best portable blender

In 2024, our top recommendation is the  Blendjet 2 personal USB blender. Its convenient portability, 16-ounce capacity, ability to make 20 beverages per charge, powerful motor, and vibrant design make it a standout choice.

Here are more reasons:

  • Powerful motor – crushes ice and hard nuts
  • Can make anything from perfect smoothies, protein shakes, cream frozen lattes, milkshakes, slushies, baby food, sauces, and more – you get a new recipe every week
  • Self-cleaning and water-resistant

Are Portable Smoothie Blenders Any Good?

are portable blenders any good

Portable personal blenders are usually small, cordless, battery-operated blenders for personal use , designed to make your smoothies, protein shakes, and even your margaritas – on the go.

You can also use a battery-operated blender to chop, mix, whip, grind, and blend small quantities of food.

The best portable blenders perform just as well as full-size home blenders and often offer innovative elements and features that make them even better.

How’s that?

Well, here are the unique benefits of portable blenders:

Portable Blender Benefits

1. Simple to Operate

Rechargeable blenders are convenient and very easy to use, and the best ones come with accessories that are easy to detach and clean.

They are all lightweight and small, without any tangled cords around them.

2. Time-saving

As long as you charge a personal blender in advance, you can make your favorite smoothie anywhere – in your car, on the way to work, hiking, or at the airport – in just a few minutes.

(👉See the best mini rice cooker for travel/personal use)

Since portable blenders are smaller, the blender speed is slower, but this won’t matter since you won’t need it for “heavy-duty” work and large quantities, so it will not take long to make a smoothie.

The 7 Best Portable Blenders for Smoothies (Under $50)

Here are the results of our 15-hour research and personal testing:

1. Blendjet 2 Portable Blender – Best USB Blender Bottle

belndjet one portable blender review

  • Dimensions – 3″ x 3″ x 9″
  • Capacity – 16 oz (33% more than the original model)
  • Battery life – 15+ blends

😍 Pros – can blend frozen fruit and big chunks, crushes ice, has safety features, BPA free, new model is quieter, comes with a recipe book

😣 Cons – the container is relatively small

✅ $49   at Blendjet (free worldwide shipping)

The original Blendjet One blender blended 8-12 beverages per charge (which takes 2.5 hours), and the 6 stainless steel blades were so powerful that they could crush ice.

The strong 5V motor did not overheat thanks to the built-in safety feature that keeps it from heating, and it came with a strainer that filters out the extra pulp, and a convenient carrying strap.

blendjet 2 review

The newest model, the Blendjet 2 , has a larger, 16-ounce capacity, blends 20 beverages per charge, and is water-resistant (so you don’t have to worry about getting liquid in the USB-C).

Also, the stainless steel blades are offset from the base’s center, creating a “tornado” effect that blasts the ingredients to the back of the jar and results in much better blending.

The motor is powerful and the battery has doubled capacity compared to the first model.

How Do You Wash the Blendjet?

The Blendjet has a self-cleaning capability, and all you have to do is add a drop of soap, and some warm water, and blend for a few seconds. Now it’s ready and clean for your next blend!

✅ Available   at Blendjet ($49 with free shipping and a free recipe book)

2. Oster Portable Blender (Blend Active) – Best for Protein Shakes

oster portable blender

  • Dimensions – 7″ x 3.5″ x 3.5″
  • Capacity – 10 ounces
  • Battery life – 10+ blends

😍 Pros – sleek design, nonslip, has a drinking lid to sip on the go, strong motor, safety features, easy to use

😣 Cons – a relatively small amount of shake, can not handle harder vegetables and hot drinks

✅ $32 on Amazon

The Oster Blend Active portable blender has a USB-rechargeable battery that is supposed to last for 10 blends on the go when fully charged and is a small, sleek, and simple-to-use personal blender.

However, when we tested it, we found that the charge lasted for only 2 blends.

You can drink straight out of the BPA-free bottle with the silicone drinking lid, and the non-slip sleeve gives you a good grip for a sip on the go.

However, users say this only works for softer fruits (frozen as well), and the smoothie amount you get is only 8 ounces.

If you want a larger shake or to make several servings – this is not for you.

✅ Available on Amazon ($32) and at Walmart ($25)

3. Hamilton Beach Personal Blender – Best Budget

hamilton beach personal blender review

  • Dimensions – 4″ x 3.5″ x 12″
  • Capacity – 14 ounces
  • Battery life – no battery

😍 Pros – powerful, crushes ice, stainless steel blades, one-button operation, good as stationary too, no leaking

😣 Cons – does not work well with hot drinks, struggles with fibrous fruits, kale, and nut butter, no USB charging

✅ $20 on Amazon

The Hamilton Beach portable blender operates with a simple one-touch button and makes it easy to blend shakes, smoothies, marinades, salad dressing, and baby formula – on the go.

It serves as a stationary blending jar in blending mode and a detachable travel mug with a lid   – that lets you drink straight from the jar , and fits in most car cup holders.

The 175 motor and the stainless steel blades have ice-crushing power and the travel lid allows you to “blend and run” – wherever you are.

The BPA-free jar and lid are dishwasher safe.

How to Use a Portable Blender

Here are a few tips to know before you use a portable blender bottle:

  • Break the ice into smaller pieces.
  • Start with the liquids, then add the rest.
  • Clean and dry the blender after each use.
  • Do not microwave the blender, it’s not made to use in the microwave.

How Long Does the Battery Last on a Portable Blender?

On average, most portable blenders can blend 10-20 times on a single charge.

The battery life also depends on the power of the motor and the type of ingredients being blended.

For example, blending tougher ingredients such as ice or frozen fruits may require more power and drain the battery faster.

How Do You Clean a Portable Blender?

Most portable blenders are dishwasher-safe. All you need to do is detach the parts and let the dishwasher do its work.

In case your product is not dishwasher-safe, you separate the detachable parts and soak them in water with a little bit of dish soap.

This way the stains will easily come off with a single wipe.

Some small blenders, such as the Blendjet 2 , feature a self-cleaning mode, where you only add a bit of soap and water and run the blender for a minute for an easy clean.

Are a Blender and a Food Processor the Same?

Although blenders and food processors have blades that spin at very high speeds, they are a little different.

A blender is commonly used to make liquid products such as smoothies and shakes.

On the other hand, a food processor is used for tasks like cutting and slicing fruits and vegetables or mixing dough.

In the last few years, gym bunnies, campers, and people with compact kitchens have discovered just how useful portable blenders can be. Cordless models don't need any connection to an outlet; they are compact enough to fit in most handbags and backpacks; and they'll be able to tackle making smoothies, juices, dips, salad dressings, sauces, batters, and more. How do I know? I've tested them all.

Alongside a team of experts, I've put the best portable blenders through exactly the same tasks as the best standard blenders on the market. I don't think you should have to make any compromises when you downsize, so the models in the list below can make a silky smoothie (even if you add lots of fibers and seeds), delicious dips, and lump-free protein shakes.

After using models from Ninja, BlendJet, Nutribullet , and Cuisinart, I've found the best six on the market. Our top pick is the Ninja Blast , which also happens to be one of the cheapest, but we've got the details of the best ones for every kind of task. And, if you like the idea of space-saving appliances, make sure to check out our guide to the best immersion blenders , which can still tuck into a drawer, but they have a bit more power too.

Best portable blender overall

1. ninja blast.

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

It takes a lot to earn the top spot in our buying guide and the Ninja Blast has recently taken the crown from Cuisinart's Evolution X . Why? It has a bigger capacity, liquid measures on the pitcher, it's lighter, smaller, and better value.

When we first opened this in the test kitchen, our experts were struck by how well-designed the NInja is. It's slim enough to sit in any water bottle holder ( both in backpacks and cup holders), available in a range of attractive colors, and has a useful flip-top lid that doesn't drip or dribble.

We put it through our standard range of tests. We made a smoothie with fibrous green spinach, seedy frozen raspberries, bananas, and tough frozen blueberries. The results were smooth, although we did find the odd lump of frozen strawberry leftover.

Alex, one of our experts, has been using this in his home ever since and says that it's remained consistent and impressive. He regularly adds a scoop of protein powder and creatine to his smoothie mix and the Ninja doesn't struggle to keep the mixture silky rather than lumpy.

What our experts are most excited by is the ice-crushing capacity. Given the shape, size, and power of the Ninja, we didn't initially have high hopes for how well the Ninja could handle ice, but this did a great job both in our tests and back at Alex's home. It crushed ice to a slushy consistency, with just a few seed-sized pieces left swilling around. It's one of the few portable blenders that we'd actually trust to make an ice cone.

Overall, it's easy to use, with a handy system of colored lights around the power button that lets you know when you can use the blender. It's easy to clean – you just add a little dish soap into the blender with water and press start, and it does a pretty good job cleaning up, even if you've left shake residue in there for a couple of hours. It has a blade cap to cover up the blades when the motor housing is uncovered, which is a great safety feature. Alex also liked the screw-on bottom, which means you can take shakes on the go without taking the blades and motor with you. This also passed our commute test.

However, it's definitely not perfect. Like most portable blenders, it struggles to process seeds. It's also not as good as a full-sized blender for making dips; it made a serviceable hummus, but not a great one. It's also fairly tall, so while it's actually a little more compact than the Evolution X, it's definitely better suited to a backpack than a handbag.

There's more information in our Ninja Blast review .

Best portable blender for the gym

2. blendjet 2.

If you'll mostly be using your blender for protein shakes, it's important that it can a) make a good smoothie and b) incorporate powders into said smoothie without it going lumpy. Of all the models that we tested, the BlendJet was easily the best.

Whilst the Ninja did a good job of protein shakes, the BlendJet takes the edge on creating an ultra-smooth texture. It's also smaller, slimmer, and easier to fit into your gym bag and car cup holders. We gave it a test for how well it fares in backpacks during peak commuting time, throwing a full blender around in the bag and it didn't leak a drop. So, all your electricals will be safe beside it.

Our smoothie test is also tougher than the average and the BlendJet sped through it. We gave it fibrous spinach, frozen, seedy berries, ice, and oats, all of which whizzed away to almost nothing. If we're being picky, there was a hint of blueberry skin textures left behind, but it wasn't any more than we would expect from a portable blender. When we added a scoop of BlendJet's protein powder we made the perfect protein shake. There weren't any lumps at all. We also used it to make pancake batter, again a mix that risks getting lumpy, and it excelled. The only thing to note is that this might need a little shake as it blends to make sure that all the drink is reaching the blades.

