Journey Fellows

Number of weeks until the next youth worker symposium on the sea, journey professionals with a cyc credential, organizations served by the journey, award-winning fellowship programs….

Since 2002, The Journey has hosted professional development programs designed to help aspiring students and practicing professionals begin and renew their careers in youth development. These core fellowships, along with The International Youth Worker Exchange, The Leadership Symposium on the Sea, and numerous other initiatives have created a larger Journey community of youth development leaders who are influencing the possibilities for young people in Indiana and beyond.

…For Students and Explorers

The Journey Fellowship for Explorers in Youth Work provides a unique opportunity for students, part-time youth workers and volunteers to explore full-time careers working with youth while becoming more grounded and confident in who they are. Explorers have job shadowed professionals, explored the competencies of effective youth work and completed internships that enabled them to explore vocational possibilities for themselves in the field. The Journey Scholars Program recognizes distinguished students in youth development and support them in their first year of employment. Currently, The Journey is partnering with Indiana University Northwest School of Social Work, The Indiana University School of Public Health and Butler University to support junior year students in their career exploration and graduating seniors as they seek to transition into the field as working professionals.

…For Executives

The Executive Journey Fellowship is a year-long program for youth-serving professionals of influence. Each year up to 30 leading youth workers are nominated and selected to create a learning community and attend four in-state retreats to invest in their own personal growth and professional development. The intention is to help transform the profession and field of youth work by grounding leaders in who they are, building a professional community, and inspiring the beliefs of those who dream and do on behalf of young people.

The Journey Fellowship for Professionals in Youth Work allows early to mid-career youth workers an opportunity to join with an energized group of peers in order to ground themselves in who they are and their important work. These leaders explore what it takes to bring the best of themselves to the profession and the young people they serve.

Reality - how things stand

Youth is a time for fundamental decisions and the beginning of fulfilling our dreams. And yet, young people today face enormous challenges: the uncertainty of relationship in a digital era, diminishing opportunities for work, the growth of political violence, discrimination, degradation of the environment. All of this makes it difficult for them to find a road where they can build supportive personal and family relations based on solid spiritual and financial foundations.

God's Dream

Meeting Jesus, young people can find the path to deepest fulfilment. “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full”. (John 10:10) The 2018 Synod on Youth and Vocational discernment recognizes the importance of the perspectives of the young. We stand at their side. We glimpse the future with them. We walk with them in order to perceive and discern where the Spirit is leading our world and our Church.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. (…) Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:16.20-21 (NIV)

Our Response

Young people have so many possibilities in this digital age which unites them as never before. We want to walk with them, discerning these possibilities and finding God in the depths of reality. Accompanying young people puts us on the path of conversion; it requires a new way of living in Jesuit community, a way that is more coherent, more personal, more open, more evangelical.

We want our apostolic works and houses to be spaces open to youthful creativity in which the encounter with the God of life, revealed by Jesus and the deepening of the Christian faith are fostered.

We commit to promoting a healthy and safe environment for children and young people so that they can develop their full potential as human beings.

We want to help young people to know Jesus Christ and to feel themselves loved, saved and forgiven .

We ask our schools, our universities and those who work in parishes to help in the faith development of young people and creatively adapt the Spiritual Exercises so that young people can personally know Jesus in ever deeper ways and follow Him more closely.

The 2018 Synod on Youth spoke of the contribution of young people:

“through them the voice of a whole generation was heard loud and clear at the Synod. Journeying with them as pilgrims to the tomb of Peter, we experienced how coming together in this way creates the conditions for the Church to become a space for dialogue and a witness to a life-giving fraternity. The strength of this experience overcomes all weariness and weakness. The Lord continues to say to us again and again: Do not be afraid, I am with you”

A Prayer for Young People Today

Shine your truth into our hearts. May we hear you in music, see you in art and experience you through the love and care of family, friends and teachers. Build your hope into our lives. May we sense this hope rise in our hearts as we encounter the power of nature, the majesty of the oceans and the beauty in creation. Come sow your wisdom into our minds. May we discover wisdom as we read their bibles, discuss deeper issues of life or encounter hardships or difficulties. Come weave your love into our dreams. May we find vision in our interests, opportunities for our talents and aspirations for our abilities. May we know you more and more. Amen.

Prayer for Students

Father, as I study away from home - I am not alone You are my friend - help me to meet new people You are my encourager - come build my confidence and vision You are my teacher - help me to learn and gain wisdom You are my comforter - hold me when I’m lonely or afraid You are my counsellor - I share my excitement and worries with you You are my protector - I lay my life into your safe hands Thank you for your presence with me now Amen.

Father, Be with me as I take this exam. Keep my mind alert and my memory sharp. Calm my nerves and help me concentrate. I know that you walk with me, Guiding my path and inspiring my heart. I pray that I would feel you with me, And that your friendship would soften the pressure I feel. I pray that I would pass this exam and go on to new things with you. The journey of young change-makers, generation unlimited’s youth challenge winners share their year-long journeys of innovating to change lives.

What if we gave young people the chance to lead through innovation?

In September 2018, more than 800 young innovators from 16 countries around the world joined the Generation Unlimited Youth Challenge to work on solutions that ensure every young person can access the education, skills, and empowerment they need for a better future. After all, they are the experts in their own lives, experiences, contexts, and goals.

The Challenge was crafted to inspire young people with brilliant ideas and to encourage them to bring these to life, even if their circumstances offer them no resources to do so. Especially young refugees, who face daily ethnic, gender, or disability-related discrimination, and those disadvantaged by poverty, were engaged with, eager to make a difference.

From Vietnam to Nicaragua, national workshops were conducted where young innovators collaborated to design creative new solutions for education, skills, empowerment, and pathways to work. The brightest ideas were then reviewed by an international and diverse panel of judges, who selected five global winners. These inspiring teams received mentoring and seed funding to take their ideas to the next level and scale for meaningful impact in their communities.

