This is a grain-free recipe that is perfect for dogs with grain allergies, and it’s produced in the USA. It has 34% protein, 10% moisture, 15% fat, and 5% fiber.

The drawbacks we found were that this brand is only sold at Chewy, and some users reported their dogs didn’t really like the flavor of the blend. There have also been some concerns raised by the FDA about feeding dogs grain-free dog foods. Therefore, it’s best to consult your vet to determine if this is indeed the right way to go when feeding your pet.

American Journey is Chewy’s own brand of pet food. American Journey is a relatively young brand and was created and distributed after Chewy has experienced success and growth by selling other brands’ products.

For these reasons, American Journey is very popular among dog owners on a tight budget or dog owners with multiple large breed dogs who require a substantial volume of dog food.

Sadly,  there is limited information on who manufacturers American Journey products; however, it is known that some of their recipes are produced in a facility in Kansas. Most of their ingredients are also sourced from within the United States, but a select few are sourced from other countries.

American Journey used to be sold exclusively on Chewy’s website. However, recently, Chewy was acquired by PetSmart, and as a consequence, some of American Journey’s recipes are now sold on the PetSmart website as well as in select stores.

The purchase of Chewy was controversial and led to some brands such as Acana , Orijen , and Fromm to pull their products from Chewy. This withdrawal was as these brands did not want to support or have their products associated with large brands and retail stores.

American Journey Product Range

Given the relatively short period that American Journey has been in production, its dog food product range is quite substantial.

The bulk of American Journey’s recipes consist of traditional dry dog food, some of which are grain-free and some of which are not. There is also limited ingredient dog food, puppy food, large breed dog food, and senior dog food, among a few other niche ranges.

By hitting all of niche markets and groups, American Journey can appeal to almost all dogs regardless of age, size, or activity.

In addition to dry dog food recipes, American Journey produces a smaller selection of canned dog food and dog treats. Many of the canned dog food recipes mimic or are similar to dry food recipes, which may enable you to pair them up.

American Journey’s cat food product range is noticeably smaller than its dog food range but still has some variety.

It includes a moderate selection of dry food recipes and a more extensive selection of canned cat food recipes. The canned recipes are split between a number of styles, including stews, pate’s, and “in gravy” recipes.

American Journey recently expanded this cat food range to include some niche recipes such as those for Kittens and for Indoor cats. We strongly believe that American Journey will continue this expansion in the future to other niche products.

We should also point out that Chewy has another private label cat food brand exclusive to their website called  Tiny Tiger , which specializes in wet cat food recipes.

The nutrition offered by American Journey’s dry dog food products varies but is generally above average when compared to other brands.

Some of their lower-cost formulas have a nutritional profile that is acceptable to lesser or average activity dogs, but some of their premium and grain-free formulas have excellent nutrition, which is high in protein and fat.

This kind of nutritional profile would be suitable for dogs of all activity levels, including those who are very active.

This nutrition is especially impressive when you consider the price point of American Journey, which is significantly lower than many of its competitors.

One of American Journey’s best dry dog food recipes is Grain-Free Salmon & Sweet Potato. As the name might suggest, the formula’s primary ingredient is Salmon, but it also makes use of poultry ingredients like Chicken and Turkey.

This mix of poultry and fish provides a satisfactory proportion of protein, and fat, in particular, the Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Salmon is a fantastic source of these fatty acids, which can provide a range of health benefits that should not be ignored.

Sweet Potatoes are the primary vegetable ingredient and are a very dense source of carbohydrates. However, they are not the only vegetable ingredient present as Peas and Chickpeas are also present.

Sadly, this formula, like many others by American Journey, makes use of Pea Protein. Pea Protein inflates the overall level of protein in a dog food formula and is inferior to animal or fish-based protein.

Lamb & Sweet Potato Puppy Recipe Review

American Journey has two very similar puppy recipes, Turkey & Sweet Potato and Lamb & Sweet Potato. Both recipes provide a very satisfactory proportion of protein, which will be used to enable a puppy’s growth.

This protein is from the generous portions of meat ingredients present, such as Turkey, Lamb, and Chicken. The formulas also contain Sweet Potatoes, Peas, and Chickpeas, which are all considered high-quality carbohydrate-providing ingredients.

Unfortunately, American Journey’s puppy recipes have a low proportion of fat in comparison to their rivals.

While a high portion of fat isn’t needed in a puppy’s diet, it is preferred to excessive levels of carbohydrates.

Chicken & Turkey Recipe Review

The above mentioned Chicken & Turkey recipe is straightforward and only contains a few notable ingredients.

