Dubai: If you have recently applied for your family's visa, a visit visa or an employment visa in the UAE, you may be interested in tracking the visa application status. If so, here is all you need to know.

There are various online and offline facilities by the UAE government, which you can use to track your visa application status.

What do you need?

To track your visa application, you would need the following details:

- Reference number

- Application number

Once you have applied for your visa, you will receive a copy of your application form.

"The reference number can be found on the visa application that you have submitted. Once you apply for a residence visa or an e-visa, the reference number can be found on the application form," Shafiq Muhammad, Public Relations Officer with Muhaisnah Documents Clearing Services in Dubai

If you only have your passport number for the enquiry, you can only check the UAE visa status and validity after it has been issued, not while it is under process. The details are provided below.

The reference number can be found on the visa application that you have submitted. Once you apply for a residence visa or an e-visa, the reference number can be found on the application form. - Shafiq Muhammad, Public Relations Officer with Muhaisnah Documents Clearing Services in Dubai

Track visa application

As per the UAE Government’s official website – u.ae – if you have applied for a visa to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, you can track your visa application on the website of Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICA) through the following website: https://smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/applicationTracking

Here you would need to enter the ‘Request number’ or the Application number.

Once you enter the Application number, the system will give you an update on the visa application status.

If you applied for a Dubai visa or through Amer centres in Dubai, you can track your visa application through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs-Dubai here: https://smart.gdrfad.gov.ae/Public_Th/StatusInquiry_New.aspx

Once you visit the link, you would need to enter Application number, transaction number as well as the payment date, all of which can be found on your application form.

Other channels for tracking Dubai visas

You can also contact Amer Centre on 800 5111.

How can I track my visa only through the passport number?

If you only wish to track your visa’s status through your passport number, you can use the ICA service here: https://beta.smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/fileValidity

This allows visa holders to check the status and validity of their visas. However, this service can only be used if your visa has been issued, not if it is still under process, according to Muhammad.

“We can only check the details of the visa status and validity through this process once the visa has been issued – whether residence or visit visa. Once you visit the link, it gives you two options for checking the visa satus of ‘e-visa’ or ‘residency’, which is for residence visas or visit visas. The residence visa can only be checked after the visa has been stamped on your passport. If you have an entry permit or visit visa issued, you can select the e-visa option,” Muhammad said.

Step 1: Visit https://beta.smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/fileValidity

Step 2: Select ‘Search by Passport information’.

Step 3: If you are enquiring about your residence visa, select ‘Residency’. If you have a visit visa or an e-visa/entry permit, select ‘Visa’.

Step 4: Enter your passport number, passport expiry date and nationality.

Step 5: Check the Captcha box for verifying your identity and click ‘Search’.

The system will then provide you details like the visa file number, Unified ID number, visa status, date of issue and expiry.

After you've submitted your Dubai Visa application, you'll want to keep an eye on its progress as you make your travel plans. When checking your visa status, you may come across certain codes that indicate the current status of your application. To help you understand these codes, here's a brief rundown:

RECEIVED: Your application has been received and is now undergoing initial assessment by the relevant authorities.

UNDER PROCESSING: At this point, your application is under review. Officials are examining your documents, conducting background checks, and reaching a decision.

ISSUED: This status confirms that your visa to Dubai has been approved. You can now move forward with your travel preparations.

REJECTED: This indicates that your application wasn't successful. The exact reasons for denial may be provided in a separate notice.

For visa holders, it remains essential to regularly check your Dubai visa status. Here's why:

To stay informed about the active duration of your visa.

To anticipate when you'll need to renew or extend your visa.

To prevent potential issues, such as overstaying, which could result in penalties.

Required documents for your Dubai Visa check

Dealing with visa expiry, renewals, and overstays

It's important to keep track of your visa status so that you can renew it or leave the UAE before it expires. Staying beyond its expiry is considered as overstaying, leading to complications.

What can happen if you overstay your visa?

