11 Ways to Travel Internationally For Free (Yes Free)

Posted on Published: March 15, 2022  - Last updated: March 4, 2023

Text reading 11 ways to internationally travel for free next to an image of a traveler dressed in white exploring a landscape.

Travel influencers make it seem like traveling well requires wealth, but it isn’t! With creativity, hard work, and hustle, it’s possible to travel internationally for free.

Although not for the faint of heart, it’s possible to journey around the world without spending a dime of your own money. Well, at least, no more than you’d spend staying home.

In this article, you’ll learn:

  • 11 ways to travel internationally for free
  • 1 popular method for free international travel that ethically is not an ok way to travel
  • and my thoughts on the best and worst routes to free international travel .

Keep reading to learn about 11 ways to take off on an international adventure without emptying your savings or running up debt.

Does free international travel sound too good to be true?

Some versions of it are. But if you are willing to compromise the finer points of travel and sacrifice some free time, it is possible to travel internationally for no cost.

Previously, I’ve written about choosing cheap European destinations, how to save money as a traveler , how to set a budget and stick with it while overseas, and how to make money while traveling . In this article, I will actually be sharing a few strategies for international travel for free.

Of course, nothing in life is ever completely free. Traveling for free generally means that you’ll be giving up your time, your skills, or a bit of your freedom instead of paying money to travel. Here are my 13 ways to travel the world for free.

A yellow suitcase in a hotel room

Become an English teacher

When I spent a month in Peru in 2019, I had the opportunity to get to know a fellow American living there permanently. She stayed in a village about an hour down the mountain from Machu Picchu , Ollaytaytambo, Peru .

From a small house near Peru’s Sacred Valley, she taught English to students in China. By teaching in a high cost of living location while living in a country with a low cost of living location, she saved money. Her income from teaching one English class each day was sufficient to fund her lifestyle as an ex-pat in Peru.

For recent college grads, teaching in another country is a great fit for many travelers who want to travel internationally for free. While you’ll still be responsible for some expenses, it’s easy and affordable to get a visa to teach English in many countries. Your employer will pay many of your travel expenses for you. You’ll have options to teach in person or virtually. Typically no special credentials are required.

Become a Pro at Using Travel Rewards

Many reward programs for credit cards are barely better than a scam – but some are legitimate. Though most of the time credit consumers are on the losing end of rewards cards, it’s not always a fact. Some consumers have spending patterns that can create incredible returns on travel rewards.

For example, if you’re a small business owner that buys massive quantities of widgets for resale, you might benefit from using a card with reward points. Consider making your inventory purchases by using a credit card with travel rewards. When cash flows, funneling spending through a rewards card can pay off.

Red Flags to Avoid:

  • getting random credit cards,
  • getting stuck with only one choice of airline to travel on,
  • allowing yourself to get into debt in over your head,
  • or opening too many accounts to manage well.

If you can handle your spending and payoffs with extreme responsibility, traveling free by using travel rewards may be possible.

Become a Nanny

Working as a nanny overseas usually is one of the best paying work opportunities for young adults who want to travel. Free housing and a small stipend are guaranteed. Other perks (like traveling with a family as they head out on vacations of their own), are often included.

Thousands of corporations house executives and their families overseas temporarily. Many of these working professionals seek au pairs and nannies to care for their children. American nannies are a top choice for child care for both temporary international residents and ex-pats (those who have chosen a more permanent relocation).

Au Pair World is a website where you can explore opportunities to travel for free as a child care worker.

TIP: To improve your chances of getting a great nanny gig overseas and traveling for free as a child care worker, invest in training. College classes in child development, a community college parenting class, or simply just first aid certification can help land your dream job.

An au pair pushes a stroller through a park.

Trade your House

If you’re a homeowner, one free way to travel internationally is through a house swap arrangement.