The fact that there's also a pulse setting means you can use it at home to make dips with thicker ingredients. We tested it with half a can of chickpeas, tahini, a squeeze of lemon, and some cumin. That's some tough stuff for a blender to get through, but this was silky. Our experts used it for pesto, salsa, and guacamole. All turned out well, although we did need to take the bottle off and give the mix a stir, because the thicker ingredients can get stuck under the irremovable blades.

If you need some more power, I'd opt for the BlenderX. It's motor crushes ice much more effectively and consistently, but it's heavier, bigger, and clunkier.

Most powerful portable blender

NutriBullet Pro 900 Series blender ready to test

3. NutriBullet Pro 900 Series Blender

This isn't the classic portable blender: it's bigger than a water bottle, needs to be plugged in, and it's a lot more powerful. We've included it in this guide because Nutribullet sends sip-style lids that screw onto the blending cups, transforming them into a bottle that you can take with you on the go.

I've had the Pro 900 for years and I honestly can't ever see myself switching. It fits neatly into my compact kitchen, is available in a range of colors, and it feels more versatile than any of the other models in this guide. Not only does the sip-style lid make it easy to travel with your smoothie, but the blending cups come with 18 oz, 24 oz, and 32 oz capacities. You can make a small serving for yourself, or a bigger portion that you store in the refrigerator with the help if Nutribullet's screw-on lids.

We put this through our classic smoothie test, which tells us how well the Pro 900 can handle tough spinach, frozen, seedy strawberries, tough blueberries, oats, and almond milk. I've thrown kale, seeds, and nut butter into my smoothies too and it's never let me down. Every smoothie I make is super smooth and expertly blended. It's arguably the best of the bunch, but the reason it's below BlendJet and Ninja is because it's so much bigger and heavier. This is the blender for people who put performance first.

Although simple to operate, the bullet-style blender shape can be a little limited on less watery mixes. For example, this can make good hummus, salsa, nut butter, and guacamole, but it's not always consistent across them all. I don't have to interfere with making salsa and guacamole, but the nut butter and hummus always need me to lift the blending cup, mix the ingredients around, and then set it running again.

When you're done with the Pro 900 everything but the blades themselves can go through the dishwasher, and it's easy enough to clean the blades under running water after your drink is finished. The only thing to note is that this isn't a blender that you can take with you on the go. What's more, it only has a single speed, so if you want to get creative with a recipe you might be a little stuck. We also found that when we tried it on sauces and dips like hummus it left a little to be desired.

Our full NutriBullet Pro 900 Series Blender review has more details.

Best portable blender for dips

4. cuisinart evolutionx cordless blender.

Cuisinart was at the top of the game for portable blenders and the EvolutionX once sat in the top spot for our buying guide for a long time. It's completely cordless, looks really premium, and tackles tough ingredients without breaking a sweat. We gave it weeks of testing, making smoothies, frappés, frozen cocktails, and even hummus and salsas. It's arguably the most versatile of the selection, so if you want an option to replace your standard blender in the kitchen, this is perfect for you.

We quickly learned that, whilst this is thorough, it does require a little more prep than all the other models. We tried blending half a frozen banana in our smoothie test and it just got stuck. You'll need to chop some of your fruits into inch-sized chunks before throwing them in. Once your ingredients are in the blender, it's brilliant – especially for more complex, ingredient-rich recipes like dips. We made pancake batters and protein shakes, both of which can get a little lumpy if not well mixed. The EvolutionX was fantastic, even though it only has a single-speed, each mix was silky smooth. The travel lid is airtight and leak-proof. Even in a handbag, jostled around on the subway, our protein shake didn't leak or spill. I found the lid especially useful for making pancakes. The lid sits back and out of the way, ensuring a steady, even pour into the saucepan. It gets a proper chef's kiss.

What we were most surprised with was how well it crushes ice. This rivals the Ninja Blast (which is in our top spot right now) for its power. In fact, these are in the select few portable that can actually handle big ice cubes. It was unexpected given the preparation that fruits needed for blending, but we won't complain.

The final thing to note is that this won't work when it's charging, so you have to plan out when you'll use it ahead of time, and while the twenty-minute charge was great for occasional use, you might find it a little lacking for everyday use.

Best budget portable blender

5. NutriBullet GO Portable Blender

Not only is it seriously budget-friendly, but the NutriBullet GO Portable is capable of blending most fresh fruits with ease. It was great at taking on berries and soft fruits when we were making smoothies, but as we added in kale, ginger, and seeds it struggled a little. If you're not big on those ingredients and you're more into berries and bananas, you'll be fine. It's a good for first-timers who aren't sure how much they'll use personal blenders, but if you know it'll be a daily staple, I'd recommend opting for the Ninja instead.

Whilst the GO lacks a little power, it's a compromise that Nutribullet makes for a reason. This is as quiet as an electric toothbrush. If you work early shifts or head out to the gym with sunrise, you'll appreciate how silent this is.

It also has plenty of great safety features. The Nutribullet GO won't blend unless it is attached securely to the base, and it needs two presses of the on button to work, which will prevent it from switching on in your backpack or if it gets jostled when the car goes over a pothole. However, one of the safety features might be a little inconvenient: it switches off automatically after a 30-second blend, so if you need to blend for a longer period of time, you have to start a new cycle.

What's more, it can't crush ice. The motor is a tiny 70w, more than 20 times weaker than some of the blenders we've tested. It couldn't even put a dent in an ice cube, so if you want something for frozen drinks, try the next blender on this list. That also means it's not great for thicker meals like hummus or dips like pesto. You should also be aware that it's not dishwasher-safe, so you need to wash it by hand.

Best portable blender for camping

6. blenderx cordless portable blender.

The BlenderX totally outperforms the competition when it comes to power, battery life, and ice-crushing. The BlenderX is clearly designed for holidayers and campers. The model comes with a convenient carry bag that can keep it separate from your clothes when you're packing for breaks away and a screw-on top to keep your blades safe when they're not in use. Couple those features with a 20. oz plastic cup and this is close to perfect. You can make frozen margaritas in the middle of a field, without a power outlet, and they'll be blended perfectly. We've tried it, many times, for research purposes, of course.

It's easy to use too. All you have to do is screw on the plastic cup and start blending. We made smoothies with kale, spinach, frozen strawberries, seedy currants, and tough nuts and there wasn't a fiber left in sight. Even when we added a scoop of protein powder to the mix, it was lump-free and wonderfully drinkable. It made light work of hummus, even though the liquid content is much lower, and could crush ice like no other portable blender. Its performance is powerful and impressive and – even better – it's not actually very noisy. Even on our ice-crushing test, this was one of the more quiet blenders on the market.

However, our main problem is the weight of this blender. While understandable that a blender this powerful needs a bigger motor, it weighs in at 4.62 pounds, so it's not the best choice for commuting. Though the 20z capacity is great, combined with the motor this blender is more than a foot tall, so it isn't something you can slip in your handbag on the way to work. Though the carry bag is great, the wide base means that it's hard to store this blender.

How we test portable blenders

BlendJet 2 review

We're proud of how we test blenders . Our on-staff reviews team tests in both our test kitchen and in their own homes, and not just over the course of a day, but over weeks. Often, we're lucky enough to keep the products, which means we can continually update our buying guides with comments about longevity.

We have a series of tests that we carry out to help us gauge which kind of user each portable blender would suit. We'll keep making these tests harder and harder until the blender can't cope. It's important to know the limits of your model, even if they're extremely high.

Test 1: smoothies For this portable blender guide, we first tried blending smoothies. We tried a mix of frozen and fresh fruits, mixed with spinach or kale, and regular or nut milk. We'd note down how well each ingredient was blended, how quickly it was done, and how loud it was in the process. If the blender has an automatic shutoff we made a note of how many tries it took to get the smoothie to the perfect consistency.

Test 2: dips We also tried making hummus pesto in our portable blenders, which allowed us to see how they handled less wet ingredients. Here, we looked around the blades, checking whether any residual ingredients were left behind, resulting in a more 'chunky' dip. This test also helped us see if any odors would remain inside the blending cup after use.

Test 3: crushed ice Finally, we made crushed ice to see if the blenders could handle a few ice cubes. This is a big challenge for a portable blender since it's not shaped very well for blending ice cubes. You generally need a lot of space and a wider blending pitcher if you want properly crushed ice but some surprised us with how well they did. This can be a noisy, long task, so we made sure to note how long each model took to crush ice (if it could) and how loud it was).

After these tests, we'll group together to think about the value , how the model compares to other similar blenders in the market, and we'll consider who it suits . Here, we'll let you know how noisy it is overall, how well-built it is, whether it's well-designed for small bags, whether it leaks, how easy it is to use , and how straightforward the clean-up is too. Then, we put all the information together to let you know exactly what we thought.

We tested both corded and cordless personal blenders because while a cordless blender is rarely as powerful as a corded one, the very best can manage what most of us want from them: well-blended smoothies we can make on-the-go.

Our review and testing guidelines provide more insight into our processes, and our testers for this guide are listed below.

How to choose a portable blender

Portable blenders (also known as travel or personal blenders) are typically designed to make smoothies directly into travel mugs. They’re built for quick, grab-and-go operation, and are designed to be easier and quicker to use than their full-sized models.

There are lots of different models and no right choice, as it depends on how you want to use the blender. If you travel a lot and want a blender that you can throw in your luggage, then size is all-important . Look for a smaller, lighter blender, even if you have to compromise on a smaller travel mug as a result.

If you’re going camping a lot and won’t have power, then look for a battery-powered model that you can charge and use when you’re out.

Smaller blenders tend to have lower-powered motors, so will work well with soft fruits and for making most smoothies, but you’ll find they struggle with (or can’t handle) ice or frozen ingredients.

If you mostly make smoothies at home, then you can get a model with a bigger base and a larger motor . With a bigger motor, you’ll be able to make a wider variety of drinks.

For home use, you may find it useful to get a blender with different accessories , such as a chopping bowl for preparing ingredients for cooking, or a grinder for dealing with spices.

How much does a portable blender cost?

As they’re smaller and aren’t as powerful as full-size blenders, prices are much lower. An entry-level blender should cost under $50, and give you basic smoothie making with softer fruits.

At the high-end, you can spend up to $150 on a model with more accessories and more powerful motors to give you more flexibility.

Is a portable blender as good as a full-size blender?

