How Do You Qualify For Champions Golf Tour?

how to qualify for champions golf tour

The PGA Tour Champions is highly competitive and exclusive. In order to qualify, golfers must satisfy the following criteria:

  • There are 78 total spots in the Tour
  • Golfers must be 50 years or older
  • Golfers must play in regional qualifier unless otherwise exempt
  • Golfers must pay a $3,000 application fee

The PGA Tour Champions is a professional golf tour for senior golfers. Many of the greatest golfers of all time have played on this tour, including Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson.  To qualify for the PGA Tour Champions, one must either be a professional PGA Golfer or a highly skilled amateur golfer who receives an exemption.

Champions Tour Eligibility

Those looking to qualify for the PGA Tour Champions must be at least 50 years of age, or 49 and turning 50 before June 1st of that year. They also must apply online and pay a fee of $3,000. With the application, at least two letters of reference from a Class A PGA Pro or Champions Tour member are required. You are also required to show a copy of your birth certificate and results from two tournaments held in the last year.

Amateurs who meet the age criteria can enter the PGA Tour Champions Qualifying Tournament. An amateur who finishes among the top 30 at this event must forfeit their status as an amateur to play in the PGA Tour Event Champions Qualifier. When you are in the top 12 of the qualifying stage, the top five will be fully exempt, and the next seven will be reserved and will be able to compete in Champions Tour events on a space-available basis.

Golfers can also earn a sponsorship exemption for a specific tournament, in which a sponsor of the golfer grants entry to the tournament. These exemptions are typically reserved for more popular golfers, as granting them entry will help the tournament’s overall brand.

How old do you need to be to qualify for the Champions Tour?

To qualify for the PGA Tour Champions, you must be at least 50 years old.  You can also qualify for the Champions Tour if you are 49 turning 50 by June 1st of that year. The Champions Tour is reserved for senior golf players that have aged out of the PGA Tour. However, golfers over the age of 50 are still eligible to play in PGA Tour events.

champions tour qualifying 2023

The final stage of the 2023 PGA Tour Champions Qualifying Tournament is this week at TPC Scottsdale.

The Champions course will host 78 players in four rounds concluding on Friday. The field includes a major champion and an NCAA champion.

In all, five players will earn their 2023 tour cards and be fully exempt into the 16 open, full-field PGA Tour Champions events (which do not include the majors).

Those who finish in spots six through 30 and ties are eligible to apply for PGA Tour Champions Associate Membership, which allows them the chance to enter 2023 event qualifiers.

There are 78 different stories in Scottsdale this week. Here are a few of the interesting ones.

Chamblee, 60, has one PGA Tour win on his resume, the 1998 Greater Vancouver Open. The Golf Channel analyst made 188 cuts in 370 PGA Tour outings, with his last event being the 2008 Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He made $4,018,410 in his Tour career. Todd Demsey, who turned 50 last summer, was a two-time First Team All-American at Arizona State and won the 1993 individual NCAA championship. A teammate of Phil Mickelson, Demsey was a PGA Tour rookie in 1997. In 1998, he won three state opens (Arizona, Utah, California) but got bit by the injury bug in 2001. He competed on the then-Buy.com Tour in 2002. In 2003, he had a pair of surgeries to remove parts of a brain tumor.

Bob May is perhaps best known for pushing Tiger Woods to the brink at the 2000 PGA Championship . None other than Ken Venturi and Jim Nantz dubbed it one of the best head-to-head duels ever.

May, 53, qualified for the Los Angeles Open when he was 16. Back problems became such an issue, he was off the PGA Tour in 2010. He has one professional victory, the Victor Chandler British Masters in 1999.

He has appeared in nine PGA Tour Champions events, with his best finish a tie for 17th at the 2020 Sanford International.

Shaun Micheel, 53, won his only PGA Tour title at the 2003 PGA Championship at Oak Hill. Nowadays, he’s the golf coach at Butler in Indianapolis.

He played four PGA Tour Champions events in 2022, including two majors. In 24 senior circuit appearances he has two top-10 finishes.

2022 Ascension Charity Classic

After turning 50 in August, Tim O’Neal received the first-ever exemption for an APGA Tour player into a PGA Tour Champions event at the Ascension Charity Classic at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis.

O’Neal has played eight PGA Tour events, his most recent at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic. He played two Champions events in 2022, posting a tie for 19th at the Pure Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach.

His biggest achievements have come on the APGA Tour, where he won nine times. O’Neal is the only Black player to have won both the Georgia Amateur and Georgia State Open.

Omar Uresti

2021 Senior PGA Championship

Omar Uresti has played in eight Champions events over the last four seasons. The 54-year-old turned pro in 1991 and has made 385 PGA Tour starts and 210 Korn Ferry Tour starts. He has two KFT wins and has three worldwide wins in all, but he never found the winner’s circle on the PGA Tour.

He’s won the PGA Professional Championship twice, victories that earned him a spot in the PGA Championship.

