‘my’ honda civic type r’s cruise control is so patchy i’ve stopped using it.

Matt Robinson

When it comes to driving hard on a good road, the FK8 Honda Civic Type R is the hot hatch to have. It offers a more ‘pure’ experience behind the wheel than the (now departed) Ford Focus RS . It’s sharper than the Hyundai i30 N , the surprise new darling of the segment. ‘My’ Type R will be facing off with a Megane RS Trophy soon, and although it’d be remiss of me to call it now, I don’t like the Renault’s chances.

That’s all well and good, but like most Type Rs, ‘XLL’ spends the vast majority of its time away from such twisty road antics. Sadly, I reckon most of the miles I’ve clocked have been on motorways to and from airports. And it’s during this kind of driving that the flaws start to appear.

We’ve covered a few already, like the rubbish sat nav (which I now replaced with Android Auto/Waze every journey), the reverse camera that needs cleaning every few days, and the gear knob which gets so cold I’ve bought an adorable little Type R-branded beanie to save myself from potential frostbite. But there’s one foible that rises above all others when it comes to the sheer annoyance it causes: the iffiness of the adaptive cruise control.

‘My’ Honda Civic Type R’s Cruise Control Is So Patchy I’ve Stopped Using It

When you’re going to be sat on motorways clogged with traffic and liberally festooned with 50mph roadwork sections, adaptive cruise is a great way to keep sane. Thankfully, it’s fitted standard on all ‘GT’ Type Rs. But it’s so patchy here, I’ve stopped using it on all but very late or very early journeys when the roads are dead.

It frequently picks up false readings, usually from a car one lane over when the motorway is curved. The sensors seem to think you’re about to hit said vehicle, leading to an unwelcome - but usually fairly mild - brake application. Sometimes it’ll pick up the false positive a little earlier, gradually lowering your speed even though your lane is clear for the next quarter of a mile. On the average two journey, it’ll slow down for a non-existent hazard at least a handful of times.

The assistance systems seem to be over-active on the whole. I’ve talked before about the front collision warning, which seems to flash up every single journey no matter how gently you’re driving. Many times I’ve also had the steering wheel do its feedback ‘jiggle’ thing that tells you you’re straying out of the lane, despite being a couple of feet from the nearest line.

The FK8 Type R is more useable than the FK2, but the latest hot Honda is not without its annoyances...

Most bizarre of all was a little brake grab and steering wheel tug the car decided was necessary when entering a section of roadworks. Perhaps it thought I was about to slam into the cones to my right, which I was already steering away from. I’m not sure, but whatever the cause, it was very unnerving.

It’s not a problem specific to this FK8, either. Speaking to other journalists who are running Type Rs as longtermers, overzealous assistance systems seems to be a common complaint, with the over-eager front collision warning appearing to cause the most ire.

It’s not like I’m completely averse to systems like these. The circumstance might arise where one of them could prevent an accident, after all. I just wish they weren’t constantly and pointlessly reminding me of their existence.

Mine is the same, very sensitive to every little bit of hazard. However it has saved my arse massively once driving through Derby where a car stopped over the brow of a hill, it spotted it way before me and did an emergency stop way way quicker than I ever could. So the little niggles don’t bother me

I’ve been caught by my car’s system a few times now. Once I didn’t even realize why till after the car stopped (there was a car at a dark intersections without lights) I had to get out and go for a little walk…

I bet the cruise control in my LTD is worse it likes to pulsate….

ehhhhYAehhhhYAehhhYA

You legend lmao

stop using cruise control and deal with having to put you foot on the pedal

I have - that’s literally what the title says! ;)

What’s so wrong about using cruise control while you are on the highway, where there is not much input from the driver?

You are spoiled

I am. But that doesn’t excuse poor cruise control, when almost every other car has it sussed…

If I were to pick an Element, it would actually be the Honda Element 😛

Seems like the car is meant for a specific type of driving how odd

Oh come on man turn the Honda sensing suite off like I did within two weeks and get back to basics with what is the truly last analogue hot hatch. Cruise control without an auto box is silly, Honda had loads of tech with the civic so it carried over to the Type r, but it launches in the states with non of this stuff as it’s a drivers car first and foremoat

Cruise control works perfectly in my ‘83 Mazda…

Hey Matt, you should be able to disable the adaptive cruise control and just revert to basic, speed holding cruise. I’m not exactly sure how to do it on the CTR but other Honda products allow it.

