Sex, strippers and scandal: inside madonna’s ‘the girlie show’ tour 30 years on.

After 1990’s groundbreaking Blond Ambition Tour, Madonna continued to push boundaries — and buttons — with The Girlie Show, her most titillating trek of all, in 1993.

But while the Queen of Pop was ever the provocateur, she turned to some old Hollywood royalty, Gene Kelly, for a touch of classicism. The “Singin’ in the Rain” stepper swooped in to choreograph a number for the “Erotica” ballad “Rain.”

“When he came in, we were just in awe,” The Girlie Show background singer Donna De Lory told The Post. “He would tell us stories about how back in the day, when he danced with women, he couldn’t touch the women — he had to keep his hand, like, two inches from their body.”

But it’s no surprise that this collaboration ultimately didn’t click, with Madonna firing the screen legend, given all the risqué business in The Girlie Show.

After the raunchy rollout of her “Erotica” album, “Sex” book and “Body of Evidence” film, the pop superstar had reached a new level of controversy. Still, that backlash didn’t make her back down when The Girlie Show opened 30 years ago on Sept. 25, 1993 in London — where Madge will also launch her 40th-anniversary Celebration Tour on Saturday night.

Now, three decades on, The Girlie Show still remains just as shocking as it did in the early 1990s.

From the moment that a topless Carrie Ann Inaba — now a squeaky-clean “Dancing with a Stars” judge —— slid down that stripper pole, it was a defiant descent into the sexual underworld in the age of AIDS.

“She was unabashed and just unapologetically herself,” said The Girlie Show guitarist Paul Pesco. “She was just saying, ‘Hey, this is me. This is what I want to do.’ And, you know, it was always very artistic and very tasteful … It felt natural and just strong.”

Inspired by Edward Hopper’s 1941 “Girlie Show” painting of a burlesque stripper, the international tour met with protests and calls for the concert’s cancellation.

“All that stuff — I just kind of tuned it out” said De Lory. “I mean, it just was like business as usual honestly. There was always somebody saying something about her … She was always pushing people’s buttons.”

Carrie Ann Inaba in the Girlie Show.

She was also pushing herself — and her creative team.

“The thing is, she’s a perfectionist,” said Pesco, who had previously played on Madonna’s 1985 Virgin Tour. “Once everything was worked out, she would run the show, have lunch, [then] run it again, and then maybe work out kinks. I always admired her work ethic — and her respect for the creative people she would collaborate with.

“As we would rehearse the set, we would actually craft the arrangements together, and if somebody had an idea, she would listen to those ideas and we’d try things out. It really was an organically fused performance.”

De Lory and her fellow background vocalist Niki Haris — who both sang with Madonna on 1987’s “Who’s That Girl” trek before returning for 1990’s Blond Ambition — would get a special spotlight in The Girlie Show thanks to the singer’s brother Christopher Ciccone, who was the tour director.

“I have to give a shout-out to him … because he was always advocating for Nikki and I,” she says. “He loved us being with Madonna. He loved those numbers [with] the three girls together and that energy. And I think that’s probably why we’re in it the most in that show.”

De Lory, who has a new “Praying for Love” remix out now, would go on to back Madonna up on 2001’s Drowned World Tour, 2004’s Re-Invention Tour and 2006’s Confessions Tour. And she and Harris continue to perform together — they’ll be at Phoenix Pride Festival on Oct. 22.

Meanwhile, Pesco — who first played with Madonna before she was even signed — is working on a project with The Girlie Show drummer Omar Hakim three decades after they opened that tour at London’s Wembley Stadium.

“I do remember being nervous … hoping everything runs smoothly and that there’s no major train wrecks,” he said.

And De Lory is looking forward to Madonna’s latest reinvention as the Celebration Tour — delayed three months because of her health scare in late June — kicks off at the O2 Arena on Saturday night.

“She’s brilliant at doing that,” she says. “Let’s just appreciate her for being here … one of the best stage performers of all time.”

“I have no right to give any information that is not completely confirmed as of this moment,” Haris very carefully tells the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast with a laugh. “With that said, we take joy wherever we can find it — if it’s on our stage, at Madison Square Garden, wherever the joy is. In [Madonna’s] living room. … The bottom line is, we’re in town. … We may just go grab a coffee together. Who knows?”

De Lory adds: “No matter what, we’re just gonna have a great time.”

When De Lory and Haris hit the stage at The Green Room 42 this weekend, what can fans expect?