Here’s what some of them have been working on and achieving throughout the year:

Fantastic Four: From detention to decent work in Thailand

Chonlachat (Mac), Pichitchai (Oat), Phanuwat (Ball), and Akarapol (Mee)

Despite having been in juvenile detention, the Fantastic Four have been determined to move on and engage with, produce and contribute to society. “There are millions of young people like us around the world who are repeat offenders because society does not accept us nor trust us,” they say.

Their winning idea was to build a website that enables these young people with unique circumstances to access employment opportunities. They quickly gained support from the Thai government, resulting in hundreds of businesses willing to offer work.

Since then, over 10 major media outlets covered their story and their winning solution, including a nationwide programme called “King’s Philosophy” (video in Thai) . However, they have been continuing their mission by gathering input and insights from more young people and repeatedly testing their solution.

Their hard work and determination led to a presentation at the Social Expo Thailand 2019 and their recognition as a best practice by the Ministry of Justice — the boys were then invited to meet the Minister.

They are now excited to continue building their website for young ex-offenders, this time with the supervision of the Innovation Section of the Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection, under the Ministry of Justice. Their goal is to reach 280 young men and women by piloting the solution in 6 training centers.

AndroMeta: Speaking out against bullying in North Macedonia

Joined by the ambition to achieve change in their community, these 5 young people met by chance and ended up winning the Youth Challenge with their idea of crafting an application called SpeakOut. More than a forum where young people can connect to offer and obtain peer-to-peer support, the app can also link them with trained volunteers and professionals.

The first obstacle they met was how to actually build this app; through sheer determination and perseverance, they are now on their way to release a working app by the end of 2019. They’ve incorporated features such as authentication functions, and live chats on top of the forums, and have done great strides in design work as well.

The team has been continuously testing to understand how users will utilize the app, and these important opinions will help them on their way to build their ground-up, final version of SpeakOut.

From here, they will seek support from the Ministry of Labour on social policies to form groups of volunteers and find psychologists to help them talk to peers, and establish a user journey on how to best serve specific people’s needs — from events, to forums, live chats, and even personal meetings with psychologists — all to help them SpeakOut.

Team Amigo: Bringing Education to remote corners of Zimbabwe

This group of young men are friends from university, joined and fueled by a passion to improve access to textbooks and other learning materials for disadvantaged children, even in remote areas. Currently, learning materials are often unavailable or too expensive, and their solution to build a web and mobile application that delivers learning materials to students at low cost secured them funding and support at the Youth Challenge.

They struggled as they had to balance their schoolwork and preparing for exams and dissertations, but the friends stuck together through patience and smart delegating based on their passions and their shared vision to provide students with easily accessible, affordable educational materials.

They also have the desire to incorporate special tools for young people with disabilities, such as vision and hearing, into the application. Thanks to the support of Generation Unlimited, they were able to immerse in entrepreneurship skills and networking, empowering them to conduct monthly pitches to find entrepreneurs to offer them a new perspective and help them further develop the idea.

Since winning the Youth Challenge, they have also now formally registered as a company, and have been improving their technologies. They also have onboarded over 13,000 users who have access to 2 million textbooks and over 150,000 old exam papers. They also incorporated a WhatsApp option for those who don’t own a computer.

Brought together by passion, they hope to include some payment scheme for the business to become sustainable - so they can also employ and enable more young people, and continue improving their service so education can reach the farthest.

The Myth of Ponce de León and the Fountain of Youth

Tales of sacred, restorative waters existed well before the birth of Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León around 1474. Alexander the Great , for example, was said to have come across a healing “river of paradise” in the fourth century B.C., and similar legends cropped up in such disparate locations as the Canary Islands, Japan, Polynesia and England. During the Middle Ages, some Europeans even believed in the mythical king Prester John, whose kingdom allegedly contained a fountain of youth and a river of gold. “You could trace that up until today,” said Ryan K. Smith, a history professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. “People are still touting miracle cures and miracle waters.”

Spanish sources asserted that the Taino Indians of the Caribbean also spoke of a magic fountain and rejuvenating river that existed somewhere north of Cuba. These rumors conceivably reached the ears of Ponce de León, who is thought to have accompanied Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World in 1493. After helping to brutally crush a Taino rebellion on Hispaniola in 1504, Ponce de León was granted a provincial governorship and hundreds of acres of land, where he used forced Indian labor to raise crops and livestock. In 1508 he received royal permission to colonize San Juan Bautista (now Puerto Rico). He became the island’s first governor a year later, but was soon pushed out in a power struggle with Christopher Columbus’ son Diego.

Having remained in the good graces of King Ferdinand, Ponce de León received a contract in 1512 to explore and settle an island called Bimini. Nowhere in either this contract or a follow-up contract was the Fountain of Youth mentioned. By contrast, specific instructions were given for subjugating the Indians and divvying up any gold found. Although he may have claimed to know certain “secrets,” Ponce de León likewise never brought up the fountain in his known correspondence with Ferdinand.

“What Ponce is really looking for is islands that will become part of what he hopes will be a profitable new governorship,” said J. Michael Francis, a history professor at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. “From everything I can gather, he was not at all interested or believed that he would find some kind of miraculous spring or lake or body of water.” At least one historian suggests that perhaps Ferdinand, who had recently married a woman 35 years his junior, told Ponce de León to keep his eye out for it. But other experts dispute this.

Either way, Ponce de León set sail in March 1513 with three ships. According to early historians, he anchored off the eastern coast of Florida on April 2 and came ashore a day later, choosing the name “La Florida” in part because it was the Easter season (Pascua Florida in Spanish). Ponce de León then journeyed down through the Florida Keys and up the western coast, where he skirmished with Indians, before beginning a roundabout journey back to Puerto Rico. Along the way he purportedly discovered the Gulf Stream, which proved to be the fastest route for sailing back to Europe.

