Best European cruises: 6 ships that stand out across the pond

Prospective cruisers often ask me what the best Europe cruises are, but that question is difficult to answer because Europe is massive. It encompasses some 45 countries and includes such cruise regions as the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Northern Europe, the British Isles and the Canary Islands.

While cruisers are spoiled for choice in this part of the world, it can be difficult to know where to begin when researching voyages.

To help you out, I've narrowed down my favorites for the best cruises to Europe for different types of travelers, including families, couples and solo travelers.

Best European cruises for families: Disney Dream

Disney Cruise Line is great for kids; if you're planning a cruise in Europe with kids, Disney Dream is a logical choice for best European cruise for families.

Character meet 'n' greets, awe-inspiring nighttime entertainment and fun dining experiences mean your kiddos will never be bored. The ship's stellar kids clubs go above and beyond with a likeness of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and a replica of the Millennium Falcon from "Star Wars" (with visits from R2-D2 and a squad of stormtroopers).

Disney Dream is not the line's newest ship, meaning it's a bit more manageable in terms of both size and price. It's not the oldest, either, so families will find more things to do on board than on the line's smallest vessels.

Ashore, Disney's family-friendly excursions will take you to laze on the beach, explore museums and learn about history.

Disney Dream sails three- to 12-night cruises to Northern and Western Europe, the British Isles and the Mediterranean. Cruise fares start from $308 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. You can visit ports like Belfast and Liverpool on cruises from Southampton; Florence and Rome (Civitavecchia) on Barcelona sailings; and Reykjavik, Copenhagen and Lisbon on open-jaw itineraries.

Best European cruises for couples: Viking Star

If you're a couple seeking an upscale Mediterranean experience that offers real value and a chance to reconnect with your partner, look no further than Viking .

The line's Viking Star sails various Mediterranean itineraries, and the European ports the ship visits offer plenty of opportunities for you to feel the love. Have a phenomenal lunch at a table for two in France, take a pizza-making class together in Italy, get a little giggly at a wine tasting in Greece, or run the casino tables together in Monaco.

Viking includes at least one free shore excursion per port in its fares. That means you can wander Europe's romantic cobblestone streets hand in hand with your sweetie without paying a penny extra.

While fares aren't the cheapest you'll find, you'll get a lot for your money. In addition to the tours, Viking includes Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and beer and wine with lunch and dinner in its prices.

Plus, all cabins on Viking's ships have balconies, which is great if you want some fresh air but feel like keeping to yourself. Complimentary room service is available 24/7, so you can order dinner to your cabin for a relaxing alfresco dining experience for two.

Want even more ways to pamper yourselves together? Check out the phenomenal thermal suite in the ship's spa , which offers sauna and steam rooms, tile loungers and aromatherapy rooms at no extra charge. Or, splurge on a couples massage, which will leave both of you feeling loose and refreshed.

Even better, Viking ships do not allow children on board. It's a great excuse for you and your significant other to rekindle the romance without other passengers' kids running around.

Viking's Mediterranean sailings range from seven to 21 nights. Back-to-back itineraries are rarely the same as Viking Star circles the Med. The ship visits ports such as Barcelona, Spain; Marseille, France; Florence (Livorno), Rome (Civitavecchia), Sicily and Venice, Italy; Monte Carlo, Monaco; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Athens and Santorini, Greece; and Kusadasi, Turkey.

Fares start from $381 per person, per night, for a balcony stateroom.

Best European cruises for seniors: Seabourn Sojourn

If you're a senior traveler who loves great food and excellent wine, one of the best luxury European cruises you can book is a Canary Islands cruise on Seabourn 's Seabourn Sojourn.

The small ship carries fewer than 500 passengers, and you won't find raucous parties or tons of children. Instead, you'll be met with stellar service, gourmet food, a room with a view (all cabins have at least a window) and relative peace and quiet. The long itineraries are ideal for wealthier passengers with lots of time to travel.

Seabourn Sojourn's voyages to the Canaries span 10 to 28 days and visit the islands of La Palma, Gran Canaria and Madeira, as well as Lisbon, Portugal. Fares start from $434 per person, per night, for an ocean-view cabin. Extras like Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol (including the in-room mini-bar) are rolled into the fares.

Best for solo cruisers: Norwegian Epic

When Norwegian Epic debuted in 2010, it introduced Norwegian Cruise Line 's first cabins for solo travelers. Designed with single beds and a bit less square footage, these so-called studio cabins are clustered around an exclusive lounge reserved for solos. Special activities allow folks traveling alone to mingle and make new friends.

Since Norwegian Epic began sailing, nearly all of the line's new ships — Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva — have been built with accommodations for one, which don't charge occupants a single supplement . However, it's Norwegian Epic that has a presence in the Western Mediterranean, offering solo cruisers a chance to explore Europe on a ship with staterooms just for them.