Various sites have popped up on the Internet in recent years allowing potential travelers to trade homes. People in one location view, select, and book a house swap with residents somewhere else in the world. Through this arrangement, you visit their house while they visit your house.

By traveling through house swapping, you can eliminate one of the biggest expenses of traveling: accommodations. It’s a pretty good way to travel internationally for nearly free- and you don’t have to work!

Unfortunately, this option is typically not a possibility for renters or people who own a home outside of a desirable tourist location.

Work your way around the globe

If you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and WWOOF (aka work as a farm laborer) or work in a hostel, you have options. It’s reasonably easy to get free housing, free food, and even free transportation by doing a work exchange.

In many nations, you need a work visa (these are a little tough to get) to get an actual job. However, working in exchange for logging lodging is often exempt- as is volunteering at a farm in exchange for room and board.

In almost any hostel around the world, you’ll find a twenty-something vagabond traveling internationally for free through the magic of work exchange.

Workaway.info is the go-to place for researching this type of travel and connecting with hosts.

Work for an international company

If you are a recent college graduate or a skilled consultant, you may be able to structure your next job hunt to support your travel. Be open to sacrificing a bit of pay or a few benefits to get your foot in the door with a company that will pay your on a few international trips each year.

Many companies that fly employees internationally for business trips are flexible on departure and return dates. For example, if they fly you out to consult with the team in Paris for a Monday through Friday week, they probably won’t mind if you return late. You might be able to book a return flight Sunday night instead of Friday evening. This practice allows you to stay somewhere cheap or free for a few days while exploring the city on your own time.

Consider the Military

During peacetime, the military can be an opportunity for travel for certain types of individuals. If you don’t mind extreme structure and physical intensity, joining the military can be an opportunity to see parts of the world you never would as a civilian.

With many other benefits, the military can be a free way to travel the world that works for some people.

Travel Free via Working for a Cruise Line

30 million people took cruises in 2019 1 , and the industry is expected to fully recover by 2025. Cruise ship companies constantly look for employees to live on the ship and work in food service, entertainment, hospitality, or specialty positions.

If you’re willing to sign on for months at sea, working for a cruise can be an incredible opportunity to see ports worldwide. Working on a cruise ship can be hard work and include cramped quarters and less than ideal food options for employees. However, the drawbacks can be outweighed by the opportunity to travel internationally for free while making friends and earning an income.

Think working on a cruise ship might be right for you? Check out a list of job descriptions commonly available on cruise ships.

Housesitting as a Way to Travel Free

Like house swapping, housesitting is growing in popularity as a way to travel internationally while eliminating the huge cost of lodging and accommodation. Through housesitting, you agree to care for someone’s home, pets, and plants in exchange for free housing. Sometimes, you also get a small stipend or other perks like free food.

Theoretically, housesitting sounds a great gig for international travelers, however, the daily schedule of caring for someone else’s pet, cleaning up its accidents while it stresses over its missing owner, and dealing with home-related emergencies when you’re the person in charge is actually a pretty easy way to ruin a vacation.

While I’ve written at length on how to get housesitting gigs in Seattle , I personally don’t recommend housesitting while traveling internationally due to the complications it adds to what could be a really freeing experience of travel.

Study Abroad to Enjoy Free International Travel

If you are still in school, or would like to return to school, consider a study abroad program. You can apply for scholarships to cover your costs. In many countries, including Norway, Sweden, and Germany, colleges are free and a number of English language courses are available.

While it’s difficult to complete an entire education in an international location where you don’t speak the primary language, it’s possible. Studying abroad can offer opportunities to meet people and see a different part of a country than you would experience simply by being a tourist.

The one way you absolutely     should not travel for free

There are many ways to travel internationally for free that are effective ways to partially or fully discount the cost of traveling, but there’s one method that I want to call out as not a good way to travel for free, and that is begging.

