The temple though named after Lord Hanuman also enshrines two other deities, Shri Pretraj Sarkar and Shri Bhairav dev. All these deities are believed to be associated with spirits and ghosts. According to legend, the temple has a divine power that can cure physical pain and can cure the people under the influence of black spells or spirits. It is believed that the idol that is worshipped here has manifested on its own. A visit to this temple will make you believe in black magic, spirits, and ghosts. The devotees visiting the temple have to follow strict rules and rituals to seek blessings. Thousands of people under the influence of some evil black magic or spirit gather at the temple to offer regular prayers and seek relief from their condition. 

Mehandipur Balaji temple is filled with rituals that are quite different and strange from all the other temples. Unlike any other temple, the place does not echo with the sound of bells but the screams of possessed people. This is also one of those temples which does not offer Prasad. The devotees have to buy some black balls from outside the temple which are then thrown in the fire in front of the deities.

The locals here also advise tourists not to consume anything or take any food item or water from here. Talking or touching anybody is prohibited inside the temple as the person might be possessed and you might get affected. Also, it is believed that once you leave the temple, you should never look back because an evil spirit might capture you. It is said that you should leave the village just after visiting the temple. This place is not for the weak-hearted as the sights and sounds here might haunt you for a long time.

The Rituals of the Mehandipur Balaji Temple

There are certain rituals to be performed at this temple that must be carried out by each visitor in the proper sequence. These rituals are divided into three parts-

Durkhasta : This is the very first step where you have to buy Durkhasta laddoos available in the shops outside the temple. You will get two plates with 4-5 ladoos in each plate, the first plate is to inform God about your presence in the temple, and the second to request guidance and support in solving your problems.

The process of Durkhasta starts right after the Morning Prayer and lasts until the evening prayer. The devotees have to offer the plates to the priests standing in front of the idols, these priests pick up the ladoos and add them to the fire in front of the idol. The same ritual is to be repeated in front of the idols of Pretraj Sarkar and Kotwal Bhairav Ji. After all the offerings, the leftover ladoos in the plates are rotated anticlockwise over the person’s head 7 times and thrown away without looking back.

Arzi : Arzi is an offering for Pretraj Sarkar and Kotwal Bhairav Ji. This offering consists of 1.25 kilograms of laddoos, 2.25 kilograms of urad dal, and 4.25 kilograms of boiled rice. The Arzi is available in all the shops located just outside the temple and is to be offered to both the deities in separate containers.

Savamani: After doing the rituals and seeking blessings, if you ask for any wish from Balaji, you must promise that once the wish is completed, you will offer Savamani to the god. Savamani is a special offering that is specifically done on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The History of the Temple

  This temple with a strange aura and rituals has a fascinating history associated with it.

According to popular belief, the images of Lord Hanuman or Balaji and Pret Raja were self-manifesting and appeared amidst the Aravali hills. The area around the temple was once a dense forest with numerous wild animals. These images appeared at exactly the same place where the temple is currently situated.

As per another folk tale, it is believed that a renowned mahant saw Lord Shri Balaji, Shri Pretraj Sarkar, who is the king of evil spirits, and Shri Bhairav dev in his dreams. When he opened his eyes, he saw lord hanuman in front of him who ordered the mahant to be ready to serve his duty. After this incident, they started worshipping Lord Hanuman here and this eventually led to the construction of the temple.

The Architecture of the Temple

The architecture of the Mehandipur Balaji temple is inspired by the traditional Rajput architectural style. There are four chambers or sections in the temple, out of which two chambers have idols of Lord Hanuman and Lord Bhairav. The third and fourth chambers are the courts of Pret Raj, king of the spirits. These are where possessed people are treated by the priests. These people are chained and beaten as a part of the treatment. This section will leave you with an uncanny experience. You will see the people possessed by evil spirits banging their heads, harming themselves, and shouting and crying to the top of their voices. Pandupol Hanuman Temple, Sariska (Alwar)

This beautiful Hanuman temple is one of the most famous temples in Rajasthan. Surrounded by the world-famous wildlife sanctuary of Sariska in Alwar district, the temple has an interesting history linked to the Mahabharata period.

The history of the Pandupol temple is about 500 years old. It is believed that Pandavas were here during their 14-year exile. When their journey was interrupted as there was no path to move forward, Bhima hit the mountain with the blow of his famous gada to make way.

During their stay there, Draupadi saw a flower in a river stream and asked Bhima to get it for her. While searching for the flower in the stream, Bhima saw Hanumanji lying on the way in the guise of an old monkey. Bhima could not remove the monkey’s tail to move forward.

