Start and finish times

What can you expect from the 2024 tour de france.

This year's race should be an exciting battle for overall victory, with four potential winners all vying for the maillot jaune. Reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike), Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) and Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) are the men most likely, although newly-anointed Giro d'Italia champion Pogačar is the only rider to have come through the early season unscathed. The other three have missed training time after tangling with each other in the same crash in Itzulia Basque Country in April.

Vingegaard was the worst affected , and in early June there was still a question mark over whether he would definitely be at the Tour de France, but he was announced on the start list the week before the race.

There are plenty of sprinting opportunities scattered throughout the race. Last year's green jersey Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will be the man to beat, pushed hard others including Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich-PostNL). Many eyes will also be on Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), who returns for his last Tour de France in the hope of finally beating the all-time 35-stage-win record that he is currently tied on with Eddy Merckx.

The final stage sees the race make way for the Paris Olympic Games and finish outside the capital for the first time in history, with a time trial from Monaco to Nice.

Check out our page on the Tour de France 2024 route for everything you need to know about the 21 stages from Florence to Nice, and look at our almost complete start list for the race .

After cutting his teeth on local and national newspapers, James began at Cycling Weekly as a sub-editor in 2000 when the current office was literally all fields.

Eventually becoming chief sub-editor, in 2016 he switched to the job of full-time writer, and covers news, racing and features.

A lifelong cyclist and cycling fan, James's racing days (and most of his fitness) are now behind him. But he still rides regularly, both on the road and on the gravelly stuff.

Tour de France 2023: How to Watch a Free Livestream

Your guide to watching the 110th edition of the world's most famous bike race, including all the teams, stages and full schedule.

tour de france live youtube

Three grueling weeks of calf-destroying climbs and tense sprints await the world's best riders as the 110th Tour de France gets underway this weekend.

Kicking off with the Grand Départ, which takes place this year in Bilbao, Spain, the route makes its way across Basque Country before heading up the Pyrenees, across the Massif Central and eventually concluding on the cheering streets of Paris.

This year's tour is once again being billed as a rematch between defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (on the Jumbo-Visma team) and two-time winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) as the great rivals go head-to-head for the third year in a row.

Pogačar is battling back from a broken wrist sustained two months ago, while last year's Giro d'Italia champion Jai Hindley and Ineos Grenadiers star Egan Bernal will both be looking to wrestle away the iconic yellow jersey.

Veteran British sprinter Mark Cavendish will be attempting to claim the record for most Tour stage wins, with the Astana Qazaqstan ace currently level with Belgian legend Eddy Merckx on 34.

Below, we'll outline the best  live TV streaming services  to use to watch the the Tour de France live wherever you are in the world.

How to watch the Tour de France online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the Tour locally, you may need a different way to watch the world's greatest cyclists -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our  Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Australia, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming Tour de France 2023 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming the Tour de France live may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the game after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .

Watch tour de france 2024: preview.

It is time for the second Grand Tour of the year and, for most cycling fans, the Tour de France 2024, is the big one. However, there is some shift from tradition this year. The Grand Départ is in Florence and the finish in Nice, not Paris.

We are in for a brutal battle for the Yellow Jersey. The field includes Carlos Rodríguez and Egan Bernal leading the Ineos Grenadiers and Jonas Vingegaard of Team Visma - Lease a Bike. He's a back-to-back winner of this legendary race, having won in 2022 and 2023. Can he make it a hat-trick?

It's Tadej Pogacar who they'll all be trying to keep pace with though. The Slovenian has already won the Giro d’Italia this season. Can he become the first rider to do the double since Marco Pantani in 1998?

And there's no need to leave these questions hanging. You can watch the Tour de France 2024 for yourself with every stage available to stream free. Read on for how to watch the Tour de France live streams from anywhere and all the TV channel and cable-free options you'll need for this three-week feast of cycling.

