JBL Tour Pro 3 review: Who could ask for anything more?

JBL Tour Pro 3 in their open charging case.

“For those who want it all, the JBL Tour Pro 3 have an unbeatable set of features.”
  • Great sound quality
  • Tons of features
  • Case works as a wireless transmitter
  • Improved call quality
  • Fully Auracast compatible
  • Options may be overwhelming
  • Bulky charging case

It’s not every day that a manufacturer launches a product that addresses every criticism and suggestion that I had leveled at its previous model. And yet, that seems to be the case with the JBL Tour Pro 3.

Bigger and smaller

Tons of utility, the future is auracast, two new codecs, supercharged calling, silky sound, new spatial audio, battery life, even more ….

Better call quality, better spatial audio , the availability of a hi-res codec, and being able to use the case as a transmitter — I asked for all of these improvements in my review of the JBL Tour Pro 2 . The $300 Tour Pro 3 have them all and more: dual drivers, Auracast support, and a surprising feature that audiophiles and gamers will love.

It felt like JBL dared me to find a problem with the Tour Pro 3, so I spent two weeks trying. Spoiler alert: I failed.

Here’s what you need to know about JBL’s latest flagship.

  • 1. The JBL Tour Pro 3 (left) and Tour Pro 2
  • 2. The JBL Tour Pro 3 (left) and Tour Pro 2

The Tour Pro 2’s most eye-catching feature was the color touchscreen on the charging case. It returns on the Pro 3, but now it’s 30% bigger, while the case itself is a little smaller. It’s still a bit bulky and heavy when compared to something as svelte as the Apple AirPods Pro . But given what the Tour Pro 3’s case can do, that’s like saying an SUV is bulky and heavy compared to a sports car.

You still get wireless or USB-C charging. But if you look closely at the USB-C port area, you’ll notice a small hole that wasn’t there on the Tour Pro 2. JBL tells me that’s a speaker opening for the as-yet-unreleased Find My locator feature, which is planned for a future firmware update.

At first glance, the earbuds appear unchanged. But look a little closer and they’re actually a bit thicker (likely to make room for the new drivers) and now include an additional external mic grille. They’re also more robust, with an IP55 rating for dust and water resistance. JBL recognized that not everyone got a good fit with the Tour Pro 2’s three sizes of eartips, so there are now six sizes, and the largest set is made of memory foam.

The Tour Pro 3’s case is unprecedented in terms of functionality — it’s like Batman’s utility belt. The list is huge: playback control (play/pause, track skipping), volume control, ANC/transparency modes, control over spatial audio settings, the ability to choose EQ presets, and Find My buds — and those are just six of the 18 features you can control. That’s a vast increase over the features on the Tour Pro 2, so I was relieved to discover that you can reorder them (and turn some of them off) in the JBL Headphones app.

Most of what you can do on the case can be accomplished via your phone, the JBL Headphones app, or the earbuds’ touch controls, which led me to be a bit skeptical of the touchscreen’s value on the Tour Pro 2.

But the Tour Pro 3 are a different beast. When connected to a wired source of audio, the case takes over communication with the earbuds, severing the app’s Bluetooth link. In these scenarios, the smart case becomes the only way to adjust certain settings — unless you use the case’s audio source screen to switch back to the Bluetooth connection.

As Bluetooth Auracast becomes more common, using the case to find and listen to Auracasts (or share wired sources via Auracast) will be very handy.

I tried both of these activities using the Tour Pro 3 and a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (one of the few smartphones that can currently transmit and receive Auracasts) and they worked seamlessly. This is good news for Auracast as a technology — if it’s not easy, no one will want to use it.

The case can receive Auracasts if the broadcast hasn’t been password-protected. Accessing protected streams must be done with the app. However, when transmitting Auracasts from the case, you can do it both ways: free of restrictions or with a four-digit PIN.

With the addition of Sony’s LDAC hi-res codec, the Tour Pro 3 can stream high-quality audio from compatible Android devices. The iPhone, meanwhile, doesn’t support LDAC or any hi-res audio codecs. The difference can be quite noticeable. AAC, the default codec for iPhones, tends to emphasize lows and highs at the expense of midrange detail. With LDAC, the Tour Pro 3 sound more relaxed and balanced. Increasing the volume lets you hear more detail without increasing harshness.

