Spectator video has emerged of Matt Brammeier's (MTN-Qhubeka) high-speed crash at the Tour of Utah on Saturday, that left the Irish pro with serious injuries.

Brammeier was chasing back to the peloton on the descent of Guardsman's Pass on stage six of the American race, when he appears to lose control at high-speed and fly directly into a service car which is taking a left-hand turn. The 30-year-old was left with fractures to his ribs and pelvis , as well as internal injuries.

Other riders in the video are seen taking it cautiously on the fast descent with Brammeier appearing much quicker into shot as he reaches the bend, and is then motionless as members of the public attend to him on the roadside and attempt to slow oncoming riders and vehicles.

Two riders behind then suffer incidents of their own after a motorcycle slows down on the bend  and causes them to run into the side of it.

MTN-Qhubeka team medic Dr Jarrad van Zuydam later commented on Brammeier's condition in a statement:

“Matt Brammeier was involved in a high speed collision with a vehicle during the queen stage of the Tour of Utah. Thankfully, Matt has suffered no head, neck or spinal injuries and is currently stable in hospital. His musculoskeletal injuries are significant, however.

“He suffered rib fractures on both sides as well as a small pneumothorax. He also has fractures of the sacral and pelvic bones. Matt is unlikely to require surgery but will need some time to recover from his injuries.”

George Hincapie’s national title defense in doubt after Tour of Utah crash

A crash in thursday second stage of the tour of utah has bmc's george hincapie worried he won't be able to defend his pro road title in his hometown next month..

2010 Tour of Utah, stage 2. George Hincapie crash

U.S. national road champion George Hincapie took a trip to the tarmac Thursday at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah and his run at a fourth national championship may be in doubt.

According to a release from BMC Racing, Hincapie “needed 18 stitches to close a cut on his right knee and sustained abrasions to his right shoulder and face.” He did not suffer any fractures in the crash.

Hincapie, riding his first Tour of Utah as preparation for what were to be his last events of the season, two ProTour races in Canada and the national championships in September, crashed hard in a shallow canyon a few miles past the day’s first sprint point.

The four-time Tour de France stage winner swerved to avoid another rider when he hit gravel on the side of the road and washed out. “I rode into a bit of gravel and my front wheel went out,” Hincapie said. “Crashing is never a good thing. I’m definitely concerned with my knee and how much time I’m going to have to take off the bike. It’s not a good time for that.”

Hincapie lay on the ground at the edge of the road, clutching his knee as the caravan drove past.

Stage winner and former teammate Levi Leipheimer (Mellow Johnny’s) was behind Hincapie when the crash occurred. “I think what happened is the side of the road looked like pavement but it was actually gravel,” said Leipheimer. “He didn’t notice and his front wheel slid out. I don’t know how he’s doing, but I hope he’s OK.”

Leipheimer was nearly as surprised as he was disappointed to see his friend abandon the race with three days remaining. “Yeah and I tell you what, that’s a very rare thing to see,” said Leipheimer. “I haven’t seen him crash very much in the 15 years I’ve been around.”

The laceration will keep Hincapie off the bike for 10 days. Team doctor Max Testa will watch the rider in Salt Lake City over the next day and said that the crash may put Hincapie’s hometown title defense in doubt. “We’ll monitor him closely the next 24 hours and then make a plan for his recovery,” Testa said. “We can’t make a determination yet whether he’ll be able to defend his title.”

BMC team director John Lelangue hoped Hincapie would be ready for the Canadian races, but pointed to the national championships in Greenville, South Carolina , as the top priority. “We’ll see how it goes in the coming days and if he has the possibility to race the two ProTour races in Canada, just to get him two more racing days and more training,” Lelangue said. “I hope to see him at 100 percent for nationals because it’s a special race, he’s the defending champion and he’s at home.”

The USA Cycling Professional National Championships take place September 18-19 in Greenville, South Carolina. Hincapie is the three-time and defending champion.

Five riders collide with utility at 1000 Warriors Race

US organiser calls for co-operation to improve safety

A five-rider crash on a high-speed descent at the 1000 Warriors Race has left three people in hospital, one with critical injuries. The race on Saturday was held in conjunction with the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah.