Fines: In the UAE, if you overstay your visa, you'll be charged AED 50 for each day. Continuous violations can lead to even higher charges.

Deportation: If your visa is over 60 days overdue, the authorities could deport you. This would mean you'd have to leave the UAE, and you might not be allowed back in for a while.

Travel ban: Being deported for visa issues can land you on a travel blacklist. This could keep you from returning to the UAE, even if you have a valid visa later on.

Criminal charges: Overstaying isn't just a simple matter; it can be considered breaking the law. If found guilty, you might face time in jail, additional fines, or both.

What to do after your UAE visa expires

If your visa expires while you're in the UAE, it's essential to act quickly.

The first step should be to try to extend or renew your visa. This is the most direct way to legally extend your stay. You can apply for an extension or renewal through the ICP website.

But, if extending or renewing isn't an option, you might have to exit the UAE and then apply for a new visa. In this case, you should contact the embassy or consulate of your home country for assistance.

For a smooth UAE visa application experience—and to get it done in less than 30 minutes—we recommend using our platform. Start your UAE Visa application with iVisa .

Renewing your UAE Visa

Renewing a visa in the UAE isn't a one-size-fits-all procedure. The process to follow depends on your visa type and the reason you're extending it. Generally, you'd need to fill out an application, attach the required documents, pay any fees, and then wait for a decision on your application.

For most visit and tourist visas, a 30-day renewal is possible once the immigration authorities have given their approval . And before this renewal period runs out, there's an option for a second renewal. However, those on a 90-day visit visa should note that they can only get a single 30-day extension .

According to the ICP, resident visas that last more than six months can't be renewed at the moment. But after the visa expires or is canceled, expats get a 6-month period to either get a new residence visa or leave the UAE. Plus, there are no fines during these 6 months .

Tourist visa is for those who are not eligible for  visa on arrival  or a  visa-free entry  to the UAE. Tourist visa can be obtained for eligible individual tourists from around the world. Females below the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for this type of visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

According to a Cabinet resolution passed in July 2018, children under the age of 18 years who are accompanying adults, can get a  free visa for their visit from 15 July to 15 September each year.

Tourist visas through airlines

Each airline has some conditions, which must be met in order for your visa to be arranged by them. One of the conditions is flying with them. For more updated and specific information, check the following UAE-based airlines for visa types, facilities, terms and conditions:

  • Visa services from Etihad Airways  - Etihad Airways
  • Visa Services offered by Emirates Airline  - Emirates Airline
  • Visa services from Fly Dubai  - Fly Dubai
  • Visa services from Air Arabia  - Air Arabia

Tourist visas through agencies and hotels

Licensed travel agents and hotels in the UAE can arrange a tourist visa for you provided you purchase the ticket through them and maintain hotel reservation with the specific hotel.

You can also contact travel agencies in your country for any tourist packages available to the UAE in collaboration with a local tour operator.

It is important to check the authenticity of travel agents you are dealing with and refrain from paying or sending copies of your official documents until after you are 100 per cent sure the tour operator is genuine. You can seek the help of the  UAE embassy in your country  for verification.

Note: The UAE embassies do not issue tourist visas. In order to get a tourist visa to the UAE, you need to get in touch with one of the UAE-based airlines, a tour agency or a hotel (where you intend to stay) in the UAE who will apply for visa on your behalf to the official  visa-issuing authorities  in the UAE.

Understanding the Significance of Visa Status Check UAE

How to check visa status using passport number, required documentation for dubai visa check online, additional ways for uae visa status checking, key benefits of visa status check by passport number, common issues encountered during uae visa status checks.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is becoming a global hub for thousands of visitors and expatriates. People are turning towards the country either for work, residency, or travel, so being informed about your visa status is crucial.

The UAE extends an efficient and streamlined process from visa application to status checking, and you can do that, too, online.

An essential tool for tourists, expatriates, and residents, online visa status checks are increasingly gaining popularity because of their feasibility and updated information.

The UAE’s online portals are primarily advantageous for visa status checks, real-time information, and the timeliness they offer.

