Avion Travel

Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel, knownas Avion Travel , was founded in Caserta in 1980 and during the years crossed rock, pop, and new wave with incursions in the cinematic hemisphere, theatre, and Italian musical tradition.

Avion Travel participated in the Sanremo Festival in 1987, winning the rock section with the song “Sorpassando”. In 1992 they released their first album Bellosguardo which, together with Opplà in the following year and Finalmente Fiori (1995), symbolized one of the cornerstones of the historic band’s music together with the beginning of their success. During these years, the Piccola Orchestra was formed by Peppe Servillo (vocals), Fausto Mesolella (guitar), Mario Tronco (keyboard), Mimì Ciaramella (drums), Ferruccio Spinetti (double bass), and Peppe D’Argenzio (sax).

From 1995 Avion Travel started a series of parallel projects which merged music, cinema, and theatre. The first one was La guerra vista dalla luna , a single-act musical play starring the famous Italian actor Fabrizio Bentivoglio. The play debuted at Teatro Parioli (Roma) in May 1995 and was then staged in major Italian and foreign cities.

After curating the soundtrack of the film Hotel Paura by Renato De Maria (1996), they embarked on national and international tour in the summer of 1997. From that tour was released their first live album, Vivo di Canzoni (1998).

That same year they participated in the forty-eighth edition of the Sanremo Festival with the song “Sleep and Dream” that won the Premio della critica e della giuria di qualità. The jury was chaired by English composer Michael Nyman who expressed great admiration for Avion Travel in an article for the Financial Times.

One year later, Avion Travel started an innovative project: together with producer Arto Lindsay , father of New York’s new wave, they produced Cyrano, in which they mixed the harmony and the voice of Peppe Servillo with Lindsay’s typical guitars and electric keyboards.

In 2000 they were once again on the Sanremo Festival’s stage, where they won with the song “Sentimento”.

Between 2003 and 2007, the Orchestra ’s components engaged in individual experiences until returning together with a new formation: Peppe Servillo on vocals, Fausto Mesolella on guitar, Mimì Ciaramella on drums, Vittorio Remino on bass, and Flavio D’Ancona on keyboards. In 2009, Avion Travel published L’amico magico , a collection of compositions by Nino Rota revised with original arrangements.

Sadly, in 2017, Fausto Mesolella – historical guitarist of the group and prominent Italian musician, composer, and arranger – passed away, leaving behind a career rich in collaborations and awards.

In 2020, Avion Travel participated in La Musica dei Cieli festival , in collaboration with BeatMi. This was a special edition, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic: eight international artists were asked to perform in places of worship or in theatres in Milan and Lombardy. Their exhibitions, however, were live streamed on the website of Corriere della Sera .

Avion Travel performed with their newest formation, composed by Peppe Servillo (vocals), Peppe D’Argenzio (sax), Flavio D’Ancona (keyboards), Duilio Galioto (piano and keyboards), Ferruccio Spinetti (double bass), and Mimì Ciaramella (drums).

September “Chez Ponderosa”. Summer Is Not Over Yet

This September, Ponderosa ends the summer with a bang, welcoming autumn with a string of festivals and concerts

avion travel ondarock

Thirty-one days, sixteen artists artists and sixty-one concerts

Thirty-one. Sixteen. Sixty-one. Thirty-one for the days in the month of July. Sixteen for the number of artists from the Ponderosa team who will play live on tour throughout the course of this month. Sixty-one, for the number of concerts they will perform all around Italy. These are blessed numbers for live performers, who were hit hard by the lockdown and color-coded restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Districts [ edit ]

The city is divided by the River Oka into two major parts: the Upper city ( Verkhnyaya or Nagornaya chast ) on the hilly right side and the Lower city ( Nizhnyaya or Zarechnaya chast — what literally means "the part over the river") on the left bank of the river. The Upper city is the old historical part of Nizhny Novgorod, whereas the Lower city is larger, newer and consists of more industrial districts.

Understand [ edit ]

Map

History [ edit ]

The city was founded by Grand Duke George II of Russia in 1221 at the confluence of two most important rivers of his principality, the Volga and the Oka. Its name literally means Newtown the Lower , to distinguish it from the older Novgorod . A major stronghold for border protection, Nizhny Novgorod fortress took advantage of a natural moat formed by the two rivers.

