Plan Your Holiday To Australia’s North West

Dimalurru (tunnel creek) national park, dimalurru (tunnel creek) national park is western australia's oldest cave system., part of the same ancient devonian reef system as bandilngan (windjana gorge) and danggu geike gorge, the cave has been carved out by the waters of dimalurru (tunnel creek) flowing beneath the napier range..

You can walk 750 metres into the tunnel, wading through freshwater pools. The cave features many beautiful formations, including stalactites and stalagmites, and is also home to a variety of bats, olive pythons and freshwater crocodiles. To experience the cave, take a reliable torch, wear old sneakers and be prepared to get wet – the water is mainly just over knee height but can be higher.

Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) is a site of cultural significance for the local Bunuba people, and you can visit the cave system with a cultural guide to gain insight on the spiritual significance of the area.

The Bunuba leader Jandamarra frequented the area around Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) and Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek), and he died at the entrance to Tunnel Creek on 1 April 1897.

To visit with a local Aboriginal guide and learn the significance of this area to the local Bunuba people, and the legend of Jandamarra, take a 1 day 4WD tour from Derby.

How to get there

Access to the park is via unsealed roads, approximately 35 kilometres southeast of Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park or 90 kilometres from Fitzroy Crossing. Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park is a day-use area only, with facilities limited to toilets and an information shelter. No overnight camping is permitted and access is limited to the dry season only.

Day and extended tours which include Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) and Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) operate from Derby and Broome.

WINDJANA GORGE AND TUNNEL CREEK TOUR

This Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek Tour is worth every penny, taking in three of the most iconic Kimberley features.

Departing:     07.00 AM

Returning:      10.00 PM

Duration:       15 hours

Next tour:      Contact us for details or see similar tours below

The tour travels east from Broome into the fascinating part of outback Australia, known as the Kimberley region. We head over the Willare Bridge, crossing the mighty Fitzroy River, for our morning tea break.

TOUR DETAILS

We then head to one of the Kimberley’s most famous landmarks, the Boab Prison Tree, once used to house convicts. Whilst here view Myalls Bore.

Heading through the Kimberley Cattle country we continue along the famous Gibb River Road arriving at Windjana Gorge, for a scrumptious picnic lunch. Regarded as a classic world geological feature, the gorge is a renowned freshwater crocodile spotting site. Keep an eye out for wildlife hiding in the Lennard River, which runs through Windjana Gorge. The gorge’s limestone walls rise more than 100 metres and it is home to fossils of shells and sea creatures.

Afterwards, head to Tunnel Creek, a 750-metre long flooded cavern. On this great adventure walk, wade through knee to thigh high water and hear the story of Jandamarra. The tunnel features many beautiful formations including stalactites and stalagmites and is also home to a variety of bats, olive pythons and freshwater crocodiles.

Enjoy a swim at the end of the tunnel in a waterhole before heading back for afternoon tea and onwards back to Broome with a stop enroute for dinner (at your own expense). The approximate time of arrival is at 10:00pm. A drop-off to your hotel is included.

Tunnel Creek (Dimalurru) National Park

Tunnel Creek National Park  is one of my three favourite national parks in the Kimberley. I recommend you do not skip this one!

The small and unusual park is not far off the beaten track, you don't need a four wheel drive to get there and it's great fun to explore.

But  you do need a torch ...

Tunnel Creek National Park

About Tunnel Creek National Park

Tunnel Creek National Park covers all of 91 hectares in the  Napier Range , a range that can also be seen at  Windjana Gorge . It is made of limestone and is what remains of an ancient reef system which existed here in the Devonian period (that means 350 - 375 million years ago).

The main feature of the park is of course the  750 metre tunnel  that a creek has worn through the Napier Range. The tunnel is the  oldest cave system in Western Australia . It became famous in the late 1800s. Aboriginal leader and "outlaw" Jandamarra (better known as "Pigeon") was using the "Cave of Bats" (also called "Pigeon Cave" = Tunnel Creek) as his hideout. After years of playing hide and seek with the police he ended up being killed in front of it, by another Aboriginal tracker, in 1897.

