“We are a small privately owned zoo that provides interactive animal experiences, educational programs to schools and other organizations, parties and events at our facility. Our animals have a permanent home at our zoo. We do not breed, sell or trade animals.”

Admission in 2023 is $13 per person. Children two and under are free. Hours vary, so give a call before you go! They’re open from Friday through Monday starting in mid-June. Before that, just Saturday and Sunday.

“I highly recommend going here. The animals are very well taken care of. Their enclosures are immaculate. The animals adore the owner and are very friendly with visitors too. Lynn (the owner) is so knowledgeable about all the animals there. We learned a lot. They aren’t just animals to her, they’re like her kids and are treated that way. I can’t recommend this place enough. We did the private tour.”

5 Zoos with Capybaras to See Them Up Close

' src=

Capybaras are easy to find in zoos all over North America, but it’s not often that you get to pet them, feed them and have fun with these super friendly and cool animals.

If you’re looking for an exclusive and unparalleled capybara experience, you may have a hard time finding accurate and up-to-date information.

But what are the best wildlife preserves and petting zoos in the US that offer private tours and encounter with the capybaras?

Keep reading my article to find out the best capybara experiences in the US to check out in 2022.

What are the Capybaras and What Makes the Capybaras so Wholesome?

Capybaras facts & figures:.

Zoos with capybaras

The Capybara is the largest species of rodent on earth, is a pack animal, and shares genes with some popular pets like the guinea pigs and chinchillas.

What makes the capybara stand out is the size. An adult capybara can reach up to 70-90 kg, and the dimensions and proportions of a dog.

The rodent also has pretty impressive swimming skills and can be submerged for up to 5 minutes.

Why are Capybaras the Chilliest Animals on Earth?

Capybaras gained popularity because of their friendly and sweet attitude, not only toward other capybaras but humans and other species as well.

They seem to love human touch and react to cuddling and scratches almost as a dog would.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfueGqaXp1g

Even wild capybaras are among the most polite and friendly species.

With some cities in South America expanding into territories that were inhabited by capybaras, we’re seeing more and more how this cute animal interacts with the developed world.

Capybaras appear to be pretty smart, and have been spotted crossing the streets on the crosswalk and even waiting for cars to stop for them. Such well-behaved citizens!

In North America, the easiest way to spend some time with a capybara is to visit one of the zoos in the US that hosts capybaras.

5 Zoos with Capybaras in the US Where you can Pet Them

1. north georgia wildlife and safari park:.

Swim with the capybaras

Looking for the perfect family day? At the North Georgia Wildlife and Safari Park, you’ll be able to interact with the animals, including the capybaras. The Park also organizes “capybara experiences” available upon booking. There are three main packages available:

  • The Capybara and Friends Experience, grants you access to a petting zoo area where not only capybaras live, but also other species from South America. ($65/person)
  • The Baby Capybara Experience, allows you to hang out with the smaller, baby capybaras, and even feed them. ($49/person)
  • The Capybara Splash Experience is an August special for those looking to swim with the capybaras in the petting zoo’s pool. ($99/person)

The capybara experiences are family-friendly, however, children under 8 years old cannot participate for safety reasons.

You can reserve your spot at the next available capybara experience here .

2. Tucson Petting Zoo and Funny Foot Farm

Capybaras Near Me

The Tucson Petting Zoo is one of the few spots in the US where you can pet, feed, and play with the capybaras, in a much more relaxed setting compared to the classic zoo.

The locals love this location because of how loved and well-kept the animals are.

This is a perfect experience for children who are passionate about animals, as they can learn more about local and exotic species, and hang out with them in a peaceful environment.

At the Tucson Petting Zoo, you’ll find some classic farm animals, like goats, pigs, and chickens, but for a small fee, you’ll be able to access the Exotic Tour section, where the capybaras (and many other species) live.

The admission ticket for the capybaras petting zoo is $15, just a few dollars more than the general admission, and includes a kid-friendly tour with a knowledgeable guide.

3. Austin Zoo

Capybara encounter

Another fun and ethical way to meet with capybaras in the US is to hit the Austin Zoo.

The Austin Zoo is a registered NGO, and its mission focuses on rescuing and helping animals that have lost their home.

They don’t buy animals or ship them from exotic locations.

At the Austin Zoo, you’ll find animals that have been given a second chance: some of them were deemed too old for other facilities, confiscated due to animal cruelty, or were no longer needed as laboratory animals.