You can simply avoid legal complications regarding expired visas, overstaying, or other complexities by using online portals.

So, if you are concerned about your visa status but don’t have the time to run forth and back to visa offices, this blog post is here to guide you through a more simplified process: checking your UAE visa status online. Stick to the article to ensure you follow each step accurately and avoid common mistakes.

How to Check UAE Visa Status

Checking your visa status with your passport number in the UAE requires more than routine procedures. It is essential to ensure your stay is lawful in the UAE.

Whether you are an expat employed in the country or a tourist visiting for a short time, regular verification of your visa status enables you to manage potential overstay fees, immigration records, and renewal information.

Checking your visa status using your passport number will swiftly ensure that your visa status is in good standing and will prevent you from additional fines or penalties associated with visa violations.

The Common Visa Statuses

Keeping track of your visa application might be nerve-racking but crucial. Many people apply for visas for the first time and are unaware of different status divisions. So, feel your problem is resolved with the information below.

When navigating your visa application, you might confront any of the four codes;

  • Received: This code means that your application has been received by the relevant authorities and is ready for the initial assessment process.
  • Under Processing: This code implies reviewing your application. This includes evaluating documents, conducting background checks, and making a final decision by relevant authorities.
  • Rejected/ Denied: The rejected code on your visa application specifies that relevant authorities have denied your application. However, the reasons might reach to you in a separate notice.
  • Issued: This code confirms the success of your visa application for Dubai and allows you to proceed with further processes.

As mentioned, the UAE has highlighted various ways to check your UAE visa status using a passport number. The government has introduced numerous official portals to offer a seamless and efficient procedure of visa status checking to tourists and expatriates alike.

1. Visit the Official Portal of the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP)

The ICP portal is an authorized government website that manages visa and residency applications and grants visa status information to UAE residents. Here’s a step-wise guide to how you can check your UAE visa status using your passport number;

Steps to Follow:

  • Open your web browser and visit the official ICP portal .
  • A dashboard will open on your screen, suggesting various options. Navigate to the “Application Tracking” option, which is typically listed under the public visa services.

The website ensures real-time data, offering a feasible course of action for UAE residents, expats, and tourists.

Note: The citizens of UAE can also check their visa status by entering their Emirates ID number.

2. Using the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs- Dubai (GDRFAD) Portal

GDRFA is another authorized portal for checking the UAE visa status if you reside in Dubai. The process of checking visa status at GDRFAD is similar to that of the ICP source but is specific to the Emirate of Dubai.

  • Visit the GDRFAD portal .
  • A dashboard will appear on the screen, suggesting various options. Click on the “visa status” to proceed successively.

3. UAE Smart Applications for Checking Visa Status

  • The essential details are similar to those on the web portal, requiring passport number and nationality to provide the desired results.

These applications remain up-to-date and ensure user-friendly interfaces, which makes them a preferable choice, specifically if you are not a regular desktop user.

To check the status of your UAE visa passport, it is essential to carry the intricate details alongside. The main document required while checking visa status online is your passport, which entails details like passport expiry date, passport number, and information regarding your nationality.

In addition, the information required while entering to check visa status online may differ from website to website and visa type. Few authorized portals often require visa application reference numbers and personal details like birth date, full name, etc.

Individuals can also use alternative ways besides online visa checking by passport number. A few of the additional methods include;

  • Email: You can contact the relevant authorities through email. The email contact for visa-related assistance is [email protected] .
  • Phone Number: You can directly retrieve a response from the ICP assistance center by calling +971 24955555.
  • Visit the ICP Office: Individuals residing in the UAE can directly visit the ICP Customer Happiness Center or the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner Affairs.
  • Submit Online Form: Individuals can also submit their visa-related inquiries through an online inquiry form accessible on the ICP portal.

1. Ensure Timely Visa Renewals

Maintaining a valid and active visa is essential for expatriates employed in the UAE. Regular visa status checks will enable you to acknowledge the exact date of your visa expiry.