LDAC isn’t the only hi-res codec that JBL has integrated. The Tour Pro 3 are also LC3plus-compatible. That’s the newest Bluetooth codec on the block and (on paper at least), it offers all of the benefits of LDAC, with lower latency and better error correction.

On its own, LC3plus isn’t very useful. Very few phones currently support it. However, the Tour Pro 3’s case uses LC3plus when communicating with the earbuds. And that means if you plug the case into a computer or phone, you automatically get the benefits of LC3plus. This even works on older Lightning-equipped iPhones, but you’ll need to buy your own OTG Lightning-to-USB-C cable .

The Tour Pro 3 are much improved over the second-gen when it comes to calls. Your voice will still wobble a bit when the earbuds attempt to squelch sounds around you, but it’s no longer a deal-breaker. Thanks to improvements in JBL’s VoiceAware (also known as sidetone) you can now hear your own voice as clearly as your callers can.

The big upside to calls on the Tour Pro 3 once again is driven by the case. Plugging it into a USB-C source like a laptop lets the buds communicate using the case’s ultra-low-latency wireless link. Along with LC3plus’ high-quality audio, this makes the Tour Pro 3 superb for things like Microsoft Teams calls. In fact, they’re also Zoom-certified when used with the case. The only drawback is that the wireless range can be quite short. In my testing, I could only get about 10 to 15 feet away from the case before my voice dropped out entirely.

I had no complaints about noise cancellation on the Tour Pro 2, and the third generation offers subtle, but noticeable improvements. They effortlessly killed a variety of distractions, from lumbering trucks to the sound of our vacuum cleaner. The real improvement, as I alluded to in the calling section, is the transparency portion. Being able to hear your own voice more clearly makes a feature like TalkThru (which dips the volume of your audio when you enter transparency mode) more enjoyable.

JBL has also added Smart Talk, which switches into transparency mode and pauses your audio automatically when you start talking — it’s one of my favorite new features. I’m also a fan of how fast you can switch between ANC and transparency modes. It’s almost instant, while other earbuds can take 2 seconds or more.

Transparency still isn’t as good as on the Apple AirPods Pro 2, which is a bit frustrating at this price. Still, in my experience, only the Sony WF-1000XM5 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds come close to Apple on transparency.

Personal Sound Amplification (a hearing enhancer for busy environments) returns on the Tour Pro 3, and it also benefits from improved transparency performance.

Switching to a dual-driver arrangement in the Tour Pro 3 has given these earbuds better performance than their predecessors. But like many audio refinements in flagship products, this is all about subtleties and details. If you’re on public transit or working out at a gym, it’s unlikely you’ll notice much difference.

The point of using a dynamic driver for mid and low frequencies and a balanced armature for the highs is to give each frequency range its own optimized signal path. In the case of the Tour Pro 3, this involves the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and the amplifier — there are two in each earbud.

In a quiet location, you may hear the additional clarity this architecture allows. It was most noticeable on tracks that combine deep bass hits with vocals, like Billie Eilish’s bad guy.  I could hear Elish’s whispery lyrics float above the throbbing bass line, instead of getting smeared by it.

Out of the box, with the equalizer turned off, the Tour Pro 3 have a slightly bass-forward sound signature that is otherwise quite neutral. If that doesn’t suit you, the available EQ presets and the 10-band equalizer give you tons of control to get the balance dialed into your preferences. There’s also JBL’s Personi-Fi custom tuning tool, which attempts to adjust EQ based on a hearing test. I didn’t like the results (it created a kind of hollow sound), but the test is only a few minutes long, so it’s worth trying.

I like that the app lets you save your own EQ formulas, but unfortunately, these aren’t uploaded to the smart case, so you can’t access them when connected to a wired source.

Speaking of wired sources, the case’s low-latency connection is great for watching videos — I didn’t notice any lip-sync delay at all. I didn’t try it with any video games, but LC3plus has a lower latency than AAC, LDAC, or even aptX Low Latency, so it should be great for gaming too.

Quality-wise, using USB-C easily outperformed using the analog connection, which isn’t surprising. Analog sources must be converted to digital before being compressed for wireless streaming — a step the case doesn’t need to take with digital sources.

On the Tour Pro 2, I noted that JBL’s spatial audio setting didn’t impress me as much as listening to a true Dolby Atmos Music mix from a service like Apple Music. Perhaps it’s the new driver setup, but I’ve changed my mind on the Tour Pro 3.

