage area. The path at top of Rigi Kulm is obstacle free and partially paved.

The Panorama trail is a wide dirt path and service road possible with an all-terrain stroller, perhaps a wheelchair. However, the 1 km from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Stafel is a bit steep and would require good brakes. Strollers and wheelchairs would need to skip the detour up to Rotstock and stay on the lower path that leads to Rigi First.

You would also need to skip the cliff walk, which is too narrow for strollers or wheelchairs. Instead follow the dirt road that wraps around the mountain between you and the cliff walk. If some of your party want to do the cliff walk, it’s fine to part ways because in a few minutes you’ll meet each other again on the road on the other side.

More info about accessibility on Mt Rigi .

How to get there

Mt- Rigi is located just east of Lucerne and south of Zürich ( see on Google Maps ).

arrow pointing to location of Mt Rigi on map of Switzerland

For this hike, you need to use the Rigi mountain transport from Goldau or Krabel on the east, not Vitznau on the west. This is a one-way hike, so you’ll take the train up to the start of the trail, then hike to Rigi Scheidegg where you’ll take a cable car down Kräbel, where you can catch the mountain train back to Goldau.

With a car, it’s easiest to park at Kräbel at the base of the Kräbel-Scheidegg lift – Chräbelstrasse 44, 6410 Goldau . In 2022, the metered lot cost CHF 8/day – cash or parking app. On weekends, the parking spaces can fill up quickly. If there are no spots, you can park in the Goldau lot at Chräbelstrasse 12, 6410 Arth and catch the mountain train there instead.

At Kräbel, you will catch the mountain train (not the cable car) up to Rigi Kulm . If there is no attendant at the station, you can buy your ticket on the train with cash or card. You hike ends at the top of the cable car than comes down to Kräbel.

With public transportation, take the train to Arth-Goldau , then walk over to the Arth-Goldau Rigi Bahnen station, just a couple minutes away, following the signs. Catch the mountain train here to Rigi Kulm.

At the end of the hike, you will take the Kräbel-Scheidegg cable car down, then catch the mountain train back to Arth-Goldau.

Planning your day

For this trail, you can purchase a Rigi Day Pass, which includes the mountain train up to Rigi Kulm and the cable car down from Rigi Scheidegg. In 2024, the day pass costs CHF 78/adult. Rigi railways are free for children up to age 15 traveling with an adult.

You can get a discount on the Rigi Day Pass with the Swiss Half Fare Card , Eurail, and overnight guests. See current Rigi discounts .

In 2024, the Rigi mountain railways are free with Swiss Travel Pass , Tell Pass, GA, SBB Day Pass, Saver day pass, Municipal one-day travel pass. If you have one of these passes, you do not need to also purchase a Rigi Day Pass.

You can book the Rigi Day Pass below. If you have a discount card, you will need to instead purchase your Rigi Day Pass onsite.

If you are unsure which ticket you should buy, best to ask at the Rigi ticket counter to ensure you purchase the correct ticket.

The Rigi trains are generally open year round and most this trail is also open as a winter walk (excluding the Felsenweg section, you would detour on the road instead). But the Rigi Scheidegg cable car is sometimes closed during the shoulder seasons. So check this webpage to see if the Rigi Scheidegg cable car and Scheidegg-Kaltbad Panoramaweg are open. Probably best between April and November, depending on the weather.

The cog-wheel train runs about once an hour, while the Rigi Scheidegg-Kräbel cable car runs every 30 mins or more frequently when busy. So plan your schedule carefully. But also be flexible. The day we were there, the train came 15 minutes earlier than the posted schedule and we saw more than one an hour go by. I asked the train workers why the train came early and they said “Do you want to go up or not?” I tripled checked the schedule and the clocks. It was early by all accounts; I can’t explain it.

Catch the cog-wheel at Goldau A4 at 10:12 arriving at Rigi Kulm 10:47. Wander around the top for awhile (30 mins). Hike to Rigi Scheidegg (3 hours plus time for breaks). Spend time at the playground and cafe at Rigi Scheidegg (1 hour). Ride down the Rigi Scheidegg-Kräbel cable car at 15:25. Catch the cog-wheel train in Kräbel at 15:36 arriving in Goldau A4 at 15:48.

There are several restaurants along the way. I’d suggest either Chalet Schild at Rigi First, just before you reach the cliff walk ( see on map ). Or Berggasthaus Rigi Scheidegg at the end of the trail, which also has a playground ( see on map ).

For a picnic, there is a picnic area with tables and fire pit near Rotstock ( see on map ). There is another a few minutes walk after the cliff walk, see on map . For supplies, there is a Coop grocery at the Goldau train station or a Coop near the station at Centralstrasse 5, 6410 Arth and Migros at Parkstrasse 25, 6410 Goldau .

Just after the split, there is a Feuerstelle with wood and picnic tables tucked up under the cliff. But keep walking; there’s an even better one in just a few minutes, with a big open view southwest before you walk down to Rigi First. Firewood was stacked on the side of the hut. Even if you’re not building a fire, this is still a nice place to lounge in the grass and catch the view.

To get back on the trail, follow the signs to the Felsenweg, which is part of the Panoramaweg. This Felsenegg, aka cliff walk, is a short segment along the cliffs before it joins back up with the main trail. This section is not open in winter and sometimes closed in bad weather. If this part is closed, simply follow the yellow signs to Rigi Scheidegg, aka “Scheideggweg,” which is a dirt road on the opposite side of the cliffs.