Along with Moscow and Tver, Nizhny Novgorod was among several newly founded towns that escaped Mongol devastation on account of its insignificance and grew up into important centers of Russian political life during the period of Tatar yoke. For a short period of time it was the capital of the Suzdal Principality and competed with Moscow for the power in the region. However the competition with Moscow was lost and in 1392 the city was incorporated into Muscovy. Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was built in 1508-1511 (under supervision of the Italian fortress engineers) and became one of the strongest Russian citadels. There is a legend saying that the project was initially developed with participation of Leonardo da Vinci. However there is no documented proof of Leonardo's work for that project, the only thing the legend is based on is the striking resemblance of Leonardo's sketches and the actual Kremlin schemes. The fortress was strong enough to withstand Tatar sieges in 1520 and 1536.

In 1612, the so-called national militia , gathered by a local merchant Kuzma Minin and commanded by Knyaz Dmitry Pozharsky expelled the Polish troops from Moscow, thus putting an end to the Time of Troubles and establishing the rule of the Romanov dynasty.

In 1817, the Makaryev Monastery Fair, one of the liveliest in the world the 16th-18th centuries, was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod, which thereupon started to attract numerous visitors and by the mid-19th century it turned Nizhny Novgorod into trade capital of the Russian Empire.

Under the Soviet period, the trade connections of the city were abandoned and Nizhny Novgorod became an important industrial centre instead. During the communist time the city was closed to foreigners to safeguard the security of Soviet military research. The physicist and the Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov was exiled there during 1980-1986 to limit his contacts with foreigners.

Climate [ edit ]

The climate in the region is humid continental and it is similar to the climate in Moscow , although colder in winter, which lasts from late November until late March with a permanent snow cover.

By car [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod is situated on the M7/E30 road. The road is in decent condition, although with traffic it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours to drive to/from Moscow .

By boat [ edit ]

Turflot [dead link] , Infoflot , and many other companies operate multi-day river cruises down the Volga from early May to the end of September.

Many companies operate passenger boat service between Moscow and Astrakhan , with stops at most cities along the Volga River.

Get around [ edit ]

By foot [ edit ].

The city centre is compact and walkable. However, there are many inclines or steps from the river banks. The bridges are not pedestrian friendly since the sidewalk is very narrow and cars drive extremely fast close to the pedestrians.

By city rail [ edit ]

The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.

By bus and trolleybus [ edit ]

avion travel ondarock

As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.

The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:

  • The upper trolleybus network (it unites all three districts - Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky and Prioksky) with a turning circle on the Minin Square, near the Kremlin.
  • The lower trolleybus network (connects Kanavinsky, Moskovsky and Sormovsky districts)
  • The Avtozavod trolleybus network (connects all the distant sleeping microdistricts among themselves)

By tram [ edit ]

Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.

By marshrutka [ edit ]

Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.

The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.

Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.

All hotels and hostels offer free Wi-Fi and many have computer terminals. Almost all accept credit cards. Hotels and hostels will usually provide a visa invitation and registration for an additional fee.

Connect [ edit ]

Phone [ edit ].

For information on purchasing a SIM card in Russia, see Russia#Connect .

Note that Nizhny Novgorod is in the Volga region zone, and SIM cards purchased elsewhere, such as in Moscow or Saint Petersburg , may be subject to roaming charges.

There are payphones in the streets; however, you can only buy phone-cards in the post offices and in a few newspaper kiosks.

Internet [ edit ]

Free WiFi is available in most hotels, shopping malls, university buildings, restaurants and cafes, the airport as well as several metro stations. There is also free public WiFi on B. Pokrovskaya street.

Nizhniy Novgorod

Nizhniy Novgorod was founded in 1221 on the place of the ancient Slavonic settlement, on the junction of the Volga and the Oka Rivers. It was intended to be one of the main centers of the Suzdal principality. Nowadays Nizhniy Novgorod is the third-largest city in Russia with a population of more than 1,4 million.

The old part of Nizhniy Novgorod is of great historical and architectural value. Nizhniy Novgorod is included in the list of cities, which were recognized by UNESCO as the most valuable cultural monuments in the world. The most attractive sights of Nizhniy Novgorod are the Kremlin, the Rozhdestvensky cathedral, and other orthodox churches and temples.

History of Nizhny Novgorod

Foundation of nizhny novgorod.

During the military campaigns of the Russian princes against the Volga Bulgaria, the place where the Oka River flows into the Volga was used as a gathering point for the Murom and Suzdal troops. In 1220, Grand Duke Yuri Vsevolodovich (the grandson of Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, the founder of Moscow) conducted a successful campaign against the Bulgars. After it, he “decided to strengthen this important place for Rus” and founded a town at the mouth of the Oka.

It was named Novgorod, which literally means “new town”. Later, the adjective “nizhny” (“lower”) was added to the name of the town in the Russian annals. This was probably done in order to distinguish it from the town of Novgorod (present Veliky Novgorod) and other Novgorods that existed at that time.