How to watch a FREE Tour de France live stream

If you're from any of the countries listed above but you're abroad right now, don't worry about missing out on that free coverage. All you need to do is subscribe to a VPN to watch a free Tour de France live stream and re-connect to your home streaming coverage.

How to watch Tour de France 2024 from outside your country

Today at the Tour de France 2024

After three weeks of amazing cycling, this is the final stage of the Tour de France 2024. Due to the Olympics, it's not the traditional ride into Paris, but an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice. It's a 33.7km course with one category two climb towards the start. Today will be the final time we see record stage winner Sir Mark Cavendish ride in the Tour de France.

Barring catastrophe, Tadej Pogacar will become the eighth man, and the first since Marco Pantani in 1998, to win the Giro and the Tour de France in the same year. He put in yet another stunning performance in the mountains yesterday, breaking the resistance of Jonas Vingegaard on the final climb. He has now picked up five stage wins and don't bet against him claiming a sixth. Richard Carapaz is set to be crowned King of the Mountains after his brilliant finish to the race. Biniam Girmay will win the Green Jersey.

How to watch Tour de France: Live stream final stages free from anywhere

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

The 111th Tour de France is almost over, with just two stages left in the competition. We've compiled everything you need to know about how to watch the Tour de France, including global free streaming options for the 2024 race.

The race kicked off in Italy this year before heading to France, where the cyclists are finishing up the final few stages of the lengthy competition. The winner, the rider with the shortest combined times after completing all 21 stages, will be crowned on July 21. In a massive shake-up from tradition, the race will conclude in Nice rather than Paris. And rather than a leisurely final stage, the competitors will duke it out in one last time trial. This could give the opportunity for a potential last-minute upset, depending on how close the competition is going into Stage 21.

Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar is currently in the lead. Pogacar won the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021, but Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard was the victor in 2022 and 2023. Vingegaard, who suffered a major crash earlier this year that left him hospitalized, has held his own in the race and has sped past Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel to the no. 2 general ranking. The next two days will see if Vingegaard can make up the time and beat Pogacar or if the latter can pull off a second Grand Tour win this year after his victory at the Giro d'Italia in May.

Below, we've outlined all of the ways you can live stream the Tour de France. We'll keep this page updated with start times for every stage of the tournament.

Short for virtual private networks, VPNs allow people to temporarily change their device's virtual location so that they can access their usual websites from anywhere. VPNs are especially popular among people looking to boost their online privacy and keep up with all their apps while traveling abroad.

What is the route of the Tour de France?

While the Tour's route changes each year, the 2024 Tour de France starts in Florence, Italy and finishes in Nice, France on July 21.

How does scoring work for the Tour de France?

Riders starts each stage of the race together, but earn points for their placement in various stages and for winning intermediate sprints. The leader wears a green jersey, which has become a symbol of the points classification competition, which is a secondary competition that awards points to riders for their stage finishes and intermediate sprint victories.

The winner of the Tour de France is the rider with the shortest overall combined time of every stage of the race.  The 2024 Tour de France will feature an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice as the final stage.

Tour de France 2023 live streams: How to watch for free, channels, schedule and more

Is the Tour de France all about Pogačar vs Vingegaard?

(L-R) Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia and UAE Team Emirates - White Best Young Rider Jersey, Jonas Vingegaard Rasmussen of Denmark and Team Jumbo - Visma - Yellow Leader Jersey and Chris Hamilton of Australia and Team DSM compete during the Tour de France live stream

FREE Tour de France live streams

Tour de france live streams around the world.

  • Start times

You'll be able to watch the Tour de France online, no matter where you go — so you can follow the titans of the tires. Stage 19 just completed, and saw Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) take the win in an amazing phtoo-finish.

Read on and we'll show you how to watch Tour de France from anywhere with a VPN , and potentially for FREE .

