Stuntman Pass - Filmpark Babelsberg

And even the youngest visitors will have fun: at the witch's house from Hansel and Gretel, at Flimmy's Gold Rush or in Panama - Janosch's dreamland, children's hearts beat faster. Fun and entertainment is guaranteed for the whole family. As a highlight, Filmpark Babelsberg presents the outdoor decoration "Lummerland", from the cinema film production " Jim Knopf & Lukas der Lokomotivführer ", based on the best-selling children's and young people's book by Michael Ende.

In the exhibition "Das Sandmännchen - Abenteuer im Traumland" (The Sandman - Adventures in Dreamland), little fans can get closer to their childhood hero and can even have a souvenir photo taken with him in the green-screen studio. In addition, children can explore the original "Löwenzahn" construction wagon from the science programme of the same name and finally let off steam in the adventure playground: The pendulum seesaw, the ropeway or a seesaw bridge require courage and skill, while in the bush house or on the palm island, on the other hand, one can retreat after mastering adventures.

Offers such as "Backstage with the Stunt Crew" give school classes a taste of film air. In the "Klasse(n) Filme(n)" project, pupils can make their own film under professional guidance. The Snapshot Factory is also a creative place where numerous interactive sets are available for photos and videos. Whether it's a selfie or a professional shoot - with perfectly lit sets ranging from press wall to prison cell, there's something for every shooting.

Babelsberg Studios

Studio Babelsberg is the oldest large-scale studio complex in the world and one of Europe’s leading service providers for feature films and TV productions. Since 1912, countless renowned filmmakers have worked with Studio Babelsberg to produce legendary films. With a complete set of services that make Studio Babelsberg a one-stop shop, the studio employs one of the best crews in the world and is well known for its unique production service, skillful set construction department and huge prop shops.

Many of Germany’s most famous classic films have been created at the stages and facilities of Studio Babelsberg, including Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and Josef von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel , starring Marlene Dietrich. More recent movies shot here include Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds , Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer and Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous .

With 16 sound stages, various back lots and exterior sets on a 39-acre lot, fist-class technical capabilities, highly skilled crews, attractive shooting locations nearby and its close proximity to the trendy city of Berlin, the Studio offers ideal conditions for any production need. In addition, Studio Babelsberg offers a wide variety of co-production and financing services and opportunities.

At the moment, the studio does not offer tours, but the nearby FilmPark Babelsberg is worth a visit.

  • Various back lots and exterior sets on a 39-acre lot
  • Stage 1: Marlene Dietrich Halle With its total floor space of 60,000sqft and its 46ft. ceiling, this stage counts among Europe’s largest sound stages – an ideal location for feature film production. The complex is divided into three stages, the main 22,600sqft. stage and two additional stages, offering 17,760sqft. each. The stages at Marlene Dietrich Halle are all equipped with a broadband communication network (Monomode).
  • Stage 2: Tonkreuz This historic building was erected in 1929 as Germany’s first sound stage. It now houses a high-tech film and television production complex, outfitted with the latest technology.
  • Stage 15 78,954 sq ft.

Berliner Street In the fall of 1998, Studio Babelsberg built a permanent exterior film set modeled after a typical Berlin street setting. The set is built on a 1.7acre lot and includes 26 facades. The feature films Sonnenallee, The Pianist and Flame & Citron have been all shot on the back lot. The facades resemble a typical urban architecture of the late 19th, early 20th century and can be easily dressed to incorporate European cities such as Paris, Rome or London.

Village of the Middle Ages This set was built for a movie in 1984, and is now part of the Filmpark studio tour.

1911 – Bioscop company builds it’s first film studio in Babelsberg. The stages are constructed completely of glass to allow maximum sunlight onto the stage.

1912 , February 12th – Filming begins for The Dance of the Dead by Danish director Urban Gad.

1918 – After the World War I, the Deutsche Bioscop Gesellschaft merges with the German branch of the French film concern Eclair Decla in Babelsberg into “Decla Bioscop”.