It’s narrower than other parts of the trail, not the best with a stroller.

mount rigi visit

Just the best views ever here.

mount rigi visit

These benches would be a nice place for a picnic lunch but sometimes all the benches are taken.

mount rigi visit

After the Felsenweg, the trail rejoins the dirt road that leads to Rigi Scheidegg.

mount rigi visit

A bit later, you’ll cross this fancy bridge held up with mini eiffel towers.

mount rigi visit

In a few minutes, you’ll pass another Feuerstelle, again with wood and picnic tables. Continue walking on the road towards Scheidegg. If you want to work a bit harder, the trail splits just before the Feuerstelle and goes straight up and over the mountain peak, then rejoins the road to Scheidegg.

mount rigi visit

The road is slightly uphill but not difficult, nice views to the east. We stopped here for lunch one time.

mount rigi visit

As you near Scheidegg, the trail will split again, both directions leading to Rigi Scheidegg. The road to your right stays on a dirt road. If you don’t have a stroller, leave the road and take the split to your left up the mountain. Below my son is walking up that trail from the road. It’s steep and bumpy at first.

mount rigi visit

Here’s the end of the trail at Gersau, just before you reach the Rigi Scheidegg cable car. There are a couple restaurants here and a great playground with a view. There are three trampolines, a slide, climbing stuff, etc.

mount rigi visit

Make sure you walk around behind the playground to get this view north, with Rigi Kulm on the left and Zugersee below.

mount rigi visit

Very often you’ll be above the clouds, enjoy the peaks popping through the fluffiness.

mount rigi visit

When you are ready to go, follow signs to the Rigi Scheidegg cable car, just a couple minutes from the playground. It runs about every 30 minutes (usually xx:00 and xx:30), but check the schedule before you go as it may have a limited schedule on weekdays and off season. The cable car only carries about 10 people, so on busy days, you might need to wait a bit.

mount rigi visit

The cable car drops you off in Kräbel where you’ll need to catch the cogwheel train back to Goldau if you didn’t park in Kräbel. That train runs once an hour so try to coordinate before riding down. There’s nothing to do in Kräbel while you wait but enjoy the view.

Can I take my dog on the Rigi mountain railways?

Yes, dog are allowed on all Rigi mountain railways and are free of charge. Learn more about Rigi rules for dogs .

Can I ride my bike on the Rigi panorama trail?

No. Bikes cannot be transported on most of the Rigi mountain railways (see bike rules here ). There is a mountain bike tour on Rigi , but it does not include the panorama trail.

This article is VERY DECEIVING regarding the tickets. “For this trail, you need a DAY PASS for the Rigi mountain railways.” and so I went ahead and got the day pass even though I have half fare Travel Card. This article provides link to get the day pass right after they mention that you need a day pass. Indeed, under the link they mention you can use your SBB Day Pass too but it was too late for me as the article gave me the impression that I NEED the DAY PASS. So I ended up losing half of the money. I will go to customer service in train station to see if I can get any refund for this. SWISSFAMILYFUN I suggest you correct your wording regarding the tickets so that people don’t fall into this trap.

I’m sorry that you misunderstood my instructions regarding the tickets. To do the Rigi panorama trail, you need a Rigi Day Pass to cover the mountain railways (mountain train and cable car). Or you could use a SBB Day Pass, which Rigi currently accepts as a valid ticket for their mountain railways. You can use your SBB Half Fare Card to get a discount on either a Rigi Day Pass or SBB Day Pass. I’m not sure which day pass you purchased and why you didn’t use your SBB Half Fare card to get a discount on that ticket. I will try to reword my instructions to make this more clear.

Hi, I’m writing to you from Israel, and my family and I are excited about our upcoming trip to Switzerland in October. We wanted to let you know that we absolutely adore your website and have found it to be extremely helpful in planning our vacation.

I do have a question regarding Mount Rigi. Our plan is to park our car in Weggis and take the lift and cogwheel train up to Rigi Kulm. From there, we intend to hike the classic Rigi trail to Rigi Kaltbad and then descend to Vitznau. Finally, we’ll make our way back to Weggis to retrieve our car. I was wondering if it is possible to combine the classic trail with the cliff walk? Additionally, could you kindly provide information on the location of the cliff walk?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi David, sounds like a good plan. You can do the cliff walk, then just walk back to Rigi Kaltbad for the cogwheel train down to Vitznau, instead of continuing to Rigi Scheidegg. I have updated the post to include a hiking map for this version. You can also see it here: https://www.komoot.com/tour/559084849?ref=wtd

Hi Tanya, We are planning to take the railway from Vitznau to Rigi Hulm, do the hike to Rigi Scheidegg, take the cable car to Krabel and the train from Krabel to Arth Goldau. Will the Rigi railway day pass cover each of these legs? Thank you.

Yes, the Rigi day pass covers all of these. Have fun!

Thank you so much for all this information! A friend and I (both college students from the U.S.) recently visited Zurich and Geneva, and your website was a LIFESAVER while researching hikes. The Rigi Panorama trail was beautiful in late May (and students get 50% off on the Rigi day pass! Just ask when buying the tickets at the Arth-Goldau Rigi Bahnen station).

Hello, I am planning to do this trial on 10 Nov 2023, but I saw that the aerial cable car from Rigi Scheidegg to Krabel is closed during the period: https://www.rigi.ch/_Resources/Persistent/436a6c5a7603d0e51351443e0f5f5a31542c9bbd/Timetable%20Aerial%20cable%20car%20Kr%C3%A4bel%20-%20Rigi%20Scheidegg%20%20from%2011.12.2022.pdf

Are there alternative way to get down from Rigi Scheidegg?

You could hypothetically hike down, but it would be a very long way down. If the cable car is closed, I suggest doing an amended version of the trail shown in this trail map. https://www.komoot.com/tour/559084849?ref=wtd If there is early snow, it’s possible the cliff walk portion of the trail will be closed during the time you visit.

Hi Tanya Thank you very much for your detailed update. One last question. We may decide to take the boat back to Luzern after the cable car ride from Rigi Kaltbad. Is there a bus to take from the cable car station to the ferry dock? If yes, what is the bus number? If no, how long is the walk from cable car station to the ferry dock? Thanks!