A portable blender is different from a full-size one. Most portable models are designed to be quick and easy to use, with one-button operation and single-speed motors. They’re typically as good as large models for smoothies.

Travel blenders are generally quite limited, though: you can make smaller quantities, they’re not built to run for as long, and they don’t have the controls of a full-size model.

You usually can’t use hot liquids in personal blenders, either, as the travel cups are made from plastic that could be damaged by the heat.

If you want to vary what you can make, and have more control over the process, a full-size blender makes sense and, as our guide showed, you can always add a travel cup to your model to give you that blend-and-go convenience.

Of course, while these portable blenders are great, they simply can't match bigger blenders for power, speed, or capacity, so it's worth considering a traditional style. What's more, blenders can only handle liquids. For dry chopping, you should research the best food processors .

The 11 best portable blenders of 2024, according to experts

Portable blenders come in both corded and cordless varieties, each with their own benefits. Experts say to keep things like wattage and size in mind when shopping for them.

With a compact portable blender, making smoothies, protein drinks and/or the occasional frozen margarita on the go, has never been easier. Portable blenders, which are small lightweight appliances you can carry with you or tuck away in a drawer in a dorm or office, let you whip up drinks no matter where you are or how much counter space you have. They’re great for post-gym smoothies or an afternoon snack from the beach. And unlike a standard blender , the vessel that it blends your ingredients in is usually the same one you’ll end up drinking from, so you can quickly grab and go.

To learn more about portable blenders and what key factors to look for when shopping, we spoke with fitness and nutrition experts, a dietitian and a cookbook author. Based on their tips and advice, we rounded up the best portable blenders on the market.

SKIP AHEAD How we picked the best portable blenders | The best portable blenders in 2024 | How to shop for portable blenders | How to safely use a portable blender | How to clean a portable blender

Selected. Our top picks

How we picked the best portable blenders

The right portable blender for you depends on where and how you plan to use it.  We spoke with cookbook authors, registered dieticians and certified personal trainers about what to look for when shopping. Here’s what they recommend keeping in mind:

  • Corded vs cordless : Portable blenders are available in both corded and cordless options. Corded portable blenders require an electrical outlet, which is fine if you plan to use it in your home or at an office. For blending smoothies away from home or an electric outlet (for example, at the beach or gym ), opt for a cordless model that charges via a USB port.
  • Blender cup: With portable blenders, you can blend in and drink from the same vessel, which makes it easy to take your smoothie on the go . In some models, you drink right from the tumbler with the blade still safely secured at the bottom. In other models, you replace the bladed lid with a drinking lid, which makes for a more pleasant drinking experience, but creates one extra accessory you’ll have to account for while traveling.
  • Power: A blender’s power is expressed through wattage. To make protein drinks or basic smoothies without leafy greens, you don’t need a model with more than 500 watts. However, if you want to puree ice, nuts and other harder-to-blend items, you’ll want an appliance with a powerful motor.

The best portable blenders to shop in 2024.

Below, we compiled the best portable blenders based on our experts’ guidance and recommendations, and our own experience. We also included picks that are highly rated with at least four stars from over 500 reviews as well as direct recommendations from  NBC Select staff members.

Corded portable blenders

Corded portable blenders require access to electric outlets so they’re great to use in kitchens, dorms or offices.

Beast Mini Blender Plus

Beast Mini Blender Plus

The Beast Mini Blender Plus comes recommended by NBC Select associate updates editor Zoe Malin , who says its design is equally as impressive  as its effectiveness. “It’s like art on your countertop,” she says. “Plus, the straw in the spout makes it easier to drink from than traditional versions. It’s strong, beautiful and functional,” says Malin. The blender comes with a blade attachment, 530-ml and 413-ml blending vessels, storage lids, a drinking lid and carry cap to attach to bags.

Capacity: 500mL | Dimensions: 4.13  x 4.13  x 13.43 in. | Weight: 4.81 lbs. | P ower: 600W | Settings: 2 speeds (pulse + blend)

Nutribullet Ultra

Nutribullet Ultra Blender

Nutribullet Ultra Blender

The Nutribullet Ultra is one of several portable blenders from Nutribullet. This model also comes recommended by Malin, who loves how powerful the motor in the base is. “I can put ice in and a bunch of frozen fruit in it — I press it once and it’s perfectly smooth,” she says. “I also like that it comes with multiple cups, one with a handle and one without.” The Ultra has a stainless steel blade attachment, 24- and 32-ounce cups and convenient travel lids that snap open and close. The blender, which is available in the shades gunmetal and silver, is also the Nutribullet’s quietest single-serve blender, according to the brand.

Capacity: 24 oz, 32 oz | Dimensions: 5 x 4.75  x 14 in. | Weight : 10.14 lbs. | Power: 1,200W | Settings: 2 speeds (smoothie + pulse)

Our Place Splendor Blender

Our Place Splendor Blender

Our Place, the brand behind the Always Pan and the oven-safe Always Pan 2.0 recently added this portable blender to its cookware lineup. The appliance, which comes in the brand’s signature muted shades, has a simple design with top-shelf dishwasher safe parts. “What I love is that you can buy a separate blender cup with a handle for things like soup and frozen drinks,” says Malin. “You can also buy a baby version of it , which is great for dips.” The blender comes with a drinking lid and a sharp blade attachment that can blend drinks in 45 seconds or less, according to the brand.

Capacity: 750mL | Dimensions: 5.5 x 6.1 x 15.6 in. | Weight: 5.5 lbs | Power: 1,000W |  Settings: 2 speeds (high-speed blend + pulse

Nutribullet Pro 900

Nutribullet Pro 900

This powerful but portable blender is a favorite of Mecayla Froerer, a master trainer for iFIT and NordicTrack . At least four to five times a week she uses it to blend frozen fibrous fruits and vegetables with protein powder. Michael Silverstein , personal chef and author of “ New Keto: Dinner in 30 ” and “ New Comfort Cooking ,” also uses it weekly to prepare sauces like pesto and chimichurri, salad dressings and baby food. Silverstein uses it to grind peanuts into a smooth butter.

Both Silverstein and Froerer like its small overall size and portability. While it’s similar in design to the Original Magic Bullet (also made by Nutribullet), it’s more powerful and can easily handle leafy greens, nuts and seeds, according to Froerer.

The Nutribullet Pro 900 comes with dishwasher-safe cups and lids, plus you can choose from 12 colors.

Capacity: 32 ounces (2 cups included) | Dimensions: 12 x 7.7 x 16 in. | Weight: 4.7 lbs | Power: 900W | Settings: 1 speed (twist + blend)

Ninja Fit Compact Personal Blender

Ninja Fit Compact Personal Blender

Melanie Marcus , RD, a culinary nutrition expert, and nutrition and health communications manager for Dole Food Company keeps one Ninja Fit in her home kitchen and another at the office so she always has one available to blend a quick drinkable meal. Even when using kale and ice cubes, she says her drinks come out perfectly smooth. The two-cup tumbler helps her control portion size and the max-fill line keeps her from overpacking the appliance, so ingredients can swirl in the jar during blending, says Marcus. It only has one speed, which she says makes it intuitive to operate.

Capacity: 16 ounces (2 cups included) | Dimensions: 4 x 4 x 13 in. | Weight: 3 lbs | Power: 700W | Settings: 1 speed (blend

The Original Magic Bullet

The Original Magic Bullet

I have used this compact blender, which comes with a base and two dishwasher-safe cups, for 20 years. In my experience, it’s a great size for a single serving and I find it very effective at giving smooth results. To blend, you add ingredients to one of the included plastic cups and twist on the bladed lid. Then, you’ll turn the cup upside down and place it on the base. From there, you press down on the top and the blender starts running. You can also use a lock-on mode for a hands-off operation.

Capacity: 20 ounces, tall cup; 12 ounces, short cup | Dimensions: 4 x 4.5 x 11.6 in. | Weight: 3.4 lbs | Power: 700W | Settings: 1 speed (blend)

Hamilton Beach Personal Creations

Hamilton Beach Personal Creations

This highly rated blender, which has an average of 4.2 stars from 45,135 Amazon reviews, is a great choice for those looking for a model to travel with. In my experience using an earlier version of this model, it’s easy to operate, but does require two hands: one to push a button and the other to hold down the lid. After your drink is ready, you can remove the jar from the base and drink from the blending vessel with the blade still secured to the bottom. The cup and lid are not dishwasher-safe however, so you’ll need to hand wash them, according to the brand. The base comes in six colors including black, blue, raspberry and red.

Capacity: 14 ounces | Dimensions: 3.5 x 3.5 x 12.3 in. | Weight: 2 lbs | Power: 175W Settings: 1 speed (blend)

Ninja Nutri Pro Compact Personal Blender

Ninja Nutri Pro Compact Personal Blender

Highly rated, with a 4.8-star average rating from 5,294 Amazon reviews, this blender is a great option for those looking for power and flexibility. In addition to manual and pulse options, it has two preprogrammed settings — one for smoothies and one called crush for frozen drinks that are made with ice. Its pulse feature also doubles as a mini chopper for making guacamole or salsa, or chopping nuts. At 6 pounds, this blender is heavier than other options on our list so it’s a better choice to take with you to a cabin or beach house as compared to a daily commute to and from work. All of the parts except the base are dishwasher-safe.

Capacity: 24 ounces (2 cups provided) | Dimensions: 6.3 x7 x 14.29 in. | Weight: 6.3 lbs | Power:  1,100W | Settings: 2 speeds (pulse + blend)

Cordless portable blenders

Cordless portable blenders, like their name implies, are wire-free. They don’t require nearby outlets and instead charge via a USB cable.

Cuisinart EvolutionX Cordless Compact Blender

Cuisinart Evolution X Cordless Compact Blender

Cuisinart Evolution X Cordless Compact Blender

Jay Patruno , MS, RDN, CPT, a registered dietitian for  NourishRX , has used this blender every day for the past six months at his home, the gym or in a hotel room as part of his workout regimen. He says it’s powerful enough to pulverize frozen fruit, nuts and seeds for protein drinks.

I also have experience using this model for the past year. When I use it to make smoothies or frozen cocktails with full-size ice cubes, my drinks come out with an even texture, free of any bits of fruit or ice. Unlike other cordless blenders, when you press the power button, it keeps running so you’ll need to keep an eye on the blending process and stop it when your drink looks thoroughly mixed. At 4.8 pounds, it’s a great option to bring with you on road trips or backyard snacking sessions. All of the pieces except the base are top rack dishwasher-safe.

