Unsanitary Sailboat, Downgraded and Shortened Trip, Unorganized Tour Guide, Inappropriate and Rude Crew, Horrible Customer Service

***I do not recommend traveling with Topdeck or on the Moja Maja sailboat to any traveler for numerous reasons:*** 1. Our ship was downgraded last-minute. I purchased Sail and Swim: Croatia Plus (Leonardo). Topdeck downgraded our ship to an inferior ship, the Moja Maja. T***, a team leader, and G**, our tour guide, did not provide a specific reason. 2. My cabin on the sailboat was infested with bedbugs. I had 30+ bites on my body. 3. My health was severely compromised. Without my permission, the crew sprayed bedbug poison in my first cabin with my belongings in it and in my second cabin. I was forced to sleep in the second cabin that was sprayed the same day with bedbug poisoning, which was severely hazardous to my health. 4. The second cabin was awful and unsanitary. It had no window shades. I had to hang a towel to cover the window for privacy and to sleep. The soap dispenser in the bathroom did not work. I was provided with no blankets. Bugs, other than bedbugs, were in the bathroom. 5. The crew denied me access to my belongings. I could not work on my laptop, causing me to lose over $11,000. I could not charge my mobile phone, not allowing me to use it for work, pictures, videos, and ridesharing appropriately. Because I did not have my contact lenses, I could not see properly. Since I did not have my toiletries, I was forced to purchase toiletries at a grocery store. 6. My belongings were destroyed by the bedbug poisonings. I had to throw out about 95% of my belongings (luggage, backpack, clothes, toiletries, supplies, supplements, etc.), totaling over $10,000. 7. The tour was shortened and limited, not as scheduled or promised. Our tour was limited because of the schedule changes. We were unable to visit some of the sites and experience some activities. We could not fully experience Croatia. 8. The food was subpar, and the dishware was unsanitary. For breakfast, the eggs were not fully cooked, and the sausages were overcooked. The coffee tasted awful and had grounds in it. The water glasses were dirty. For lunch and dinner, the soups were broth with no contents. For the optional barbecue, the meat was inedible, having pieces of bone and excessive fat. Also, the sailboat ran out of supplies, including some non-alcoholic drinks. 9. The tour guide was unorganized and cared only about herself. G**, the tour guide, consistently provided the daily schedule significantly late, sometimes after lunchtime. She did not help me communicate with Topdeck about my situation. 10. The crew cared only about themselves and their business and were unprofessional. When she was notified of the bedbugs, the captain was upset and made me feel horrible about the situation. When I showed her the bedbugs I caught and placed in tissues, she became quite angry, crushed the tissues with the bedbugs, and littered, throwing the tissues into the sea. She yelled in a language I did not understand, making me feel like a burden. Some of the crew partied with the clients at a club until around 4:00 a.m., which is quite unprofessional and inappropriate. 11. Topdeck has poor customer service and only cares about its revenues, not about its clients. During the trip, I called Topdeck. I explained the situation to T***, a team leader. She said she would call me back with a remedy. She did not call me back. If you have a problem during a trip, Topdeck will wait to contact you back with a "remedy" until your trip is finished to attempt to use you finishing the trip as a reason not to properly remedy the situation. Topdeck will have no sympathy or empathy for your poor experiences and insult you with laughable "remedies." After the trip, I spoke with S*****, a customer experience manager, and C******, the general manager. Based on our conversations, Topdeck's primary concern is generating revenue not providing a positive client experience.

Topdeck customer service is poor

Topdeck customer service is poor. They do not accommodate you if cancellations are made due to weather- you are left to cover this expense. They book you cheap and dirty hotels that are not worth the cost of the tour. You can do the same itinerary for half the price and have an enjoyable comfortable stay in decent hotels. Rip off!!!

Beautiful places ….

If it weren’t for the beautiful places I’m visiting on this tour, I would be having one of the worst experiences ever. Don’t get me wrong, I’m used to being a solo traveller, but when you feel like you’re being deliberately left out … it’s an issue. An issue that I shouldn’t have when I’m on a group tour! I particularly dislike having to spend solo days because it’s impossible not to feel left out. This tour has been particularly unkind which is a shame because the places I’ve been and experiences Ive had ( galleries, museums etc) are some of the best in the world. I just think they missed the mark .,,.. once you feel left out it’s exceptionally hard to feel anything else.