For years, De Lory and Haris were behind Madonna — supporting the superstar on the road, during television performances on the Grammy Awards and MTV Video Music Awards, and singing on many of her albums and singles. The pair joined Madonna on four tours between 1987 and 2001, with De Lory continuing to perform on two more Madonna tours in 2004-06. Their voices can be heard on many Madonna recordings released from 1987-98, including the Like a Prayer , I’m Breathless and Erotica albums, and singles such as “Vogue,” “Cherish,” “Deeper and Deeper” and “Nothing Really Matters.”

So, with so much recording history behind them, would De Lory and Haris be open to recording with Madonna, on record and in the studio for a song, if the opportunity presented itself?

“I feel for myself,” De Lory says, “and I feel for Niki as well, we would love that. We would love that. And I know that the magic that was always there would be there. … It would be sweet if that happened. … We just all have a great blend and great energy, and that will always be there.”

“I’d love to just sit around a room,” Haris says, “have [Madonna] grab her guitar, Donna go to the keyboard, and let’s just do what we love to do. … God, we just like to sing together. I would rather just sing without an agenda. Just sing.”

While De Lory and Haris are best-known for backing Madonna for years, they’ve also had their own solo careers, and also provided backing vocals individually on albums from the likes of Belinda Carlisle, Whitney Houston, Santana and Selena. In 2016, the pair came together to work on their first album, the Two Friends EP, which was released in 2017. Since then they have continued to release stand-alone tracks, and have hopes of releasing further new material, perhaps setting up camp in Nashville to work with a producer/songwriter to collaborate on new music.

De Lory says: “I knew when we went in to do those vocals at that session, it was a fresh sound… the music was so powerful.” Haris says that we’re in a “society that now is celebrating voguing, celebrating being a drag queen, celebrating [drag] houses … you just have a bigger audience that’s being more accepted” and adds that “‘Vogue’ is such an infectious kind of energy… it’s celebratory.”

Also on the new edition of the Pop Shop Podcast, we’ve got chart news on the debut of Grande’s “Yes, And?” atop the Billboard Hot 100, and how 21 Savage and Kali Uchis make splashy debuts on the Billboard 200 albums chart. INTERVIEW WITH DONNA DE LORY

Donna De Lory has been touring with Madonna ever since the Who’s That Girl Tour in 1987 up until the Confessions Tour in 2006 and has become a very familiar face in the Madonna community. Donna has a fantastic solo career with the most stunning songs you’ll ever hear (scroll down for her iTunes music page). Since it’s been 30 years since she first started touring with Madonna, she is sharing some of her memories with us.

MU: This was your first time working on a live show with Madonna, how was this particular tour different from the other tours you have worked on with Madonna?

Donna: I was so young, ambitious and impressionable!!! All I wanted was to travel, singing and dancing and exploring the world. I felt that when I first got this job working with Madonna, my life changed completely. It was a dream come true.  I was so happy after years of working hard, to receive this recognition for my talents and years of practice.

MU: Can you tell us anything about the auditioning process for the Who’s That Girl Tour?

Donna: OOh it’s quite a story but I’ll try to make it short.

Well I got a call from Patrick Leonard…who had first heard my voice on the demo I sang for “Open Your Heart”. He told me that he loved my voice and he asked me to come in to his studio and work with him on some records he was producing. When I found out that he was the musical director for the tour, I immediately suggested that I would be perfect for it. He had told me they already hired 3 girls hired from the show,  “Little Shop Of Horrors”. Every time I would go in to work with him I would bring it up. Then one day I got the call. He said, “Donna, what are you doing today?” He told me that there may be an audition for the tour because one of the girls was not working out. I said, Oh yes, I was available and he said he would call back to let me know when and where. So I had a friend come over immediately and do my make up(red lips) and hair(black to contrast Madonna) I picked out a black and white outfit that had a Pirate/Spanish flair. I went in later that day to SIR rehearsal studios where her band was set up and I saw every singer that I knew in LA there!! I knew that I would have an advantage because I also danced. They took us up on the stage to sing with M in groups of 3. The girls that I was with were not blending too well and I thought that it was over for me. Luckily, Pat said just Donna and Madonna sing the bridge to La Isla Bonita together.  Of coarse I was very nervous standing there with Madonna for the first time. She had her back turned when we were singing. Then she stopped and said, Why aren’t you singing?? Pat spoke up for me and said that I was singing and that our voices blended perfectly together. After that they had me come back to dance with the other dancers and it wasn’t for a few days till I knew I had the job. They even secretly taped my voice while I was dancing to see if I could sing and dance together?

MU: I know you’ve probably answered this one a million times already but can you share your memory of what it was like meeting Madonna for the first time?