1921 – Decla Bioscop becomes part of Universum Film AG (UFA) which had been founded in 1917.

1926 – UFA builds the large studio (which is now known as the “Marlene Dietrich Halle” and still in use today) to accommodate the huge sets for the major film production of Metropolis by Fritz Lang.

1929 – The first German sound stage in Babelsberg, the Tonkreuz, is built. Melodie des Herzens/Melody of the Heart with Willy Fritsch was the first German full-sound film.

1930 – The premiere of The Blue Angel by Josef von Sternberg starring Marlene Dietrich and Emil Jannings.

From 1933 to 1945, around 1,000 feature films were made in the studios and on the studio lot. Under the direction of Hitler’s propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels, the studio churned out hundreds of films including Leni Riefenstahl’s openly propagandistic Triumph of the Will. The virally anti-Semitic propaganda film Jud Süss (The Jew Süss), shot in 1940, was also made at Babelsberg.

1946 – May 17 – The DEFA – Deutsche Film AG – was established. It produced over 800 feature films, including 150 children’s films. In addition, over 600 films were produced for television from 1959 to 1990. The DEFA period was honored by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York in 2005.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Treuhand took over the responsibility for the privatisation of the former DEFA. In August 1992, the Treuhandanstalt sold the former DEFA film studios in Babelsberg to the French group Compagnie Générale des Eaux (later absorbed into Vivendi Universal). Over the following 12 years the company invested around €500 million updating the studio’s infrastructure.

1998 – Fall – A permanent exterior film set is built, modeled after a typical Berlin street setting. The set is built on a 1.7acre lot and includes 26 facades. The feature films “Sonnenallee”, “The Pianist” and “Flame & Citron” have been all shot on the back lot. The facades resemble a typical urban architecture of the late 19th, early 20th century and can be easily dressed to incorporate European cities such as Paris, Rome or London.

In July 2004 , Vivendi sold Studio Babelsberg to the investment company FBB (Filmbetriebe Berlin Brandenburg GmbH), which has Carl Woebcken and Christoph Fisser as shareholders. In Spring of 2005, the restructured studio presented an initial public offering and began trading on the free market.

2007 – The most profitable year since the Studio’s privatization in 1992 – 12 feature films were shot at Studio Babelsberg, among them Valkyrie with Tom Cruise, The International with Clive Owen, and The Reader with Kate Winslet.

In 2008 Studio Babelsberg and Hollywood producer Joel Silver formed a strategic alliance to produce feature films from the Dark Castle production slate at the world’s oldest film studio. Recent co-productions of Studio Babelsberg include Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer.

2010 – Studio Babelsberg announces a joint venture with Paris based production and sales outfit Celluloid Dreams and Munich based financing company Clou Partners.

2012 – Studio Babelsberg celebrated it’s 100th anniversary.

Filmpark Babelsberg – A great place for movie lovers and children

Since 2002, Berlin has not owned a real theme park anymore. Obviously this is quite a shame for children because they love adventure parks. It’s good though, that there are some fun parks for children around Berlin. The Filmpark Babelsberg in Potsdam is a small adventure park which is perfect for smaller children.

From Studio Babelsberg to a children park

Filmpark Babelsberg is a renowned film studio located in Potsdam. It is one of the oldest large-scale film studio in the world and opened its doors for the first time in 1912. Movies like The Hunger Games, John Wick and The Matrix Resurrections have been shot at Filmpark Babelsberg. In the year 1991 Studio Babelsberg opened its doors for the public and became an attraction for young and old.

The western show in Filmpark Babelsberg

Live Shows, Attractions and more

The adventure park offers its visitors the world of German filmmaking, exciting live shows and a whole bunch of children attractions. It’s a great daytrip for both children and parents: The children can enjoy the attractions and the parents can learn more about their favourite movies. Some of the highlights in Filmpark Babelsberg are:

The Stuntman in Vulcano live show in Filmpark Babelsberg

Different liveshows

Filmpark Babelsberg offers three live shows which were the highlight of our day. The western-show was exciting for the kids and fun for us parents. Then there is the spectactular Stuntshow in a vulcano which was a bit too scary for our 4-year old son but the first 10 minutes looked very promising. For older children this is definitely a highlight. Later in the afternoon you can learn more about the shooting of a movie in the live show Crazy day of shooting .