Eight years later, Ponce de León returned to Florida’s southwestern coast in an attempt to establish a colony, but he was mortally wounded by an Indian arrow. Just before leaving, he sent letters to his new king, Charles V, and to the future Pope Adrian VI. Once again, the explorer made no mention of the Fountain of Youth, focusing instead on his desire to settle the land, spread Christianity and discover whether Florida was an island or peninsula. No log of either voyage has survived, and no archaeological footprint has ever been uncovered.

Nonetheless, historians began linking Ponce de León with the Fountain of Youth not long after his death. In 1535 Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés accused Ponce de León of seeking the fountain in order to cure his sexual impotence. “He was being discredited [as] an idiot and weakling,” Smith explained. “This is machismo culture in Spain at the height of the Counter-Reformation.” The accusation is almost certainly untrue, Smith added, since Ponce de León fathered several children and was under 40 years old at the time of his first expedition.

Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda, who lived with Indians in Florida for many years after surviving a shipwreck, also derided Ponce de León in his 1575 memoir, saying it was a cause for merriment that he sought out the Fountain of Youth. One of the next authors to weigh in was Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas, the Spanish king’s chief historian of the Indies. In 1601 he penned a detailed and widely read account of Ponce de León’s first voyage. Although Herrera only referred to the Fountain of Youth in passing, writing that it turned “old men to boys,” he helped solidify it in the public’s imagination. “They are really more entertainment than attempts to write a true history,” Francis said of these works.

The Fountain of Youth legend was now alive and well. It did not gain much traction in the United States, however, until the Spanish ceded Florida in 1819. Famous writers of the time such as Washington Irving then began portraying Ponce de León as hapless and vain. Artists also got in on the act, including Thomas Moran, who painted an oversize canvas of Ponce de León meeting with Indians. By the early 20th century, a statue of the explorer had been placed in the central plaza of Florida’s oldest city, St. Augustine, and a nearby tourist attraction pretended to be the actual Fountain of Youth. To this day, tens of thousands of visitors come every year to sample the sulfur-smelling well water. “It does not taste good,” said Smith, who worked there for four days in college. “Imagine what you would think the Fountain of Youth would taste like. It doesn’t taste like that.” Meanwhile, some grade school textbooks continue to present Ponce de León’s search for the fountain as historical fact.

In 2013, Ponce de León was back in the spotlight. In celebration of the 500th anniversary of his landing, reenactments took place in St. Augustine and Melbourne Beach, Florida, both of which claim to be the site where he first dropped anchor. There was also a Catholic mass in St. Augustine featuring a replica of the 15th-century font used to baptize him in Spain and a mass in Melbourne Beach, along with the unveiling of more statues and a commemorative stamp.

What would Ponce de León make of all this attention, not all of it positive? “My take on that is that no publicity is bad publicity,” Smith said. “He’s a household name, and maybe in the end that’s what he was looking for.”

Any discussion on youth identity would have its focus on identity formation during the adolescent years. Adolescence is universally considered a transitional stage of physical and psychological development that commonly occurs during the period of one's puberty from to lawful adulthood. Adolescence is thus usually associated with the teenage years, however its physical, psychological, spiritual or cultural expressions very often begin earlier and could end later. This identity formation has always been closely linked to the developmental theories used in the various disciplines of the social sciences. While it remains important to collaborate with the social sciences as dialogue partners as part of the interdisciplinary nature of practical theology, practical theology has unfortunately become subservient to the social sciences in this regard. The social sciences argue that identity is about formation through various tasks and phases resulting in the individuation of the person. The journey of youth identity, however, is primarily a theological journey seeking answers to existential questions, 'Who am I?', 'Whose am I?' and 'What is my purpose?' In practical theology, adolescence is viewed as a journey where identity should be a discovery and not a formation as youth identity is found in the person of Jesus Christ. This article, through the theory and methodology of James E. Loder, attempts to address the theological significance of already having an identity in Jesus Christ and it argues that the adolescent journey is not a process of forming an identity, but rather a journey of discovering that identity.

A Christian Youth is someone between God and his community. God made you a youth of this generation to accomplish a purpose; therefore, you have a divine destiny. This book is for all Christians to know his or her important place in this evil world. Although, this world is polluted with atrocities, violence, and all forms of immorality, yet a Christian has a place in it and we must know our position in order to fulfill the purpose of being created in the image of God of being called out of this world.

The purpose of this study is to discover how spiritual formation in Bocaue transforms the lives of the youth and how it strengthens their faith in God. Anchored in this study are John Fisher’s Four Domains of Spirituality, Health, and Well-Being and Soren Kierkegaard’s Three Stages of Life. The study was qualitative-phenomenological research with semi-structured interviews and purposive sampling. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and significant statements were chosen. These were categorized into theme clusters in order to get the emergent themes. The emergent themes reflected in the interviews were: Assimilation of Spiritual Formation, Justification of Spiritual Engagement, Before-and-After of Spiritual Engagement, and the Experiences in the Youth Ministry. The significant statements were carefully analyzed and categorized into themes. How does theology take shape in the lives of young people? This is an interesting and challenging topic. Over the last few years, this has been discussed on two levels and in different theological disciplines - on one hand within the context of a theology of young people and on the other hand in empirical studies. This paper will combine these levels together and by doing so, lend an insight into the current status of research. Therefore, this investigation focuses on the question of how theology is displayed in the lives of young people as defined by themselves, and is structured as follows: (1) A theoretical framework is set by an introduction into youth theology considered as a subjective setting for young people's faith. (2) A description of the empirical survey of the study “Spirituality of Young People“ and a commentary on the most important results. (3) Finally, a discussion on the position of the results within a wider context of mission research and the results' significance for youth theology.