There, the animals are taken care of and live a quiet life. While Animal Encounters are available, the zoo only allows 1 group per day, and only on selected days during the week, to grant the animal enough rest.

Among the many species living at the Austin Zoo, you’ll find several Capybaras, and you can meet them.

The Capybara Encounters can be booked on the weekends, plus Monday and Wednesday.

Each encounter costs $40 and the minimum age for meeting the capybaras is 10 years old.

To book your capybara encounter, you can call the number 512.695.3021.

4. Amazing Animals Inc

Capybara farm

Amazing Animals Inc is a lovely preserve in Florida, whose mission is to promote wildlife conservation and education for people of all ages.

While Amazing Animals. Inc is mostly known for the sloths, the preserve hosts many different exotic species, including reptiles and of course, capybaras.

Booking a private tour of the whole preserve will grant you some hands-on time with the capybaras. You’ll be able to enter the capybara’s yard, pet them, and feed them freely, while the guide will teach you all about these friendly animals.

The guides at Animal’s Inc seem to have the animal’s wellbeing as a priority, so feel free to ask them the proper way to pet the capybaras, what they like, and what not to do.

The entrance fee to the tour is $50 per person, and there is no age restriction, which makes it perfect for families with smaller children.

Animal’s Inc is only open upon reservation, so book your private tour by calling 407.719.6269 or sending an email to [email protected] .

5. Cape May County Park & Zoo

Capybara experience

The Cape May Zoo has recently welcomed new capybara puppies and has opened the bookings for the capybara encounters.

The guided encounter costs $400, a price that includes up to 4 participants. Any extra participant will have to pay a ticket of $75. This is one of the most pricy capybara experiences in the US, but for true capybara enthusiasts, it can be worth it.

On the bright side, the entrance to the zoo is free and capybaras can be observed roaming freely around the premises, especially in less visited parts of the zoo.

You can book the private encounter for $400, or you can try your luck and see if you can spot the capybaras around the zoo, completely for free.

The Cape May Zoo is free, so donations are extra important! If you want to make a game out of it, decide on an amount of money to donate, and sum that amount for each capybara you meet.

Can’t Travel Right Now? Book a Virtual Encounter with the Capybaras:

Animal’s Inc also allows for virtual tours and virtual encounters with the capybaras , a great option for those who can’t travel or are stuck at home because of the pandemic.

The guides will answer the zoom call together with the animal of your choice and will share information and fun facts about the animal.

The Zoom Calls with the capybaras last 15 minutes and costs $50.

You can also book comprehensive virtual tours and meet 8 different animals on the zoom call with the 60-minutes program for $150, which is probably a better option when it comes to value for money.

Can’t have pets? Adopt a Capybara long-distance!

The Zoo of Chester in the UK allows you to adopt a capybara and support the little animal without having to commit to adopting or keeping the capybara in the house.

This is a perfect gift for your capybara-lover friend or for a child that loves nature and animals. You can check out the adoption options here .

  • The Bronze Adoption allows you to sponsor a capybara at the zoo and protect the species from going extinct.
  • The Silver and Gold Adoptions also include tickets to the zoo and some zoo-related goodies. If you’re planning a trip across the Atlantic, the silver and gold packages may be the way to go: you can adopt the capybara first, and then pay a visit to the cute animal.

What animal do you want to see next?

If you can’t get enough of cute and exotic animals, check out these guides on how to see red pandas , koalas , pandas , and even polar bears .

Tips for Visiting Sustainable Safari petting zoo in Maplewood, MN

Tamandua anteater at Sustainable Safari

Kids adore getting up close to animals. Enter: Sustainable Safari. As a wildlife biologist by training, I am always keen to find those which are ethical in animal treatment, sourcing, and care. Most folks know about Minnesota’s many zoos, but who knew there was a super hands-on petting zoo in a suburban mall? Here’s how to make the most of your visit!

Sustainable Safari Maplewood Mall

Sustainable Safari in Maplewood Mall

Maplewood is about a 30 minute drive from the Bloomington/Mall of America and Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) International Airport area. It’s an easy drive to the Maplewood Mall. For easiest access, park in the upper lot near Kohl’s and use Door 2 for entry.

aviary feeding parakeets

Once inside, Sustainable Safari is on the second level in a corner storefront. My best advice is to get there when it opens, or wait about two and a half hours after the opening time to visit. (There was a line of about a dozen people in front of us, at noon on Sunday.) You might also have good luck during the work week. The more congested, the longer wait you’ll have for animal encounters–unless you use my other piece of advice, below.

