Manfred Mann’s Earth Band (formed in 1971) is a British R&B, pop, jazz and rock band, formed by South-African born Manfred Mann, based out of London, UK.
As an aspiring jazz keyboardist, South-African born Manfred Lubowitz, changed his name to Manfred Mann and started a band of the same name. Initially an R&B group, Manfred Mann later altered their sound to be more accessible; breaking into international recognition with the covers “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” by the Exciters and “Sha La La” by the Shirelles. Mann’s subsequent band Manfred Mann Chapter Three took the group in a more jazz-fusion direction before the formation of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band in 1971.
The line-up consisted of Mick Rogers on guitar and vocals, Manfred Mann on synths and vocals, Colin Pattenden on bass, and Chris Slade on drums. The band took a new rock direction, this time making use of synthesisers as was clear on the group’s eponymously-titled debut album. From 1971 until 1976 the group line-up remained consistent and released six albums including “Glorified Magnified” in 1972, “Messin’” in 1973 and “Nightingales and Bombers” in 1975. The latter of which took its name from a WWII naturalist’s recording of a nightingale singing in a garden as bombers were flying overhead.
On top of crafting their own material, the group became known for their selection of covers by esteemed artists including Bob Dylan’s “Quit Your Low Down Ways” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Blinded By The Light” and “Spirit In The Night”. Manfred Mann Earth Band also proudly produced songs of social commentary, discussing such topics as slavery, mental institutions and science as a form of social control.
The band released another string of albums throughout the late ’70s and early ’80s including “The Roaring Silence”, “Watch” and the politically charged “Somewhere in Africa", recorded with number of African musicians after being banned from his native South Africa for supporting the anti-apartheid movement. The band underwent a hiatus in the late ’80s and early ‘90s however returned and produced covers by Paul Weller, Robert Cray and The Lovin’ Spoonful and continued their trend of extensive touring.
Live reviews
Manfred Mann is a wonderful South African musician who I have followed for many years, and when I found out about his band Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, I started listening to their tracks and fell in love with their progressive rock/jazz sound. Their alternative sound with an organ and synth is exciting and adds a new layer of diversity to the genre of their music.
They opened the show with one of their most well known tracks, Spirit in the Night, and then went on to play their cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Blinded By The Light, before tackling Soft Vengeance almost in its entirety. It was a great atmosphere, and they had everyone up on their feet for several songs, and singing along with them.
The band are super enthusiastic, and their energy was contagious to the rest of the audience. Form the moment they came out on stage they were shouting out to us in the crowd, asking if we were having a good time, encouraging everyone to sing, and just being great hosts. It was fantastic to see the extent of their talent in their performance, something that you just can’t grasp from simply listening to their recordings.

Radiant performance! Vivid, fun, and great musicians. I enjoyed every minute.
Manfred himself is incredible for a 75-year-old. Mick Rogers is a brilliant guitarist and a nice personality. Robert Hart has a good voice and sings with authority. Steve Kinch (bass) and John Lingwood (drums) form a tight and competent rhythm section.
This was my first live experience with the band and I really enjoyed the performance. They played all the big hits. These guys know how to give a good show and interact with the audience. See this band live when you can.
its been a long time ago now , but went twice to a concert in the Congres building in The Hague .
Never heard a band perform live this good , chris thompsen , as a the singer with a great voice .fantastic evenings .

The Manfreds
The manfreds return to the met following the huge success of their sixtieth anniversary tour in 2023..
They are considered one of the finest and most respected bands from the 1960s era. Their numerous hits were not just ‘pop’ songs, many were R&B based with an undercurrent of jazz – a very unusual but winning combination of playing style and substance.
As a result, their records have a timeless quality and, some sixty years on, The Manfreds , with original front man Paul Jones , will be performing many of their hits, including ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’ , one of the most popular and instantly recognisable songs of the ‘60s, and still the biggest audience pleaser at their concerts, along with a mix of jazz and blues covers and tracks from their individual solo albums.
Paul Jones , with his unique harmonica sound, will be joined by Tom McGuinness on guitar, Pete Riley on drums, Mike Gorman on keyboards, Marcus Cliffe on bass, and Simon Currie on saxophone/flute.