Enabling spatial audio using the Music mode (as opposed to Movie or Game) creates a greatly expanded soundstage. On some tracks, like Charlie Mingus’ Things Ain’t What They Used to Be , it gives the performance more space, while simultaneously boosting the low end a bit, adding greater resonance to Mingus’ bass work. But it can be unpredictable. I would have expected Dave Brubeck’s Take Five , another bass-rich jazz standard, to benefit from spatial in the same way, however, it robbed that track of much of its soft textures. In other words, your mileage may vary.

Head tracking (new on the Pro 3) does exactly what you would expect, keeping major song elements fixed in space as you turn your head left and right. It also works well when watching video content, as it keeps voices anchored to the screen’s location instead of moving with your head.

This can be a lot of fun when using the case to transmit a source like your TV’s headphone output, except for one annoyance: the case’s spatial controls are disabled when connected to wired sources. If you want spatial sound, you need to enable it when in Bluetooth mode and then switch to your wired source (and vice versa).

Sadly, spatial audio, whether fixed or head-tracked, isn’t compatible with the LDAC codec.

I have complained loudly about JBL’s odd control settings in the past. But the company remains steadfast. You can control ANC, volume, and playback, but only two can be active at the same time. Want to control volume and playback? You’ll lose ANC. Like ANC and playback? No volume control for you.

Given how many companies have figured out how to give customers control over everything (plus the freedom to assign gestures as they see fit), I’m not sure what’s holding JBL back.

Still, the earbuds are very responsive to taps, and the wear sensors do a great job of auto-pausing your tunes when you remove one.

That big charging case gives the Tour Pro 3 excellent stamina, with three full recharges for the earbuds. When using ANC, JBL says you’ll get up to 8 hours of playtime, which goes up to 11 hours when ANC is off. That means a total time of between 32 and 44 hours, which should be plenty, even for the longest flights.

JBL doesn’t give separate numbers for battery life when using the case as a transmitter, but it may end up being a wash: the earbuds will likely consume less battery life because the LC3plus codec is very power efficient, and yet the case may consume more since it’s being asked to send and receive audio signals, a task that is usually handled by the phone.

What I can tell you is that LDAC always reduces battery life, sometimes by as much as 2 to 3 hours, because it’s very power-hungry when compared to other codecs.

Yes, there’s even more I could say about the Tour Pro 3, but in the interest of space (and your attention span), I’ll just list a few of the extras I haven’t touched on:

  • Google Fast Pair
  • Microsoft Swift Pair
  • Bluetooth Multipoint
  • Find My Earbuds
  • Silent Now (for ANC operation without Bluetooth)
  • Customizable smart case wallpaper

Sure, $300 is certainly on the higher end of the wireless earbuds price spectrum, but the JBL Tour Pro 3 offer so many features that they’re an excellent value. They hit all of the important areas like sound quality, noise canceling, call quality, and battery life, and then they go even further with a slew of useful features like the case’s wired source connection, plus Auracast support.

If there’s a downside to the Tour Pro 3, it’s that they’ve got too much going on. The app (and the smart case) have a dizzying number of settings and features, which might simply put some people off. In many ways, the Tour Pro 3 are the antithesis of the Apple AirPods Pro, favoring a kitchen sink approach over Apple’s much more limited set of capabilities.

They aren’t for everyone, but if you like what they offer, they’re unbeatable.

Niche smartphone company Nothing has two new sets of wireless earbuds that go after Apple's AirPods Pro in more ways than one. The Nothing Ear ($149) and Nothing Ear (a) ($99) both offer noise cancellation, hi-res audio, and tight integration with Nothing's phones, but they also provide pinch-to-speak access to ChatGPT, arguably the most popular AI service in the world.

That's a full-frontal assault on the three major voice assistants that currently dominate on smartphones: Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa. These assistants are very capable when it comes to simple voice commands like pausing your music or asking about the weather, but they haven't kept pace with Open AI's ChatGPT, which offers more sophisticated tasks and turn-based conversations.

Cambridge Audio's new Melomania M100 wireless earbuds are the U.K. company's first model to offer active noise cancellation (ANC), a key feature of virtually every flagship model from competitors, including Apple's AirPods Pro. The Melomania M100 are priced at $219 and are available starting on March 27 at Amazon and other retailers.

