Kimberley waterfall Experiences with true north cruise

Kimberley coast cruises 2024

The very best of two destinations.

An adventure that combines the very best of two equally stunning destinations – the Kimberley coast and the Rowley Shoals! In the beginning your vista will be framed by layers of ancient geology and then your every moment will be awash in the vibrant colours of a coral wonderland. See all of the coastal icons and then immerse yourself in one of the world’s most-rare habitats!

This itinerary is provided as example only – prevailing conditions, local arrangements and indeed, what we discover on the day, may cause variation. Helicopter flights can be purchased additional to the indicated tariff as a package or individually. Please refer to the sailing schedule to determine if this itinerary is available on the TRUE NORTH or TRUE NORTH II.

Welcome Aboard

Welcome Aboard

Join our coach transfer in Kununurra – your “welcome aboard” the magnificent TRUE NORTH will be in the frontier town of Wyndham. Embarkation is at 1700 – time for a cocktail with your fellow adventurers before departing at approximately 1830. Dinner is served shortly after leaving port and then it’s an overnight steam to the King George River.

The King George Falls

The King George Falls

As soon as the tide is high enough, we’ll cross the sand bar at the mouth of the mighty King George to reveal a breathtaking river vista. Our journey upstream will take us to the very ‘jewel in the crown’ – The King George Falls. Here we anchor at the base of the Twin Falls and you will find endless places to explore. Take the helicopter to the top of the falls for a Kimberley highlight. In the afternoon discover the wreck of the Koolama and take a stroll in Tranquil Bay.

Eagle Falls

Eagle Falls

Today you will have an opportunity to see the “Bradshaws” – ancient rock art that pre-dates other examples of Aboriginal culture. In fact, they are possibly the oldest ‘paintings’ known to man. The heli-picnic at Eagle Falls is always a ‘big hit’ - another breathtaking helicopter flight and, TRUE NORTH’s mouth-watering fare alongside a picture-perfect waterfall in remote far-north Western Australia! The tenders will be busy exploring the local beaches and rivers and, we also visit an isolated site in the rainforest where a lone bomber crashed during WWII.

The Mitchell Falls

The Mitchell Falls

The Mitchell River is renowned for big barra and even bigger crocs! The adventure boats will head up river to scenic Surveyors Creek – a great place for a swim (no crocs here!) The fishers will stalk the elusive barramundi and there will be more opportunities for helicopter flights over ancient land including the spectacular Mitchell Falls! Then, join the crew for cocktail hour before experiencing another unique dining experience.

The Hunter River

The Hunter River

Wake this morning in the magnificent Hunter River. The Hunter is about as far away as you can get in Australia – a stunning river system that is lined with dense mangrove forests and surrounded by rainforest encrusted mountains. And, the Hunter has it all - fishing, mud crabbing, birdwatching and simply exploring “where few have been before!” Join one of our adventure boats for a closer look, it’s a challenging hike to Jackson Falls and, there’s even more splendour from the helicopter! In the afternoon we will sail into Prince Frederick Harbour and enjoy sunset drinks on picturesque Crystal Beach – enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres as you watch the sun descend on another action-packed day in the Kimberley!

Melaleuca Falls

Melaleuca Falls

Be amongst the first on deck and join an early morning fishing expedition, see more stunning rock art or join the ship’s naturalist in one of the adventure boats – all before a breathtaking helicopter flight to another picnic to remember – this time at beautiful Melaleuca Falls! Then join us for our pearl and diamond party! Enjoy a glass of bubbly whilst trying on exquisite pieces created by the artistes at Allure, Jewels of the Kimberley and Kimberley Fine Diamonds.

King Cascade

King Cascade

The scenery will astound and there are some not to be missed fishing spots as the TRUE NORTH graces the majestic Prince Regent River. At King Cascade we manoeuvre the TRUE NORTH right under the falls. Then it’s time for more ‘adventure in the tender’ – a chance to stretch the laces on your hiking boots and an opportunity to swim in yet another picture perfect billabong, or perhaps you’d like to venture further upriver to visit the spectacular ‘Amphitheatre’ waterfall. And the helicopter will be popular again when the first group of intrepid explorers returns from Jurassic Park!

