Traveling with a baby is a bit of a hassle. But not if you have a travel cot! In this article, we provided you the best travel cots for traveling.

List of 10 Best Travel Cots for Traveling with a Baby

While traveling with a baby, for both near or far trips, comfort is a parent’s top priority. One of the most needed to support a baby’s comfort is a place to sleep. There are various types of cots that parents can choose for their babies. But before deciding to buy, it’s good to know the important aspect of the cot.

Description

Travel cots are babies’ places to sleep and sometimes play. It can be easily operated by traveler parents. The cot must be easy to fold, does not require a lot of space, and easy to pack. Generally, travel cots are made of high-quality plastic or metal and surrounded by nets that can make a child comfortable while in it. All in all, the bed is mostly equipped with a removable soft mattress.

The exact duration used to determine the level of comfort of the baby. As the baby keeps growing, the time of using the cot has to be adjusted as well. For example, the bassinette type is only suited for newborns, and the infant or toddler shouldn’t use it.

Weight and Dimension

It is essential for parents who have high mobility, whether by car, train, airplane, even if just for a walk. As for airplanes, for example, the amount of luggage in a cabin or baggage is limited. You shouldn’t bring a heavy travel cot, because it will add costs if it exceeds the limits specified by the airline.

Also, if you have high mobility, a heavy and big travel cot will be adding the burden for parents. It’s best to use a lightweight and foldable cot, so it doesn’t take place and burdening.

There are many types of travel cots that are not only used as baby cots but also as a playpen. In fact, some travel cots are equipped with wheels to facilitate their mobility, and some others do not have wheels.

Easy to Setup and Pack

A travel cot that is easy to install and fold can save your time while traveling. To get used to installing and folding the travel cot, you have to practice before taking it. Practicing is also to ensure that each component of the travel cot can function perfectly.

Accessories

Some types of accessories that usually included in the travel cot package include:

  • First, mattress. You have to consider the comfort level of the mattress. Some manufacturers provide mattresses that are sometimes too thin or too hard;
  • Carry-on-bag;
  • Lastly, the net. Net is important for those of you who will be traveling to places with high humidity that have a lot of insects.

Babies are messy, and accidents happen. A cot that can withstand quite a few accidents from your baby is a great choice. Look for a mattress pad that can be removed or washed and a polyester material that wipes down easily. A cot that can comfortably handle the outdoors, stains, sweat, rain, and more will be a versatile and functional part of your family routine, but you’ll also want to make sure it’s still soft enough that your baby can rest comfortably inside.

Travel cots for babies are a big part of ensuring your baby is comfortable sleeping and at play r while you go about your day whether you’re at home or traveling. Picking a sturdy, soft, secure, and reliable travel cot that lasts your child a long time is key to easing your transition into new parenthood and ensuring a happy and healthy sleep and play balance in your baby’s life.

Babies don’t travel light. But if you’re planning a relaxing trip, whether it’s a UK staycation or something more exotic , you can’t skimp on the travel cot.

While some hotels and Airbnbs promise to provide travel cots for the tiniest members of the family, you’ve no idea how many children have slept on them before your little darlings, or predict what that means for how comfortable and sturdy they are. Taking a baby out of their usual safe, strong cot with a supportive mattress and putting them in a shaky cage with a rock-hard or spiky mattress is a fast way to ensure nobody in the family gets much shut-eye.

Different travel cots have different age and weight limits, so, before buying one, consider how many years of use you want to get from your cot. Size is another key factor when looking at travel cots, as those with a larger surface area can double up as a playpen in the day. Also, if you’re in unfamiliar territory and are travelling with a mini-escape artist, a travel cot with high mesh sides means you can see your child and they can see out, but they’re perfectly safe at all times.

However, size should not come at the expense of portability. Remember, you’re going to have a lot of other things to carry as well as the cot, and every extra kilo counts. Plus, heavier cots tend to be more effort to erect and collapse, and you don’t want to waste precious moments of your holiday in a sweaty mess trying to put up your travel cot.

All products in this round-up meet the European Standards for safety, which should always be your first consideration when buying a travel cot. Christina Rolles from safe sleep charity The Lullaby Trust says: “A travel cot should have a rigid frame and base, and a firm, flat mattress, covered in a waterproof material. Travel cot mattresses are often thinner and feel harder than those in a permanent cot, but don’t be tempted to place folded blankets or a quilt under the baby to make them more comfortable, as this could cause injury, suffocation or overheating.”

How we tested travel cots

Take into account any age and weight limits before you buy

With the help of a seven-month-old and a two-year-old, we tested the travel cots for size, comfort and safety. The toddler has a habit of swinging their leg up and escaping their regular cot, so we tried to find ones that kept them contained. We also tested each cot for speed of assembly and disassembly and picked it up when folded, to see if it was something that could be carried around an airport.

The best travel cots for 2024 are:

  • Best travel cot overall – Graco foldlite: £80, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best budget travel cot – Red Kite sleep tight travel cot: £27, Asda.com
  • Best travel cot for entertaining baby – Mamas & Papas joie commuter travel cot change and bounce: £190, Boots.com
  • Best lightweight travel cot – BabyBjörn travel cot light: £219.90, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best travel cot for breathability – Nuna sena aire: £250, Nunababy.eu.uk

Graco foldlite travel cot

  • Best : Travel cot overall
  • Dimensions : L 119cm x W 63.5cm x H 68cm
  • Weight : 6.78kg
  • Age limit : Suitable from birth to 15kg (approximately three years old)
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to erect and collapse
  • Strong base

The foldlite from Graco is up to 30 per cent lighter than most other cots, which we definitely noticed and appreciated – you can easily lift it one-handed. You might even find it lighter than your nappy bag, which is a win if you’re carrying a lot of other luggage for your trip.

Erecting this cot was a joy – taking less than 30 seconds. All you need to do is unwrap the mattress, push up the sides, put the mattress in the bottom and it’s ready to go. Collapsing it is just as simple – it folds up super thin, too. We also liked the sturdy material and strong base. It’s a great price at £80 and it’s made to last.

