The Rotunda Hospital Dublin

Your first antenatal visit.

At your first antenatal visit, or 'booking visit', you will be seen by a midwife who will take a detailed history and assessment of your medical, surgical, obstetric and psychosocial condition. Following a review of the history, a care plan is chosen to meet your needs. It's important to contact us as early as possible when you find out you are pregnant so we can schedule your first visit with us.

We try to see women who present for a booking visit as quickly as possible.

In keeping with best practice guidelines we aim to see women for their booking visit between 12-14 weeks gestation. At this visit you will be seen by a midwife who will take a detailed history and assessment of your medical, surgical, obstetric and psychosocial condition.

Following a review of the history, a care plan is chosen to meet your needs. You are seen by a member of the medical team if further consultation is needed, to ensure the most appropriate care pathway for the pregnancy.

A baseline recording of blood pressure and a sample of urine (please provide a sample at each visit) will be taken. Blood samples are taken and a dating scan performed by an ultra-sonographer.

Book your First Visit

Please contact us as soon as possible when you know you are pregnant..

Antenatal Care

Care pathways.

Following a review of your history, a care plan, or pathway, is chosen to meet your needs.

The ‘Supported Care Pathway’ is intended for normal risk women and babies. It is delivered by the Hospital and Community Midwifery team and GP.

The ‘Assisted Care Pathway’ is intended for mothers and babies considered medium risk, this care is delivered by Obstetricians and Midwives in the hospital setting and GP.

The ‘Specialised Care Pathway’ for high-risk mothers and babies is led by the Obstetric team and involves midwives as part of a multidisciplinary team. Care will, in the main, be provided in the hospital and may include your G.P.

A woman may need to transfer, either temporarily or permanently between care pathways if an emerging risk is found.

Blood Tests

With your written permission, several blood tests are taken. You will be happy to know that all these tests are usually taken at the same time. These blood tests will:

  • Check your haemoglobin level (iron),
  • Check your blood group.
  • Check your rubella immunity (German measles) .
  • Check for sexually transmitted infections.
  • Check for varicella, which is also called ‘chickenpox’.
  • Check for sickle cell anaemia and thalassaemia.

More Information on blood tests during your First Visit

Additional tests, urine tests.

Your urine is checked at every antenatal visit. The two main tests are for protein and glucose (sugar).

Blood Pressure

Checking and recording your blood pressure at the first visit is important.

This first reading is used as a ‘baseline reading’. Every time your blood pressure is checked after that, it is compared to this reading.

Weight check

If you are of average height and weight, you can expect to gain about 10 – 15 kg (20 – 30 lbs) during the pregnancy. The only time that you are weighed in the hospital is at your first visit.

Health Insurance

Please confirm with your health insurance company that you hold an adequate level of cover for your treatment and accommodation. It is important to note that there is a 52-week waiting period applied by all insurers before you will be covered by them for maternity services.

If you choose to be a semi-private patient, you are liable for all costs associated with your maternity care.

It is your responsibility to check with your insurance company to ensure you are fully covered for your hospital stay in a multi-occupancy semi-private room.

If you choose to be a private or semi-private patient, you are liable for all costs associated with your maternity care at The Rotunda Private.

Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee that you will be offered accommodation of your choice during your stay.

Semi-Private Fees

Private medical insurance information for maternity patients.

Click to see a number of questions for your insurer that we have prepared that may help clarify your Maternity cover.  It is important that you use this guide as you will be billed personally for any outstanding costs not covered by your insurer.

Insurance Information

Accommodation rates.

Accommodation rates may increase on 1st January of each year and there is also a possible yearly increase in medical fees on the 1st July. The price charged will be applicable to the rate at time of admission.

In addition, delivery, anaesthetic, pathology and radiology consultant fees will be payable where applicable. Most policies will cover these fees but again we would advise confirming cover with your insurer.

Important note regarding your admission to hospital as a semi-private patient.

Health insurance companies cover a three night stay or five nights for caesarean section. If it is medically necessary for you to stay longer than that should be covered, although you will need to check what accommodation would be covered by your insurer.

After the birth of your baby whatever method you choose, don’t forget that you can add your baby to your policy straight away.

Insurance Forms

For your convenience please download and complete the insurance forms prior to arriving at The Rotunda Private for your care. If you have no health insurance (cash payer) and you are paying for a semi-private package, you must pay for 2 nights’ Semi-Private accommodation in advance of your admission for the birth of your baby. Other fees will also be charged. For further information about the fees and for any other queries, please contact: patient accounts department by phoning 01 – 817 1763 or 817 1764. Rotunda Private vs Public

user avatar

I think what she’s saying is that because your care under the public scheme is mainly midwife led for the birth ( doctors only called if needed, so in unlikely event of an emergency) you are less likely to need/get any sort of intervention. Midwives attend more births than doctors and are trained to intervene non-surgically. Eg to manually manipulate baby into the right position, getting you to move into a specific stance etc.

Yes the stats about getting more interventions and higher section rates are widely available and there are multiple studies on them. The results are astounding. This echoes through the American set up and you can see this clearly reading your home boards during your delivery months. Basically it comes down to people feeling a sense of entitlement to dictate what happens to them because they are paying for it, rather than following the best advice of the doctors. Then doctors feeling increased pressure to do what the patient wants rather than what they deem to be medically necessary or needed because they are getting paid directly by them and they can bring their business elsewhere if unhappy.

Hi you typically pay €1000 after your booking visit and then I could pay the remainder in whatever installments I liked. 6. Rotunda Private vs Public - Irish Mammies & Mammies to be ...

I’m semi private in the Rotunda. We paid €1000 and that covers absolutely everything. The only differences between semi and full private is that you will be in a room for 4 people as opposed to your own room and while you see a consultant each visit it may not be the same consultant.