Tour de France continues through July 23 — full schedule below ► U.K. — ITVX (FREE) ► Australia — SBS on Demand (FREE) ►  U.S. — Peacock , NBC and USA Network ►  Watch anywhere — Try ExpressVPN 100% risk free

It's the biggest race of them all, but these days, the Tour de France means one thing: Tadej Pogačar vs Jonas Vingegaard. Between them the duo have won the last three editions of the race, with Vingegaard taking the 2022 race for Team Jumbo–Visma and Pogačar winning in 2020 and 2021.

In the most recent action, Vingegaard left Pogačar in the dust, gaining six minutes on his rival in the final climb. Pogačar called it "one of the worst days of my life on the bike."

Vingegaard is still in the lead, and fended off some anti-doping questions at the end of Stage 19. Two more stages remain, and Pogačar is still in second, with Adam Yates is in third.

Here's how to watch Tour de France live streams online, from anywhere.

If you live in the U.K., Australia, France, Italy, Spain or Belgium, then you can look forward to a FREE Tour de France live stream in 2023.

That's because the free-to-air ITV4 and its ITVX streaming service in the U.K., SBS and SBS on Demand streaming service in Australia, France.TV in France, Rai Play in Italy, Teledeporte in Spain, and RTBF in Belgium all have rights to the action.

But what if you're based in one of those countries but aren't at home to catch that free Tour de France coverage? Maybe you're on holiday and don't want to spend money on pay TV in another country, when you'd usually be able to watch for free at home?

Don't worry — you can watch it via a VPN instead. We'll show you how to do that below.

It's only natural that you might want to watch a Tour de France live stream from your home country, but what if you're not there when the race is on?

Look no further than a VPN, or virtual private network. A VPN makes it look as if you're surfing the web from your home country, rather than the one you're in. That means you can access the streaming services you already pay for, from anywhere on Earth. Or anywhere that has an internet connection, at least.

For instance, a Brit who's currently in the U.S. could watch Tour de France live streams on ITVX , even though they're not in the U.K.

They're totally legal, inexpensive and easy to use. We've tested lots of the best VPN services and our favorite right now is ExpressVPN . It's fast, works on loads of devices and even offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Image

Safety, speed and simplicity combine to make ExpressVPN our favorite VPN service. It's also compatible with loads of devices and there's a 30-day money-back guarantee if you want to try it out.

Using a VPN is incredibly simple.

1. Install the VPN of your choice . As we've said, ExpressVPN is our favorite.

2. Choose the location you wish to connect to in the VPN app. For instance if you're in the U.S. and want to view a British service, you'd select U.K. from the list.

3. Sit back and enjoy the action. Head to ITVX or another website and watch Tour de France.

How to watch Tour de France live streams in the US

US flag

If you're in the U.S. you have a few options for watching Tour de France. The entire race is on Peacock . However, stage 1 is also on NBC , and stage 3 is on USA Network .

NBC can be accessed with one of the best TV antennas , while USA Network is available in some cable packages.

If you've cut the cord and don't have cable, you can watch Tour de France via several live TV services, including NBC's own Peacock , plus Sling TV and Fubo .

Of these options, we recommend Peacock: It costs just $4.99/month with ads, or $9.99 without, and includes lots more great content in addition to Tour de France live streams.

If you go the Sling TV route, you'll want Sling Blue, which is $45 per month and comes with more than 40 channels, including NBC (in select regions) and USA Network. And right now, Sling is offering $25 off your first month .

Fubo, meanwhile, costs $75 per month for 161 channels, including NBC and USA network. Sports fans will find a number of niche sports channels among its lineup.

Peacock

In addition to showing Tour de France live streams, Peacock also has a huge library of originals and licensed content drawn from various brands. That includes shows like Yellowstone , Law and Order, the Real Housewives and more.

Sling TV

Sling TV includes both NBC and USA network in its Blue plan, which comes with 40-plus channels. Right now, new subscribers get $25 off their first month .

Fubo

If you love sports, you might want to check out Fubo . It's got dozens of sports channels, including NBC and USA Network. Check it out with their 7-day free trial .