You can ride bus 502 from the cable car station to Weggis, Dorfplatz stop, then a short walk to the the boat dock. Or you can walk instead, about 15 mins walk. You can see a map of this walk in my other Rigi post: https://swissfamilyfun.com/rigi-round-trip/#Return_trip_8211_Rigi_Kaltbad-First_to_Weggis_to_Lucerne I hope this helps. Have fun!

We are from Malaysia and planning to include in our itinerary to visit Rigi Klum with our Swiss Travel Pass from Luzern in mid June 2023. We plan to take your recommendation for the Classic Round Trip. 🙂 We have some questions: (1) Is the cable car at Rigi Kaltbad (if yes, am i correct if we take the cogwheel train from Rigi Klum to Rigi Kaltbad) (2) we are planning to arrive at Rigi Kaltbad at 1415. We understand the cable car runs every half hour but couldnt find the timing for the cable car. (3) Upon arriving at Weggis, we are planning to take the bus/train at 3pm back to Luzern. Should we take the bus at Weggis Dorfplatz or Weggis Schiffstation? How long is the walk from the cable car station to bus stop and what is the bus number to take? (4) Is the Swiss Travel Pass covers the Classic Round Trip? Looking forward to your reply soon. Thank you very much.

Hi. 1/2) Yes, the cable car is at Rigi Kaltbad. You can see the timetables here: https://www.rigi.ch/en/inform/timetables It runs every 30 mins from 8:10 to 19:10. Yes, you can take the train from Rigi Kulm down to Rigi Kaltbad. 3) It looks like you can catch bus directly at the cable car station “Weggis, Seilbahn.” It’s bus 502. You could also walk into town and catch the bus at Weggis, Dorfplatz instead (about a 10 min walk from the cable car station). You can check the current bus schedule on https://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html 4) Yes, according to the Rigi website in 2023, the Swiss Travel Pass includes the boat to Rigi and all mountain transport on Rigi. Have fun!

Hi Tanya, Thank you for the detailed information. I use mainly your website for hikes and walks in Switzerland. I fund Always really helpful tips and great ideas. I have a question for this hike, can we do it the other way around, e.g. from Rigi Scheidegg to Rigi Kulm? Do you see any constrains?

Thanks Marta

Yes, you can definitely hike the opposite direction. You’ll just have more uphill walking that direction. Have fun!

Hi. im checking about the Panoramaweg trail. I was planning all the way up by the cogwheel to Rigi Kulm departing from Vitznau. Then i do the trail as explained above. Is it possible pls? thanks

Yes, you can take the cogwheel train from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm to start the hike. However, the full panorama trail ends at Rigi Scheidegg. You cannot get from Rigi Scheidegg directly back to Vitznau. From Rigi Scheidegg, you take take a cable car down to Arth Goldau and train back to Lucerne. If you want to get back to the cogwheel train that goes to Vitznau, you can alter the panorama trail by walking to Rigi First, optionally doing the cliff walk, then walking back to Rigi Kaltbad where you can catch the cogwheel train back to Vitznau. Hope this helps.

I forgot to write why I am talking about TWINT. The daily ticket now is 12 CHF, min. payment is 5 CHF for 2 hours and 1 CHF for every additional hour. We were 2 with a stroller and paid 9 CHF and made it only so so while spending only minimum time for lunch.

Wonderful route for a family 2+3. My 8, 5 & 2-year-olds enjoyed it. Thank you for posting.

Rigi Scheidegg is empty in the afternoon – remember to watch out for the timetable. We were lucky to take the last cable car down.

We needed to eat something in Goldau and can highly recommend Fratelli d’Italia – feels like Italy and is inexpensive.

Thanks for the feedback and tip about the restaurant. I agree that it’s vital to check the cable car closing times when planning your day. Missing the last one down is terrible.

Hi! Thank you for this very precise and useful post. I plan to do this trail next month. I have one question: why it is best to ride up the mountain train from Arth Goldau? Since the trail starts at Rigi Kulm, why does it matter how you got there? Any thoughts appreciated. Many thanks.

It only matters if you came by car and want to end your day at the car. If you are coming by public transportation, it doesn’t matter so much.

Your blog/website is perfection!! The info is gold and I really appreciate the maps. This has made planning our Switzerland trip so much easier.

So glad you’ve found our website helpful. So nice of you to leave this message for me.

I’ve been using your website to plan our upcoming Switzerland trip, and your website has been an amazing resource. I am wondering if we can combine the Mt Rigi Panorama hike (or part of it) with a boat trip on Lucerne? It looks like we could ride the boat from Lucerne to Viznau and then take the cable car to Rigi Kulm to start the hike, or is that not possible? Thank you!

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I do think you can combine this trip with a boat ride. The boat schedule in winter is less frequent, so make sure to check the current schedule carefully. Also you’ll need to end your winter hike at Kaltbad so you can ride back down to the ferry dock.

Is the hike ok for people slightly scared of heights? are there extreme cliffs off the walking path? thanks!

There’s only a short section that has cliffs and there is a barrier. It’s one of the safest cliff walks I’ve done. If it makes you nervous, you can skip that part and just walk around the other side of the mountain.

Fantastic hike. We did the Panorama trail today with 3 kids in tow – 7/9/11. Packed brats and marshmallows and took a lunch break soaking in the million dollar views. Absolutely stunning on a clear day like we had in May. Your information was spot on and many thanks to you!

Sounds like a great day! Glad we could help you. Wishing you many more fun adventures this summer.

What was the total distance of this hike?

Thanks for asking. I updated the map so this is more clear. The full trail from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Scheidegg is 8.2 km, about 2hr45 walking time. I also included a shorter 4.2 km version that ends at Rigi Klösterei, about 1h30 walking time. I hope this helps.

This is great! Very informative! You mentioned that the cost is about 63 CHF, does this include the cog-wheel train from Goldau up to Kulm?