Gold Meets... Manfred Mann's Paul Jones - the full interview
The band originally performed from 1962 to 1969. They reformed as The Manfreds in 1991, and have carried on performing for over 30 years.
Fans will see the band perform their biggest hits, including 'Pretty Flamingo', '5-4-3-2-1', 'Ha Ha! Said The Clown', 'My Name Is Jack', 'The Mighty Quinn' and 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy'.
The Manfreds will also play a few Paul Jones, Mike d’Abo and Tom McGuinness solo hits, plus other surprise covers of their favourite R&B songs.
Paul Jones said: "What's this? Our Diamond Jubilee? Wow! People say to me: 'I bet you never dreamed you'd still be doing this after all these years / decades'; but the truth is that I always believed I'd be out here doing what I do until - and well beyond - this age.
"The only thing I didn't know was that I'd still be a Manfred, and (as Mike d'Abo frequently points out) we've got Tom McGuinness to thank for that.
"This tour is indeed a celebration: of the longevity of a concept that came together over a long time - and mostly of its own accord.”

The Manfreds Announce 60th Anniversary Celebration Maximum Rhythm ‘N’ Blues UK Tour
Legendary pioneers of Rhythm and Blues in the UK, The Manfreds (formerly known as Manfred Mann) have announced a comprehensive UK tour, celebrating a remarkable 60 years as one of Britain’s most respected bands.
A massive part of the 60s British Invasion, The Manfreds’ music still retains a timeless quality some 60 years on. As well as celebrating the band’s 60th , this tour will also mark the last opportunity for fans to see both original frontmen, Paul Jones and Mike D’Abo, on tour together. Joining Mike and Paul is original guitarist Tom McGuinness along with long standing Manfreds members Rob Townsend on drums, Marcus Cliffe on bass and Simon Currie on saxophone/flute. The band originally ran from 1962 until 1969 – defining the decade with their unique sound. Reforming as The Manfreds in 1991, the band have carried on performing together ever since for over 30 years.
Fans can expect many of the much loved hits, including Pretty Flamingo, 5-4-3-2-1, The One In The Middle, Come Tomorrow, Sha La La, Ha Ha! Said The Clown, My Name Is Jack, Fox On The Run, Mighty Quinn and Do Wah Diddy Diddy, one of the most popular and instantly recognisable songs of the decade and still the biggest audience pleaser at their concerts Alongside these classic chart toppers, The Manfreds will showcase a few Paul Jones / Mike d’Abo / Tom McGuinness solo hits, plus a few surprise renditions of their favourite Rhythm ‘n’ Blues numbers from over the years Ahead of the tour Tom said:
“It’s 60 years ago this December that I joined Manfred Mann and 30 years and more since we got together for a one-off gig to celebrate my 50th birthday, with no idea that it would lead to a long-term reunion. How lucky I feel to be once again on-stage making music with The Manfreds”.
Paul added: “What’s this? Our Diamond Jubilee? Wow! People say to me: “I bet you never dreamed you’d still be doing this after all these years / decades”; but the truth is that I always believed I’d be out here doing what I do until – and well beyond – this age. The only thing I didn’t know was that I’d still be a Manfred, and (as Mike d’Abo frequently points out) we’ve got Tom McGuinness to thank for that.
This tour is indeed a celebration: of the longevity of a concept that came together over a long time – and mostly of its own accord.”
Mike commented: “ I first became aware of Manfred Mann’s reputation with ‘5-4-3-2-1’ storming up the charts, Paul Jones oozing youthful confidence, the band – with a hint of academia about them – had a unique appeal. Little did I know that, in a couple of years , I’d be joining them as Paul’s replacement. What an incredible thrill and honour that was! Well… the good news is that The Manfreds are still doing it! Yes, we’re all back together again – Paul Jones, Myself & Tom McGuinness – belting out the hits we created all those years ago. What an amazing survival story.“ Tickets available: HERE TOUR DATES
