Though it can be difficult to find the right place, the online resources we discuss in this article can help you rent an apartment that meets all your needs.

However, just because this site is often the best place to start doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll find your dream apartment there right away. Instead, you may want to explore your options on several of the best travel nurse housing sites.

By comparing listings across multiple platforms, you’ll give yourself plenty of accommodation options to choose from. This way, you can find a place that mostly closely matches your desired location, budget, and amenities.

In order to determine the rankings for the best travel nurse housing sites, we took the time to explore listings on each website. This allowed us to get a feel for each one’s offerings, as well as features like search filtering capabilities.

We paid close attention to all of the following criteria:

1. Furnished Finder

We determined that Furnished Finder is the best website for travel nurse housing because it caters specifically to the needs of travel nurses. In fact, it not only caters to nurses, but other traveling professionals as well.

This means almost all of the rentals are furnished and include utilities in the listing price. Depending on your preferences, you can filter the listings by price, pets welcome, and various amenities.

You can even choose to filter the results by “room only”, which tends to be cheaper, or “entire place”, which gives you more space and privacy.

Overall, we found that the listing prices on this travel nurse housing site were some of the most affordable. Better yet, the pricing is transparent and easier to gauge because there’s no additional premium added on for furnished and short-term leases.

The biggest downside to Furnished Finder is that most of the properties we looked at didn’t have any reviews. So, be sure to do your due diligence and ensure listings are legit by touring the property or taking other safety measures.

Most importantly, do not send anyone money until you’ve confirmed the legitimacy of the listing.

AirBnB is probably the most popular platform for finding short-term rentals, making it a great travel nurse housing site. While this site doesn’t cater specifically to travel nurses, we have seen several properties marketing themselves as a great place for travel nurses to stay.

After all, nearly all rentals on AirBnB come furnished, and with utilities included in the listing price. You’ll always pay the price you see in the listing, with the only other additional cost being taxes.

It also has robust filtering tools. For example, you can choose to only see properties with specific amenities and under a certain budget. 

Additionally, you can filter the results by “room only”, “entire place to yourself”, or both. If you’re looking to save extra money, booking a room instead of an entire place is significantly cheaper. However, many people like the extra privacy of an entire place for the extra money.

Most listings on AirBnB also have lots of reviews, making it easy to gauge which properties are high-quality. The site even recently introduced a new filter called “Guest Favorites” which allows you to only view highly-rated rentals, usually those averaging above a 4.75 out of 5 star rating.

The biggest downside to this platform is that it’s becoming increasingly limited in certain cities. For example, New York effectively banned many AirBnB rentals after adopting Local Law 18 . However, despite the stricter laws, there are still a ton of rentals available on the platform.

Kopa is another great travel nurse housing site because it only lists short-term, month-by-month rentals. You can also filter the results by “Fully Furnished”, “Partially Furnished”, and “Unfurnished”.

It’s easy to find a rental that aligns with your assignment, as you can search availability within a specific date range.

Additionally, there are search filters for various types of amenities, accessibility requirements, and rules (like pet allowance). You can also choose to only see “Entire Place” listings or “Individual Room” listings.

This platform also gives you all the key information you need once you click on a listing. The first things you’ll see are:

• Rental Type (ie, entire space vs individual room)
• Furnished, Partially Furnished, or Unfurnished
• Which utilities are included
• Other costs like security deposits and cleaning fees

The main drawback to this site is that there aren’t quite as many affordable options as the ones ranking above it. However, It’s worth noting the pricing and availability could fluctuate depending on several factors, like your location and the time of year.

Overall, it’s definitely worth checking out, because it’s possible to find a really nice place for a good deal.

4. Apartments.com

Apartments.com is another good place to look when searching for housing for your next travel nursing assignment.

This site is useful because the listings often provide a comprehensive overview of the property. They detail all of the amenities, neighborhood information, and even various fees, like utilities and pet fees.

Additionally, many of the properties have at least a few reviews, which can help you avoid low-quality rentals.

To find listings suited to your preferences, you can filter the results by “short-term” lease “furnished available”. Then, you can set your maximum budget and desired number of bedrooms.

However, it’s worth noting that the listing prices on this travel nurse housing website often don’t accurately reflect the monthly cost of rent. This is because most properties charge a premium for short-term lease and furnished units.

Additionally, many of the leases don’t include utilities, which can add even more cost to your stay. While you can filter by “Utilities Included”, this often means only some of the utilities are included. 

You may also need to consider upfront costs like the security deposit and first and last month’s rent.

So, overall it can be a little more difficult to gauge the final cost of accommodation when using this website. While it’s worth checking out the available short-term stays on Apartments.com, this site is typically better for long-term rentals.