You can read  Pigeon's story  here.

Getting There

Halfway along Tunnel Creek

Tunnel Creek National Park is about  30 km south east of Windjana Gorge . That means you can visit the two together in one day. The Windjana Gorge National Park includes a campground, so it's very convenient to spend one night right there.

If you don't like camping then you are in for a pretty long day...

You can  reach Tunnel Creek from either Derby  (180 km)  or Fitzroy Crossing  (115 km). No matter from which side you approach, it will take you two to two and a half hours, as a big part of the trip is a corrugated dirt road, the Leopold Downs Road.

The Leopold Downs Road connects the Great Northern Highway with the Gibb River Road . You can use it to cut across from one to the other and visit Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge on the way.

Not driving yourself? There are  day tours  from Fitzroy Crossing or Derby. Just contact the  Kimberley Tourism Information Centre  there.

Exploring The Tunnel

Tunnel Creek National Park is a day use only park. It has a small parking area, an information shelter, a bush toilet, and ... that's pretty much it.

A short path takes you to  the entrance of the cave , and I find even this short walk and the entrance quite impressive.

The wall of the Napier Range is towering above you and you have to climb over and squeeze between big boulders to get to the cave.

The entrance cave

The opening is like a big hall in the rock. At the back of it the tunnel starts. If you are one of those people who don't like tight spaces and think they might get a bit claustrophobic you don't need to worry.

The tunnel is dark, but it is very spacious . Huge, actually...

The start of the tunnel

There are several permanent  pools of water  on the ground that  you will have to wade through .

At the start of the dry season they can be quite deep, and in the middle of the season they are very chilly.

You won't get out of wading, so make sure you  wear shoes that can handle it .

For some reason most information materials make the standard recommendation of "sturdy walking boots".

My recommendation is, if you like your boots, leave them in the car. Take some sneakers or plastic sandals or the like.

Wading through Tunnel Creek

But most importantly,  take a good torch .Many people use a little headlamp instead. Those are good, too. Whatever you use, take something with fresh batteries.

I found the walk to be much shorter and easier than I had expected. And more fun and interesting than I had expected.

Don't forget to shine your torch around the walls and the ceiling lots. There are little waterfalls coming over the ledges on the sides and huge stalactites are dangling from the ceilings.

Stalactites on the impressive ceiling of Tunnel Creek

About a third or half of the way  the ceiling has caved in  so you get a break and  some daylight . Little bats are flitting in and out of the dark and tree roots are growing through gaps in the ceiling.

Half way along Tunnel Creek

And then it's back into the dark ... Remember to also shine your torch into the - somewhat murky - water. You can discover many interesting things in there as well.

There are fish and apparently the odd little freshwater crocodile (harmless, just don't try to pick them up,) and also something that ... well, I never found out what it was. Something like an eel or a water snake. Hey, it was dark, and as I said, the water was a bit murky because other people had already walked through it. So I lost it and couldn't find it again. I would love to know what it was.

(A reader has since let me know that he saw a black eel in there. So I guess that's what I saw, too.)

It's really nice to come out on the other side of the range. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the creek is murmuring ... Sure, they were doing all that before as well, but you seem to enjoy it a lot more after having spent some time in the cool dark tunnel.

(Which you then have to wade through once more. There is no path over the top of the range, only under.)

The end of the tunnel

All in all this is  a fantastic little trip and great fun . Whenever I get a chance to talk to travellers who have done the big once around the Kimberley trip I ask what they enjoyed most. If they've been to Tunnel Creek they always mention it as one of the top things they did.

So make sure you pack that torch!

The fountains of Peterhof

#Attractions #Peterhof #Sightseeing #Parks

One of the main distinguishing features of the Peterhof fountains is the original arrangement of a conduit. Unlike Versailles, this grandiose construction works without pumps and other water-pressure facilities. Water is supplied from numerous natural and artificial ponds, nourished by underground sources and springs.