In a number of countries, particularly Southeast Asia, it’s not unusual to see a scruffy-looking Western backpacker crouched on a street corner holding a sign asking for money. These ostensibly wealthy by Southeast Asian standards beggers take money that might otherwise be given to locals with no choice but to live in abject poverty, and in a postcolonial world that’s not just a moral grey area, it’s very clearly wrong.

If you aren’t willing to work your way around the world and can’t afford to travel without begging strangers for money, you simply can’t afford to travel .

Final Thoughts on Traveling for Free

As you can see from this list, there are actually many opportunities to internationally travel for free. People who are willing to get creative about their employment and labor have many options!

In this list of ways to travel for free, I find the best options are:

  • providing childcare,
  • doing a work exchange,
  • or working on a cruise line.

Military, housesitting, and business travel fall last place on my personal list.

However, everyone’s goals, energy level, vocational life, and travel expectations are different! The free ways for international travel that work for some people won’t work for others, and that’s okay!

SWR announces free travel for forces personnel and veterans on Remembrance Sunday

Tray of Poppy Fund poppies

  • Service personnel and veterans will be eligible for free travel on SWR services to Remembrance Sunday events
  • The offer is available to anyone who is travelling in uniform or able to show an appropriate form of identification
  • Many SWR colleagues are former members of the armed services so supporting Remembrance events is important to the company

Serving military personnel and veterans attending local Remembrance Sunday events on Sunday 13 November can, once again, travel for free on all South Western Railway (SWR) services.

Serving personnel travelling to the Submariners’ Remembrance Service on Sunday 6 November or the main national commemoration at the Cenotaph in London on Sunday 13 will additionally be able to travel on any London bound SWR service for free on the day before the service, returning from London on the Sunday. Please note that there will be limited SWR services on Saturday 5 November due to industrial action and customers should check before travelling at  https://www.southwesternrailway.com/plan-my-journey

This offer, which is funded by the Department for Transport, is available to anyone who is travelling in uniform or able to show an appropriate form of identification.

This is our way of paying tribute to both current and previous generations of servicemen and women as many of our colleagues, including guards and drivers, are former members of the armed services. Our commitment to supporting Remembrance events demonstrates their significance for us.

Peter Williams, Commercial Director for South Western Railway, said:

“South Western Railway is glad that we are once again able to offer free travel to service personnel and veterans to attend Remembrance Sunday events. By making it easier for people to attend these events, we can help to honour the sacrifice made by so many of our servicemen and women. This initiative is particularly important to us as many of our SWR colleagues come from a service background” Further information:

To make use of the free travel offer, current serving personnel must be in uniform or present a current MOD90 Ministry of Defence-issued ID card. Veterans should present one of the following forms of ID:

  • Veterans Oyster Card
  • Ministry of Defence issued Veterans ID card
  • Any other form of identification showing the customer is a veteran (e.g. proof of pension)

Please note, this offer does not apply to companions/spouses or dependents.

Free nationwide rail travel for veterans and serving personnel attending services of remembrance

Military personnel and veterans attending services of remembrance will be able to travel to and from the events by train for free next month.

The offer will benefit people travelling to and from services anywhere in Britain on Remembrance Sunday on 12 November.

And veterans and serving personnel attending the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph can travel to any London terminal for free on Saturday 11 November or on the day itself – and be able to return home for free afterwards.

Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents train companies, said the offer is open to serving military personnel in uniform or who show a current Ministry of Defence-issued identity card.

Veterans can show a Veterans Railcard, a Veterans Oyster card or other proof of service such as a Ministry of Defence-issued Veterans ID card .

RDG chief executive Jacqueline Starr said: "Many of our great railway stations have memorials to the thousands of rail workers who gave their lives in the two world wars of the last century.

"During this period of reflection and remembrance, the rail industry is proud to help the service personnel of today – and those that have fought in more recent conflicts – travel to ceremonies up and down Britain as the nation gathers to remember those who have died serving our country."

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: "Remembrance Sunday is an important day of reflection across the country, honouring all of those who served our country with bravery and endeavour.

