Virgin Voyages is a new cruise line entering the market and they are on a mission to build a bold new cruise line, to make sailing the ocean an exhilarating experience.

Richard Branson has brought together the most inspiring partners to build a ship worthy of breaking barriers (and waves). The new ship, Scarlet Lady, is in part an ode to the heritage of Virgin (Scarlet was one of the earliest Virgin Atlantic planes) but also part of the pledge for a future of gender equality.

They have a new program ‘the Scarlet Squad’ which is seeking to help women flourish in industries previously occupied exclusively by men. Ships, like everywhere on the planet, are made better when all of us are involved.

In joining Scarlet Lady , Captain Wendy Williams will become the first Canadian woman in history to captain a ship for a major cruise brand.

The new cruise line says it will make real sea-change in the cruise industry with the launching of their first 110,000-ton, 2,750-passenger cruise ship named Scarlet Lady in 2020, and additional two ships which will sail starting in 2021 and 2022. Your Stories: A chance encounter on a Virgin Voyages cruise secured a live-changing operation

Cruise specialist Col Ord also tells Andrew McQuarrie about setting up his homeworking agency

Q. How did you get started as an agent? I would always have friends and family coming to me for advice and I became quite used to booking their holidays for them. I’d met travel agents who worked with InteleTravel and thought, ‘I can do a nice little side hustle here. I’m not expecting to do anything crazy but it will be fun.’ That’s where things started. I set up Travel Less Ordinary in August 2022.

Q. How’s the business going now? The two brands I sell are Virgin Voyages and Celebrity Cruises, with the former my biggest by far. For wave season this year, I was one of the top five sellers for them in the UK and won the chance to have tea with Sir Richard Branson on Resilient Lady. On average, my business is getting between seven and eight enquiries a week and 60%-70% of those are converted into sales. A lot of the clients are new to cruise. The business has taken off in a way I didn’t expect it to. It’s evolved through word of mouth and the high levels of service I deliver. Probably around 30%-40% of my sales are repeat customers.

Q. What’s the biggest booking you’ve made? I booked 33 cabins with an average cabin value of £6,000 for a 2026 Panama Canal cruise with Virgin Voyages, which came to a total value of £198,000. Two of the clients wanted suites and I managed to get them even though there was such high demand – they sold out within 20 minutes.

Q. What are your ambitions for the business? Continued growth and continuing to diversify what I can offer – it’s about showing my client base that I’m not just a one-trick pony in the cruising market. I’m never going to be the type of agent you come to for a weekend in Benidorm or 10 days in the Algarve. But the more long-haul and bespoke experiences are something I’m good at. I need to make some key decisions on how big the business can grow while still being able to maintain the same high level of service.

Q. Can you tell us about your mobility challenges? I’ve suffered with obesity since I was seven. In 2022, I was 35 or 36 and walking with crutches, unable to take more than two or three steps at a time. It was a pretty horrific period of my life. In December 2021 I’d been on holiday to LA, but it wasn’t at all enjoyable because the flights were particularly uncomfortable due to my size. The decision was made for me that I needed to make some changes in my life.

Q. What did you do to help the situation? I needed some time alone to think about how to solve this problem. I’m a Virgin Atlantic gold card holder and there was a killer offer in the market to get people on the ships. I had never been on a cruise at the time, but I thought I would do a week in Barcelona, sit on my balcony and consider what to do.

Q. How did that work out for you? To be honest, it couldn’t have gone better, but not in the way I’d imagined. On day six, I was sitting in the pool at the mid-ship chatting to an Irish guy of a similar age to me. He asked why I wasn’t going to the David Guetta gig in Ibiza and I said it was because of the crutches and my size. He told me he was a bariatric surgeon, so we exchanged numbers and met for a coffee the next day.

He said, ‘For the size you are, you’re going to struggle to find someone who will operate on you, even privately.’ He said the best option was going down the NHS route and asked where I lived. I said Peterborough, and he looked at me in disbelief. When I asked why, he said Peterborough didn’t do bariatric surgery so they outsourced it to Homerton in north London.

And he said the really weird thing was that he was actually the lead consultant for bariatrics at Homerton. I was flabbergasted. After the cruise I went to the GP, where I experienced a little bit of resistance, but the surgeon from the cruise helped me by emailing the GP and explaining the situation. He ended up doing the operation for me.

Can you tell us about your other career?

I’ve worked in the railway industry for 17 years and done all kinds of jobs. One that I’m particularly proud of was being manager at King’s Cross. A Harry Potter movie was filmed at the station while I was there. They actually took over two of the platforms and part of the station became a film set for two days. I also met the Queen as part of my duties at King’s Cross. One of the other stations I worked at hosted Tom Cruise to shoot a Mission Impossible film.

We closed the station and he came down and did some stunts. He was really nice, very personable. The whole experience was a lot of fun and remains one of the highlights of my career. When we eventually saw the film, it was only a 15-second sequence but it was such a big set-piece for us – we’d spent weeks and months working on it. I’ve done a lot of huge and exciting things in the railway industry. As I’ve grown up I still consider it to be a great industry, but it’s not as much of a passion for me anymore.

Virgin voyages names scarlet lady as first ship to get makeover.

Scarlet Lady will be the first ship in Virgin Voyages’ fleet to undergo a major revamp since the line’s launch in late 2021.