5. HomeStay

If you’re looking to stay with a host and live with a local, Homestay can make a great option for travel nurses. The site mostly lists individual rooms, not entire places, and this can often result in more affordable accommodation.

Another good thing about this site is that many of the listings have reviews. This makes it easier to gauge the legitimacy of the listing, and get a feel for travelers’ experiences with the host.

Also, there are various types of filtering criteria, like amenities, distance from city center, and even hobbies you may share with your host. You should also be sure to use the “Host Welcomes” filter, as different hosts place restrictions on who can stay. 

For example, if you hope to travel with your family, it’s key to filter by “Host Welcomes Families”. Likewise, if you’re a male, be sure to use the “Host Welcomes Males” filter, as some hosts aren’t comfortable hosting men.

Another important thing to note about HomeStay is that the number of listings can vary a lot based on location. For example, in Philadelphia, we didn’t find many affordable results. On the other hand, we found quite a few relatively inexpensive rooms available in New York City and Boston.

So, if you’re not concerned with having an entire place to yourself and you want to find a cheap rental in a city with high rent prices, this could be right for you.

6. Extended Stay America

Extended Stay America is a great site for travel nurses to find housing because it’s relatively affordable and consistent. This company offers nice hotel-style rooms, fit for stays anywhere from a few days to a few months.

You can rent a private studio apartment that includes a kitchen and utilities, as well as on-site laundry facilities and free wifi. If you have pets, they even offer pet-friendly accommodation.

The downside is that, while they do have a lot of locations, they may not always be in your desired location. For example, when we looked at available units in Philadelphia, all of the properties were located in the suburbs, with no options within the city itself.

One more thing to note is that Extended Stay America is considered a hotel, and they feature hotel-style rooms. While these rooms look pretty large, even featuring a queen bed (or two) and a kitchen, those looking for a different style may want to look elsewhere.

7. Hello Landing

Hello Landing has a network of 20,000 available apartments across over 375 cities. The rentals are all short-term, flexible leases, and tend to be more high-end.

Their platform also offers a “Standby” option, which allows you to live in any one of their available Standby rentals for a flat fee. The catch is if someone else decides to pay the non-Standby price to rent the apartment, you are given a minimum of three days to move into a different unit. 

You should also keep in mind that the Standby option does not include all the available listings. You need to create an account to view Standby rentals.

This option could work out for those who are traveling from city to city and want a consistent marketplace and consistent price point. However, given the busy schedules of travel nurses, the possibility of having to switch rentals on short notice may be difficult.

If you’re not a Standby member, the prices of rentals on Hello Landing were some of the most expensive we saw, with few inexpensive options. Additionally, some of the listings had additional fees for utilities.

However, if you have a high budget and want to live in really nice accommodation, this could be a good choice.

8. Craigslist

Craigslist can also be a great place to find travel nurse housing rentals. While the “apts/housing” section usually features more traditional, long-term property listings, the “sublets/temporary” section often has listings for short-term rentals.

Additionally, you can filter the available properties by price, as well as “furnished”. However, you’ll need to check each individual listing to determine if the length of the lease matches your needs.

This can be one of the most affordable travel nurse housing sites, because property owners are often trying to find a tenant quickly. This way, they’re not wasting money on a place they don’t live in anymore.

The biggest downside to Craigslist sublets and temporary rentals is that you’re often working renting from individuals instead of established property management businesses. 

Additionally, since anyone can place an ad on the site, you should be especially cautious and ensure the listing is legitimate. If possible, try to tour the place before you commit, and don’t send money to anyone until you feel it’s safe to do so.

9. VRBO/Homeaway

VRBO , which also acquired Homeaway, is a rental marketplace geared more towards vacation rentals. This means a lot of listings on this site tend to be a little fancier, and they all come furnished.

You can filter by particular amenities as well as maximum price, and you can view the cost as a nightly or total price. So, if you plan on staying for a few months, you may need to break out your calculator to determine the monthly rent.

A lot of Homeaway and VRBO travel nurse housing listings also have reviews, which can help you decide if the rental is right for you.

The main drawback to VRBO is that the listings tend to be pretty expensive. However, if you’re looking for a more luxury stay, you may be able to find a good rental on this travel nurse housing site.

10. HotPads

Overall, HotPads is very similar to Apartments.com when it comes to travel nurse housing. The biggest difference is that Apartments.com has better filtering features, like filtering by short-term leases.

To see if short-term leases are available on HotPads, you’ll need to check the individual listings. You should keep in mind that your rent may be higher than the listing prices, because many properties charge a premium for short-term leases and furnished units.

