Brain wave study explains why a DMT trip is like entering an alternate reality

Scientists can finally explain the "breakthrough" experience.

mind trips dravus

DMT, short for N,N-dimethyltryptamine, has such a powerful effect on the human brain that it’s called the “God molecule”. It’s famous for inducing a transcendent psychological experience and some liken their DMT trips to a near-death experience , complete with encounters with mystical beings or entry into an all-encompassing “new realm” .

Now, scientists might finally know why the chemical substance can push people into seemingly new cognitive dimensions. According to research published Tuesday in Scientific Reports , that experience likely stems from DMT’s ability to create very specific patterns of brain waves.

"People are engaged in these alternate dimensions.”

These changes in our brain activity may help us create an extremely realistic new reality that exists entirely inside the mind, explains Christopher Timmermann , a Ph.D. student at Imperial College London and the study’s first author.

“We found neural signatures related to states of consciousness in which people feel completely immersed in simulated alternate realities,” he tells Inverse

“People are engaged in these alternate dimensions, which feel incredibly real and meaningful, they feel they engage with beings and entities that communicate with them, [and] they have strong emotional reactions and effects in their bodies.”

How DMT creates “new realms”

This study is based on a small sample of 13 adults who were given a DMT dose that resulted in about a 20-minute trip. When the experience peaked about two to three minutes in, the subjects reported feeling as if they entered a “different reality or dimension.”

In turn, they saw geometric patterns, felt reported “unusual bodily sensations.” They drew pictures that look like this:

DMT drawing

A drawing made by a study participant while they were on DMT.

While they were experiencing that, scientists took EEG readings of their brain activity. Ultimately, the team was able to boil down the DMT experience into interactions between four different types of brain waves that are usually seen during states of consciousness, like sleeping or waking. They include:

  • Delta waves: the lowest frequency wave, common during deep sleep
  • Theta waves: found during earlier sleep stages
  • Alpha waves: found during relaxed states like meditation
  • Beta waves, common during typical wakefulness

Timmermann explains that generally speaking, the team saw large decreases in higher frequency alpha waves and big increases in the low-frequency delta and theta waves while their participants were on DMT. These effects were strongly related to the visual imagery, or hallucinations, induced by the compound.

"These effects are similar to what we see when people are dreaming.”

That’s particularly intriguing to Timmermann because “these effects are similar to what we see when people are dreaming.”

DMT brain waves

Changes in brain wave activity during a 20 minute DMT experience.

Interstingly, they also found that specific combinations of waves during the trip could explain the different emotional and physical sensations of the DMT experience. The visual effects seemed most closely tied to the increases in theta waves, and decrease in alpha waves. The bodily effects were associated with decreases in beta waves, and the emotional effects were associated with increase in “signal diversity” — basically chaotic or unpredictable patterns of brainwaves.

These physical and emotional components are all part of the traditional DMT experience. But Timmermann’s data also points to what happens at the exact moment when people feel that they’re “breaking through” and are on the verge of a far more intense experience.

What happens during the “breakthrough experience?”

The breakthrough experience is usually described as truly falling into another realm. Artists who try to depict it ( often unsuccessfully , some note) draw scenes like this :

Timmermann’s data suggests that the transition to breakthrough experience could be defined by a “collapse” of the alpha and beta waves and the beginning of a new type of rhythm that’s dominated by theta and delta waves.

Once that happens, the experience is underpinned by changes in three major types of brain activity that define the social, emotional and bodily components of the DMT experience: A decrease in alpha waves, an increase in theta waves, and a spike in “signal diversity.” Each of these changes help explain why it feels so all-encompassing.

In part, it’s because of a “massive” drop off in alpha waves. When people aren’t on DMT, this sort of drop-off happens when one opens their eyes and engages with the external world. Strangely enough, the DMT subjects had their eyes closed the whole time — but their brains acted like their eyes were open.