On board, passengers have plenty of choices for activities and dining. In addition to the usual cruise-ship offerings — pool games, dance parties, game shows, trivia and movie screenings — Epic offers many fun diversions, including an adults-only beach club at the back of the ship, spa treatments, a bowling alley and even gaming lessons (the latter three for a fee).

The vessel sails five- to 12-night voyages back and forth between Rome and Barcelona, calling on ports that include Naples, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Marseille, Cannes and Florence (Livorno). At press time, last-minute fares started from $90 per person, per night, for a studio cabin for one.

Best European party cruises: Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady

If your Europe bucket list includes the Greek Isles, you don't want to sail with children, and you enjoy a lively party atmosphere, you can't go wrong with Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady. The third ship in the line's fleet, Resilient Lady offers some of the best cruises to the Greek Islands.

Expect a casual vibe where passengers dress up like mermaids, crew dress up like drag queens, and performers look like real people. Toss in an onboard tattoo parlor, a food court ( it's not a buffet ), free fitness classes and an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on the ship, and you've got a product that has turned the cruise industry on its head.

Wild nights on board include raucous and sometimes raunchy theater shows, impromptu dance parties and Scarlet Night, a poolside bash reminiscent of a rave where everyone's dressed in red. If that's not enough, attend enough daily activities, and you might be invited to a secret nighttime tour of the crew bar, drinks included.

The ship offers a regular program of 7-, 10- and 14-night voyages, starting from $148 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The itineraries involve a mix of ports in Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey, depending on the specific sailing you choose.

Best European cruises for 'wow' factor: Hurtigruten's Richard With

Looking for a sailing that no other cruise line offers — one that will make everyone on TikTok and Instagram jealous? I'm putting my money on a line you've likely never heard of: Hurtigruten .

What began more than 130 years ago as a way for Norway's residents to move themselves and cargo up and down the Norwegian coast continues today as both a means of transportation and a way for cruisers to experience the country's culture.

On the cruise line's Norwegian Coastal Express route, Hurtigruten's Richard With ship calls on 34 ports in just seven days. Some are quick stops in the middle of the night while cargo is loaded and unloaded, but you technically could get off the ship in each port if you wanted to. That in itself makes this itinerary buzzworthy.

Still need convincing? These voyages also cross into the Arctic Circle and sail into Geirangerfjord (northbound from Bergen to Kirkenes) and Trollfjord (southbound from Kirkenes to Bergen), affording absolutely breathtaking views and, of course, bragging rights.

The two routes can be combined into longer 13-day sailings, meaning you'd sail round-trip from Bergen and see all the fjords. Seven-night northbound itineraries from Bergen to Kirkenes start at $331 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Ultimately, the best cruise to Europe is a bit subjective in that it depends where in Europe you'd like to go and what your travel style is. Be sure to weigh a combination of destination, price and onboard vibe when deciding which is best for you and your travel party.

After a pandemic year without any European cruises available to Americans, sailing options are returning for the summer 2021 season. Cruise lines are testing the waters with a limited number of ships and new health and safety protocols in place with most cruises restricted to passengers who have been vaccinated.

There are benefits to being first in line postpandemic. Ships will sail at reduced capacity and popular attractions are unlikely to be crowded. You may find you have a museum or café practically to yourself. As restrictions ease, the traffic is bound to pick up in 2022, which already is looking like a year when ships will sail full due to pent-up demand.

Here are our picks for cruises this summer and beyond.

Norway: Seabourn wintertime cruise

Seeing the Northern Lights is practically guaranteed on Seabourn’s new wintertime Norway itineraries debuting in December. The 12- to 14-day sailings also introduce the line’s first purpose-built, polar-class expedition yacht, the 264-passenger Seabourn Venture , equipped with two custom, six-seat submarines, two dozen Zodiacs, and expedition kayaks for intimate exploration of Norway’s winter landscape. Excursions, which include the opportunity to camp on land overnight for optimal Northern Lights viewing, are led by a 26-person expedition team. Alternatively, you may opt to just stay cozy in your fancy suite and get a wake-up call should the lights appear. Most departures are from Tromsø, Norway, or Copenhagen, with fares for 12-night sailings starting from $10,999 per person.

Greece: A crusie with Seabourn, Silversea, Ponant, Windstar, or Variety Cruises

With its historic sites, whitewashed towns, the popular beaches of Mykonos, and views galore in the cliffside towns of Santorini, Greece opened its doors to international travelers in May. Nearly a dozen cruise lines are returning to the Aegean this summer and fall so there are ample options for those seeking to sail the Greek isles.

Ultraluxury lines such as Seabourn and Silversea are in the mix for summer 2021, along with boutique lines such as France-based Ponant and Windstar , with its 148-passenger, four-masted Wind Star sailing ship.