This text celebrating the life and work of the most prolific contemporary Czech religious education scholar Ludmila Muchová summarises the origin and development of the emerging concept of youth theology established within the field of religious education. Even though youth theology is becoming a broad theological trend today, the focus here is on the context of the German religious education 'school' where youth theology has received perhaps its clearest contours so far and inspires contemporary authors both within and outside Germany to follow up, engage with, and develop the concept of youth theology further. One of these authors is clearly the professor of religious education, of Belgian origin but working in Bonn (Germany), Bert Roebben. The second part of this text presents his 'theology of embrace' which is closely related to the youth theology movement in Europe.

Youth has always played a crucial role in bringing changes to the society . But no one has ever tried to understand their mindset. Being a part of Gen Z , I believe that I have accurately written down the real life experience and challenges of youth nowadays.

Unstoppable Youth

Youth is the pollen that blows through the sky, and does not ask why Stephen Vincent Benet

This famous quote by Stephen Vincent Benet is quite enough to describe the mentality of this new generation. Youth is unstoppable and flows with the time , enjoying each aspect of life and not questioning where life is taking them.

Just like pollens flow in the sky and land on the ground to develop into a plant, the youth moves on the track of life not knowing where the path is growing, but carrying a single dream to rest in the shade of the tree of growth and self-satisfaction, standing at the end of the path.

Saying Yes or No?

The youth is naturally characterized by the traits which portray them as the individuals filled with loads of energy, dreams, positive attitude and the aspiration to bring a change to this world. But here the question arises, can you see this psychology in today’s generation and the passion to accomplish them? It is heart-breaking to say that the answer is ‘No’. Many of you will surely doubt this ‘No’ but somehow it is becoming true with each passing day.

Mental Health

It is not reasonable to raise the concern over the changing attitude of the youth and hold them guilty for the same. This is because the youth is still on that path of achieving their dreams and contributing towards society, but nowadays that path is filled with lots of obstacles that generate immense pressure on their mental health to take the shortcuts and divert from their actual goals.

The Social Burden

Another problem which is common among the youth these days is that they got worried and start feeling burdened by the achievements of others , even though they may not be jealous. They wonder why they are not in the same shoes as the other person is. They develop the thinking that they are facing severe competition from others and are unable to attain the same success.

This may be due to: a) The social burden b) Family’s pressure or c) Loss of strength to face them

Overcoming Challenges

The initial two factors can be avoided by the strong mentality but the third one is the most disastrous for the future of the youth. The third factor is like a termite, which makes the person hollow from deep inside and excavates all the potential to fight the challenges . The only solution to get rid of it is to believe in your abilities and not underestimate them at any point.

A person belonging to a low-income family, facing great troubles and with lack of facilities, can also become the world’s highest-paid CEO, and this is only because of his determination and the dedication to do something huge in life. That person is Alphabet and Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai .

The Successful Youth

So, challenges and successes are the two faces of the same coin, called life. If you toss the coin, you don’t know what you will get. Similarly, when the coin of life is tossed, no one knows what he/she will get. If it is a challenge, then face it and achieve the success. And if it is a success, don’t stop and continue to work hard, because you never know when the next challenge is waiting for you!

Introduction

You know that feeling you get when someone important unexpectedly calls you by your name? You find yourself thinking, wondering, even being amazed that the person who called your name knows who you are! I'm not speaking of that girl or guy you've been crushing on since school started. I'm talking about something bigger and more powerful than that "special crush" who may have noticed you. I'm talking about the God of all creation! A moment when the all-powerful, all-loving, all-forgiving, almighty God calls you by name? Imagine both joy and fear, maybe even "jear" — joy with just enough fear to remind you to treat the moment with such respect so as to not mess it up! This is what Mary may have felt during what we refer to in big, fancy, church language as the "Annunciation." God called Mary by name. Wow!

Read the following paraphrase of Luke 1:26-38 from THE MESSAGE:

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the Galilean village of Nazareth to a virgin engaged to be married to a man descended from David. His name was Joseph, and the virgin's name, Mary. Upon entering, Gabriel greeted her:

Good morning!

You're beautiful with God's beauty,

Beautiful inside and out!

God be with you.

She was thoroughly shaken, wondering what was behind a greeting like that. But the angel assured her, "Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a surprise for you: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus.

He will be great, be called 'Son of the Highest.' The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David; He will rule Jacob's house forever — no end, ever, to his kingdom."

Mary said to the angel, "But how? I've never slept with a man."

The angel answered,

The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you; Therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God.

"And did you know that your cousin Elizabeth conceived a son, old as she is? Everyone called her barren, and here she is six months' pregnant! Nothing, you see, is impossible with God."

And Mary said,

Yes, I see it all now: I'm the Lord's maid, ready to serve. Let it be with me just as you say.

Then the angel left her.

Let's begin by remembering why God created us in the first place: God is love. We know this from Jesus' life, teachings, sacrificial death, and resurrection. Also, there are many stories in Scripture where we see God's deep love for us shine through. Since God is love, it makes sense that God would desire to give away that love or to be in loving relationship with others. God created us to be in relationship with God and to share that loving, meaningful, powerful relationship with all people. As our relationship with God grows, we begin to understand more and more the hopes and dreams of God!

Scripture tells us that, when Mary first heard God's call, she was understandably shaken. To have the Creator of the universe call her by name, then tell her she was "beautiful with God's beauty," reminded Mary that she had been created in the very image of God. Then to be told she would become pregnant by the power of God's Spirit and that the child would be called Holy, the Son of God — well, you might imagine that she felt the full force of God's power — both joy and fear.

Then Mary does something remarkable. She responds with humility in service to God!

Testimony: Kaitlyn's Story

Recently I talked with Kaitlyn, who is sixteen years old and has felt God's call to be a youth pastor, and asked her a few questions.

