(KUTV) – Travelers coming to and from Salt Lake City International Airport can see the new airport beginning to take shape.

Now you can take a virtual walk through the totally new airport.

Airport officials released the virtual tour Thursday, allowing users to see what the airport will look like when it is completed.

The virtual tours walks passengers from the drop-off area, into the terminal and then down the concourse.

It also shows the many art installations that will be featured in the new airport.

Airport construction continues at a brisk pace toward the completion deadline of Fall 2020 .

The new airport is not using any local tax dollars in its construction and will replace the current airport which was built in 1960.

Some figures about the new airport:

The central terminal building is 866,087 square feet and cost $485,833,622 to construct.

The building used 11,007 tons of structural steel and 22 miles of steel piles.

The terminal will have 18 escalators and 25 elevators.

The baggage system has 6.2 miles of conveyor that runs from drop off to the central screening facility.

A large art installation titled “The Canyon” will be integrated on both walls of the new terminal. The Canyon will evoke the Salt Lake City landscape and spans 362 feet—roughly the length of a football field. The floor to ceiling height of The Canyon is approximately 50 feet.

Salt Lake City International Airport Guide

Salt Lake City International Airport is a major airport located in Salt Lake City that serves more than 26 million passengers each year via two terminals, five concourses, and 71 gates. While the airport is large enough to oversee about 370 domestic and international departures every day, it’s usually not too busy and it's easy to get around. As the airport is just six miles from downtown Salt Lake City (right off of I-80), it's easy to get to as well. Unless the weather gets very severe, SLC still moves flights along; in fact, it has won awards for its ability to remove snow and get planes de-iced.

Major work is taking place throughout 2020 as the city is building a new airport right next to the existing one. The first phase is slated to open in September 2020 and phase two will open in 2024. Depending on when you fly, it’s worth checking the airport’s website for any updates.

Salt Lake City International Airport Code, Location, and Contact Information

  • Airport Code: SLC
  • Location: 776 N Terminal Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84122
  • Website: https://www.slcairport.com/
  • Flight Tracker: https://www.slcairport.com/airlines-flights/arrivals-departures/
  • Airport Map: https://www.slcairport.com/maps/airport-terminal-map/

Know Before You Go

Salt Lake City International Airport is a neatly organized airport that’s large enough to handle major airlines, but not so large that it’s a problem to navigate. Although there are two terminals and five concourses, you don't need to catch a shuttle or train to get between any of them.

Expect the usual lines at ticket counters, kiosks, and security lines, but in general you should be fine arriving one-and-a-half to two hours ahead of your scheduled flight. You’ll likely have time to spare to look around at shops, grab a bite to eat, or kick back at your gate.

SLC is a Delta hub, so a great majority of the arriving and departing flights are served by Delta. However, 10 total airlines serve this airport: AeroMexico, Alaska Airlines, American, Delta Air Lines, Frontier, JetBlue, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, SkyWest, Southwest, and United.

The drop-off area is outside Terminals 1 and 2 in the right lane, while the pick-up area is in the far left lane. For those coming into the city and hailing an Uber or Lyft, you will need to cross a street to get to the pick-up area; numbered sections make it easy for your ride to find you. If you need a rental car, there’s a bevy of car rental companies in the lower level of the parking garage.

Salt Lake City International Airport Parking

Salt Lake City Airport has plenty of parking. Short-term parking is adjacent to the terminals and convenient for both pick up and drop off. If you need to park long term, you’ll find long-term parking to the south and west of the terminals. You will need a shuttle to get to and from those areas; free shuttles run every five minutes.

Rates vary by where you park. Premium reserved parking on the first level of the garage is $55 for 24 hours, while garage parking on levels 2 and 3 is $35 for 24 hours. Hourly parking on the first level of the garage is $2 for the first 30 minutes, and $1 for every 20 minutes after that. Long-term economy parking is available for $10 a day; passengers will need to take a shuttle to get to and from the lot. There are also 41 spaces for those with disabilities. These spaces have extra-wide stalls and cost $10 for 24 hours.