One good reason to search for rentals on this platform is their commute calculator tool. This can help you determine how long it will take to get to your travel nursing job from each rental.

Overall, HotPads can be a good place to find short-term rentals and easily find a location with a short commute. However, checking each individual listing to see if they offer short-term leases could be time-consuming.

Like Hotpads, Zillow is better for finding long-term leases, but there are still travel nursing housing options on this site. However, you won’t be able to filter by “short-term lease” or furnished units.

With Zillow, the only way to filter out unfurnished and longer-term leases is to use their keyword search tool. Unfortunately, this often loads results that don’t actually come furnished and don’t last less than a year.

However, if you take the time to look at the listings, you may be able to find a short-term, furnished rental. Just be wary of the fact that short-term, furnished properties typically charge a premium on top of the listing price.

Overall, since the Zillow platform is used by people to both rent and purchase property, it lacks some of the features that are crucial for travel nurse renters.

12. Facebook Housing Groups

One more option to find a travel nurse is to join groups on Facebook . For example, a quick search for “travel nurse housing” on Facebook brought up several groups boasting over 100,000 members with over 10 new posts a day.

For instance, some popular housing groups dedicated specifically to travel nurse accommodation include:

• Travel Nurse Housing – Furnished Finder (group is moderated by Furnished Finder but acts independently from the site and app)
• Travel Nurse Housing – The Gypsy Nurse
• Travel Nursing: Places/Rooms For Rent

You might also consider searching for more general housing groups in your desired location. For example, if you want to work in Chicago, search for “Chicago housing”.

While this strategy can be hit or miss, you can find really good deals listed in these groups. 

However, even though most groups are moderated, you should be wary of spam and scams. Moderators may not be able to weed out all the illegitimate listings, so do your due diligence before committing or sending the landlord a deposit.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for cheaper housing or simply want to live around others, you can also usually filter by “Room Only”. Sites like HomeStay specifically cater to those who want to live with a host. 

Meanwhile, other sites, like Hello Landing, only offer private accommodation.

Additionally, different travel nurse housing sites feature different filters for amenities. Most sites provide filters for those looking for perks like a washer/dryer or an on-site gym, but some sites allow you to do more advanced filtering than others.

Additionally, you should consider whether the site you use offers accommodation in your selected location. For instance, Hello Landing’s Standby option is not available in New York and California. So, if you hope to complete assignments in these states, this won’t be a good option for you.

Overall, the popularity of each site can differ from location to location. So, we recommend you start exploring with travel nurse housing websites like Furnished Finder and AirBnB. 

If you don’t see many good listings, broaden your search to sites like Apartments.com and other sites on the list above.

The best time to book your travel nursing accommodation depends on a myriad of factors. While a report from NerdWallet suggested one month in advance is the best time to book on sites like AirBnB, the cost of rentals simply depends on supply and demand.

For example, if you’re looking to complete an assignment in a city during their high tourist season, you can expect to pay more for the rental. On the other hand, if you’re in a tourism-driven city during the off-season, you may be able to snatch up last-minute bookings at a discount.

So, while there are situations where booking last minute may be advantageous in a buyer’s market, sometimes it’s more beneficial and safer to book in advance.

So, we recommend you book as early as you can. This will save you the stress of having to worry about accommodation in the lead-up to your assignment.

How Much Should You Spend On Housing As A Travel Nurse?

There are two popular methods for determining how much you should spend on housing as a travel nurse.

The first is to spend a maximum of 25% of your monthly income. This allows you to put the other 75% towards other living expenses, savings, and more.

For example, if you make $2,000 a week, or $8,000 a month, you can budget up to $2,000 towards monthly rent.

The second method of travel nurse rent budgeting is to multiply your weekly housing stipend by four to determine your monthly housing stipend. Whatever number you get is the maximum amount you should put towards rent.

Of course, these are both general guidelines. The amount you should spend on rent also depends on a number of other factors, like existing debt, long-term savings goals, and what kind of amenities you feel you need.

As a career travel nurse, I have gone through the process of searching for travel nurse housing many times — and have actually become quite good at it.

So why should you listen to me?

Not only do I have years of experience in this area, but I am also not receiving any money for my opinions. I am not getting paid or making affiliate earnings to say anything in this article, so you can rest assured that my opinions are my own and without any outside influence.

Where To Start

So after you land a job and have signed the contract, THEN you start looking for short-term housing.

Pro tip: Do not sign a lease for a place until after you have signed your new work contract. See my post on the Best Travel Nursing Tips for first-time travel nurses for more advice.

When beginning the search, I suggest starting with Furnished Finders to get a feel for the market and then branching out from there.