Jason: Explain for me the moment at which you felt God's call to be in ministry.

Kaitlyn: The moment I heard God's call I was sitting and reading the Bible. While I was reading, I was asking God for some guidance, because I felt I needed something to push me. Paul [in 1 Corinthians 12:1-11] says some are called to be pastors, some teachers, and so on. I immediately felt God was calling me personally into ministry. It's like it was something I was meant for and the words in the Scriptures were speaking directly to me. I felt my life was going in the direction of becoming a youth pastor. I began to notice certain people and resources that seemed to be sent by God to help me!

Jason: Wow, what a moment! Had you had any feelings about ministry before that?

Kaitlyn: Yes. I felt it when my confirmation small group all pointed at me when Adam [Senior Pastor of Church of the Resurrection, where Kaitlyn attends and where I serve on staff, and author of The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem ] asked who in the group should become a pastor. My class pointed at me, and I was scared and excited!

Jason: When did you first feel that you understood who God is?

Kaitlyn: At vacation Bible school when I was a kid. I remember learning that God is good and God created us. Then later in fifth grade, while at basketball camp at my church, I gave my heart to God.

Jason: Have you ever doubted that you "have what it takes" to be in ministry?

Kaitlyn: Yes, but then I remember stories about Mary and others in which God called regular people, even people who had no education or had made major mistakes in the past. Then I think I can do it with God's help. God will make me strong for God's call!

I listened to Kaitlyn talk about her calling, and I learned what Mary may have felt that day. How important it would have been for Mary to completely trust God through her call and resolve to remain strong even when she felt doubt.

Bringing the Scripture to My Life

Have you ever felt God calling you, whether to ministry or to a specific task, in your day-to-day life?

How does God speak to people today?

How does knowing that God is love shape your understanding of what love is meant to be? How can we love God and others as Jesus commanded us?

How have we (meaning people in general) misrepresented what love is meant to be?

Read "Kaitlyn's Story." How can you relate to her experience of receiving God's call?

How have you heard God's call? Has anyone ever told you that you may have a calling to serve God in a specific way? Have you prayed to God about what God may be calling you to do? Did you receive an answer? If so, what did you hear?

Taste and See (Optional)

In the Jewish world during the late first century B.C., where Mary lived, the women often started their day by making bread. They began by grinding grain, and they crushed the grain between stones in small, hand-operated mills to make flour.

Grinding grain, using the tools that were available in Mary's day, is no easy task. Give it a try.

* Leaders: Set up a grinding stone: Place a stack of newspapers on the floor. On top of this stack of newspapers, place a flat rock or wooden cutting board. Sprinkle millet seed, barley kernels, or wheat kernels on the cutting board or flat rock.

Participants should take turns using a round rock to smash the seeds or kernels on the flat rock or board. Smashing the seeds or kernels will produce flour that can be used to make bread.

After grinding the grain to make flour, things got a little easier. The women would add water and yeast to the flour to make dough. They would knead the dough for about an hour and then make the dough into thin, flat loaves about the size of a dinner plate.

* Leaders: Give each participant a ball of biscuit dough and some waxed paper. Tell them to put some flour on their hands, then invite them to knead the dough into a thin, round disk. When finished, place the flattened disks on a baking tray. Bake them according to the instructions on the package and serve them as a snack after baking.

Key Insights

Sepphoris, near Mary's hometown of Nazareth, was a city of thousands that had existed for hundreds of years and was a hub of Hebrew and Greek culture. The people of the village of Nazareth were poor when compared to their neighbors in Sepphoris. Many of them likely traveled to Sepphoris to work and shop, but they lived a much different lifestyle from those they encountered in the big city. People settled in Nazareth because it was home to a water source: a spring that provided the village "living water."

Nazareth's name likely comes from the Hebrew word for "branch" or "shoot." Several centuries earlier Isaiah used the image of a branch or shoot to talk about a ruler who would bring justice and righteousness. Adam Hamilton reads from a passage in Isaiah that talks about a shoot "from the stump of Jesse." Jesse was David's father. The person about whom Isaiah wrote would be a descendent of David, Israel's greatest king.

The people in Nazareth were peasants who were looked down on by their wealthier neighbors. We see evidence of this in John 1:46, where Nathaniel says, "Can anything from Nazareth be good?" God chose a village peasant girl who was considered insignificant by most to be the mother of the Messiah.

What do we learn from this story about the character of God?

What does this story teach us about Mary, and through Mary, about God's will for our lives?

What does this story teach us about the child to be born to Mary?

Experience Life in Community

* Leaders: Gather the participants in teams of two or three.

Work with your team to write and present a commercial to promote answering God's call. Think about the qualities and characteristics of someone who answers God's call. Be humorous and creative.

* Leaders: Invite each team to perform its commercials. Then discuss the following questions.

What do these commercials teach us about how God calls us and how we should respond?

What type of people do we expect God to call?

What do we know from Scripture (and from our personal experience) about the type of people God calls?

Making It Personal

Often there are two reasons why people don't respond to a call from God:

1. They believe that God isn't truly speaking to them.

2. They believe that they aren't worthy of God's call.

However, time and time again, God has called unlikely people — people whom others surely considered unworthy, even ordinary. Moses was a fugitive who had committed murder; Rahab was a prostitute; Paul had hunted down and persecuted Christians; Mary was young and unmarried. Any of these people could have argued that he or she was unworthy (and Moses actually did). But God had other ideas.

What reasons have you given God for not responding to God's call? In the space below, list excuses you have given (or could imagine yourself giving) for not responding to God's call. Then mark through each one, as a symbol of eliminating the excuse and releasing you to fulfill God's dreams!