The founding of Nizhny Novgorod was the beginning of an active expansion of Russian influence in the Mordovian lands. Two white-stone churches were built in the fortress, including the Cathedral of the Archangel (1227) - evidence of the special role that the town had in the system of lands of Vladimir-Suzdal Rus. However, the Mongol invasion stopped further development.

Information about Nizhny Novgorod of the 13th century is extremely scarce. But it is known that after the invasion it revived relatively quickly. Nizhny Novgorod is constantly mentioned in Russian chronicles as a major political and economic center of North-Eastern Rus and a spiritual center of Orthodoxy in the Volga region. The town was often the object of conflicts between Moscow and Tver.

In 1392, the Moscow prince Vasily I received a jarlig for the Nizhny Novgorod Principality and captured Nizhny Novgorod. The final annexation of Nizhny Novgorod to the possessions of Moscow took place in the late 1440s.

More Historical Facts…

Nizhny Novgorod in the 16th-18th centuries

Under Ivan III and Vasily III, the town played the role of a border post and was a gathering place for military campaigns against the Kazan Khanate. In 1508-1515, the stone kremlin was built. After the capture of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible, the border role of Nizhny Novgorod became insignificant. At the same time, Nizhny Novgorod became the center of trade between Russia and the East and a large shipbuilding center.

In September 1611, during the Time of Troubles, the Second People’s Militia was organized in Nizhny Novgorod to fight the Poles who were able to establish control over Moscow. The militia consisted of detachments of townspeople, peasants of the central and northern regions of the Tsardom of Russia. The leaders were the Nizhny Novgorod merchant Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky (the monument to them is installed on Red Square in Moscow). In October 1612, the militia was able to completely liberate Moscow.

In the 17th century, a schism occurred in the Orthodox Church under Patriarch Nikon. It led to the formation of numerous settlements of Old Believers in the vicinity of Nizhny Novgorod. In 1695, during his Azov campaign, Peter I arrived in Nizhny Novgorod. In 1719, as a result of his administrative-territorial reforms, the town became the center of a separate Nizhny Novgorod Governorate. In 1722, setting off on the Persian campaign, Nizhny Novgorod was again visited by Peter I. Here he celebrated his 50th birthday.

In 1767, Nizhny Novgorod was visited by Empress Catherine II. During her stay in the town, she met the famous local mechanic and inventor Ivan Kulibin. After her visit, a new regular town plan was approved. The first town theater was built in 1798. Later, it became known as Nikolaevsky, in honor of Emperor Nicholas I.

Nizhny Novgorod in the 19th century

At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, Nizhny Novgorod became a major scientific and cultural center of the Russian Empire. In 1811, the population of Nizhny Novgorod was about 14,400 people. In 1817, the Makaryev Fair, the largest fair of the Russian Empire, was moved to the village of Kunavino (one of the districts of today’s Nizhny Novgorod). Before that, it was organized every year near the Makaryevsky Monastery, which burned down a year earlier. From that time on, it began to be called the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. Thanks to it, the rapid economic development of the town and adjacent villages began.

After Emperor Nicholas I visited the town in 1834, the large-scale reconstruction of Nizhny Novgorod began. In 1847, a water supply system appeared in the town and the first fountain was built. Private buildings in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin were demolished and new administrative buildings appeared in their place. A lot of new buildings, streets, boulevards, and gardens were built.

In 1849, a large industrial enterprise was founded in the village of Sormovo (another district of today’s Nizhny Novgorod). Later, it became known as the Sormovo plant. It was producing river steamers, various railway cars, steam locomotives, and trams. Thanks to the plant, Sormovo soon turned into a large village of workers. In 1862, the construction of the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod railway was completed. In 1863, the population of the city was 41,500 people.

In 1896, the city hosted the All-Russian Trade and Industrial Exhibition. The radio receiver of the engineer A.S. Popov, the hyperboloid tower of the engineer V.G. Shukhov were demonstrated at the exhibition, as well as the first Russian car of the Frese and Yakovlev factories.

Nizhny Novgorod in the first half of the 20th century

In 1914, about 111,000 people lived in Nizhny Novgorod. In 1917, during the First World War, the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute was evacuated to this city, on the basis of which the Nizhny Novgorod Polytechnic Institute was created.

On October 7, 1932, Nizhny Novgorod was renamed Gorky due to the 40th anniversary of the literary and social activities of the writer Maxim Gorky. In 1933, the first permanent bridge across the Oka River was built. The railway bridge across the Volga was constructed too. Thanks to this, it became possible to go by rail through Gorky to the Urals and Siberia.