Red Kite sleep tight travel cot

best travel cot

  • Best : Budget travel cot
  • Dimensions : L101cm x W72cm x H71cm
  • Weight : 7.1kg
  • Age limit : Suitable from birth to 15kg
  • Budget-friendly
  • Mattress quite stiff

This is the cheapest travel cot we tried but it’s perfectly functional. It’s safety-tested, comes with a carry bag, is easy to assemble and has mesh sides, to give you a clear view of your child as they rest or sleep.

It doesn’t win any prizes for design, as there are no frills – it’s simply a place to sleep. Plus, the mattress is a tad on the stiff side, so you may want to spend some of the money you’ve saved on the cost of the cot on a plumper mattress. However, it’s still a very good choice if you’re only going to use it now and then throughout the year.

Mamas & Papas joie commuter travel cot change and bounce

Best travel cot

  • Best : For entertaining baby
  • Dimensions : L106cm x W70.5cm x H80cm
  • Weight : 14.8kg
  • Excellent value for money

This is a travel cot, changing table and bouncer in one, so you can create a home from home for your baby when you travel. The bouncer is a decent size, providing a place to relax and play for babies too young to sit up. It even has cuddly toys for little ones to reach and grab.

The starry print, which is exclusive to Mamas & Papas, gives the smallest babies something to look at to help them make sense of the world, and this also helps older kids relax. We suggest counting the stars on the mattress to encourage early numeracy skills in a fun way.

This cot is taller than most others we tried, which is great if you have a mini Houdini. It makes for an excellent play and sleep solution to keep at grandparents’ house and works out at excellent value for money, when you consider it’s three useful items in one.

BabyBjörn travel cot light

Best travel cot

  • Best : Lightweight cot
  • Dimenions : L 112cm x W 82cm x H 64cm
  • Weight : 6kg
  • Age limit : Suitable from birth to three years
  • Easy to set-up
  • Kind to sensitive skin

This gets top marks for ease of setup. There’s no need to bend down or fiddle with anything on the floor – all you need to do is shake it out and then secure the sides. There’s a handy YouTube video showing how to put it up in just 25 seconds, and the presenter demonstrates it isn’t even going at top speed.

Weighing just 6kg, including the carry bag, your back will thank you when you’re taking it in and out of cars or planes. Our toddler tester approved of the mattress, which makes for a cosy sleeping place. But what we liked most about this cot is knowing that its fabric is OEKO-TEX-approved, which means all materials coming into contact with your baby’s skin are kind to sensitive skin.

Nuna sena aire

Best travel cot

  • Best : For breathability
  • Dimenions : L107cm x W73.5cm x H74.5cm
  • Weight : 12.26kg
  • Soft and sturdy

If you’re all sharing a bedroom when you travel, it may get stuffy very quickly, especially if it isn’t an air-conditioned room. We like how the Nuna sena aire addresses this issue with its mesh sides, floor and mattress providing 360 degrees of ventilation, for ultimate airflow. The better a child can breathe, the deeper they sleep, giving everyone a more relaxing trip.

We were really impressed by the feel of the triple-layered mattress, which is designed to pull away heat and humidity, and will come in useful if you’re jetting off to tropical climes.

Its clever zigzag leg design pops open easily into a soft, sturdy dreamland and it’s one of the easiest to collapse – we found we could do it one-handed.

Silver Cross slumber carbon travel cot

best travel cot

  • Best : For style
  • Dimensions : L 112cm x W 80cm x H 67cm
  • Weight : 6.25kg
  • Newborn inserts

The first thing to note is this comes with a premium duffle bag carry case, so you’ll look stylish when you arrive at your destination. Open the cot – with ease, as it weighs just 6.25kg – and you’ll notice the material on the top and sides feels very high-quality. The decently padded mattress caused our two-year-old to exclaim, “I like ’dis one!”

We really liked the newborn insert, which raises very young babies to typical bed height, so you don’t have to break your back lifting them in and out of the cot. It also makes it easier to nurse a baby and transfer them back to a cot. If you’re using this as a playpen, you’ll also appreciate that one of the sides unzips, so tots can crawl in and out.

Kinderkraft lovi 3-in-1 baby crib

best travel cot

  • Best : For fussy babies
  • Dimensions : L 88cm x W 61cm x H 85cm
  • Weight : 5kg
  • Age limit : Suitable from birth to 9kg
  • Rocking motion
  • Time-consuming to set-up
  • Newborns will outgrow it

While it takes a bit of time to erect this travel cot and rocker, there’s a very good YouTube video to show you the process. You can access it via a QR code on the instruction leaflet included, and it’s very simple to follow along.

The rocking motion is brilliant for little ones that need movement to settle, mimicking the gentle swaying motion of the womb. Babies are at a higher level in this cot, too, so you can pick them up and settle them down without pulling a muscle.

The only slight downside to this cot is that a baby will outgrow it within the year. That said, our youngest tester loved playing with the toy bar and three adorable hanging toys that come with it, so, while their time in it may be short, it will also be very sweet.

Bugaboo stardust travel cot

  • Best : Two-in-one cot and playpen
  • Dimensions : L 64cm x W 98cm x H 85cm
  • Weight : 6.7kg
  • Age limit : Suitable from birth to two years old
  • Keep its shape well
  • Newborn insert
  • Mattress is a little fir

Setting up this pop-up travel cot was a total breeze, despite how tall and strudy it is once erected. We were surprised by how much the mattress kept it’s solid shape, with no crease or fold from being flat-packed within the cot and travel bag.

Mums will be grateful for the newborn insert, which raises babies to bed level. The breathable mesh is ideal for all seasons to keep baby’s temperature regulated.

The mattress is nicely padded for playtime but feels a little firm for bedtime. When topped with a matrress protector and Bugaboo’s breathable fitted sheet (£27.95, Bugaboo.com ), we nailed baby’s recquirements for a peaceful snooze. You really do get more bang for your buck with this travel cot, as it doubles up as a playpen and lasts until your little one is two years old.

Halo flex portable bassinet

  • Best : Portable bedside crib
  • Dimensions : L75cm x W100.3cm x H108.6cm
  • Age limit : Suitable from birth to five months

A lightweight and portable bedside crib is hard to come by, so, we were very grateful Halo’s offering ticked a lot of boxes for parents to get that reassuring ‘home away from home’ feeling when on the move.