Donna: I was nervous being at the audition and when she walked in I did not recognize her. She had short hair and small rimmed glasses and she was wearing a suit!! Then I heard her voice and knew it was her. She was very serious and I felt that she wanted to get the auditions over with right away and get on with the rehearsals. A few days later we were standing side by side in front of the bathroom mirror putting on our make up having girl talk. Then that night, we were riding in her Limo to visit Billy Idol at his concert when her music came on the radio. It was a moment I will never forget.

MU: Do you remember once rehearsals started if certain songs were rehearsed that never made the final setlist?

Donna: I don’t remember. By the time I came in they had worked the songs out already.

MU: Was there any room for your own input? Were some of your ideas used?

Donna: When I first started to work on the tour I didn’t have much say and the concepts and music was already worked out but I would get excited about ideas and say yeah, we have to do that!

MU: Was there a certain stop during the tour that you remember most and why?

Donna: Really, every stop on that first tour made such an impression on me and my life.

The first stop was Japan. When we arrived at the airport we were swarmed with cameras and there were school girls everywhere. I loved visiting the Buddhist temples there as well.

Italy was amazing too!!! I felt like I was home there as one of my grandfather’s was from Parma.  I loved the people and the food!!! They just went CRAZY for us.

donna de lory tour

MU: What part/song of the show was your favorite and why?

Donna: The slow song that had this lyric “No where to run, no where to hide from the look of love from the eyes of pride”. It was great to see Madonna just be there with the people and sing this great heartfelt song. Everyone would hold up their lighters (not phones then). It felt like a dream as our voices floated through the air looking out onto the ocean of lights. She used to tell us how vulnerable she felt at that part of the show.

MU: Did you get the keep any of the costumes from the tour?

Donna: Yes!!! I gave some of them to friends and family….hope they still have them! I remember when I first saw the many costumes I thought.. I get to wear those??

MU: Do you remember the Rotterdam (Holland) stop of the tour? It was Madonna’s very first live show in Holland and things were crazy!

Donna: Yes it was crazy!!! We were wanting everyone to have fun and most of all BE SAFE. There is nothing like that feeling of being on stage with a great artist and all of those beautiful people!!! Thank you!!

MU: Was there a funny moment during the tour you think fans would love to know about?

Donna: We (not Madonna) had one day off in Amsterdam we were out doing our laundry when we decided to eat some hash brownies and go sightseeing.  We ended up at the Anne Frank house. I was climbing up the stairs thinking how am I going to get down these. It is a very serious historical place to be so I look forward to going back there one day.

MU: Do you miss touring with Madonna?

Donna: Some things I miss about it like being on stage and looking out and feeling all of the love from the fans. I loved to move around the world like that too (1st Class!) and it was a lot more effortless on that first tour.

MU: Which particular tour do you have the most fond memories of and why.

Donna: Probably Who’s that Girl since it was my first tour and The Blond Ambition Tour because Niki and I were a big part of the show and we really got to use our talents. It was such an exciting time in my life with the sky opening to my own artist career. The camera’s were there too filming the documentary and I felt like I was something great that would be remembered for a long time.

MU: During the Confessions Tour in Amsterdam stop you performed an instore in music store FAME, do you remember that? A huge amount of fans turned up, got to see you perform some of your own songs and after got the album ‘Sky is Open’ signed

Donna: I loved being there!!! I’ll never forget the support that the people gave to me there!!! I was there playing solo with my harmonium with all of those people. Maybe I’ll come back there and Play with Niki next year!!

MU: What are your plans for your solo carreer? Will there be more albums? My personal favorite is ‘The Lover and the Beloved’

Donna: Thank you!! That was my first Yoga Album. Yes I am working on a new Album mostly in English. Songs that are very personal to me including a Spanish song that I wrote with my Dad called “Amor Amor”  I am thinking that I would love to film a video for the song with Nick Spanos in Cuba. What do you think? (MU: fantastic idea!)

MU: You have been reunited with Niki working on a cover of ‘Rain’ which is stunningly beautiful and an EP, what was it like working with Niki again?

Donna: Niki and I are two Friends for life! When we sing together it is effortless. I love Niki and we have so much music in us to be created together. I am so thankful to all of the fans that have supported us with our music so far. I know that we will always sing together.  I am so thankful to Madonna for bringing us together 30 years ago and grateful for all of these life experiences and FOR YOU and your love and support you have given me over the years!!

Thank you! Namaste. May Love and Light fill you always, Donna

After Years With Madonna, Singers Niki Haris And Donna De Lory Share More Musical Magic

Curtis M. Wong

Senior Culture Reporter, HuffPost

donna de lory tour

A month after Madonna brought her Celebration Tour to a close with a record-smashing performance in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, two of her most beloved collaborators continue to honor her legacy ― along with their own musical journey ― onstage.