The 1930s were a period of rapid industrialization. In 1932, the largest industrial enterprise in the city was opened - the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ), an important object of the Soviet defense industry. In the 1930s-1940s, the city was even referred to as “Russian Detroit”. By 1939, the population of Nizhny Novgorod increased to about 644,000 people.

Every fourth resident of the Gorky region (about 822 thousand people) fought on the fronts of the Second World War. Of these, more than 350 thousand people did not return from the battlefields - they were killed, went missing or died from wounds in hospitals.

In June 1943, three large raids of German bombers were carried out on Gorky. The main target of air strikes was the Gorky Automobile Plant, which as a result was almost completely destroyed. It was rebuilt only in the middle of 1944. Over 500,000 wounded were treated in dozens of hospitals during the war years.

The city was an important center for the production of weapons. During the Second World War, every second Soviet car, every third tank and every fourth artillery piece were produced at Gorky’s plants. In total, about 38 thousand tanks, self-propelled guns, armored vehicles, 43 thousand mortars, 16 thousand aircraft, 22 submarines, 109 thousand cars, more than 85 thousand radio stations, as well as 101 thousand artillery pieces and 1,165 Katyusha multiple rocket launchers were produced in Gorky.

Nizhny Novgorod after the Second World War

In 1946, the first GAZ-M-20 “Pobeda” passenger car and the GAZ-51 truck left the assembly line of the Gorky Automobile Plant. In 1949, the construction of the monumental Chkalov Stairs connecting the Upper Volga and Lower Volga embankments was completed in the historic center of Nizhny Novgorod. On August 4, 1959, the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR “On the closure of the city of Gorky for visiting by foreigners” was issued. In 1962, the population of Gorky exceeded 1 million people.

On January 18, 1970, a radiation accident occurred at the Krasnoe Sormovo plant. During the construction of a nuclear submarine, an unauthorized launch of the reactor took place. After working at prohibitive power for about 10-15 seconds, it partially collapsed. Hundreds of workers were exposed to the radioactive release. In total, over one thousand people took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident and were exposed to radiation.

In 1985, a subway was opened in Gorky. In 1980-1986, Andrei Sakharov, a world famous nuclear physicist, Nobel laureate, and activist, was in exile in Gorky to prevent his contacts with foreigners. In the early 1990s, the “closed city” status was lifted and the city became accessible to foreigners. On October 22, 1990, Gorky was renamed back to Nizhny Novgorod. In 1991, the population of the city reached its maximum - 1,445,000 people.

At the end of the 20th century, the information technology sphere began to actively develop in the city. In the 2000s, a transport problem arose because of the insufficient carrying capacity of the Nizhny Novgorod bridges connecting the lower part of the city and the upper one.

In February 2012, the Nizhny Novgorod Volga Aerial Tramway was opened. This 3661-meter-long gondola lift cable car connected Nizhny Novgorod with the town of Bor. Its daily passenger traffic is about 5,000 people. In 2013, the city electric train was launched - an alternative to the subway line from Sormovo to Moskovsky railway station.

Nizhny Novgorod hosted 6 matches of the FIFA World Cup 2018 . A new stadium was built, the old river port was demolished, a new park and embankments were created. Large-scale restoration of old streets and buildings took place, new museums were opened, hotels were built, and parks were reconstructed.

Nizhny Novgorod - Features

Nizhny Novgorod is located about 425 km east of Moscow, at the confluence of the two largest waterways of the European part of Russia - the Volga and Oka rivers. The city is divided by the Oka into two parts. The length of Nizhny Novgorod along the Oka is 20 km, along the Volga - about 30 km.

The climate in Nizhny Novgorod is moderately continental, with cold, long winters and warm, relatively short summers. The average temperature in January is minus 8.9 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19.4 degrees Celsius.

A red deer is depicted on the coat of arms and flag of Nizhny Novgorod, which is a symbol of nobility, purity, life, wisdom, and justice. The City Day is celebrated on the 3rd Saturday in August.

In January 2019, Nizhny Novgorod was recognized as the best city in Russia in terms of quality of life. It took first place among Russian cities and 109th in the world in terms of quality of life. The rating was compiled by the site numbeo.com, which specializes in statistics on the cost of living and consumer prices in different countries of the world.

When compiling the rating, the purchasing power of the population, safety, health care, the cost of living, the ratio of real estate prices to the population’s income, traffic congestion, the level of environmental pollution, and climate were taken into account.