The increase in theta waves is actually similar to what happens during the vivid dreams that occur during REM sleep, while the increase in “signal diversity” possibly accounts for the “rich and unusual experiences people have.”

This is only a small study on 13 people, and there’s still a lot of unanswered questions about the DMT experience. But ultimately, Timmermann hopes that this kind of research could be a better way to understand consciousness in general.

“Understanding how we are able to construct such elaborate experiences while being detached from normal waking consciousness is absolutely necessary if we want to have a comprehensive view of what human consciousness is,” he argues.

From that standpoint, DMT could be one way to illuminate just how our consciousness works. For now, this work points to how a hallucinating brain can construct a vibrant world entirely inside the mind.

Studying transitions in and out of the altered state of consciousness caused by intravenous (IV) N,N- Dimethyltryptamine (DMT - a fast-acting tryptamine psychedelic) offers a safe and powerful means of advancing knowledge on the neurobiology of conscious states. Here we sought to investigate the effects of IV DMT on the power spectrum and signal diversity of human brain activity (6 female, 7 male) recorded via multivariate EEG, and plot relationships between subjective experience, brain activity and drug plasma concentrations across time. Compared with placebo, DMT markedly reduced oscillatory power in the alpha and beta bands and robustly increased spontaneous signal diversity. Time-referenced and neurophenomenological analyses revealed close relationships between changes in various aspects of subjective experience and changes in brain activity. Importantly, the emergence of oscillatory activity within the delta and theta frequency bands was found to correlate with the peak of the experience - particularly its eyes-closed visual component. These findings highlight marked changes in oscillatory activity and signal diversity with DMT that parallel broad and specific components of the subjective experience, thus advancing our understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of immersive states of consciousness.

Mindtrip Raises $12 Million in Tough Funding Environment for AI Trip Planners

Justin Dawes

Justin Dawes , Skift

September 17th, 2024 at 9:00 AM EDT

There’s no question that travel search is changing with generative AI, but the jury is out on who the big winners will be. Mindtrip is jumping onboard as travel companies attempt to seize the opportunity.

Justin Dawes

  • What are some recent features Mindtrip has added to its platform?
  • Who are the key founders of Mindtrip and what are their backgrounds?
  • What sets Mindtrip apart from other AI trip planners?

Select a question above or ask something else

  • Mindtrip raised $12 million in its second round of startup funding.
  • The company was founded by a team with significant experience in tech and ecommerce.
  • Mindtrip aims to generate revenue through travel bookings and partnerships with destination marketing organizations.

Mindtrip, an AI-powered trip planning and booking website, has raised $12 million in a challenging funding environment. Founded in 2023 by a team with extensive tech and ecommerce backgrounds, the San Francisco-based startup aims to revolutionize travel planning. The company plans to generate revenue through travel bookings and partnerships with destination marketing organizations, while continuing to develop and enhance its platform.

Mindtrip , a trip planning and booking website powered by generative AI, said Tuesday that it has raised $12 million, its second round of startup funding.

AI trip planners of various qualities have been popping up since OpenAI released the first generative AI model in late 2022. Many of those planners have already failed , and few have raised money.

And yet Mindtrip has raised two rounds. The company raised $7 million in late 2023 and launched a beta version of its product in May 2024. It has been making updates since then, including a new group chat and planning capability released Tuesday. It’s also developing a mobile app.

The San Francisco-based startup was founded in 2023 by 12 people, including Andy Moss and Trey Matteson, who co-founded vehicle ecommerce platform Roadster and sold it to CDK Global for $360 million in 2021. The founding team also includes Garrick Toubassi, who previously led the Gmail engineering team at Google.

Against the Odds

The funding gives Mindtrip two to three years of runway to continue building the product, according to Moss, CEO of Mindtrip.

The company will need to use that time wisely at it navigates the many variables against it. Generative AI is still a work in progress, though that tech is improving quickly. Mindtrip also has a lot of competition from small and large players.