Driving Directions

Getting to and from Salt Lake City International Airport is relatively straight forward. The airport is located about 15 minutes from downtown (just off I-80 exit 115B), and is also easy to get to from other parts of town. You may find some traffic during peak times or rush hour, but traffic is rarely extreme. You can also reach the airport from Bangerter Highway. The speed limit is lowered once you’re on the approach to the airport; take note that police officers can and do pull people over for going over the speed limit.

Public Transportation and Taxis

You can get to SLC via public transportation pretty easily. The TRAX light rail green line stops at the south end of Terminal 1 every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends. Trains operate from 5:42 a.m. to 11:27 p.m. on weekdays, and 6:31 a.m. to 11:11 p.m. on weekends.

You can also catch UTA buses from outside the UTA Welcome Center at the south end of Terminal 1, and also outside of Terminal 2 near baggage claim 8. UTA routes 453 and 454 both provide limited service on weekdays. There’s no bus service to the airport on weekends.

Shuttles, limos, and taxis are available outside of baggage claim, at door 7 in Terminal 1 and door 11 in Terminal 2. Uber and Lyft are both able to operate at the airport; the pick-up areas are marked by signs in the middle traffic lanes outside of baggage claim for both terminals.

Where to Eat and Drink

Salt Lake City International Airport has a pleasant array of places to eat, from sit-down restaurants to places where you can grab a quick bite. Café Rio in the Terminal 2 food court is a tasty fast casual spot; the freshly made tortillas are delicious, as is the creamy tomatillo dressing. The Gordon Biersch Brewery (Terminal 1) and Squatters Airport Pub (Concourse C) are go-to spots for food and beer, while Vino Volo (Concourse E) is great for wine. Look to Starbucks (Terminal 2 and Concourse E) or Pinkberry cupcakes (Concourse C) to treat your sweet tooth. If you want an easily portable meal for the plane, Fresh Market (Terminal 1) and Cat Gora’s Gourmet Market (Concourse F) are both good options.

You can find dietary restriction information right on the airport’s website, including which restaurants serve gluten-free, organic, vegetarian and vegan options.

How to Spend Your Layover

Salt Lake City International Airport is only six miles from downtown Salt Lake City , meaning that you can conceivably leave the airport during a longer layover. Catch TRAX outside Terminal 1 and take that right downtown for your layover adventure. While you're in the city, you can visit Temple Square and take a free tour, go shopping, visit the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art or Clark Planetarium, or go out to eat at any number of restaurants.

If you’d rather stay at the airport, there are plenty of stores to explore—including Brookstone, Salt Lake Duty Free, and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory—as well as massages and mini spa treatments at XpresSpa (Concourse F).

WiFi and Charging Stations

To access the airport's free WiFi, open your network connections, select SLCAirport.wifi, and agree to the terms in a browser window. Charging stations and outlets are available throughout the airport, though you might find many of them taken if your gate is crowded.

Salt Lake City International Airport Tips & Facts

  • SLC ranks well for on-time departures and arrivals.
  • You can get to 10 major ski resorts within an hour’s drive, and to several national parks within a couple hours.
  • The airport has an art collection that includes 113 pieces by Utah artists. You can check out the collection in passenger connectors, at the top of Concourse F, or along Concourse G. Look for “Art Tour” signs where you can learn more about each piece.
  • You can enjoy some pretty beautiful views of the Wasatch Mountains while you're in the airport. Head to the windows on the east side of SLC for a glimpse.

Old Salt Lake City airport's iconic World Map finds a new home at the new airport

By carter williams, ksl.com | posted - aug. 26, 2024 at 5:05 p.m., the world map, which was in the former airport for 60 years, has been reinstalled in the concourse b plaza at the new salt lake city international airport in salt lake city. it will be open to the public when phase 3 opens oct. 22. (kristin murphy, deseret news).

Estimated read time: 4-5 minutes

SALT LAKE CITY — An iconic piece of the old Salt Lake City International Airport has a new home inside the new facility for passengers to see later this year.

A team of masons completed the reinstallation of the airport's 64-year-old World Map this summer, adding it to the entrance of Concourse B from the new Central Tunnel, which is set to open on Oct. 22 along with five new gates.

"This is kind of a continuity of history," said Chandler McClellan, construction deputy program director for the airport's redevelopment program, as he stood on the World Map Monday. "We want people to feel and see what was here originally."