If you already use those services but aren't in the U.S. right now, you can watch Tour de France live streams by using a good cycling VPN . And if, for whatever reason, you can't get it working, do remember that you have the comfort of a 30-day money-back guarantee with ExpressVPN.

How to Watch the 2023 Tour de France—and Who Might Win

From cable TV to live streaming, here are your options for watching the 2023 Tour, plus details about riders to watch.

109th tour de france 2022 stage 21

The 2023 Tour de France begins on Saturday, July 1, 2023 in the Spanish Basque region, with a hilly 182K road race through the steep hills around Bilbao. So it’s time to start planning how you’re going to watch it.

Whether that means streaming from your phone, starting your morning with the previous day’s highlights, or inviting your friends over for a viewing party, the options for watching the Tour de France are plentiful.

For the Fanatics

In general, NBC offers the most accessible and affordable (and legal) options for American viewers to watch the Tour de France through its Peacock Premium streaming service for $4.99 a month. For ad-free coverage you’ll need a subscription to Peacock Premium Plus, which runs $9.99 a month. (Eligible Comcast Xfinity X1 and Flex customers and Cox Contour customers may already access Peacock Premium for free.)

You could cancel your subscription at the end of the Tour, but consider this: by subscribing to Peacock Premium or Peacock Premium Plus you’ll also have access to the full men’s and women’s Tours as well as other races covered by NBC and its partners, including the 2023 Vuelta a España and next year’s editions of Paris-Nice and Paris-Roubaix .

109th tour de france 2022 stage 4

The Peacock app is available on Roku, Apple devices, Android and AndroidTV devices, Google platforms, Chromecast, Xbox devices, Playstation 4 and 4 Pro, VIZIO SmartCast TVs, and LG Smart TVs. You can also watch online via the Peacock website.

If you have a good cable package and prefer conventional viewing on your television, you’re in luck: NBC will offer the race to cable subscribers via the USA Network and CNBC. Live coverage often starts around 7 a.m. ET, so 9-to-5ers will likely need to record each stage and watch later. (Check the full schedule for details.)

No Cable? No Problem.

If you don’t have cable and want more than what’s offered on the NBC app, a subscription to FuboTV costs $70 per month. Add the $12 per month cycling package you’ll have full access to NBC’s coverage of the race. Fubo’s also great for those who love cycling year round, as FuboTV has a full-time cycling channel covering the major Tours, the Classics, some world championship events, and even BMX racing. (It’s also available in Canada.) If you’ve been looking for a streaming service that offers most if not all of the channels you enjoy watching, it’s a solid option.

Riders to Watch

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), the defending champion , should enter this year’s race as the top favorite. He’s spent much of the season at training camps with his teammates, but when he has raced, he’s done well, winning two of three stage races he entered and finishing third in the one that he didn’t. His squad is the strongest in the Tour and the course suits him. Assuming he makes it to the starting line in Bilbao without any unexpected mishaps (like crashes or illnesses), he’s the #1 contender.

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) who won back-to-back Tours in 2020 and 2021 and absolutely CRUSHED the first part of the season (he won the Ruta del Sol, Paris-Nice, the Tour of Flanders , the Amstel Gold Race , and Flèche Wallonne ) would have been the top favorite had he not crashed and broken his wrist at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The injury forced him off the bike for a while, interrupting his training for the Tour. But that might be a good thing: first because it means he’ll be peaking a bit later in the race; and second because he’ll be a bit more of a dark horse, which could play right into his hands. He has the added advantage of having beaten Vingegaard the only time they raced against one another so far this season: at Paris-Nice in March.

The INEOS Grenadiers will again come to the Tour led by Colombia’s Daniel Martinez, who’s so far failed to live up to the expectations the team had for him when they signed him away from EF Education a few years ago. He’ll be joined by his compatriot, Egan Bernal , the winner of the 2019 Tour de France (and 2021 Giro d’Italia ) who’s slowly been working his way back from a crash that nearly took his life in February 2022.