Capacity: 16 ounces | Dimensions: 4 x 3.5 x 11.7 in. | Weight: 4.8 lbs | Settings: 1 speed (blend)

BlendJet 2

If your primary consideration is portability, consider the BlendJet 2. Both Froerer and Patruno depend on this blender to make daily fitness drinks at their offices or while traveling.

When I don’t want to pull out a full-size model, I use this model (which you’ll need to hand-wash) to make fruit smoothies. I like that it’s powerful enough to create the vortex needed to whirl and crush juice, yogurt, frozen fruit and full-size ice cubes into thick, even-textured smoothies. When you press the start button, it automatically runs for 20 seconds. To add more time, you run another cycle, plus you can also pulse your mixture. When you press the start button, it automatically runs for 20 seconds. To add more time, you run another cycle, plus you can also pulse your mixture.

The jar has measurement markings, but I found them difficult to read since they don’t contrast with the jar. When your smoothie is blended, you can remove the lid and sip immediately from the blender. To prevent the blade from accidentally spinning while you’re drinking, you can lock it into place by holding down the power button for 3 seconds. It’s available in 26 colors and patterns.

Capacity: 20 ounces  | Dimensions: 3 x 3 x 9 in. | Weight: 1.3 lbs  | Settings: 1 speed (blend)

PopBabies Portable Blender

PopBabies Portable Blender

PopBabies Portable Blender

I created thick, frosty smoothies and pina coladas with this small, rechargeable model. It comes with a mini ice cube tray, which you’ll need to use in place of full-size cubes, according to the brand.  After blending, you’ll remove the cup from the base, but the blade will remain in the bottom of the jar as you drink. In my experience, the narrow jar mouth is pleasant to drink from, but difficult to fill since fruit has to be cut into very small pieces and adding ingredients like yogurt or powders can be messy. (It does come with a funnel to help add ingredients.) Plus, the cup has easy-to-read measurement markings. All of the pieces, except for the base, are dishwasher safe.

Capacity: 15 ounces | Dimensions: 3.2 x 3.2 x 6.1 in. | Weight: 1.3 lbs | Settings: 1 speed (blend)

How to shop for portable blenders

Before purchasing a portable blender, consider the following:

Corded versus cordless

Portable blenders come in two versions. Corded models are great to take to offices or gyms since you’ll need to plug them into an electrical outlet, while cordless blenders are better for taking to picnics, beaches or while camping since they charge with a USB cable. A cordless blender will stay charged anywhere from about five to 20 minutes, based on my experience using them. Both models make drinks in a single-serve cup and are easy to carry with you or stow away in a cabinet or closet.

Type of lid

On some models, you’ll remove the lid to drink your beverage, but the sipping experience is not always optimal since the blade sits at the bottom of the jar. With others, you’ll replace your blending lid that has a blade, with a sipping lid, which turns the jar into a travel tumbler.

While portable blenders with around 900 watts will perform better than ones with around 200 watts, other factors including the blade, the shape and size of the cup and the way they interact with each other are more important factors than the motor in determining how well a model works, according to experts.  When you are comparing a blenders’ power within a few hundred watts of each other, don’t be swayed by a higher number if another model better suits your needs when it comes to price, size, reviews or features, for example.

How to safely use a portable blender efficiently

  • Since portable benders have small capacities, you’ll likely need to scale down recipes designed for full-size blenders.
  • The order you add ingredients to the jar is critical, according to Patruno. Unlike in full-size blenders, where you add liquids followed by solids, in some portable blenders, you’ll need to put the solids in first. That’s because in portable blenders you flip your blending jars upside down before placing them on the base so your liquids will be closest to the blades. (This is to prevent solid fruits or other ingredients from freezing to your blades.) Check your appliance manual to find out what’s best for your specific model.
  • Avoid overfilling the blender to give the ingredients plenty of room to circulate, says Marcus. Pay attention to the max fill line if your blender has one. Ingredients will expand after they’re blended because the blender incorporates air into it.
  • Cut fruits and vegetables into small pieces before blending to prevent them from getting stuck under the blade.
  • When you use your portable blender on the road or at a picnic, for example, make sure that any perishable ingredients like yogurt or fruit are chilled during transit. If you want to incorporate ice or frozen fruit, you need a well-insulated cooler.
  • Before you begin blending, turn the jar upside down and give it a good shake to dislodge any chunks from under the blade. In between pulses, use a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides and make sure everything is evenly incorporated.
  • Don’t blend hot ingredients in a portable blender because pressure will build up and you could damage the blender.

How to clean your portable blender

  • Check your manual to see which parts of your blender are dishwasher-safe (if any.) All but one of the experts we interviewed put their blender cups and lids in the dishwasher and say they’ve been able to use them for years without any parts degrading or changing their blenders’ functionality. However, be mindful that the heat from a dishwasher may damage the plastic on your blender cup.
  • Before washing it by hand or in the dishwasher, fill the blender halfway up with water and a squirt of dishwashing liquid. Then rinse it for a few seconds under running water to get rid of any sticky residue that’s hard to get rid of.

Best Portable Blenders

Personal blenders are designed to let you blend a single-serve smoothie and then take it on the go. However, if you like to camp, spend a lot of time outdoors, or do a lot of driving, you might want a blender that lets you blend up a smoothie or shake, even if you don't have access to an outlet. That's where portable blenders come in. These battery-powered blenders are generally around the same size as a water bottle, and the whole blender is usually designed for you to carry around, motor base, blades, and all. While the best models can make a pretty good smoothie even if you add difficult ingredients like ice cubes and kale, they aren't very powerful and can't match the performance of conventional blenders.

We've tested more than 110 blenders, and below are our recommendations for the best portable blenders for most people. If blending performance is more important to you than portability, you'll probably want to check out our recommendations for the best personal blenders and best bullet blenders . If you're looking for a battery-powered immersion blender, check out our list of the best immersion blenders .

Best Portable Blender

NutriBullet Flip Design Picture

The NutriBullet Flip is the best portable blender we've tested. It's more expensive than a lot of portable blenders, but it has some advantages. First of all, it comes with a couple of lid options — you can either flip it over right after blending and drink directly from a spout on the motor base. Or, you can remove the motor base and replace it with a to-go lid that can be used with the included straw. It makes a very smooth blend with fibrous ingredients like fruit and kale, which is uncommon for portable blenders, and means you can use it for a variety of smoothie and protein shake recipes and get results comparable to a good plug-in blender.

Unlike most blenders, you can buy it with a stainless steel or plastic jar. The stainless steel jar is insulated, which helps keep your drink colder longer. The manufacturer advertises an overall battery life of about seven minutes, which is in line with other portable blenders. Like most other battery-powered models, it has restrictions on how long you can run it. You have to let the motor cool down after running it for one minute, which makes it hard to use for recipes like nut butter, although it's not intended for that purpose. It's also more difficult to clean than a regular blender because the blades can't be removed from the base, which can't be immersed in water; this is also the case for most of the other blenders recommended here.

Best Mid-Range Portable Blender

Ninja Blast Design Picture

The Ninja Blast is a good option if you want something cheaper. This battery-powered blender is around the same size as a water bottle, so you can easily carry it around on a walk or to the gym. Its jar has a somewhat smaller 18oz capacity, and its design doesn't give you the option of removing the motor base after blending, but it's still quite light and has a good build quality. It's not as good at blending fibrous ingredients as the NutriBullet Flip , so recipes with kale or fruit will have more unprocessed bits left over. Still, it makes a decently smooth blend, so it'll make a drinkable smoothie with a variety of recipes. It also comes in more different colors than the other blenders recommended here.

It doesn't come with a straw, but its lid's spout opens with a button, which makes it easy to open and drink from with one hand when you're on the go. The manufacturer says the battery lasts for about 7.5 minutes of continuous blending (or about 15 blending cycles of 30 seconds each), about the same as the NutriBullet Flip. The 18oz jar and drinking lid are dishwasher-safe, but the blades must be cleaned by hand because you can't remove them from the motor base, like the previous pick.

Best Budget Portable Blender

Magic Bullet Portable Blender Design Picture

If you want a cheap portable blender for occasional use, go for the Magic Bullet Portable Blender . This blender has a smaller capacity than the Ninja Blast — its 18oz jar has a maximum fill line at 12oz. It's not as quiet when it's running and doesn't come in as many different colors, although you can still get it in white, black, pink, or silver. It's equally well-built and has a similar lid design with a button that opens the spout for easy on-the-go drinking.

It also makes a decently smooth blend with difficult ingredients like leafy greens. You may need to use a spatula to scrape the jar partway through blending, which makes it less convenient to use compared with the previous picks. Its advertised battery life of about five minutes is the shortest on the list. It's also not quite as quiet as the Ninja but still doesn't make much noise for a blender, so using it to blend a smoothie for lunch at the office or make a post-workout shake at the gym won't be that disruptive.

Best Portable Blender For Camping

Cuisinart EvolutionX Cordless Rechargeable Personal Blender Design Picture

If you're looking for a battery-powered blender for your next RV or camping trip, try the Cuisinart EvolutionX Cordless Rechargeable Personal Blender. This model is bigger and less portable than previous picks but also more powerful, making it a good choice for camping, road trips, and other situations where you don't have constant access to an outlet. This blender's blade assembly, motor base, and jar are all separate pieces, so you'll have to store or carry the motor base in a bag when using the jar as a travel cup. That makes cleaning a bit easier since you can clean the blades without worrying about damaging the motor base with water.

The manufacturer advertises a 20-minute battery life, the longest on the list. It makes a reasonably smooth blend of fruits and vegetables. It leaves a few more grains behind than the  Ninja Blast but processes ingredients faster. It's also the most versatile battery-powered blender on this list: it's the only one to make smooth, spreadable nut butter with a 'full batch' of two cups. Of course, battery-powered blenders aren't ideal for difficult blends since they take a lot of time and deplete the battery faster. However, this one is a good option if you need a blender for your camper or cabin and want more power and versatility.

  • BlendJet 2: The BlendJet 2 is less expensive than the Ninja Blast. It makes fairly well-blended smoothies, is easy to clean, and comes in a wide selection of available colors and patterns. However, the manufacturer has recently recalled many units for safety reasons. It's still available for purchase, and new units aren't subject to the recall. That said, they may perform differently because of the design changes. We'll be retesting the updated version once we receive it. See our review

These recommendations are what we think are currently the best battery-powered blenders for most people. We factor in the price (a cheaper blender wins over a pricier one if the difference isn't worth it), feedback from our visitors, and availability (no blenders that are difficult to find or almost out of stock everywhere).