Yes. The Rigi website is a little coy about posting their prices, mostly showing packaged prices instead of individual fares. The Mt Rigi Railways Day Ticket covers all the mountain transport needed for this hike. Summer 2019 it costs CHF72 full price, discounts for various Swiss travel cards like half-fare and (details on their website). Just FYI, for this hike, You need a one-way ticket from Goldau to Rigi Kulm on the mountain train. Then you need a one-way ticket on the cable car from Rigi Scheidegg to Kräbel, then a one-way ticket on the mountain train from Kräbel to Goldau. I need to update this post with more details about the tickets.

We arrived in Zurich this afternoon and are interested in doing this hike in a couple of days. Is the price mentioned for the railway tickets or is there a fee to hike? Any information would be helpful so we can best prepare.

Thank you, Lydia & Jake

There is no fee for hiking, just for the mountain transport. This is the case in most of Switzerland. Hope you have fun!

In winter, you can take a sleigh up an go all the way from Kulm down to Klösterli. The rest of the trail is quite exhausting though with smaller children (ours are 4 and 7) so we ended up taking the train down to Kräbel and just making a short trip up to Scheidegg from there.

Thanks! We did this hike today and agree the Felsenegg part was the best!

I would just add from our experience that it was windy so we got really lucky to be able to ride the cable car down. They could have closed it if they thought it was too windy, and we would have had to walk back a bit to part of the Rigi train. The train also seemed to have limited pram space. I guess a lot of folks were taking advantage of the 2 for 1 SBB TICKETS

All-in-all, we really enjoyed the views!

We did part of this route and colored the flower walk, came across the most spectacular firepit with 180 degree views of lake Lucerne then walked via to go kaltbad to klosterli (spent 10-6 on the mountain including train from Goldau a4). Thanks for the tips!! Helped immensely

Wow, sounds like a great day! Glad I could help you with the planning.

View over Lake Lucerne from Pilatus Kulm

Mt. Titlis, Mt. Pilatus or Mt. Rigi – Which makes the best day trip from Lucerne?

With their spectacular setting between the serene waters of Lake Lucerne and the snowy peaks of the Alps, the mountains make for an attractive day trip from the colourful medieval streets of Lucerne .

However, many travellers find it difficult to choose between Mount Titlis, Mount Pilatus , and Mount Rigi and whilst they all make wonderful Lucerne day trips, most folks only have time to visit one.

In this guide, we compare the three most popular day trips from Lucerne, so you can decide which is the best for you.

Rest assured – no matter which of the Lucerne mountains you choose to visit, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps (weather permitting!).

Titlis Rotair cable car

First ascended in 1739, Mount Titlis lies to the south of Lake Lucerne and is often visited as an alternative to the Jungfrau. It is the highest peak in Switzerland’s Uri Alps north of the Susten Pass, rising to 3,238 metres above sea level.

It is also home to the world’s first rotating cable car, known as the Titlis Rotair , which offers dazzling panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

At the top station, an illuminated tunnel carved through the ancient blue ice of the glacier leads to the Glacier Cave, while for the more actively-minded, there are various hiking trails that start at the end at the Trübsee cable car station.

If that’s not enough, the Titlis Cliff Walk boasts the highest suspension bridge in Europe.

During the summer months, it’s possible to rent a row boat and explore Trübsee lake at a relaxed pace, or zoom across the sky attached to the Trübsee Flyer zipline.

Opting to make the journey from Lucerne to Mount Titlis also gives visitors the chance to get a bird’s eye view of the mountain’s glacier – the region’s only accessible glacier – from the Ice Flyer chairlift.

Operating over both the summer and winter months, when it doubles as a ski lift for the ski run, the Ice Flyer Titlis provides a unique means of getting to the mountain’s free, child-friendly snow tubing and sledging run.

When it comes to warming up, there are a number of cafes and restaurants dotted about the mountain, generally around the cable car stations, which offer hot drinks, snacks, and traditional Swiss mountain cuisine.

Panorama gondola from Kriens to Fräkmüntegg on Mt. Pilatus

Mount Pilatus, or Monte Pilatus, is a mountain massif consisting of several individual peaks that is easily-identifiable from its position overlooking Lucerne. Its highest peak is Tomlishorn, which rises to a height of 2,128 metres above sea level.

One of the main activities to enjoy while taking in the incredible views is hiking.

There are some 20 different routes, ranging from easy trails lasting an hour and a half to those rated difficult, which shouldn’t be tackled without the appropriate equipment and experience and can take six hours to complete.

Winter sees many of the hiking trails closed, however, there are still plenty of activities on offer on the mountain, including skiing, tobogganing, and sledging.

Mount Pilatus also has the longest summer toboggan run at Fräkmüntegg, while Pilatus Rope Park has all manner of ropeways to clamber up and across.

  • Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm or vice versa – cogwheel train

With an average gradient of 35% and a maximum gradient of 48%, the railway holds the record for being the world’s steepest cogwheel railway line.

Alpnachstad can be reached from Lucerne via the lake’s steamer services, giving you the chance to enjoy a Lake Lucerne cruise, or by trains on Zentralbahn’s Brünigbahn line.

The Pilatus Railway operates from May to November, weather permitting.

Getting from Lucerne to Mt Pilatus outside of these months is still possible, however, thanks to the cable cars running from Kriens (which can be reached by bus number 1 from Lucerne) that take passengers to the summit.

Cogwheel train ascending Mt. Rigi with a view down to Lake Lucerne

Sometimes known as ‘the Queen of the mountains’ (Rigi comes from Regina, the Latin word for queen), Mount Rigi is another mountain massif.

It is surrounded by lakes Lucerne, Zug, and Lauerz, and on a clear day, it’s possible to see seven different bodies of water from the top.

The summit, Rigi Kulm , lies 1,798 metres above sea level, in the Schwyzer Alps, due east of Lucerne across the lake.

