5 Reasons Every AvGeek Should Visit the Delta Flight Museum

Darren Murph

The Delta Flight Museum has been a mainstay in any roundup of museums that AvGeeks simply have to see, but only recently has it become a destination in its own right. In fact, air conditioning was just installed throughout in 2014, which makes the visit a lot more comfortable during Georgia summers. Located right beside a runway at the world's busiest airport , Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL), the museum is a nonprofit entity dedicated to preserving the history of what we know today as Delta Air Lines.

It's a massive facility spread across two original airport hangars from the 1940s — part of the original Atlanta Municipal Airport — and I recently had a chance to explore every square inch. The long and short of it? It's a must-see, and I've rounded up five of my favorite elements below.

See Boeing's First-Ever 747-400 Like Never Before

Delta's Queen of the Skies , the Boeing 747 , had a farewell tour for the record books. TPG Editor-at-Large Zach Honig was onboard one of the 747's final journeys , and I personally flew on the very ship that is now on display as the largest and most captivating element of the entire Delta Flight Museum. N661US made its final run between Honolulu (HNL) and ATL (ATL) in September of 2015, and it shuttled me along the same airspace just days prior.

You can have a seat in the Delta One lie-flats that were left onboard, including the one at the nose ("in front of the captain") and upstairs in the upper deck.

The upper deck transforms as a viewing platform from the forward cabin back, where clear paneling has been installed to give you a true look at the inner workings of an airliner cabin.

As you walk where carpet once was, Delta has left everything in place below. The amount of precision in cabling and tubing, elements that most passengers don't even consider, is mind-blowing.

delta airlines headquarters tour

As it should, the interior of this majestic machine doubles as an event space, with clear paneling above to showcase what wraps around a cabin full of souls as a jet flies from one place to another. AvGeek wedding, anyone?

Even the lavatories are open for viewing, with a fresh bottle of soap and new rolls of toilet paper that no one will ever use. So fresh, so clean.

delta airlines headquarters tour

Ever wanted to walk out on the wing of a Boeing 747-400 and peer over ATL? Here, you can.

delta airlines headquarters tour

The interior of a Boeing 747-400 is so huge, Delta is able to stand up an entire museum in its interior.

delta airlines headquarters tour

Sections of the Main Cabin were left installed, too.

Crawling (er, walking) underneath of the Queen of the Skies gives great perspective on its sheer size.

delta airlines headquarters tour

It's one thing to see it from inside of an airport, but it's another to climb inside this gargantuan jet engine. The complexity of these mechanical wonders brings about a new appreciation for modern air travel.

Walk inside of a Boeing 767-200

delta airlines headquarters tour

It barely fits, but it fits. The airliner known as "The Spirit of Delta" is expertly restored, and you're able to walk inside and remember what it was like to fly one of Delta's best jets in the mid-2000s. The story behind the plane is remarkable, and frankly, embodies the Southern hospitality that Delta prides itself on.

delta airlines headquarters tour

Led by three Delta flight attendants in the early 1980s, an employee fundraising drive during a tough time for the aviation industry as a whole raised $30 million — enough to buy a Boeing 767-200. It flew as a point of Delta pride for over 23 years, and was retired in 2006 after flying north of 70,000 hours.

The airliner's walls were repurposed as epic museum elements, showcasing decades of flight attendant garb.

One thing that hasn't changed much since The Spirit of Delta last flew in 2006? The look and feel of the galley.

delta airlines headquarters tour

Sports fans will appreciate the collaboration elements showcasing the love from Delta to its local franchises, such as the Atlanta Braves baseball club and the Atlanta Falcons football squad.

delta airlines headquarters tour

It's insane to think how far in-flight entertainment has come. We've moved from overhead projectors (!) in 2006 to Delta Studio in 2018.

In-seat phones and projector screens. The pinnacle of flying just a few years back.

The shine on the airliner's belly is intense (and beautiful).