We don’t give a sh!t about cruise control. It’s a Type R. Drive it like a Type R should. CT seriously ran out of topics….

I disagree, this is the point of having a long term car for journalists, I am not in the market for a new car whatsoever as my NA does me fine, but any prospective buyer may be put off by this article if they use features like this regularly. If you don’t care for the topic maybe don’t read the article?

ACC Conditions and Limitations

civic type r cruise control

  • On roads with frequent lane-change or continuous stop and go traffic. ACC cannot keep an appropriate distance between your vehicle and vehicle ahead of you.
  • On roads with sharp turns.
  • On roads with toll collection facilities or other objects between lanes of traffic, or in parking areas, or facilities with drive through access.
  • On roads with bad weather (rain, fog, snow, etc.), ACC may not detect the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you properly.
  • On roads with slippery or icy surfaces. The wheels may spin out and your vehicle may lose the control on the condition.
  • On roads with steep uphill or steep downhill slopes.
  • On roads with undulating slopes.

How to activate the system

civic type r cruise control

To Set the Vehicle Speed

civic type r cruise control

Take your foot off the pedal and press the RES/+ / SET/− switch up or down when you reach the desired speed. The moment you release the switch, the set speed is fixed, and ACC begins.

When you use ACC, Straight Driving Assist (a feature of the Electric Power Steering system) is activated. By enabling the steering system to automatically compensate for natural steering pull, Straight Driving Assist makes it easier for you to keep your vehicle in a straight line.

Customized Features

When in Operation

civic type r cruise control

  • The vehicle ahead of you is going at almost the same speed as, or faster than, your vehicle.
  • A vehicle that cuts in front of you is going faster than your vehicle, gradually increasing the interval between the vehicles.

civic type r cruise control

  • When the vehicle ahead of you moves away, such as when entering an interchange or rest area, ACC may continue to maintain the set following-interval for a short time.

There is a vehicle ahead

ACC monitors if a vehicle ahead of you enters the ACC range. If a vehicle is detected doing so, the ACC system maintains or decelerates your vehicle’s set speed in order to keep the vehicle’s set following-interval from the vehicle ahead.

To Set or Change Following-interval

civic type r cruise control

When a vehicle whose speed is slower than your set speed is detected in front of you, your vehicle starts to slow down.

civic type r cruise control

There is no vehicle ahead

On steep downhill during ACC, it brakes to inhibit excessive acceleration for maintaining the set speed. However, the vehicle speed may become faster than the set speed.

civic type r cruise control

When you depress the accelerator pedal

The system may automatically shut off under certain conditions. Some examples of these conditions are listed below. Other conditions may reduce some of the ACC functions.

Environmental conditions

  • Driving in bad weather (rain, fog, snow, etc.).
  • Sudden changes between light and dark, such as the entrance or exit of a tunnel or the shadows of trees, buildings, etc.
  • Strong light is reflected onto vehicles or road surfaces.
  • Water is sprayed by or snow blown from a vehicle ahead.
  • Driving at night or in a dark place such as a tunnel (due to low-light conditions, the whole vehicle may not be illuminated).
  • Driving into low sunlight (e.g., at dawn or dusk).

Roadway conditions

civic type r cruise control

  • Driving on rutted roads (snowy or unpaved roads, etc.).
  • Puddles or a film of water is on the road surface.
  • Your vehicle is strongly shaken on uneven road surfaces.