Unscrupulous and uncaring company

My daughter had a holiday booked for June with Topdeck. This was cancelled due to coronavirus and she is being told that they have retrospectively changed their terms of business so she cannot have a refund, just a travel voucher. She has been laid off from work and badly needs her money back but Topdeck seemed unconcerned with the emotional and financial pain they are causing their customers. My daughter was not asked to agree to the new terms, which are against all guidance from various travel bodies. Topdeck is an unscrupulous and uncaring company.

Never again!

I booked the Hawaii tour for April which have now been cancelled due to Corona They are refusing to provide me with a refund even when it is a clear breach of their terms and conditions and just keep regurgitating the same information when I contacted them They are taking advantage at a time like this

Amazing Experience!

I booked my first Topdeck tour a few months ago to travel as a solo female to New Zealand. It was one of the best trips I have ever been on. The itinerary was thoughtful, the guides were fun and knowledgeable, and it was a great crew. It would have been extremely difficult for me to see as many places as I did if I had rented a car and driven on my own. Will definitely book again!

LIED ABOUT GUARANTEED REFUNDS COVID19

I am extremely disappointed in Topdeck. My first ever trip a few years ago was amazing that I convinced my friend to go on a Europe tour with me in April. Before international travel was even banned I chased up topdeck for weeks asking what would happen if it was cancelled. They sent me a message saying it most likely wouldn’t be cancelled but on the off chance that it was I would get a full refund. Two days later they cancelled all April trips. I am now being told that won’t be honoured even though I showed them the message. This is absolutely disgusting and appalling to think a company can be this heartless during a crisis like this and go back on their word. Not only did they cancel our trip and won’t refund us. If we accept the voucher we have a limited time to use it and we have to pay extra for any difference in price. We have no job so no income, and all our savings went into this trip which topdeck now won’t refund us.

People giving negative feedback because of covid haven't even been on tour.

Just been on tour without any issues. The reviews about covid don't reflect the quality of tours actually happening. 😎

About Topdeck

Topdeck is a collective of explorers who are devoted to travel, we strive to open minds, shift perspectives, learn new things and make a difference. We build epic group trips for 18 to 30 somethings and our passion is to inspire young people through life-changing travel experiences. With over 46 years’ experience, our business is to make travel dreams a reality, we know what works and we’re not afraid to shout about it. We offer variety, comfort and value for money, and promise a hassle-free holiday, loaded with authentic local experiences. With loads of free time to explore, heaps of included meals, access to some amazing bucket list activities and the opportunity to meet a whole bunch of like-minded young travellers, Topdeck trips are way more than your average package tour. They’re the experience of a lifetime. We build the trips. You build the memories. So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure? Topdeck’s the only choice!

Started by friends in 1973 who shared a passion for adventure, Topdeck Travel has a long history of delivering authentic and fun group travel. Originally transport was provided by double decker buses, which gave way to the name Topdeck. From 1974 onwards, and even into the 1990s, these ‘deckers’ (double decker buses) travelled throughout Europe and even further afield in to Morocco, the Middle East, and sometimes making the extended trip between London and Kathmandu.

During the 1980s, the company decided it would move further afield into the United States of America, where it started operations. The company even ran trips from Sydney to London from 1980 onwards, with the last leg using a converted Sydney double decker to stay in theme. Later on it was decided to introduce coaches, and then this happened in the mid 1980’s, it was primarily for the winter ski holidays. This marked the end of the old double deckers, with the 1990’s marking the start of retirement for them in great numbers.

Once this happened, the focus shifted towards camping trips, staying in various campsites across Europe. After this, Topdeck started to take shape as the company we know it today, offering camping, hostel based trips, and even trips with hotel accommodation. one of the original Topdeck double decker buses can still be seen to this day at the Isle of Wight Bus Museum, which is near Newport, Isle of Wight.