There's Much to Learn About how Delta Became Delta

delta airlines headquarters tour

Did you know that Delta began as a crop-dusting operation? Or that its first flight routes didn't even include Atlanta, the city it now calls home? Even if you've flown a million miles on the Delta we know today, there's almost certainly something about its past that'll be new for you.

delta airlines headquarters tour

The museum also does a fantastic job of spotlighting the people that have defined the airline. Delta's founder, C. E. Woolman, recognized that airlines could pretty easily replicate one's fleet and route network, which leaves precious little room for differentiation. He noted that "All airlines are alike; only people make them different." You'll find lots of elements such as these throughout, and it paints a realistic picture of how the company's employee network strives to differentiate today.

delta airlines headquarters tour

Every airline has days it'd prefer to forget, from IT meltdowns to sluggish restarts after a major weather event , but Delta is hinging its future success on how it treats others. A good chunk of the experience focuses on this, rather than the metal you think of by default when you see the Delta logo.

You Can Hop in a Boeing 737 Flight Simulator

delta airlines headquarters tour

It's relatively easy to hop in a flight simulator used to train actual pilots that fly actual Delta jets. You just need a few million bucks and a climate-controlled garage. If, however, that doesn't sound easy enough , there's one other way that I discovered during my tour.

delta airlines headquarters tour

Once Boeing's 737-200 was fully retired from Delta's fleet, the simulator used for pilot training on that specific aircraft was moved to the Delta Flight Museum. This is no mock-up. This is a real-deal 737 full motion flight sim that past Delta pilots have sat in and operated.

delta airlines headquarters tour

You can reserve an hourlong session for $425 , and it's worth noting that the experience can hold up to four AvGeeks at once.

It's Doable With a Long Layover at ATL

delta airlines headquarters tour

One of the remarkable aspects of the museum is its location. It's a stone's throw from ATL, enabling you to Uber or Lyft over during a layover in just a few minutes. Pricing ranges from $0 for budding pilots ages 0 to 4 to $15 for adults between 18 and 64. And yes, that sum includes access to the Boeing 747-400 sitting outside.

Delta's network of Sky Clubs within its home base in Atlanta is impressive, and the newest club at the center of the B concourse is particularly epic for plane spotting. That said, there's no better way to spend a couple of hours than soaking up mountains of AvGeek history nearby. Just keep in mind that the Delta Flight Museum is closed each Wednesday, and it keeps a running list of temporary exhibitor closures on its website – for example, the Boeing 747-400 is occasionally rented out, so you'll want to make sure it's open when you visit.

delta airlines headquarters tour

One of the more understated reasons to visit is the museum's ability to instill a deeper appreciation for aviation as a whole. It wasn't that long ago that the most advanced planes in the world were topping out at 70mph, and business class cabins were outfitted with top-of-the-line dining room chairs.

It's easy to kvetch and conclude that flying just ain't what it used to be when you're staring at a multi-hour delay due to a mechanical issue, but the truth is that air travel is a marvel. My hunch is that you'll have a little more patience, a little more understanding and a little more respect for just how miraculous flying is once you've toured this museum.

delta airlines headquarters tour

It's also a wonderful place to bring the family . There is perhaps no easier way to plant a seed of imagination, to provide a glimpse at what a career in engineering could bring, than a tour of the Delta Flight Museum. It's the kind of place that will leave an indelible mark on young, impressionable minds, which is exactly what we need to keep the industry that we love moving forward.

  • Where Is The Headquarters Of Delta Air Lines?

A Delta Air Lines passenger jet flying over Maho bay as it comes in to land at SXM Princess Juliana International Airport behind.

Delta Air Lines is a major airline in the US. This airline’s headquarter is located in Atlanta , Georgia . The airline and its subsidiary such as Delta Connection boast of 5,400 daily flights and serves over 320 destinations across 52 countries. Apart from Atlanta, Delta has other eight hubs including Salt Lake City, Boston, Los Angeles, New York (JFK), New York (LaGuardia), Minneapolis, Seattle, and Detroit. The airline is the second-largest in the world by scheduled flight passengers carried and the size of the fleet. Delta Air Line is one of the founding members of the SkyTeam airline alliance.