If you want to choose for yourself, here is the list of all our personal blender reviews (including both battery-powered and portable models). Be careful not to get too caught up in the details. While no blender is perfect, most blenders are great enough to please almost everyone, and the differences are often not noticeable unless you look for them.

Portable blender FAQs

The 4 best portable blenders in 2023, tried and tested.

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

Maybe you crave only the occasional smoothie, or don't have consistent access to 110-volt outlets or shore power, such as people spending time in RVs or on boats. Portable blenders could be the answer, taking up even less space than personal blenders and powering through basic blending tasks.

We won't mince our words: Portable blenders, or cordless blenders, are far from wire-bound, full-sized blenders . They might not mince almonds into flour and generally hack their way through a smoothie, but they hardly take up any space and aren't to be scoffed at when it comes time to for a shake, smoothie, or pina colada on the road, at a remote campsite, or in the middle of the ocean. We didn't test our recommendations

anywhere so far-flung, but we did run them through a battery of tests to find the best for each set of needs and budget.

Our top picks for portable blenders in 2023

Best overall: BlendJet 2 – See at Best Buy The BlendJet 2 offers everything you want in a portable blender: it's compact, relatively lightweight, easy to clean, and churns out smoothies with ease.

Best budget: Oster Blend Active – See at Amazon Oster's Blend Active makes smoothies and shakes without trouble, and for those looking for the most compact option, it's the smallest model we tested.

Best for smoothies: Hamilton Beach Blend Now – See at Amazon Designed with protein shakes in mind and featuring a matching lid, this is a surprisingly capable little blender for the size, weight, and price.

Best bottle blender: BlenderBottle Strada – See at Amazon BlenderBottle's Strada insulated stainless steel model keeps drinks secure and chilled on the go with surgical-grade stainless steel and a locking lid.

Best overall: BlendJet 2

usb travel blender

Pros: Easy to use, self-cleaning, powerful for a cordless blender, submersible

Cons: Won't do much more than blend, battery won't last forever, only 30-day warranty

While it's not going to quickly or consistently pulverize ice or make flawless nut butter, the BlendJet 2 reliably does what most of us call upon a blender to do: make flawless shakes, smoothies, and cocktails.

The slightly offset, four-tipped blade plus a pulse mode allows the BlendJet to process foods better than your average portable blender. We even managed a passable almond butter with it, as well as remarkably fast smoothies (about 30-40 seconds) and shaved ice. The regular mode is better suited for smoothies, shakes, and cocktails — you can also clean it in this mode by blending a drop of dish soap and some warm water.

The BlendJet 2 fully charges in about an hour and a half, which offers around 5 to 10 minutes of blending, or as the brand claims, more than 15 blends. We found that to be about right, though jobs that require more power naturally drained the battery faster. That said, you probably won't be grinding piles of ice cubes or trying to make gravel (please don't try to make gravel in any blender).

We like how easy the BlendJet 2 is to pack and carry and how relatively lightweight it is, especially compared with other, slightly more budget-friendly options. A low-profile, no-frills carry loop plus a locking lid and base make storing it in your bag about as worry-free as can be.

Best budget: Oster Blend Active

usb travel blender

Pros: Extremely compact, low profile, self-cleaning, great 3-year warranty

Cons: A little heavy for the size, not great battery life

For making shakes, smoothies, and cocktails on the go, the Oster Blend Active checks all the boxes at an almost impossibly affordable price.

It doesn't hold the same battery life that the BlendJet 2 does, but for those of us who aren't going 10 blends between finding our way to a charger, that's a non-issue. The brand claims it handles 10 blends between charges, but we found it lasted between five and seven blends before requiring charging.

A two-and-a-half-hour charging time is the biggest downside of this blender, but for about $20, it's worth putting up with.

The base of the blender functions can act as a lid, but we prefered the flip-top. It snaps shut nicely and has a carrying loop, which seems like a fortified, heavy-duty rubber band, that makes holding it much more manageable than with the base functioning as the lid. With the base on top, you do have the option to give your beverage a quick stir or add an ice cube to refresh it.

The slimline, two-tipped blade isn't going to do a great job making almond flour, but if you want a small, budget-friendly blender for basic drinks on the go, Oster's Blend Active is the ticket.

Best for smoothies: Hamilton Beach Blend Now

usb travel blender

Pros: Lightweight, shatter-resistant jar, blade guard for safety, makes almond flour

Cons: Lid is a little large, won't crush ice or frozen strawberries

Hamilton Beach's Blend Now is another portable blender that is great for smoothies and cocktails, but is designed with smoothies and protein shakes in mind. It doesn't do anything fancy (in spite of its six blades), but it comes with a sturdy lid and built-in plastic handle that will easily clip to your gym back or rest inside without spilling.

We had both perfect smoothies and passable almond flour in under 40 seconds with this blender. As with other budget options, we did have trouble grinding ice and frozen strawberries.

The brand claims you'll get 28 protein shakes out of each charge, which is feasible, but in our testing we were getting about 5 smoothies before the power started to weaken. It took somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half to recharge, which is slightly better than average, but it holds less total charge. All in all, the battery capacity is in line with most portable blenders on the market.

The flip-top lid with the built-in handle is a bit cumbersome, but it's the status-quo design for protein shake bottles. It will suit those looking to bring it to the gym right along with any other blender bottle.

Best bottle blender: BottleBlender Strada

usb travel blender

Pros: Easy-open push-button cap, locking lid, double-walled, insulated stainless-steel cup keeps contents cold

Cons: Cup isn't dishwasher-safe, can't handle hot liquids

If you don't need power and just want to shake up your protein drink on your way to, fro, or at the gym, BlenderBottle's Strada is our favorite manual blender bottle because it's built to last with surgical-grade stainless steel and comes with a lid that is as sturdy as they come.

The interior has markings to help you portion out drinks up to 20 ounces (that's where the max-fill line is, despite the advertised 24-ounce capacity). The standard-issue stainless-steel Blender Ball whisk easily does its job to eliminate powder clumps, making for impressively smooth manual shakes.

This is the simple, fuss-free option that won't fail you the way electronics ultimately will, and it's designed to withstand most of the trouble it is liable to meet with at the gym. It goes without saying that you're not going to produce smoothies with this device, but it does an extraordinary job with powder-based shakes and infusions, functions nicely as a water bottle, and a built-in carrying loop attaches to your gym bag with authority. A lifetime limited warranty — something you won't get with most electronics — inspires even further confidence.

Size/capacity: Portable blenders fall under the personal blender category as they don't carry the power of larger blenders. They range in size from about single-serve to about a two-cup capacity, which is just about right for one to three people to enjoy.

Power: You can only expect about 50 watts or the equivalent from a personal blender. Depending on the size of the battery, we find that you'll get anywhere from about 5 to 15 blends per charge (more or less depending on the hardness of what you're blending or chopping).

Ease of use/cleaning: All of the blenders we tested were easy enough to disassemble and clean, but those with better self-cleaning features and less gaskets to remove are ideal. Portable blenders are all about convenience.

How we tested portable blenders

usb travel blender

We tested portable blenders side by side with personal blenders. Unsurprisingly, we found that lithium-ion-battery-powered portable blenders lacked the power that small, 110v personal blenders possess.

We spoke with Erika Wong, a registered dietitian, nutritionist, and PureFish's in-house blending specialist, who also worked as a counselor at Massachusetts General Hospital to find out what makes a top-notch blender and general, and then pared down those criteria to accommodate smaller, less-powerful, and more portable options, looking to speed, power, and simplicity in use and cleaning.

Our testing process for personal blenders was as follows:

Ice: We blended three ounces of ice in each blender, timing it and noting any necessary pulsing, prodding, or shaking required to get shavings as uniform as possible. Some blenders simply didn't cut it.

Frozen strawberries: We put three ounces of frozen strawberries into each portable blender, finding that some had an easier time than others. The BlendJet 2 was the only one that offered a nearly uniform result.

Almond flour: Although it was a longshot, we put two ounces of toasted almonds into each blender, timing the process and noting when flour either didn't materialize or things clumped up badly. Most portable blenders were unable to make flour, but some, like our top pick, did.

Strawberry-banana smoothies: We made strawberry-banana smoothies with frozen strawberries and fresh bananas because of the difference in texture. Aside from the time it took to be totally blended, we encountered hardly any issues with all of the blenders we tested.

Can a portable blender still crush ice?

Some portable blenders can crush ice well enough, but nothing like a 350- or 700-watt blender can. The best portable blender we tested for crushing ice was our overall pick, the BlendJet 2.

What's the point of a portable blender?

Portable blenders are designed for blending on the go, whether you're staying in an RV, on a boat, or camping in the middle of nowhere. They're usually much more compact than standard blenders, and nowhere near as powerful, but they can handle your basic smoothie, cocktail, and shake.

Updated April 29, 2024

A portable blender lets you whip up a smoothie or a protein shake at the gym, office, picnic site, or anywhere else. These cordless wonders can cost as little as the price of a pizza or as much as a countertop blender. We tested top models at a range of prices to learn whether more money buys you a smoother drink.

The Cuisinart Evolution X blender sits on a white surface against a pink background.

The Cuisinart Evolution X is a lot like a regular blender, but you can take it on the go.

  • Dimensions: 3.5”D x 3.9”W x 11.69”H
  • Weight: 2.21 pounds
  • Capacity: 16 ounces
  • Dishwasher safe parts: Yes, top rack only

The Cuisinart Evolution X Cordless Compact Blender is more substantial and a bit pricier than others we tested. Its sleek packaging reflects the powerful model inside. It quickly and easily blends everything from our basic test smoothie to a piña colada. There were no stray bits of fruit, or even of the full-sized ice in our cocktail.

Unlike others we tested, the Evolution X doesn’t have a timed cycle. When you turn it on, it keeps running until you stop it. You’ll need to keep watch and stop the blender when it looks like everything is blended. If you’re making pesto or chopping walnuts, you can pulse the blender by pressing the button on and off.

After you finish blending, you remove the blender cup from the bladed base and add a non-spill travel lid. That way, you can enjoy your drink on the go without feeling like you’re drinking out of a blender jar.

