8 hot cruises you’ll need to book at least 1 year in advance – maybe even 2!

Fran Golden

You might think that with all the cruise ships out there — many carrying thousands of passengers — you have all the time in the world to book your cruise. The reality is that some itineraries, and certain cabin categories on many sailings, sell out a year or more before the ship leaves the pier.

Don't get left behind on dry land when you could be relaxing at sea. If you're interested in the following cruises, you'll need to plan a year or more in advance.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

World cruises

one year cruise

World cruises have always been hot sellers, so much so that fans carefully checked emails, newsletters and social media, and checked in with their travel agents so they would know exactly when their favorite cruise line was putting out its latest multi-month itinerary, often years in advance. The plan: Book immediately to ensure you get your preferred cabin category.

Pent-up demand to see the world and the ability to work from anywhere has increased the stakes. Lines such as Viking , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises , for instance, have all had world cruises sell out in days, hours — even minutes.

"Sometimes the cruises sell out even before they are publicly announced," says Rob Clappers, president of Q Cruise & Travel in Chicago.

That was the case with a 150-day sailing on luxury line Regent's 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner planned for 2025. It sold out in June 2022 (that's 2.5 years in advance) because clued-in past passengers filled the ship during its preview sale — even at fares ranging from $87,000 to $250,000. The public never had a chance to book.

Short-season destinations

If you are targeting a vacation in a destination that does not have a year-round cruising season, such as Antarctica or the Arctic , you will want to make your reservation a year in advance. New expedition ships are sailing in both markets, but they carry no more than 500 passengers. (Ships with more passengers are not allowed to make landings in Antarctica.) Well-established operators such as Abercrombie & Kent, which charters ships from Ponant, sell out Antarctica cruises a year or more in advance.

Other popular seasonal itineraries also fit into the must-book-a-year-in-advance category.

"If you wanted to circumnavigate Iceland, especially on small ships such as Windstar , you better plan well in advance as there are not that many sailings," says Clabbers. The same is true if you have on your bucket list such places as the Northeast Passage or Northwest Passage, where sailings are limited.

Alaska is another market where it pays to check itineraries as soon as they are announced, especially if you want to explore more remote ports on a small ship or want to stay in a suite.

The top suites

one year cruise

On any cruise, the fanciest suites tend to sell out quickly because they are highly desired and limited in number. They also come with a bevy of attractive perks.

On select Norwegian Cruise Line ships, for example, guests in The Haven suite complex have access to a private lounge, pool, sun deck and restaurant. MSC Cruises ' MSC Yacht Club is a similar concept. Select Royal Caribbean ships have an exclusive suites-only restaurant and lounge, and a few even have a private sun deck for suite guests. Royal Genies (personal butlers) tend to the needs of those in the line's Royal Suite class , encompassing the fanciest accommodations.

You will need to book a year in advance, too, if you want to stay in a suite on a river ship with lines such as Uniworld, AmaWaterways and Viking, as these accommodations are limited yet highly sought after on the small vessels, Clabber says.

If you are looking to cruise very high-end, book far in advance.

Repositioning cruises and one-off itineraries

When a ship is repositioning or otherwise doing an interesting one-off itinerary, demand can be huge. This might be the case, for instance, when a ship is moving from Australia to Indonesia or from Tahiti to Australia, with stops in the South Pacific.

"Some transatlantic repositioning cruises the lines can't sell for the life of them, which is why they are often so inexpensive," says Clabbers. "But other ones, especially on smaller ships and to destinations that are unique, it's a different story. They sell out well in advance."

Related: Best transatlantic cruises, plus tips and what to expect

Holiday sailings

Holiday and New Year's sailings tend to be in high demand, and holiday-themed sailings such as Disney Cruise Line 's Very Merrytime cruises are particularly popular. You'll want to keep this in mind and plan well in advance, especially if you are looking to celebrate the holidays with your extended family and require several cabins.

"What comes into play on holiday cruises is that children are off school, and so now you are talking about a multigenerational group going on a trip," says Clabbers. "If you want to have a suite for the grandparents and a couple of nice rooms or suites close by for the children and grandchildren, those may be in limited supply."

New ships and routes

one year cruise

Fans of specific cruise lines get very excited when a new ship comes out and will book the inaugural sailing and other early sailings a year or more in advance. This is the case, for instance, with lines such as Disney Cruise Line (with Disney Treasure debuting in late 2024 and another new ship in 2025) and Cunard Line (with Queen Anne arriving in spring 2024), as these lines don't often bring out new ships.

If a ship can brag of being the world's largest (Royal Caribbean's 7,600-passenger Icon of the Seas ) or the world's most luxurious (Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 750-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur ), it is bound to attract an enthusiastic crowd and sell out far in advance.

When a ship moves to a new destination that the line has not visited before, whether Hawaii or Norway or elsewhere, expect a surge in interest and early bookings. This is also the case when a cruise line expands its market, such as Viking (known for ocean and river sailings) launching expedition cruises .

Special event and theme cruises

Book a year in advance if you are looking for a cruise tied to a once-a-year event; these cruises are hot tickets. Examples include cherry blossom season in Japan, the Monaco Grand Prix, the Cannes Film Festival and Carnival in Rio.

Cruises commemorating significant events also sell out quickly — such as cruises themed around the 80th anniversary of D-Day or the total solar eclipse in 2024.

The same planning in advance applies to popular theme cruises , which tend to sell out with previous guests taking the majority of cabins. These include the annual Star Trek cruise and Outlaw Country Cruise, featuring live music, themed parties, celebrity meet-and-greets and enthusiastic fans. Sign up for notices that will let you know when bookings open and get on the waitlist as early as you can.

Pet-friendly cruises

one year cruise

Assistance dogs aside, there is only one option for sailing with your pet dog (or cat) : a transatlantic cruise on Cunard's Queen Mary 2. While you indulge in afternoon tea and attend dress-up affairs in fancy ballrooms, your pet is pampered in a posh kennel. Space is very limited.

"If you are interested in taking your dog across the pond on Queen Mary 2, the kennels sell out a year or more in advance, and within a couple days [of] when the new itineraries come out," says Clabbers. "In this case it's about the puppy not getting space rather than the human passenger."

Insider Today

Royal Caribbean is launching a 274-night cruise around the world to set sail in 2023.

Prices start at $61,000 per person.

In a press release on Wednesday, the cruise line said it was "the longest and most comprehensive world cruise out there."

The company said the Ultimate World Cruise, set to depart from Miami, would visit more than 150 destinations in 65 countries on all seven continents.

Royal Caribbean said stops would include Casablanca in Morocco; the Great Barrier Reef in Australia; Antarctica; Brazil, where passengers can see the Christ the Redeemer statue on New Year's Eve; and Beijing.