Vehicle conditions

  • The vehicle is tilted due to heavy load in the trunk or rear seats.
  • Tire chains are installed.
  • The front of the camera is covered by dirt, fog, rain, mud, wet snow, seals, accessories, stickers, or film of the windshield.
  • Driving at night or in a dark place (e.g., a tunnel) with the headlights off.
  • There is residue on the windshield from the windshield wipers.
  • When lighting is weak due to dirt covering the headlight lenses, or there is poor visibility in a dark place due to the headlights being improperly adjusted.
  • An abnormal tire or wheel condition (incorrect sizes, varied sizes or construction, improperly inflated, compact spare tire*, etc.).
  • The suspension has been modified.

Examples of conditions under which the camera may not correctly detect the vehicle ahead of you

  • A vehicle suddenly crosses in front of you.
  • The interval between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you is too short.
  • When the vehicle ahead of you blends in with the background, preventing the system from recognizing it.
  • The headlights of the vehicle ahead of you are lit on one side or not lit on either side in a dark place.

Examples of conditions under which the system may not work properly

  • A vehicle ahead of you stops and the speed difference between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you is significantly large.
  • When the vehicle ahead of you slows suddenly.
  • When a vehicle ahead of you is specially-shaped.

civic type r cruise control

  • When your vehicle or the vehicle ahead of you is driving on the edge of the lane.
  • When the vehicle ahead of you is a narrow vehicle such as a motorcycle.

civic type r cruise control

  • When the camera cannot correctly identify the shape of the vehicle ahead of you.

To Adjust the Vehicle Speed

Increase or decrease the vehicle speed using the RES/+ / SET/− switch on the steering wheel.

civic type r cruise control

  • Each time you press the RES/+ / SET/− switch up or down, the vehicle speed is increased or decreased by about 1 mph or 1 km/h accordingly.
  • If you keep the RES/+ / SET/− switch pressed up or down, the vehicle speed increases or decreases by about 5 mph or 5 km/h accordingly.

Press the Interval button to change the ACC following-interval. Each time you press the button, the following-interval (the interval behind a vehicle detected ahead of you) setting cycles through furthest, far, mid, and nearest following-intervals.

Determine the most appropriate following-interval setting based on your specific driving conditions. Be sure to adhere to any following-interval requirements set by local regulation.

civic type r cruise control

The higher your vehicle’s following-speed is, the longer the nearest, mid, far or furthest following-interval becomes. See the following examples for your reference.

2025 Honda Civic Review

civic type r cruise control

  • Sharp handling makes for fun driving
  • Available hybrid powertrain for high mpg
  • Roomy seating and cargo area
  • Easy-to-use tech features
  • Intrusive road noise on the highway
  • Front seat lacks lumbar support
  • More expensive than its main rivals

What's new

  • Hybrid powertrain joins lineup
  • Updated grille and front-end styling
  • Google-based infotainment in top trim
  • Part of the 11th Civic generation introduced for 2022

The current-generation Honda Civic ranks as one of the automaker's best, with an expert combination of practicality, performance and value. Today's 2025 Honda Civic offers almost everything you could want in a compact sedan or hatchback. There's plenty of interior room and cargo space, a generous complement of in-car tech and driver assist features, and a range of power and performance options. There's also a big change for the 2025 Civic worth knowing about: a new hybrid version.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2025 Honda Civic Type R 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6M) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.17 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.

Edmunds spotlight: what to know about the new civic hybrid.

For 2025, the Civic gets a new hybrid powertrain. It matches the Si's horsepower (200 hp) but makes 20% more low-end torque. Sure, the Si comes with more performance hardware — sport suspension, larger brakes, manual transmission — but we imagine the hybrid will likely be able to match it in a straight line. On top of that the hybrid gets an estimated 49 mpg in combined driving. The only downside is that Honda has discontinued the previously available (and desirable) 180-hp turbocharged engine as part of the hybrid introduction. Other changes for 2025 include mild styling revisions and a new infotainment system that integrates some Google-based services, including a voice assistant that can adjust various car settings.

Competitors to consider

The 2025 Honda Civic sets a benchmark for the compact class, but it's worth checking out the alternatives. The Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla both offer good value, along with high-performance versions that rival the Si and Type R. The Mazda 3 punches above its weight with refined interior and crisp handling, while the Kia Forte is an all-around good pick that's easy on the wallet. Be sure to read our Expert Rating below for a deeper dive into the Civic's performance, comfort and more.