The Evolution X can blend for 22 minutes without losing power and takes about a minute to whiz a single drink. That means you can make a whole lot of smoothies or daiquiris on a single charge. With its larger size, this model may be better suited for large gatherings than after a spin class or on a hike.

All of the pieces except the base can go in the top rack of the dishwasher. A charger comes with the blender. There’s also a very thorough manual with clear instructions and a selection of enticing recipes.

This cordless blender has a lightweight design, is very easy to use, and makes fully blended smoothies.

  • Dimensions: 3.54"D x 3.54"W x 10.71"H
  • Weight: 1.74 pounds
  • Capacity: 18 ounces
  • Dishwasher safe parts: Yes

The Ninja Blast proves true to its name and blasts through smoothie ingredients to produce silky-smooth results. In our testing, we marvel at how it handles frozen fruit and ice. It handles up to 18 ounces at once.

We find this blender particularly easy to use. The light ring around the Start/Stop button changes color to indicate the state of the blender.

For instance, green means the device is at full power., Purple means ready to blend. A single button press of the button activates a 30-second blend cycle.

One thing that truly sets the Ninja Blast apart from the competition is its separate power and blend buttons. You must keep the vessel attached to the base while drinking. You can ensure the blender is off so there's far less chance of accidentally starting a blend cycle.

The lid to the Ninja Blast has a spout for sipping and a cover that securely latches to prevent spills. We also like the carry handle. This makes it easy to carry the blender or use a carabiner to attach it to the strap of a gym bag.

While other blender jars simply twist-click into place, the jar of the Ninja Blast truly screws into the base. This adds peace of mind that the seal is secure.

This isn't the lightest portable blender on our list. However, it feels particularly balanced. while drinking, it doesn't necessarily feel like you've got a blender under your cup.

The Ninja Blast comes in six different colors, and the sipping lid matches the color of the base. A USB-C charging cable is comes with the blender. However, it doesn't come with a wall plug. You'll need a separate USB plug block, or you can plug it into a USB outlet in your car or computer.

Other Portable Blenders We Test

Product image of BlendJet 2

  • Dimensions: 3”D x 3”W x 9”H
  • Weight: 1.34 pounds
  • Capacity: 16 ounces (other sizes available separately)
  • Dishwasher safe parts: No

For a small, inexpensive appliance, the BlendJet 2 has a surprisingly elegant design. Its 26 different colors and patterns range from basic black to psychedelic tie-dye.

The powerful motor deftly handled whole nuts and full-size ice cubes. We rarely find that almonds or pieces of banana stick beneath the blade. It’s powerful enough to create a vortex and mix things thoroughly.

Pressing the BlendJet 2’s button runs it for a 20-second cycle. To continue blending, you turn it on for another cycle. You can also pulse ingredients by quickly pressing the button twice. This is handy when making salsa or chopping herbs that you don’t want to purée.

In our lab tests, the BlendJet held its charge for 6 minutes. That’s enough battery life to prepare drinks for a small gathering. It’s significantly less than other models in this list.

The jar has measurement markings in both ounces and milliliters. Unfortunately, they don’t contrast with the jar, so they can be difficult to read. When your smoothie is done, simply remove the lid and sip right from the blender.

You can (and should!) lock the blade to prevent it from accidentally spinning while you’re drinking. A strap handle on the lid makes it easy to carry around.

Product image of BlenderX Cordless Portable Blender

  • Dimensions: 5.75"D x 5.75"W x 13"H
  • Weight: 4.63 pounds
  • Capacity: 20.6 ounces
  • Dishwasher safe parts: Lids only

BlenderX is the Cadillac of portable blenders. It’s by far the most expensive, as well as the largest and heaviest. It has the biggest capacity, easily making slushies or frozen mojitos to share. While it’s powerful enough to crush ice and blend nuts, on some tests we found a few small pieces left unprocessed.

We found it tricky to assemble the blade into the jar and the jar onto the base. The jar must be in an exact position before turning. It takes multiple tries to get it right. This was also the noisiest model we tested, according to lab results.

To operate the Blender X, you hold the button for as long as you want to keep blending. While mixing a drink takes less than a minute, holding the switch that entire time can be tedious. It is good for pulse control when you’re making something like pesto that shouldn’t have a totally smooth texture.

After blending, you replace the bladed lid with a drinking lid for a pleasant sipping experience. A dome lid covers the blade when the unit isn’t running. This protects you from accidental nicks. Only the travel and blade lids can be go in the dishwasher, which is minimally convenient.

The Blender X comes with a substantial vinyl carrying case and a charger. Unfortunately, that charger requires an electrical outlet, with no USB option. That can limit its usefulness on the road.

Product image of Otpeir Fresh Juice Personal Size Blender

  • Dimensions: 3.23”D x 3.23”W x 8.59”H
  • Weight: 1.41 pounds
  • Capacity: 13.187 ounces (390ml)

If a small size is one of your top priorities, the Fresh Juice Personal Blender is worth your consideration. In our tests, it was able to tackle nuts, frozen fruits, and ice, creating thick smooth textured drinks without any bits left behind.

Because the mouth of the jar is narrow, we have to cut fruit into small pieces and crush ice cubes to get them into the jar. You can drink the finished smoothie from the blender or pour it into a glass.

We find the design of the Fresh Juice with its loop handle attractive. However, we are not happy in its ease of use.

The narrow opening of the jar was easy to drink from but difficult to fill. That was especially true with protein powder and leafy greens. The jar also has no measurements.

As the print in the manual is small, it’s difficult to read. All parts must be washed by hand. This blender gets a little messier than others because of the way the jar slips over the base.

A cable with a magnetic charging base comes with the machine. That makes it very convenient to charge when you have a place to set the base down, but it could be inconvenient in the car. It also means you can’t use a generic USB cable. The blender base and the jar lid are available in black, white, pink, and yellow.

Product image of PopBabies Portable Blender

  • Dimensions: 3.2"D x 3.2"W x 10.2"H
  • Weight: 1.3 pounds (blender), .49 pounds (cup)
  • Capacity: 14 oz.

Considering its low price, the PopBabies Portable Blender is surprisingly effective at blending. This blender includes a tray for making mini-ice cubes. When we used these cubes and frozen fruit cut into small pieces, it created a thick, frosty smoothie and cocktail. It also pulverized the almonds in our protein shake into smithereens.

After blending, the jar comes off the base so you don’t feel like you’re sipping from a blender. (The blade remains in the bottom of the jar.) The handle on the lid is easy to grasp. Our testing found it had a battery life of about 10 minutes, time enough to blend at least 10 smoothies.

The mouth of the jar is narrow, making it pleasant to drink from but difficult to fill. Fortunately, an included funnel can help you add ingredients like protein powder. The jar features clear markings in both milliliters and ounces.

All of the pieces, except for the base, can go into the dishwasher. PopBabies comes in a variety of colors.

As of April 29, 2024, this portable blender is discontinued.

Can drink from jar without blade in bottom

Product image of Devan Portable Blender

  • Dimensions: 3"D x 3"W x 9"H
  • Weight: .88 pounds
  • Capacity: 13.5 ounces

The Devan Portable Blender doesn’t have the energy to blend nuts or frozen ingredients. In fact, it struggles to process even fresh fruit or peanut butter. Bits of banana and strawberry often remained at the bottom of the jar, and kale and spinach came out in thick ribbons.

Although this is the lowest-priced blender we tested, we can’t recommend it as a good value. The print in the instructions is so tiny that we literally had to pull out a magnifying glass to read it. All the parts require hand washing.

Can’t pulverize ice, frozen fruit, or nuts

Very difficult to read owner’s manual

How We Test Portable Blenders

Left: the BlendJet 2 filled with blended smoothie next to a mesh strainer. Right: the Cuisinart Evolution X filled with green smoothie ingredients.

We blended up seven different drinks in each blender, then tasted and strained them to see how well they blended.

We tested each blender by making seven different drinks of increasing difficulty. The first test was a basic strawberry-banana smoothie without frozen ingredients.

Next, we stepped up to a green smoothie that included fibrous spinach and kale, then a protein shake containing peanut butter. To further test the power of the blender, we whipped up a protein shake with whole almonds.

At that point, we moved on to frozen ingredients: first, a smoothie with frozen fruit, then one with frozen fruit and ice cubes. Finally, we made a piña colada with frozen pineapple and ice.

We tasted each drink to determine its consistency and to evaluate the experience of sipping from the cup. Then we poured each one through a sieve. This let us assess its thickness based on how quickly it ran through. It also helped us determine whether any ingredients remained unblended.

We takek into consideration how easy it is to use the jar. We give points for a helpful owner’s manual. We check whether the parts can go in the dishwasher. We also try washing each by hand to see how easy it is to clean manually.

In the lab, we measured how loud each blender was during blending. We also calculate the battery life of a single charge. This translates to how many drinks you can blend before needing to recharge.

How do portable blenders work?

Six portable blenders sit on a white surface surrounded by berries.

There's a lot to consider when deciding which on-the-go blender is right for you.

Portable blenders are small and easy to operate. It’s got a single control button. It’s design runs automatically in short spurts.

Unlike full-size models, it doesn’t need to plug into an outlet. Rather, they charge ahead of time, often with a USB cable. That means if you’re on a road trip or at the beach without access to electricity, you can charge them in the car.

To use a cordless blender away from home, you have to carry your ingredients with you. Anything that’s perishable, like yogurt or fruit, should stay cold. If you want to incorporate ice or frozen fruit, you’ll have to travel with a well-insulated cooler.

As with any kitchen appliance, there’s a bit of food prep required. When you’re on the go, your best bet is to measure and cut your ingredients and fill the blender jar at home. That way, you don’t need to bring utensils like a paring knife or spatula to your office or gym. Just be sure to tuck a few ice packs around the blender so you’re not drinking a lukewarm smoothie.

On many models, you remove the lid to drink your beverage. Unfortunately, the sipping experience is less than optimal. The blade is still at the bottom of the jar, and there are threads around the rim. (You do of course have the option of using a straw.)

On other models, you use a blending lid containing the blade to process your drink. Then you can replace that with a sipping lid, turning the jar into a travel mug. Some also come with a protective cover for the blade so you don’t have a messy lid with a sharp blade to contend with.

Are portable blenders worth it?

Portable blenders are a great middle ground between a family-sized appliance and the compact personal blender space. They’re versatile, and great for a variety of situations away from home. As long as the model you buy is powerful enough for your needs, a portable blender is a fantastic option.

Can you put ice cubes in a portable blender?