The cruise starts at $61,000 per person

The inaugural cruise is scheduled to depart from Miami on December 10, 2023, and return on September 10, 2024.

Passengers would travel on the Serenade of the Seas , which has 13 decks and a mini-golf course, an arcade, a rock-climbing wall, a pool, a theater, and a spa. The ship can accommodate almost 2,500 passengers and more than 800 crew members, Royal Caribbean said.

Prices start at $61,000 for a person in an interior stateroom, rising to $65,000 for an oceanview stateroom and $79,000 for a balcony stateroom. A stay in a junior suite starts at $112,000 per person.

Royal Caribbean said passengers would get a 10% discount if they pay in full by January 6, 2023.

The pandemic ground world travel to a halt last year, and cruise lines' revenue plummeted . Carnival Cruises said in June 2020 that it would sell six cruise ships after posting a $4.4 billion loss.

With the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, the industry has rebounded .

"Now more than ever, people have resolved to travel the world and make up for lost time," Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean, said in the press release.

The Ultimate World Cruise is split into four legs: the Americas and Antarctica, Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and northern Europe. Passengers can book them individually rather than opting for the full nine-month trip.

Bookings opened on Wednesday for Royal Caribbean's loyalty-program members at the diamond level or above and will open on October 27 for all other passengers, the company said.

Royal Caribbean said it would announce prices for the four individual legs of the trip when bookings for them open in December.

How Much It Costs to Live on a Cruise Ship For a Year

Who hasn’t gone on a cruise and thought, “I could do this forever”?

Cost to live on a cruise for a year feature image

The idea of retiring from the rat race and living out your days on a cruise has great appeal for some people.

There’s no cleaning, no cooking, and no lawn to mow. You don’t have to worry about doing the dishes or paying an electric bill. There’s always something going on, new people to meet, and every day you wake up to some of the most beautiful views in the world.

Add to that the fact that internet access allows many to work remotely from anywhere, and wi-fi is widely available on any major cruise ship. That means even if you don’t want to completely retire, but instead work from the cruise ship , it’s technically possible.

Of course, not everyone can run off and live on a cruise ship, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dream.

And the first question that comes to mind when you think about escaping is how much it would cost to live aboard a cruise ship?

Is the total cost even realistic? That’s why we priced out the cost of living on a cruise ship for an entire year.

The result? Just know that you’ll definitely need to open your wallet to live full-time in paradise. But it might be less money than you think.

Where You’ll Spend Money on Your Cruise

Cruise ship docked at Port Canaveral

Head to any cruise website and you’ll see plenty of cheap headline prices. Cruises starting at a few hundred dollars for a week are common. At first glance, it seems like living on a cruise ship would be amazingly affordable.

After all, a cruise for $500 a week would cost only $26,000 to sail for a year. For many people, that would be cheaper than living on land!

But anyone who has been on a cruise knows those headline prices are just the start of what you pay . In fact, in our opinion it’s a bit disingenuous of the cruise lines to advertise those prices. After all, what you’ll actually pay is much, much more.

Here’s an idea of where you’ll spend money beyond the headline fare:

Double Occupancy Cruise Fare: Apart from a few sailings that offer solo cabins, any headline price you find is actually only half of what you will pay for cruise fare. That’s because cabins are typically sold based on double occupancy, but prices are shown per person.

So for a fare that’s $599, it will actually cost $1,198 based on double occupancy. Even if you are sailing solo (unless in a solo cabin), you will still have to pay this “double” charge.

In other words, whenever you see a cruise price, double it right away for what you’ll really pay in fare.

Port Fees & Taxes: We all expect to pay taxes on things that we buy. It’s no different for a cruise. However, the taxes aren’t included in the headline cruise fare. As well, cruise fares will also have port fees tacked on. These are per-passenger fees paid to ports of call for the privilege of docking.

These fees vary, but in general, expect about $100-$200 per person for a seven-day cruise.

Gratuities: Sure, at the end of the day gratuities aren’t a required cost (you can adjust them as necessary), but in practice they are usually considered a charge that you’ll have to pay. They also add up quickly.

At around $18 per person, per day, a couple traveling on a week cruise will pay about $250 in gratuities. Over the course of a year on a cruise ship, that amount comes out to more than $13,000!

Onboard Spending: Anyone who has taken a cruise knows that what you pay in cruise fare is the start of what you’ll spend during your time on the ship.

From drinks to wi-fi to specialty restaurants, there are plenty of extras to spend on the ship . And even if you are a frugal sailor, you won’t go any lengthy time without having a few drinks or signing up for the internet package to check in back on shore.

We Priced a Year’s Worth of Cruises to Get a True Cost

With all of these expenses in mind, we dove into what it would cost to live on a cruise ship for an entire year.

chart of cruise prices over the course of a year

Of course, when it comes to cruising for twelve months, you have an amazing number of options. From different cruise lines to routes, departure ports, ships, and even cabin types, there are a number of things that will have a big impact on what you spend.

That’s why we aimed to keep everything simple. To price what it costs to live aboard the ship, we took a look at sailings aboard a single ship from Carnival, which is known for being affordable. In this case, we priced a year’s worth of sailing for Carnival Celebration in 2025.

Carnival Celebration is a newer ship from the cruise line that sails six, seven, and eight-day itineraries year-round from Miami in 2025. That means you could sail the entire year without having to change ships and always come back to a homeport in the United States.

The routes that the ship sails would take you all across the Caribbean, from Cozumel to Aruba, from Curacao to St. Thomas. Because it is a bigger and (relatively) newer ship in the Carnival fleet, you’d also have tons of amenities and activities on board, as well as a many restaurant options — including Guy’s Burger Joint .

As for the cabin, in our search we opted for a balcony cabin. Yes, you would be able to sail for cheaper in an oceanview or interior cabin, however, we assume that if you are aboard the ship for an extended period of time, having your own balcony is a must.

As well, we assume a couple is sailing with two people to the room.

Summing up, here’s what we searched for our prices used in this estimate:

  • Cruise Line: Carnival
  • Ship: Carnival Celebration
  • Time Period: January-December 2025
  • Homeport: Miami
  • Room Type: Balcony
  • Number of People: 2

Here’s How Much It Costs to Live on a Cruise Ship

So how much does it cost to sail on the Carnival Horizon for a year? We estimate it to cost around $194,000 for two people , although that number can vary from person to person, depending on their spending habits .

Here’s an overview of where you’ll spend, and we breakdown each expense below:

Cruise Fare: The largest expense by far is cruise fare. Pricing a balcony room for each of the dozens of cruises the ship sails in 2025, it totaled $106,176 . Factored out, that's about $2,040 a week or $8,850 per month. Keep in mind this is for two passengers on the ship and includes the bulk of what you'll spend on a cruise, including your cabin, entertainment, and food.