It can be a daunting experience taking a little one away for the first time, especially when they are used to co-sleeping at home. We were delighted that this bassinet meant babies could feel just as close to their parents as they do at home. The mattress is extra soft when wrapped in Halo’s 100 per cent cotton fitted sheet (£16.64, Halosleep.co.uk ), and the cot is surrounded by breathable lining to suit all temperatures, and enable parents to keep a 360 view of baby.

We have to admit, we did use this more at home than on our travels, as it was so easy to adjust the height of the crib for when you’re sitting on the sofa during the day or when you’re sleeping at night and want to comfort your baby quickly. The side of the crib lowers easily, with no need to stand up or hunch over. This is particularly helpful for mums recovering from C-section delivery as well as for night feeds.

An over-the-shoulder carry bag comes included but it is less sturdy than other holdalls we’ve tested, and one side is partially open, due to its drawstring closing, which didn’t feel as secure. The packing away was a simple enough four-step process.

Fisher-Price on the go travel baby dome

  • Best : For on-the-go parents
  • Dimensions : L80cm x W76cm x H71cm
  • Weight : 2.5kg
  • Age limit : Suitable from birth to five months (until babies can sit unaided)

This travel cot combines the perfect solution for on-the-go parents and tired babies. It’s lightweight, easy to set up and allows babies to nap or play wherever they are.

We love that this cot can be used indoors and outdoors, to encourage the whole family to get more vitamin D. The canopy keeps your little one protected from the sun as well as keeping out creepy crawlies.

As it folds up flat, we found it easy to keep it stored in the car for spontaneous day trips and overnight stays with the grandparents. However, it doesn’t come with a carry bag, which would have made it easier to keep clean and compact. Two overhead linking toys are included, to keep your baby entertained and relaxed.

ergoPouch easy sleep portable crib

  • Best : For summer use
  • Dimensions : L80cm x W49cm x H27cm
  • Weight : 2.2kg
  • Age limit : Suitable from birth to 9kg (or when baby starts rolling over)
  • Ideal for summer
  • Short-lived usage

You can’t get any more portable than this lightweight pop-up cot that folds up as a small rucksack and weighs just 2.2kg. The mosquito net is ideal for summer babies, if you want to get some fresh air and let them have a safe daytime nap outdoors.

If you are travelling with a baby less than three months old on a flight, we recommend taking this one for sleeping on-the-go, if you get the luxury of seats with extra leg room. The backpack will fit neatly under your seat or in the overhead lockers.

The only downfall is this bassinet is only suitable until your baby shows signs of rolling over, so it’s quite a hefty price for short-lived use.

Travel cot FAQs

What age is a travel cot for.

This will depend on the cot you buy – bassinets are designed for newborns up to three months old, while larger options are available for children up to five years old.

Can a baby sleep in a travel cot every night?

It’s not recommended to use a travel cot regularly for a long period of time, as they’re not designed to support your baby’s development. Instead, limit their use for short trips away and daytime naps.

What to look for when buying a travel cot

You already have enough to think about while travelling with your baby, so the best cots are hassle-free. They should be easy to assemble, collapse and store, while the addition of wheels and a carry bag should make cots easier to transport from A to B. If you’re shopping for a newborn up to three months old, a bassinet is the way to go – these are raised, to give you a clearer view of your little one during the night, while you can lift them up without the risk of throwing out your back.

Do travel cots need a mattress?

Yes – the cots themselves are thin and hard, so a mattress is essential, though most of our top picks come with a mattress included.

The verdict: Travel cots

The Graco foldlite is excellent value for a lightweight cot that’s easy to erect and collapse, and we felt both our seven-month-old and two-year-old testers were safe in there. It will grow with your child, and provide a secure place to sleep and play for up to three years.

The BabyBjörn travel cot light also deserves praise for ease of setup and for the comfort of its mattress, while the Mamas & Papas joie commuter travel cot solves three of a baby’s needs – sleep, play and hygiene – in one neat package.

Before your bundle of joy is born, you will need to buy a crib or cot bed so that your baby has a safe and comfortable sleeping spot for day and night, and that's where our list of the best cot beds and cribs comes in. Newborn babies can sleep anywhere between eight and 16 hours a day, so it's essential to find the best cot bed or crib for your baby for safe co-sleeping – getting good sleep is essential for their development.

A crib or cot is a bed designed for a baby, which has high sides, so they don't fall out. Some cribs are also bedside cribs – a bassinet-style cot that can attach to the side of your bed for safe co-sleeping. When baby is over 6 months, these can sometimes be used as standalone cribs and moved to a different place in your bedroom or into their own nursery. A cot bed is slightly larger and has removable sides, so you can turn it into a toddler bed when your child is old enough.

Whether you're looking for a bedside crib for safe co-sleeping or a baby travel cot for your next family holiday, we've got an option for you on our list. You'll find a range of options for different budgets and needs, with some options that can grow with your baby.

Best cots, cribs and cot beds at a glance: • Best crib overall : Graco Sweet2Sleep - Buy now on Amazon UK • Best cot for versatility: Maxi-Cosi Iora Air Co-Sleeper Crib - Buy now on Amazon UK • Best cot bed: John Lewis Charlotte Cot Bed - Buy now on John Lewis • Best cot for small spaces: Babymore Space Saver Cot - Buy now on Amazon UK

All our product recommendations have been put to the test by our real mum testers, taking into consideration how long the cot bed could be used for, the safety features, the size, the mattress, the ease of assembly and, of course, value for money.

The winners and runners-up for each category then appear in our top picks article for that product, along with other products that were rated highly by our team. Find out more about  how we test  and what considerations we take into account in our testing process.

Best cribs cots cotbeds

To fully put these cribs, cots and cot beds through their paces, we called on our team of mum testers to try them out over the course of a few weeks with their babies and toddlers. We asked them to consider various factors that we know to be important to parents when they’re looking for the best cribs, cots and cot beds for their little ones. These included how easy they were to put together, their design, support, comfort and value for money. We also asked them to give each a score out of 5, and score each of the criteria individually.