The panama boat ride in Filmpark Babelsberg

Panama Bootride

Altogether we went into the boatride of Panama (Janosch Dreamland) 4 times. Our son really loved seeing all the small attractions along the way and it was some nice relaxation for us as parents. If it’s not too busy you are even allowed to stay in the boat for another round. The personell was very friendly.

XD Motion Ride

XD Motion Ride

The XD Motion Ride is an interactive video game where you need to shoot pirates together with the other visitors. It’s exciting as you actually get to see the score at the end of the game. Our son really liked it and I noticed becoming quite competitive after not winning the first round.

The Jim Knopf Playground in Filmpark Babelsberg

Other Highlights

Besides the three highlights above, there is plenty more to be seen in this adventure park in Potsdam. We spend quite some time in the Jim Knopf Playground with large slides and also walked through the Sandmann-House. The short movie in the 4D-Action Cinema was also fun.

Food & Shops

Besides all the above there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. We liked the fact that there were vegetarian options like a vegetarian burger or a rice-dish with veggies. The prices are reasonable and the staff was very friendly and effective. Obviously you can also visit the typical theme-park shops to buy your children a souvenir or some candy.

Opening Hours and Practical Information

Filmpark Babelsberg is typically open from April through October. The opening-hours depend on the time of the year but usually the doors open at 10Am and close between 5-7PM. Filmpark Babelsberg is easily to reach by car and the parking only costs 4€. You can also reach this adventure park by train without much hassle. If you want to know the exact information, check out the website of Filmpark Babelsberg .

The entrance of Filmpark Babelsberg

Frequently asked questions Filmpark Babelsberg

If the information above did not get you the answer you were looking for, you might find an answer in the FAQs:

The ticket prices are 23€ for grown-ups and 17€ for children between 4-16 years old. Younger children are allowed to get in for free. You can also buy a family-ticket for 69-79€ which is valid for up to 5 people. Compared to attractions like Little Big City Berlin or the Zoo these prices are reasonable.

Children between 2 and 6 years old are going to have most fun at Filmpark Babelsberg. But older children will also love attractions like the XD Motion Ride. Our daughter was 1,5 years old and also liked the boat ride and the playground.

Yes dogs are allowed in Filmpark Babelsberg but need to be on a short leash at all times.

Usually people spend between 4-6 hours at Filmpark Babelsberg. With the shows, some food and all the attractions you can easily spend a full day here though. There are plenty of spots to sit down and relax with your children (e.g. the Jim Knopf Playground).

It should not come as a surprise that it’s more busy in the weekends. If you have to choose between Saturday and Sunday, the Sunday is better because it’s less crowded usually.

Summary: A bit outdated but still great fun for young and old

Filmpark Babelsberg is a great activity for parents with young children . Some attractions are a bit outdated and above a certain age children will probably be bored. But if your children are 6 years or younger we are confident that they are going to have a great time. Our children would like to go again every weekend. Just do not expect a theme-park with rollercoasters but more a cosy family adventure park. If we compare it to Holland-Park which we also visited this year, we feel Filmpark Babelsberg is a more exciting day-trip.

Fun – Kids 2-6 Years:  8/10 Fun- Kids 6-10 Years:  5/10 Fun – Parents:  8/10 Price:  Acceptable (23€) Expected time:  If no limitations, 4-6 hours Overall rating:  7/10

Cleverly combining auditory, sculptural and interactive elements, Groundswell  prompts a meditation on our relationships with the earth and one another. A six-meter platform sits atop a sea of some 40,000 illuminated steel spheres and tilts as you walk on top, causing rippling waves of cascading ball bearings to summon a complex oceanic soundscape.