General Admission – Baseline Entry at Sustainable Safari

General admission (just to get in the doors and be able to feed the animals with the $3.00 included cup of mixed seeds, pellets, and greens.) If you want to hold or feed beyond this, you’ll have to pay for the animal encounters and feedings separately.

banded armadillo at Sustainable Safari

The site is open everyday, but check their website for hours. There are some holidays in which the petting zoo is closed.

Animal Encounters are not included in this gate fee . You will be able to lean over the fence to pet kangaroos, goats, and other animals with accessible enclosures. Feeding in this way is available to you within the general admission. I recommend this entry for grandparents or chaperones having NO interest in animals themselves, perhaps just wanting a fun day out with your loved ones and being the jolly photographer on the outside of the pen. General admission is fine if your parties’ ages are over the minimums so you won’t have to accompany them inside cages.

Goats at Sustainable Safari in Maplewood Mall

Fee-Based Animal Holdings and Feedings

There are different feeding and holding fees charged based on the experience you want. Some visitors are angered by this price scale on top of admissions, BUT, this is a way to not exhaust the animals and to pay for their special care.

Holding a wallaby baby at Sustainable Safari

Each fee allows 4 minutes of holding an animal. Thing about this based on lines – if there are ten people in line, you’re talking a 40 minute wait. So plan your allotted time for the visit accordingly. During out visit, a line of ten people was not at all uncommon.

Allow Time to Interact with Animals

Factoring in a couple kids or family members wanting to hold an alligator, feed a capybara, and hold a kangaroo COULD mean around three hours at the zoo. That’s also not including meandering around to “fish for prairie dogs” or enter the avian enclosure to enjoy the budgies. For me, it’s an easy two hours on-site but could stretch longer for larger families and more interest in encounters.

Sustainable Safari Tips for a Great Visit

Let’s get this out upfront — this is NOT like visiting Como Zoo. You’re going to spend some money for this special experience. $14.50 at the doors, per person is the MINIMUM you can figure out for your budget. The feed cup included not going to get you a ton of interaction. I equate this to Zoo Tampa or Safari North or any other zoological visit — you’ve gotten in, now you’re likely going to pay that $5.00 to feed a leaf of romaine to a giraffe.

Feeding an anteater chicken-flavored baby food at Sustainable Safari

Manage Your Time and Get the Most for Your Money

Please go into this experience with a different mindset than an average zoo visit. You WILL be paying more for the unique and safe access to these incredible animals. The atmosphere is safe for visitors and animals alike. If the hundreds of guests through the doors ALL had free reign with the babies in the enclosures, they wouldn’t have any respite from stimulation. So try framing the experience as what it truly is — incredible, rare access to some of nature’s most interesting animals!

bottle feeding a baby goat at Sustainable Safari

Guided Sustainable Safari Tour

If you have one kid you plan to treat for their birthday or something special, I highly recommend the Guided Safari Tour option. Yes, it’s $180 + $14.50 admission. BUT, the food needed for interaction is included for the animals you’re working with. You get SO MUCH information and the care and patience of a dedicated animal care specialist. Find out all the clever names of the residents and extra information that you won’t get with the general holding queue. If you have the funds to manage this, it’s bar none the best option for a high quality experience at Sustainable Safari.

Asian otter who loves cuddles!

Pouch Packages

Special “pouch packages” are offered for a middle-of-the-road experience that is both affordable and enjoyable. Some are dedicated to reptiles like bearded dragons and snakes, while others cater to the kangaroo crowd. These experiences are less-expensive than the full guided tour but offer a lot more intimate encounters than general admissions and paying for a holding.

Magnificent teenage alligator held by Safari Bob

Holdings and Feedings at Sustainable Safari

This is still a wonderful way to get kids and adults alike nearer to animals to learn about them, and hopefully, foster life-long learning interest and respect for the creatures who inhabit this earth with us! You’ll get 4 minutes (they have timers, so rest-assured, you get every second to soak up the snuggles of a baby animal or alligator or whatever delights you!)

Lemur with beautiful eyes being fed at Sustainable Safari

You can also opt for an up-close feeding of a Lemur or Binturong (bearcat) which is incredible, too. Learn about lemur matriarchy communities while you hand them food favorites or marvel at how gentle the intimidating bearcat can be when it nibbles a grape out of your fingertips. These animals are very sensitive to germs and stay in their cage during the experience, but it’s still one-of-a-kind and memorable.