Closing: Listening for God

Gather in a circle for a "jear" (joy + fear) prayer. Your leader will begin the time of prayer, thanking God for the opportunity to come together and reflect on God's call. Allow anyone who feels led to say words that describe his or her fears about being called by God. After an appropriate amount of time, anyone who feels led may also say words that describe the joys of being called by God. A leader will close the prayer, perhaps using the following words:

Lord, we all have fears and we all dream of new joys. May we be content and trusting, just as Mary was before us, that you will work your power through both fears and joys! Amen.

Joseph of Bethlehem

— Learn how God — in the person of the Holy Spirit and through Scripture — gives us courage along the journey.

— Explore God's challenge to Joseph to stay faithful to God and true to Mary.

— Discover ways in which we can have the courage to become young men and young women of God.

Accomplice: a person who joins with another in carrying out some plan (especially an illegal or unethical plan)

Peer pressure: the influence exerted by a peer group in persuading a person to change his or her attitudes, values, and/or behavior to conform to the group

Have you ever felt that your own decisions were beyond your control? What I mean is this: Something happens that was not, in any way, a personal choice you made, yet you feel all the weight and judgment of what happens. Perhaps people look at you differently because of a decision made by a family member or close friend. They identify you with that decision and its consequences, even though you had nothing to do with it. They brand you as an accomplice.

Have you ever heard the saying, "You are who your friends are"? There is some truth to this statement. We all are influenced by the people who are closest to us. Whether we realize it or not, these relationships shape us. That's why it's so important to ask ourselves this question:

Do my friends point me upward toward Christ, or do they point me away from a relationship with him?

This question forces us to think critically about whom we allow to influence us. Here's an even more important question:

Am I the kind of friend who points people upward toward a life with Christ, or am I the kind of friend who pulls people downward?

Jesus' desire is for us is to choose to be in relationships that honor him, that help both persons make decisions as Jesus would make them, and in which both persons support each other and grow in faith.

Take Joseph. Joseph and Mary are engaged to be married. As we learned in the previous session, Mary answers God's call to give birth to the promised Messiah, placing her in a unique and touchy situation. She must tell Joseph, her husband-to-be, that she is pregnant and that the child in her womb is the Son of God. Then Joseph has a choice to make.

Read the following from Matthew 1:18-25, from the Common English Bible (CEB), a new translation combining scholarship and readability.

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. When Mary his mother was engaged to Joseph, before they were married, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband was a righteous man. Because he didn't want to humiliate her, he decided to call off their engagement quietly. As he was thinking about this, an angel from the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child she carries was conceived by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you will call him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." Now all of this took place so that what the Lord had spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled:

Look! A virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, And they will call him, Emmanuel.

( Emmanuel means "God with us.")

When Joseph woke up, he did just as an angel from God commanded and took Mary as his wife. But he didn't have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. Joseph called him Jesus.

These verses tell us a powerful story about trust in God. People would surely assume that Joseph and Mary had conceived a child out of wedlock or that Mary had been unfaithful to her fiancé. Joseph could have saved both of them a lot of grief if he had quietly called off the engagement. But he didn't. He remained faithful to God and to Mary. Joseph's decision shows that he was a man of courage and conviction and that he trusted God in a way that was stronger than any judgment the world could bring on him. This speaks greatly to Joseph's character as a man of God and as a soon-to-be husband and father.

Testimony: Phillip's Story

Recently I asked a young man I know named Phillip about character and integrity. Phillip is eighteen years old and a senior in high school.

Jason: Phillip, what does it mean to be a man of character?

Phillip: To me a man of character is someone whom a freshmen or a sophomore can look up to and wants to be like. Everyone goes through tough times. When you have someone to look up to, you think, I can make it through this because he or she did too.

Jason: Do you believe young men fall into temptation out of a fear of judgment?

Russy's Sweet Treats: How this Central Market vendor is 'pouring into our youth'

In 2017, Russalina Nolden started making smoothies in Penn Park, despite never having made one before.

"I didn't know anything about textures or fruit, and they weren't all pretty back then," she joked.

But she's a fast learner, and aside from the appearance, they tasted good. Without knowing it, that day was the start of an unexpected journey that would lead her to open her own business and impact the youth in her community. “Then it was like, OK, I make smoothies now – and I never stopped.”

Her leap of faith paid off, earning her a new title “the Smoothie queen.” She would then continue to vend at sporting events all through York City for several years until opening her stand at Central Market.

A year earlier, she made her first batch of red velvet cupcakes. Although she doesn't eat sweets herself, her treats earned her an early following among her loved ones.

She now owns and operates Russy's Sweet Treats, where she whips up fruit smoothies, homemade sweet indulgences, and soon, fresh pressed juices, in Central Market − and recently she opened a crepe stand right behind it.

'I wasn’t always the sweetest treat'

Nolden grew up on the south side of York City.

Growing up, she was one of four children, and while no one in her family owned their own business, Nolden paved the way for entrepreneurship in her family.

Admittedly, she wasn’t always all smiles as a child and found her way into behavioral issues.

“No one was telling me, ‘you can do it.’ I kind of just learned along the way.”

But Nolden did have one mentor, who she met when she was 7 years old, Inez Munier, who owned the Blue Dove Bridal Shop.

"Be more than what's expected of you, Russalina," was a phrase Munier would tell Nolden as she was growing up, and it's a message she’s carried into adulthood.

In her early adulthood, Nolden studied business management techniques at the Old Dominion Job Corps and Culinary Arts as well as mixology at the Yorktowne Business Institute.

“I’m living proof that you don’t have to be a product of your environment.”

And after expanding her smoothie brand across York City, Nolden was offered an opportunity to open a stand at Central Market – an opportunity she never considered for herself.

“I went to school for culinary arts, but I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be here.”

In late 2021, Nolden met market master Cindy Steele and opened her stand in May.

Steele said she could see something special in Nolden when they first met.