While ANC is a big addition, Cambridge Audio appears to have caught up with the market in a number of other areas, too. The M100 has a case that supports wireless charging, and thanks to Qualcomm's Snapdragon Sound platform, the earbuds can receive lossless CD-quality audio from compatible smartphones, as well as lossy, hi-res audio at up to 24-bit/96kHz.

Wireless speakers are everywhere, but not all of them are created equal, making it difficult to sift through the crud. Additionally, what defines a "wireless" speaker can differ from person to person: Does it use Bluetooth or a Wi-Fi network (or both)? Is it portable (with a battery) or more of an at-home, plug-in kind or speaker that's part of a bigger multi-room network music system? Yes, yes, and yes.

For this roundup, we're going to focus more on the plug-in variety with Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth wireless capabilities, because we have a whole other roundup of the portable Bluetooth speaker variety for you to check out if that's your preference.

One of the most anticipated seasons in recent zMAX CARS Tour history is set to begin by bookending a full slate of events for the inaugural Speed Week at Southern National Motorsports Park.

Headlining the first day of racing on March 2 will be the Egholm 100 for the CARS Pro Late Model Tour. This will be the second time the PLM Tour has competed on the .4-mile oval in Lucama, North Carolina after northeast short track veteran Mike Hopkins led 57 laps to claim the win last year.

Hopkins is making another trip down south with the goal of claiming a second consecutive PLM Tour victory at Southern National. He will have to fend off an even mix of experienced veterans and young prospects, all of whom are seeking to build some early momentum for the 2024 season.

VIDEO: Mike Hopkins reacts after winning last year's CARS Tour Pro Late Model race at Southern National.

Mike Hopkins eager to make another trip to Southern National

Throughout his career, Mike Hopkins has made a name for himself as one of the most consistent short track competitors from the northeast.

The past year saw Hopkins make occasional ventures down to the southeast as a part-time competitor in the CARS PLM Tour. Hopkins set the tone for the rest of the PLM Tour field by winning the first two races of the 2023 season, starting with a dominant win at Southern National Motorsports Park.

“It was awesome to go to a place I’d only been once before [and win],” Hopkins said. “The ideal thing is to win everywhere you go and in every series you enter, so I was very fortunate to have everything go my way. [The CARS Tour] is up and coming with the new ownership. They’re bringing short tracks back to where they should be.”

Although Hopkins previously competed in the now defunct CARS Super Late Model Tour, he said the surging popularity of the sanctioning body was a main catalyst behind him wanting to do more races with them, this time in the PLM Tour.

Not many tracks from Hopkins’ home region can compare to the size of the facilities both divisions of the CARS Tour normally compete on. The larger tracks in the southeast always keep Hopkins vigilant whenever he races on them, which in turn makes him more versatile as a driver.

For Hopkins, Southern National is one of the most unorthodox tracks he has competed on across the United States. To obtain a second straight victory against another stout field on Saturday, Hopkins said it will be imperative to balance out aggression and patience around Southern National’s layout.

“[Southern National] is really unique,” Hopkins said. “You can drive the guts out of it, but you really can’t. It reminds me of [Five Flags Speedway], you have to be disciplined with how you get into the turns. There’s a lot of creativity to it, and once you figure the track out, it’s such a fun place to race.”

Highlands Motorsports begins pursuit for third straight title with T.J. DeCaire

When he agreed to drive the No. 96 for Highlands Motorsports in 2024, T.J. DeCaire knew there would be high expectations placed upon him.

Highlands Motorsports has claimed a CARS PLM Tour championship each year since the inception of the series with Luke Fenhaus and Caden Kvapil respectively. DeCaire believes he can reach the same heights that Fenhaus and Kvapil did but is currently focused on an efficient first weekend with his new team at Southern National Motorsports Park.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” DeCaire said. “There’s a lot of nerves going into this first race since the CARS Tour is a pretty big deal. I have a lot to look forward to with a great group of guys behind me.”

A member of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program, DeCaire previously ran four PLM Tour events with his family-owned car during the 2023 season. Consistency followed DeCaire at nearly every track, as he scored three top 5s and led 14 laps at Dillon Motor Speedway.

Southern National presents a new obstacle for DeCaire, as the 17-year-old Land O’ Lakes, Florida native has yet to turn a competitive lap at the facility. DeCaire hopes preseason testing with Highlands Motorsports at Southern National will help him get acclimated to the track, but he has also been studying plenty of film ahead of the Egholm 100.