Origin Of The Airline

Delta’s journey to a global airline started in the 1920s when the aviation and agricultural efforts came together to try and find a solution to the boll weevil infestation which was a major threat to cotton crops at the time. A team of researchers mainly drawn from the US Department of Agriculture and led by B R Coad loaned aircraft and pilots from the Army and improved them for aerial crop dusting operation known as Huff Daland Duster Inc. The company was established in March 1925 in Macon Georgia, becoming the world’s first aerial crop dusting company. In the summer of the same year, the company was relocated to Monroe, Louisiana . In 1928, a group of investors led by C. E Woolman acquired the Huff Daland Duster assets and established a new company known as Delta Air Service (named after the Delta Region). The new airline was incorporated in December 1928 and was headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana. It began passenger operations in June 1929 and expanded its route eastwards to Atlanta in 1930.

Change Of Headquarters To Atlanta

In October 1930 Delta Air Service was forced to terminate its services after the “Spoil Conference” in which the airmail contract for the routes pioneered by the company was awarded to a rival airline. It suspended its passenger services and sold its assets to the competitor. C. E. Woolman, Travis Oliver (a local banker), and other local investors repurchased Delta Air Service’s crop dusting assets and named the new company Delta Air Corporation. In 1934, the company secured a mail contract and begun operating as Delta Air Lines. In 1941, Delta Airline moved its headquarter from Monroe to Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta is currently the airline’s headquarters with no plans of relocating to another city or state.

Inside Delta’s Headquarters

Delta’s headquarters in Atlanta is as busy as any company’s headquarters with several activities going on to ensure successful company operations. The Operations and Customer Center houses a team of specialists including meteorologists who monitor flights and decides when a flight is to be canceled due to poor weather. Also, teams from various departments share updates and discuss anything and everything that could disrupt operations including world news, spare airplanes available, staffing, and weather. The CEO is always on standby to offer guidance and direction to the team. Other Delta’s facilities in Atlanta include Sky Club and TechOps. The company has a fleet of 914 aircraft, manufactured by Boeing, Airbus, and McDonnell Douglas.

Atlanta Airport Criticized for ‘Tone Deaf’ Condolence Message After Delta Workers Killed

Gordon Smith

Gordon Smith , Skift

August 28th, 2024 at 11:25 AM EDT

The social media misstep by the world's busiest airport is a reminder of the challenges faced by brands big and small when communicating online. Could greater oversight of the offending post and its subsequent fallout have minimized the impact?

Gordon Smith

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport is facing sharp criticism for its social media response to a deadly accident.

On Tuesday, two Delta Air Lines staff were killed and another seriously injured after a tire explosion at a maintenance hangar near the airport. The Associated Press reports that the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an investigation.

Posting on its official X account in the hours following the accident, a message from the airport read: “Our prayers are with the families affected by the tragic incident at Delta Air Lines’ Technical Operations Maintenance Facility this morning. We send condolences to our partners as they continue to ‘Keep Climbing’ during this difficult time.”

“Our prayers are with the families affected by the tragic incident at Delta Air Lines’ Technical Operations Maintenance Facility this morning. We send condolences to our partners as they continue to ‘Keep Climbing’ during this difficult time.”

The use of Delta’s ‘Keep Climbing’ corporate slogan within the airport’s condolence message was met with disbelief and accusations of poor taste by many social media users.

Atlanta is home to Delta’s company headquarters and is its largest base. There is no indication that Delta was involved in the publication of the airport’s message.

As of 11am ET on Wednesday, the X post received more than 130 comments, with the vast majority disapproving of the content.

A Huge Spike in Views

The post – which was deleted from Atlanta Airport’s feed around 11:30am ET on Wednesday – was viewed more than 500,000 times. For context, a typical X post from the airport receives between four and six thousand views.

Even messages shared during periods of severe disruption typically receive views in the tens of thousands. For example, a post published during the peak of Delta’s CrowdStrike meltdown in July has been seen 51,000 times – just a tenth of Tuesday’s original post.

“Could ya keep the corporate sloganeering out of the condolence message?” read one response, while another asked “Think if McDonald’s released a statement about employee deaths and said ‘I’m loving it.’ That’s what you did, Atlanta Airport. WTF?”

Ain't no way you just used a pun in a post about two of your employees dying — Jorge (@Jorgemycete) August 28, 2024

A further user queried if AI could have offered a more fitting response to the tragedy: “I’m sorry but it is highly inappropriate to put a slogan right next to the condolence message. If you’re this lazy, at least a ChatGPT check would have saved you.”