Or explore for a week on Greek-owned Variety Cruises ’ 157-foot, 49-passenger sailing yacht Galileo , going beyond the norm to lesser-known Cycladic and Dodecanese islands such as Levitha, where a summertime restaurant for sailors is run by the one family who lives on the island.

Adriatic: Viking’s 10-night Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise

When Viking Ocean Cruises returns to cruising this summer, it will have three ships sailing from Valletta on Malta to Greece, Italy, and Spain. Our pick is Viking’s 10-night Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise, roundtrip from Valletta. The ship gets you to Kotor, Montenegro (you’ll want to be on deck as you sail through a river valley surrounded by peaks); the fairy-tale-like Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia; the Croatian city of Split with its 4th-century Roman palace; and Gozo, Malta, where according to legend giants built the prehistoric palace, which predates Stonehenge. There’s also opportunity in Croatia and Malta to see filming locations for HBO’s Game of Thrones . Sail on the 930-passenger Viking Venus , a new ship from Viking. Fares from $3,599 per person.

Basque Country: Lindblad Expeditions Lisbon to Bordeaux cruise

New from Lindblad Expeditions in April 2022 is a unique cultural exploration cruise from Lisbon to Bordeaux . The itinerary begins in Porto, Portugal, and continues through Basque country to the epicenter for French wine, Bordeaux, with a strong focus on food and drink throughout the cruise.

Spain and France: National Geographic Resolution

Sail on the new, polar-class, 126-passenger National Geographic Resolution , where you can work out in the yoga studio or linger in the infinity-style hot tubs when not on shore sipping port at the wine cellars in Porto. During the cruise, you will have the opportunity to spend a day collecting mussels with local fishermen in Galicia, Spain, visit Bilbao’s Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim art museum, and sample tapas and sparkling wine in a French Basque fishing village. Fares from $6,870 per person.

River Cruise: AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna cruise

River cruises return this summer , with Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, and AmaWaterways among the lines relaunching ships—although not their whole fleets—on rivers that include Portugal’s Douro, France’s Seine and Rhône, and the multi-country Rhine and Danube. A great way to sail the Danube is on AmaWaterways ’ impressive, double-wide, 196-passenger AmaMagna , traveling between Budapest and Vilshofen, Germany, stopping in Bratislava, Slovakia, and with an overnight in Vienna. Sip the local gruner veltliner and riesling in Wachau Valley or dance like you are in The Sound of Music in Salzburg. Back on the ship, check out in wellness classes on the spacious roof deck or dining in onboard restaurants that include a fancy Chef’s Table venue (where you might score a taste of Siberian caviar) and a wine bar. Seven-night cruise from $3,099 per person.

Iceland: Crystal Cruises’ new Crystal Endeavor

The land of fire and ice is open for cruising this summer, and several lines will be exploring the coast, bringing guests to lava fields, gigantic waterfalls, seabird colonies, and other striking landscapes under the Midnight Sun. Luxury line Crystal Cruises is debuting its new 200-passenger, polar-class Crystal Endeavor , equipped with two six-passenger helicopters, a six-passenger submarine and the only casino on an expedition ship, on 10-night sailings (fares from $16,499 per person). Circumnavigating Iceland from Reykjavík, the itinerary includes stops on the mainland and islands including Grimsey Island, above the Arctic Circle, where you might catch sight of rare little auks with their black and white plumage.

Italy: Disney’s Disney Magic cruise

If the upcoming Disney and Pixar movie “Luca” has the family hankering for Italy, get the crew on a Disney cruise that includes Genoa.

Attention Disney and Pixar fans. If, after seeing the movie Luca , which debuts June 18, your family gets a hankering to visit Italy, Disney Cruise Line has you covered. The 1,750-passenger Disney Magic will sail in Europe spring and summer 2022, with several sailings stopping in Italy. A six-night departure from Barcelona to Rome on June 4, 2022 (fares for a family of four sharing a cabin start at $6,732 per person), gets you to Genoa, which is key. Scenes from the movie, a 1950s coming-of-age story, are inspired by the area southeast of Genoa. An Ultimate Italian Riviera shore excursion ($159 per person) takes you to the town of Camogli and other sites that will look familiar to Luca fans. Disney is being mum about any possible movie-related character appearances and experiences.

All-Europe: Silversea’s Grand Europe cruise

If you are uneasy about returning to Europe this year, consider making up for lost time in one fell swoop. Ultraluxury line Silversea has assigned its 596-passenger Silver Moon to a Grand Europe itinerary embarking Athens on March 30, 2022, and hitting basically all major water-accessible attractions—72 ports of call in 22 countries in total—on a three-month itinerary that ends in Stockholm. Can’t be away that long? You can alternatively book a 37-night segment to visit 33 places in the Mediterranean, or a 53-night segment that will get you from Lisbon to Stockholm, including the British Isles, Scandinavia, and Russia. Fares for the whole shebang from $57,060 per person.

