APT Coaches is latest to be purchased by REL Capital

APT Coaches of Rayleigh has been purchased by REL Capital, which says that it has also agreed terms with two more operators to join its stable of coach businesses.

The APT Coaches name will be retained, but operations will be brought under the O-Licence and oversight of REL Davian, the Tottenham operator that was REL’s first foray into the coach sector. REL Davian Managing Director Matthew Watson is thus to gain responsibility for APT Coaches.

The Essex business operates home-to-school services alongside private hire and tours. Its acquisition by REL follows the purchase of Reg’s Coaches and South Mimms Travel earlier in 2023 .

“We look forward to welcoming another long-established business to the group, and welcoming the APT drivers to our team and ensuring that the business goes from strength to strength over the coming months and years,” says Mr Watson.

The two other operators with which terms have been agreed are planned to work with Redwing Coaches, which was bought by REL early in 2022 . A turnaround plan for Redwing was quickly put in place which REL Chairman Andy Scott said in May had left growth for that business in sight.

REL’s initial approach of acquiring distressed businesses has since changed to the pursuit of opportunities presented by retirement sales, he continues. Various options around purchase can be explored including 100% transfer or the seller retaining a share, the group adds.

REL is now seeing “large synergies” across the operators that it owns, which has involved them “working together to keep all fleets busy.”

Mr Scott says that the group wishes to speak to further coach operators that are considering retirement or existing the industry.

“It is easier to buy businesses where they are near to our existing operating centres, but if they are larger standalones then we are happy to look anywhere,” he tells routeone .

“I have two meetings in the North of England shortly and our head office is in Peterborough. Quality of the management team is key.”

Former Metroline Volvo B7TL / PLaxton now with APT Travel of Rayleigh

One of two Plaxton Presidents, LR52BMY seems to be a regular on rail replacement work in Essex, including the London part of Essex.

On this day, the service from Newbury Park to Billericay was covered by deckers, in contrast with the service from Newbury Park to Ingatestone which was mostly coaches.

Previous Operators - Bayliss Travel

One of a pair of ex AAA Coaches Volvo B11R Sunsundegui SC7s purchased by Essex operator APT in 2019 is seen in Exmouth on an Alfa tour on 6th July, 2021.

APT Travel Scania K360 Irizar Century YR61 RWJ in Brighton this morning, 8th July, 2018, whilst on an Eastbourne based Alfa tour. It was acquired from Richard Taylor Travel in 2015.

YJ06 YRF is an Optare M880SL Solo B28F bus in the fleet of Pulham, Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire. It had been new to Jay, Greengairs, Strathclyde in July 2006, but when the operator ceased trading in January 2009, this bus found its way to Gloucestershire with Astra (Eagle Line), Andoversford, before passing to Marchant, Cheltenham in May 2014. It arrived with Pulham in November 2020.

Following on from the previous posting of APT Travel of Rayleigh, here is a shot of a different APT 42S taken at Thorpe Park on 18th July, 2006. This Volvo B10M-62 Caetano Algarve had been new to Jeffs as N790 SJU and retained Bakers of Biddulph's colours.

Irizar PB bodied Scania K114 with APT Coaches - a well travelled coach new in Ireland to Whartons as 05-CN-477. Since then it's spent time with McKenna of Lisburn, Peakes of Pontypool as K55 PKE and Princess of Southampton as 991 FOT.

Jonckheere bodied Volvo B12M with APT Coaches - new as Ellis FJ04 ERK.

Ex Bullocks Volvo B10M-62 Berkhof Excellence M786 NBA spent a few months with APT Travel, Essex, before coming down to Brightonian. It still carried its former owner's APT 42S plate when seen in Sussex, 19th July, 2011.

PT06 APT is a Scania K114EB4/Irizar Century C49Ft coach in the Essex fleet of APT, Rayleigh. It was new to McCormick (GMK Travel), Brentford, Middlesex as K50 GMK in July 2006. It was re-registered CU06 KBE in April 2010 and sold to Scania, Worksop (Q) by July 2010, when it was loaned to Barnard, Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincolnshire until the following month. It joined APT in October 2010, immediately receiving its current mark.

Former Majestic, Shareshill, Volvo B10M-60 Jonckheere Deauville 599 G654 ONH spent less that two years with APT Travel. It carried Travelsphere colours and plate A10 APT as shown in this view (in Manchester??) on 14th January, 1995.

ACZ 121 is a Volvo B10M-62/Jonckheere Mistral C48Ft coach in the fleet of Laser, Llanharry, Mid Glamorgan. It was new to Wallace Arnold as Y717 HWT in April 2001, passing to Volvo, Loughborough (Q) in May 2003. It joined Coach Services, Thetford, Norfolk in August 2004, passing to APT Coaches, Rayleigh, Essex in November 2008. It arrived with Laser in May 2009 and was given its current mark the following month.