The five riders included Dave Collins, Steve Beck, Mike Skousen, Wayne Smith and Grant Taylor - all members of the Red Mountain Brumpys Cycling Club from Mesa, Arizona. They crashed in to the back of a Ford Explorer that had stopped suddenly in front of them on the way down American Fork Canyon, hitting the back of the vehicle at approximately 64 km/hour. The vehicle stopped to avoid a truck pulling a trailer. The road was not closed to traffic.

“They had a rolling enclosure for the road race but people came back out as soon as the police went by,” said race promoter and cycling enthusiast Rick Bennett. “UDOT did not think it warranted a full road closure. We need to reach out to UDOT because that is a treacherous road and we have to have them close it in the future. If we don’t get full enclosure then this ride will never happen again.

“We need to be positive in looking forward rather than point fingers,” he added. “I have never seen so many cars up there before. By the grace of God we could have had a fatality there. We want to see what we can learn from this.”

Collins bore the brunt of the accident when he went through the vehicle’s rear window. According to group leader Sterling Baer, he was airlifted to the University of Utah Hospital. He underwent three surgeries over 13 hours to correct a broken jaw, facial bones, a punctured lung and a cut from his sternum to his ear that severed his jugular vein. Doctors report that despite his extensive injuries, they are positive he will make a full recovery.

Beck hit the back door of the vehicle and suffered a partially collapsed lung along with lacerations that required extensive stitching. He was taken to the Intermountain health Centre in Murray. Skousen slid through broken glass and needed some 30 stitches while Smith and Taylor crashed trying to avoid the vehicle and treated for significant road rash at the American Forks Hospital.

Two EMT trained cyclists and a former military nurse were present amongst the group who assisted the victims until ambulances arrived. One of the three helpers has not been identified yet.

“The first guy on scene was Judd, who was one of the Warrior riders and he is a physical therapist getting his Ph.D.,” said Bennett. “Another was an Orthodontist, Gary Hope, who came on scene and the third was a bystander who came over and said he was a Doctor and helped. The three of them did some miraculous work.”

Baer led 45 cyclists that included the five riders who were involved in the accident. The American Fork Canyon is a narrow and twisty descent located approximately half way through the 155km race.

“As an epilogue to what would have otherwise been a great day racing through some gorgeous country, I am sure that I can speak for my friends by saying that this was an unfortunate accident,” said Baer. “I am sure that they would hope that we all get back on our bikes and ride in a sport that we all love.

“I have read many negative commentaries about us cyclists and when incidents like this happen, it is important that as a greater cycling community, we stand together and support each other and continue to promote opportunity for participating in our sport,” he added. “If we allow antagonists to pressure events to be cancelled or limited in the future, we all suffer for it. While the accident was unfortunate, I support the efforts of Rick Bennett in doing everything possible to organise a safe race.”

The course routed the same stage four circuit as the Tour of Utah, a 155km road race starting in Park City. The notoriously epic route included three lengthy climbs, culminating at the top of the Snow Bird Ski Resort. The race started five hours before the professional men’s field.

Proceeds from the race entry fees went to support the Tour of Utah. Cyclists and spectators contributed to the Wounded Warriors Children’s Scholarship Fund while some 650 Warriors started the race.

TREMONTON, Utah (AP) — A tour bus crashed in northern Utah on Monday morning, injuring 23 passengers as snowstorms slickened the roads throughout the region.

The Salt Lake Express bus en route from Boise, Idaho to Salt Lake City, Utah had 33 passengers aboard. At about 4:30 a.m., its driver lost control while switching lanes, causing the bus to slide and flip onto its side, Utah Highway Patrol said in a statement.

The highway patrol said that of the nearly two dozen injured, only one passenger was being treated for life-threatening injuries as of Monday afternoon. Intermountain Bear River Valley Hospital said they had processed 19 of the injured passengers and sent 7 in serious or critical condition elsewhere. The majority of passengers sent to the community hospital were being treated for minor injuries, Intermountain spokesperson Jess Gomez said.

The community hospital located in Tremonton, about 67 miles (108 kilometers) north of Salt Lake City, has no trauma unit.

Non-injured passengers were transported to a nearby armory in Garland, Utah.