British Isles and Ireland: Hurtigruten

Norwegian line Hurtigruten explores remote parts of the British Isles on a 12-night itinerary (from $6,741 per person) next spring and summer, with the recently updated 532-passenger Maud. Sailing roundtrip from Dover, United Kingdom, passengers will visit places known for Neolithic sites, bird colonies, whiskey, and woolens. Among the destinations are Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland, with easy access to the basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway, and Scotland’s Inner and Outer Hebrides, including the rocky and wild St. Kilda archipelago, home to the second-largest gannet colony in the world. Plan to sip on Islay Island, Scotland, home to nine distilleries, and have an opportunity to purchase crystal in Waterford, Ireland. For those looking to reduce their footprint as they return to travel, it’s worth noting that the ship was recently reconfigured to run partially on biofuel and lower emissions.

Where can I cruise to in Europe? 

A Celebrity European cruise vacation takes you to some of the most exciting cities in the world, from Iceland and the Fjords in Northern Europe to the Mediterranean,  the Canary Islands and the stunning Greek Isles. You’ll set sail on spectacular new adventures on any European cruise with Celebrity.

When’s the best time to cruise?

We offer a wide variety of Europe itineraries with our newest Edge-class ships sailing during the summer and Celebrity Infinity year round. Each region of Europe offers different experiences guests can enjoy. 

Enjoy the quintessential Mediterranean summer with spectacular beaches, warm weather, and delicious food, or sail through the Norwegian fjords between May and August, when they are at their most beautiful. Visit unique destinations like the Holy Land in the cooler months, from February to April.

How long are European cruises?

From 4-night getaways to 14-night sailings, we have options for everyone in Europe year round. Get away for a weekend to Belgium and the Netherlands or set off on a week-long adventure to the Mediterranean, Norwegian Fjords or the exquisite paradise of the Canary Islands. 

What should I pack?

What to pack for a cruise to Europe depends on where you’re headed, and when. For the Mediterranean in summer, you’ll need beachwear, a sun hat, and light clothes for a hot climate. The British Isles, on the other hand, is often cool and damp, even in the height of summer, so you should pack a light waterproof jacket. The same applies to Iceland, Ireland, and Scandinavia. You could be basking in hot sunshine, but there are no guarantees. 

If you’re traveling as the seasons change, in April and May, or between September and November, you’ll need to pack for all eventualities. Remember to include comfortable shoes for walking around ruins and through old castles, and something to cover your shoulders if you want to go inside churches and mosques.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual. 

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. 

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What can I see while I’m there?

Yes, you can request seat assignments in instances where the airline makes them available to Celebrity Cruises®. Most air carriers charge a fee for early seat assignment requests and when this occurs you will be directed to contact the airline directly to confirm your seating.

Europe has a rich, diverse mix of cultures and countries that you can immerse yourself in. See medieval towns like Tallinn, Estonia, or chic Scandinavian capitals such as Stockholm and Copenhagen. 

In the Mediterranean, visit Rome, Barcelona, Athens, Florence, and Pisa for a culture and history fix. You will see astonishing natural beauty, too, from geysers and volcanoes in Iceland to the rolling green hills of Ireland, and the majestic scenery of the Norwegian fjords. 

Pick an itinerary that matches your interests and pace yourself; some places are best explored with a guide, while in others, it can be fun to just sit and people-watch with a glass of local wine or a cold beer.

Should I book tours ahead of time?

If you are traveling in peak season, we recommend you book your Shore Excursions through My Celebrity Cruises as soon as you confirm your sailing as many attractions in Europe are extremely popular. 

Booking a shore excursion with Celebrity also means you’ll be visiting attractions with a professional guide, and on a tour that guarantees to return you to the ship on time.

Can I get around with English?

Many languages are spoken in Europe, from French, German, Italian, and Spanish to Estonian, Swedish, and Danish. Most people working in the hospitality industry speak at least some English.

Is a European cruise good for families?

A cruise to Europe is a great family vacation option as kids will be exposed to multiple cultures, not to mention millennia of history and different cuisines. You’ll find attractions that are great fun for the whole family, from the pretty Tivoli Gardens amusement park in Copenhagen to the ABBA Museum in Stockholm. 

Kids will love exploring castles in Scotland and Ireland, basking in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, or spotting whales on a boat tour. The Norwegian fjords are packed with outdoor activities such as RIB rides, hikes, and kayaking, while a trip to the Mediterranean is a fantastic way to make ancient history come to life for kids in locations like the Colosseum in Rome, or the Parthenon in Athens.