“Russy came to me with a dream to have a lemonade and smoothie stand. She had drive and passion, and she had a community mindset,” Steele said.

‘Pouring into our youth’

Since opening her business, Nolden has involved local youth, hiring students as young as 13 during the summer months to help at her stand, and offering events at the market on holidays and First Fridays to teach children how to bake.

Grateful that someone believed in her at a young age, Nolden knows that not all children have the opportunity for entrepreneurship or mentorship, and one of her goals is to be that person for them.

Five years ago, she saw a young girl on the street selling water bottles. Nolden thought, this 9-year-old girl had the potential to be an entrepreneur one day.

“I asked her mother if I could create her a business,” Nolden said. They sat down and they helped create Ja’Nydiia’s Sweet Teas LLC. "She was probably one of the first kids in the city that had their own LLC.”

Ja’Nydiia sold sweet teas alongside Nolden at local sports tournaments and events around town. Nolden even helped her son start his own lemonade business, Lou Lou's Lemonade, a fresh-squeezed and frozen lemonade vendor.

She and her son work side by side at Nolden's market events, which bring kids and their families together for food-filled events including a make-your-own chocolate bar event, a popcorn bar event, a homemade hot cocoa bomb event, and more.

This year, Nolden was asked to be a career mentor through Reach Cyber Charter School, where she teaches a 10-week home economics course she created, giving kids a hands-on experience involving cooking and entrepreneurship.

“The plan is to inspire them (the kids) to be creators,” Nolden said. “Kids are more determined than we often know – I feel like I can save them by giving them an opportunity to create.”

Nolden likes to say God has a bigger plan for her.

“He orders my steps, and I just obey what he says.”

Pride Spoken Through Customization: LGBTQ+ Voices from the Q Youth Foundation Talk Queer Liberation

Earlier this month, we spotlighted Levi’s® Tailor Rodrigo Bunton Navarrete (he/him/his) and learned about how his dreams for Queer liberation inspire his craft. To continue uplifting LGBTQ+ voices, we partnered with the Q Youth Foundation–an organization that builds meaningful partnerships for marginalized LGBTQ+ communities in Los Angeles–and invited three of their standout members to share their stories while customizing their denim with Rodrigo. We chatted with Mojo Carter (she/they), Sedusa Richman (they/she), and Nathan Sierra (he/she/they) about their individual journeys towards self-discovery and how they hope to impact the LGBTQ+ community.

MEET MOJO CARTER (SHE/THEY)

What does pride mean to you.

Stand out and be who you are. It is all about being seen, heard, and creating a platform to inspire. It only takes one person to make change and I strive to create that space every day.

What inspired you to start doing drag?

I am from North Jersey and would make my way into NYC to the club scene in my younger years. I wanted to see people who look like me and gave me the confidence to be my authentic-self like Drag superstar Aja. Make-up was also a component of being inspired to do drag–it created a canvas of self-expression and helped launch my confidence. I still do make-up and am fortunate to have turned it into a career in addition to drag.

Tell us about someone that positively influenced your journey of self-discovery?

I found stability in my relationship with my Aunt Nikki. She gave me the confidence to not be shy. “You do you, and no one else” is what she used to tell me. What conversation needs to happen next in the journey for Queer liberation?

There needs to be more room for Queer disabled people. By creating more accessibility and opportunity for this part of the community, we will get closer to a truly inclusive Queer safe space.

What does allyship mean to you?

Having a sense of empathy and being able to engage with the Queer community.It is amazing to see how many allies have come together to support the Quuer community, and that’s just the beginning–the fight is not over.

It is all about being seen, heard, and creating a platform to inspire. It takes one person to make change and I strive to create that everyday.

MEET SEDUSA RICHMAN (THEY/SHE)

Being yourself authentically and not altering any part of you to make someone else feel comfortable.

What is your first memory of feeling like you couldn’t be you?

When I was 3 or 4 years old I said, “This cat is so cute” and my dad immediately said, “Guys don’t say that or act like that.” That is my first memory of being human and the start of society policing me in the way I present myself. My family dynamics and relationships were never easy, so I found support where it mattered. My dad recently passed away and the silver lining was that it actually brought my family closer together in a time of sadness. I am lucky that my sisters are my rock and have strengthened our bond. If I could give advice to people of the Queer community stuggling with relationships, it would be to work on those relationships by educating and/or finding a chosen family to support you in your Queerness. Part of being with Q Youth Foundation, I am able to connect and inspire people to be their true Queer authentic-selves.

What inspired you to get into drag?

Where do I start? My sisters were the start of my love for transforming. Being raised in a traditional Mexican family (not typically supportive of being Queer), I was fortunate to have them support my exploration into drag. And of course - my Tias, Mom, Lady Gaga and Selena Quintanilla to name a few iconic women. I even got a tattoo inspired by “Mother Monster” (what fans lovingly call Lady Gaga).

When was your first time celebrating pride.

My first memory of celebrating Pride was watching the Pride parades on the news with my mom. But to physically go out to the Pride events in LA, my first time was this year. After celebrating with my friends and family, I realized there is so much opportunity to educate allies and fellow Queers that June can’t be the only time we come together. Pride should be an always-on mentality to create forever change.

Who is your biggest support?

My mom is my biggest ally and has supported me in my self-discovery. I see my mom as my best-friend because I can tell her anything. I realize how lucky I am to have such great support and pull that forward to supporting other people in the community. One of the main reasons I partner with Q Youth Foundation is the ability to make an impact in the community, all while living my truth and cascading that to the world.

Who is a Queer activist that has impacted your journey within the Queer space?

Bamby Salcedo is a Latina Transgender activist that has impact inside and outside of the community. It was so inspiring to see her be invited to the White House and speak. From HIV awareness to transgender youth protection, Bamby inspires me to get involved and USE MY VOICE.