The majority of the formula is made up of poultry ingredients such as Whole Chicken, Whole Turkey, and Chicken Liver. This Chicken and Turkey provide the bulk of the recipes protein and fat content, while the Chicken Liver can provide some vitamins and minerals that traditional meat cuts lack.

The formula also includes a small portion of White Potatoes. We don’t believe that White Potatoes are the most appropriate carbohydrate ingredient for dog food, but given the small portion size here, you should not be overly concerned.

Potatoes can offer a small number of other micronutrients and dietary fiber and should, therefore, be considered a step up from low-quality fillers.

Salmon Recipe Review

The four dry cat food recipes from American Journey are incredibly similar. They all offer identical nutrition, which is high in protein as well as providing a moderate proportion of fat. The only difference between them is what meat or fish ingredients they choose to utilize.

This is where the Salmon recipe comes out slightly ahead. As discussed in relation to dog food, Salmon can provide a high level of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids.

These fatty acids offer a number of health benefits. The level of these fatty acids in the salmon recipe compared to the other recipes is as much as three times more concentrated.

The dry cat food recipes also include Tapioca , Peas , Menhaden Fish Meal , Canola Oil , and Flaxseed . All of these ingredients are very regular features in dog and cat food.

Sadly some of these ingredients are vegetable by-products such as Pea Protein. These are not ideal ingredients in a cat’s diet. However, their inclusion is not surprising given American Journey’s price range.

Minced Turkey Recipe In Gravy Review

There is more variety available in American Journey’s wet cat food range. This variety includes “in gravy” recipes, which come out as our favorite of the bunch.

The nutrition offered by the above-mentioned Turkey Recipe In Gravy is fantastic and is almost entirely protein and fat, which is the ideal nutritional profile for a cat.

This protein and fat in this recipe is provided by Turkey, Turkey Liver, and Egg Whites. These are high-quality sources of nutrition, especially the Turkey Liver, which can provide additional nutrition in the form of less common vitamins and minerals.

The recipe does contain a small portion of Peas, but this portion is small enough that it is not worthy of concern or worry.

I believe it has changed whether you can get AJ at petsmart, if you search in their website, nothing comes up. Chewy has also gotten very slow about their shipping, it used to come super fast but now has a huge lag time, which makes it hard if you do run out early bc you can not pick some up at petsmart.😟. If anyone has found it elsewhere please let me know, do foods can be tricky but I have found AJ to be the beat overall.

Beet pulp is a common fiber source in dog foods and is known for its beneficial effects on intestinal health and stool quality. Make Eric Kim’s beautifully simple salmon for a classic Japanese breakfast spread or a quick, scrappy dinner.

Eric Kim has just written a luminous essay about Japanese breakfast , with its constellation of small savory dishes (rice, miso soup, fish, pickles), and the daily practice of preparing it. You could make it bespoke every day, but the more pragmatic approach is to cook some of the elements ahead and fill out the meal with leftovers and other scraps from the fridge — “cooking for future you, not present you,” as Eric says, an idea I love and one you can embrace for any meal.

His new breakfast recipe for miso roasted salmon can be borrowed for dinner — it’s as satisfying at 7 p.m. as it is at 7 a.m., beautifully and saltily simple. (Also borrow his recipe for spinach gomaae , with its light sesame dressing.) The salmon is below, along with four other dinners for the week ahead.

Possibly the highest use of rotisserie or leftover chicken: these tacos from Rick Martínez, which are especially mouthwatering because they include the Cheddar costra (or crust) that you’ll find in taquerias in Northern Mexico and the American Southwest. This is an A-plus dinner that you can pull off on a moment’s notice.

3. Creamy, Spicy Tomato Beans and Greens

Take two cans of white beans, some tomato paste, sun-dried tomatoes and cream, and you’ve got this brilliant quick recipe from Alexa Weibel. If you’re old enough to remember when sun-dried tomatoes were an It ingredient — the late 1980s through the mid ’90s — then you might also recall that they deliver deep umami on each bite.

4. Spaghetti al Limone With Shrimp

Picture yourself having this for dinner tonight with a glass of white wine. Nice, right? The recipe is by Lidey Heuck, and it’s one of the simplest ways I know to have a fancy-feeling dinner. (Spaghetti lovers, in case you missed it: Julia Moskin recently examined and debunked five common myths about cooking pasta .)

5. Pan-Seared Asparagus With Cashews

As much as I love asparagus, it can be a letdown — limp and vegetal in a bad way — in the wrong recipe. Not so in this new dish from Melissa Clark, which aims for amped-up crunch with chopped nuts, coconut flakes and sunflower seeds added to crisp-tender pieces of asparagus. Adding a runny egg and rice makes this dinner, but it could also be a side dish to plain chicken or fish .