Do I need a visa to cruise to Europe?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here . 

The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries. 

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

What type of currency will I need?

Most, but not all countries in Europe use the Euro as their official currency. All the places you will visit on your European cruise will have ATMs, and credit cards are widely accepted. Carry cash for things like taxi fares or purchases in markets. Some countries don’t use the Euro; in Britain, for example, the currency is the pound, while Sweden and Turkey both have their own currencies.

If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the culture of the Vikings or explore what makes people in the Nordic region the so-called happiest on earth, you could do a lot worse than book a Scandinavian cruise.

Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered.

Such a trip offers the opportunity to sample various Scandinavian travel highlights , whether you prefer the Scandinavian capitals, the stunning Norwegian fjords, or soaking up the atmosphere of beautiful islands and historic ports in the Baltic Sea.

Popular Scandinavian Cruise Itineraries

Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Typically, they focus on the Nordic capital cities. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland.

With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises.

Scandinavian Capitals : Cruise itineraries starting in the U.K. or Germany and calling in at two or even all three of Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen have long been popular.

The Nyhavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark, is a popular destination for cruise ship passengers ... [+] visiting Scandinavia.

Helsinki is often included on such itineraries. If you want to explore modern Scandinavia while gaining access to some of the region’s best museums, such an itinerary is a perfect choice.

Such itineraries tend to be shorter, and are a great introduction to both cruising and Scandinavia, with limited sea days and plenty to see and do while in port.

Baltic Sea : Longer Scandinavian itineraries often include stops at Baltic Sea islands and ports. The beautiful Estonian capital city, Tallinn, or the Latvian capital, Riga, are particular highlights, as are ports on the northern coastline of Germany and Poland.

For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland .

One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.

Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.

The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.

The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.

No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.

Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.

Cruising And Sustainability

Prospective travelers should be aware of environmental concerns associated with cruising in this pristine region. The industry is moving towards sustainability, with initiatives to introduce zero-emission vessels in sensitive areas, particularly the UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords .

Is a European cruise on your bucket list? Here's a step-by-step guide on how to plan a European cruise, including how to choose your destinations, cruise lines, embarkation port, book the right excursions and even a couple of cruise packing tips. 

From Rome to London, from the Greek Islands to the Norwegian fjords, many of Europe's top places to visit are coastal destinations that you can visit on a European cruise. With over 200 ports of call to choose from, you can plan the trip you've always dreamed of.

Whether this is your first time cruising or your first time to Europe, you might be feeling overwhelmed at the thought of planning all of the small (but necessary) details that go into making your dream European vacation a reality. From trying to choose the right excursions for an authentic European experience to worrying about language barriers, it can feel like there are a lot of obstacles to overcome during the planning process.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Planning A European Cruise

If you're wondering where the easy button is for planning your European cruise, this is it. 

Whether you're planning to sunbathe in the Mediterranean or wander your way through the Scandinavian and Baltic countries in the north, use this step-by-step guide to move from overwhelm to living out the reality of your dream vacation in Europe.

Part 1: Plan Your European Cruise

The first steps in planning your European cruise are quite simple:

• Choose when you'll be cruising.
• Decide how long you'll travel.
• Select a general region for your European cruise.
• Confirm your cruise line and embarkation ports.

Here are more details to consider during each of these steps.

1. Choose When You'll Be Cruising

While there are ideal times to set sail, there is no definitively "perfect" time of year. That said there are a couple of things to keep in mind when you're planning your European cruise.

Here are some tips and tricks to help choose the right time of year to set sail, based on the three main European cruise regions:

Northern Europe (Including Scandinavian & Baltic Cruises)

Personally, I enjoy Northern Europe's weather best in the summer months. I took a Norwegian fjords cruise at the summer solstice (June) and it was amazing to cruise at night and have it still be light outside.

Also, if you're planning to head out on a Northern Europe cruise, the fjords are really not to be missed. The sights are incredible and completely unlike anything you'd see on a Mediterranean or Caribbean cruise .

That said, cruising Northern Europe in the winter might be for you if you're hoping to catch some jaw-dropping views of the northern lights. Scandinavian winter cruises offer some of the best viewing opportunities in the entire world. If the northern lights are what you're after, look for cruises around the spring equinox (March).

Western Mediterranean

First things first, it's important to know that many cruise lines begin repositioning their Mediterranean ships in October and early November. While there are a handful of cruise lines – like Costa Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Viking Ocean – that continue to cruise during the off-season, know that your selection will be somewhat limited. 

That said, while summer marks the high travel season in Europe, I prefer traveling around Europe in the fall. Primarily because it's less crowded and not as hot (but still quite nice weather-wise). Cruising to Europe allows you to still get out on the ocean, travel to bucket-list-worthy destinations and totally miss Caribbean cruises hurricane season!