Montgomery Reef

Montgomery Reef

It’s time for some hot fishing action at Three Ways. Then join guest and crew alike for a moderate walk to Ruby Falls and be rewarded with a refreshing swim in the large natural rock pool.

You will probably be enjoying lunch as we weigh anchor and set sail for Montgomery Reef! Montgomery is a unique ecosystem that must be seen to be believed – and see it you will – as 140 square miles of coral reef rises out of the ocean right before your very eyes! Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a privileged glimpse of another world! Turtles, dugong, manta rays and every imaginable sea creature abound, and the helicopter again puts all in perspective!

The Charnley Gorge

The Charnley Gorge

Even more high adventure today – the opportunity to ‘ride the tide’ through spectacular Charnley Gorge, to where the salt meets the fresh – is one of the Kimberley’s most hand-picked experiences! This is especially so if you then get a chance to sight-cast ravenous barra as they wait for the tide to spill into their billabong home away from home! Jacks, fingermark and threadfin will also be on the ‘list’ before returning to the TRUE NORTH for your overnight cruise to the magnificent Rowley Shoals!

Clerke Reef

Clerke Reef

We will arrive early at glorious Clerke Reef.

Sample the fruit platter and maybe indulge in a cooked breakfast before discovering the atoll’s huge lagoon and extensive outer reef. Snorkelers and divers will marvel at the crystal-clear waters teeming with life – clouds of fish and corals of every imaginable colour and shape. There will be plenty of opportunity for beachcombing on Bedwell Island, relaxed snorkelling in tropical waist deep water, world-class SCUBA diving on the outer reef or perhaps some “catch and release” lagoon fishing using eco-friendly tackle. Our qualified and experienced crew will be on-hand to personally introduce everyone to the delights of this pristine environment. When you’re not on excursion, relax on-board TRUE NORTH and indulge in our renowned cuisine – the alfresco bar and lounge will definitely be ‘the spot’ to witness your first spectacular Rowley sunset.

Nature's Aquarium

Nature's Aquarium

Start the day with a visit to the Aquarium! Forget the Great Barrier Reef – this is world-class snorkelling at its very best! Even if you’ve never put your head under water before – this is an absolute must. The water is only waist deep however the experience is literally “out of this world”! Brilliantly coloured corals, giant clams and more than 600 of the world’s most beautiful fish species at your fingertips! Don’t forget your underwater camera!

After another sumptuous lunch we’ll “crank-up the action” with something unique – high-speed snorkel drifts through the outer reef! Again our friendly crew members will be on hand to ensure that everyone gets to try this once-in-a lifetime experience – as many times as you like! Our anchorage tonight is in the “swimming pool like” waters of Clerke Lagoon – 300 kilometres off the coast of Australia!

Close Encounters

Close Encounters

Another day in paradise and now it’s time to experience the thrill of snorkelling on the outer reef! Outer reef snorkelling is a totally different experience – the sheer coral walls will take your breath away!

Close encounters with humpback whales, manta rays and sailfish are also on the agenda. Finish the day with sunset drinks on the beach and one of our famous Island Parties! Then it’s back to the ultimate comfort of TRUE NORTH and another perfect night in Clerke Lagoon – 360° stars reflected in a glassy ocean!

The Outer Reef

The Outer Reef

By now you will be addicted to snorkelling on the outer reef and your wish is our command! We’ll spend the entire day exploring the outer reef of this remote and untouched wilderness.

Then all too soon, it’s time for our overnight steam to Broome. Re-live what is guaranteed to be an experience of a lifetime as the Rowleys merge into a blazing western sky! Join the crew at the Captain’s Party and then enjoy “the best sleep of your life”.

Transfer to Broome

Transfer to Broome

Early morning arrival in Broome in-time to disembark at 0800 hours and transfer to the airport or your accommodation.

TRUE NORTH unveils major makeover ahead of 2024 season

TRUE NORTH unveils major makeover ahead of 2024 season

Multi-awarded TRUE NORTH has completed a major makeover for both their small ships, True North and True North II.