The mountain claims ownership of not only the oldest mountain railway in Europe, but also the highest standard gauge lines on the continent – the Rigi Railways.

Like Mounts Titlis and Pilatus, Rigi is a popular site for hiking in summer with skiing and tobogganing possible in winter.

Mt. Rigi boasts a hiking area of 90 square kilometres, covering some 120 kilometres of marked trails, which offer various viewpoints with expansive vistas across the region.

The Classic Trail remains popular and leads from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad (where you can relax with a hot drink or ice cream, depending on the time of year and prevailing weather conditions) via Staffel.

At just four kilometres in length, with a difference in altitude of only 300 metres and well-maintained paths leading down, it’s a great route for families looking to get a sense of the mountain.

Rigi Bahn

How to get to Mt. Rigi from Lucerne

Classic Rigi Round Trip:

  • Lucerne to Vitznau – boat or train
  • Vitznau to Rigi Kulm – cogwheel train
  • Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad – cogwheel train
  • Rigi Kaltbad to Weggis – cable car
  • Weggis to Lucerne – boat or train

There are a couple of different ways to travel from Lucerne to Mt. Rigi. You can travel either via Vitznau, Arth-Goldau or Weggis.

The first option is to take a train and bus, or boat, to Vitznau which takes about an hour. Services operate year round. You can then board the Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn rack railway to Rigi Kulm (via Rigi Kaltbad).

The second option entails catching a train from Lucerne to Weggis, a gondola lift from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad, a resort town at 1,400 metres, and then a cable car for the final leg to Rigi Kulm.

Combining route options one and two above results in what is commonly known as the Classic Rigi Round Trip .

The third option is to get to Arth-Goldau which can be reached by train in around 35 minutes from Lucerne. From there the Arth-Rigi-Bahn rack railway transports passengers to Krabel where they join a cable car to travel on to Rigi Kulm.

The Weggis cableway is closed for a short period in November and then again in March/April. Click here for closure dates.

Mt Rigi ticket prices depend on the route you choose to travel. To save time queuing for tickets at the station, you can buy your train tickets here .

Preparing yourself for the mountains

As each of these mountain peaks lies high above the snowline, and often above the cloud-line, you should not expect that the weather in Lucerne to be indicative of that on the mountains themselves.

While you should prepare for low temperatures, it can get warm on the peaks, particularly in summer, so the best option is to dress in easily added or removable layers.

Gloves, sunglasses, and a warm hat shouldn’t be forgotten, alongside sturdy, closed shoes.

Keep a close eye on the Mount Rigi, Mount Titlis, or Mount Pilatus weather before considering any trip into the mountains.

Many hotels in Lucerne, as well as the Tourist Office, have webcams showing live video from the mountain summits.

A winter trip to Mount Rigi

Anthony

When visiting Luzern, a trip to a mountain can not be missing from your itinerary. Many tourists that have a tight schedule opt for a visit to Mount Pilatus. That makes sense, as Pilatus is very close to Luzern and convenient to get to. However, if you have some more time on your hands when visiting Luzern, I recommend considering visiting Mount Rigi. Rigi – dubbed the queen of mountains – is a lovely destination both during the summer and for a winter trip. Let me explain why!

The perfect mountain for activities

While Pilatus does offer various activities like sleighing and an adventure course, Rigi to me feels more like ‘being in the great outdoors’. There a plenty of hiking trails on the mountains that can be explored winter and summer. There are even some wintersport slopes that you can use when snow conditions allow!

Additionally, Rigi for some reason feels more ‘genuine’. There are many small villages on the mountain that are permanently inhabited, which means you will find quaint houses along your trail.

Mount Rigi Winter

Part of the public transport network

Maybe one of the best things about Mount Rigi, is that most of its lifts and trains are part of the Swiss public transport network. This means that if you have a Swiss travel pass, GA or day pass, you can explore most of the mountain free of charge! This is truly amazing, as cable cars in Switzerland normally get pricy very quickly. Not at Rigi, if you already happen to have one of the above public transport tickets! If you do not have any of the tickets above, a day ticket for Rigi Bahnen (who operates the trains, Luftseilbahn Weggis and Luftseilbahn Kräbel) costs CHF 72. Holders of the half-fare card pay CHF 36 for a day card. Planning on exploring the day for several consecutive days? Rigi offers multiple day tickets with great discounts. Check out their website for details on this offer.

Combine it with a lake cruise

My favorite way of exploring Mount Rigi, is by combining a trip there with a cruise on the Vierwaldstättersee lake. From Luzern, you can take a cruise to either Weggis or Vitznau to travel up the mountain. From Weggis you take the cablecar (Luftseilbahn) to Rigi Kaltbad, from Vitznau you can take the mountain train all the way to the Rigi Summit (Rigi Kulm). It is a great way to combine different modes of transport and see the mountain from different perspectives on the same day. If you have the Swiss travel pass, a day pass or the GA (Generalabonnement), boat trips on the Vierwaldstättersee are free of charge.

Rigi Kaltbad – the main hub on Mount Rigi

If you are travelling up Mount Rigi from either Vitznau or Weggis, you can consider Rigi Kaltbad as your first ‘major stop’ on the way to the Summit. Rigi Kaltbad is a small village with plenty of reasons to spend some time here. There is a playground with the most amazing view , a little chapel so visit, a small supermarket, hotels and some restaurants. There even is a very popular spa resort with the same name that you can visit! Rigi Kaltbad sits at an altitude of about 1400 meters, guaranteeing amazing panoramas over the lake and the surrounding mountains on clear days. Take some time here, or continue upwards to the summit of Rigi!