By thoroughly testing and reviewing these key aspects of a crib, cot or cot bed, we’ve been able to compare and contrast each to be sure that you’re getting the most in-depth and firsthand feedback from parents just like you, helping you to make an informed decision when buying the best cribs, cots and cot beds for your baby. The best cot for you may depend on your priorities. For instance, the Graco Sweet2Sleep scored highly for safety and versatility but lacks a storage basket underneath, which our testers favoured in the Maxi-Cosi Iora. Equally, testers noted the gentle rocking of the Babymore Air Motion Gliding Crib while one felt that the SnuzPod4 had a more jolty rock, so bear this in mind if you like to rock your baby to sleep.

A number of the cots are still being put through their paces with our testers and we'll be updating this guide with our findings once they've been thoroughly tried and tested.

The Best Cots, Cribs and Cot Beds for 2024

Cribs and cots, 1. graco sweet2sleep, best crib overall.

Rrp: £ 80.00

The Graco Sweet2Sleep is a recent Gold Winner for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the Mother&Baby Awards 2024. This well-deserving award-winner ticks a lot of boxes for new parents. Not only is it easy to put together, it’s designed to be easy to use as well, with an adjustable side rail that can be moved with one hand. One of our testers felt that her "baby [was] more secure" in the Graco Sweet2Sleep compared to options with a zip pull-down version while another tester noted that the easy access side rail helped when she was recovering from the birth. As well as being convenient and easy to use, the drop-down side rail allows for safer co-sleeping and makes night time feeds easy. Even when the side rail is up, the mesh panel provides clear visibility so you can watch your baby sleeping peacefully while enjoying a restful night yourself. Parents felt this offered a greater bonding opportunity, keeping your baby close-by, within easy reach and allowing you to see them at all times.  You don't need to worry about it fitting your bed, as there are 11 height adjustments to choose from, and it also works well as a travel cot, as it's lightweight and easy to store and transport in its own carry bag. Parents noted that this allowed them to keep the cot downstairs and carry it upstairs when they went to bed, making it a more versatile option. Plus, with four tilting options when not attached to the bed, you can change the position to soothe indigestion and tummy discomfort, enhancing your baby's comfort throughout the night.

We tested this product as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2024, where it won Gold for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket.

2. Maxi-Cosi Iora Air Co-Sleeper Crib

Best crib for versatility.

Rrp: £ 229.99

The Maxi-Cosi Iora Air won the Bronze award for Best Cot, Crib, or Moses Basket at the Mother&Baby Awards 2024, and has proven equally popular with parents. Dual purpose, the Maxi-Cosi Iora Air can be used as both a co-sleeper and stand-alone crib, providing versatility for nap and bed times. This also allows parents to start out co-sleeping and transition to a stand-alone crib when the time is right, allowing your baby to stay in the same bed for 6 months. The rocking mechanism is a handy and easy to use feature that allows you to rock your baby to sleep when needed though some users found the rocking function slightly stiff at first. Parents noted that the all-round mesh improved airflow and breathability, as well as allowing them to see the baby without dropping the side. Five different height positions and an easy co-sleeping slide function keep your baby close, safe, and secure, with the option to adjust one side higher to alleviate reflux. It’s designed to suit your baby from 0-6 months, and many reviewers praised the size and depth as allowing the baby plenty of space.  Unlike the Graco Sweet2Sleep, the Maxi-Cosi Iora Air boasts a storage basket underneath for essential items, though some parents mentioned that this is hard to reach when in bed as it sits snug against the side of the bed. It is foldable and comes with a carry bag so reviewers felt it could also be used as a travel cot. Testers also praised the stylish, contemporary design and eco-friendly 100% recycled fabric.

We tested this product as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2024, where it won Bronze for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket.

  • Versatile as both a co-sleeper and stand-alone crib
  • Easy to fold for storage and transport
  • Large storage basket underneath
  • Easy to use
  • Hidden wheels to allow easy movement when needed
  • Rocking function
  • One side can be raised to help with reflux
  • Comes with storage bag
  • Made from recycled fabrics and has a full mesh exterior
  • Some reviewers thought the mattress was too firm

3. Graco Side-By-Side Bedside Bassinet

Best affordable crib.

Winner of the Bronze award for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the Mother&Baby Awards 2023, the Graco Side-by-Side Bedside Bassinet offers excellent value without compromising on features. Designed with convenience in mind, the Graco Side-By-Side is lightweight and easily portable, with a one-step fold mechanism which allows for quick setup and storage. Not only does it function as a bedside bassinet, but it also converts into a travel-size infant bed with the removal of its lower legs, making it a practical choice for family trips or visits. Our mum tester, Nicole found it simple to put up, which is ideal if you're planning to use it as a travel cot. "The bassinet has a simplistic design, making it easy for one person (even in my case, while pregnant) to assemble. It is lightweight, requires no tools, comes in just two parts, and takes less than 10 minutes to set up. I love how easily this product can be folded down and back up again, and the travel bag that comes with it makes travelling with it even more convenient." The spacious sleeping area and mesh sides allow you to see your baby easily, providing you with peace of mind. One reviewer felt the large storage basket was helpful for keeping baby essentials within easy reach, and noted this was particularly helpful when she was recovering from a C-Section. While our reviewer said the height of the crib was adequate - "not too low down or high up" - it can't be adjusted, making it less adaptable than some others on our list.  Though it comes complete with a premium quilted mattress that claims to be easy to clean, some reviewers suggested it would benefit from adding a waterproof mattress protector. Nicole felt that the mattress was comfortable, noting "I think the mattress has plenty of padding for a newborn (and it seems a lot comfier than many travel cot mattresses that I've used for my older child)." However, she also explains that there's a slight fold in the middle which "makes me wonder how comfortable it would be against the middle of my baby's back."

While the Graco Side-by-Side can be used as a bassinet or travel cot, our tester mum, Nicole felt it would be preferable as a travel cot or as one for downstairs naps. "Personally, I would most likely use this as a downstairs cot for the first few months of my newborn’s life. I prefer the bigger 'next to me' style cots for my bedroom, as I know my baby will still fit in it before moving into their own full-size cot in their own room. Additionally, I think it's a great alternative to a standard travel cot, as I always find their mattresses very hard and uncomfortable (and they always seem way too big for newborns). The travel bag and easy setup would, therefore, be my preferred alternative to a standard travel cot for approximately the first 4 months of my baby’s life."