A deep dive into the unique Kimberley climate

A deep dive into the unique Kimberley climate

Dive into Australia’s Kimberley climate. Your ultimate guide to navigating this untouched wilderness, from majestic waterfalls to vibrant wildlife.

When is the best time to visit Rowley Shoals?

When is the best time to visit Rowley Shoals?

Discover the best time to visit Rowley Shoals for pristine snorkelling and diving. Explore untouched coral atolls with True North's luxury cruises.

Returning to International

True North’s founding director Craig Howson and managing director Chad Avenell, recently met with local representatives ahead of recommencing Indonesian itineraries in 2023. Watch the video above to discover how True North ensures smooth operation well in advance of departure.

Time to Book Ahead

Hear from someone who truly knows about the value of booking ahead. “Cheggers” has travelled on the TRUE NORTH more than anyone else!

True North Sails into 30 Years

True North Adventure Cruises - has sailed into 30 years of continuous operations. The now revered adventure-cruise operator first cruised Western Australia’s remote Kimberley coast during 1987 when founding director Craig Howson commenced fishing type charters along a coastline that was and still is largely inaccessible from land.

The Helicopter

Adding another dimension to the adventure, most cruise options on the TRUE NORTH feature an on-board helicopter! Carrying guests in air conditioned comfort, the ship’s helicopter provides unique opportunity to witness grandeur; unique opportunity to fish billabongs that have never been fished; unique opportunity to discover your very own wilderness!

Myles Pollard's Fishing Adventure

There is nothing better than a day out on the water, especially when the fish are biting! Fishing on-board the TRUE NORTH is a much-favoured activity both with guests who have never picked up a rod before and, with those who have "caught them all!” Our guides encourage everybody on-board to “give it a go” and the TRUE NORTH’s multiple adventure boats never fail to bring back a swag of ‘fishing tales’! Stories about the ladies who out-fish the boys are pretty common, humorous equipment failures also come to note on a regular basis, then there are the ‘birthday fish’, the ‘monster fish’ and of course, the ones that got away! Our guides have seen and heard it all! Watch the video to find out more about actor Myles Pollard's fishing adventure!

TRUE NORTH Impresses Again

The TRUE NORTH has once again impressed on the world stage coming second in the 2020 Traveller Made Brand Storytelling competition. Traveller Made is Europe’s largest travel consortium and its members represent the very best in luxury travel providers and suppliers. The group’s inaugural Brand Storytelling competition was an opportunity for leading travel brand’s to showcase “the story behind their brand” and, the competition attracted entries from some of the world’s most respected travel brands. In such esteemed company, True North’s marketing team was especially pleased to receive this additional acknowledgement.

Adventure En Plein Air

West Australian artist Jacob 'Shakey' Butler joined the TRUE NORTH earlier this season and discovered the Kimberley's raw beauty. As the artist in residence, Jacob set up his canvas on remote beaches, beside freshwater billabongs and on-deck surrounded by pindan-coloured gorges. Watch the video above to hear Jacob describing how the Kimberley inspires the art of adventure.

Catriona Rowntree Talks With Craig Howson

A commonly asked question is “When is the best time to see the Kimberley?” And the answer is “The Kimberley is always at its best!” However certain times of the year can make it easier to satisfy particular interest. For example, if you would like to see plenty of whale action then departures in August and September are definitely for you! From late July humpback and southern right whales reach the Kimberley after swimming-up the west coast to reach breeding grounds in the north and it’s very common for guests to get great views of whales breaching and basking on the surface.

The Lady M is one of the larger vessels cruising the Kimberley for the number of guests it accommodates.

We have a cruise to suit your schedule. Choose from the :

7 night Fishing Adventure explores the southern Kimberley region and give guests the chance to test their skills against the mighty Barramundi as well as other species of fish including Trevally, Mackerel, Fingermark Bream, Mangrove Jack and Sailfish.

Guide to Cruising the Kimberley

There are many outstanding cruising experiences on offer in Australia's Kimberley region.

Link Copied!