Becoming a 'focal point'

The map dates to about 1960, three years before the facility officially became Salt Lake City International Airport. The architectural firm Ashton, Evans and Brazier designed the massive 38-foot-by-38-foot map; stoneworker Julius Bartoli constructed it out of terrazzo so it could be placed inside what was then a new airport terminal. It ultimately serves as a bit of a time capsule from this era because it features one of the airline's existing routes as of 1960.

It would also go on to become a beloved feature of the airport for 60 years.

Placed near the entrance of the old terminal, many families — especially families of Latter-day Saint missionaries — would stand by where a loved one was headed to or coming from. Parents would show children places they flew to and children would run up to a country and pretend they were eating in that country, airport officials fondly remember.

It was the "focal point" of the airport, former airport police Chief Craig Vargo once recalled.

"Anyone who was coming to the airport could say, 'Meet me at the World Map,' and anyone who had been to the airport would know exactly where to go," he said, in a history of the facility compiled by airport officials.

Yet, its fate was left in question as work began on a new airport facility in 2014 — and getting it done turned into a major technological feat.

An 'arduous task' to save the map

Project officials weren't confident they could save the map, airport spokeswoman Nancy Volmer said.

Jake Bingham, project manager for Finn Wall Specialities, explained the company couldn't find any record of a terrazzo preservation extraction project quite like what was required. Its total weight and the fragile nature of the artwork required it to be taken out in pieces.

"Just the taking it and moving it out in pieces and then putting it back in — that had never been done," he said, adding that he figured his company would have to build a replica of it if airport officials wanted it so badly.

However, how construction crews installed Bartoli's map proved to be the factor that saved the map from being destroyed.

IMS Masonry was called in to extract pieces of the terrazzo flooring outside of the map. Masons found that a bond-separating slip sheet was used between the terrazzo and the floor, which made it possible to extract the map without destroying it, said John Kunz, project manager for IMS Masonry.

So in late 2020 , months after the old airport closed, crews came in and began work to salvage the map.

"Once we got the first piece, it was a breath of fresh air," he said. "Once we did that, I knew that we had it, and we could extract it."

The team broke it off into 75 pieces — each about 4 feet by 4 feet in size and 400 pounds in weight — in a way that it could be seamed back together and repolished once the construction crews were ready to build an extension to Concourse B.

Those pieces remained in storage until earlier this year when the map was reinstalled by a set of escalators at the northern end of the Central Tunnel. Because of its size and location, it required additional work to the frame of the building so the building could support the map's weight, McClellan said.

"It was an arduous task," Bingham added. "It's something that I wondered, at times, if it could be done. But here it is and we're on it. It's complete."

An old, but new 'center attraction'

McClellan believes all that work will be worth it.

The World Map is one of a few new art installations passengers will notice in the Concourse B expansion. It is surrounded by a second canyon wall art piece similar to the art installation in Concourse A leading to the Central Tunnel.

The Central Tunnel itself is an art feature replicating rivers that flow through Utah's canyon walls. There are a few other outdoors-themed art elements planned out for this section of the growing airport.

Once open, McClellan expects that many — especially those who remember the old airport — will fall in love with the World Map once again.

"The lion's share of people coming out (to Concourse B) will take (the Central Tunnel) and see this right here," he said, pointing down at the map. "It really is the center attraction of this facility, in my opinion."

Incheon International Airport (ICN) in Seoul, South Korea

The Korean tourism board offers several free, guided tours of Seoul for passengers with a 5-24-hour layover. Reserve your tour ahead of time online, email [email protected] or visit the ticket desks on the third floor in front of Gates 25 or 29, or at desks 41 and 42 on the first floor between Gates 8 and 9.

Keep in mind these tours are first come, first serve and you'll be able to choose between a one-hour, two-hour, three-hour, four-hour or five-hour version depending on how much time you have. The variety of places you'll visit largely depends on which tour you take — the one-hour version only takes you to the Haedong Yonggung Temple, for instance, while the longer five-hour tour includes stops at Bukchon Hanok Village, Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeok Palace and Gwangjang Market, among others. More details about each tour option can be found here . Each transit tour has an English-speaking tour guide and is free, however you must pay for meals and admission fees to get into the various attractions it visits. It's also possible for passengers to do more than one tour if the length of your layover allows it.