Port Fees & Taxes: There's no escaping taxes, even on a cruise out at sea. Pricing out our cruises, the taxes and port fees for two people totaled up to $19,279 for the year. That comes out to a little more than $1,600 a month.

Gratuities: One of the perks of being on a cruise is that you are waited on hand and foot. But it doesn't come free. Carnival charges $16.00 per person, per day for automatic gratuities. Over the course of a year, that adds up to $11,648 in tips paid to staff.

Onboard Spending: How can you know what you'll spend on the ship over the course of a year? It's impossible to know for sure, and different people will spend different amounts. For example, do you need to have a drink package every day of the year? Or are you fine drinking water or juice? Are you a gambler? How often do you want to eat at specialty restaurants?

While you can't pinpoint exactly what you'll spend, you can get a good estimate. As a public company, Carnival Corporation (the parent of Carnival Cruise Line) publishes detailed numbers about their business. For instance, in 2023 the company took in $14.1 billion in ticket revenue and $7.5 billion in onboard spending.

So onboard spending across all of its lines was 53% of ticket revenue. For every $1,000 in cruise fare, the average person would spend about $530 on the ship.

Using this metric, with a total cruise fare of $106,176, the average couple would spend $56,804 onboard during the course of the year. However, it's likely that the figure would be drastically lower as average spending on the ship will likely be less if staying full-time versus splurging for a short vacation.

Total Cost: Adding up tickets, port fees, taxes, gratuities, and onboard spending, the total estimated cost of living on a cruise ship for a year is $193,907 for a couple -- or about $97,000 per person. Without onboard spending, it comes out to $137,103 or $68,552 per person.

Too Expensive? Here's How to Lower the Cost

There's no doubt that it's expensive to live on a cruise ship, but there are ways that you can trim that amount. If you're interested in cutting down the price, here are a few ideas.

Limit Onboard Spending: In our estimate, we used the average spending Carnival Corporation sees across all its cruise lines, which is 53% of the cruise fare.

You don't have to spend near that much. After all, when people cruise they are on vacation and likely willing to spend more freely than they would normally. By limiting the amount spent on board, you can cut thousands off this estimated total.

It's doubtful you can get by without spending at least some money, but our estimate comes out to about $550 per person, per week. Being able to spend less than that should be relatively easy.

Older Ships: Our estimate is aboard the Carnival Celebration. We chose this ship because it is relatively new (meaning you'll have the most amenities for a long-term stay), but it also runs a regular schedule from Miami.

That said, in general newer ships like Celebration are more expensive to sail aboard. If you look for older ships, you should be able to cut the price down.

Be Flexible for Cheaper Trips: For this estimate, we priced out a year's worth of cruises on a single ship. This makes it easy if you're sailing long-term; you simply stay on the ship and don't have to worry about changing ships, or ports.

If you want cheaper options, however, you might find them by being more flexible with changing ships and/or cruise lines when you find a deal. That's where sailing from a port like Miami -- which offers a lot of options -- can be beneficial to your pocketbook.

Avoid Expensive Times of Year: In our search, the sailing aboard the ship varied dramatically due to the time of year. For example, the most expensive cruise aboard Celebration during the year was during the peak summer season and ran $1,599 per person. The least expensive cruise ran $829 per person -- or about 50% as much.

If you have the ability to take a few weeks off here and there during the expensive times of year, it can lead to big savings.

What about the VCL Victoria Cruises Majestic ship? Set to sail this fall, it’s a true long term residential ship that will circumnavigate the globe in 27 months from Fort Lauderdale. There is still space available! Price points and discounts vary based on how long you lease your cabin -ranging from 6 month’s minimum up to 37 months and beyond. About 500 cabins have been sold so far- adults only. And it’s all inclusive of internet, most drinks, laundry service, housekeeping of course, room service, etc.. All the standard things you’d find on a cruise ship. See this article that was posted today by one of the future residents! https://www.allwaystraveller.com/continents/worldwide/circumnavigating-the-globe-for-two-years-on-a-residential-cruise-ship

I would love to see the cruise lines cater to single seniors, they would be surprised how many would travel all the time….I personally would like to do three months, but the cost is just too high! Maybe there is a singles travel cruise group that I can join. Any suggestions out there?

Someone young wrote this article. Carnival is not the line most people would choose to cruise for a long period of time. On the Oceania Marina we met a couple cruising for several months and a charming older man who was cruising for 180 days. The couple had sold their house & were having a new house built, so homeless for a period of time. The older man was single &, I think, rather lonely so the ship life provided him nice social opportunities to talk to people. Here’s more info; “After record demand for its 2023 world cruise, Oceania Cruises has unveiled the itinerary for its epic global voyage for 2024. The cruise line’s 180-day journey around the world will set sail on January 14, 2024, and visit more than 96 destinations in 34 different countries.

“Incredibly, last year our 2023 world cruise sold out in just one day, so for 2024 we are providing guests more extended voyage options to deeply and meaningfully rediscover the world,” Howard Sherman, President and CEO of Oceania Cruises, said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure.

Oceania’s “Around the World in 180 Days” cruise will depart from Los Angeles and cross more than three oceans and 15 seas as it makes its way around the globe to New York. The journey, on the Oceania Insignia, stops at more than 100 UNESCO World Heritage sites with 24 overnight stays.

Passengers will journey across the Pacific, through French Polynesia and Australia before continuing onto destinations like Japan and Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay. The voyage continues along the shores of India and the Arabian Peninsula before sailing across Europe and completing its route across the Atlantic in New York.

The 2024 “Around the World” journey starts at $48,499 per person and includes roundtrip first-class airfare and amenities like prepaid gratuities, laundry, and luggage delivery. During your days at sea, you can keep yourself busy with spa appointments, art workshops, the casino, cabaret, and four open-seating restaurants — not to mention the daily afternoon tea service accompanied by a four-string quartet. There is also a fitness center and sports deck, and of course, a saltwater pool with two hot tubs.

As usual, catering mostly to people who have the means to do this without blinking. It is time for older single seniors on a fixed income to be able to be able to cruise on a non party boat. A tranquil, voyage, letting go and actually hearing the sounds of Mother Nature, not a floating amusement park. That would be amazing.

It would only be me living on the ship, cant i spilt that cost that I would have if i had a spouse? so would that be about 60k ?

I think this is not taking into consideration the rewards systems that most cruise operators have which would reduce the fare, even in a balcony cabin. I could never do it since the state of cruiseline wifi is still pathetic!