The main branches of the local industry are the production of cars and weapons, shipbuilding. Nizhny Novgorod is also one of the IT centers of Russia.

Nizhny Novgorod is a major transport hub. The city has a railway station, a river station, a cargo port, several berths for transshipment of goods. Strigino International Airport named after V.P. Chkalov offers regular flights to such cities as Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sochi, and a number of others.

Public transport in Nizhny Novgorod plays a very important role in ensuring the life of the city. At the same time, its work is hampered by the distribution of its population on the city’s territory, large daily migrations, a very high concentration of passenger traffic on the bridges across the Oka River, and the lack of an all-encompassing system of high-speed transport. There are municipal buses, fixed-route minibuses, trams, trolleybuses, the city train, and subway.

The tourist potential of Nizhny Novgorod is quite high. According to UNESCO, it is one of the most valuable historical cities in the world. In total, there are more than 600 unique historical, architectural and cultural monuments in Nizhny Novgorod, a variety of museums. The best time to visit Nizhny Novgorod is summer.

One of the alternative ways to visit Nizhny Novgorod is to take a river cruise along the Volga River. Travelers will find exciting excursions and meals in traditional Russian taverns. It will also be interesting to come during one of the many fairs or ethnographic festivals that are held in the city.

Main Attractions of Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin (1508-1515) - a fortress in the historic center of Nizhny Novgorod and its oldest part, the main architectural complex of the city located on the right high bank, at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers. To date, all 13 towers of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin have been preserved or have been restored. The thickness of the wall at the base reaches 5 meters. There are exhibitions in the towers of the fortress; a section of the wall is open for tourists to visit.

In the past, there were several churches on the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. Today, only the Archangel Michael Cathedral has survived, built no later than the middle of the 16th century and rebuilt in 1628-1631 - the oldest surviving building in the kremlin. There is the grave of Kuzma Minin inside it.

An excellent view of the Volga River and Strelka (the confluence of the Oka and Volga) opens from the walls of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. Here you can also see a collection of military equipment from the Second World War.

Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum - one of the oldest museums in Russia, the largest museum of fine arts in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The Governor’s Palace on the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin houses a permanent exhibition of Russian art and a collection of artistic silver.

In the House of the Merchant and Benefactor D.V. Sirotkin (Verkhnevolzhskaya Embankment, 3), an exposition of Western European art is presented and, separately, the painting by K.E. Makovsky “The appeal of Kuzma Minin to the citizens of Nizhny Novgorod” - one of the largest paintings on a historical theme in Russia (698x594 cm).

Chkalov Stairs (1943-1949) - a monumental staircase in the form of a figure eight in the historic center of Nizhny Novgorod. Connecting the Upper Volga (Verkhnevolzhskaya) and Lower Volga (Nizhnevolzhskaya) embankments, it is one of the longest stairs in Russia. It starts from the observation deck at the monument to Valery Chkalov (the famous Soviet pilot who made the first non-stop flight from the USSR to the USA via the North Pole), next to the St. George Tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street - the main street of Nizhny Novgorod built up with noble mansions of the past centuries. A large part of Bolshaya Pokrovskaya is reserved for the pedestrian zone and is analogous to the pedestrian Arbat Street in Moscow. There are a lot of historic houses, cafes, souvenir shops, boutiques, monuments, and sculptures here. The length of the street is over 2 km.

The building of the State Bank (Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, 26), resembling a medieval palace, is an outstanding architectural monument built in the Russian Revival style in 1911-1913. Tutorial: How to use the $100 travel credit on the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card

avion travel ondarock

Former HSBC World Elite Mastercard holder: $100 travel credit with RBC

Since the end of March 2024, HSBC World Elite ® Mastercard ® holders have had their card replaced by an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card . Certain benefits have been maintained, such as :

  • A travel credit of up to $200 for any hotel stay or car rental of $200 CAD or more, booked with Avion Rewards , until April 5, 2025 ;
  • No conversion fees for foreign currency transactions.

For this famous travel credit, you have to use it between April 4, 2024 and April 5, 2025 and it is distributed as follows:

  • $ 100 travel credit from HSBC / RBC transition ;
  • Any unused portion of your previous $100 HSBC credit.

So you have a travel credit opportunity of up to $200 for 2024-2025. If you don’t use it after April 6, 2025, it’s lost and there’s no way to get it back.

Here’s how to activate this offer and how it works.

How to book with Avion Rewards and your $100 travel credit

This travel credit applies only to former HSBC World Elite MD Mastercard ® holders who have had a product transfer to the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card following the transition from HSBC to RBC.