"It's right that our veterans and serving military personnel will have free rail travel to and from remembrance services across Great Britain.

"We remember the past sacrifices, but also think of – and thank – those who continue to defend our freedoms and protect our way of life."

Working in partnership with the Royal British Legion (RBL), the rail industry has also offered free travel to volunteers registered to raise money at official Poppy Day events in London on 2 November and Manchester on 9 November if they produce their RBL-issued ID.

Andy Taylor-Whyte, Poppy Appeal director for the RBL, said: "We are delighted that train companies recognise the significance of Remembrance, and the RBL is extremely grateful for the offer of free transport for veterans and service personnel.

"It will allow the men and women of our Armed Forces community to mark this occasion without worrying about additional cost.

"It is also a huge benefit that our wonderful volunteers can travel for free, allowing them to collect for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal at both London Poppy Day (2 Nov) and Manchester Poppy Day (9 Nov).

"Our City Poppy Days offer the public a unique opportunity to interact with service personnel and veterans and help us to raise vital funds to support members of the Armed Forces community. It will also allow the public to get hold of our newly designed plastic-free poppies across London and Manchester," he added.

MOD ID card example 180219 CREDIT MOD.jpg

Veterans or serving personnel taking part in other Remembrance-related events earlier in November may also be able to travel for free and should contact the train company they plan to use.

Network Rail is due to undertake planned engineering works on some lines on 11 and 12 November and those intending to travel are asked to check in advance whether their planned journey will be affected.

Poppy sellers fundraising at the official London appeal on 2 November will be able to travel to the capital for free on 1 or 2 November and from London on 2 or 3 November.

Those raising funds at the official Manchester event on 9 November can travel to the city for free on the day or on 8 November. They can also enjoy free travel out of Manchester on 9 or 10 November.

Even those unable to make their way to the city will still be able to take advantage of the free travel, which will be offered on trains, buses, ferries and light rail across the State.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said the ceremony will be held outside NSW Parliament House from 12.30pm, with the event involving an Australian Defence Force Guard, the NSW Police Force band performing the Royal and Australian anthems, a NSW Police Mounted Unit and a 21-Gun Salute from Government House Sydney.

He said the event was an opportunity for everyone to take part in the historic occasion.

“While out State and Nation, and the Commonwealth of Nations continue to mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, it is fitting that we celebrate the accession of His Majesty King Charles the Third,” Mr Perrottet said.

Guests joining the premier at the event will include the Chief Justice of NSW Andrew Bell, NSW Governor Margaret Beazley, NSW ministers, MPs and Labor leader Chris Minns.

Transport Minister David Elliott said waiving bus and train tickets would give all residents the chance to attend the historic ceremony.

However, travel will also be free across regional NSW.

“The unique way in which our Constitutional Monarchy enshrines the rights of the people means that it’s only appropriate for everyone to be given the chance to attend the Proclamation,” Mr Elliott said.

A proclamation occurs when a new Sovereign takes over the throne after his or her predecessor dies.

The successor is proclaimed as soon as possible at an Accession Council in London.

The proclamation ceremony for His Majesty King Charles III, will take place outside NSW Parliament House from 12.30pm on Sunday, with the general public invited to view the event from Macquarie Street.

Preceding the ceremony, NSW Governor Margaret Beazley will preside at a meeting of the Executive Council where she will receive formal advice from the Premier and Ministers that King Charles III be proclaimed King of Australia.

Operation Commander, Superintendent Anthony Bell, said extra police resources will be deployed to ensure a safe and secure environment for those who will be attending both event locations.

“We will be working closely with other agencies to ensure the free-flow of vehicular, pedestrian and commuter traffic around the event and across the Sydney CBD.

“With large crowds expected to gather at the floral tribute site and in Macquarie Street, we will be deploying general and specialist resources to ensure the safety of community members attending these events,” Superintendent Anthony Bell said.