Narita International Airport (NRT) in Tokyo, Japan

Note that you are responsible for any transportation and entrance fee costs that may occur. Visit the Transit Tour Desks at Narita Airport, located in both Terminal 1 and 2, to book your adventure.

Istanbul Atatürk Airport (IST) in Turkey

Free city tours of Istanbul are available for international transit passengers flying with Turkish Airlines who have a layover of 6-24 hours. You don't need to reserve your tour ahead of time — just head to the Hotel Desk in the International Arrivals Hall (after customs, next to Starbucks) at least 30 minutes before it starts.

The scheduled tours run everyday from 8:30am to 11:00am, from 9:00am to 3:00pm, from 9:00am to 6:00pm, from 12:00pm to 6:00pm and from 4:00pm to 9:00pm, so check to see which time works best for you.

A typical Istanbul city tour includes at least the following stops and activities, although these may vary depending on the day and length of the tour you choose:

  • Departure from Istanbul Atatürk Airport
  • Blue Mosque
  • Hippodrome: German Fountain
  • Serpentine Column
  • Obelisk of Theodosius
  • Topkapi Palace
  • Return to Istanbul Atatürk Airport

Additional stops for the longer tours include a trip to the Grand Covered Bazaar, Eyup Sultan Mosque & Square, the Byzantine City Walls, Dolmabahçe Palace, the Basilica Cistern, Galata Tower and the Hagia Sophia, among other popular attractions.

It's exciting to note that the entire tour, whichever you choose, is completely free and covers all entrance fees and meals. The food consists of Ottoman cuisine — note that lunch menus offer a vegetarian option, however no other dietary or religious food options are available.

I recently went on this tour , even though it was just a few days following the failed military coup , and had a wonderful time — stay tuned for a full review of the tour, coming soon to TPG.

Doha International Airport (DOH) in Qatar

Those flying on Qatar Airways with a long layover in Doha can participate in a nearly three-hour free city tour that takes you to the Museum of Islamic Art, Katara Cultural Village, the Pearl-Qatar, and the Souq Waqif. You'll have an English-speaking tour guide and receive a free bottle of water. To reserve your spot, visit the Doha City Tour desk on arrival — it's located at the beginning of Concourse B between the Mont Blanc and WH Smith shops.

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in Taiwan

Two free, half-day city tours are available for transit passengers (a morning tour and an afternoon tour) and those with a 7–24 hour layover in Taiwan before their next connecting flight are eligible — note that travelers from the US, Canada and UK are all allowed visa-exempt entry for the free tour, but it's a good idea to double-check the visa requirements before you go, especially if you're not from one of these countries.

Registration is available upon arrival in the Tourist Service Centers, which are located in the arrivals lobbies of T1 and T2. Each tour only has space for 18 passengers, so head straight there to ensure you'll get a spot. There won't be room on the bus for any baggage, so you'll have to store yours in the baggage center for a small fee before boarding the bus.

The morning tour departs T2 at 8:00am (T1 at 8:15am), returns by 1:00pm and takes you to the Shou Xin Fang Creativity Wagashi and Cultural Center and the Zushi Temple. The afternoon tour departs T2 at 1:30pm (T1 at 1:45pm), returns by 6:30pm and includes a visit to the National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and the Lungshan Temple of Manka (pictured above). Note that each passenger can only take one of the tours, so choose wisely.

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN)

If you've got some time to kill at SIN, check out one of two free Singapore city tours: The Heritage Tour , which includes visits to Chinatown and Little India, if your layover is at least 5.5-hour long, or the City Sights Tour , which takes you to the Singapore Flyer and the Marina Bay Financial Center, if your layover is more than six hours long. The best part: to take advantage of the free tour, you can be flying on any airline.

Drop your baggage off at the storage kiosk before the tour and register at the Free Singapore Tour booths located in the transit areas of Terminals 2 and 3 before you clear customs. If you land in Terminal 1, stay in the transit area and head to Terminal 2 for tour registration.
