South America Tours & Vacations

A Bolivian llama among the cactus in South America

Colorful, candid and everything in-between. South America beats to the rhythm of an infectious, eternal drum.

It is the sequined heat of Carnival and a cool breeze blowing across the Andes, a fiery Argentine tango and the soft silence of an Ecuadorian cloud forest. You taste it in the crackle of slow-cooked barbecue and the tang of a good pisco sour. About the only thing the continent lacks is monotony. From the rocky slopes of Galapagos to the dawn-lit ruins of Machu Picchu , South America is effervescent with sights, sounds and salsa. Now, pass the empanadas and let's talk adventure.

This is a wonderful trip allowing you to see the best of both Argentinian and Chilean Patagonia. I strongly encourage taking the Torres del Paine W trek in winter, clear skies, less wind and very few people on the tracks. It is a great way to discover this wonderful place.
Had an amazing time thank you so much to Edwin for helping us at each stage. Had an absolutely beautiful time seeing Peru. Cusco was the most stunning place I've ever seen, has my heart ❤️

Guide was excellent. Loved all the places I got to see. Felt a bit rushed and disorganized at times, more so towards the end of the tour but wasn't really a problem for me.
Crew and Naturalists were great. Vessel is a relic of times past but comfortable and easy to use on the itenary. Iquitos to Iquitos went smoothly and well, Lima had hot water issues at hotel and we were all uncomfortable with that. Monika tried hard but might need some training regarding dealing with difficulties. Attention to professionalism and flexibility in response to difficult situations would improve the experience.

We had an absolutely incredible time in Peru during our Andean World adventure booked with Lima Tours through Tourradar. From the moment we landed in Lima right until our check in at Puno we were fully accommodated by Lima Tours’ excellent organisation and briliant array of informative and passionate tour guides. We will never forget our time travelling through Peru and that is largely down to the excellence of Lima Tours and Tourradar!

tour radar and Wanderful Holidays were effortless to work with. Solid communication with fast responses
We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and it was, in general, well coordinated with information provided each day confirming the next day's transfers and local tours. The local guides for each leg were very friendly and informative. Each of the major stops involved one free day. We utilised this effectively in Buenos Aires to spend a day in an area not visited (Palmero district) as part of the organised day tour. We didn't have much to do on the free days in El Calafate and Puerto Natales and felt the tour could have run a couple of days shorter by cutting out those two days. When making the bus trip from El Calafate (Argentina) to Puerto Natales (Chile), we were required to complete online forms in quick time at the bus stop, which was a bit stressful and would recommend having been advised of these requirements the previous evening. Also, a couple of the accommodations did not include our required bedding requirements. But overall it was a great tour and we saw some wonderful places.

OneSeed was beyond my expectations! All the teammates - Shelby, Chris - were very helpful and supportive from the pre-trip until the end. My favorite part of the trip was getting to know all the details and history behind Sacred Valley in Peru, and having Wilbert as our guide. His knowledge makes the difference for sure. It was so special having his presence during the tours. This expedition has changed my perspective of trips. It was my first time traveling to a such historic location, and I'll keep my mind open for that kind of trip. I'm already excited to have a new expedition with them.
Epic adventure, everything was perfectly organized