Another way to do it vs estimated$175k year is to buy in to a condo cabin on the new state of the art Narrative from Storylines.com. Sails around world in 3 1/2 years starting at $5000 a month 2 people all inclusive , starting 2024!

😂😂😂 with prices starting at $400,000 and rising to $8 million

What about when someone needs care/hospitalisation etc….. Surely you would need a private medical insurance policy, which would get progressively more expensive as you aged?

I’m sure. This article only focuses on the costs of sailing for the year. Other costs aren’t considered.

Good information but why does long term stay/full time cost is so high. you would think there be discount especially for seniors. Also price for solo why double? I think it sounds like fun how about travel for 3 months first to try out. Sea sick is that a common element to consider for most? People with restricted diet such as vegetarians do they get the meals prepared? Are some classes offered for free? classes such as dancing or crafts part of the activities? Thanks

the price for double occupancy is basic international hotel rates. The cruise ship is basically a floating/mobile resort hotel. All cruise lines came onboard with the double occupancy in 2010. before it was fare and half to cruise solo. If you get a good cruise line that you like, most have a loyalty program that after so many cruise points you will be charged fare and a half for solo travel. 3 months would be a good trial to see if you like it, sea sickness is not really a problem as these ship travel well. you can put in for restricted diet before going on a cruise so should not be a problem long term – might be you have to request every week. Main Dinning has a veggie meal every night and the buffet style cafe onboard allows you to select what you want. You can even get Kosher meals. most Classes are free as well as activities. buy the drink package that is suitable to your habits. your excursions will cost you but after a few weeks you may be done with excursions and it is all about enjoying the ship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full itineraries for world cruises typically last anywhere from around 100 to 180 days, though Royal Caribbean International 's Serenade of the Seas is currently sailing the longest world cruise at 274 days. If you're not able to set sail for three to five months (or longer), some cruise lines also offer select, shorter segments of their full world cruise itineraries or grand voyages, which are typically two to three months in length.

World cruise fares can vary significantly between cruise lines. Some lines advertise cruise-only fares, which do not include meals at specialty restaurants, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, excursions, some entertainment, or other expenses. On top of that, many cruise lines' base prices exclude port fees and taxes. Given the length of a world cruise, even small expenses can add up after several months on the ship and in ports around the globe. Typically, travelers can expect to spend a base fare of about $15,000 for an inside cabin and as much as $90,000 (or more) for luxury accommodations and an all-inclusive fare.

If you're considering sailing beyond 2025, Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently announced its 140-night 2027 world cruise, World of Splendor, sailing from Miami to New York. For example, guests on boutique cruise line Azamara's 2025 world cruise will receive $25,000 in benefits, including $3,000 for shore excursions, 13 exclusive events and much more. Oceania's " simply MORE" offer includes $8,200 in shore excursion credit, as well as many other amenities.

If you're sailing with a larger cruise line, it's also possible to find deals that may include shore excursions or onboard credit you can use for booking tours. Holland America Line offers guests an early booking bonus that includes a list of additional perks, including one complimentary shore excursion, $2,000 per person in onboard credit ($4,000 for solo travelers) and more. MSC Cruises includes 15 free shore excursions and other perks when you book its world cruise.

You may want to consult with a travel agent specializing in cruises to see what additional perks they can offer if you book your world cruise through their agency.

Royal Caribbean International's 274-night Ultimate World Cruise, which set sail in December 2023, will visit all seven continents before guests disembark in September 2024.

Holland America Line's 132-day Grand World Voyage cruise aboard Volendam in 2026 will also visit seven continents, circumnavigating the globe. The epic journey will include a four-day Antarctic experience.

This 3-year Cruise Visits 135 Countries on 7 Continents — and It Might Cost Less Than You Pay in Rent

Welcome to the Work From Ship life.

one year cruise

Want to set sail and just keep going? Life at Sea Cruises just announced it’s accepting reservations on its first-ever, three-year cruise, which will travel 130,000 miles, visit 135 countries across seven continents, and stop in 375 ports of call, all aboard the MV Gemini .

At each port, the vessel will stay docked for multiple days to allow its passengers to explore at their leisure. It visits 13 wonders of the world, including Egypt's Pyramids of Giza and Mexico's Chichén Itzá, and more than 100 islands, including numerous Caribbean and Central American visits. The cruise also spends 98 days in South American and Antarctica.

The ship provides everything one would need to live at sea for several years, including spacious cabins, dining and entertainment options, recreational areas like a wellness center, sun deck, and pool, and plentiful work spaces for those who want to live the digital nomad life at sea. That includes a business center with meeting rooms, 14 offices, and a business library for all Zoom call needs.

“Professionals need connectivity, the right amenities, and the functionality to perform their jobs. There is no other cruise product that offers this sort of flexibility to their customers,” said Mikael Petterson, the managing director of Life at Sea Cruises, in a statement released to Travel + Leisure .

The ship also has other practical amenities, including a 24-hour hospital, which offers guests free medical visits, learning experiences for guests like lectures and classes, and volunteer opportunities at various ports.

“Life at Sea Cruises offers the ultimate cruise without having to sacrifice the comforts of home,” Irina Strembitsky, director of sales and marketing, added in the statement. “It’s your home at sea with the world as your backyard.”

The three-year voyage departs from Istanbul on Nov. 1, 2023, with additional pick-ups in Barcelona and Miami later in 2023. Pricing begins at $29,999 per year. The company also offers payment options starting from $2,499 per month, which includes food and beverage. Cabin options range from 130-square-foot interior rooms to 260-square-foot balcony suites. The Year Tom Cruise Gave Not One but Two Dangerously Vulnerable Performances

Twenty-five years ago, the superstar starred in “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Magnolia,” and opened himself up for the camera in ways he rarely has since.

A photo collage shows Tom Cruise in various poses and with various expressions from “Magnolia” and “Eyes Wide Shut.”

By Amy Nicholson

Amy Nicholson is the author of “Tom Cruise: Anatomy of an Actor,” examining 10 signature performances.

“Eyes Wide Shut” had a blunt sales pitch: Cruise. Kidman. Kubrick.

The poster didn’t need much more. Audiences already knew plenty. At the peak of his clout, having just earned his second Oscar nomination, for “Jerry Maguire,” and publicly launched his production company with “Mission: Impossible,” Tom Cruise and his wife at the time, Nicole Kidman, ditched Hollywood to quietly make a dirty movie in England with the legendary director Stanley Kubrick. The shoot was supposed to last six to eight months. It took 15.

‘’People say: ‘You’ve lost 40, 60, 80 million dollars. You’ve lost all this money. You’ve lost all this time,” Cruise told The New York Times a year before its anticipated release. “To have a chance to work with Stanley Kubrick,” he added, “that’s worth it for me.”