In our tests, we find that blenders boasting power to handle nuts, frozen fruits, and ice meet the challenge. Be sure to check that any blender you’re considering claims it can pulverize them.

Tips for Using a Portable Blender

  • As these models have small capacities, plan on scaling down most recipes.
  • To keep fruits and vegetables from lodging beneath the blade, cut them into small pieces before blending.
  • Read the instructions. Unlike in full-size blenders, many recommend that you put the solid ingredients in first and then the liquid ones.
  • Before you start blending, turn the jar upside down and give it a good shake. Make sure no chunks stick to the blade.
  • Don’t blend hot ingredients.

11 Best Portable Blenders for Travel

best portable blender for travel2023

Traveling can be exciting, but finding ways to maintain a healthy diet can be challenging, especially when it comes to getting your daily dose of fruits and vegetables. This is where portable blenders come in handy.

We’ve tested various portable blenders to identify the best options that meet the needs of travelers. In this article, we’ll provide insights into our testing procedures and recommendations for the best portable blenders for travel.

So, whether you’re on a road trip or traveling abroad, these blenders will make it easy for you to enjoy your favorite smoothies and stay healthy while on the go.

Cincred Personal Blender - Smoothie Blender for Milkshake, Fruit Vegetables Drinks, Smoothie,Small Mini Food Blenders Processor Shake Mixer Maker with 400ML Travel Cup

Hamilton Beach Shakes and Smoothies

Hamilton Beach Shakes and Smoothies

The first on our list is the number 1 bestseller on Amazon: the Hamilton Beach Shakes and Smoothies personal blender. It has a 14 ounces (400 ml) capacity cup, and the cup can be taken off and you can drink your smooth on the go.

It has stainless steel blades with great ice-crushing power, and it’s all dishwasher safe. The plastic in this blender is BPA-free. It’s a compact design, but a powerful one: with a 175-watt motor, capable of making smoothies fast.

We have had the opportunity to use this product extensively and have found that it comes in six different colors, providing users with a range of options to choose from. Additionally, the drink opening in the lid is well-designed, making it easy to enjoy your blended drinks.

However, despite these benefits, it’s important to note that this otherwise perfect portable blender does have one downside – it requires a 110v outlet to work and doesn’t have internal batteries.

Ninja QB3001SS Fit Compact Personal Blender

Ninja QB3001SS Fit Compact Personal Blender

Next is the Ninja smoothie maker, the QB3001SS. Ninja is a giant in the kitchen appliance industry, and its products are regarded as some of the tops.

Having used this product considerably, we can confidently say that its most significant advantage is the powerful motor that it boasts – a whopping 700 watts.

This level of power allows the blender to effortlessly pulverize ice, and even frozen ingredients can be blended smoothly into delicious smoothies.

This should be one of the best blenders for smoothies. It has a to-go cup that you can blend directly in, with 16 ounces (450 ml), and spout lids. The only downside is that it requires a power outlet and it doesn’t have an internal battery.

Cincred Personal Blender

Cincred Personal Blender

This portable smoothie blender by Cincred is another great travel option: it’s small and powerful and has anti-spill cup technology, so you can take the smoothie cup with you in your bag without worries.

Through rigorous testing, we have had the opportunity to use this product and can confirm that the motor is exceptionally powerful, featuring stainless steel blades, and no BPA materials.

Additionally, the self-clean technology ensures that cleaning up after use is a breeze. During our testing, we found that this blender can crush frozen food and ice with ease, making it a versatile option that can handle a wide range of frozen ingredients.

Unfortunately, it needs to be plugged in, but it’s small enough to be taken in a trip for sure.

COKUNST 18 Oz Personal Size Blender

COKUNST 18 Oz Personal Size Blender

This is a large-capacity travel blender: the cup has 18 ounces (530ml), and you can take it and drink from it on the go. It has 2 power configurations, 6 stainless steel ultra-sharp blades, and a safety protection system.

Having broadly used this blender myself, I can attest to its standout feature – the rechargeable internal battery. The convenience of being able to charge it rapidly via USB-C has been a game-changer for my busy lifestyle.

With a powerful built-in battery of 4000 mAh and 7.4v, I have been able to make 25 to 30 cups of my favorite smoothies on a single charge. This portable blender has become my go-to choice for maintaining a healthy diet while on the go.

However, as it’s the case with battery blenders, power usage may vary, and it may be unable to crush the ice with low power on the battery.

GREECHO Portable Blender

GREECHO Portable Blender

This is truly the on-the-go blender: it can be used single-handed, and it looks like a fancy smoothie bottle. It has a 12 ounce (340 ml) capacity, is made from BPA-free materials, a built-in battery, and USB recharging.

It can be used while riding a bicycle, for example, or taken with you for a hike. It’s OK to carry with you anywhere, as it has smart safety protection, and it will auto-shutdown in case of overload.

One big advantage in favor of this one  – is a truly “drinking blender”, not just a portable blender. Definitely the best blender for smoothies on the go. The downside is that it struggles with ice at low power.

This item could also be a nice gift for men who love to travel .

Nutribullet GO Portable Blender

nutribullet GO Portable Blender

The Nutribullet GO is a blender to go, with a built-in battery that lasts for 20 blending cycles. It has a 13-ounce (370 ml) cup, and the cup can be taken off and you can drink from it with the drinking lid.

It’s cordless, but it comes with a USB recharging cable, and the motor has a 70-watt potency. It comes in four different colors and has a blade cover for better storage, making it one of the best single-serve blenders.

Our findings show that the cup is incredibly sturdy and durable, built to withstand regular usage without cracking or breaking easily.

However, it’s important to note that the manufacturer advises against using it with ice, as this may compromise its durability over time.

Instead, we recommended using this blender for protein shakes, where it excels in providing a smooth blend for this type of beverage.

Cuisinart RPB-100 EvolutionX

Cuisinart RPB-100 EvolutionX

This cordless blender is a hot contender for the best portable blender for travel. It will pulverize ice with a full battery and at lower powers will crush it.

It’s fully recharged in 2 hours and can go up to 20 minutes of continuous use with one charge. It has a 16-ounce (450 ml) cup, that doubles as a drinking cup. It works on a 7.4v lithium battery and is recharged via USB.

The blades are made from stainless steel. The only downside to this portable yet powerful option is the price: it’s more expensive than other options on this list.

KOIOS 850W Personal Blender

KOIOS 850W Personal Blender

KOIOS 850W Personal Blender has a copper motor with an 850w power and pulse technology.

It’s not a battery blender, unfortunately, but that is understandable given the power the motor requires. It has 304 stainless steel blades, that are extra flat and capable of grinding coffee beans.

Making drinks with this blender is incredibly fast, and without worries too: it features overloading and overheating protection. The whole cup and blade set are dishwasher safe.

It comes with two 17 ounces (480 ml) cups and one 10 ounce (285 ml) cup.

La Reveuse Smoothies Blender

La Reveuse Smoothies Blender

This option made the list because of the great quality of the materials used, the format of the cup, and the inexpensive price for what you get. This is the best budget blender for smoothies but unfortunately doesn’t have a battery.

It boasts a 300-watt power motor, with an 18 ounce (550 ml) cup shaped like a sports bottle. This cup will not feel odd if taken with you from the hotel room, no matter where in the world you are traveling in.

It’s made from BPA-free materials, has good enough blending capacity, it’s very easy to operate, and has some very good safety features.

The manufacturer doesn’t recommend crushing ice or frozen vegetables, as they can damage the product. It has self-cleaning technology.

Hamilton Beach 800W Power Blender

Hamilton Beach 800W Power Blender

We are now blending the definition of a travel blender and a full kitchen appliance. This is still a mobile blender, and you could definitely carry it in your bag.

It’s perfect for travelers that want a larger quantity of smoothies or shakes on the go. With the largest cup, 20 ounces (570 ml), and the most powerful motor so far with 800 watts of power, this blender will crush just about anything a big kitchen blender will.

Our testing has confirmed that the blades of this blender are made from high-quality stainless steel, while all other materials are free of BPA, ensuring that you can enjoy your beverages without any harmful chemicals leaching into them.

This blender is capable of both blending and pulsing, and its straightforward design makes cleaning quick and effortless.

The portable cup and anti-spill lid make it the ideal choice for those who are constantly on the go, while the dishwasher-safe design makes cleanup a breeze.

It’s not expensive, with the price being more in the mid-range, but it doesn’t have a battery. If you want power, size and still be able to transport it, this is it.

Hotsch Personal Size Blender

Hotsch Personal Size Blender

This battery operated blender is great for having at a camping site, as it’s a USB blender: it has a built-in 4000mAh battery, that can be rechargeable with a power bank. You can even charge it via a computer.

Usually, it charges completely in about 3 hours and can make 15 cups of drinks in one charge. Experiences about the longevity of the battery vary, however, and it may not be strong enough to use the battery to crush ice.

It boasts a 13.5 ounces (380 ml) cup and weighs about 0.5 kg. It has a 150w power motor, with a 7.4v. It features a one-button for convenience and holds enough strength to make smoothies really fast. It’s BPA-free, and the blades are stainless steel.

These are the 11 of the very best blenders travelers could take with them. But there’s still a question remaining: can you bring a blender on a plane ? Yes, you can.

However, you must take the blades off first if carrying it with you in the cabin, as anything sharp is not allowed in your carry-on.

Other than that, all of the portable blenders shown here are safe for traveling, even with the blades on.

Why Trust PEOPLE?

People / David Hattan

Whether you want to make a smoothie, sauce, or soup, a blender is an invaluable appliance. The only drawback? Traditional blenders are big and bulky, and they can be costly. That’s where portable blenders are a great option.

“Portable blenders are an amazing invention and a quick and convenient way to get a lot of nutrients into your diet through smoothies and soups,” says Haylie Pomroy , health strategist and New York Times best-selling author of The Fast Metabolism Diet . “Newer ones are more lightweight than ever before and can serve as both a blender and a drinking vessel," she adds.

To help you narrow down your choices, we asked culinary experts for their top picks and considered a variety of portable blenders for power source, weight, ease of cleaning, motor power, price, and more.

Best Overall: NutriBullet Single-Serve Blender

Portable blenders and NutriBullet are practically synonymous, as the brand offers several different options. This model is a top choice for Kellyann Petrucci , M.S., N.D., a board-certified naturopathic physician and weight loss and anti-aging expert. She raves about the high-powered motor and its ability to pulverize superfoods worth adding to your smoothie, like chia seeds, Brazil nuts, and leafy greens. Its 1,200-watt motor is much stronger than most portable blenders.