We tested this product as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2023, where it won Bronze for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket.

4. SnuzPod4 Bedside Crib

Most stylish bedside crib.

Rrp: £ 219.00

The SnuzPod4 is the UK's "best-selling bedside crib", and it's definitely one of the most aesthetically pleasing options on our list with seven colour options to choose from. It’s also brilliantly versatile, and while it’s designed primarily as a bedside crib, we love that the bassinet base can be removed so you can move your baby around the house for naps. It’s also one of the slimmer models on the market, so ideal if you don’t have a lot of space by your bed though our tester felt her larger baby might outgrow the cot before 6 months.  The clever ComfortAir breathable system ensures your baby remains at an optimal temperature during bed and nap times with a combination of air-flow vents, breathable mesh liner, and ventilation in the base increase airflow. The two mesh sides have the added benefit of allowing you to see in and your baby to see out. Babies with reflux can be raised with its ‘reflux leg’ which can be added to the end of the crib to create a gentle incline. As with other cribs we tested, this can only be used when the cot is in standalone mode with the sides raised.  It does have a rocking feature, but our parent reviewer noted that it rocks "side-to-side in a jolty way, as opposed to a smoother, rocking chair style movement", and that tools are needed to adjust the height and to change it from bedside crib to bassinet.

  • Available in seven colours to suit your home
  • Lift-off bassinet to use around the house
  • Lightweight for easy movement around the house
  • Machine-washable liner
  • Height adjustable to suit the height of your bed
  • A more compact, slimline option for smaller spaces
  • No storage space underneath
  • More complicated to assemble than other models
  • Needs tools to adjust height

5. Chicco Next2Me Pop Up

Best crib for travel.

Rrp: £ 199.00

The Chicco Next2Me Pop Up was shortlisted for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket in our 2024 Mother&Baby Awards.

Chicco's Next2Me range is well-known for quality, usability and design, and the Chicco Next2Me Pop Up continues that trend. Shortlisted in the 2024 Mother&Baby Awards, the Pop Up is exceptionally versatile and can be used as a co-sleeper, standalone cot and travel cot. Our reviewer appreciated this versatility and noted that “it should be the only bed you’ll need for the first six months of your baby’s life”.  It can be attached to the bed using the included straps while the six height levels mean it can be adjusted to suit the height of your bed. It can also be tilted if your baby is suffering from colic or reflux, although this feature can't be used if it's in co-sleeping mode. It also has the added bonus of foldable feet so it can even be attached to beds with storage compartments. Two wheels on the feet mean it can be moved around easily if needed. It is also one of the best cots to use as a travel cot and our reviewer particularly liked that it opens up and folds flat "in just three seconds", without needing to remove any parts, making it perfect for travel. In terms of appearance, our tester felt it wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing on the market, but it's built to last and feels well-made.

We tested this product as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2024, where it was shortlisted for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket.

6. Babymore Air Motion Gliding Crib

Best gliding crib.

Winner of the Gold award at the 2023 Mother&Baby Awards for Best Cot, Crib, or Moses Basket, the Babymore Air Motion Gliding Crib boasts a gentle gliding motion that’s activated by the baby’s movement to soothe them back to sleep. Parents praised this feature in particular, noting the ‘smooth glide’ with one saying that “as soon as I placed my newborn in this crib, he settled immediately. I love the fact that I can rock him whilst I am in bed.” While this crib doesn’t offer the co-sleeping potential of others we tested, it has an optimum height of 74cm and can be positioned close to the bed for easy night feeds and the mesh panels on two sides allow you to see your baby with ease. One of our mum testers noted that “The mesh sides also make it easy to see baby when lying in bed and this gives additional peace of mind”, while another felt this was also beneficial for her baby who seemed to “appreciate the mesh sides, as she is able to see everything that is going on around”. The standalone design and lightweight construction - weighing only 6kg it’s one of the lightest we tested – make it easy to move from room to room if needed and the handy travel bag allows you to transport it easily for trips away. One parent noted that "this cot is an absolute dream to assemble... it's lightweight and easy to move about, but also feels sturdy." It proved popular with testers on other practicalities, including the machine-washable crib cover, mattress cover, and reflux wedge cover.   The Reflux wedge is a good addition, helping to ease any discomfort from reflux while the mattress has a breathable fibre core and is chemical free so provides peace of mind for parents, while being comfortable for the baby.  We tested this product as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2023, where it won Gold for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket.

7. SNOO Smart Sleeper Baby Cot

Best smart cot.

happiestbaby.co.uk

If your little one is a fussy sleeper and you  really  value your eight hours, the SNOO Smart Sleeper cot could well be a game-changer. Loved by parents worldwide and a favourite with celebrities, it responds to your baby's cries by gently (and quietly) rocking your baby to sleep, paired with soothing white noises that mimic the inside of the womb.  While it doesn't have a drop-down side, you can purchase shorter legs if it's too high for your bed, which our tester found was necessary for their bedroom and allowed them to look into the cot rather than having to sit up and look over.  Our reviewer found that it was simple to put together and plug in, it looks great, and it comes with everything you need to get started - SNOO sacks, mattress and sheet included. Plus, the swaddle sacks ensure baby is kept on their back at all times. It’s worth considering that to make full use of the SNOO, you need to follow a few steps, including swaddling your baby and clipping the sleep sack into the cot. Overall, parents felt it helped their babies to get into a good sleep routine, with one parent commenting that “the Snoo really helped soothe our baby at bedtime, making it easier to put her down at night”. It's a clever piece of kit, with a mobile app, a weaning feature, access to sleep consultants, and much more, but it is an investment, so may be out of budget for some parents.

  • Can only be used as a cot, so not as versatile as other options
  • Not height adjustable (but shorter legs are available)

8. Kinderkraft SOFI

Best multi-use cot.