Questions & Answers

What is the gorilla & chimp excursion permit.

The excursion to the Ugandan jungle to witness rare mountain gorillas is entirely optional, but due to admirable conservation efforts being made to ensure the gorillas' survival, only a limited number of gorilla permits are available per day. These permits must be pre-booked and paid in advance. Please be aware that no company can reserve permits in bulk and they are assigned on a first-come basis. Included in the permit cost is an excursion to track chimpanzees in their natural habitat at Kyambura Gorge, another unforgettable African wildlife encounter. Please contact us for details on this trip.

How to get to the departure point?

Flights are not included in the tour package, but please contact us and we may be able to offer some advice on how to get to the starting point of your Topdeck tour.

Is solo traveller allowed on the trip?

Yes, many Topdeck passengers travel alone. They don't charge compulsory single supplements – instead they'll match you up with roommates of the same sex.

What kinds of people will be on the trip?

Topdeck travellers come from all over the world and are aged between 18 and 39.

What is average group size on the trip?

Since late bookings and cancellations do occur, there isnt a way to know exactly how many people will be on your trip. Popular itineraries during peak summer season usually have 25-45 passengers. In the event of smaller groups, a modified passenger van may be used to improve logistics, as well as creating a better group dynamic.

What is the inclusion on the trip?

Each trip includes coach transport, ferry transfers (where applicable), accommodation, meals, National Park Fees, sightseeing tours and some entry fees.

What time does the trip start?

It depends on the trip and departure city. Meeting times are generally between 07:30 – 08:30 on the morning of departure. On some trips, you will join the group in the evening and will spend that night in the joining city; in these situations, there will be a mandatory Welcome Meeting with your Trip Leader at a set time.

What location does the trip depart from for North America tours?

The departure points for Topdeck's North America trips will be at the joining accommodation and varies depending on the departure city. It will also be provided in your pre-departure documentation.

What currency should I bring for my Egypt for Middle East trip?

There are numerous cash machines in all of the starting cities in the region, plus all of the cities and major towns so local currency is easily available. You may wish to bring a small amount of US$ or GBP cash just in case of an emergency. Please also make sure to notify your bank of your travel plans before you head off!

What are the recommended things to bring on the trip?

Lightweight cottons and linens are recommended for the summer with some warmer clothing needed for winter. For trips in Egypt which include felucca sailing, it's important that you bring a sleeping bag with you. Make sure you bring a swimming costume for summer departures.

What are the kinds of transportation that Topdeck use?

In Egypt, Topdeck use coaches and mini-buses which are modern, air-conditioned and comfortable. At times, they use 1st class train services (overnight service) to cover the longer journeys from Cairo to Aswan and Luxor to Cairo (recliner seats). The method of transport being used on your trip (train or coach) is normally advised at the briefing meeting on Day 1. Certain trips also feature transport on 5-star luxury cruise boats or traditional felucca boats on the Nile. In Jordan, Israel and Morocco Topdeck use comfy, air-conditioned mini coaches with experienced local drivers.

Is there an option on learning to dive on the trip?

Yes, Topdeck offers ""Learn to Dive"" trip in Egypt for those who want to learn to scuba dive. Learn to Dive stays in Dahab on the Red Sea, famously known as one of the best diving spots in the world. All equipment (with the exception of the dive manual) is included in the trip price. If you are an experienced diver and need a refresher course, these can be booked for an additional USD$30. Guided dives are also available for passengers who already have an Open Water Licence and have been for a dive within the last six months (additional costs apply for this).

Is it possible to extend my stay?

Please contact us for details. Our 24/7 customer support is happy to assist you with bookings and other tour information.

What are the guidelines for existing medical conditions?

Please get in touch with us and we can definitely assist you in providing the information to the tour operator.

What is recommended if a traveller is on a special diet?

For special dietary requirements e.g. vegetarian or vegan, Topdeck will make every endeavour to cater for the travellers specific needs. However in some places it is not possible to obtain certain special foods, and the availability is not guaranteed. Please contact us for more information and we can certainly discuss your options.