A generation after Nobu, Peruvian sushi blooms in Long Beach

On a recent Sunday night in Long Beach’s Bixby Knolls neighborhood, chef Eduardo Chang and his wife and business partner, Daiwa Wong, greeted guests at Sushi Nikkei as they filed through the busy dining room to celebrate the restaurant’s two-year anniversary.

Chang and Wong specialize in Peruvian-style sushi, including various types of tiradito, such as yellowtail with jalapeño and ponzu sauce or the catch of the day with tiger milk, aji amarillo, cancha (toasted corn) and sweet potato. But on this night the couple served a special menu of traditional Peruvian dishes not usually found at Sushi Nikkei.

“You have to try it,” Chang said to a table of three, touting the seco norteño, braised short rib slow-cooked in cilantro sauce. “It’s only here for tonight. We wanted to spoil our guests.”

And there were many guests to spoil.

Each table in the 50-seat restaurant was filled and more guests were crowded at the door. Some were regulars, and Wong hugged them with the familiarity of an old friend.

“When you come in,” said Lakewood resident Samantha Rollins, who has been a customer since the restaurant opened, it’s “like they welcome you into their home. Everything here is made with love, made with meaning.”

The connection between Peru and Japan goes back for generations, creating a unique thread in Peruvian life known as Nikkei culture. In two years, Chang and Wong have quietly built a following in Long Beach for their inviting dining room serving a sushi-focused take on Nikkei cuisine.

Peru established diplomatic relations with Japan in the late 1800s, and Japanese immigrants made their way to Peru when the industrial revolution made farming in Japan challenging. The migration began a long tradition of using Peruvian ingredients with Japanese culinary techniques.

Chang said he initially wanted to simply call the restaurant Nikkei — derived from the Japanese word Nikkeijin, which refers to Japanese emigrants from Japan, as well as their descendants. But the restaurant’s proper name is Sushi Nikkei — Peruvian Style.

“Here, people don’t know it so much,” said Chang. “People here would read it and not know what is Nikkei. So we added sushi, because they will recognize that.”

Chang and Wong opened their restaurant to share the Japanese-Peruvian cuisine Chang’s mother and grandmother cooked for him growing up. Along the way, the couple have become quiet ambassadors, sharing cultural history with diners, one sushi roll at a time.

“They see ‘Peruvian style’ and they think lomo saltado,” said Wong. “The challenge is to [raise] awareness of Nikkei cuisine.”

One of the signature dishes at Sushi Nikkei is a Parmesan scallop. The sweet scallop is brushed with lemon butter and draped over a perfectly formed nugget of rice, then topped with Parmesan cheese that gets toasted with a torch before being served. Parmesan and sushi might seem like an unexpected combination, but the smooth, rich bite is a close cousin of conchitas a la parmesana, a popular Peruvian dish of scallops broiled with Parmesan gratin.

It’s an unexpected Nikkei dish that in a way reflects the notion that Nikkei cuisine at its core is about constant motion and fusion.

“Nikkei food is not intended to describe just Japanese-Peruvian food,” says Jane Matsumoto, executive culinary arts director at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Los Angeles. “Nikkei food could be Japanese-American or Japanese-Mexican. Nikkei Peruvian is just one example of the many ways in which Japanese ingredients, Japanese techniques, Japanese foods and styles have been integrated into another culture.”

When groups re-create the food of their homeland in a new region, substitutions are made, flavors are replicated as best as they can be, and over time that new flavor becomes the tradition.

The Japanese influence in Hawaii resulted in dishes like Spam musubi, Matsumoto points out. There are even instances of amalgamation within the Asian diaspora in Latin America that can be traced in slightly more familiar Peruvian dishes, like lomo saltado. The 19th century brought indentured Cantonese workers to Peru and the steak and potato stir-fry is a staple of Chifa cuisine, a culinary tradition that blends Chinese and Peruvian culture.

Wong and Chang have their own family ties to Chinese culture. The couple first met in high school, at Colegio Peruano Chino Juan XXIII, a bilingual Catholic school in San Miguel, Peru. Wong’s mother, a teacher, and her father, a merchant, sent her and her brother to the school with the help of a scholarship, while Chang’s single mom worked as an accountant to support her two children.

“My husband and I, we were high school friends. We went to the prom together, but just as friends,” Wong said.

The two continued their friendship after graduation, but Wong left for the U.S. to find better opportunities and Chang attended Peru’s Cordontec culinary school. Wong gave birth to her first son and became a registered nurse, while Chang become an itamae sushi chef and eventually opened his first restaurant, Yume, in Lima.