What’s it like to live with?

Our test team lived with a Civic Si for a year to learn more about how this sporty Civic works out in daily driving. While it was a test of a 2022 model, many of our observations are still applicable to the Civic as a whole. Read our Civic Si long-term test for more .

Edmunds Expert Rating

Performance, fuel economy, which civic does edmunds recommend.

The Sport trim will satisfy most shoppers. But we think it's worth the stretch to the new Sport Hybrid . Not only does it add a few more desirable features, such as a sunroof and heated seats, it comes with the punchy hybrid engine that makes 200 horsepower and gets close to 50 mpg. You might flinch at its price — and we wouldn't blame you — but we think it's ultimately the best value in the Civic lineup.

2025 Honda Civic First Impressions

civic type r cruise control

With hybrid powertrain demand on the rise, Honda is seizing the opportunity to give customers what they want with the new 2025 Civic hybrid. Two new hybrid-powered trim levels join the Civic lineup to bring Prius-rivaling fuel economy; the top-tier model offers a fresh take on technology with the Google built-in app suite.

We expect the new Civic to keep its affordable starting price of around $25,000 for the entry-level LX model. The Civic Sport slots in above that, followed by two new hybrid variants. Honda says the Civic Sport Hybrid will start “under $30,000,” with the top-trim Sport Touring Hybrid costing a bit more.

What’s under the Civic hybrid's hood?

For 2025, the base Civic LX and Civic Sport will keep their current engine. That’s a 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are unchanged for the new model.

Further up the trim ladder, the EX and Touring levels are gone, and so is the upgrade 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that powered them. In their place are the new Civic Sport Hybrid and Civic Touring Hybrid. They use the same powertrain found in the Accord and CR-V hybrids — a 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with two electric motors — though it's slightly detuned here, for a total output of 200 hp and 232 lb-ft. We expect the new hybrid models to accelerate quicker than the outgoing Si, which is down 40 lb-ft. Aside from the additional thrust, the Civic hybrid will get an EPA estimate of 50 mpg in combined city/highway driving, according to Honda.

Another shake-up for the new model is Honda doing away with the manual transmission in the Civic Hatchback. The Civic is now CVT-only across the board, and if you’re a fan of three pedals, the Si and the Type R are now the only models to offer a manual transmission.

What's the Civic hybrid like to drive?

In the Civic, Honda's hybrid system is smooth and torquey off the line. Honda's Linear Shift Control system mimics traditional gear changes instead of letting the engine rage against its rev limiter when you demand full power. There's more than enough pep when you need it and excellent fuel economy when you tone things back down.

Though you might associate hybrids with dynamic boredom, that's not the case here. The Civic is eager to turn in and neatly pivots into tight bends. Hybridization has in no way dulled the sharpness that we've come to know and love in the Civic. The new car is also quieter than before, especially at highway speeds, making it a more relaxing cruiser.

How’s the Civic's interior?

Honda didn’t make any major changes to the updated Civic’s interior but we’re OK with that — this was already a great cabin for a vehicle at this price point. Our current rating gives the car high marks for its attractive design and easy-to-use controls. Small tweaks for 2025 include two USB-C ports in the front and a new gray interior color option on hybrid models.

The Civic is surprisingly roomy inside, given its compact size. Taller passengers fit in the front row without issues, and the back seats can take on average-size adults. This is also a great car for overall visibility. Thin front pillars and a low-slung dash make it easy to see forward — there are also virtually no significant blind spots.

How’s the Civic's tech?

The big news here is with the top-trim Civic Sport Touring Hybrid. Honda is finally adding the excellent Google built-in software to the Civic, but only on the one model. This brings Google Maps, the Google-powered voice assistant and the ability to add third-party apps such as Spotify. The Sport Touring also gets the upgraded 9-inch touchscreen and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.

Like we’ve said with the Accord, it would be nice to see the Google technology across more trim levels since it’s such a positive addition to the car’s tech experience. Honda still includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard on the Civic, along with a smaller 7-inch touchscreen. But if you prefer the best tech that Honda has to offer, then only the Sport Touring will get the job done.