Rrp: £ 139.99

The Kinderkraft SOFI cot is a versatile 4-in-1 solution that's a baby cot, bassinet, travel bed, and playpen all rolled into one, offering exceptional value for money. Not only that, but the cot's safety has been confirmed by tests performed by the renowned INTERTEK laboratory, offering valuable peace of mind for new parents. The mattress has two levels so at the highest level it can be used a cot with handy storage underneath, but when your baby has outgrown the cot, the mattress can be lowered to the floor to use it as a playpen. Whether sleeping or playing, the cot is partially made of breathable mesh to allow better ventilation and a good view of your baby. A simple rocking feature can help to soothe babies and one of our testers appreciated how easy this was, saying “the clever rocking feet which can be easily flipped out to enable the cot to rock are a wonderful feature-offering that extra level of comfort for baby.” As a travel cot, the Kinderkraft SOFI can be assembled and folded up in five seconds and our testers appreciated the speed and ease of use with one saying “it is by far the easiest travel cot I have ever put up – it takes mere seconds to snap the legs into place”. However, check the measurements to be sure it will fit in your car as one tester felt it was “quite bulky. Most travel cots fold down a lot smaller and so this would take up a lot of room in the car boot”.

Read our full Kinderkraft SOFI cot review.

  • Easy and quick to assemble in 5 seconds
  • Modern design
  • Four-in-one cot, bassinet, travel cot and playpen
  • Easy to clean
  • Rocking function to soothe baby to sleep
  • Great for travel as lightweight and folds flat
  • Plenty of storage underneath
  • Offers value for money as a 4-in-1 product
  • May be too snug for larger babies

9. Babymore Space Saver Cot

Best cot for small spaces.

If you don't have a lot of space, this compact and stylish Babymore Space Saver Cot is ideal for your home and comfy for your baby. Though it can only be used as a cot, it boasts several features that make it more versatile. This includes four mattress heights which one of our testers appreciated, noting that they could “set the bed base at the highest position so I don't have to bend over to pick up my little girl. I had a very sore back after giving birth, so having this space-saver cot has made my recovery easier." As your baby grows, you can lower the mattress height to create a safer sleep environment. It can also be moved around the room easily thanks to the wheels (though these can be left off if not needed), and one tester felt this allowed her to “move it easily in and out to get past it next to my bed”.

While it will last longer than a crib or bassinet and is suitable from birth to approximately 12 months, some parents felt it would be better if it was able to last a little longer. However, this was still seen as a great, affordable option for those with limited space.

Read our full Babymore Space Saver Cot review.

  • Four mattress heights to allow it to grow with your baby
  • Two protective teething rails to keep teeth marks at bay

  • Budget-friendly and great value for money
  • Only suitable for up to 12 months which some testers felt wasn't long enough
  • One reviewer felt it would be better if it converted to a toddler bed

10. Silver Cross Westport Cot Bed

Best luxury cot bed.

Silver Cross is known for its luxury products, and the Westport Cot Bed is no different. With its mid-century minimalist design and chic oak finish, it looks stunning and will suit contemporary Scandi-design nurseries. But it’s also functional and practical, with three heights for the mattress and the potential to transform it easily into a toddler bed so it can last from newborn to around 4 years old. The mattress isn’t included, but is a standard size and Silver Cross have a range of options if you want to buy it all together.  Our tester praised the sturdiness of the cot bed, noting that although it is difficult to move when it’s assembled, when her daughter shuffles around in bed, “it doesn't move with her whereas our last one would rock slightly and occasionally knock against the wall”. With high sides and the three height options for the mattress, it's great for those with kids who might be tall enough to climb out. Our reviewer found this reassuring, commenting that “the sides of the cot are high enough that they come up to her armpits, not her waist, so when she leans on the side she isn't at risk of falling out”. However, some reviewers found that the high sides might make it harder for shorter people to reach down fully when the mattress is at its lowest level.

  • Beautiful minimalist design means it will fit well in most nurseries
  • Has higher sides which are good for taller babies once they start standing
  • Space underneath is useful for storage in smaller spaces
  • Converts to a toddler bed so can last to around 4 years old
  • Three mattress heights allow it to grow with your baby
  • On the heavier side, so needs two people to assemble and move
  • Mattress sold separately but is a standard size, and options are also available from Silver Cross

11. SnuzFino Cot Bed

Best cot bed for style.

With four colour choices, this stylish cot bed could suit any nursery, meaning it could grow with your child and also be passed on to other children, making it good value for money. Our tester was also impressed with the quality, suggesting that ‘the SnuzFino is sleek and stylish, and thanks to its solid construction, should stay as such throughout its lifespan”. For those who like to create a coordinating scheme, the range includes the SnuzFino Changing Unit and Wardrobe. Looks and aesthetics aside, it’s also a brilliantly practical option, with two height settings for the mattress, which will allow it to grow with your baby. With that in mind, the SnuzFino can take your baby from newborn to 18 months old.  After that point, you’ll need to have the Toddler Kit (sold separately), which should allow the bed to last until your child is four years old. The cot bed can be purchased separately if you don't want the toddler conversion kit, but given the price, it makes sense to opt for the kit, and our dad tester thought this was a great addition, commenting that “the toddler kit is a nice touch, with the fabric canopy offering a really cosy feel”. It's the unique design of the toddler kit which really sets the SnuzFino Cot Bed apart from its peers, creating a cocoon with the fabric canopy over the top.  The mattress is a standard size, so you could buy one from any retailer, but Snuz sells its own range of mattresses, which includes the Mother&Baby award-winning  SnuzSurface Duo .

12. John Lewis Charlotte Cot Bed

Best cot bed overall.

www.johnlewis.com

The John Lewis Charlotte Cot Bed was awarded Silver for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the Mother&Baby Awards 2024.

This solid pine Charlotte Cot Bed from John Lewis & Partners is at the top of our list thanks to its high-quality build, its lovely design, its ability to convert into a toddler bed and three height adjustments. These features mean it should grow with your baby until they’re around four years old, offering great value for money. In the early months, the higher mattress height will allow you to easily reach your baby, while the lower settings make it safer when your baby is more mobile. Once they’re old enough to move into a toddler bed, the sides can be removed, and the included footboard added to make it into a bed.  Our testers noted that it was easy to put together, even for one person, that the space underneath is handy for storage, and that even though it doesn’t come with a mattress, its standard size means it's easy to buy sheets and a mattress. A teething rail feature on the sides protects the tops of the rail, though one of our testers felt it marked quite easily, so other areas might show wear after time. Parents particularly liked the design of the cot bed, and our tester agreed, noting that “the design was very modern but also classic, meaning it can be used for generations - can be put up for other children and will still be trendy enough to have in a nursery”.