This is a horrible post. You should be ashamed. Two men went to work this morning and won't be returning home to their families. To use this slogan in the way you did is horrific. Shame on you. — Jack Moers (@Jack_Moers) August 27, 2024

For its part, Delta shared a short statement on Tuesday following the accident: “The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility. We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

How Have Atlanta Airport and Delta Responded?

An updated X post has been published by the airport, removing the reference to Delta’s slogan.

In a statement to Skift , Elise Durham, the airport’s assistant general manager, Marketing and Communications said the original post was “an effort to convey sympathy; while also noting the obvious resilience it will take for the Delta Air Lines team to come back from a tragic accident such as this.”

Durham described the use of the Delta slogan as a mistake, acknowledging that the reference was “offensive to some.”

“We view ourselves as one team at the busiest airport in the world, and I am sure our partners understood the sentiment. However, I missed the mark on this one and take full responsibility,” she added.

A Delta Air Lines spokesperson told Skift : “Sometimes during a crisis it’s difficult to find the perfect words, and while acknowledgement is important, actions are even more important. Huge thanks to our friends at ATL [Atlanta Airport] for their rapid response during our employees’ critical time of need.”

This story has been updated to reflect that the original X post has been removed.

  • Airline History: Why Delta Air Lines HQ was in Monroe, Louisiana until 1941

Cotton and the birth of Delta Air Lines

Delta Air Lines grew out of a crop dusting service from the 1920s. Cotton as an agricultural crop is central to the story of the birth of Delta Air Lines, the world’s largest airline in 2016.

Louisiana was a major cotton growing region of the South from the early 1800s up until recent decades. The state now ranks about 12th in the USA for cotton and is not even in the top 10. Texas, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama are the largest cotton producing states. In the 1890s, the boll weevil insect pest came from Mexico and began ravaging cotton fields through the south as it migrated across the cotton belt. The destruction of cotton crops from the 1910s to 1920s reduced production by nearly half across the southern United States. At the time nearly 2/3 of all African-American tenant farmers/sharecroppers were employed in cotton production and harvesting.

In 1924 Collett E. Woolman and B.R. Coad of the U.S. Department of Agriculture worked in Louisiana researching chemical solutions to eradicate boll weevil infestation of cotton crops. Their research indicated “dusting†cotton fields with a pesticide was the most effective way to eradicate the boll weevil. They established the world’s first aviation “crop-dusting†aviation company in Macon, Georgia in 1924.

Joseph and Malcolm Biedenharn and the Monroe Connection to Delta Air Lines

Seeking to expand the company with more aircraft brought in several investors in 1925, including Joseph Biedenharn and his son Malcolm of Monroe, Louisiana. Joseph Biedenharn was the initial bottler of Coca-Cola in 1894 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Coca-Cola had only been a soda fountain drink from its creation in 1886 up to that point.

Biedenharn Coke Museum Monroe

Delta Air Lines annual stockholder’s meeting was held in Monroe, Louisiana every year from 1957 to 1997, with the exception of 1995 when it was in Atlanta prior to Olympics.  In 1998 the meeting moved to New York City .

Interesting. I guess I thought Delta was from the math type of delta, like change.

Excuse me. I thought that slavery ended at the end of the Civil War. Delta Air Lines did not start until the 1930’s. Ladida, you are delusional.

Delta Air Lines is adding two routes to its network that it hasn’t served in more than a decade. The airline will connect both Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) with Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA), which is in Bentonville, AR where Walmart’s corporate headquarters are located.

The daily flights will be operated by Delta Connection partners Endeavor Air and SkyWest Airlines. Endeavor Air will fly a  Bombardier CRJ-900 with 12 First Class, 20 Comfort+. and 44 Main Cabin seats between Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) (this begins on November 11th). SkyWest will operate the route with Embraer 175 aircraft that offer 12 First Class, 20 Comfort+. and 38 Main Cabin seats between Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) (this begins on February 13th).

Walmart Corporate Headquarters

Delta currently serves Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) from three of its hubs, including:

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP)
  • New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA)

These routes have not been flown since 2014 and 2015, respectively. They cater to business travelers, so Delta must being seeing some uptick.

Anthony’s Take: If you’ve got business to attend to with Walmart, Delta is making it easier for passengers to fly nonstop or with one connection from many cities across the United States.