When designing Dew Drops , the artist was inspired by this ancient context and visually drawn to the way dew forms a perfectly convex and round orb on top of certain types of lichen. The work inspires viewers to ponder how something so seemingly small could act as a vessel for an entire microscopic world. There is so much life beyond what we see within a drop of dew.

Of Earth and Sky is a large-scale poetry installation in which poetry and text created by Charlotte poets are curated and installed across dozens of sites throughout Charlotte, forming a temporary sculpture trail for the public to discover. Whilst the landscape affects the interpretation of the text, the text animates and influences the interpretation of the landscape.

1912 - 1933

1933 - 1945, 1946 - 1990, 1990 - 2003, 2004 - 2011, 2012 - today.

On February 12, 1912 , the camera rolls for the first time in Babelsberg – Danish director Urban Gad is shooting Der Totentanz (The Dance of the Dead) starring Asta Nielsen, thus marking the birth of Studio Babelsberg, the oldest film studio in the world.

After the end of the World War I, the production company Deutsche Bioscop Gesellschaft merges with the German branch of the French film studio Éclair “Decla” to create “Decla Bioscop” in Babelsberg.

studio babelsberg visit

In 1921 , Decla Bioscop becomes part of Universum Film AG (Ufa), which was founded in 1917 . In order to accommodate the production of Metropolis , Ufa builds a sound stage still in use to this day, "Marlene-Dietrich-Halle" in 1926.

By building the "Tonkreuz" , Germany's first sound stage, the studio ushers into a new era, producing the first German language sound film in 1929 , Melody of the Heart starring Willy Fritsch.

In 1930 , the studio celebrates the premiere of The Blue Angel by Josef von Sternberg starring Marlene Dietrich and Emil Jannings.

The economic recession at the end of the 1920s drives UFA close to bankruptcy. After the Nazis took power in 1933, the "Ministry for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda" commissions a number of Nazi-propaganda pictures. Filmmakers like Josef von Sternberg, Fritz Lang, Ernst Lubitsch, Billy Wilder and film stars like Marlene Dietrich leave Germany to try their luck in Hollywood.

The production of entertainment still remains the Studio's main function, in order to distract the German audience from the terrors of war. During this era, the studio produces pictures such as Münchhausen (Baron Munchhausen) and Feuerzangenbowle. The stars of the time are Zarah Leander, Heinz Rühmann and Hans Albers.

Due to Joseph Goebbel's decree that entertainment is part of the war effort, the German film industry keeps production going until the last days of the war in 1945 . In August of 1945, the studio lot becomes subject to allied law and is occupied by the Soviet military administration until 1947.

After the end of World War 2, the studio is immediately put back to work. On May 4, 1946 , filming begins on Wolfgang Staudte’s The Murderers Are Among Us starring Hildegard Knef. On May 17, 1946 , the German-Soviet stock corporation DEFA (Deutsche Film AG) is founded. The studio becomes the exclusive location for feature film production in the GDR and, with about 2,500 employees, advances to one of the largest employers in the region.

studio babelsberg visit

From 1946 to 1990 , DEFA produces more than 1.200 feature and television pictures of various artistic and political color, including Das kalte Herz (1950), Der Untertan (1951), Die Geschichte vom kleinen Muck (1953), Nackt unter Wölfen (1963), Das singende, klingende Bäumchen (1957), Das Kaninchen bin ich (1965), Spur der Steine (1966), Die Legende von Paul und Paula (1973), Solo Sunny (1980), and Coming Out (1989). In 1976, Jakob der Lügner (Jacob the Liar) becomes the only GDR film production to ever be nominated for an Academy Award.

studio babelsberg visit

In August 1992 , Treuhand sells the former DEFA studios in Babelsberg to the French corporation Compagnie Générale des Eaux (that would later become Vivendi Universal).