We tested this product as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2024, where it won Silver for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket.

13. CuddleCo Clara Cot Bed

Best classic cot bed.

The CuddleCo Clara Cot Bed was a Silver winner for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket in our 2023 Mother&Baby Awards. The traditional design of the CuddleCo Clara cot bed is suited to classic nursery designs and is part of a range of furniture which has the added benefit of allowing you to buy matching pieces, including wardrobes, shelves and changing tables. But it’s not just beautiful, it’s also functional, boasting three mattress heights and the potential to turn it into a toddler bed so it can suit newborns up to children of five years old. Our reviewers appreciated this flexibility, with one mum saying “My child is now standing and having the lowest position means they can stand safely without trying to climb over the sides. Safety is a big concern of mine and had no concerns with this product whatsoever, I found it to be very sturdy and well built".  As it's built last, our reviewers found that the price was justified and offered good value for money, with tester mum, Laura, saying “I love that it turns into a toddler bed as this makes the price fully justifiable as this is going to last a long time”. The only thing that might put some parents off is the lack of storage space underneath, so it's worth bearing that in mind if your nursery is on the smaller side. The mattress is not included but is a standard size of 140 x 70cm so can be bought easily from most retailers.

We tested this product as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2023, where it won Silver for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket.

14. Mamas&Papas Franklin Cot Bed

Best cot bed for storage.

The Mamas&Papas Franklin Cot Bed won Gold in the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category in our 2022 Mother&Baby Awards.

For a cot bed that stands the test of time, look no further than the Mamas&Papas Franklin Cot Bed. A Gold award winner in the 2022 Mother&Baby awards, it’s still as popular as ever with parents. This cot bed will see you through from newborn to around 4 years old. The two mattress heights allow it to grow with your baby, so it can be raised when your baby is newborn, making it easier to place them into the cot. When they become more mobile, the lower setting makes it safer, so you don’t need to worry about them climbing out. Our testers also loved the added features, such as the useful drawer which mum tester Katrina pointed out “has a soft close function which is much better than some cheaper cots with drawers”. It also boasts hanging rails which are useful for hanging clothes, muslin cloths or blankets, while the anti-bite plastic strip along the top of the cot protects the top rails from teeth.

With an ample storage drawer, it's great for those with limited space or who want to keep their space neat and tidy. While it’s one of the more expensive options on our list, the high quality craftsmanship and the fact it converts into a toddler bed meant our reviewers felt it offered good value for money, with Emma noting that “it will be passed down to younger siblings as it’s so sturdy and well made it will last through the years”.

We tested this product as part of the Mother&Baby Awards 2022, where it won Bronze for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket.

Mamas & Papas

What's the difference between cribs, bedside cots and Moses baskets?

Wondering what exactly is a 'crib'? Well, 'crib' is the American English term for 'cot' (which is used in British English), and is a bed designed specifically for a baby with high sides to prevent them from falling out. You can get lots of different styles, from bedside cribs which are used for co-sleeping, to travel cots that are compact and easy to transport, and even rocking cribs to help soothe your baby to sleep. It all depends on what you're looking for.

Cot beds and cribs – All you need to know

Choosing the right cot for you and your baby.

There are a few things to bear in mind when purchasing cot beds and cribs. We've pulled a checklist below of the things you should consider when buying a crib:

1. How easy is it to assemble? — are you pretty hands-on and a DIY queen or king, or would you prefer something more straightforward to assemble? Some cribs are significantly easier to put up than others, so remember to think about this before purchasing.

2. Do you want to co-sleep? — if you do, then you'll need to look for a bedside crib, as these have been designed specifically for safe co-sleeping with your baby. They come with a panel that you can zip down and can be pulled close enough to your bed so that you're close to your baby without bed-sharing. Also, make sure it is suitable for your bed. Your baby's mattress should be in line with your own. Many cribs have different height adjustments so this is possible.

3. How much space have you got? — some cribs are naturally bigger than others, especially ones that are designed to grow with your baby and can convert into toddler/day beds, so keep this in mind.

4. Does it include a mattress? — another key thing to consider. If it doesn't, then this will have to be purchased separately, which could end up being quite expensive. Check out our guide on how to choose a baby mattress if you need a little helping hand. We've also hand-picked a roundup of the best cot mattresses for your baby's comfort and safety.

To ensure you're buying the safest crib possible for your baby, the NHS advises to make sure it meets the British safety standard BS EN 716 . You should be able to find this number either in the instructions or on the cot itself. Other important features to look out for include:

• There's no space between the mattress and crib for the baby's head to get stuck.

• The distance between each bar shouldn't be more than 6.5cm (2.5 inches), so your baby's head cannot get trapped. They should also be smooth and secure.

• The cot must be sturdy.

• Any moving parts should work smoothly and not allow fingers or clothing to get trapped.

• Cot bumpers aren't advised, as they can cause the baby to overheat or get tangled in the fastenings.

• Never leave anything with ties in the cot with the baby as they might get caught around their neck and could choke.

• For the first six months, the safest place for your baby to sleep is on their back in a cot in the same room as you.

Why won't my baby sleep in a cot?

If your baby is struggling to settle in their cot, it may be because they've gotten used to sleeping in their Moses basket or even in your arms. As well as this, other development milestones can have an impact on their sleep, such as teething, growth spurts and illness.

According to Emily McInnes from Sound Asleep Coaching , this is very common so you're certainly not alone if your baby is refusing to settle in their cot. "We have to remember that a newborn baby is used to being right next to you for 9 months in the womb and then they have to adjust to life in the wider world. It is biologically normal and appropriate for a baby to want to be near their caregiver for cuddles and comfort. You are their safe space and unfortunately no cot will compare to your cuddles!" To help you through this transition, Emily offered Mother&Baby her tips on what you can do to support your little one to become more familiar with their cot. This includes:

- Start to familiarise your baby with their cot for naps in the daytime. Provide them comfort, reassurance and touch throughout but aim to leave them in their sleep space

- Try to incorporate some sleep associations such as white noise to help calm your baby and this can also help to create an association with that particular sound and sleep

- You can put a piece of material such as a square of muslin cloth that smells of you in their crib whilst they fall asleep and then remove this in line with the safe sleep guidelines. The smell of you may help to settle them and provide reassurance

- Rocking, patting and shushing are great techniques which you can do to support sleep in their cot

Should a baby sleep in a cot straight away?