A recent addition to the fleet of APT, Rayleigh, Essex is BT06 LCT, a Scania K114EB4/Berkhof Axial 90 C49Ft coach. It was new to Leons, Stafford in March 2006, but was operated by Pat's Coaches, Southsea, North Wales, as 405 UPJ from November 2010.

MH06 YZM is a Bova FHD12-340 Futura C49Ft coach in the fleet of APT Coaches, Rayleigh, Essex. It was new to Grey (The Rutland Hotel), Torquay, Devon as S14 RUT in March 2006. A change of hotel ownership took it to Hamlin (The Rutland Hotel), Torquay in April 2007. It had been given its current mark by the time it passed to APT Coaches in October 2012.

CN54 VOC is a Scania K114IB4/Irizar PB C49Ft coach in the fleet of APT, Rayleigh, Essex. It was new to Wharton's, Crossdoney, Republic of Ireland as 05-CN-477 in January 2005, passing to McKenna (Richmond Coaches), Lisburn, Northern Ireland in June 2010. It was re-registered J55 PKE on joining Peakes Coaches, Pontypool, Gwent in October 2010. It had however been re-registered CN54 VOC by the time it passed to Princess, West End, Hampshire, although it was promptly re-registered 991 FOT. It had reverted to CN54 VOC in June 2015 and had passed to APT by the time this photo was taken in September 2015.

YN08 OWZ is an Irisbus (Iveco) 397E.12.33 Eurorider/Plaxton Paragon C61F coach in the fleet of APT Coaches, Rayleigh, Essex. It was new to Austin, Earlston, Berwickshire in July 2008. It was sold to Plaxton, Anston (Q) in July 2011 and after various operator loans, it had joined Kiddles, Warboys, Cambridgeshire by February 2012. It passed to Collier (Sun Fun Travel), Earith, Cambridgeshire around August 2013. It joined APT Coaches in August 2014.

Former Harry Shaw Neoplan Skyliner G300 XAC spent a year with Ebdon's Tours before briefly moving onto APT of Rayleigh. When seen in Hastings on 15th August, 1996, it retained Ebdon's colours.

Pictured awaiting an MOT Test at Pulham's Coaches at the end of December 2023, having departed the fleet of APT Coaches, Rayleigh, Essex is YN08 OWZ, an Irisbus (Iveco) 397E.12.33 Eurorider/Plaxton Paragon coach. It had been new to Austin, Earlston, Berwickshire in July 2008. It was sold to Plaxton, Anston (Q) in July 2011 and after various operator loans, it had joined Kiddles, Warboys, Cambridgeshire by February 2012. It passed to Collier (Sun Fun Travel), Earith, Cambridgeshire around August 2013 and joined APT Coaches in August 2014. It was to find a new owner in Bridgnorth Bus & Coach, Wilden, Worcestershire in January 2024.

Another Bova Futura seen at Dover Docks. This is aptly registered APT Travel of Rayeigh 827 APT on a Travelsphere tour in August 1998. It had been new to Limebourne as L206 RAK.

Ex Harry Shaw Scania K113CRB Irizar Century M213 NHP is seen in Dover in May, 1998, during a brief spell with APT Travel of Rayleigh.

APT Travel Volvo B9R Sunsundegui Sideral BX12 CVS was new to Bayliss, Deal, and is seen in Brighton today, 19th October, 2017.

Blue Sky Coaches, Leeds V20YAL, a Scania L94IB with Van Hool Alizee bodywork was photographed at Manchester Piccadilly station on 3 September 2017 when operating a rail replacement service on behalf of Northern (Arriva Rail North). The coach was new to Chambers Coaches, Moneymore in August 1999 registered V77CCH and also operated for Royale European Coaches, APT Travel and York Pullman.

APT Travel have recently added this Volvo B10M-62 Berkhof Axial to their fleet. APT 42S was new to Limebourne as R917 ULA and was seen returning to base from an afternoon school run on 14th October, 2014.

NBC's fleet of long wheelbase Leyland Olympian commuter coaches became something of white elephants although a few adventurous coach operators tried to make something of their limited virtues. Former Alder Valley YPJ 505Y ended its PSV days with Essex based APT Travel and had provided useful high capacity for a school trip to the Millennium Dome 7th July, 2000. Its livery is a moderate adaptation of Lucketts colours, its previous owner.

This Scania K113CRB Van Hool Alizee was new to Ambassador Travel, Great Yarmouth, as M321 VET and was operating for APT Travel of Rayleigh as APT 42S when seen at Chessington World of Adventures on 13th July, 2009.

APT Travel of Rayleigh BMC Probus BX08 EZR is seen in Brighton on 5th August, 2015. It retians the red livery applied by previous owner Attain Travel, Birminghsm.

APT Travel Scania K114 Irizar PB APT 42S is seen at London Excel yesterday, 29th February, 2016. It was new to Whartons Tours, Crossdoney, as 05-CN-477 and has more recently operated for Peakes and Princess.