Log in to the Avion Rewards website. You will need to log in to your profile with your RBC Online Banking credentials.

Directly on the Homepage, you’ll find Avion Travel Credit , under Shop offers .

Click on Load offer .

That’s all ! You’ll automatically see that the travel credit is activated, highlighted in yellow.

Still can’t see the Travel Credit offer?

Check both on the Avion Rewards website and in the Avion Rewards mobile app (on the App Store or Google Play ).

If you still don’t see the Travel Credit option, call Customer Service at 1 800 769-2511 .

Then all you have to do is use your Avion Rewards travel credit. Here are the conditions:

  • Valid only for hotel reservations and car rentals
  • Payment must be $200 or more, including taxes and fees, charged to the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card that holds the travel credit.

In the Avion Rewards Travel section, select your destination and date.

Then choose the hotel you want.

When you confirm your reservation, you can also use your RBC Avion points to deduct part of the cost of your hotel stay!

The redemption rate for RBC Avion points via Avion Rewards is higher than usual: 1.5% (100 points = $1.50) instead of 1.0% (100 points = $1).

In fact, this is the special exchange rate only for former HSBC World Elite ® Mastercard ® cardholders, who have had their card replaced by an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card .

In this example, 4,002 points X 1.5 = $60.03 off the cost of the room.

After booking, you will see on your statement :

  • A deduction of 4,002 RBC Avion points;
  • A hotel purchase of $246.38 ;
  • An accumulation of 308 RBC Avion points for making this reservation.

The payment on the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card is over $200, so this will be enough to trigger the travel credit of up to $200.

Attention! If you cancel the hotel, Avion Rewards may charge you a cancellation fee in addition to the applicable taxes, according to the schedule in effect on its site. The fees are $10 per car rental and $10 per hotel reservation.

Bottom Line

This travel credit is available until April 2025 and is only available until April 5, 2025. It will not be renewed.

Don’t lose it, and take advantage of the opportunity to spoil yourself on your travels!

  • One account would have 3 product categories, which means you would earn 1 Avion point for every $3 spent on debit in-store and online using the enrolled account.

In the event that a ticket costs more than the allowed amount, the additional cost can be charged to your credit card or you can use your Avion points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD.

For example:

A flight from Toronto to Vancouver has a Maximum Ticket Price of $750 CAD. If the base fare of the flight you select is $825 CAD, you can charge the excess amount of $75 ($825-$750=$75), (plus taxes and fees) to your credit card or redeem points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD (75x100= 7500 points)

RBC Avion Visa cardholders who are redeeming Avion points for flights from the Air Travel Redemption Schedule can use their credit card to pay for taxes and fees and any amount above the Maximum Ticket Price.

RBC Avion Visa cardholders can also purchase additional points to use towards flights on the Air Travel Redemption Schedule and must have at least half of the required points for their booking in order to purchase additional points. The minimum amount of points to purchase is 1,000 and maximum is 15,000, and every 1,000 points costs $40 CAD plus applicable taxes.

Yes. There are three ways to redeem Avion points for first or business class seats.

Select either first class or business class before searching for flights. Then, redeem the required number of Avion points for the destination of your choice, up to the Maximum Ticket Price as indicated in the Air Travel Redemption Schedule. The Maximum Ticket Price excludes any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees. Finally, pay for the price difference between the Maximum Ticket Price and the total price of your first or business class ticket by redeeming your points at the rate of 100 points = $1.00 CAD.

Redeeming for a flight from Toronto to Vancouver from the Air Travel Redemption Schedule requires 35,000 points for a Maximum Ticket Price of $750 CAD. The Maximum Ticket Price excludes any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees. If the cost of the flight you select in business class is $1,000 CAD, you can pay for the price difference of $250 by redeeming 25,000 additional points (100 points = $1 CAD). In total, you would need to redeem 60,000 points.

If you are an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege for Private Banking, RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege, RBC Avion Visa Infinite Business or RBC Commercial Avion Visa cardholder, you can pay for the entire price of a first or business class ticket (including any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees) by redeeming your points at the rate of 100 points = $2.00 CAD.

If a flight from Toronto to Vancouver in first class costs $3,200 CAD (including any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees), you would need to redeem 160,000 Avion points (100 points = $2 CAD)

Convert your Avion points to WestJet dollars or to British Airways Avios, American Airlines AAdvantage Miles or Cathay Pacific Asia Miles. Converting your Avion points gives you the flexibility to redeem for rewards and benefits these programs offer, including for first or business class seats. Once converted, points cannot be transferred or converted back to Avion points.