Final Thoughts and Advice for a Satisfying Sustainable Safari Visit

The optimal visit would be during a low attendance time to cut back on wait times. The Family Feed Cup offers up a seed stick for the aviary for the members of your party and some apples and sweet potatoes, and a lot of lettuce and seed/pellet mix. The fruits and veggies are key for most residents taste buds.

Try to game out your time – the aviary is a short wait. Emus, prairie dogs, guinea pigs, and goats are available almost endlessly to interact with through the fence. Wear minimal clothing (jewelry, draping tops and sweaters, anything loose) as some animals will nibble and tug at anything they find to chew on.

Display of feeding costs at Sustainable Safari.

Be patient. These animals are constantly handled and human-raised in most cases. You are in THEIR home and you must exercise full respect and be gentle! This is a very special experience and you really do get what you pay for in terms of unique interaction and time with the animals.

Family feed cup (minus the apple slices and sweet potatoes)

I heard one request for a refund during our visit. I couldn’t help but think the party likely did not do their research. They probably thought they’d pay $14.50 and have the keys to the animal kingdom. Realize this is not a typical zoo. Alter your attitude to remember you’re not staring at these animals through glass panes and the upkeep of their clean cages and quality food takes operational budget. For the best experience, save up for this epic petting zoo experience and find the interaction level that suits your interests and financial abilities.

Petes exotic animal safari

Up close and personal.

Kevin Peterson grew up on an exotic animal farm, and has finally been able to realize his own dream of having a safari of his own. 40 different animals fill the little zoo on the west edge of Grand Island, including 7 endangered species. Many of the animals are rescued or have been rehabilitated and can not be released back into the wild, while others were born to pairs within the safari.

Children (and adults too) love feeding the animals. Bottle feedings of the young animals are a regular occurrence visitors can be a part of. Pete's Safari welcomes groups, regularly giving tours to classrooms or taking their safari on the road to underprivileged neighborhoods around Grand Island.

We live in the area but have never been until today. Wasn't too hot outside so it was enjoyable. My boys both liked feeding the animals. It is pretty pointless to not feed them as most of the animals you can and adds to the experience. This is a walk through style with gravel. It can be uneven in spots. Restrooms are small and they have port a potties around the park for guest use. They have a few shaded (umbrella) areas to sit if needed.

So, so happy to have learned of this place. Great family place, but also great for any animal lover. My husband and I had so much fun feeding and petting the various animals. (And since it was just the two of us, we drove a couple of miles down the road to Cedar Lake Cellars for wine and lunch when we were finished.) Admission is $10 for adults. Check the website for all current pricing. It was $5 for a large cup of feed and $3 for refills when we went.

A surprise around every corner! We stayed at a local motel to attend a near by family reunion and a large group of us from young to old went! Easy to say a good time was had by all! We happened to be there when it was time to feed the alligators and that was jaw dropping!! Needless to say Big Joel is impressive himself, but all the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable! Will definitely go again.

We had more fun than going to the St. Louis zoo. Even my teenager loved it. You can get so close to the animals.

The greatest rural zoo I have visited. Wide variety of creatures. Interactive experience with very many of the animals. Camel rides. Great displays! Reasonable prices, Annual(passes) prices not much more. Ran by a tremendous couple with well trained staff.

We LOVE Big Joel's Safari! It's a great interactive petting zoo with a large variety of animals. It's small & flat so those concerned about too much walking or hills don't need to worry. It's gravel though so wear appropriate closed toed shoes. The staff are friendly and answer lots of questions & Big Joel is usually out and about interacting with guests or feeding his animals. There isn't a lot of shade so plan your visit accordingly. It can be bright & sunny in many spots. The website has all the pricing info. Our kids used about 3.5 large cups of feed, took a pony ride & fed the parakeets. They look forward to going every year!

We are big fans of Big Joel's! There is not a lot of shade so plan accordingly. My kids love feeding all the animals, especially the birds. Pro-tip: feed the birds first thing in the morning as they're hungrier & fly around more. Our kids love the playground area too.

Photo of Paige G.