Irish cyclist Matt Brammeier slammed into a service car during Stage 6 of the Tour of Utah Saturday, but fortunately avoided head, neck or spinal injuries, according to his team . As a service car took an outside lane through a low-speed hairpin, Brammeier was unable to slow down in time and collided with the car.

The incident caused other cars and motorcycles to slow on the road, sparking another accident a few seconds later.

Brammeier tweeted from the hospital Sunday and seemed to be in good spirits.

4 dead, 15 remain hospitalized as investigators probe cause of Utah tour bus crash

by Jeremy Harris

More than a dozen people remain hospitalized on Friday after a deadly tour bus crash in rural Utah. (Photo: KUTV)

GARFIELD COUNTY, Utah (KUTV) — More than a dozen people remain hospitalized on Friday after a deadly tour bus crash in rural Utah.

The bus was carrying 30 tourists from China and a driver when it rolled on state Route 12 near Bryce Canyon National Park around 12 p.m.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, four passengers on the bus were killed, five were critically injured, and at least a dozen more sustained injuries.

Troopers spent the afternoon diagramming the scene and speaking with the driver of the bus, who is said to be injured but able to communicate.

“We believe the driver went off to the right and over-corrected back to the left and overturned one time, ending up back on its wheels,” Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street said.

The deceased victims are all from China. The Chinese Embassy is sending a team to Utah to assist the injured victims, according to a tweet put out by the embassy Friday night.

Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins said tour buses traveling through the area are very common, and first responders have trained for such an incident.

“This very thing has been a big worry for us, this is the real deal,” Perkins said.

A volunteer firefighter with Panguitch City Fire also happens to be fluent in mandarin Chinese and was able to help translate at the scene and at Garfield Memorial Hospital.

“I jumped in the first ambulance heading back and I helped in the ER the whole time,” firefighter Mike Sarles told 2News.

Sarles learned Chinese while serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taiwan. He later lived with his family in Asia before moving to rural Utah.

“People were asking me ‘Hey, what’s he saying? Where does it hurt?'” Sarles said. “We know the hospital staff pretty well, we all work and go to church together, so we know everybody.”

According to Intermountain Healthcare, fifteen patients remain hospitalized Friday evening at three hospitals — Garfield Memorial Hospital, Dixie Regional Medical Center, and Utah Valley Hospital. Other patients were treated and released from Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield.

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently sending a team to Utah. The Utah Department of Public Safety has taken custody of the bus and will work with federal authorities to continue the investigation.

2News has a team in Garfield County and will share updates on the investigation as they become available.

Driver hospitalized in critical condition after head-on crash closes US-6 in Utah County

UDOT advises drivers to expect delays on Bangerter Highway and US-89 this weekend April 25, 2024

Expect weekend delays due for utility work in salt lake and davis counties.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises drivers to plan ahead for two major closures in Salt Lake and Davis counties this weekend.

Starting Friday, April 26, at 10 p.m., Bangerter Highway will be closed in both directions between 12600 South and Redwood while crews relocate utilities so UDOT can build a new interchange at 13400 South. During this time there will be no through traffic on Bangerter Highway for both the northbound and southbound travel lanes. This section of the highway will reopen Monday, April 29 in time for the morning commute.

Drivers traveling east and west on 13400 South will still be able to travel through the intersection but will not be able to turn onto southbound Bangerter Highway. Drivers traveling north and south on 2700 West will still be able to travel through the intersection but will not be able to turn onto northbound Bangerter Highway .

tour of utah crash

Drivers should expect delays in the area and can use 12600 South and Redwood Road as alternate routes.

This work is part of the UDOT Bangerter South project , which is converting the intersections of 9800 South, 13400 South and 2700 West into freeway-style interchanges, which are anticipated to be complete at the end of 2025. These projects are a key part of UDOT’s efforts to eliminate stop lights along Bangerter Highway.

Also this weekend, southbound US-89 will be closed at South Weber Drive beginning Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m. while crews install a new water pipeline for the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District. The road will reopen on Monday, April 29, in time for the morning commute. All US-89 southbound traffic should detour to I-15 South from Riverdale. Through traffic will be detoured back to Riverdale on I-84 West.

Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.