Hence, you can begin your renewal process accordingly and before the deadline. Early renewals also aid in avoiding any interruptions in travel or employment plans.

2. Avoid Overstay Fines

Regular visa checks will also prevent overstay fines, making the online visa status check by passport number an immense blessing. The UAE immigration policies are strict, and heavy fines are imposed on those who overstay their visas.

Individuals will be charged AED 50 for each day on violation of overstaying, whereas the fine can rise in case of consistent violations. Therefore, tracing the visa’s expiration date through authorized portals will allow for advanced action, and you can either leave the country or renew your visa before penalties are applied.

3. Abstain Travel Bans or Deportation

One of the other benefits of checking your visa status online by passport number is avoiding travel bans or deportation. The authorities can deport you or put you on a travel blacklist if you overstay your visa. This can restrain you from returning to the United Arab Emirates later, even with a valid visa.

4. Stay Compliant with the UAE Laws

In order to make your stay lawful and peaceful in the country, stay compliant with UAE laws because as far as the country has a dynamic environment for expatriates, the immigration laws and regulations are strict on the same level.

You can always ensure your compliance with the country’s immigration regulations through regular visa status checks.

5. Real-Time Data and Accuracy

Retrieve real-time and accurate information through government-authorized portals and applications, and check your visa status regularly using the simplified method with your passport number.

The portals and apps mentioned above eliminate the risk of outdated or incorrect information and add an additional layer of benefits for expats and frequent travelers.

Checking your visa status online is a straightforward process, yet some issues or technical complexities can restrict your course of action. Awareness of common issues will aid you in overstays, confusion, or delays.

1. Incorrect Nationality or Passport Number Entry

One common issue users confront is entering an incorrect nationality or passport number. Minor errors in entering the pertinent details can prevent the system from displaying your visa status. It is advisable to double-check the details to ensure that they are similar to those in your official passport.

2. Visa Status Not Found

Users may encounter a rare error implying that “your visa status cannot be found.” This unusual status may occur if your visa has recently expired, is under processing, or is because of any other discrepancy in the system. In such cases, it is better to contact GDRFAD or ICP directly for assistance or clarification.

3. System Maintenance or Downtime

The online websites occasionally experience technical downtime or undergo maintenance. The visa status cannot be retrieved in such cases, so it is best to wait a few hours before another attempt. Alternatively, individuals can also contact the relevant authorities for assistance.

4. Renewing Your UAE Visa – Necessary Details

While checking your visa status online, if you come to know that your visa expiry is near, then visit the relevant authority’s office. The renewal process typically requires the reason for stay extension and renewal fees.

You will also be required to attach the necessary documents with the visa extension application. However, renewal on resident visas is typically inactive at the moment but grants new resident visa application options after a specific 6-month of time.

Maintain your visa validity to remain a lawful part of the vibrant country of the UAE. However, the tight schedule may prevent you from visiting Visa offices. It’s no trouble at all because the UAE government knows every means of providing convenience and feasibility to its visitors, residents, and workers.

The broad set up of online tools, including mobile applications and authorized websites, allows individuals to have an updated forum to stay informed on their visa statuses.

Now, you can check your visa status online using your passport number and ensure compliance with UAE immigration laws. Furthermore, regular visa check-ups will help you renew your visa on time and prevent you from overstaying fines, deportation, or travel bans.

By following the steps outlined above, you can manage your residency and visa status confidently without encountering unnecessary complexities. However, remember to double-check the information to enjoy a hassle-free experience in the UAE.

In case you have been residing in the UAE, but you want to move out or you have any other reason to leave, you have to cancel your visa.

It is very important to cancel it timely, so you can prepare everything to leave. Once you have cancelled your visa, you have a grace period in which you can stay legally in the country.

Similarly, if your visa has expired, you also have the same grace period in case you do not want to renew it.

In both cases, the ICP announced that the grace period was extended from 30 days to 6 months. As you can see, you have several months to decide what to do.