Over the next 12 years, the parent company invests around €250M in the film studio, thus creating the infrastructure that allows the studio to prevail in today’s market.

studio babelsberg visit

In July 2004 , Vivendi sells Studio Babelsberg to the investment company FBB - Filmbetriebe Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, with Dr. Carl L. Woebcken and Christoph Fisser as shareholders. In spring 2005 , the company is converted into a stock corporation.

2007 is the most successful financial year since privatisation in 1992 – 12 German and international feature films are produced, including The Reader , Valkyrie , The Bourne Ultimatum .

studio babelsberg visit

In 2009 , Quentin Tarantino and Roman Polanski – two of the world's most famous directors – work in Babelsberg. The films Inglourious Basterds and The Ghostwriter receive international acclaim and recognition after their cinema releases.

In 2010-2011 , Studio Babelsberg produces films such as Unknown , The Apparition , Hanna , Chicken with Plums and The Three Musketeers 3D .

studio babelsberg visit

In 2012 , Studio Babelsberg celebrates its 100th anniversary. The restored version of the first Babelsberg motion picture, Der Totentanz ( The Dance of Death ) is shown at the ceremony on 12 February. The anniversary is accompanied by numerous events and special exhibitions, among them at the Filmmuseum Potsdam, at the Deutsche Kinemathek Berlin, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and during the Berlin International Film Festival.

In 2013 , several international productions ( The Book Thief , The Monuments Men , The Grand Budapest Hotel , The Voices ) bring a myriad of stars to Babelsberg including George Clooney, Wes Anderson, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Ralph Fiennes, Matt Damon, Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Arterton, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum and Harvey Keitel.

In 2014 , Studio Babelsberg celebrates three world premieres in the Berlinale Competition for the first time in its history. In the same year, Studio Babelsberg co-produces The Hunger Games: Mockingjay , Point Break and Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies among others.

In 2015 , Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel is awarded four Oscars: Best Production Design (Adam Stockhausen), Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Frances Hannon, Mark Coulier), Best Costume Design (Milena Canonero) and Best Music, Original Score (Alexandre Desplat).

In 2016 , Studio Babelsberg opens one of the largest and most modern backlots in Europe, the Neue Berliner Straße/Metropolitan Backlot. The flexible backlot can be converted to every city of the world with four streets of houses in different architectural styles and several courtyards. Babylon Berlin is the first project to be filmed here.

With the fifth season of Homeland (2015), the first international high-end series comes to Babelsberg. Subsequently, more and more productions are created for streaming services, including Berlin Station (2016-2019), Sense8 (2016), Counterpart (2017 – 2019) Dark (2017 – 2020) and 1899 (2021).

In 2018 , Potsdam is classified as MediaTech Hub. Volucap at Studio Babelsberg, the first volumetric capture studio on the European continent, is one of its flagships. The circular studio, equipped with 32 cameras, makes immersive VR and AR projects possible. Studio Babelsberg also co-produces Isle of Dogs , The Girl in the Spider’s Web and Charlie’s Angels .

In 2019 , Isle of Dogs is nominated for the Oscars in two categories. In the last 20 years, Studio Babelsberg productions received 48 nominations at the Academy Awards and were awarded a total of 15 Oscars in different categories.

In 2020 , two major international productions are successfully completed: Uncharted with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg and the fourth installment of the Matrix series, directed by Lana Wachowski. Studio Babelsberg names its largest sound stage (Stage 20) " Rainbow Stage " in honor of the filmmakers and LGBTQ+ activists Lana and Lilly Wachowski, sending a clear message for tolerance, respect and diversity.

In 2021 , DARK BAY Virtual Production Stage opens at Studio Babelsberg. It is one of Europe's largest permanently installed LED studios for virtual film production. The stage offers a 180.5-feet-circumference and a 23-feet-high LED wall consisting of 1470 state-of-the-art 2.3 LED panels, an LED ceiling and a worldwide unique ‘Revolving Stage’. Instead of the green/blue screen and a complex post-production process, digital backgrounds can now be created in advance as a 3D world and displayed on the LED wall in real time for filming. The Netflix series 1899 is the first project to be filmed in the studio.