One of the main reasons I partner with Q Youth Foundation is the ability to make an impact in the community, all while living my truth and cascading that to the world.

Paris 2024 Olympic flame begins journey to France

The three-masted ship set sail from Greece's largest port 90 days before the opening ceremony of the Games on July 26.

In addition, French organizers are eager that the Olympics will inspire and help "engage more youth in sport," he said.

The Olympic flame for Paris 2024 began its journey from Greece's Piraeus port to France on Saturday on board the French ship Belem.

It was the first time in the history of the Games that the Olympic Flame has been transported by sea.

Belem, launched in 1896, the same year the first modern Olympics was hosted in Athens, carries the flame in a lantern.

After crossing the Mediterranean, it is scheduled to reach the port of Marseille on May 8 to kickstart the second leg of the torch relay.

The Greek leg of the torch relay started on April 16 from Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympics 2,800 years ago, where the flame was ignited next to the stadium where ancient athletes competed.

In an official handover ceremony held on Friday at Panathenaic stadium, the venue of the 1896 Games, Tony Estanguet, president of the organising committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, received the flame.

"We are looking forward to welcoming the world," Estanguet said on Saturday shortly before carrying the flame on board Belem.

The 2024 Olympic Games, hosted by France a century after the first time the country hosted the Olympics, will place an emphasis on sustainability and gender equality, he said.

The Games will end on August 11, to be followed by the Paralympics, but after the curtain falls, Parisians will have a clean river Seine to enjoy and new facilities, he told Xinhua of the Paris Olympics' legacy.

Estanguet also sent a message for the Olympic Truce. "Athletes are the best ambassadors of peace," he said.

"The Olympic flame is a symbol of the Olympism, carrying the values of peace and unity," French Minister for Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games Amelie Oudea-Castera told Xinhua on Saturday in front of Belem.

Olympias, a reconstruction of an ancient Athenian trireme (three-rower) vessel, escorted Belem and the flame to the exit of Piraeus port, as spectators waving French flags wished good seas and best success to the Paris Games.

‘A bit surreal’: First female ‘Cup Keeper’ talks about her trailblazing journey with hockey’s grail

TORONTO (AP) — Miragh Bitove vividly remembers her first time seeing the Stanley Cup.

She was a teenager. A cousin was visiting from out of town. Her dad suggested they head to the Hockey Hall of Fame in downtown Toronto and take a look. When the pair hit the top step of the staircase leading to the sport’s silver chalice, Bitove was in awe.

“Nothing like it,” she recalled. “There’s a glow.”

An art history and museum management major, Bitove went on to work as a Hall of Fame intern in 2003 before parlaying that into a job as an archivist at the venue.

Years later, she is the first woman in the role of Cup overseer on its annual celebration tour.

Bitove, her white gloves on whenever she might touch the trophy, hit the road with colleagues last summer, crisscrossing North America as the Vegas Golden Knights basked in the glory of their victory.

“We see a bit of everything,” Bitove told the Canadian Press. “From wedding-sized parties right down to potlucks in grandma’s garage. It’s great watching people’s natural reactions. Incredibly special.”

What’s also special is Bitove blazing a trail handling the Cup in a sport that has been dominated by men for the better part of a century. The mother of three — two boys and a girl — said she doesn’t want special treatment.

“A bit surreal,” Bitove said of being the first woman in the job. “That part doesn’t really enter into my train of thought. When you go out on these trips, you get some sad faces in the house. I’ve always said, ‘I want to go out there and travel so that other girls can see me working in hockey.’”

Bitove has also turned some heads on those long days.

“If I’m in my (Hall of Fame) blazer it’s, ‘Oh, I didn’t know they made that blazer for women,’” said the Toronto native. “And that’s great ... I’m glad to be out there and have people see it.”

Phil Pritchard — the Hall of Fame’s vice president and the “Keeper of the Cup” — remembers when Bitove first arrived in the building.

“She had all the interest, all the background, everything that we’re looking for,” he said. “When you get someone like that, you don’t want to lose them.”

Bitove also has the game in her blood. While never a hockey player herself, the family tree includes great uncle Ted Kennedy, who won the Cup five times with the Toronto Maple Leafs between 1945 and 1951.

“Hockey was sort of in my periphery,” she said. “In my grandmother’s house was a giant portrait of my uncle Ted in game action — black and white, beautiful photo. I walked (into the Hall of Fame) actually looking for information on my uncle Ted. It organically sprouted from there.”

Bitove and her colleagues are tasked with taking care of the Cup every moment it’s on the road. The team atmosphere and camaraderie is crucial, especially on those long stretches away from home.

“She fits the perfect mold for the Hockey Hall of Fame,” Pritchard said. “If that falls under the arc of being the first woman on the road with the Cup, so be it.”

When she isn’t getting hundreds of pictures taken alongside the Cup in small towns and big cities, Bitove works with other artifacts to tell the game’s story.

“Every new item that comes into the museum comes through my desk, so I’m writing the history of hockey,” she explained. “Fifty years from now people can go back and see what the Hockey Hall of Fame had to say.”

Bitove has spoken to her 7-year-old daughter — the only girl on the little one’s co-ed hockey team — about what mom is up to.

“I always tell her, ‘You’ve got to double down, work hard and prove that you belong,’” said Bitove, who’s equally proud to have her boys, ages nine and 11, witness a woman in this role. “When I go on the road ... I’m doing it so other people can see me working in hockey.”

The Hockey Hall of Fame used to parade the Cup a short distance back to the museum from Toronto’s Union Station at the conclusion of every summer tour. Back in 2003, that event happened to fall on Bitove’s first day as an intern.

“Phil Pritchard goes, ‘Oh, just hold on. I’ll be right back. I have to do this parade,’” she said. “I looked out the window of our offices and I saw him parading down with the Stanley Cup. I thought, ‘Where am I? This is crazy.’”