Eastern Mediterranean

Similar to the western Mediterranean cruise region, you'll see a more limited selection of cruise travel options during the winter months.

The peak season for the eastern Mediterranean region falls between June and September, though July and August certainly see the most travelers. Again, my preference for this region falls onto the shoulder seasons from mid-September to November or May through June.

Why? The reason is simple: fewer tourists. Greece and Turkey get particularly busy during those summer months and it can be brutally hot. Cruising during the shoulder seasons helps combat both of those elements. 

2. Decide How Long You'll Travel

While you can find European cruises lasting anywhere from three hours to three weeks, the majority of European cruise itineraries will last between 5 and 14 nights. And if you're hoping to visit a handful of countries, you're in luck. You can expect to visit anywhere between three to four countries during a one-week cruise!

In general, European ports are closer in proximity to one another than you'll find on Caribbean cruises. So even if you choose a shorter cruise, you're still likely to see plenty of destinations. In fact, you won't see too many days at sea because of this. 

If you're like me (traveling to Europe from the United States), I also highly recommend adding extra days to your travel itinerary to explore your embarkation city and combat some of the inevitable jet lag you may feel upon your arrival in Europe. 

No matter how long you decide to travel for, remember:

Europe isn't around the corner! Give yourself enough travel time to make your trip worth the 8+ hours of one-way flight time. 

3. Select a General Region for Your European Cruise

This is the fun part – which destinations are we going to be ticking off the bucket list on this adventure?

Here are some of the most popular European regions for cruising.

Northern Europe & Scandinavia 

This is your chance to get a glimpse of destinations like the British Isles or the Norwegian Fjords. These Northern European cruises might not offer beach time, but they make up for it with beautiful historical sights, incredible natural vistas and a wide variety of cultural heritage.

Itineraries for cruises that travel this region might include countries like:

• Netherlands

Pro Tip: The Norwegian fjords are breathtaking. Do not miss this spectacular natural sight! That said, as you might expect, many Norwegian fjord cruises travel primarily within Norway. If you're hoping to see a variety of European countries, look for itineraries that include more destinations.

If you're dreaming of slightly warmer weather, a cruise in the eastern Mediterranean might be the perfect fit. Eastern Mediterranean cruises are a particularly great choice for travelers looking for a balance between beach time and historic architecture. You could find yourself wandering around the Acropolis in Athens and soaking up some sunshine in Kusadasi all on the same trip!

Eastern Mediterranean cruise itineraries typically include countries like:

Pro Tip: If you find yourself in Dubrovnik, don’t miss walking the old city walls. The views are incredible. And any Game of Thrones fans will quickly recognize some of the most iconic sights of King's Landing.

Western Mediterranean cruises are a great way to see some of the most beautiful cities in Europe. You're likely to see plenty of Italian cities like Taormina (Sicily), Florence, Naples, Sorrento, and Venice, as well as a variety of French towns like Marseille, Nice, and Corsica. You might also find places like Tenerife and La Palma (Canary Islands) on the itinerary. But no matter your destinations, you're sure to get your fill of historic sights, local cuisine and plenty of charming shops. 

Here are some of the countries you can expect to see on a western Mediterranean cruise itinerary:

• And may even include Morroco

Pro Tip: You are unlikely to find western Mediterranean cruises running during the winter months. If you find yourself hankering to country hop through the countries mentioned above, you're best to do so during the summer and early fall. 

River Cruises in Europe

Unlike the other European regions mentioned above, river cruises set sail from destinations that are further inland, like Keoln or Budapest. The full river cruise season typically runs from March until the end of December, though some (particularly those running through France) end their runs in October.

You can cruise from Vienna or Amsterdam (or beyond) and what's really neat about river cruises is that the ships are much smaller . Compare the average 3,000 passengers on a Caribbean or Mediterranean cruise to the mere 200 guests on a river cruise boat. And you'll find that there's usually a stop every day, meaning you get to see a lot in a relatively short amount of time. It's a totally different cruising experience!

I haven’t done a full river cruise yet (it’s on my bucket list), but I have done a day cruise on the Rhine taking in Rudesheim and Koblenz. It was truly amazing seeing the castles from the river and exploring the historic towns! 

The most popular river cruises in Europe travel through countries like:

• Switzerland

Some of the most popular European river cruises are found traveling along the Danube, Rhine, Seine, and Rhone, though there are also river cruises that run in Portugal's Duoro and even on the Volga River in Russia.

Of course, expect your weather to be typical to the regular weather you'd experience in the countries you're traveling through. Russia can be quite cold, even in the fall! The same goes for countries like Germany and Switzerland.

Pro Tip: If you've dreamed of wandering through European Christmas markets with a mug of delicious Glühwein in hand, check for river cruises running along the Danube and Rhine in November and December. 