Expedia , Google , Tripadvisor, and many others have released beta versions of AI trip planners over the last several months. None of them, however, likely are strong enough yet to change the way travelers search and book.

Moss believes that being a startup could be beneficial.

“It’s just very difficult for a very large company to change the interface that their users are very used to. Most of the products and engineering talent at a large company is maintaining what’s already there, as opposed to building brand new stuff. That’s why startups typically do well in these sorts of markets,” he said.

And the venture capital — something most of Mindtrip’s small competitors don’t have — allows the startup to build a thorough product from the ground up with an experienced team, he said.

“There’s no part of the customer journey that we’re not trying to address,” Moss said.

The company’s two lead investors are Costanoa Ventures and Forerunner Ventures. Greg Sands, founder and managing partner of Costanoa Ventures, believes the winning AI trip planner will be one that makes a similar impression on users as the first time they used Uber or Airbnb. Sands, who had invested in Roadster, said feedback from travel industry experts leads him to believe that Mindtrip is on the right track.

“The fundamental job right now is to delight consumers,” Sands told Skift earlier this year.

Making Money

One of the top hurdles now is to attract users, Moss said. He declined to share specifics about early traction but said the number of active monthly users is in the six figures.

The company plans to establish more than one line of revenue. For example, Mindtrip would earn a commission when consumers book travel through the website.

The company later plans to provide a consumer-facing AI tool for destination marketing organizations and other travel companies. It would essentially allow those companies to embed Mindtrip onto their own websites, integrating information related to those specific businesses. The company is working with six organizations to pilot a product.

“We’re just starting to put all the pieces in place to scale both parts of the business,” Moss said.

The good thing for Mindtrip is that all of the company’s competitors are working from a relatively level playing field — for now.

“It’s not often the world completely changes. AI is one of those moments,” he said.

There is so much to see and do and I feel we did, with our wonderful guides a great job beginning to see all.

The St. Regis Hotel was so warm and friendly! Food was excellent and so convenient to the Kremlin, Bolshoi Theater, St. Basil's, etc. Thank you!

It was a great experience - Treasures of Two Capitals (5 star), June 2017

It was a great experience. The guides were knowledgeable and spot on time. Especially the guide in St. Petersburg seemed to get us to places with great timing. We beat the majority of crowds. Maybe that’s partly a result of being a small group, being that we didn’t have to wait for stragglers. The weather cooperated and we didn’t get caught in any rain storms.

Everybody in our group got along perfectly. We were all experienced travelers and shared information on places we’d been to. The ladies are now sharing pictures of our trip to Russia via email.

3 Days in Saint Petersburg Russia: My Perfect 3-Day Saint Petersburg Itinerary

Saint Petersburg is one of Russia’s largest and most exciting cities, offering visitors thousands of things to do, including museums, palaces, beautiful parks, historical sites, and world-class theatre. Discover all the sights and delights the cultural capital of Russia has to offer with my 3-day Saint Petersburg itinerary.

With all these options, planning a trip to Saint Petersburg can be a bit overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors. I’ve put together a recommended 3-day Saint Petersburg itinerary that will help you see the city’s highlights if you have at least 3 days in Saint Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg is a budget-friendly destination that promises historical immersion and exquisite architecture at half the price of that in Western Europe.

My suggested 3-day itinerary has you visiting all the city’s most famous attractions (e.g., the atmospheric Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, the Winter Palace, the Hermitage Museum) as well as some of the city’s lesser-known attractions. In addition to the 3-day itinerary, I also provide tips on how to get around Saint Petersburg and tips on where to eat and stay during your 3 days in Saint Petersburg.

If you’re headed to Russia’s capital city, take a look at my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow .

The 3 day itinerary in st petersburg, russia

3 Days in Saint Petersburg Itinerary | The Perfect 72 Hours in Saint Petersburg

Saint petersburg, russia in 3 days – day 1.

