Mardi Borg

The tour stands as the pinnacle of beach volleyball in the state, delivering a competitive environment for both NSW's elite athletes and those in the developmental stages.

Port Macquarie is set to host the latest round of the tour on February 3-4.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Volleyball Association president Jet Lorenz will be among the locals competing on Saturday. He will be partnering up with fellow local Anthony Owers in men's division two.

Lorenz said it was great to have the event back in Port Macquarie after a two-year break.

"It's good to showcase what our region has to offer, and we're very happy that it has returned to our region," he said. "It's also really good that the sport is growing, and we have enough people to represent the area.

"The fact that there will be around a dozen locals competing in the tournament is always nice for the region."

Lorenz said Andrew "AJ" Olsen and Sean Bosschieter will be strong local contenders in men's division one. Andrew's younger brother Matthew will be competing in the same division.

"I don't know how competitive the players who are travelling will be, but I think AJ and Sean will have the greatest chance at getting a podium finish," he said.

Also representing the Mid North Coast are young duo, Kurtis Winship and Connor Playford, who will be competing in the men's division two match-ups, along with Dominic Norris and Clayton Towle.

"I think they will do quite well," Lorenz said. "They're both quite athletic and have incredible skills, so they are expected to be very competitive on the day."

They will be playing alongside Nicholas Booth and Jason Hay who are set to compete in the same division.

Meanwhile, Kiera Johnson will be a strong local competitor in women's division one.

Matthew and Andrew's mum, Ashleigh Olsen said the event is set to "draw in a great crowd".

"It's always a really fun, social and uplifting game, and the parents always enjoy watching their kids," she said.

"We're hoping for a strong crowd this weekend. If people can brave the heat, it would be great to see a large crowd supporting our locals."

Volleyball Tour

30 July 2018

The recent volleyball tour of Italy saw Ms Trinh Loi (Director of Volleyball), Mr Alan Campbell (Director of Cricket), Mr Sam Woodward (St Ives Preparatory School) and twenty boys selected from across the Open volleyball teams visit a range of cities, experiencing Italian art and culture, and playing a high level of volleyball.

In addition to the pizza and pasta, the boys: Jared Adams, Sam Cleary, Lochlann Doyle, Jonah Green, Mikey Grogan, Hugh Lam, Andrew Ren, Peter Taurian (all Form V), Marcus Allan, Jackson Gordon, Aaron Heydon, Kerry Huang, Steven Huang, George Jabbour, Ned Kingston, Oliver Ma, Shelby Narborough, Quentin So (all Form IV), Damon Dyer, Albert Tang (both Form III), enjoyed guided tours of Milan, Lake Como, Verona, Venice, Florence and Rome. St Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum and the Sistine Chapel were among the cultural highlights of the trip.

The fourteen-day tour was hugely successful. The Grammar teams played eleven matches, recorded two wins and a draw with sets being won in almost every match played. This is quite an achievement considering these matches were against club representative sides, including the top Italian club, Modena Volley and a men’s team. This tour was a once in a lifetime experience.

How veteran coach Bobby Mock has the St. Andrew's volleyball team off to best season ever

Portrait of Dennis Knight

Bobbi Mock has been a positive courtside presence as a high school volleyball and basketball coach for nearly three decades in Savannah and her influence in her fourth season coaching volleyball at St. Andrew's has the Lions off to the best start in school history.

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, St. Andrew's rolled to straight set wins over visiting Woodville-Tompkins and Jenkins as the Lions improved to 17-1 on the season. The Lions only loss came in a five-set setback at Hilton Head Prep on Sept. 5. St. Andrew's had won the two previous meetings between the squads this season.

St. Andrew's has been winning behind a mixture of experience and youth with six seniors on the team, complemented by an influx of youngsters making a big impact. The Lions are currently ranked No. 5 in the GIAA Class 3A state rankings.

"We preach a lot about doing your job and letting everything else fall into place," said Mock, who coached basketball and volleyball for 23 years at Savannah Country Day before leaving the school in 2020. "Obviously having six seniors who understand the culture we're trying to build leading the program this year has been important, but I think the girls genuinely like each other and have a strong bond."

Senior Addison Yates is a leader on the team who anchors the back line as a libero. She leads the team with 169 digs and has 40 aces.

"Addie is our energizer bunny, she's tenacious on defense and her energy is contagious on the court." Mock said.

Senior Sydney Booth and sophomore Grace Dare are sharing the setting duties efficiently in the 6-2 rotational system, and the Lions are getting excellent play from a trio of hitters in Kaia Reiter, Makenna Riley and Khloe Jesswein, the 5-foot-10 freshman who leads the team in kills with 134.

"We joke with Khloe that she might act like a freshman off the court, but she plays like a junior or senior," Mock said. "And she gets better with every match she plays. She is a club volleyball who does everything she can to improve as a player."

Reiter is a former tennis player who has only been playing volleyball for two seasons. She said Mock has been instrumental in her development.

"She's very encouraging and has helped me recognize my faults without beating myself up," Reiter said. "She always makes sure our team is in a good mood and tries to get us to play to the best of our ability."

Yates is a versatile athlete who is also a standout with the Lion basketball, flag football and track and field teams, but says volleyball has always been her favorite. She was a member of the Lion squad that won the first region title in school history her sophomore season, and the team that went 10-10 last year.

"We have a super close team and there's a lot of excitement with our students and faculty supporting us this year," Yates said. "Our coaches are saying we have a chance to make it to the Final Four, but we think we have the talent to win a state championship."

On Aug. 21, the Lions made school history with the program's first wins over Islands and South Effingham on the same night ― and Mock said that set the course for a memorable season.

"I think those wins made the girls realize that they are as good as we've been saying they are," said Mock, a teacher at Coastal Middle School, where she coaches the boys basketball team. "Our goal is to win the region tournament and to get a chance to host the first playoff game in school history, and make a good playoff run."