All travel reservations made over the phone will be subject to a $30 booking fee per ticket or hotel booking.

No, you can only redeem Avion points to pay down your RBC points-earning credit card balance through Pay Credit Card with Points.

Eligible Avion Rewards members with an RBC points-earning credit card can use their points to redeem towards eligible transactions as a statement credit.

Note: Clients must have an RBC points-earning credit card in order to Pay Back Purchases with Points and RBC Commercial Avion Visa is not eligible.

Here’s how to Pay Back Purchases with Avion points:

  • Sign in to RBC Mobile or Online Banking
  • Go to credit card transaction details page
  • Double click on any particular transaction
  • There will be transaction details like purchase date, merchant name etc. and a Pay with Points button
  • Click on the Pay with Points button and go to the Pay Back with Points page where transaction details appear along with the current full points balance that is available
  • Choose any amount of points to use to “offset” all or even just a portion of the purchase amount
  • Redemption is completed with a confirmation and Avion points will be deducted from account balance right away
  • A credit will be posted on credit card account within 1-2 business days with a description of “rewards redemption – merchant name”

Note: This feature is only available in the RBC Mobile app.

Pay In-Store with Points is a capability available in the RBC Launch app that allows you to redeem your Avion points for purchases completed in stores with an eligible mobile wallet (iOS and Samsung).

Any purchase transactions between $1 and $250 CAD completed through an eligible mobile wallet using your device qualify.

  • Make sure you’ve downloaded the RBC Launch app. Sign in with your credentials and enable push notifications. There are 2 ways to redeem:
  • Sign in to the RBC Launch app. Select the transaction banner at the top, and redeem points towards your last purchase with Apple Pay.
  • Turn on push notifications for the RBC Launch app. We’ll let you know when your purchase is eligible to redeem points.
  • Get started by selecting the Samsung Pay app icon or by swiping up from the bottom of your screen.
  • Select Pay with Avion Rewards Points and choose how many points you’d like to use towards your purchase.
  • Tap to pay, and your purchase is complete.

The full purchase amount will be charged to your credit card for your purchase and a statement credit for the points redemption will be applied on your credit card account within 2-3 business days from the date of your purchase. Your statement credit will indicate which merchant your transaction was made with.

You will still continue to earn Avion points for the full purchase amount even when you redeem points for that purchase.

All redemptions are final and cannot be cancelled or reversed once submitted. The points redeemed will remain as a statement credit towards your account balance even when you return or refund your purchase. The number of points redeemed may vary during promotional campaigns.

Note: Push notifications may display account information, such as account balance and transaction information, on the screen of your device in a locked state and in your device notification center. You can disable push notifications in your notification settings.

Yes. If you’re an eligible Avion Rewards member and a member of the Hudson’s Bay Rewards program, you can:

  • Convert your Avion points to Hudson’s Bay Rewards points.
  • Turn on auto-convert to have your Hudson’s Bay Rewards points automatically converted to Avion points.

With auto-convert, your current Hudson’s Bay Rewards points will automatically be converted to Avion points on an ongoing basis, until you turn it off. When auto-convert is turned on, you won’t be able to convert Avion points to Hudson’s Bay Rewards points.

You must be a member of the Hudson’s Bay Rewards program in order to complete either of the conversions above, and the Hudson’s Bay Rewards account must be in the same name as your RBC Royal Bank credit card account.

For one-time conversions, a minimum of 500 Avion points must be converted and they can only be converted in increments of 2 Avion points thereafter. For auto-convert, your Hudson’s Bay Rewards points will be automatically converted to Avion points when you have a minimum of 40 points in your Hudson’s Bay Rewards account and in increments of 4 Hudson’s Bay Rewards points thereafter.

Note: At this time, RBC ION Visa and RBC ION+ Visa cardholders are not eligible to convert their Avion points to the Hudson Bay Rewards Program and vice versa.

To turn on auto-convert:

  • Sign in to Avion Rewards
  • Select Redeem in the top navigation or menu.
  • Select Hudson’s Bay Rewards from the Convert Points menu.
  • Select the tab, Auto-convert your Hudson’s Bay Rewards points, and follow the steps.

This benefit is only available to Avion Elite and Avion Premium members with an eligible RBC credit card. At this time, RBC ION Visa and RBC ION+ Visa cardholders are not eligible to convert their Avion points to the Hudson Bay Rewards Program and vice versa.

No, we don’t currently offer this option. You can only convert Avion points to Hudson’s Bay Rewards as a one-time conversion with a minimum of 500 Avion points.