Talk about risky business. The second half of 1999 would prove to be the diciest period of Cruise’s career with the release of two back-to-back films that dared him to expose his private vulnerabilities. The first, “Eyes Wide Shut,” released 25 years ago this summer, was a cerebral and slippery tale about a husband named Dr. Bill Harford who wanders Manhattan for two nights as vague vengeance upon his wife for fantasizing about another man. It was hawked as Cruise after dark — the movie star and his spouse, the ascendant Kidman, inviting people into their bedroom to see how they slept, smooched and argued .

Cruise sacrificed a year and a half of his life for what he hoped would be his major contender, the film that might finally earn him an Academy Award. But ironically, it was the other role that got him an invite to the ceremony: an outrageous supporting bit as the seduction guru Frank T.J. Mackey in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ensemble drama “Magnolia” that Cruise had shot in just three weeks. Of the two performances, it’s by far the most personally revealing.

At that time, Cruise was a promiscuous director-gatherer, rarely working with the same filmmaker twice. He aimed for heavyweights: Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, Rob Reiner, Ron Howard, Brian De Palma, breaking his ronin inclinations only to make “Top Gun” and “Days of Thunder” with Tony Scott. On “Thunder,” he had fallen in love with Kidman and made another film with her, too — “Far and Away” — and neither had been critically acclaimed.

Cruise hoped Kubrick would change their ho-hum streak, disregarding the hard-won wisdom he’d learned more than a decade earlier when he dinged his post-“Risky Business” momentum to play a forest imp in Ridley Scott’s “Legend.” That flop also suffered from a metastasizing shooting schedule (four months turned into 12) and an auteur more focused on style than emotional substance. After returning from Britain, he told Rolling Stone that he felt like merely “another color in a Ridley Scott painting.”

“I’ll never want to do another picture like that again,” he vowed. Well, he had. He’d even gone back to Pinewood Studios in London.

KUBRICK WAS NEVER an actor’s director. His staggering filmography included only two performances nominated for an Academy Award: Peter Ustinov in “Spartacus,” and Peter Sellers in “Dr. Strangelove” (only Ustinov won). Kubrick’s genius was the star. On “Eyes Wide Shut,” a passion project since the 1960s, his casting priority wasn’t talent — it was convincing a married couple to enlist. (His first choice was Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.) Tabloid scrutiny was what Cruise and Kidman believed they’d gone to the great master to escape, only to have Star magazine allege that Kubrick had to hire on-set erotic experts to teach them how to make love. (Cruise not only denied the accusation, but sued over it.)

Fans expecting nudity should have known better. Despite earning the title People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 1990, Cruise disliked pitching himself as an object of desire, refusing to let marketers promote his first blockbuster, “Top Gun,” with shirtless photos of him playing volleyball. In four decades, he has filmed only one genuinely erotic scene — his first-date clinch with Renée Zellweger in “Jerry Maguire” — and a couple of giddy tone-benders that combine sex with death ( torturing a victim in “Interview With the Vampire”) or sex with musical comedy ( duetting with Malin Akerman in “Rock of Ages”).

But Cruise bore the blame when the peek into his life fans had been promised turned out to be a pent-up study of male insecurity. (At an early screening of “Eyes Wide Shut,” LA Weekly reported walkouts and one viewer huffing an expletive.) Critics expecting a charismatic performance at least were also disappointed, with many dismissing Cruise as flat and out of his depth.

“Stanley was not that specific about what he wanted,” Kidman told Time Out London. Yet, Cruise, who developed an ulcer during the film, never said a word against Kubrick, even after filming 95 takes of walking through a door. To this, let me add that it seems difficult for any actor to build a character when they’ve got no idea which one of a hundred versions their director wants — and there’s reason to question whether Kubrick was even using Cruise’s best takes. As the editor Gordon Stainforth said of splicing together “The Shining,” good performances were often rejected in favor of “the most eccentric and rather over-the-top.”

WHILE IN LONDON, CRUISE watched “Boogie Nights” and learned that its director, Anderson, also happened to be in town. Cruise invited him to the set and afterward, Anderson pledged to write him something “un-turn-downable,” as he explained to The New York Times. Six months later, Anderson sent him a script with another sexually frustrated character: a self-proclaimed “master of the muffin” who never even touches a woman onscreen (and the women he knows find him obnoxious). Humping the air for his rowdy male acolytes, Frank might just be a locker-room faker, a try-hard hysteric, an immature blusterer who tries (and fails) to impress a female TV journalist by vaulting into a mostly naked backward somersault with his pants bunched around his ankles.

Cruise was 36 and, for the first time in his career, he would be older than his director — a new-school ’90s Sundance darling. Still, he was determined to impress Anderson, too.

“He’s like, ‘Do you want me to stand on my head, do you want me to do back flips? I’ll do it, I’ll do anything you want,’” Anderson recalled to Rolling Stone .

Cruise’s Frank Mackey is an electric performance — a huckster Elvis roiling with hostility — and in my opinion it should have won him an Oscar. (I say this with zero offense to Michael Caine, who took home the supporting actor prize for “The Cider House Rules” and joked affectionately that the prestige would have lowered the mega movie star’s price tag.) Statuette aside, Cruise deemed it “the perfect character to play after Bill Harford.” Kubrick bottled him up; Anderson cut him loose.

Yet, Bill and Frank share key points of connection. Bill learns that sex is danger, with missed connections involving one sex worker with H.I.V. and another who ends up possibly murdered. Frank’s mission statement is “Seduce and destroy” — and he seems most passionate about inflicting pain. Neither character enjoys the raunchy thrills people imagine he’s enjoying, and both of them hide their real selves under masks (the wealthy doctor literally) as they set out to convince the world of their success and power.

Bill stalks the East Village believing he wants to even the score with his wife, but he’s just piqued there’s an even richer and more powerful crowd that hasn’t yet invited him to their secret orgies. And Frank has buried his entire past — the years caretaking for his late mother, the rage and hurt he feels toward his estranged father, his own last name — to resurrect himself as a carnal superhero whose mind-control powers appear to work only on other men.

The films even share two identical scenes. The first is a long, mute stare as Cruise’s characters discover themselves completely emasculated by women they’ve underestimated — a crucial pivot point in both movies. The second comes in a climactic collapse before the family member who cut them so deeply that they’ve dreaded coming home. Both men stumble toward the unconscious body of their bittersweet beloved — Bill’s sleeping wife, Frank’s dying father — struggling to keep their emotions in check. Then they burst into sobs.

Cruise’s own father, Thomas Cruise Mapother III, was “a bully and a coward,” he told Parade magazine in 2006. Like Frank, Cruise lopped off his dad’s surname to build his reputation on his own. The elder Mapother died of cancer just before his son flew to London for “Legend.” Cruise visited him on his deathbed. It was the first time they’d seen each other in years, but they didn’t talk about the past. Cruise just held his hand.