We also love the pre-programmed function with an automatic shut-off and the two different-sized cups with travel lids that it comes with. It also takes up very little space on the counter and is easy to clean, says Dr. Petrucci, two other musts for portable blenders.

There’s a pulse feature as well; culinary expert Catherine Smart , co-founder and CEO of Not Just Co. says that makes it great for using to whip up pesto, chimichurri, and other sauces where you want to control the texture. If you want a portable blender with a powerful motor that can handle most ingredients, this is a great pick.

Cup Size: 24, 32 ounces | Wattage: 1,200 watts | Power Source: Electric

Best Budget: Hamilton Beach Personal Blender

For a budget-friendly personal blender, grab this petite, travel-friendly blender from Hamilton Beach. This slim machine is available in several different shades and includes a travel lid for easy transportation after a midday smoothie. If your plans include hopping in the car with your on-the-go lunch, you’re set for that, too, because it has a svelte design that fits into most car cupholders with ease.

Since this is a relatively simple machine, there’s just one button to press to reach a satisfactory blend for any of your smoothies or shakes. Since the wattage is relatively low on this machine, you’ll find that it blends best if you use a good knife to cut fruit pieces very small or use the machine with softer fruits, vegetables, and liquids rather than hard chunks of ice or frozen foods.

Cup Size: 14 ounces | Wattage: 175 watts | Power Source: Electric

Best for Travel: Cokunst Portable Blender

Sure, it may be a little "extra" to pack a blender in your suitcase, but this pick is so compact and portable that you’ll barely know it’s there. Because it’s both smaller and rechargeable, it’s easy to pack and use virtually everywhere, says Petrucci, who is a fan. She also calls out the extremely affordable price and notes that it still checks all of the blender boxes despite its affordability.

It has six stainless steel blades and a 22,000 RPM motor, which gives it plenty of blending power for fruits and vegetables but may not suffice for those who need a high-powered blender. This wireless blender also has an easy, one-touch on-and-off feature, and you can recharge it with a USB-C cable. One charge takes about three hours, although there are helpful indicators on the blender base that indicate how much battery power is left. It comes with a brush cleaner, so you can wash it by hand, but you can also self-clean the cup by running the blender with clean water.

Cup Size: 18 ounces | Wattage: 150 watts | Power Source: Battery

Best Multitasking: Magic Bullet Blender

While you will need to clear out some cabinet space for the 11 different components that come with this set, it will expand your blending horizons. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option that can make more than just smoothies, this is the one.

“What the Magic Bullet lacks in simplicity, it makes up for in versatility, with the ability to whip cream, chop chunky salsa, and, of course, blend up a smoothie. Who needs knife skills when you've got one of these?!” says Smart, who lists this among her top picks. Credit the fact that it comes with two different blade attachments.

Anyone who is in a creative cooking rut will appreciate that this blender comes with a recipe book for extra inspiration. Just FYI, while the cups and lids are top-rack dishwasher-safe, the base and blades are not.

Cup Size: 12, 22 ounces | Wattage: 250 watts | Power Source: Electric

Most Powerful: Ninja Fit Compact Personal Blender

“This Ninja is super sleek, so it fits in any bag or on a sliver of countertop, but it still packs enough power to get the job done with a 700-watt motor,” says Smart of another one of her recommendations. Indeed, the wattage (while it falls short of the 1,200 watts of our best overall pick) is notably higher than the other portable blenders on this list. It's also compact, easy to use, and budget-friendly.

The cups, lids, and blades are all dishwasher-safe, a major win since the cups have some nooks and crannies around the edges that can make them hard to clean otherwise. Just keep in mind that the design requires you to hold down the cup the entire time it’s blending, as there’s no locking function.

Cup Size: 16 ounces | Wattage: 700 watts | Power Source: Electric

Best Cordless: Cuisinart EvolutionX Cordless Compact Blender

Our top cordless option stands out for its fast charge time — it takes just two hours for a full charge. And even though it’s small, this portable blender is powerful and can run continuously for up to 20 minutes on a single charge. Just keep in mind that you can't operate the blender while it’s charging.

Unlike some portable blenders, the lightweight Cuisinart EvolutionX can crush ice cubes and other hard foods. The BPA-free blender comes with a 16-ounce cup complete with a travel lid for toting drinks on the go, so you won't need to bring an insulated water bottle to drink from. It’s also dishwasher-safe, so it’s easy to keep it clean and ready for your next adventure.

Cup Size: 16 ounces | Wattage: Not listed | Power Source: Battery

Best Compact: Ninja Blast Portable Blender

This powerful, easy-to-use, cordless blender from Ninja makes it a breeze to have freshly blended drinks on the go. The portable blender is rechargeable via the included USB cable (which is short, so you’ll need to be close to a power source to charge it). The container holds a generous 18 ounces, and you can blend as many as 15 drinks on a single charge.

It also has a leakproof lid and a convenient hinged carry handle. There are separate power and blend buttons, so you can’t mix them up, and the lid and vessel are both BPA-free and dishwasher-safe. This all-in-one blending and drinking product is easy to transport and use anywhere.

Cup Size: 18 ounces | Wattage: 500 watts | Power Source: Battery

Best Compact: BlendJet 2 Portable Blender

“I really like the BlendJet because it’s lightweight and you drink right out of the blender, so you don’t have more than one thing to rinse out,” says Pomroy of one of her top choices. “It’s great for travel or as a spare blender to have at the office,” she adds. To that point, it’s even cordless and charges with a USB— one, hour-long charge yields about 15 blends.

It’s also one of the more stylish portable blenders we’ve seen, available in a wide array of fun colors and patterns that are anything but basic. While this version is five times more powerful than the original BlendJet, some may still find it a little too weak to crush lots of ice or really get things super smooth. It also shouldn’t go in the dishwasher, which may be something to take into consideration if you don’t usually hand-wash.

How to Pick the Right Portable Blender

If you’re looking for a portable blender option for travel, it’s a good idea to choose one that’s on the lighter side, suggests Pomroy. The Hamilton Beach Portable Blender , for example, which comes in at a mere two pounds, is an incredibly transportable and easy-to-store option. However, this is less important if you’re going to be keeping the portable blender out on your kitchen counter.

Power Source

Cordless portable blender options that can be charged via USB or USB-C are great for travel or at the office, when you can charge them from the port on your computer, Pomroy notes. Our best cordless blender, the Cuisinart EvolutionX Cordless Compact Blender , charges with a USB cord, so you can power it up anywhere instead of needing to be close to an outlet.

Make sure all of the components of a portable blender can easily be taken apart for cleaning purposes, Smart suggests. Bonus points if the cups, lids, and blades can all be tossed in the dishwasher. However, be sure to read the fine print, because not all of our picks are dishwasher-safe.

Motor Power

Not all portable blenders are going to be able to blend up ice, notes Petrucci, or chop up bigger pieces of frozen fruit or leafy greens. The Ninja Fit Compact Personal Blender , which has 700 watts of power, has supreme ice-chopping capabilities. Consider exactly what you like to whip up in your portable blender and choose accordingly.

Price Range

While you can find quality portable blenders at many different prices, it’s important to take into consideration how much you’re willing to spend for the features you’re looking for. More budget-friendly portable blender options like the Hamilton Beach Portable Blender are lighter on the wallet but have very simplistic features, whereas our best overall, the NutriBullet Single-Serve Blender , which is programmable, has different-sized cups and lids, and comes with a 1200-watt motor, is also one of our priciest picks.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re regularly making smoothies, soups, or sauces, then yes. These can be a much more affordable alternative to traditional blenders or food processors and will save space in your kitchen, too. If you don’t find yourself needing a blender too often, a more budget-friendly option may be your best starting point. But if you are on the protein shake or green smoothie grind, it’s likely worth investing in a high-quality machine that may be priced on the higher end to ensure quality and longevity.

Always start by checking the manufacturer’s instructions for how to clean your portable blender. Many of the portable blenders on this list include parts that are top-rack dishwasher safe (typically the cups and lids). The motor base and blades of most portable blenders can only be hand-washed or wiped with a clean cloth.

If you’re looking for a portable blender that can crush ice, you’ll want one with a powerful motor. Two of our top picks, the Ninja Fit Compact Personal Blender and the Cuisinart EvolutionX , are powerful enough to crush ice.

Melanie Rud is a beauty and lifestyle writer who covers a wide array of topics. While she owns a very large, traditional blender, it’s her portable one that she reaches for daily to make her morning green smoothie. In compiling this list of the best portable blenders, we compared critical purchasing decision factors such as each blender's price, size and weight, power supply options, ease of use, motor power, and versatility. In addition, Rud interviewed a culinary expert, a celebrity nutritionist and board-certified naturopathic physician, and a certified nutrition consultant to gain their insight. This article was last updated by PEOPLE commerce writer Alyssa Brascia , who added new product picks.

Description for Personal Size Blender, Portable Blender, Battery Powered USB Blender (White)

Shake the bottle to make the juice more delicate ¼ ¼ Here are some first-time tips that we hope will help you: 1. When you receive the machine, charge it for 3-5 hours first. Note that when charging is normal, the light on the charger lights up like breathing. When fully charged, the indicator light stays on. If the light is not on, the charger may not be making good contact with the bottle. 2. Please clean the bottle after fully charged, put the cut fruit into the bottle, add an appropriate amount of water or milk according to the amount of fruit, then tighten the bottle lid and base, double-click the button at the bottom to turn on the machine. If you find that the machine cannot be turned on and the button flashes red, it means that the bottle lid or base is not tightened, please tighten it and try again. 3. Press the button once you can stop the machine. Please apply force evenly when pressing the button, so as not to collapse the button. If the button collapses, try pressing it multiple times in different positions to restore it. 4. The charger of the juicer is a magnetic charger, please make sure that the magnetic suction points are completely matched, otherwise it will not be charged. It normally needs to be charged for 3-5 hours, if the charging time is too short, the usage time will be shortened. 5. If you find that any part is missing, or the part is damaged in transit, please contact us in time. Specification: Product Size: 3.23X3.23X8.59 inch Product Weight: 490g Bottle Capacity: 350ml Bottle Shell Material: Food Grade ABS Charging Time: About 3-5 Hours Full charged using time: 8-10 Times Battery Capacity: 1400mAh 7.4V