By Fleur Bainger

Two billion years of natural history are on show along the isolated Kimberley coast in  Western Australia . Waterfalls blow fine mist over clifftops, giant boab trees stand like proud sentinels and Aboriginal rock art hides in the crevices. Among all this age, there's the most sought after commodity: peace, best achieved while reclining on the deck of a cruise boat.

Multi-day tours, all covering roughly the same itinerary, depart from  Broome , Wyndham (via Kununurra) and sometimes  Darwin . Here are the top cruises in the Kimberley.

Boutique luxury: True North Adventure Cruises

True North Adventure Cruises, The Kimberley, WA © True North Adventure Cruises

True North Adventure Cruises, The Kimberley, Western Australia © True North Adventure Cruises

True North Adventure Cruises  have been operating for over 30 years, offering tours that promise intimate views and up-close encounters. The multimillion-dollar vessel, True North, hosts 36 people, retaining a boutique feel while offering a five-star hotel-style experience. An on-board helicopter whisks guests over waterfalls, islands and cliff edges. Choose from shorter, seven-day cruises, longer 14-day events or specialist expeditions focusing on coast and coral.

Barefoot luxury: The Great Escape Charter Company

Great Escape Charter Company, Kimberley, WA © The Great Escape Charter Company

Great Escape Charter Company, Kimberley, Western Australia © The Great Escape Charter Company

Family-owned and run,  The Great Escape Charter Company  has a 26 metre (85 foot) luxury catamaran that caters to just 14 guests, with six crew members (including an excellent chef) attending to their every need. Each room has a queen bed, flat screen TV and private bathroom. Importantly, a helicopter sits on the roof, providing access to those hard-to-reach places. There's also a spa on the front deck and wi-fi.

Big boat comforts: Silversea Cruises

King George Falls, Kimberley coast, WA © Tourism Western Australia

April and May are generally regarded as the best times to visit the Kimberley, as waterfalls are in full force after the wet season. However, any time within the cruising season (April to October) is bound to be special.

Silversea Cruises ' newly refurbished vessel, Silver Discoverer, delivers the ultimate big boat luxury experience. For the 120 passengers on board, all rooms have butler service and ocean views. There are lounges, a pool and poolside grill, a sundeck, two gyms and even a beauty centre. Zodiac boats ferry guests to terrestrial sites, fishing spots and narrow waterways. Helicopter excursions to places such as the four-tiered  Mitchell Falls  can be arranged and a flight to the  Bungle Bungles  is included. Historians, naturalists and geologists travel on board.

Eco-adventure: Kimberley Expeditions and Eco Abrolhos

Eco Abrolhos Cruises, Kimberley, WA © Eco Abrolhos

Eco Abrolhos Cruises, Kimberley, Western Australia © Eco Abrolhos

While almost all Kimberley cruises include a respectful appreciation for the environment,  Kimberley Expeditions  and  Eco Abrolhos  each offer a special focus. Both vessels are stable catamarans with shallow drafts, allowing them to nose right under waterfalls, meaning less jumping in and out of Zodiac boats to see things. They are owned and run by passionate couples who have been in the region for years and aim to tread lightly on the extraordinary nature they visit. On one of these cruises and you'll be joined by no more than about 38 other passengers, ensuring intimacy and camaraderie.

Traditional Cruising: APT

APT Kimberley Expedition Cruising, Kimberley, WA © Graham Werner

APT Kimberley Expedition Cruising, Kimberley, Western Australia © Graham Werner

Highly regarded touring company  APT  owns and operates two 'sister' expedition vessels in the Kimberley. Travel with a maximum of 100 guests and 75 on-board crew, plus an expert 10-member Expedition Team who provide valuable insights for the entirety of your cruise. Discover the reefs, coastline and remote gorges by Zodiac, inflatable boats that let you get close to the action. Plus, step ashore to explore remote locations. Benefit from the intimate on-board atmosphere while still enjoying the benefits of spacious suites, restaurants, bars, library, gym and salon. Both ships have internet access, and APT cruises include national park entrance fees, airport transfers, port charges, gratuities, all meals and select beverages while on board.