The ship will head into dry dock over 14-28 November to undergo refurbishments before embarking on a series of longer voyages this coming winter.

These include a 16-night transatlantic journey from Rome to Miami, as well as a six-night sailing in the western Caribbean and an eight-night cruise in the eastern Antilles. 

“Since her much-anticipated debut in 2021, Scarlet Lady has sailed the world, welcoming hundreds of thousands of Sailors [guests] while delivering irresistible vacations,” said Nicole Huang, Virgin Voyages’ vice-president of fleet experience.

“We’re listening and giving travellers more of what they’ve asked for – more suites, luxe new cabanas and fresh, vibey dining concepts – so sailors can truly live the life of a rockstar.”

To meet demand for suites, several of Scarlet Lady’s sea terrace cabins on deck 11 will be converted into 24,352sq/ft suites. These have been reimagined by UK industrial design studio Tom Dixon, with each suite featuring a European king size bed, open shower and additional decor.

Meanwhile six new VIP cabanas, which can be booked individually or as part of a larger group, will be added in front of the swimming pool.

Virgin's Scarlet Lady set for major upgrades during 2024 dry dock

Virgin Voyages ' Scarlet Lady is set for significant upgrades during a dry dock period from November 14th-28th, 2024. The enhancements will include new suites , refreshed dining concepts, and expanded bar and lounge areas.

To meet growing demand, several Sea Terrace cabins on deck 11 will be converted into 24 "Seriously Suite" RockStar Quarters. These 352-square-foot accommodations will feature a European king bed, Peek-a-Boo shower, in-room record player with vinyls, a stocked bar, and the brand’s iconic Yellow Leaf hammock. Additionally, the Razzle Dazzle restaurant will introduce a new evening concept, Lucky Lotus by Razzle Dazzle, offering a Chinese-inspired menu and craft cocktails in a more intimate setting.

The Galley’s coffee bar, Ground Club Too, will transform into a full-service lounge at night, offering elevated cocktails in a relaxed atmosphere. Meanwhile, The Wake, a steak and seafood restaurant designed by Roman and Williams, will adapt its raw bar to highlight an exclusive selection of premium wines.

On the upper deck, 6 VIP cabanas with luxurious daybeds will be added overlooking the Aquatic Club, available for private bookings or group celebrations. The ship’s casino will be upgraded with additional slot machines, while the spa will introduce a new couples treatment room alongside the existing Thermal Suite.

Upon completion of the renovations, Scarlet Lady will embark on a 16-night trans-Atlantic voyage from Rome to Miami , followed by 6- and 8-night Caribbean itineraries.

Virgin’s Scarlet Lady Slated for Fall Drydock Updates

Virgin Voyages’ first vessel is heading into dry dock from Nov. 14-28 for a handful of cosmetic upgrades, according to a press release.

“Since her much-anticipated debut in 2021, Scarlet Lady has sailed the world, welcoming hundreds of thousands of Sailors on-board while delivering irresistible vacations,” said Nicole Huang, VP of Fleet Experience. “We’re listening and giving travelers more of what they’ve asked for – this includes more suites, luxe new cabanas and fresh, vibey dining concepts – so Sailors can truly live the life of a rockstar.”

Among changes, Razzle Dazzle, currently admired for its veggie-friendly brunch and bold interiors, will introduce a new evening concept with enhanced ambience that comes alive at night (pictured above).

“Lucky Lotus by Razzle Dazzle” will welcome a daring, Chinese-inspired menu with delicious craft cocktails, the company said, and will be be paired with a stylish design that swaps communal tables for intimate, loungey booths.

Several Sea Terrace cabins on deck 11 are being converted to create 24 “Seriously Suite” RockStar Quarters. The most popular among the suite categories, Virgin Voyages’ Seriously Suites measure 352 sq. feet with a European king bed, Peek-a-Boo shower, vanity, in-room record and vinyls, a stocked bar and the brand’s trademark Yellow Leaf hammock.

“We wanted to give our Sailors a taste of the rockstar life and worked with Tom Dixon to design the 78 RockStar and Mega RockStar Quarters. They did such an amazing job, and there’s so much demand – our Massive Suite is often booked a year or more in advance. We’re answering in a big way by adding suites, so more people can live their best lives,” Huang added.

Ground Club Too, the sought-after coffee bar in The Galley (Virgin Voyages’ modern food hall), will still serve Intelligentsia Coffee to jumpstart Sailors’ day, but by night, transform into a full-service bar with intimate lounge space and elevated cocktails, according to a statement.

Countertop seating, sleek emerald benches, rust-colored couches and wood-slatted accents take the space from energy-inducing breakfast cafe to sophisticated nighttime hangout.

At The Wake, a glamorous Roman and Williams-designed steak and seafood restaurant, the raw bar will be readapted to display the eatery’s impressive collection of high-end wines.

The ship’s non-smoking casino will expand, adding additional slot machines along with exclusive spaces.

Redemption Spa will see the creation of a couples treatment room where duos can recharge. The current Thermal Suite, outfitted with oversized portholes, heated quartz beds, a steamy mud room, cold-plunges, sauna and salt room, remains untouched.

Finally, Scarlet Lady will debut a new mermaid on its bow, a symbol of strength and safe passage for the seafaring brand.