Transfer points gives you the ability to consolidate your Avion points where you need them most. Through a simple set of steps, you can transfer Avion points from one points account to another. Check out the individual perks and benefits of your points-earning account to see where you can maximize the value of your points.

Note: Points are transferred on a 1:1 basis, meaning the number of points you transfer will not change from one points-earning product to another. In addition, there is no fee to transfer points.

If you have more than one Avion points account, you can transfer points between most accounts that appear on your profile. Transfers are only eligible between points accounts that you own. Points earned by an authorized credit card user, belong to the primary credit cardholder.

Yes, you can combine the Avion points you have earned using your eligible personal deposit account (by making in-store or online debit purchases) with the Avion points you have earned with your personal, and business credit card and vice versa.

Here’s how to combine your Avion points between points-earning products:

  • Log in to avionrewards.com and click the "Transfer" menu.
  • On the landing page, select "Transfer Now” in the “Transfer Points” option. You can transfer points between the products shown in the drop-down menu.
  • Within "Transfer Points", you can set up a one-time transfer or an auto-transfer so that all the points you earn with your points-earning product(s) can be pooled to one points account, making it easy to keep track of your points in one place and get you closer to your redemption goals.

No. There is no minimum or maximum. You can transfer Avion points between accounts as you need, with no limits. Also, if you realize that you have transferred too many points in a points account, or into the wrong points account, you can always transfer them back, with no fees.

When you transfer Avion points from your U.S. Dollar Visa Gold points account to another Avion points account (non U.S. dollar), the points will be transferred at a rate of 1:1.

No. Avion points transfers are final, and cannot be reversed or cancelled. However, if you choose the wrong points account for your transfer or need the points back into the account you transferred from, you can just set up another transfer. Don’t worry, you will not pay any fees, or experience any loss in the transfer.

Yes. If your business banking profile is linked to your personal banking profile, you can transfer points to or from your business rewards account online.

If your business banking profile is not linked to your personal banking profile, you can transfer points from or to your business rewards account by calling us at 1-800-769-2512 .

Avion points will be awarded based on how many points you have earned up until the day you opt out. As long as your personal deposit account remains open (and in good standing?), you will not lose the points you have previously earned when you opt out of the Value Program .

If you close a personal deposit account that is enrolled in the Value Program:

  • The monthly fee rebate 1 you receive will be based on the number of eligible product categories you had and the specific account activities you completed (pre-authorized payment, direct deposit, eligible bill payment) in the previous calendar month. If you close your account on a day other than the last day of the calendar month, your monthly fee rebate will be pro-rated and paid on your next statement cycle date.
  • Avion points are earned up until the day the account is closed and are based on debit purchases made from the first day of the calendar month through the date you close your account.

After closing your personal deposit account, you have 12 months to use your Avion points, which can be redeemed by calling the RBC Advice Centre at 1-800-769-2512 .

Yes you can. You will be able to redeem Avion points you have earned (based on the rates associated with the closed account) for up to 12 months after closure. You can also transfer your points to any active points account you have and redeem from there. If you are not ready to redeem your points, be sure to transfer them to an active account before your 12 months are up.

Through the Value Program , Avion points are reported monthly and take into account all in-store and online debit purchases from, and returns to, an enrolled personal deposit account.

For example, say you purchase a $300 blender with your debit card in December and received your Avion points. In January, you return the blender and get a $300 credit to your personal deposit account, but you also make $500 in debit purchases. For January, you would be awarded points for $200 of your debit spend ($500 in debit purchases minus the $300 return). Alternatively, if in January you do not make any debit purchases and only return the $300 blender, you would not be awarded any points for January and 300 points will be removed from your points account.

No, not at this time. You must withdraw the full amount in your cash account, once it is $15 or over.

Cash back on eligible offers is issued in Canadian currency. For foreign currency transactions, the cash back earned may be subject to foreign exchange fees, foreign currency fluctuations or other factors that may influence the amount of cash back earned when calculating the Canadian dollar equivalent amount.

For cash back offers, there is a holding period before it is moved to an earned status and available to be cashed out by a member. This holding period varies by merchant as it is dependent upon each merchants return window plus associated processing time which can typically be up to 120 days after the original transaction date. During this period cash back will be reflected in your activity dashboard and can be found under the Pending tab. Once the holding period is complete it will move to the Earned tab within the activity dashboard.

As an Avion Select member, you can link and earn points and cash back at over 230 financial institutions.

  • You made the purchase through another loyalty program. You cannot receive cash back through two programs simultaneously
  • You made the purchase directly on the merchant’s site without clicking on “Load Offer” in Avion Rewards first. Offers are only activated when you click through from Avion Rewards