As the State and nation mourn the passing of Her Late Majesty, her image will continue to be displayed on the sails of the Sydney Opera House each night for the full national mourning period.

Tips for seniors for reducing the cost of travel

On this page:

Free travel vouchers, metropolitan travel, travel in regional victoria, other ways to cut your travel costs, travelling outside of victoria, other money-saving travel tips.

  • Find out about the transport benefits you receive as a Seniors Card holder, such as free travel vouchers and free weekend travel between two adjacent zones.
  • Cut your travel costs within and outside Victoria with the various hints and tips given below.

Your Victorian Seniors Card means you can enjoy discounted travel in Victoria and Australia-wide.

  • Every Seniors Card holder receives free off-peak travel vouchers to use on public transport in Victoria.
  • Register for your free vouchers at the PTV website www.ptv.vic.gov.au/vouchers External Link
  • Each voucher can be exchanged for either: a V/Line off-peak daily ticket (going out and back on the same day); two V/Line off-peak single tickets (going out on one day and back on another); a 1 Day Travel Pass for travel in Zones 1 and 2.

From 1 November 2022, the Department of Transport is introducing more booking options to make it easier to redeem your free travel and visiting a station during opening hours to redeem your voucher for a ticket is no longer the only option.

  • From 1 November 2022 Vouchers will be held electronically so you can choose to redeem vouchers at a staffed station or V/Line agent, or over the phone via the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) call centre.
  • You can choose to collect your ticket from a station or agent prior to travel or call 10 business days in advance and have your ticket posted to you.
  • And in 2023, you will also be able to redeem your vouchers online.
  • Phone 1800 800 007 or visit the PTV website www.ptv.vic.gov.au External Link for more information or to make V/Line reservations. V/Line tickets are subject to availability at off-peak times.
  • With a seniors myki you travel free on the weekend within one or two consecutive zones on all metropolitan trains, trams and buses – this includes to outlying metropolitan areas as far as Sunbury and Melton.
  • During the week, you can still access discounted rates at all times on all routes with your seniors myki.
  • If you take a trip in non-consecutive zones, or a trip of more than two zones, a fare for the whole trip will be charged.

Consider travelling by public transport in off-peak periods. It's less crowded and you still get a great discount with your Seniors Card.

  • Travel free on the weekends on V/Line commuter rail services when using myki for trips of one or two consecutive zones (for example, Woodend to Gisborne).
  • At other times, V/Line offers concession rates for Seniors Card holders through regional Victoria.
  • Take advantage of off-peak rates during quieter times.
  • Phone 1800 800 007 for more information or to pre-book tickets.
  • The V/Line website lists all its fares and routes www.vline.com.au External Link .
  • You can also travel free on regional town bus networks over the weekend in major regional cities such as Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Mildura and Warrnambool. On regional town buses where myki is not operating, show your Victorian Seniors Card to travel free on weekends.

Myki works like an electronic purse for public transport. You have to top up the card’s balance whenever it runs low on funds.

The seniors myki offers discounted rates at all times on all routes. You pay no more than the seniors daily cap (zones 1 & 2) when you travel on weekdays.

How do I get a seniors myki?

New Seniors Card program applicants receive a seniors myki for free with their Seniors Card posted with a Welcome pack.

Seniors Business Discount Card holders are not eligible to receive a free Seniors myki card upon joining the program.

Once you have your seniors myki, you should register it. There are many benefits to registering your myki, including free card replacement card if it's lost or stolen. For more information on how to register, visit the Public Transport Victoria website External Link

And you can top it up at:

  • Hundreds of shops including all 7-Eleven stores.
  • Premium Stations as listed on the PTV website External Link .
  • From myki machines at selected train stations and stops.
  • Mobile myki app using your Android smartphone. For more information visit the PTV website. External Link
  • Online at PTV website External Link .
  • By calling PTV on 1800 800 007.

sunday free travel

Remember - it's a condition that you carry your Seniors Card at all times when travelling on public transport as proof of your concession entitlement.