The goal for DeCaire is to lean on crew chief Josh Reeves for advice while simultaneously keeping an open mind on how Southern National will change during race day. Coming away from Southern National with a strong performance is something DeCaire believes will set the tone as he and Highlands Motorsports chase another PLM Tour title.

“Opening up with a win would be great to start the season off strong,” DeCaire said. “The competition [in the PLM Tour] is going to be hard to beat. We’re points racing, so every spot matters. If we can’t get a win, then I need to get as many points as I can.”

Dylan Garner ready to chase PLM Tour Rookie of the Year

It has been nearly a year since the last time Dylan Garner attempted a race with the CARS PLM Tour.

Now fully regrouped for 2024, Garner is taking his No. 97 Global Emission Systems/Kooks Headers Chevrolet back to Southern National Motorsports Park for the Egholm 100, where he hopes to kick off a successful bid for PLM Tour Rookie of the Year by improving upon a 21st place finish from his first visit to the track.

“At Southern [National] last year, we had a radiator cap bust on us and didn’t notice it until the end of the race,” Garner said. “We kind of burned up a motor and that took us out of it for a little bit. We got it all back together now and have made a lot of improvements over the offseason, so everything is looking pretty good.”

Garner got his start in motorsports out on the West Coast by making a handful of starts in the ARCA Menards Series West and SRL Spears Southwest Tour. Although he loved the West Coast, Garner knew the best way to step up his performance was to move across the country and start racing in the southeast.

Adjusting to the competitive culture of short track racing in the southeast has not been without obstacles for Garner. Despite this, Garner has remained committed towards building up his program and believes enough strides were made during the offseason for him to start consistently competing for Top 10s.

Southern National provided Garner a taste of home last year, as he compared the track to a miniature version of Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway with its banking and high speeds. The relative familiarity with Southern National has Garner optimistic he can put together a strong run on Saturday and establish momentum for the rest of 2024.

“My main goals are to run all the laps we can and finish races,” Garner said. “Of course, we always want to win, but this is the big leagues. We’re taking a softer approach on our goals while we’re getting going here because last year was such a learning curve. A top 15 would be awesome to start, but we want it to at least be known that we’re here to compete.”

The Egholm 100 is sandwiched between features for the Charger, Bandolero and Any Car divisions at Southern National. On-track action begins at 3:30 p.m. ET, with the Egholm 100 set to get going at approximately 4:30 p.m. ET. FloRacing will have live flag-to-flag coverage.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series putters: What you need to know

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/Spider Tour Family 5.jpg

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The Spider Tour mallets revolutionized TaylorMade’s position in the marketplace with near equal top-level success on tour and at retail, but while the company explored other versions and shapes the last two years, the use and demand stayed with the original now-iconic shapes like Spider Tour and Spider Tour X. So rather than try to discover a new Spider, the company is launching a new Spider Tour Series with five options all built on the original platforms, including shapes made popular by Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and most recently Scottie Scheffler. The models employ the same wireframe construction, a variety of sole weighting to emphasize different centers of gravity to match different stroke types, and the distinct wide white aiming stripe, as well as the grooved Surlyn face insert.

PRICE: $350 (Spider Tour, Spider Tour X, Spider Tour Z, Spider Tour S), available for pre-order now, at retail on Oct. 27 (except Spider Tour S, which is scheduled to be at retail in the spring of 2024).

TaylorMade returns to the core shape of its Spider from five years ago, one of the most successful versions of the mallet brand that has become an icon. What’s intriguing is from that base model, the company is launching a collection of five versions that share the same concepts of high stability with clear alignment and a face with grooves to enhance initial roll. Helped by research in recent years that shows how different players respond to center-of-gravity depth, each model pushes weight selectively back or forward.

3 COOL THINGS

1. A restoration, rebirth, reinvigoration of an original: The Spider family of putters easily has been the most popular mallet design in TaylorMade’s history, and leading its success on the professional tours and in the marketplace has been the Spider Tour family. Spider putters have reportedly been a business all on its own worth more than $250 million with more than 1.5 million units sold. And while the company spent the last few years trying to reinvent the iconic mallet, this reintroduction or rebirth of the original has all the markings of a Gil Hanse renovation of a Donald Ross golf course. The reasoning is simple, said Brian Bazzell, TaylorMade’s vice president of product creation. Mallets, and in particular the way the Spider Tour models have been able to accommodate and improve different tour players strokes, are just better.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/Spider Tour Short Slant SOLE.jpg