Honda is more democratic with the Civic’s safety kit, which includes a healthy number of standard features. Adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane keeping assistance come standard on the car, while blind-spot warning and parking sensors are optional extras.

A little more fine-tuning of its driver assistance systems means adaptive cruise control follows the car ahead of you more consistently and is able to find the center of the lane and hold you there. There's no ping-ponging between lane lines at all — even with torrential rain and truly abysmal visibility on my drive route outside of Montreal. The Civic's safety systems were always some of the best, but just like the rest of the car, they have only gotten better for 2025.

The Toyota Corolla has long been the obvious competitor to the Honda Civic, and it also offers regular gas and hybrid powertrain options. This is also true of the Hyundai Elantra, which packs the best fuel economy of the three. Buyers should also consider the Toyota Prius and Kia Niro for hybrid-powered hatchback alternatives.

Edmunds says

Adding a hybrid model to the Civic range was a no-brainer for Honda, considering how popular they are at the moment. Given how much we enjoy this powertrain in the Accord and CR-V hybrids, we have high expectations for the new Civic to shine bright.

The Honda Civic continues to demonstrate its prowess in the small-sedan segment. In fact, it currently ranks No. 1 in Edmunds' rankings . The 2025 Honda Civic will most likely arrive with some refinements but nothing drastic. There's plenty to like about the current-generation Civic. Available in sedan or hatchback form, it has all the appreciated interior highlights like a roomy cabin, the latest technology and driver assist features, and comfortable seats. In addition, the powertrains available are excellent, from the one in the base LX trim to the one gracing the wicked Type R. A significant addition to the popular nameplate is the return of a hybrid-powered Civic for 2025.

Edmunds spotlight: A hybrid Civic is confirmed for 2025

The Civic Hybrid was a fixture of the lineup from the early 2000s until Honda discontinued it nearly a decade ago. Now Honda has confirmed a hybrid-powered Civic will return for 2025 in sedan and hatchback forms, though details are slim. However, we expect it to have the same powertrain as the European Civic e:HEV with 180 hp. Fuel economy for combined city/highway driving should be about 50 mpg, which would be competitive with the rival Toyota Corolla Hybrid and Toyota Prius along with the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid. Check back with Edmunds for updates as we find out more.

If you're looking for something similar to the Honda Civic in other brands, then it's worth checking out Edmunds' other well-rated choices for a small sedan, including the Kia Forte, Hyundai Elantra and Mazda 3.

Honda's Fastest Models With VTEC Engine Technology

W hile Honda wasn't the first car brand to introduce variable valve timing (VVT) to the motor world, it certainly took it to another level. Honda's iconic VTEC ( Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control ) technology gleaned inspiration from Alfa Romeo's mechanical variable valve timing system, which, in hindsight, is one of the biggest discoveries of the automotive industry . The Japanese company used computers and various cam profiles to improve it and make it a much more potent solution to squeezing performance from engines with smaller displacement.

The first car in Honda's VTEC history to use VVT was the 1989 Acura Integra XSi model. It had a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with VTEC on both its exhaust and intake cams. This car somehow managed 160 hp at 7,600 rpm, which is incredible for such a small engine from the late '80s.

VTEC is so effective at boosting performance because it allows more air to get into and escape the combustion chamber when it detects that the car needs to "breathe" more at high speeds. While riding, you can even physically feel the velocity change and exhaust sounds when the car engages the VTEC, and that's the origin of the " VTEC just kicked in, yo! " meme.

Since its introduction, Honda has used this technology to create iconic sports cars. We've compiled a few of the fastest, so you know which ones top the chart.

Acura Integra Type R (Third Generation)

Some say the third-gen Honda/Integra Type R is the best FWD car of all time . Articles from car journalists worldwide have placed it on a pedestal, and it has remained there even as newer, more modern roadsters have come and gone.