Not long after, he opened up about that last goodbye. “It cleared up a lot of kind of fog that I had about the man,” Cruise told Rolling Stone in that 1986 interview. “It’s all sort of complex. There wasn’t one thing I felt.”

“I don’t know what I would have done without my work,” he continued. “It gave me a place to deal with all those emotions.”

And “Magnolia” gave him a place to honor them. That two-minute take in which Mackey breaks down at his father’s bedside is the most naked Cruise has ever been onscreen — an authentically heart-rending moment of release.

I believe that the first two decades-plus of Cruise’s career, from that famous sunglasses-and-socks skid in 1983 to that infamous ( and overblown ) couch jump in 2005, is one brilliant, underestimated performance after another, a superstar dominion so dazzling that audiences missed the subtle acting underneath. Yet, even amid this rarefied winning streak, the films he released in 1999 stand tall as testimonies to his courage. Today, Cruise is more acclaimed for braving risky stunts, not risky roles. I hope he dares himself to bare it all for the camera again.

What is a crew appreciation fee? Why 1 major cruise line is raising the price

This summer brought lots of buzz around " tourist taxes " and other fees that can get tacked on to normal travel expenses. Now, another fee that may be familiar to avid cruisers is increasing on one major cruise line.

The so-called "Crew Appreciation" fee is a daily amount that's automatically added to a guests' onboard accounts with Princess Cruises "to recognize the efforts of a wide variety of crewmembers who contribute to the experiences of all our guests" and are pooled and distributed throughout the year in compensation and bonuses.

Travelers will pay slightly more starting later this month depending on the type of accommodations they book, according to the cruise line , which last raised the price in February 2023.

Echoing recent headlines surrounding updates to airline baggage prices , Princess Cruises' Crew Appreciation fee is rising by just $1 per person, per day in various classes of cabins.

Travelers in suites will see a $19 daily fee, while those in mini suites, cabanas or Club Classes will pay $18. Guests in all other staterooms will pay $17.

"The crewmembers eligible to receive these funds work in various departments, many of whom rotate among different ships, throughout our fleet of ships," Princess states on its website . "Guests have complete discretion to adjust these crew appreciation [fees] while onboard; however, crew appreciation may only be adjusted prior to disembarking the ship and not refundable post cruise."

Travelers can choose a prepaid crew appreciation option while managing their booking, but if it's not adjusted up to the time a passenger settles up the account prior to disembarkation, the payment becomes final and nonrefundable.

Full details of the policy are available on the Princess Cruises website.

Peter Kafka, who covers media and technology as chief correspondent for Business Insider, joined Brad Mielke on Wednesday's episode of "Start Here," ABC News’ flagship daily news podcast, to discuss the content of Zuckerberg's letter, Facebook's approach to moderation and how tech companies work with politicians. START HERE: When you hear about misinformation, it can sound really academic.

Police capture 'aggressive' water buffalo that had been on the loose for days in Iowa

Police in Iowa said they have captured a "dangerous," injured water buffalo that had been on the loose since Saturday. The Pleasant Hill Police Department said the animal was transported Wednesday morning to the Iowa State University Veterinary Hospital after being located in Des Moines the previous evening. The capture followed a dayslong search that at one point saw an officer shoot the animal, nicknamed "Phill" by some in the community, and sightings of the water buffalo in yards and on a home Ring camera.

Trump posts campaign video of Arlington National Cemetery visit after 'incident'

The Trump campaign released a TikTok video of the former president's controversial visit to Arlington National Cemetery on Monday where cemetery officials said, in a statement to ABC News, that a photography-related "incident" occurred, leading to a report being filed. While the cemetery did not immediately provide specifics, NPR reported that a source had told the publication that two Trump campaign officials engaged in a verbal and physical altercation with a cemetery staff member during Trump's visit, which came on the third anniversary of the deaths of 13 service members during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The alleged altercation took place after the Trump campaign officials were asked not to take photos and videos in Section 60, a section of the cemetery where recent U.S. veterans are buried, NPR reported.

The indictment comes the same day the CEO was released from police custody after being arrested in connection with an "ongoing judicial investigation," prosecutors told ABC News.

How did Democrats talk about issues at a DNC devoted to ideals?

Last week, the Democratic National Convention worked to keep up a party-like atmosphere filled with music and celebrities, and its central message seemed to revolve around themes like "joy" and "freedom." Viewers who tune into political conventions are usually already committed to the party, but this optimistic tone was likely part of their key efforts to drive enthusiasm (and eventual turnout), both by amping up their base and persuading the handful of undecided voters who could make a difference in this era of razor-thin election margins. Of course, conventions serve another purpose, too, and that's to outline the policy differences between the parties and highlight the issues that make them look best to voters.

Polaris Dawn mission launch further delayed due to 'unfavorable weather,' SpaceX says

Embarking on a new chapter of private space exploration, the Polaris Dawn mission is poised to make history by launching four private citizens into ultrahigh orbit and attempting the first civilian spacewalk. The mission, however, has faced a series of delays due to a ground-side helium leak and weather conditions, according to SpaceX. Led by billionaire Jared Isaacman and in collaboration with SpaceX, the crew aims to reach as far as 870 miles above Earth, the highest altitude of any human spaceflight mission in more than a half-century since the Apollo program.

Sea-Tac airport computer outage is ongoing. Here’s what travelers should know

A cyberattack hit systems at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport over the weekend, causing headaches for airline staff and long lines for travelers.

As of Tuesday – just days ahead of one of the busiest travel weekends of the year – airport systems were still down with no clear timeline as to when outages would be resolved.

Airport officials aren’t sharing much about what happened as the incident is still under investigation, but spokesperson Perry Cooper said Monday the outage occurred after “nefarious characters” were seen on the airport’s computer system early Saturday, prompting officials to turn off the entire system.

Cooper said the airport is working with federal agencies to investigate the cause of the incident and would not comment on possible motives behind a cyberattack.

This has resulted in the movement of luggage through the airport getting badly snarled and long lines at some ticket counters, among other issues. Here’s what travelers should expect if they are flying through Sea-Tac in the next few days.

What systems are affected?

As of Tuesday, the airport’s website and app, ticketing computers for smaller and international airlines, and baggage sorting are all still experiencing outages.

Wi-Fi and phone systems inside the airport, departure and arrival boards, and the airport’s lost-and-found tracking system are also down.

Computers at “common use” check-in counters, or ticketing desks that are shared by multiple airlines, are off. Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country and all international airlines are among those especially affected because they do not have their own dedicated system within the airport, Cooper said.