“The reality is mallets provide a performance element that blades simply can’t—we’ve actually proven this out on tour,” he said, noting that Rory McIlroy improves by 1.5 strokes per tournament with his Spider Tour X compared to a blade, while Dustin Johnson and his Spider Tour is better from six feet and in than he is with a blade. “There are some incredibly popular models that we’ve had over time, and there’s this built-up demand for us to sort of come back and re-birth some of these incredible shapes. And we’re not going to just do that. We’re going to also come with a few others that are going to fit a few more golfers. Spider is synonymous with stability. That means when you hit that putt off-center we maintain that ball speed so it doesn’t act like a mis-hit.”

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/Spider Tour V Short Slant ADR.jpg

2. How to make mallets for all strokes: The range of elite players using Spider Tour over the years runs from Jason Day to Sergio Garcia, and from Dustin Johnson to Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. Not one of those strokes are similar, and that’s why this reborn Spider Tour line includes five models. The group includes an original Spider Tour with its rear “jet engine” like heel and toe weights for increased moment of inertia (stability on off-center hits). There’s also the Spider Tour X, where those weights are featured in a more compact wing-less shape. The intent is to shift the weight a little more forward while maintaining high stability. A couple of new models will come to the line this fall. Those include the Spider Tour Z, which maintains the sleeker shape of the Spider Tour X but moves the heel and toe weights well forward in the sole; and the Spider Tour V, the most compact of the models which eliminates the wing structure completely while also keeping those heel and toe weights well forward in the sole.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/Spider Tour Z DB SOLE.jpg

Finally, a heavier, larger Spider Tour S will come along in the spring, using a 38-inch shaft to achieve a stroke stabilizing counterbalanced weighting (where there’s heavier weight in both the head and grip ends).

Altogether the distance the center of gravity is from the face changes from 38 millimeters back on Spider Tour S to 27 millimeters back on the Spider Tour V. That difference in CG depth is meant to accommodate how much easier the face can rotate back to square in the stroke (farther back accommodates a more straight-back, straight through stroke, for example). It also is one reason that the models feature a fairly wide range of moment of inertia, from 4900 grams-centimeters squared on the V to over 6,000 on the S, although each of those is significantly higher than a traditional blade style design.

3. A consistent feel, borrowed from iron designs: Each of the Spider Tour putters will benefit from an undercut chamber in the sole behind the face that is filled with a corrugated structure made of Hybrar, a vibration damping thermoplastic rubber that’s been used on irons like the M5 and Stealth to enhance feel. Also familiar is the company’s Surlyn face insert, which features angled grooves to improve initial roll. As well, the Spider Tour’s familiar wide width aim and alignment design, called True Path, is part of the line throughout, adding a distinct contrast to the gunmetal finish.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series S, V, X and Z Putters Review

Published: 19 September 2023 Last updated: 21 May 2024

At a glance

  • TG Rating 5 out of 5
  • Owner Rating Not yet rated
  • The counter-weighted Spider Tour S is a brilliant addition to the family.
  • These are just the most stable putters used on tour.
  • Finally fitters can dial you into your best fitting Spider model.
  • Depending on your view, we've seen three of the models before.

What we say...

The five-model taylormade spider tour series putter family brings additional forgiveness, new designs, and an extra level of personalization..

The TaylorMade Spider Tour Series putters are the culmination of almost 20 years of dedication to helping golfers hole more putts through stability. During that time TaylorMade has gone from absolutely nowhere to creating some of the best putters and most winningest flatsticks available. At times they’ve also bossed retail sales.

Over the last 20 years, the Spider franchise has played a major role in convincing Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and now Scottie Scheffler to use more stable, forgiving modern mallets, in a bid to improve their stats on the dancefloor. And it’s no secret when using his favourite Spider X Rory has gained 1.25 strokes a round versus a less forgiving blade.

Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and jason Day using TaylorMade Spider putters

DJ’s seen good gains inside 6 feet with his Spider Tour putter as well, all of which has now led world number 1 Scottie Scheffler to flirting with the franchise too.

Spiders are the best TaylorMade putters ever made, and they’ve reached a level where some models now have a legacy and genuine cult following. But the Spider X Rory McIlroy uses, launched back in 2019, and the famous Spider Tour that put TaylorMade putters on the map in 2017, are both barely available to buy.