On The Go Tours

On The Go Tours

  • Excellent - 3,023 reviews for South America tours
Our tour leader, Joanne Lunn was not up to the standard required. Day 1 The tour start was compromised by the tour leader deciding that the half day tour be undertaken on the first day rather than the second. Due to flight delays this tour was hurried and we missed the Recoletta. We did undertake this on the second day and were extremely lucky to meet up with a guide who allowed us to join his tour. Otherwise we would have walked the site with no real idea of what we were looking at as our guide did not have that knowledge. We understand that the half day tour being moved to day 1 was to allow any of the party to undertake a full day tour on the second day. We had investigated this option, but after looking at the options, decided against this as we had seen much of BA earlier. Our understanding was that the tour options were to be discussed with us, but this did not happen. If we had booked a tour we would have missed out on the Recoletta. Rosie could have undertaken a day tour to Iguazu Falls, but that was not offered as an option. Lack of preparation. Jo made reference to a 27 Page dossier, with no evidence to show that she had reviewed and was making use of the information contained within it. She was unaware of distances and duration of travel each day, unaware of how many meals we were having each day in relation to the dossiers that we had been given. There was little evidence that preparation had been done in sufficient detail as Jo was completely reliant on the daily guides and local offices for specific information. Reverting to Internet searches when access to guides was not available. There was lack of preparation on important issues such as health and safety. She had no idea of the high risk of Denge fever in BA despite this making international news a few days before the tour started. On day one she should have discussed the possible signs and symptoms of Altitude sickness rather than it coming up in conversation between us. Jo worked out what she considered was the requirement for tips for the entire trip. This was $US40 per person. We all thought that a bit light and agreed on $US50 each. This was all used just after the halfway point of the tour. We are still unsure of why this happened as the tips had been pre-calculated. As the trip progressed she was asking us about tips for the guide and driver when she had apparently calculated tips going forward as referred to. If she was going to arrange tips she should have discussed with Liz, who she met up with on two occasions, what level of tip was appropriate rather than asking us. Again demonstrating lack of preparation. On the day bus ride from Puno to Cusco, Jo's notes (which she had provided to us) indicated that she would be providing snacks for that ride. These did not eventuate. At the single stop we did have she asked if we required something to eat. We responded no as it was too early for lunch. It was never explained to us that this would be the only stop. On the trip to Cafeyate we had a Spanish only speaking guide. We asked numerous questions which Jo translated. It was obvious that detailed responses were made, but only one line replies were fed back to us. Jo has a number of personality traits that were not suitable for a tour leader: Continually interrupting conversations we were having. Very rude. Treating us as though we were children, despite the fact we were all seasoned traveller's. Telling Rosie her room is on the first floor when her room number was 104 is an example. Jo had not done this tour before. She made many assumptions that were not correct and did not make sense to us. She was often proved wrong and had to change her story. This was a direct result of her lack of knowledge and insufficient research. We got to the stage where we did not know what to believe in the everchanging story. She also interrupted guides on many occasions ruining the flow of the commentary. She also interjected with comments that were incorrect and needed correction by the guide. Basically, she talked and interrupted far too often to make the trip enjoyable. Inappropriate interventions of assistance that were not required such as carrying bags when she had her own to manage. Jo commented to my wife Jan at one stage that she was the 'easy one' or something along those lines. This is totally inappropriate given that I, as Jan's spouse was one of the people she was referring to as being difficult. Jo could learn a lot from the way Edwin worked. At the end of each day he gave a clear and concise summary of what expect on the following day, when we would start and what to wear. At one point, in San Pedro de Atacama we had to sit her down and ask a number of pointed questions to get required information. There was a distinct impression that Jo was on the tour because she had not seen most of the sights before. Very nice for her, but it meant she did not have the knowledge to guide this tour properly and was always scrambling to get information to answer our queries. The trip had great scenery and other highlights, and could have been an excellent experience with the right guide.
Just got home from this tour, it was amazing! Our tour guide, Berner, was the best. As a very limited Spanish speaking person, it was so so helpful to have the guide to help with airports, ordering food, understanding the cultures, tipping, etc. We went through heaps of Inca ruins including Machu Picchu. If you like hiking definitely do the single day Inca trail trek, it was one of my favourite hikes ever, and it ends at Machu Picchu. We did a hike up rainbow mountain on our free day in Peru which was well worth it, but the altitude is a big adjustment. Peru was definitely my favourite country to visit. Bolivia / La Paz was a nice, we went to the Cholitas wrestling on our free afternoon and it was wild/great. Lake Titicaca was beautiful but mostly a tourist trap. Isla de Sol was so beautiful. Paraguay felt quite dangerous, but we were only there for a night. And it was necessary to get to Iguazu. Definitely need your yellow fever international certificate (yellow booklet) to get into Paraguay. Iguazu falls on the Argentina side was so beautiful. The walk is filled with butterflies. Definitely do the boat cruise to the base, but you will be soaked so take extra clothes and shoes. The Brazilian side of the falls is packed with tourists and no where near as enjoyable as the Argentinian side. Rio was amazing, I wish I had a spare day or two here to explore a bit more. Christ the Redeemer is magnificent. It feels a bit unsafe at night time though, the day is fine. Would definitely recommend! There’s lots of travel days but so worth it. The altitude in Peru can make you feel a bit yuck but you adjust. Enjoy! And thank you!

Oasis Overland

Oasis Overland

  • Good - 59 reviews for South America tours
Be warned this is a bare bones tour where Oasis provides transportation, a way to group prepare food and money for that food when not in town (but no refrigeration and a tight budget), and minimal accomodations. You will normally stay in dorm rooms, often with people not traveling with you, or stay in gas station parking lots in provided tents, some that leaked. While included activities are included, they are few. Optional and other activities are the responsibility of the passengers to locate and book themselves. Accomodations aren't always in town. An example is where the description talks about Devil's Island and the European Spaceport, the only Oasis affordable accommodation in Kourou was a campground 20 km out of town in a town famous for few taxis. So it was next to impossible to visit both of them without 'leaving the truck' for several days and finding our own transportation and own more expensive accomodations. Which some of us did. We lucked out on Kaieteur Falls because we just happened to have the right number of passengers who wanted to go in order to charter a flight and one of the passengers was willing to organize it. But don't count on seeing the falls unless you 'leave the truck' for many days to catch a scheduled flight with enough passengers. In the future I will likely take busses and book my own accomodations to save money and see more. Or go on all inclusive tours. Some people really like the forced social interaction on a budget and some liked they didn't have to think about the transportation or accomodations, only the rest for a bit more cost than self travel. This trip is for them.
Was awesome!!! Ricardo was the best guide ever, always there when you need him, and helped us to organise stuff when we went off on our own. Highly recommend this tour