The Grand cascade

At first, Peter I had planned the ponds of the Upper garden to be the water source for the Grand cascade and its fountains, but soon the tireless ruler, who personally investigated the area, found additional sources of water, which situated in the neighborhood of the future Peterhof Park. The nature of the terrain enabled the creation of a system of conduits, in which the water flowed by gravity from dozens of ponds, located above the Lower Park and the Upper garden.

Thus, all 4 cascades, and 191 Peterhof fountains (including the Grand cascade water cannons) are fed by ponds of Ropshinsky hills (which are located at a distance of 24 kilometres), as well as English, Meadow, Olgin and other ponds (18 ponds overall) and many streams and sources. All of these sources combine into a complex system of sluices and canals with total length of 40 kilometers. The most surprising fact is that the system of water pipelines constructed by the order of Peter I and with his personal participation operates to this day.

“The most notable of all the Peterhof fountains is spectacular and majestic Grand cascade”

The most notable of all the Peterhof fountains is spectacular and majestic Grand cascade. This gilded splendor includes 255 sculptures, bas reliefs and other architectural structures, as well as 64 fountains with 138 water jets soaring skyward. The focus of the entire composition is the famous gilded “Samson tearing the lion’s mouth”, and in the center of the cascade there is a Lower grotto with a viewing point decorated with golden sculptures and marble bas-reliefs.

Another cascade fountain, named Checkerboard hill, looks like a bright spot on green background. 20-meter speed checker board with two mysterious caves that are guarded by three dragons is sometimes also called the Cascade of dragons. On both sides of the construction there are staircases, decorated with sculptures of white marble. At the beginning of the World War II, the sculptures had been removed and hidden, while the cascade itself was completely destroyed by the Nazis.

The “Favorite” fountain

Like many years ago, the moving fountains are extremely popular among the visitors of Peterhof Park. These include the “Favorite” fountain, created in 1725. It depicts quacking ducks floating in a circle, and a little dog that unsuccessfully tries to catch them. It is a good sign if you lucky enough to throw your coin right at the duck’s back and if the coin remains there. So despite its modest size, park staff daily extracts a lot more coins from the “Favoirte” than from any other Peterhof fountain.

Today Peterhof is the most popular of all the Petersburg suburbs. Its palaces and fountains impress the most sophisticated travelers. Each of Peterhof fountains is a jewel in its unique and luxurious collection. If you want to find yourself in a dreamland, come to Peterhof and take a walk in its enchanting parks among fabulous fountains.

The Fountains of Peterhof

The fountains of Peterhof are one of Russia's most famous tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors every year. Fountains were intrinsic to Peter the Great's original plans for Peterhof - it was the impossibility of engineering sufficiently powerful jets of water that prompted him to move his attentions from the Strelna site to Peterhof - and subsequent generations competed with their predecessors to add grander and ever more ingenious water features to the parkland surrounding the Grand Palace.

The most famous ensemble of fountains, the Grand Cascade, which runs from the northern facade of the Grand Palace to the Marine Canal, comprises 64 different fountains, and over 200 bronze statues, bas-reliefs, and other decorations. At the centre stands Rastrelli's spectacular statue of Samson wrestling the jaws of a lion. The vista of the Grand Cascade with the Grand Palace behind it, the first sight to great visitors who arrive in Peterhof by sea, is truly breathtaking. The Grotto behind the Grand Cascade, which was once used for small parties, contains the enormous pipes, originally wooden, that feed the fountains.

Elsewhere in the park, the range and diversity of fountains is astounding, from further monumental ensembles like the Chess Cascade and the Pyramid Fountain, to the ever-popular Joke Fountains, including one which sprays unwary passers-by who step on a particular paving stone.

The official opening of the fountains at Peterhof, which usually takes place at the end of May, is an all-day festival, with classical music, fireworks and other performances, as each section of the park's fountains is turned on one by one.