So TaylorMade have decided now is a great time to re-introduce their most famous Spider putter models. They’re also introducing some interesting new head shapes and ideas to elevate the franchise to a brand new audience of golfers who may never have tried Spider putters before.

Welcome to the TaylorMade Spider Tour Series S, V, X and Z putters.

Everything you need to know about the TaylorMade Spider Tour Series 2023 putters

Synonymous with stability.

From day one in 2008 when Spider putters launched onto the scene the franchise has always been about upping stability. Additional stability translates to maintaining ball speed on off-center hits, so putts don’t behave like miss-hits even when they don’t impact center face.

The idea means golfers get greater distance control from long range and additional accuracy when closer to the hole. To ensure the Tour Series putters fulfil their MOI and center of gravity goals there’s a wireframe construction to position weight accurately and a new undercut thin wall concept helps boost MOI to new levels too.

Multiple materials

Spider putters have never been simple one-piece cast constructions. That sort of basic idea would be way too inefficient to offer the ultimate levels of forgiveness that genuinely help golfers hole more putts.

Like their ancestors, the new Spider Tour models boast multiple material constructions to remove inefficient mass from every conceivable location. New for this family though is a concertina-shaped Hybrar Echo Damper (yes we saw the same material in the SIM Max and SIM Max irons ) behind the face. It controls vibration and tunes sound to higher levels than previous Spider models.

Let’s talk True Path

True Path alignment systems have been part of the Spider family since 2019 when TaylorMade unveiled the first Spider X putter . It’s so good at helping golfers aim more accurately and consistently it runs through all models within the new Tour Series line-up.

Brian Bazzel, Vice President of Product Creation at TaylorMade commented: “The contrast between the white color and green grass behind activates the retina in a golfer’s eye, to heighten the sense of alignment”.

There’s a new finish

If there’s been a tiny chink in the armor of previous Spider putters it’s how they’ve usually come with painted finishes. On the plus side, that means TaylorMade have been able to offer several different stock colours, and through their MySpider customisation platform allow golfers to personalise their new putter to their own preference.

But painted finishes are prone to chipping and wearing. Each new Spider Tour Series model now comes with a super sleek Gunmetal PVD finish, which doubles down on durability and creates a really desirable-looking putter.

Each new Spider Tour Series putter also comes with a stepless KBS CT (Constant Taper) 120G black PVD shaft , and SuperStroke Pistol 1.0 putter grip.

Pure Roll insert

Over the years TaylorMade have done tons of research into the best feeling inserts, and face groove patterns that ensure great roll across the surface of the green. Thanks to the success of previous models, the new Spider family all come with a Pure Roll 5mm surlyn insert. Downward facing 45° grooves help impart topspin and deliver better end-over-end roll.

Choose the CG location and MOI of your putter

Tons of golfers now get fit for drivers and irons but TyalorMade want fitters to tailor more putters to golfers too. So the five-model Spider Tour Series has been specifically designed to give fitters CG placement options, toe hang choices, and different levels of MOI.

TaylorMade swear a deep center of gravity is essential for upping forgiveness (something Cleveland and their Frontline Elite putters would argue against), but between them, the five new Spider models have CG locations ranging from 27 to 38mm deep. There’s also a choice of either a small slant hosel or double bend set-up so golfers get the opportunity to choose which best suits their straight or arcing stroke.

Here’s the center of gravity location, MOI, and toe hang for each model in the family.

Counter-Balanced putters are bang on trend

Golfers who’ve watched any tour golf this year will know counterbalanced putters have exploded back onto the scene. Two majors were won with counterbalanced putters in 2023. Wyndham Clark used one during his US Open win, and Brian Harman snaffled the Open Championship using a previous TaylorMade counter-weighted Spider OS CB. The resurgent Rickie Fowler and perennial tour winner Keegan Bradley also both use counterbalanced putters too.

Brian harman and Wyndham Clark using counter-balanced putters at the Open and US Open

So with Counter Balanced putters (where mass is positioned above the hands inside the grip) trending up, TaylorMade have taken the opportunity to introduce a bigger, heavier and counterweighted Spider S. The model will likely satisfy the increased demand from golfers looking to emulate Brian Harman and the performance of his Spider OS CB putter at The Open in July 2023.