On Friday, Niki Haris and Donna De Lory will return to New York’s Green Room 42 for an encore engagement of their concert, “Niki + Donna: Songs and Stories.” While their individual careers have encompassed jazz, New Age, and other musical genres, Haris and De Lory endeared themselves to legions of fans in the 1980s and ’90s when they provided Madonna’s backing vocals on records and tour and were featured in the seminal 1991 documentary, “ Truth or Dare .”

The two women returned to the studio for the first time in 2016 to record a tender version of Madonna’s “Rain,” followed a year later by a five-song EP, “ Two Friends. ” Not surprisingly, “Rain” was a highlight of the New York engagement in January, as seen in the below video.

Watch Niki Haris and Donna De Lory perform “Rain.”

“I believe this song’s lyrics are indicative of the many years we have been together, alternating between sunshine and stormy,” Haris told HuffPost in an email. “We continue to weather it all, knowing that the sun shines when we focus on our love and the music we share. That’s what we stand for.”

She went on to note: “We feel blessed every time we sing that and remind people to stand for those words … rain down love whenever, and wherever, you can!”

Haris and De Lory’s recent shows have included other Madonna hits, such as the 1986 classic “ Open Your Heart ” and “Nothing Really Matters,” off 1998′s “Ray of Light” album. They’ve also featured songs by Bonnie Raitt and Frank Sinatra, among other artists.

Niki Haris and Donna De Lory will reprise their acclaimed joint concert in New York on June 6.

“I know fans would love to see us sing with Madonna again, but I think what we have to give as artists is more powerful with our own collaboration,” De Lory said, noting that she and Haris have discussed the possibility of a second EP. “When we sing together, it unifies us in a place of mutual recognition and respect.”

Haris and De Lory first met during auditions for Madonna’s Who’s That Girl Tour in 1987, and went on to appear in the now-iconic music video for “Vogue” three years later. Haris continued to work with Madonna until the 2001 Drowned World Tour , while DeLory remained a part of the pop star’s touring entourage until 2006 .

Given Madonna’s stature as a global icon, it’s no surprise that unsubstantiated rumors of behind-the-scenes drama have long persisted. Haris and DeLory, however, appeared jubilant when they were invited to attend one of their former employer’s performances at New York’s Madison Square Garden earlier this year.

From left: Donna De Lory, Madonna and Niki Haris at the New York premiere of "Truth or Dare" in 1991.

“Singing jazz, I don’t regularly get to hear much of the music I performed with Madonna, [so] it was another affirmation of the years we poured into each other and the great fun we had along the way,” Haris said. “It filled my heart with joy to see people loving us up when we came into the stadium and knowing they still celebrate our connection.”

Added De Lory: “It was so exciting to be there in the audience with the fans with Niki by my side, and I turned to her at one point and said, ‘This may be the only time that you and I are together watching Madonna’s show.’ So it was a very special moment.”

Donna De Lory: ‘Life on tour with Madonna was exhilarating and exhausting… I couldn’t keep up’

2023 - Donna Delory - Daily Mirror header

It was 1987, and Madonna had hand-picked the 21-year-old performer to join her on her Who’s That Girl tour to be her backing singer and dancer.

As cameras flashed and schoolgirls lining the airport’s arrivals lounge screamed and jumped up and down with joy, Donna De Lory’s jaw dropped at the cacophony of noise.

It was 1987, and Madonna had hand-picked the 21-year-old performer to join her on her Who’s That Girl tour – her first stadium tour – to be her backing singer and dancer. It was a decision that would change Donna’s life forever.

They had just landed in Japan, and Madonna’s tour manager Eric Barrett beckoned her over.

donna de lory tour

“He leaned over and he was like, ‘Kid, this is the biggest it ever gets’,” recalls Donna, now 58.

“All of a sudden being catapulted into this world, for me it was overwhelming.

“Madonna was surrounded by security and it was like two rivers of people and cameras on either side. I’d never experienced things coming at me, we were all crying and she was just so cool.”

That sense of cool has barely faded in the intervening decades and this week, as Madonna announced her 40th anniversary tour, tickets sold out in minutes and new dates were added within hours.

donna de lory tour

But Donna is one of the few who know what life on the road with the Queen of Pop is truly like… exhilarating and exhausting in equal measure.

Madonna worked her crew hard, setting high standards for her energetic shows that meant Donna and her co-backing vocalist and dancer Niki Haris spent hours and hours rehearsing.

“We couldn’t quite understand why – we’d run through it three times already. Madonna would tell us, ‘Well, you just don’t know what’s going to happen out there. There could be rain, there could be wind, there could be costumes breaking. You have to be on automatic so you can make the right decisions in the moment’.”