4. Confirm Your Cruise Line & Embarkation Port

You've got a general idea of when you're traveling, how long you're traveling for and where you'll be traveling to...now it's time to choose your cruise line and embarkation port. Keep in mind that you may wish to choose your itinerary based on the embarkation port or for a particular cruise line.

I’ve cruised with Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Carnival in Europe, though there are plenty of other cruise lines operating in the region. And as far as embarkation ports go, my preference is always to fly to Europe.

While you can cruise from New York or Florida to Europe, you’ll have more sea days on a transatlantic crossing and fewer port days to explore Europe than on a typical European cruise. I’ve sailed Europe from Venice, London (Southhampton) and Rome (Civitavecchia), though my favorite port to sail out of is Venice because you’re in the heart of the city and cruise right by St. Mark’s square!

Here are the cruise lines and most popular embarkation ports to consider for each of the European cruising regions. 

Northern Europe & Scandinavian Cruise Lines

If you're sailing towards Northern Europe and Scandinavia, you'll want to consider cruise lines like:

• Holland America
• Norwegian Cruises
• Princess Cruises
• Celebrity Cruises
• Carnival 
• Viking Ocean Cruises
• Costa Cruise Lines
• MSC Cruises

Many of the Northern European cruises embark from Southampton, Dublin, Amsterdam, and Bergen. If you're setting sail on a Scandinavia-only cruise, your most likely embarkation points will be found in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

Mediterranean Cruise Lines

If you're setting sail on the Mediterranean, you'll want to consider cruise lines like:

• Royal Caribbean International

Almost all of the western Mediterranean cruises embark from Southampton. Many of the eastern Mediterranean cruises embark from Athens or Civitavecchia.

River Cruise Lines

If you've decided on a river cruise, you'll want to look at cruise lines like:

• Viking River Cruises
• AmaWaterways
• Avalon Waterways
• Uniworld River Cruises

While there are other river cruise lines operating in Europe, the cruise lines mentioned above definitely have the widest variety of cruise itineraries.

While all of these cruise lines embark from Basel, Budapest, Amsterdam or Nuremberg, there are plenty of other options for your embarkation point.

Pro Tip: Use  this cruise search tool  to make finalizing your booking details easy! Simply set where you’re going and the dates you'd like to travel, as well as other specific criteria like a particular departure port, cruise length, or cruise line and it will show you all the cruises that fit your preferences. From there you can see all the details about the ship, the exact itinerary (including which destinations the cruise covers) and pricing for each cruise option. 

Part 2: Book your European cruise

Now that you have many of the big details in place, it's time to book your cruise and nail down some of the fun vacation details – like which type of cabin you'll book and what type of excursions to look for!

During this stage in your planning you'll be:

• Choose your cabin type and location.
• Plan travel to and from your embarkation point.
• Book your onshore excursions.

1. Choose Your Cabin Type & Location

Next up: choosing your cabin. You’ll pick your exact cabin on the ship map when you book your cruise. It's just like booking a seat on a plane! 

Cabins on European Ocean Cruise Ships

When it comes to the types of rooms on larger cruise ships, you’ll have your choice of inside rooms, exterior rooms, and suites. Know that while inside rooms are certainly budget-friendly, they don't have any windows. If you like to wake up with the sun, an inside room is not a good choice for you.

Exterior rooms will always have either windows or a balcony. I always get an exterior room with a balcony – preferably an extended balcony. It’s one of my favorite places on the ship to watch the waves!

Pro Tip: Most cruises have room service included. One of my favorite things to do is order breakfast to enjoy on my balcony while watching the ship pull into port. It's a great way to start a day of adventure!

The other consideration you’ll want to look at is the location of your room. You’ll see options of midship, forward, or aft, as well as higher or lower deck. Your best bet is to consider the restaurants, pool, spa or other amenities onboard that you plan to use and choose a room that’s relatively close to that area of the ship.

Pro Tip:  Look for forward (front of the ship), aft (back of the ship) or corner rooms as they will often have more space or an extended balcony. Or conversely, the center of the ship will have the least motion. If you're concerned about seasickness, choose a midship cabin closer to sea level.

Cabins on European River Cruise Ships

You'll find that while cabins on river cruise ships vary quite drastically from one cruise to another, all of these cruise ships have one thing in common. No inside rooms! So all staterooms onboard will have at least one window . This is primarily due to the necessity for these ships to be more narrow than ocean liners – they have to maneuver a river after all!

Many river cruise cabins offer the little luxury of a French balcony. Open your stateroom doors and let in that fresh air! While you won't have access to any outdoor space, having a French balcony still provides you with a beautiful view of your surroundings. Don't worry – there will be a railing. There's no need to worry about falling into the river!