Other contenders include Spain’s Enric Mas (Movistar), a three-time runner-up in the Tour of Spain who has fifth- and sixth-place Tour de France finishes on his resume; France’s David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), who narrowly missed a spot on the final podium last year; and Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), who has podium finishes in all three grand tours including a win at the 2019 Giro d’Italia .

Tour de France Stage Schedule

Hainan tv bahamian ambassador to china inaugurates the xds cup 15th tour of hainan international road cycling race.

Over Dozens of Elite Cycling Teams from around the Globe Embarked on A 5-Day, 810.5 Kilometer Island Ride

QIONGHAI, China , Aug. 30, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — The XDS Cup 15 th Tour of Hainan International Road Cycling Race (“the Tour of Hainan”) began in Qionghai, Hainan Province on August 27, 2024 . Her Excellency Paulette Bethel, the Bahamian Ambassador to China , sounded the starting gun for the five-day event, which gathered some of the world’s top cyclists on picturesque Hainan Island for a thrilling five-stage race. The event features a demanding 810.5 km course through some of Hainan Province’s most scenic locales, including Qionghai, Wanning, and Sanya.

Over Dozens of Elite Cycling Teams from around the Globe Embarked on A 5-Day, 810.5 Kilometer Island Ride of XDS Cup 15th Tour of Hainan International Road Cycling Race.

This year’s Tour boasts an impressive roster of 21 elite cycling teams from around the globe, including one world-class team , 5 professional groups , and 15 continental teams . The cyclists will compete across the picturesque yet challenging terrains of the island, aiming to outpace one another in what promises to be a fiercely contested event.

Ambassador Paulette Bethel came to Hainan at the invitation of Hainan TV’s program Ambassador’s Dinner Party . In addition to her official duties, Ambassador Bethel’s visit included cultural engagements, including a tour of the Coconut Museum where she participated in traditional coconut carving. The ambassador remarked on the warmth and hospitality extended to her during her brief three-day stay, making her feel “truly at home.”

On the day of the race, Ambassador Bethel got on a bike and experienced the thrill of the famous tour alongside amateur cyclists.

As the Tour gains prestige on the international cycling circuit, diplomats have acknowledged its cultural significance and competitive spirit. Ambassador Bethel found her visit particularly meaningful; the island’s climate and cultural offerings reminded her of the Bahamas , inspiring her to extend her best wishes to the participants.

Meanwhile, during a break from filming the third season of Ambassador’s Dinner Party , Malta’s Ambassador to China , His Excellency John Busuttil, made a special trip to Dongfang to express his support for the Tour and invited cycling enthusiasts from around the world to join the event.

The Tour of Hainan, first held in 2006, has risen from its initial 2.2 intercontinental rating to become a highlight on the Asian and global cycling calendars, reflecting both the island’s charm and the excellence of event organization in China .

Hainan Broadcasting Station (HMG) (“Hainan Broadcasting Station”) has taken a novel approach to the Tour this year by integrating diplomatic resources and leveraging the reach of its television programs to enhance the event’s international appeal. Programs such as  The World’s Specialty and Ambassador’s Dinner Party have successfully engaged several ambassadors, adding a rich international flavor and diplomatic nuance to the cycling event. The approach has been instrumental in the Tour’s ongoing global expansion and its alignment with universal professional standards in sports event management.

Hainan Broadcasting Station has also partnered with a broad range of top-tier media outlets, employing a mix of online and offline communication to deliver extensive coverage of the event. The Hainan International Communication Center has supported these efforts by expanding coverage of the event on its social media networks and global streaming services, sharing real-time race developments with an international audience.

The increased participation of international cycling teams underscores the Tour of Hainan’s growing stature on the global stage, enhancing Hainan’s profile as a premier destination for sports tourism.