Weights = options

Weights have been a common theme running through tons of TaylorMade products since the company revealed the first adjustable R7 driver in 2004. The original Spider Tour famously housed two TSS weights within its jet engine-style rear ports, and for this new generation, the TSS weights have once again made the cut.

Where the company look to create deeper CGs within the Tour and Tour S heads, the weights remain in the rear position. But, on the X head they move to the rear sole, where for the Z and V models to help create a more forward CG, the weights are positioned behind the face.

Meet the TaylorMade Spider Tour Series 2023 models

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series putter

The original Spider Tour burst onto the scene back in 2017, when Jason Day shot the lights out and rose to world number 1 using his famous red-colored model . Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm were also massive fans. It’s no surprise then that this famous model, which racked up dozens of worldwide tour wins, has been selected for re-introduction.

The TaylorMade Spider Tour Series putters at address with both a small slant hosel and double bend shaft

Thanks to a refined weight set-up, the model offers 700 more MOI points than its predecessor. The small slant hosel gives 29° of toe hang, making this set-up good for slight arc strokes, where the double bend set-up is face balanced and better for straighter strokes. A new longer 38” counterbalanced set-up is also available in the USA.

tour pro z

The short slant hosel gives 30° of toe hang, which will suit golfers with a degree of rotation in their putting stroke, or those that prefer the feeling of the putter releasing through impact. The double bend shaft set-up is face-balanced and a better choice for straighter stroke players.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series X Putter

tour pro z

This head shape is a proven winner, and from my experience while testing it’s a reliable and consistent performer on the dancefloor. I really like the flowing body lines whereas some of the competition adopts much sharper-edged more angular approaches. If there’s such a thing as a classic MOI putter the Spider Tour X is it.

In previous generations, the X has been an award winner here at TG, and I reckon the new black shaft, refined sound and feel, which is more muted than the original, and more durable gunmetal PVD finish which won’t chip like the previous painted models, elevate the X onto the MOI putter podium once again.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series Z putter

The Z is one of two new models within the family. Its shape has been designed to pay homage to the wing shape of the original Tour, but thanks to sole weighting behind the face golfers get plenty of toe hang and a blade-like feel.

The TaylorMade Spider Tour Series Z putter with both a small slant and double bend hosel at address

A model that frames the ball beautifully at address. Thanks to how low its body sits to the putting surface, this is a very simple and comfortable putter to set up at address.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series Z Putter

tour pro z

The double bend hosel option like the rest of the family is face balanced. It’s a good option for straighter-stroke golfers who don’t want the complexity of wing or back weight structures distracting the eye from their beautiful new modern MOI mallet.

tour pro z

With a center of gravity location just 27mm from the face (the smallest of the Spider Tour family), expect a substantial 32° toe hang, and the Spider putter that will feel and behave most like a blade. This should definitely be a consideration if you’re transitioning into MOI putters for the first time.

If you’re really sensitive to the feel of putters the Spiders surlyn and aluminum combination works great with different golf ball compressions and cover materials, as some insert putters can feel very spongy if you also play very soft golf balls.

With a Spider model to cover off all wants and desires in the MOI market in 2024 I believe the franchise is very difficult to shun this year.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Series S putter

The Tour Series S is TaylorMade’s response to the resurgence on tour for counter-weighted putters. On the surface, the model may look very similar to the standard Spider Tour putter, but the head is 3mm longer from toe and heel and 8mm wider from face to back. The extra size allows TaylorMade to up head weight and create a counter-balanced model.

Thanks to its additional size and weight the S is only available at 35” and 38” lengths, both come with counter-balanced grips. If you’re looking to buy into Rickie Fowler or Wyndham Clark levels of performance by moving to a counter-balanced putter it’s well worth remembering both employ an Odyssey Versa Jailbird putter at 38”.

tour pro z

Create your very own personalized Spider Tour Series putter

As brilliant as the Spider Tour Series putters are, TaylorMade understand modern golfers love creating their own personalised flatsticks nowadays. So, through the brand’s MySpider personalization platform, both the Spider Tour and Spider Tour X are available for additional customization.

Expect four finish choices (Hydro Blast, Black, Gunmetal and Rose Gold), plus options of face insert material and color (surlyn three colours or a slightly firmer aluminium in 10 colors). Further customization comes through sightline design, sightline color, true path color, sole plate, back badge, weight color and two headcover options.

All in we reckon the MySpider options are a brilliant proposition as they’re available for just £50 more (£349) than the non-customized models (£299).