7 breathtaking sights to see in the Kimberley

Ten-night highlights: Coral Expeditions

Coral Expeditions, Kimberley, WA © Coral Expeditions

Coral Expeditions, Kimberley, Western Australia  © Coral Expeditions

30 years ago, when Coral Expeditions made the first exploratory cruises in the Kimberley they had to rely on hand-drawn ‘mudmaps’ and the knowledge of fishermen and early explorers to navigate the vast and unpredictable coastline. Today, with decades of experience behind them and in-house expert guides, maps, tidal charts, and landing notes, they use their knowledge to skilfully showcase the beauty and diversity of the Kimberley. Join a 10-night Kimberley expedition and witness the power of nature at the magnificent King George River and its towering twin falls, explore ancient rock art with knowledgeable guides, and witness diverse marine life and cascading waters at Montgomery Reef.

Targeted trip: Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures

If you don’t have a week or two to spare, and want to fly in and out to a specific part of the Kimberley coast,  Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures  may be your best bet. Following a scenic flight from Broome, its 12-person luxury houseboat departs from the fascinating  Horizontal Falls  and targets the thousand islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago over a four-night adventure. Helicopter excursions provide alternative views of the rocky red surfaces, and a new speedboat delivers thrilling experiences next to the remote landforms, as well as access to excellent fishing zones.

Intimate opulence: YOTSPACE superyacht voyages

Testimonials

We thoroughly enjoyed our adventures and were thrilled to see the waterfalls flowing so well! Thanks to all of your great crew and we will certainly recommend Odyssey Expeditions to friends and family!

Kind regards

I would just like to say the trip Gillian and I had was simply put, sensational.  The other passengers were great and the crew, Mike, Bob, Ben, Cindy and Jayden were faultless.  I now have to try and remove the 3 kgs that Cindy's fab meals put on.  I will certainly recommend the Odyssey to anyone

Dear Odyssey,

I wish to let you know how wonderfully we were looked after by Cat, Bob, Jayden. Kane and Jesse and others involved in giving us a lifelong experience in the beauty of the Kimberley coast. They went out of their way to make sure that we were safe, happy, yet encouraging us to benefit from the most beautiful places I think I have ever seen, and I have been to many parts of the world. The kindness shown to me personally was beyond the call of duty. Thanks to the captain and each member of the crew I was able to do well beyond my expectations.

Please pass on this message to these lovely people. The beautiful Odyssey experience will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

Our warmest wishes and gratitude go to each and every one of you.

Thank you for the information regarding the photos.

Thanks also to you and your entire team for providing us with a fabulous experience and the chance to make new friends with the passengers, and the crew.

Thanks also for looking after our car and caravan while we were on board.

We really enjoyed the experience of the Kimberley from the ocean made all the more special by the work of the crew on board.

Best wishes to you and all the Odyssey team.

Just a quick note to thank you for looking after Jane and I on our Odyssey adventure. Truly an unforgettable experience that made my 65 th birthday celebration a wonderful memory. Great food, itinerary and company. I’ve already recommended it to our friends who have been keen to find out about our trip.

All the best for the season

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for an outstanding cruise and for the extra care your staff took with Shirley because of her Alzheimer’s. We both had a sensational time and will certainly consider doing one again. We have also recommended it to our friends.

Best wishes to you

Hi Odyssey,

Norm and I would like to thank you and all at Odyssey Expeditions and especially our Skipper Cat and her Crew for a most amazing cruise to show us the many treasures of the Kimberley Coast. Surely a very memorable trip.

We will be pleased to Highly Recommend Odyssey Expeditions to anyone who may be interested in cruising the Kimberley.

We thank you for your professionalism in organising such a trip and the care and attention we received from a well trained Crew.

Once the air has been cleared of the ‘dreaded virus’ we hope that you will be up and running to once again showcase the wonderful treasures of the Kimberley Coast to others, yes it is a Lifetime Experience.

Thanking you again

The Kimberley Cruise Centre was born in Broome in the late 90’s. After cruising the Kimberley Coast and experiencing spectacular land and seascapes like nowhere else on earth, I realised that this was a truly special place and I wanted others to share this same experience. I was struck by Psalm 24.1-2

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him. For he laid the earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths.”

KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION CRUISES

Welcome to the otherworldly Kimberley. Tucked along the northwestern corner of Australia, the Kimberley is one of the world’s last wild frontiers, from rugged sandstone peaks and gushing waterfalls, to desert expanses, sunken mangrove forests, and everything in between. Cruise through Montgomery Reef as the tides rush out, leaving sea turtles dotting their heads in its midst. Search for a lustrous, masterfully cultivated pearl on a local pearl farm. Splash through the spray of King George Falls, or take to the skies in an amphibious Mallard aircraft to watch tawny sharks swim below. Better yet, engage with the original land-owning communities and their cultural rites, including guided showings of the unique Gwion Gwion artwork they have curated for centuries.

Crystal-clear waters and gleaming pearls aside, our Kimberely expeditions stand out to guests who want to travel Australia, but also desire to expedition off the beaten path. Whether you are a well-seasoned traveler, wildlife enthusiast, natural history buff, or are simply seeking a new adventure in one of the most pristine places on Earth, experience this unique corner of the world with Seabourn.

Included Expedition Experience

King George Falls

Prepare for the highlight of your trip, cruising with our Expedition Team on a ZodiacŸ to explore the highest twin waterfalls in Western Australia. They will skillfully maneuver the canyon that the river carved nearly 2 billion years ago, flanked by mesmerizing sandstone cliffs, to the thundering 250-foot falls that will plunge into the waters in front of you.

This stop is full of beautiful, secluded beaches and tiny islands to explore. The real draw, though, is seeing the Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw rock art galleries that cover walls and caves in the area. Take a ZodiacÂź ride to Jar Island to see some of the oldest art in the world. Your Expedition Team will give you an interpretation of the drawings and a look at the fascinating history that accompanies them.

Montgomery Reef

Contemplate the raw transformation of the world’s largest inshore reef as you witness it appear and dip beneath the surface in some of the biggest tidal changes on Earth. As you explore one of the ‘greatest natural wonders of the world’, you’ll search for incredible marine wildlife in their natural habitat from your Zodiac¼ – dolphins, octopuses, fish, reef sharks, turtles, sea snakes and more.

Talbot Bay Horizontal Waterfalls

Expect the unexpected amongst the spectacular rock formations and lush mangroves. Most waterfalls cascade vertically, but here tides push intense currents between narrow gorges to create a horizontal effect.

Featured Included Shore Excursions

Kuri bay pearl farm, traditional face painting ceremony, el questro park.

Why adventure cruising on a small ship is the best way to see Australia’s Kimberley region

Diversity Charters at King George Falls. Photo / Diversity Charters

Small-group adventurer cruises are becoming increasingly popular in the Kimberley’s Broome region because they’re a unique way to experience this remote part of Australia, writes Linda Hanan

Western Australia’s Kimberley coast is famous for its dramatic landscapes and having an abundance of water, and there’s no better way to experience the region than on a cruise. Smaller-vessel adventure-style cruises are becoming increasingly popular as they’re a unique way to experience this remote part of the country. If you’ve been thinking about taking the plunge to discover more about this iconic destination across the water, here’s why you should consider adventure cruising on a smaller vessel.

Small numbers are a highlight of a small cruise

Small group numbers are a highlight of these cruises, with vessels taking between 12 and 36 passengers (depending on the cruise operator). Numbers like these provide a good indication that there’s going to be no crowds to beat while you’re on board or during excursions. Think of it as a more intimate and casual style of cruising compared to being on the more typical larger-style ships. Getting to know fellow passengers and crew quickly is another advantage of travelling with a smaller group, and the interaction between passengers and crew can be likened to travelling with good friends.