Start with an early morning walk along Nevsky Avenue from Vosstaniya Square to the Admiralty Building. The first point of interest is the Hero-City obelisk next to the Moskovsky railway station commemorating the victory of Soviet people over the Nazis. The lovely views will put you in a good mood for the rest of the day. Stop for a nice cappuccino at one of the bars near Gostiny Dvor, a Russian alternative to the French Passage. Enjoy the sight of the old Anichkov Bridge, the oldest bridge over the Fontanka River.

st petersburg itinerary 3 days

Then make your way to the neoclassical St. Isaac’s Cathedral. It’s a good idea to climb to its colonnade’s observation platform. It means that you get a panoramic view of the St.Petersburg and the refreshing breeze in the summertime.

In St. Isaac’s Cathedral you can admire the interior that boasts more than 300 paintings, mosaics, sculptures, various kinds of precious stones and gilding. The walls of the Cathedral are faced with fine Italian and Russian varieties of marble and other stones: malachite, lapis lazuli, porphyry. St. Isaac’s Cathedral, for example, is otherwise known as the “Museum of stones”.

What Motivates People to Travel

Just a stone’s throw away from St. Isaac’s Cathedral you’ll find the Winter Palace and the Hermitage Museum. These are the most famous attractions in St. Petersburg and you simply can’t miss them. Spend some time taking awesome pictures of the Palace Square, then continue your walking tour of St Petersburg toward the Spit of Vasilevsky Island.

best time to visit st petersburg

Here you’ll find red Rostral Columns decorated with bronze anchors and four pairs of bronze ship prows. Ah, don’t miss out on visiting the KunstKamera, arguably the weirdest museum in the world.

End your first day in Saint Petersburg exploring the Peter and Paul Fortress. The mighty that never served its purpose to protect the city sits on a narrow strip of land at the mouth of the Neva river. Hare’s island is home to a plethora of various buildings, museums, and exhibitions both permanent and temporary. Although, these do not always reflect the specific history of the fortress itself.

Be sure to make your way down to the Neva River. Here you can have a take a leisurely stroll along the mighty granite walls and mingle with locals.

Saint Petersburg, Russia in 3 days – Day 2

First things first. You can’t visit Saint Petersburg without seeing the real Dutch and Flemish Painting in the Hermitage Museum. It’s worth the trip but book ahead, and allow yourself at least two hours. A good place for a coffee and a pastry is Hermitage Cafe in the General Staff building. Pop over to the Field of Mars to have a look at ordinary people spending their leisure time and the first eternal flame in the country.

non touristy things to do in st petersburg

If you are a history buff, visit the Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad. a former monastery filled with atmospheric early Renaissance frescoes painted by Fra’ Angelico. The permanent exhibition features the history of the city during the 900-day Blockade, which lasted from 8 September 1941 to 17 January 1944. It goes without saying that this is a very sobering, and unique place to visit for thought-provoking entertainment.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Russia

Then walk along Moika Embankment towards Chizhyk Pyzhik sculpture (pine siskin), and from there take a stroll through the Michael Garden (Mikhaylovskiy Sad) to reach the Church of the Savior on Blood. Admire the ornate cupolas of the Cathedral, otherwise known as ‘Spas Na Krovi‘. It was built on the very spot that Alexander II had been assassinated on March 1, 1881. You can also admire the Cathedral’s interior from inside – walls and ceilings are completely covered in intricate mosaics and paintings.

Nevsky Avenue and adjoining Griboyedov Canal are full of lovely little shops to browse in. At the intersection of Griboyedov Canal and Nevsky Avenue, you’ll find several cozy restaurants offering a wide array of dining options.

best way to visit st petersburg

In the afternoon, head along to the Alexander Garden to see the Monuments and the Bronze Horseman; a monument to Peter the Great) next to the Admiralty building. From there take a subway ride (Admiralteyskaya station) and go see the impressive Narva Triumphal Arch. Definitely one of the most underrated attractions in St Petersburg.