• The entry fee for visiting Pandupol Hanuman temple is INR 300 for cars and INR 50 for bikes

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the temple was closed for visitors. Since the visitors go through the Sariska National Park, they pay an entry fee and are allowed to visit the temple only on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

• Entry is allowed between 8 am and 3 pm

The new timings came into effect after the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted in July, 2021.

This famous Hanuman temple is situated in Dausa district of Rajasthan.

The Mehandipur Balaji temple is believed to be 1000 years old. It is believed that a mahant, known as Baba Ji, had a dream in which he saw three deities. The Lord Hanuman appeared in the dream and ordered the Mahant, to discharge his duties.

The mahant called the heads of 11 villages and shared the details of his dream with them. The place was full of wild animals and wild trees. The village heads removed the surrounding bushes, weeds, pebbles and stones. It was when Lord Hanuman appeared on the mountain with all his powers. Bhairav ​​Baba and Pretraj were also seen nearby at different places.

There’s an interesting legend about how the Mehandipur Balaji temple came into existence.

Long ago, Mehandipur was a dense forest in what is today Dausa, Rajasthan. Wild animals and villagers were living nearby the forest. And one saint in this village, Gosai Ji Maharaj, had an unusual dream.

One night, he starts walking toward the jungle in his sleep and sees some visuals. There were thousands of lamps, sounds of horses, elephants, and an army marching towards him. Then, they all bowed to the three deities: Shri Balaji Maharaj, Pretraj Maharaj, and Shri Bhairo Nathji. 

Afterward, they returned to where they came from, and Maharaj went to his village. Further, when he tried to sleep again, he got Darshan from Shri Balaji Maharaj, telling him to build a temple for the three powers he just saw.

And that’s how Mehandipur Balaji temple came into existence.

Deities Inside The Mehandipur Balaji Temple

The Mehandipur Balaji temple celebrates the child form of Shri Hanumanji, a prominent Hindu god. He is the main deity in this temple, along with two other powers, namely Shri Pretraj Maharaj and Shri Bhairo Nathji.

Since Lord Hanuman did a lot of activities (Lilayein) in his childhood at different places, this temple is known as “Balaji.” Further, this temple is also popularly known as the Ghata Mehandipur because it lies in the valley (Ghati), formed by two mountains.

Supernatural Evils & Exorcism in Mehandipur Balaji Temple

When I was researching and gathering info about this temple before visiting it, I was a bit scared and confused by the information. There were lots of videos and articles, enough to incite fear.

However, my perspective changed when I went to the temple. 

Yes, there are many possessed people and exorcism practices around here. But it’s also true that the sheer divinity of this temple does not harm the ones in good faith.

Further, National Library of Medicine has published a journal of a study done on the patients visiting Mehandipur Balaji temple in Rajasthan, India. You can read it for more interesting findings.

There were screams, people spinning their heads, hitting, or jumping on the floor. But in all honesty, all this was normal. Moreover, everything was getting dull when I heard the Shri Ram’s chantings echoing in the hall.

The enthusiasm among the people who came to have Darshan was contagious. Additionally, this exorcism practice isn’t visible in the main hall or nearby the seats of deities. Instead, you’ll see them in a dedicated hall and around the temple’s boundaries.

In conclusion? Forget those misleading YouTube videos and articles. You don’t need to worry about a thing here as long as you follow temple rules.

• This temple doesn’t accept Prasad. So, there’s no use buying it. Although, the shopkeeper does sell it. Further, if you do buy Prasad, don’t take it back to your home. You can distribute to beggars around or leave for monkeys at dedicated places.
• Don’t take food or filled water bottles back home from here.
• Don’t communicate with anyone when you’re inside the temple premises.
• Avoid eating non-veg, onion, and garlic before you visit this temple. Also, don’t eat these food items even after reaching your home for 
• Don’t look back when you leave the temple after getting Darshan. 
• Don’t laugh or giggle seeing people suffering from evil spirits.

Mehandipur Balaji Darshan Time & Aarti

Mehandipur Balaji timings are strict for visiting this temple. And please note the temple gets a massive crowd, so it’d be a good idea to stay ahead on time. I almost got rumbled in the evening crowd for seeing the Aarti.

I have seen people getting kilometers-long lines from 3-4 am to get Darshan and witness Aarti. Further, during Aarti hours, the road in front of the temple gets heavily crowded. We don’t recommend going into the crowd for safety reasons.

You can visit Teen Pahad Mandir after getting Darshan from Samadhi Wale Baba Ji, as it lies on the same route. Teen Pahadi Mandir is a group of highly revered Hindu temples situated on top of a mountain looking over three hills. 

It’s a ~2 km hike and worth visiting. As soon as you start hiking, you’ll come across several temples and mesmerizing views of the valley.