READ MORE: Australia’s Kimberley coast: One of the world’s great wildernesses

Small ships get you to places that larger ships can’t

Kimberley’s staggering 12-metre tides are the second largest in the world, so it’s an area where smaller vessels have a big advantage. These vessels get you where the larger ships can’t as they’re able to cruise rivers and tributaries closer to the mainland. That’s a mighty benefit when you can be surrounded by dramatic scenery while up close and personal with towering ancient cliffs as the vessel glides along secluded rivers. You’ll likely have more time on excursions as well, as you don’t need to be transported for long distances by tenders, which can often be the case with larger ships.

Cruising times and itineraries

The cruising season is brief, running for six months between mid-March and late August to coincide with dry season timing in Australia’s north . If you’re crunched for time, cruises start at six days, although 8-14 days are more popular. The shorter cruises lasting 6-9 days leave from the laid-back resort town of Broome in the Kimberley’s west, or one of the region’s major rivers to the area’s north. These cruises take in some of the region’s highlights and may include a breathtaking light-aircraft flight to experience the Kimberley from the air. The longer 14-day cruises depart from Darwin, Wyndham/Kununurra and Broome (or vice versa). Often referred to as an “ultimate” cruise, the itineraries between Broome and Wyndham/Kununurra (or vice versa) are the best option if you’re looking to spend the maximum possible time on Kimberley waters. Each cruise operator has their own set itinerary, but it’s not uncommon for skippers to change course or have spontaneous stops to get passengers closer to the action.

Adventures everyday

Adventure is the name of the game and cruises of this calibre have it in spades. Unlike a larger ship’s sheer size that prevents it getting close to the mainland, you’re well placed in the thick of things and get right up close on a smaller vessel. And while you can choose your own daily adventures, it’s possible to be off the vessel up to three times a day for a variety of experiences the region is renowned for. Activities include daily visits to gorgeous refreshing waterfalls and swimming in picture-perfect waterholes that very few ever get to witness and are a delight for the senses. While bushwalking to remote historical WWII wrecks or visiting unique 40,000-year-old indigenous art sites that are only accessible by water - guaranteeing they’re visited by very few.

Visiting Wanjina art sites along the Kimberley coast. Photo / Linda Hanan

If fishing is your thing, you’ll be completely in your element when cruising the Kimberley coast. This is one of the most popular activities all over Kimberley as the region teems with a vast array of aquatic life. Have you ever wanted to catch a barramundi? These elusive fish are prized all over Australia’s north and grow to more than a metre, with most small vessels having their own secret fishing spots they share with passengers. Your chances really don’t get much better while fishing in the region’s coastal rivers, and you’re well and truly in the box seat to fulfil that dream. And whether you’re a keen fisherman or simply happy to dangle a line, you don’t need to supply anything as all the fishing gear is included. Although the aquatic action doesn’t stop there; seafood doesn’t get much fresher when cruise activities include feasting on cooked mud crabs collected from mangroves and succulent oysters prised off rocks from a secluded island.

Kings Cascades’ waterfall showers. Photo / Diversity Charters

Experience the ship’s every luxury by night

After a day of adventure and activities, luxury awaits you back on deck. As the sun begins to dip, being up front on the bow is the place to be. An intimate setting of chatting to new friends with a drink in hand while watching a spectacular Kimberley sunset is something to behold. While passengers are taking in the last of the daylight, the onboard chef prepares gourmet meals (including the delicious seafood caught during the cruise), with meals cooked to an individual’s liking.

And while you may be cruising on a smaller vessel, that certainly doesn’t mean you’re cramped for space. With fewer passengers onboard, there’s plenty of room to relax and retreat in the lounge, on the bow and other deck areas, or from the comfort of your cabin. You can also expect itineraries to be carefully curated, ensuring passengers soak up as much of the dramatic Kimberley coastal and tributary landscape during daylight hours. At times, skippers take advantage of steaming through the night, with passengers waking up so close to towering ancient rich-red sandstone cliffs you feel you could reach out and touch them.

With a growing focus on the environment and sustainable travel practices, the popularity of cruising on these types of vessels will only continue. Choosing the right adventure cruise really comes down to how long you’d like to cruise for, what you’d most like to see and experience, and when you can travel. With all the benefits of small-vessel adventure cruising along with their points of difference, book well in advance to secure your preferences as cruises sell out quickly.

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.