This car was sold in the U.S. with the Acura Integra Type R nameplate (Honda Integra in other markets) as a performance-oriented trim option in the Integra lineup. Honda produced it from 1994 to 2001, after which the Acura Integra was renamed RSX. If you popped the hood open on one of these, you'd see what you might think was a disappointing engine by today's standards, but don't let looks fool you. The Integra Type R had a 1.8-liter DOHC VTEC four-cylinder engine that managed a magical 195 hp at 8,000 rpm.

Honda stripped out air conditioning, cruise control, sunroof, and visor mirrors and generally built the car lighter than its non-R counterparts. Its lightweight disposition, combined with the high-revving B18C5 VTEC engine, gives this FWD a 6.1-second zero-to-60 (according to Zero to 60 Times ) and a drag-limited top speed of 143 mph (according to Car and Driver ). Going by William Clavey of Jalopnik's account , the ITR's VTEC kicks in at about 5,500 rpm. But where the Integra R really shines is its handling. The limited-slip differential, sturdy steering system, improved brakes, and a host of other core tunings have also earned it a title as the best-handling front-wheel drive car ever.

Honda Civic Type R (FL5)

The Honda Civic Type R has earned a long and respected history since the "EK" Civic was upgraded for the Type R badge in 1997. However, the CTR has come a long way since then, and the new FL5 Civic Type R is pushing hot hatches into supercar territory.

For the uninitiated, the FL5 is the chassis code for the latest CTR models (2023 and 2024). While Honda's flagship FWD sports car now has an understated design, it piled more of the aggression into the engine. Said engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder DOHC VTEC engine that outputs 315 hp at 6,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque. It's tagged as "the most powerful Civic Type R ever" right there on Honda's official website.

Car and Driver 's tests indicate that the 2023 CTR can reach 60 mph from a standstill in 4.9 seconds and has an advertised top speed of 171 mph. Motor Trend's speed tests weren't as fruitful as this, though, and their runs with the 2021 CTR Limited Edition resulted in a better quarter-mile timestamp and top speed number. In a more prepared scenario, the preproduction 2023 Honda Civic Type R beat the 2021 CTR LE's track record in 2022 at the Suzuka Circuit. It also holds the record as the fastest FWD on the Nürburgring.

Honda Accord 2.0T (10th Generation)

There isn't really a "single" model called a Honda Accord 2.0T. Instead, this is an umbrella designation for all the 10th generation Honda Accords with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Even though it's kind of sad to see Honda's legendary J35 V6 engines replaced with four cylinders, these turbocharged VTEC inline-4s really carry on the torch.

The 10th-generation Accords span from the 2018 to 2022 models, and all of these years allow you to get the sedan with either 2.0-liter or 1.5-liter engines. The 2.0-liter cars have 252 hp at 6,500 rpm, 273 lb-ft of torque, a dual overhead cam (DOHC), and could be paired with a six-speed manual, 10-speed automatic, or continuous variable transmission (CVT) system. If the engine sounds familiar, that's because it's a dumbed-down version of the Civic Type R's.

All of these specs make this seemingly modest mid-size family sedan surprisingly fast. It can reach zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and beat the quarter mile in 14.1 seconds. It also has an electrically limited top speed of 126 mph, according to Car and Driver .

Honda S2000 Club Racer

Honda has perfected the art of FWD, but don't forget that it's also dipped its toe into the RWD pool — with great success. Enter the Honda S2000, a car ahead of its time, a true roadster that embodied Honda's oft-neglected history of racing and performance. This car was built to rival the Porsche Boxster, but the Boxster is nowhere close in value and cult following this car has amassed.

The engine sitting atop the S2000 was called the F20C . It was a 2.2-liter inline-4 VTEC DOHC engine rated at 237 hp at 7,800 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque at 6,800 rpm, paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Honda was quite proud of these numbers, and it stated that no other engine had more power per liter. This convertible came with a Club Racer (CR) option with wider wheels for greater tire contact patch, making for better traction, and it was lighter than the base model. Nowadays, these CR S2000s are coveted and could go as high as $70,000.