According to the NHS , for the first six months of baby's life, they should sleep in a cot, crib or Moses basket in the same room as you for all sleep. The kind of cot you choose really depends on your budget, space and preference as a parent.

When should a baby move from a Moses basket or bedside cot to a cot?

Once they've passed the six-month mark, they can move into their larger cot in their nursery. This is the point when your baby might be getting too large for a Moses basket and need their own space.

When should a toddler transition from a cot to a bed?

Moving your toddler to a toddler bed is a big step. According to Sarah Ockwell-Smith , author of The Gentle Sleep Book, you should think about moving your little one from a cot to a toddler bed between 18 months and 3 and a half.

Signs they're ready for the big move is that they're regularly climbing out of their cot, waking more in the night, and you often find them with their arms and legs poking out of the cot.

If your toddler is struggling with this transition, Emily McInnes suggests making it a gradual process over 1-2 weeks. "The key is the 'acclimatisation' part to the process. When your child becomes familiar with their new sleep space, they are much more likely to feel more secure and will hopefully be more willing to sleep in their bed." She suggests:

- Create lots of positive associations with their bedroom and toddler bed - you can use play therapy in the day time to do this. Read them books on their bed, play some games in their room and make it an exciting new environment (longer term I would avoid toys in the bedroom as this can be associated with play and stimulation)

- You can get them to help you choose their new bedding. This will help to make them feel involved and part of the transition process

- Start putting your child to sleep in their toddler bed for naps in the daytime and then build up to nighttime sleep

Whether you're pregnant or have already welcomed your new baby into the world, you know you need a lot of stuff. The  Amazon Baby Wishlist  is the best way to keep track of everything you need for your baby - and it's easy to set up.

Infant Furnishings: Crafting Comfort for the Little Ones

With your bundle of joy at the center of your universe, the decisions surrounding their well-being become paramount. The foundation of their comfort often lies in the infant furnishings chosen for them. Explore this detailed insight into the perfect spaces created for the youngest ones.

Types of Infant Furnishings

1. cradles and bassinets:.

These are the first nesting spots, creating a cocoon of comfort. Whether you're seeking the traditional appeal of a wooden cradle , the convenience of a baby bassinet , or the cultural touch of a baby oonjal, these sleeping solutions ensure your baby’s first months are in a snug environment.

2. Swings and Jhulas:

Engaging the young one's sense of movement and rhythm, swings, whether it's a baby jhula or a baby uyyala , are more than just furnishings. A baby cradle swing gently soothes and might just be your best friend during those sleepless nights.

3. Cots and Cribs:

These infant furnishings are spacious sanctuaries for the young one. Choices range from the modern baby cribs to the traditional baby cots. Many parents are now choosing to buy their baby cot online, given the ease of selection and delivery.

4. Bedding Sets:

More than just fabric, baby bedding sets offer the soft embrace that replicates a mother’s warmth. It is crucial to ensure they are compatible with other items, like fitting perfectly inside a baby sleeping bed.

5. Travel and Portable Beds:

Mobility doesn't mean compromising comfort. A baby travel bed ensures your little one feels at home, even when on the road. Similarly, baby folding beds provide flexibility in home settings, especially when space is at a premium.

Features to Look For

1. functionality:.

In the age of multifunctional living, infant furnishings aren’t far behind. Consider the baby cradle automatic swing , which, beyond swinging, might offer music or vibration, providing more ways to comfort the baby.

The utmost priority, ensure there are no sharp edges, small detachable parts, or toxic materials. Especially when shopping for baby furniture sets, reviewing safety standards is paramount.

3. Durability:

From the sturdiness of baby cribs to the resilience of a wooden cradle, ensuring the long life of these products is key. After all, some might even be passed down generations.

4. Portability:

Especially with urban living, movable items like the baby side bed become incredibly handy. They can easily be shifted, ensuring the baby is always close.

5. Space-saving:

A baby folding bed or a baby swing bed can be a game-changer for apartments, ensuring comfort without crowding.

Materials Used

The organic touch of a wooden cradle or a baby oonjal brings in warmth. Wood, with its natural grains, also adds an aesthetic value.

Soft, hypoallergenic materials should always be sought out for baby bedding sets or even the linings of a baby sleeping bed. Comfort and safety should always go hand in hand.

Often used in more modern settings, metal, especially in baby cots, promises durability.

4. Plastic:

Found in portable items due to its lightweight nature. But always ensure it's of high quality and free from harmful chemicals.

Essential for the cushioning in bedding, it offers the plushness every baby bedding set requires.

Color Choices

1. pastels:.

The go-to for most nursery furniture, pastels like baby blue or soft pink are soothing and calming.

2. Neutral:

Whites and beiges are timeless. They blend with other décor, making them a favorite when choosing baby furniture.

3. Brights:

A pop of color can be stimulating. Think of a bright baby jhoola or colorful baby bedding sets to engage the infant's senses.

4. Thematic:

From starry nights to jungle themes, the colors can be tailored to tell a story.

5. Natural Wood:

Especially when considering traditional pieces like wooden cradle, the natural grains and tones of wood can be the highlight.

Buying Considerations

Before buying that baby cradle online, measure the room. Factor in walking space and other nursery furniture .

From affordable baby cribs to luxury baby bedding sets, there’s a spectrum. Find what suits your pocket without compromising on safety.

3. Lifestyle:

If you travel often, consider the baby travel bed. For those who co-sleep, the baby side bed is ideal.

Items that grow with your child, like adjustable baby cribs, are investments in the long run.

5. Online Purchase:

The digital age has brought the store to your screen. Whether it’s a baby cot online or a baby cradle swing, ensure you're shopping from a reputable website.