Five players emotionally earn pga tour champions status at final stage of q-school.

  • Max Schreiber ,
  • Max Schreiber

In one of golf’s toughest tests, five players secured full PGA Tour Champions status for 2023 at the Final Stage of Q-School.

Richard Green earned medalist honors at TPC Scottsdale with a score of 18 under, four shots clear of runner-up Wes Short Jr.

Green, a 51-year-old Aussie, is a three-time DP World Tour winner and won twice this year on the European Senior Tour. He placed T-4 at the 2007 Open Championship, but has never played full-time in the United States.

"(Earning PGA Tour Champions status) means everything,” Green said. “I’ve had a long career playing overseas in Europe and I’ve wanted to always play in America. I tried my best to get a card on the PGA Tour in the 2000s and just fell short all the time. It’s like a goal achieved, so that’s a big deal.”

Short Jr. claimed full status on the tour in which he’s already made 213 starts and won twice. The 59-year-old Texan and 2005 Shriners Children’s Open winner had only one senior tour top-10 in 2022, but will have a chance to get back in the winner’s circle in 2023 with full status.

Three players — Tim O’Neal, Brian Cooper and David McKenzie — tied for third at 13 under to claim the final three cards for next season. Finishers 6-30 and ties notched associate membership, gaining access to weekly tournament qualifiers, starting with the Chubb Classic in February.

Cooper, a native of Pittsburgh, has no PGA Tour starts to his name, but has played eight times on the senior circuit, with his best finish a T-43 at the 2019 Principal Charity Classic.

Cooper has openly battled depression this year and was overwhelmed with emotion in the scoring tent.

“It’s been a hard year,” Cooper said afterward. “I had shoulder surgery and it was pretty significant, so to get through all that, it’s pretty — it’s hard to put into words ... I worked so hard for this.”

"It's hard to put into words." ❤️ Brian Cooper ( @CoopsGolf ) was overcome by emotion after earning his PGA TOUR Champions card through Final Stage of Q-School. pic.twitter.com/2iSD0QrZPu — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) December 10, 2022

McKenzie, an Aussie who has made 102 senior tour stars, also earned his card after an emotional year. The 55-year-old left the tour early last season to see his brother before he passed away.

“I had him riding on my collar today,” McKenzie said.

And last but not least, O’Neal. The Savannah, Georgia, native is considered the elder statesman of the APGA Tour. Earlier in his career, he suffered multiple heartbreaks while trying to qualify for the PGA Tour, but this time, O’Neal was able to close the deal after gearing up for this opportunity since turning 50 in August. He earned two PGA Tour Champions exemptions earlier this year.

“Man, I’m really at a loss of words,” O’Neal told PGATour.com . “I’ve been going to Q-School for a long time, and for me to get status, my first year going to Champions Tour Q-School, just crazy happy right now. I’m at a loss for words, but it’s been a long time coming for me.”

The heady highs and heartbreaking lows of Q School

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/1/Screenshot 2024-09-04 at 9.19.18 AM.png

Joe Daley's catastrophic triple bogey at 2000 PGA TOUR Q-School

The idea came from Earl Stewart, a PGA pro, in 1963. This wasn't long before the PGA Tour split from the PGA of America, and came at a time when the PGA's touring professionals, Arnold Palmer chief among them, were beginning to command more attention and money. As the Tour grew, Stewart and many others recognized that there was a need for a streamlined path for players to actually reach the tour. At that point, it was up to local sections to screen their best players, and that "qualification" process could vary, and was not always the play-based meritocracy it should have been. When Stewart suggested an annual qualifying tournament, the idea caught on and was implemented by 1965.

Since then, "Q School" (which used to involve actual lectures on etiquette, rules, and various other topics, hence the word "school") has gone through many incarnations, and has been influenced by changes in the greater game. For several years at the start, there were two Q Schools each year, one in the spring and one in the fall, and that's because getting your card there just meant becoming one of the Tour's "rabbits"—the traveling pros who were allowed to Monday qualify each week, and whose aim was to make the top 60 in order to become full status members. That ended in '82 when Deane Beman began the era of the fully exempt Tour. When the Ben Hogan Tour (now the Korn Ferry Tour) began in 1990, it offered a second, season-long path to the Tour for pros and reduced the number of cards given out at Q School. In 2012, Q School became a path to the Korn Ferry Tour only, and that lasted until 2023, when they reverted to giving Tour cards, albeit just five of them.

94126798

MORE: The story of a Q School DQ for the ages

Throughout that history, the tournament has been ripe with drama, and there's no getting around the fact that much of the drama ended in heartbreak. When people are fighting for their competitive lives, the stakes are as high as they get, and even today players like Scottie Scheffler remember Q School as the most nervous moments of their professional lives. Maybe Steve Pate said it best when he told John Feinstein that when Tour players get together, they don't tell stories about the majors...they tell stories about Q School.