The airport’s largest airlines, like Delta or Alaska, have not been affected because they have their own computer system, he said.

Those airlines with computer outages have begun handwriting boarding passes and bag tags for passengers who check in in person.

Because computers that operate the airport’s baggage check are down, airport and airline staff have had to manually sort bags to their proper gate and bag claims. This had led to some delays in both departing flights and bags arriving at their destination, Cooper said.

In a post on Tuesday, the airport said it was making progress in restoring elements of its baggage system and that staff is using “a variety of methods to ensure bags reach their aircraft.”

Are there long security lines?

No, lines through security checkpoints have remained at normal levels.

The Transportation Security Administration’s systems at airports across the country are on their own secure system, which has not been affected by this outage, said Greg Hawko, TSA’s federal security director in Washington.

He encouraged everyone traveling, especially those who may choose to carry on a bag instead of checking it, to remember TSA’s rules for what to pack .

What can travelers do to have a smooth experience?

Mostly, travelers can expect long lines at ticket counters and possible delays in flights as staff work to ensure everyone and their bags make it onto their planes.

Lines through security checkpoints have remained smooth, Cooper said, and most of the wait is concentrated at the check-in area.

He encouraged travelers to avoid visiting a ticket counter, if possible. That means downloading a mobile boarding pass through an airline app or printing a physical ticket at home and leaving their checked bags at home.

“If you can travel without bags, just carry ons, please do so at this point,” he said.

If a traveler does need to visit a ticket counter, they should plan for extra time. Those traveling on affected airlines should arrive at least three hours early, Cooper said. Those who are traveling internationally and are planning to check a bag should give themselves as much time as possible, he added.

What about cruise ships?

The Port of Seattle’s maritime phone systems and website are out, but cruise ship operations are continuing as normal, Cooper said.

Where to find more information

While airport systems remain out, those looking for updated flight and gate information should check individual airline mobile apps or websites.

The airport is also posting updates on the Washington Ports website and its YouTube channel periodically.

The Port of Seattle, which also operates the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, said it was hit with a “possible cyberattack” that appeared to affect websites and phone systems. Latest fatal landslide in Alaska kills 1 and injures 3 in Ketchikan, a popular cruise ship stop

JUNEAU, Alaska — (AP) — A landslide cut a path down a steep, thickly forested hillside and crashed into several homes in Ketchikan, killing one person and injuring three in the latest such disaster to strike mountainous southeast Alaska.

The landslide Sunday afternoon prompted a mandatory evacuation of 60 nearby homes in the city, a popular cruise ship stop along the famed Inside Passage in the Alaska panhandle. The slope remained unstable Monday, and authorities said that state and local geologists were arriving to assess the potential for further slides.

Four homes were critically damaged, officials said, and homes next to the slide area were still being assessed. Several homes and businesses reported flooding.

Last November, six people — including a family of five — were killed when a landslide destroyed two homes in Wrangell , about 100 miles (161 kilometers) to the north. Torrential rains were blamed for landslides that killed two people in Haines in 2020 and three people in Sitka in 2015.

“In my 65 years in Ketchikan, I have never seen a slide of this magnitude," Ketchikan Mayor Dave Kiffer said in a statement. “With the slides we have seen across the region, there is clearly a region-wide issue that we need to try to understand with the support of our State geologist.”

He said the loss of life was “heartbreaking, and my heart goes out to those who lost their homes.”

Ketchikan officials on Monday identified the victim as Sean Griffin, a 17-year veteran of the city’s public works team who was clearing stormwater drains with a co-worker when they were caught in the landslide.

“It was his commitment to the community that caused him to respond to the call for assistance during his scheduled time off,” a statement from Ketchikan Gateway Borough Clerk Kacie Paxton said.

The landslide followed a weekend bout of rain amid an abnormally dry August, said Andrew Park, a meteorologist in Juneau with the National Weather Service. The weather service early Monday said Ketchikan had received about 2.6 inches (66 millimeters) of rain in about 36 hours, though rainfall totals at higher elevations nearby ranged from 5 to 9 inches (127 to 229 millimeters).

Landslides can be unpredictable, but this one occurred without certain other risk factors, such as high winds, Park said.

“There weren’t any of the big red flags we would normally see,” he said.

Leah Canfield was trying to nap when the slide struck. She saw a flash of light — she initially thought lightning, but it was likely an electrical conductor exploding, she said — and then her house started rumbling. She woke her spouse, and they grabbed their dogs and headed outside.

“When we started coming down the stairs, we’ve seen that, you know, there’s a lot of debris that was flying around outside our office window and realized, you know, that this is probably much bigger than just an earthquake,” she said.

They found that their neighbor’s home had plunged downhill, part of it coming to rest in their front yard. Another two-story house next door partially collapsed and slid into a different home, knocking it off its foundation. Trees, debris and a telephone pole landed on the roof of Canfield’s home, but Canfield said she believed the house could be salvaged.

After calling family members to let them know they were OK, they walked about 20 minutes to a hotel, because their pickup truck was buried by uprooted trees.

Ketchikan is surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, a temperate rainforest that encompasses much of southeast Alaska. Landslides strike often in the region, but garner little notice when they hit remote, unpopulated areas.

But as climate change intensifies storms and destabilizes soil, they are posing more risk to communities.

Because of the steep terrain, there's limited room for development in the region, and cities and roads are built at the base of slopes. Increasingly, landslides are occurring in inhabited areas of “old infrastructure that’s been built in harm’s way," said Aaron Jacobs, a meteorologist and senior service hydrologist with the National Weather Service’s Juneau office.

“It’s just becoming more and more common that they’re impacting people,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs planned to travel to Ketchikan on Monday to study the soil composition in the area and try to pinpoint why it occurred when the area had been in a period of drought before the weekend’s rainfall.

“We’re going to learn more about this and hopefully we can figure out what caused it and then we can move forward on it,” he said.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy declared an emergency for Ketchikan, while Kiffer and Ketchikan Gateway Borough Mayor Rodney Dial issued a separate emergency declaration. A shelter was set up at Ketchikan High School.

Two of the victims in Ketchikan were admitted to the hospital and one was treated and released. All other individuals were accounted for, the city and borough said in a joint statement.

Michael Robbins, the superintendent of schools in Ketchikan, said in a statement on social media that a dozen people were staying at the shelter at the local high school as of Monday morning.

But people often stay with friends or relatives after such events, so it remained unknown how many were displaced.

Power was restored to some of the area by 8:15 p.m. Sunday. Other areas will remain without power while the landslide is cleared and broken power poles are replaced.

Landslides include debris flows often triggered by heavy rains. When logging or fire destroys trees, the loss of root structure can weaken soil. Rain that isn't being sucked up by plants can saturate the ground, making it more likely to slide. Other types include creeps, which move slowly downward, and rock falls.