Chang came to the States to visit and their friendship eventually developed into a romance. They wed in 2018. By this time Chang and his partners had opened a second restaurant in Peru, but in 2019 he came to the U.S. permanently to be with his wife.

“He already opened his successful restaurant, but because of me he decided to leave everything behind and start all over again,” Wong said.

The couple had their first child together and, although they were happy, Wong said she felt guilty about Chang leaving Yume. In Peru, he was an accomplished chef and restaurateur, but in California, he rose early each morning to make sushi for a local grocery store chain.

“Our plan was to open our own restaurant,” said Wong, “I always told him, ‘I know we can do it. I trust your hands.’”

They worked hard and saved money for three years to secure a space: a former Mexican restaurant on Atlantic Avenue in Bixby Knolls.

“It was very different,” Wong said. “We remodeled every corner.”

They swapped fiesta orange and yellow for a subdued black-and-navy color scheme. The remodel also included adding a mural, sketched in a crosshatched black-and-white style, of a Japanese farmer, who now overlooks the dining room at Sushi Nikkei. The artwork, by Peruvian artist Rudolph Castro, is an imposing reminder of the cuisine’s history, a silent guardian of tradition.

Sushi Nikkei opened in January 2022 and by August, it was in the Michelin Guide as a “point of view” restaurant.

“Since we opened, we’ve had people. Every weekend, it was packed,” said Wong. A second Sushi Nikkei location followed in Belmont Shore in December of the same year.

At both locations, the Parmesan scallop can be ordered on its own or as part of a tasting menu that includes three other types of sushi that are representative of Sushi Nikkei: Sweet Salmon, Tuna Power and Asian Shiromi. In addition to Parmesan, quinoa, cream cheese and aji amarillo peppers are among ingredients Chang incorporates into the Sushi Nikkei tasting.

“There are many people who don’t like the cream cheese in sushi, but with tuna, with salmon, it’s a good combination,” Chang said.

Cheeses, Matsumoto says, were incorporated into Japanese foods with the introduction of Western cultures and European cultures. The evolution of its usage continues today.

“Modern Japanese are putting cheese into Japanese croquets,” says Matsumoto. “I heard recently of someone putting cheese topping on okonomiyaki.”

For tiradito, another distinctly Japanese Peruvian tradition, raw fish is sliced like sashimi but spiced with ingredients like aji and lime rather than wasabi and shoyu.

Early Japanese immigrants also introduced Peru to the idea of eating a greater variety of seafood, including octopus and squid. A Sushi Nikkei menu item, Octopus Fire, is a culmination of both of these histories, presented as a row of thinly sliced octopus in citrus, parrillera sauce and a Peruvian salsa called chalaquita.

“Chalaquita is like Mexican pico de gallo,” Chang said.

However, the Dusty roll — crisp shrimp and avocado, topped with octopus and finished with Parmesan cheese and orange hot sauce — isn’t named for anything Peruvian or Japanese. It was inspired by the cartoon character the couple’s young son is obsessed with — the orange plane called Dusty in Disney’s 2013 animated film “Planes.” It’s their way of working their own history into their style of Nikkei cuisine.

In 2023, the family became five, welcoming a baby girl. Wong still works as a nurse during the day and manages the Bixby Knolls restaurant by night. Chang handles the Belmont Shore location while Wong’s mother helps with their children. On the evening of the special anniversary menu, however, they worked together at the Bixby Knolls location. Wong moved through the dining room as usual, while Chang stood at the pass reading tickets and sending food to tables.

In the two years since the couple began their restaurant journey, they believe they have helped push Nikkei cuisine forward in Southern California — a generation after Nobuyuki “Nobu” Matsuhisa popularized Peruvian sushi in the U.S., first at Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills and later at his Nobu chain of restaurants.

IN a wildly polyglot city -- where Midwesterners live next to Oaxacans; Taiwanese, Armenians and Russians mingle with Hollywood hipsters; and Tongans live side by side with native Californians -- is it any wonder that their various cuisines have blurred into each other too?

Chang and Wong said they are proud to introduce their heritage to a community that is excited to appreciate it, helping diners like Rollins have their first experience with Japanese -Peruvian culture.

“Coming here, you learn a lot through a culture’s food,” Rollins said.

The work of sharing Nikkei culture is ongoing because it is an identity — like any other — that is always evolving.

In the weeks after the anniversary, guests call hoping to order the seco norteño, hungry for the tender beef and the rice and beans served alongside it. Wong regretfully informs them it was just a special, but she hopes they will have more special menus — and many more anniversaries — in the future.

“How many more years do we want to be here?” Wong said. “We want to be here forever.”