2. Planning Travel To & From Your Embarkation Point

The great thing about European cruises is that you have lots of flexibility when it comes to your points of embarkation and disembarkation.

You can sail in and out of the same port or start in one city and end in another, for example, Athens to Barcelona or Rome to London. Pay careful attention to those embarkation and disembarkation points, knowing that starting and ending in different cities could increase the cost of your airfare.

I would highly recommend giving yourself extra time on either end of your cruise. There's lots to do and see in Europe and many of the embarkation and disembarkation destinations are major metropolitan hubs. It would be a shame to fly in and out of Rome without seeing the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum or trying best pizza in Rome !

Pro Tip: You might see some cruise packages that include your hotel and flights. While certainly convenient, these packages can be more expensive than taking care of your own booking arrangements. 

3. Book Your Onshore Excursions

This is admittedly my favorite part of planning a cruise. It's so much fun to dig into all of the various things to do and see in each European city!

If you've sailed on a Caribbean cruise before, you'll want to take note here. Planning onshore excursions in Europe is a little different for one key reason: many of the European cities listed as ports are actually an hour or two drive or train from the port. You'll want to plan your day accordingly! 

For example:

• Civitavecchia to Rome is just over an hour by train or car
• Southampton to London is anywhere between 1.5 to 2 hours by train or car
• Livorno to Florence travel ranges widely from 2 hours by car to 3.5+ hours by a mix of train and bus travel

There is usually a shuttle service offered by the cruise line as an excursion if you just want transportation to the city to explore on your own. This might be easier and more time-efficient than trying to figure out public transit by yourself. Particularly in countries like Italy where you may not feel overly confident in your ability to ask for directions if you get lost!

To book a tour or not book a tour, that's the question.

Keep in mind that you may wish to do some of the big historic attractions, like the Colosseum, with an organized tour. There are a few reasons to do so:

• Waiting in lines can eat up your day onshore. And the lines can be really long. Booking a skip-the-line tour (like this one for the Colosseum ) can help you make the most of your day.
• An expert tour guide can help you gain a better appreciation for the history behind many of the places you're about to visit.
• Often, organized tours may also gain you access to places that are not normally accessible to the public. Again, this gives you a better chance of making more of your time exploring!

Of course, other areas, like Mykonos, are perfect for wandering and exploring on your own. Or you can book an independent tour like one of these best London food tours .

You won't be able to see everything in one day. The bottom line here is to do your research in advance and figure out what your top priorities are and where it may make the most sense to book with a tour group.

Part 3: Next Steps

At this point, the hard parts in planning your European cruise are out of the way. Your cruise line is booked, cabin selected, you know where you're traveling to and you probably even have a handful of excursions bookmarked.

So, what's next? Details. Small details that aren't necessarily fun, but are incredibly important.

Here are your next steps:

• Ensure your vaccinations and travel documents are in order.
• Plan your packing list . 

1. Ensure Your Vaccinations & Travel Documents Are In Order

Right now, if you're a United States or Canadian citizen, the only document you're likely to need while traveling in Europe is your passport.

Likewise, because most of the countries you're likely to visit fall within the European Union or Schengen Zone, you won't need a visa either. You'll simply be considered a "short-stay visitor," which allows you to stay within the Schengen area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Many of the non-Schengen countries included on European cruises, like Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, also allow short stay visits of less than 90 days without a visa. So unless you're planning to do some extended traveling in Europe , there's no need to fuss with a visa.

That said, European travel regulations are slated to change in the coming years. If you're looking further ahead into 2021, be aware that depending on when you travel you may need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) visa waiver. Something to keep in mind and keep an eye on.

You'll need to check with your doctor regarding any vaccines you might need for travel. While European countries don't typically require too many (or any) additional vaccines, you'll want to check in with a travel medicine specialist at least a month before you head out on your European cruise. You can also do a little research on the CDC  and US Department of Health & Human Services websites.

Packing list

You're likely to be traveling to a number of countries in a short amount of time. Make sure to plan for a range of weather. I’ve ended up buying scarfs and gloves in Norway in summer and in Italy in fall. I didn’t need them every day, but the weather was changeable and we had a day or two that was chilly.

(With this in mind it can be more difficult to  travel carry-on only , but it's not impossible.)

No matter which size suitcase you choose to pack, there are a few key items you'll want to make sure are in your suitcase before you set sail. 

The two absolute must-have items for your European cruise:

• Comfortable walking shoes for exploring UNESCO world heritage sites and walking on cobblestones
• Beach gear for warmer destinations, like the Greek Islands and South of France

Along with these key items, you’ll also want to confirm dining attire for your cruise ship, because some cruise lines offer formal dinners and theme nights. Knowing this in advance will allow you to make the most of all the fun your cruise line has to offer by packing everything you'll need.