In Alaska, melting permafrost, retreating glaciers, earthquakes and pounding rains can all trigger landslides.

This story corrects the last name of the borough clerk to Paxton, not Paxon.

Thiessen reported from Anchorage, Alaska. Leah Willingham in Charleston, West Virginia, contributed.

Jack Conklin believes he can still play at high level — at left tackle, too — after latest serious knee injury

' src=

  • August 28, 2024

one year cruise

BEREA — When Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson fell into Jack Conklin in Week 1 last year, he destroyed the left knee of Cleveland’s right tackle.

“It was ACL, MCL, PCL, meniscus, so it was the whole shebang,” Conklin said Tuesday.

#Browns Jack Conklin recounts the knee injury that included torn ACL, MCL, PCL and more. pic.twitter.com/CY0loFgZWR — Scott Petrak ct (@ScottPetrak) August 27, 2024 Advertisement

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

A torn anterior cruciate ligament is bad enough. Add on torn medial collateral and posterior cruciate ligaments and torn cartilage, and a long and brutal rehabilitation gets even more miserable.

“It was a lot,” Conklin said after his first practice since the injury. “I knew what it took unfortunately, but fortunately also I have a great mindset towards it. I knew that I could come back from it and play at a high level again.”

Four QBs make initial 53-man roster; Siaki Ika, D’Onta Foreman, Michael Woods II among the cuts

Conklin, who turned 30 on Aug. 17, already had plenty of experience returning from serious injuries, particularly to his knees. His left ACL tore during a playoff game with the Titans in January 2021, his right patellar tendon ruptured with the Browns in November 2021 and his elbow dislocated earlier in 2021.

He’s played 22 games and missed 29 over the last three seasons.

“When you go through these rehabs, can’t look at the day-to-day, you got to look back week to month and just start to realize I have come a long ways,” he said. “You might not see the results right away, so you got to look at the whole picture.”

Greg Newsome II feels ‘great’ to be back, confident he’ll be ready for opener, looking forward to facing CeeDee Lamb

Conklin signed a four-year, $60 million extension in December 2022 that keeps him with the Browns through 2026 with big salary cap numbers. Despite the contract and being a two-time All-Pro, his role is unsettled.

Dawand Jones replaced him last year, was impressive in 11 games before season-ending surgery for a torn MCL and looks like a long-term starter. Jedrick Wills Jr. has been the starter at left tackle since he was drafted No. 10 in 2020.

“I’m just going to work hard and see how things play out and that’s just my mindset is to help the team any way I can,” Conklin said of potentially being the odd man out.

#Browns Jack Conklin on possibility of playing LT until Jedrick Wills Jr. comes back. pic.twitter.com/R964VCFbhW — Scott Petrak ct (@ScottPetrak) August 27, 2024

Given his injury history, Conklin’s best role could be as the insurance policy on both sides. He may be called upon immediately to fill in for Wills.

Wills had surgery in December to repair a torn MCL and missed all of the offseason and preseason. He passed his physical and was activated from the injured list Monday but isn’t ready to practice. Conklin played left tackle at Michigan State, moved to the right side as a rookie with Tennessee in 2016 and has been there since.

“I’m ready to just be out in the field,” he said. “If left’s the side I start, I play at, then I’m excited for the opportunity and I played it all college, so it isn’t a foreign thing to me.

“It’s something that I did for a long time at a high level.”

Notes: Mike Hall Jr. placed on Commissioner’s Exempt List, not allowed to practice or play

The Titans had eventual three-time Pro Bowler Taylor Lewan at left tackle, so Conklin was moved to the right. He believes the experience switching will help if he’s asked to replace Wills for the opener Sept. 8 vs. the Cowboys.

“It’s a challenge I’ve already done,” Conklin said. “It’s a little weird with the hips and moving, but otherwise from a mental aspect, it’s just flipping everything in your head, it’s the opposite.

“It’s really not that big of a deal, it’s just doing it. So if that’s what they want, then just getting the reps and starting to feel good.”

Every offseason he practices the left tackle stance and drops to keep a balance. Coach Kevin Stefanski won’t say if Conklin will work at left tackle, but he was practicing the pass sets during a training session last week.

More important than left or right is if the knee is ready for Week 1 despite the layoff and lack of training camp and preseason repetitions.

“We’ll see. It’s about getting out there and it’s really just about seeing how the knee reacts, and so far it’s reacting great,” Conklin said. “I’ve done this type of thing before where I’ve come back from a season-ending injury and played early in the season.”

He hasn’t lost faith in his talent.

“That was the bummer last year is I felt like I was playing some of my best ball in the preseason and camp,” he said. “I have total confidence in myself for playing. I haven’t lost a step, it’s just about getting back out there and going again.”

Hitting the practice field Tuesday meant a lot. He knew the number of days since he was driven off the field in a cart at Cleveland Browns Stadium and credited the quick return to the surgeons and training staff.

“It was great just mentally getting back out there, just being with the guys and being a part of things and running around and having a helmet on,” Conkin said. “It’s been a long time coming. I looked at the sheet today and this is Day 352 since I did it, so it doesn’t feel like it’s been that long. It’s a great feeling.

“It feels like normal again.”

The road back was brutal, but Conklin said he never considered retiring or asked “why me again?”

“No, no, no. This is my profession and I feel like I can still play it at the same high level when I’m healthy, so it’s just about getting back to that,” he said. “It’s football and if a 280-pound guy falls inside your leg, there’s no rehab or strength that’s going to stop that from blowing out your knees. So it’s one of those things that it’s a freak thing, but it happens and I had the opportunity to rehab it and get back.”

Left guard and good friend Joel Bitonio watched Conklin and running back Nick Chubb rehab throughout the offseason “putting in the time, putting in the effort.” Conklin’s surgeon decided to fix all the damage at one time, while Chubb had two surgeries to repair a torn ACL, a torn MCL and damage to the medial capsule and meniscus suffered in Week 2 against the Steelers. He will start the year on the physically unable to perform list and must miss at least the first four games.

“We spent almost every day with each other and we push each other and make fun of each other for different stuff just to make a little competition and keep things light,” Conklin said. “So it was fun to create a stronger bond with him throughout the process.”

Conklin’s return to practice was special for Stefanski.

“I think about guys like Jack and guys like Nick and I get to see them work every day,” he said. “I mean, it’s every day for those guys and there seemingly were no days off and they’re in the training room, they’re in the weight room. And it can be a grind physically, it can be a grind mentally.

“So for anybody that then gets back out on the field, it’s a very big deal. So good to see Jack out there, good to see him working. And really good to see all the work that he’s put in get him to this point.”