Be well prepared

As with any mountains, the weather on top of Mount Rigi can suddenly change. It is important to be prepared for weather changes when planning a trip to a mountaineous. Also, alway check the weather forecast prior to heading out to the mountains. Rigi has a number of live webcam streams that you can use to check out the current weather conditions. This limits the chances of unwelcome surprises in the form of fog, heavy snow or thunderstorms! (neither of those are going to make your Rigi trip particularly enjoyable)

Mount Rigi

Rigi Kulm – the summit

The top of Rigi is called Rigi Kulm. Here, a big antenna towers high over the surrounding flatlands and lakes. The only way to get to Rigi Kulm is by taking the Rigi Bahnen cogwheel train either from Art-Goldau or Vitznau. (The Vitznau line has a stop at the Rigi Kaltbad station) The view from Rigi Kulm is amazing on clear days. You can see Zürich in the north, the majestic alps towards the south and the Jura mountains in the distances towards the west. During the winter, Rigi Summit will have snow most of the time. The top of Rigi measures 1797 meters above sea level. Yes, indeed a bit less tall than Pilatus on the other side of the lake! On top of Rigi, you can have a meal at the Rigi Kulm Hotel or on of the small chalets in the vicnity, or simply sit and enjoy the views. There is a panorama deck next to the Rigi Kulm Hotel, and you can (partially) climb the antenna on the top for an even higher viewpoint. Had enough of the high altitudes? There are different walking trails down the mountain that I really recommend. Do make sure you wear proper shoes, at the snow can be very slippery. More of a daredevil? There are sledding routes down Rigi Kulm where you pick up quite some speed! You can either bring your own sledge, or rent on in Rigi Kaltbad or at the top. As with (almost) everything on mount Rigi – the sledding activities (excluding rental) are included in the Rigi day pass or any of the other above mentioned passes!

Go and explore nature!

I personally truly love Rigi for how versatile this mountain is. You simply go up for a nice view, treat yourself to a spa day or be out in the nature all day – it is all possible. If you do decide to go for a hike, make sure to check out the trails in advance and grab a map in the train on your way up. Last time I visited Rigi was in early February 2023, when the sun was shining over a snow-covered Rigi. Me and my colleagues made a trip to the top with the Weggis Seihlbahn and the cogwheel train, and then hiked down for about an hour to Rigi Klösterli. Here, we had a nice lunch in a small local mountain chalet , after which we took the train down to Art-Goldau. Especially the colleagues that were visiting us from Amsterdam truly had the time of their life on Rigi!

Rigi – Year-round fun

So to summarize the recommendations in this article: Rigi is worth a visit year-round. During the winter especially, it offers beautiful views over the alps while being very accessible. Also, Rigi gives you the opportunity to get away from the ‘touristy side’ of Switzerland that places like Jungfraujoch (and partially Pilatus) give. Put on those hiking shoes, pack the sledge and explore the queen of the mountains! For more information about timetables, prices and activities, check out Rigi.ch .

On the other hand, Mount Rigi is known for its natural beauty and tranquility. It can serve as the perfect getaway for those seeking peace and quiet. The Rigi railway and cable car rides are a central part of the experience.

How to get to Mt. Rigi from Lucerne?

Our experience hiking Rigi Panormaweg

In this article, we share our experience hiking Rigi Panoramaweg (Rigi Panorama trail in English). The Rigi Panoramaweg is an easy hike and great for beginners as well as advanced hikers who want to get back in shape before the summer season. Hiking Rigi Felsenweg is included on this hike, as the Rigi Felsenweg is a specially beautiful leg of the Rigi Panoramaweg. The original Rigi Panoramaweg starts in Rigi Kaltbad and ends at Rigi Scheidegg (2h). We add a little tweak to it and start on Rigi Kulm instead of Rigi Kaltbad / First so you will get all the views from Mount Rigi (2:35h). For advanced hikers, we will add an extra challenge down the road: the climb of Dosse (+1h). Let’s do it!

Take the Mount Rigi railways to Rigi Kulm from Vitznau or Arth-Goldau

We boarded the “first cable car in Europe” – the Mount Rigi r ailways- in Arth-Goldau. If you are traveling by boat from Lucerne, take the cable car from Vitznau instead. Either way, you will reach Rigi Kulm (1797m). Walk to the very top to enjoy the incredible views of the Swiss Alps and Lake Lucerne. It almost seems like Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau brought their friends along to greet Mount Rigi, the Queen of the mountains. Check out an interactive virtual view from Rigi Kulm here and have a look at this webcam here . Many tourists heard about the views on Mount Rigi, too. Come early or stay late to watch an incredible sunset over the Swiss Alps from Mount Rigi.

Hiking Rigi Panoramaweg from Rigi Kulm to Rigi First instead of Rigi Kaltbad

From Rigi Kulm, we took the small paved road to Rigi Staffel. On the way, a first alpine hut offers delicious Mount Rigi alp cheese. As we had just started the hike we closed our eyes to avoid any temptation – and walked by. At Rigi Staffel, we crossed the train tracks and followed the path in the left direction to Rigi First. The trail took us over a beautiful green alp to Rigi First. On the greens, cows were lingering and enjoying the stunning views of Lake Lucerne.

Hiking Rigi Felsenweg: Benches invite you to linger, breathe in, and enjoy the scenery

At Rigi First, we hit the Rigi Panoramaweg that officially starts at Rigi Kaltbad. It starts with a highlight, the Rigi Felsenweg (English: cliff trail). Closed in winter, the Rigi Felsenweg offers incredible views of Mount Bürgenstock, Mount Pilatus, and Mount Stanserhorn. Benches invite you to linger, breathe in, and enjoy the scenery. We took some time to relax, gazed over Lake Lucerne, and filled our smartphones with tons of pictures. After the break, we rejoined the broad path of the former Rigi-Kaltbad-Scheidegg railway that once connected Rigi Kaltbad to Rigi Scheidegg (1874 – 1931). We passed an old train wagon and 15 minutes later we reached the old railway bridge in Unterstetten.

Hiking Rigi Felsenweg offers great views to Bürgenstock, Switzerland. In the background mount Pilatus on the right and Stanserhorn are visible.