Kantu Peru Tours

Kantu Peru Tours

  • Excellent - 387 reviews for South America tours
I really enjoyed visiting Peru and exploring the food and culture in Cusco. The itinerary is well organized and you cover a lot of ground in just 7 days. It does get pretty hectic towards the end with early mornings and hikes scheduled back to back, but the views at the end of the hikes to Rainbow mountain and Humantay lake were totally worth it. I loved my stay at Munay Wasi Inn. The room was super comfortable and the staff is excellent. It's also very close to the city square and perfect location-wise. Highly recommend the hotel! My main issue with this trip was that it's not a traditional 7-day group tour like it's advertised. Its a 7-day package but with separate, day tours each day. You basically get a new tour guide and tour group everyday. Some of the guides were excellent (Rafael who accompanied us to Humantay was wonderful!) but there were a couple who just not fully invested in the tour or showed up very late or were unprofessional. The accommodation at Aguast Calientes was not great either and I'd just recommend doing a day trip to Macchu Picchu (and not spending a night at Aguas Calientes). If you're considering heading to Peru, I would recommend making your own hotel/hostel reservations and then booking day tour packages with Kantu Peru based on your schedule and preferences. That gives you more flexibility. There's no benefit really in booking the 7-day package and locking yourself to a schedule. You get the same guides, transportation, food and service irrespective of whether you do the 7 or 5 day package or just the day tours-- it's better to do the latter since there's more flexibility (you can pick which dates you want vs being assigned a date with the package) and no price difference either.
We were really happy with this tour. Kantu Peru tour operation was impressive. Since the day we signed up for this tour, their staff worked with us very patiently to customize the plan and accomodated our requests in all possible ways and all throughout the trip. The day trips were very well organized, always on-time and the tour guides were friendly, helpful and knowledgable. Choices of hotels, design of itineraries and coordination were all amazing. Thank you for all the efforts you made to make this a memorable family trip for us.

What are the 10 Best South America Travel Agencies & Tour Companies in 2024?

When searching for the best South America travel agencies, a simple Google search yields hundreds of results. These agencies range from those offering group tours to those specializing in tailor-made and luxury experiences. With so many options available, it can be challenging to determine which ones are trustworthy, if their tours align with your travel needs, or if they provide good value for your money. So, how can you identify the top South American tour companies?

Amid the plethora of tour operators offering trips worldwide, we have handpicked some of the best travel companies that focus exclusively on South America, making them true experts in the region. We dedicated hours to scouring the Internet and comparing numerous agencies before selecting the top 10 South America tour companies. Our criteria for selection included the thoroughness of their website and the presence of online tour offers, whether the company caters to specific types of travelers, and their commitment to sustainability. However, the most crucial factor was the existence of local offices. Local offices ensure the lowest tour prices, provide in-depth knowledge of the destination, and offer quick and direct assistance during your trip to South America.

#10  South American Vacations

Operating out of Florida, South American Vacations specializes in organizing tours to six South American countries, along with Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, and Antarctica. The company caters particularly to outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide array of adventure-packed itineraries. From ziplining in Costa Rica to sea kayaking in Ecuador, their tours promise exhilarating experiences. For those preferring a more leisurely pace, opportunities for wildlife viewing in Brazil's Amazon or horseback riding in Peru await.

Based in California, Vaya operates with a team of American ex-pats, primarily catering to North American travelers. While they lack local offices, their exemplary customer care and service quality shine through their extensive connections with local guides across Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Committed to sustainable tourism, Vaya prioritizes small-scale, low-impact tours led by fairly compensated local guides, ensuring minimal environmental footprint and maximum benefit to local communities. They proudly endorse three organizations dedicated to sustainable tourism practices, ecosystem protection, and community livelihood improvement in the regions where Vaya conducts its tours.

Private Services

Private services are exclusive for you/your travelling companions which means you receive a higher level of personalised service from your guide. The departure time of private tours can be specified, their attention will be completely devoted to you and you can travel at your own pace within the allocated time.

*Please note that in some remote/more expensive regions, a private driver only service may be used to bring down the costs. This will be specified on our itineraries.

south america travel agency

We generally do not use accommodation that is considered less than a 3 star hotel and our properties all include private bathroom facilities. (In some less developed places, only 2 star hotels may be available but this is rare and even in these cases, they will have a private bathroom.)

Our philosophy is that location is paramount when you are staying in a city for a few nights, as being central to the attractions and restaurants makes a big difference to your experience. And as safety is a concern for some of our clients, we can often suggest districts/suburbs they may find more appealing.

south america travel agency

Hotel Grading

Value hotels, clean and with a reasonable level of comfort with rooms that may vary in terms of size. Most have local or are operated by local chains and offer good location. Hotels have private bathrooms.

Tourist Sup

Better hotels with extra benefits and are slightly better located that the standard tourist options. These hotels will often fall between the categories of 3 and 4 stars in terms of price and standard.

First Class

Good hotels with comfortable rooms and great facilities and service. A lot of these are new hotels or have been recently upgraded and strive to maintain the standard of their facilities.

DeluxeClass

Excellent hotels, often leading properties in their respective cities, either based on world class design or cultural characteristics. Ideal for travellers who like to travel in style and prefer a high level of comfort.

Exclusive hotels with plenty of character, focused on design or special themes, often smaller in size in terms of rooms and offering exceptional service for a unique experience.