Frankly, this convertible's numbers were a little lower than the competition's at the time. But its light framework and nimble nature tagged it with a curb weight of around 2,800 lbs.  Motor Trend 's road tests prove that the S2000 can reach 60 mph from a standstill in 5.8 seconds, and it beat the quarter mile in 14.2 seconds. Better numbers than both its rivals, the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3.

Acura NSX (First Generation)

The Acura NSX is Honda's first true supercar, one that can compete shamelessly with Ferraris and Lamborghinis of a similar era. It's the inspiration for the McLaren F1, whose designer, Gordon Murray, loved the car so much that he owned one for personal use. The Acura NSX is such a rare, beloved car that it holds the position of the Holy Grail for Honda and VTEC fans.

Sales for this vehicle ran from 1990 to 2005. In 1997, Honda upgraded the displacement in the engine, taking it up from the 3.0-liter C30A engine to the 3.2-liter C32B engine. The 3.2-liter model is called NA2, and the 3.0-liter model is called NA1. For the purpose of this list, we'll focus on the NA2 model since it has more power.

According to lore, the NSX was the first production car to have an all-aluminum alloy chassis and suspension. This made the car exceptionally light. Coupled with its engine, a mid-rear mounted naturally-aspirated V6 VTEC DOHC engine that managed 290 hp at 7,100 rpm gave this RWD a 4.9-second zero-to-60 and a top speed of 175 mph (according to Car and Driver ). It also beats the quarter mile in 13.3 seconds.

Honda made multiple versions of the NSX, like the NSX-R and NSX-R GT. Some were modified and used for races. Famously, the NSX competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1994, 1995, and 1996 — and it won the GT class division in 1995.

2025 Honda Civic Type R gets an $800 price increase over the 2024

Now starts at $46,690, which is $2,700 more than on debut in late 2022.

civic type r cruise control

Honda's been tweaking the Civic lineup for the 2025 model year, a time of refreshing. The biggest update is the addition of a powerful, efficient Civic Hybrid that replaces the 180-hp, 1.5-liter turbocharged option and shares a lot with the hybrid available in the Honda Accord and CR-V . The Civic's suspension gets retuned for 2025, although the changes only result in minor improvements felt behind the wheel. Similarly, subtle updates to the Civic's exterior style are seen around the front fascia, also minor enough that shoppers may not notice. A new 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system sits atop the dash of the on top-level Sport Touring and Civic SI grades, powered by Google Built-In and offering access to apps through the Play Store.

That Si benefits from darkened taillights and new 18-inch wheels, too, along with its own retuned shocks and chassis reinforcements. The automatic rev-matching system also now works for downshifts from second to first, which could be quite appealing for autocrossers.

The 2025 Civic Type R doesn't get any of this, unchanged for the shift into the new model year save for pricing. Now $800 more than it cost in 2024, the Civic Type R starts at $46,690 after the $1,095 destination charge. Honda blamed part of the upcharge on "higher costs associated with production and logistics ... taking effect with the 2024 model year." And don't forget, you can only get black or red for that price. Blue, pearl white, and gray all add $455.

The first bit of good news is that dealer markups appear to have been washed away. A quick search of new inventory across the country turns up copious units priced at MSRP. That gets the Type R in more straightforward competition with offerings like the $46,890, all-wheel-drive 2024 Volkswagen Golf R , and the $37,635 2024 Toyota GR Corolla that's also AWD. Outliers for the fight include like the top-of-the-line $45,335 2024 Subaru WRX GT and $34,850 2024 Hyundai Elantra N . Back at Toyota , now that the 2025 GR Supra dropped its 2.0-liter four-cylinder, it's effectively out of the equation, costing more than $57,000.

The second bit of good news is that the Type R still holds its own in the segment. The more mature looks that came with the 11th-generation model haven't lapsed into ennui, and the performance still kicks. Honda set a new benchmark lap time for front-wheel-drive cars at the Nürburgring last year, a 7:44.881 that still hasn't been beat. Admittedly, Honda used a Euro-only decontented Type R S on special Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, but there's probably not a lot in it between the Civic and the Renault Megane that held the record previously, taking all the variables into account. The Type R still fights among the head of the class.