Decision-making at the old railway bridge in Rigi Unterstetten on Rigi Panoramaweg

Hikers of the world, make up your mind! It’s decision-making time at the old railway bridge in Unterstetten. Gourmet hikers, families with small children, and beginners should definitely turn left and continue the hike on the Mount Rigi Panorama trail. Advanced hikers who are looking for a challenge, climb uphill to Dosse instead to burn some extra calories. As we spoiled ourselves in Kräuterhotel Edelweiss the night before, we went for the climb.

Solène standing on Dosse, Rigi, Switzerland. Behind her views of the Swiss Alps.

Mount Dosse on Mount Rigi: 360° panorama of the Swiss Alps

The summit of Dosse is the second-highest point of this hike. From here you have an incredible 360° panoramic view of the Swiss Alps without the crowds. We sat on a bench, soaked in the view, and took a nap. If you want to get an impression of the views, check out our video at the top of this article. After the break, we followed the less steep path downhill and found ourselves back on the hiking trail of the former railroad track.

Arrival on Rigi Scheidegg and cable car down to Kräbel

From there Mount Rigi Panoramaweg will take you about 30 minutes to reach Rigi Scheidegg. Once there we sat down in the Berggasthaus Rigi Scheidegg for a good Röschti. To refill the calorie deficit from climbing Mount Dosse we ordered a meringue with whipped cream for dessert. Yummy! At the end of a great day, we took the cable car down to Kräbel . At Kräbel we waited for the Mount Rigi railways once again and arrived tired but happy in Arth-Goldau from where we took the train back to Zurich.

Hike&Dine: Dine at Kräuterhotel Edelweiss on Mount Rigi

“Mount Rigi does not only offer splendid views but also delicious fine dining options. Stay a night on Mount Rigi and dine at Hotel Edelweiss to enjoy a 9-course fine dining menu with herbs from Mount Rigi.”

Prepare your trip to Rigi Panoramaweg

Get to Mount Rigi Kulm by train and cable car from anywhere in Switzerland. Look up trains and cable cars directly on the site of the Swiss National Railway (SBB) by typing in the starting point and Kleine Scheidegg as the destination. For a more scenic trip take the boat from Lucerne to Vitznau . You can also buy tickets to Mount Rigi here: Day Pass for Mount Rigi , Round Trip Ticket for Mount Rigi , Rigi Kaltbad Spa admission mineral bath incl. day ticket Rigi cable car , from Lucerne: Rigi round trip incl. boat and train , from Zurich: Day trip to the Rigi . Tip: GA and Half-fare cards are valid. The official Rigi Panoramaweg starts in Rigi Kaltbad and ends in Rigi Scheidegg. We highly recommend you start on Rigi Kulm instead, so you get all the views. As always, this hike can be done in the other direction, from Rigi Scheidegg to Rigi Kulm. To do that, take the train in Arth-Goldau and get out at Kräbel where you take the cable car to Rigi Scheidegg. Get all the information on pricing and schedules on the official site of the Mount Rigi railways. Check out this interactive map of Mount Rigi where you can access webcams to check the weather and see the status of the Mount Rigi railways and cable cars. Hiking in the mountains is not a walk in the park. Familiarise yourself with the tips on this site (German / French / Italian). Our restaurant picks include Berggasthaus Rigi Scheidegg, Chäserenholz, and Kräuterhotel Edelweiss .

Visitors stand on the Stanserhorn's viewing platform, which extends over a stunning vista of mountain ranges and valleys

Affectionately dubbed the “Queen of the Mountains”, Mount Rigi is a slice of paradise sitting at 1798m with panoramic views across endless mountains and lakes.

The best thing about Rigi (aside from insane views) is the accessibility, it’s one of the easiest day trips from Lucerne and you get a fantastic experience and epic photos without taking too much time and money.

Highlights from Mount Rigi

  • Unmatched views: The summit of Rigi delivers breathtaking 360-degree views over 13 lakes (including Lucerne, Zug and Lauerz) and countless Swiss Alps peaks
  • Historical railway journey: The Rigi Railway was the first mountain railway in Europe, making its first journey to Rigi Kulm wayyyy back in 1871
  • Hikes for everyone: If you want to hit the hiking paths, Rigi is home to more than 120km of trails for various levels of adventure
  • Wellness with a view: Rest your body and mind with a visit to the mineral baths at Rigi Kaltbad

How to get to Mount Rigi from Lucerne

The journey to Rigi is almost as epic as the destination, and there are a few options to get up and down. Combine two options to be able to tick off two different experiences.

Boat + cogwheel train: Catch a stunningly scenic boat ride across Lake Lucerne to reach Vitznau, where you’ll switch to the cogwheel train that travels up to Rigi Kulm in just under an hour. The views are insane, sit on the left side for jaw-dropping views.

Train + cogwheel train: Catch a regional train to Arth-Goldau, then switch onto a different cogwheel railway to reach Rigi Kulm (sit on the right-hand side facing uphill for this one).

Boat + cable car: Catch a boat from Lucerne to Weggis, then switch to the Weggis-Rigi Kaltbad cable car. From here you can walk to Rigi Kulm if you’re up for a short but steep hike, or catch a train the final leg to the summit.

I prefer the boat to Vitznau and then Vitznau-Rigi cogwheel if you wanted to just choose one and return the same way. It’s about 1h 30m-1h 40m between Lucerne and Rigi no matter which way you choose.

Mount Pilatus

Shrouded in myths and legends, Mount Pilatus rises dramatically with its jagged peaks at 2,132m. In the Middle Ages people believed dragons lived here!

Take the world’s steepest cogwheel railway for a scenic ascent and get amongst adventurous activities like an epic toboggan run.