Awesome covid-safe place to be! It was an extremely hot day but there was plenty of covered areas to take a breather. Also lots of stops to wash your hands especially after feeding the animals. Worth it to buy the cup of feed and the bird feed sticks. Grab a serving spoon if you don't want to get a slobbery hand. Head into the bird cage and watch your step so you don't smoosh a bird!! If you don't mind being covered by dozens of birds, do it- very cool. Beautiful animals who have space to run around. So much to see. We happened to meet Big Joel who was incredibly kind- please support this business!! Not much to do in the area but this place is worth it!

I had a great time here, many of the animals are happy to come up to you to be petted, the cost to get in is minimal at $8 and for $4 you get a large cup of feed with a giant spoon (whoever came up with the spoon idea is a genius) so you don't need to get your hands super slobbery every two minutes. Refills on the large cup are $2. They have deers, peacocks, alligators, lemurs, camels which you can ride again after covid is over, kangaroos and many other animals. It's an hour drive from Saint Louis City to come out here and it's definitely worth the visit!

4 Zebras Broke Free on a Highway. A Rodeo Clown Stepped In.

One zebra was still on the loose, after it and three others escaped a trailer in North Bend, Wash. Dozens of people scrambled to help and corralled some of the animals.

4 Escaped Zebras Spotted on Washington State Highway

Four escaped zebras were seen on a road in north bend, wash., on sunday..

Those — are zebras. What is going on? We are here in North Bend, and somebody has lost their zebras. What the hell? What is happening? Oh, my God. Please get away. Hi, buddy.

By Michael Levenson

Four zebras escaped from a trailer on a highway exit in Washington State on Sunday, leading dozens of residents, police officers and volunteers to join in an effort to corral them.

Among them was a person with particular expertise in wrangling loose animals: David Danton, of Mount Vernon, Wash., who worked for nearly 15 years as a rodeo clown and rodeo bullfighter.

He and his wife, Julie Danton, had been driving home from a cattle drive in eastern Washington when they stopped to help the police and neighbors capture the zebras in North Bend, Wash., about 30 miles east of Seattle.

“It was kind of divine intervention — we happened to be in the exact spot and had the knowledge,” Ms. Danton said.

Mr. Danton said he built some makeshift gates out of rope, metal panels and a garden hose, and got two of the zebras to run into a pen on a horse farm. Then, he said, he helped build an “alleyway” out of metal panels to usher the zebras safely into a large trailer.

“It worked out as well as it possibly could have,” Mr. Danton said. “It’s just about being quiet, working them gentle and not getting excited.”

Still, he said, “Nobody trains you for wrangling zebras.”

Kristine Keltgen said she had bought the zebras from a farm in Washington State and was hauling them on Interstate 90 on Sunday to the petting zoo she runs in Anaconda, Mont., when she saw that the latch on the zebras’ trailer was loose.

Ms. Keltgen said that when she stopped on a highway exit in North Bend to fix the latch, the zebras “bolted out.”

“It happened really fast,” she said in an interview on Monday.

As the animals began scampering through traffic and onto residential streets, dozens of police officers and neighbors, along with the Dantons, rushed to the scene.

“Animal control showed up to help, police showed up, and every neighbor showed up to help — or just look at the zebras — because it’s not every day you get zebras in your neighborhood,” said Megan Dammann, a North Bend resident who runs a kennel-free dog boarding and doggy day-care business.

She said she raced to the area after seeing a post about the zebras on a community Facebook page. While the Dantons helped corral two of the zebras on a horse farm, residents nearby helped shoo a third zebra into a fenced-in yard and then shut the gate, Ms. Dammann said.

“It was kind of a fabulous group effort, which is what you do here,” Ms. Dammann said, whether the lost animal in question is a dog, a cat or a zebra. “In North Bend, that’s what you do.”

Whitney Blomquist ran to her front porch after seeing the zebras on her security camera. Three were outside her home, she said, wandering near an R.V.

“They looked right at me and walked right toward me,” Ms. Blomquist said. “You’d think you’d have to go to an African safari to be with zebras and here I am standing on my front porch, and they’re 10 feet away from me. It was just insane.”

Ms. Keltgen said she was incredibly grateful that so many strangers helped her capture three of the zebras, and she was hoping the fourth would still be found. It was still on the loose on Monday, she said.

“I met some of the best people you could possibly meet,” Ms. Keltgen said. “It was a negative experience that turned out to be very positive. We just have to get our last zebra back and we will be all better.”

Ms. Blomquist said she was keeping her eyes open.

“I keep looking at my cameras every time they go off,” she said. “We’re just aware it’s out there.”