This remarkable roman arch is made of bricks and covered with copper sheets for the facades. There are four columns on the front side, two on each side of the arch, chariot on the top and the two statues of ancient Russian warriors. The square around the arch is a lively spot in a summer evening too.

Saint Petersburg 3-day itinerary – Day 3

While St Petersburg is a perfectly walkable city, the main streets can get quite crowded in high-season. However, there is always an escape to one of the royal suburbs.

Spend the third day of your 3 days in St. Petersburg taking day trips to Peterhof and/or Pushkin.

Peterhof has many intricate fountains, the highlight being the Samson Fountain with the lion. The sculpture celebrates the Russian victories, especially the victory over Sweden, whose coat-of-arms contains the figure of a lion. Peterhof Park and gardens are a vast area behind the palace where you can spend a few hours to escape the crowds.

Should you choose, I recommend heading to Peterhof in summer. The former royal residence of Peterhof sits some 30 minutes by hydrofoil from the Hermitage Embankment. Peterhof consists of a series of palaces, gardens and the Grand Cascade that makes the city an extremely popular destination in summer. If you are here during the summer, check out the palace’s many fountains. Remember, the fountains are only operational from May to September and aren’t functioning during winter. Peterhof is most quickly accessible via minibus from a St. Petersburg suburb, but most easily accessible via direct train from Baltiysky railway station.

places to visit near st petersburg russia

Alternatively, sightseers and culture seekers can visit Pushkin – home to a Catherine Palace and the famous Amber Room. I actually visited both Pushkin and Peterhof and it’s nearly impossible to choose between these two amazing places. Keep in mind, during the public holidays both cities can be quite packed with locals. So you may want to visit the Catherine Palace in autumn or winter when it’s much less crowded.

Where to Stay in Saint Petersburg

You’ll be spoiled for choice among Saint Petersburg accommodation options. The city offers everything from luxurious hotels with their own rooftop bars to more affordable budget hotels that put you within 25 minutes of Moskovskaya railway station. No matter what your budget, you’ll be able to find the perfect St Petersburg hostel within easy reach of downtown. Check Railway Capsules . If you’re looking for someplace a bit nicer, I can personally recommend the WYNWOOD Hotel .

St. Petersburg Russia Tours

St. Petersburg is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It was built on a collection of islands where the Neva River meets the Gulf of Finland and is divided further by a system of canals earning the city the name the Venice of the North. St. Petersburg was referred to as Peter the Great’s Window to the West because the great Tsar and reformer Peter the First designed the city to be Russia’s most European. The European feeling of the city is as true today as it was during the early 1700s. The embankments and boulevards are full of 18th and 19th century palaces of the nobility giving St. Petersburg an almost fairytale atmosphere. The historical city center is huge and dominated by the Winter Palace (former residence of the Tsars) which now houses the world famous Hermitage Museum . St. Petersburg Russia indeed is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities on earth. Our company is based in St. Petersburg, Russia allowing us to offer the widest variety of St. Petersburg Russia tours and excursions available on the Internet. All of our tours are designed so that our guests experience maximum enjoyment and become immersed in the culture and history of this great, Russian city. St. Petersburg in the 19th century

St. Petersburg – a Historical Gem

The city has witnessed some of the most dramatic and important moments in Russian history since its founding in 1703 by Peter the Great , making the city especially important for curious travelers coming to Russia. St. Petersburg was the scene of the Decembrist uprising , the famous court of Tsarina Catherine the Great , the assassination of Tsar Pavel and Alexander II and the home of Rasputin , the Siberian mystic. The last Tsar, Nicholas the II, was overthrown at the Winter Palace and the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and Lenin brought communism to power here. After the revolution, the name of the city was changed to Leningrad. During the Second World War, Leningrad was under siege and fully blockaded by the Nazis for almost 3 years, resulting in the deaths of up to 1.5 million of its citizens. Our St. Petersburg tours take you to the places associated with many of these events and more.