Mount Pilatus highlights

  • On edge : World’s steepest cogwheel railway
  • Glide above the mountains : Panoramic aerial cableway and gondolas to Kriens
  • Kids will love it : Family-friendly activities like a rope park, Pilu-Land playground, toboggan run and ibex safari
  • Stargaze : Astronomy evenings including accommodation up the mountain
  • For the foodies : Some cool culinary experiences like fondue in the panoramic gondola and an Easter brunch event

How to get to Pilatus from Lucerne

Mount Pilatus is another one with a cool loop route to experience a variety of transport options, it’s known as the ‘Golden Round Trip’ and it’s available from 6 May to 21 October.

Begin with a boat trip on Lake Lucerne to reach Alpnachstad, then switch to the world’s steepest cogwheel train to reach the summit at 2132m elevation. After you’ve soaked up the view and ticked off any Pilatus activities you want to do, you can jump on the ‘Dragon Ride’ aerial cableway to Fräkmüntegg, then switch to a panoramic gondola to Kriens, and then it’s just a short walk to catch the bus back to Lucerne.

All up, including time to enjoy the view and maybe grab a bite to eat, expect to spend at least five hours getting to and from Pilatus.

You can also just choose to take the same route up and back down of course, each to their own!

The cogwheel train runs from 6 May to 17 November 2024, the boat to Alpnachstad stops on 21 October but you can get there from (or back to) Lucerne by train, this is called the ‘Silver Round Trip’. If you’re visiting Pilatus before 6 May or after 17 November you can still take the aerial cableways between Kriens and Pilatus, but the boat and cogwheel won’t be running.

mount rigi visit

Mount Pilatus prices & discounts

The pricing is far too complex to write here because it really depends on the specific route you take, when you’re doing it and if you have a travel pass of some sort.

To give you a rough idea, the full Golden Round Trip from Lucerne is about 113CHF (130CHF if you want to access the 1st class boat deck), and if you are travelling in the colder months or just want to take the aerial cable cars both ways, it’s 78CHF return between Kriens and Pilatus, plus 7CHF to get from Lucerne to Kriens and back.

  • A Tell Pass gets the whole Pilatus trip included
  • A Swiss Half Fare Card gets the whole trip at half price
  • A Swiss Travel Pass will cover your transport between Lucerne and Alpnachstad (train or boat) and/or Kriens (train) for free, and you’ll get 50% off the Pilatus cogwheel railway and aerial cableways.
  • A Eurail / Interrail Pass will get you 50% off the boat trip to Alpnachstad, a free train ride between Lucerne and Alpnachstad or Kriens, and 50% off the Pilatus cogwheel railway and/or aerial cableways.

Told you it was complex!

mount rigi visit

Mount Pilatus seasonal differences

  • The mountain is open year-round but as I mentioned, the boat only runs from 6 May to 21 October and the cogwheel train only runs from 6 May to 17 November, meaning you can only do the Golden Round Trip in the warmer months
  • You can catch the aerial cableway throughout the year, except for their maintenance period from 20 October to 9 November, so if you’re visiting when the cogwheel is closed you can still take the gondolas up and down
  • Sledding, bobsledding and snowshoeing is available in winter

  • Self-guided Silver round trip from Lucerne

Mount Titlis

Experience the world’s first revolving cable car, the Rotair, for breathtaking 360-degree views and test your nerves on the Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe’s highest suspension bridge!

Mount Titlis highlights

  • 360 degrees: The world’s first rotating aerial cableway, taking ‘panoramic views’ to the next level!
  • Adrenaline rush: The Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe’s highest suspension bridge, 500m off the ground and more than 3000m above sea level
  • Ice palace: A 150m-long path 10 metres below the surface of a glacier

How to get to Titlis from Lucerne

Catch a 43 minute train to Engelberg, walk a short way to the cable car station, then it’s a trip on the Titlis Xpress cable car to Stand station and a quick switch to the Titlis Rotair revolving cable car to Titlis. The cable cars take about 30 minutes all up.

Mount Titlis prices & discounts

96CHF return from Engelberg to Titlis, and about 15CHF to get from Lucerne to Engelberg and back.

  • Tell Passes get the whole trip included
  • Swiss Travel Pass gets to Engelberg for free and then half price to Titlis
  • Swiss Half Fare Card gets the whole journey half price

mount rigi visit

Seasonal differences

  • Closed 4-15 November for maintenance but open the rest of the year
  • Skiing, SnowXPark, tobogganing and showshoeing in winter
  • Hiking, a family playground and mountain biking in summer

Best Mount Titlis tours

  • Half day guided tour from Lucerne
  • Private Engelberg, cheese & Titlis tour from Lucerne

Rigi vs. Pilatus vs. Titlis vs. Stanserhorn: The final verdict

So with all that in mind, which of Lucerne’s mountain excursions comes out on top? The truth is it really depends on what you’re looking for.

If you’re on a budget: Cost-wise they’re all about the same, but if you have a Swiss Travel Pass then you can go up Rigi and Stanserhorn for free (whereas Pilatus and Titlis are just 50% off). If you have a Tell Pass then all four are free!

If you want an easy day trip: Rigi is probably the most accessible mountain to Lucerne, making it a super convenient day trip that’s accessible for all kinds of travellers.

If you want magical views: All four mountains offer stunning panoramas, but Titlis has a higher vantage point and Rigi is known for its sweeping landscapes that seem to go for hundreds of miles.

If you want thrills: Titlis takes the top spot with its revolving cable car, glacier activities and the cliff walk. Pilatus also offers a touch of adventure with the steep cogwheel train and toboggan.

If you want to get away from the crowds: I visited all four mountains in mid-October and Stanserhorn was the quietest, it’s right at the end of their season though so that might be different depending on the time of year.

If you want snow: Titlis is snow-capped year-round thanks to its elevation.

If you’re a train nerd: Pilatus is home to the world’s steepest cogwheel railway which is a bit of an engineering marvel, if that’s what floats your boat!