Replacement myki

Like many other cards, myki cards do expire, so keep track of your card’s expiry date. If your myki is registered and you have an online account – find your card expiry date online. If your myki is not registered, check the expiry date at a myki machine, myki check, or by calling 1800 800 007.

Even if you're travelling for free on the weekend, on myki-enabled services you must touch on and off as normal - you won't be charged.

  • All metropolitan trains are wheelchair accessible and low-floor trams and buses are available on some routes. Most V/Line trains and coaches can be accessed by wheelchairs. More information on accessible transport is available from PTV on 1800 800 007 or www.ptv.vic.gov.au External Link .

Contact Yarra Trams 1800 800 007 or visit www.yarratrams.com.au External Link to find out more.
  • Cars can be expensive to maintain and keep on the road. If you’ve got easy access to public transport, why not sell your car?

  • Check if your travel company offers discounts to Seniors Card holders.
  • Travelling outside school holidays is always cheaper and travelling late at night or taking a longer route can be cheaper too – especially with flights. Consider going during the week instead of on the weekend or taking flights with stopovers.
  • ‘Shoulder season’ – the time just before or after the peak holiday season – is a cheaper time to travel. The weather is still generally good in destination cities and there are fewer tourists.
  • On most budget airlines you can avoid a baggage fee by only travelling with carry-on luggage.
  • Cruise and tour companies often offer discounted rates close to the departure date. Try searching online for ‘cruises’ and ‘last-minute’ or ‘discount’.

Take a low-cost holiday with family or friends in regional Victoria or Melbourne by using your free travel vouchers and staying somewhere that offers a Seniors Card Discount. If you're on Seniors Online, choose the 'Accommodation' category in the Discount Directory .

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Day trip to Suzdal from Moscow: transport, sights, maps and tips

sunday free travel

 DAY TRIP TO SUZDAL

Suzdal is one of the most popular destinations on the Golden Ring and the whole city is often described as an open-air museum.  The city has no railway station and practically no heavy industry, meaning that is has preserved its provincial charm and a great deal of architectural monuments.

sunday free travel

From Moscow, Suzdal is not as easy to get to as Sergiev Posad (the closest Golden Ring city to the capital) but it is worth going the extra distance as Suzdal provides more of a contrast from Moscow.  If you make use of high-speed trains it is possible and not too demanding to visit for even just a day, but of course spending the night there is recommended to soak in the atmosphere or to combine it with a visit to neighbouring Vladimir.  As the city is a very popular tourist destination you will have no problem finding a cafe or guesthouse there.  There is practically no public transport in the city, but the city is small and most sights are located relatively close to each other.

Getting There and Back

Via Vladimir

sunday free travel

Direct to Suzdal

Buses directly to Suzdal leave from Moscow’s Schyolkovsky Bus Station.  There are about 9 buses a day and it takes around 4½ hours depending on traffic.  The buses stop at Vladimir too.  Using this option will mean a rather exhausting day trip.

Orientation and Main Sights

sunday free travel

Suzdal is a relatively small city and it is not difficult to walk around the city to see most of the sights.

Suzdal

The main road in the city is Ulitsa Lenina which runs north across the whole city.

Suzdal

The main sights of Suzdal are located either on or just off this road, including the two main sights: the Suzdal Kremlin in the south and the Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in the north.

Suzdal

More information about Suzdal can be found on our Suzdal  pages.

sunday free travel

Suzdal is famous for its medovukha (mead) which is an alcoholic drink made out of honey.  It can be drunk either hot or cold, meaning it perfect in both summer and winter, and you will find it on practically every menu in the city.  There are various flavours of the drink available and even a non-alcoholic version.  In addition to medovukha, you can find all traditional Russian souvenirs in the city and there is a big souvenir market on Torgovaya Ploschad.