Furnished Finders has become the go-to website for travel nurse housing, but there are still many platforms out there to check out.

To streamline your hunt and cut through the clutter, I’ve curated a list of the Best 7 Travel Nurse Housing Sites that stand out for their reliability, range of options, and my personal experience.

Travel nurse housing sites are online platforms that are designed to help travel nurses find short-term furnished housing.

Some sites like Furnished Finder and Hello Landing are designed specifically for travel nurses, while others, such as AirBnB, are not.

Even if a site is not specifically for travel nurses, you can still use it as long as it provides short-term furnished housing options.

The main goal of a travel nurse housing site is to facilitate the connection between travel nurses and property owners.

Criteria for choosing the best travel nurse housing sites

Acknowledging critical factors such as proximity to healthcare facilities and overall safety, these housing sites for travel nurses prioritize ensuring that healthcare professionals have a comfortable and convenient base during their assignments.

The best travel nurse housing options are not just about providing a roof over your head; they are about creating a home-like atmosphere that supports both your professional responsibilities and personal well-being.

Moreover, these travel nurse housing sites go beyond just listing properties.

In general, most of these site’s listings prices are similar to one another.

The difference is that some may require the total cost of the entire stay to be paid upfront, while others require it monthly. 

When thinking about how much travel nurses pay for rent , keep in mind the amount of your weekly government tax-free stipend and what your weekly take-home paycheck is.

If you are more frugal, try to keep the rent to one week of stipend pay.

If you have more spending room, try to keep it close to what one week of total take-home pay is. 

Location options

Do you want to live 5 minutes from the hospital, or do you want to live closer to the city center and commute to work?

For each property that you are considering, calculate the commute times, including traffic, to and from work.

What amenities are important to you?

My must-haves are a washer and dryer, dishwasher, and if I’m in a city, assigned parking.

Think about your permanent home and what amenities that you would be miserable without and put those on your must-have list.

Reviews and ratings

Usually for products on Amazon and the like, I take customer reviews with a grain of salt.

But when it comes to housing, read those reviews carefully.

Was the tenant ripped off? Was the property falsely advertised? Was it way better than what they thought it would be?

Signing a lease on a property that is sight unseen can be nerve-wracking so gather all the information you can beforehand. 

Flexibility in lease terms

Most places don’t care if your contract gets canceled and you have to move out early — they will still make you pay through the date that was agreed to on the lease.

It is always worth asking if there is a penalty for an early move-out just in case something happens. 

The Best Travel Nurse Housing Sites

This list is not a ranking from best travel nurse housing sites to worst, and it is entirely based on my experiences and knowledge.

Take this list with a grain of salt and ALWAYS do your research on what is the best fit for you and your circumstances.

1: Furnished Finder

Furnished Finder is in the number one spot as it is literally made for travel nurses.

Other traveling professionals use this site as well, but it is clear with its hospital proximity locator on each listing who this site is geared towards.

Yes, Furnished Finder is legit , and I have used it many times throughout my travels.

I have also only had one issue which was more due to the shady property management company than anything.

Housing costs generally reflect prices in the desired location, and all of the amenities are clearly laid out.

Getting ahold of the owner or landlord can sometimes be difficult, but so far that is my only drawback. (See my post on Furnished Finder vs. Airbnb for more details).

The chicness and niceness of the property is totally dependent on the owner.

Also, to list a property, one must pay and register which weeds out the scammers for the most part.

2: Hello Landing  

Hello Landing is the way to go if efficiency is the name of your game.

If price isn’t a huge factor and you just want to find a place online, book it, and show up, then Hello Landing is for you.

These properties are usually furnished pretty minimally and very…almost sterile with not a lot of personality or charm.

There are also many different types of housing available, from modern apartments to cozy townhomes, especially if you are in a city.

I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that Hello Landing has branched out as far as its locations go — they now offer many suburban cities outside of major cities which is great.  

As far as price goes, they are on the higher side with studios going for $2,000-$2500 per month.

They also require full payment upfront.

But, they do offer a “ 7-day guarantee ” where if you aren’t happy with your place in the first 7 days, they help you find a new property or help you with a full or partial refund.

The site also boasts 24/7 support which is not widely heard of in this industry. 

3: Corporate Housing By Owner (CHBO)

Now, I very much love this housing website for travel nurses.

I have found that it is particularly good if you are looking for a property in states that are warmer than average — read, a lot of nice houses with pools.

The rent prices are also usually pretty reasonable, especially for what you’re getting. Keep in mind that you are competing with corporations and not just other travel nurses. 

This is another site where you pay the rent monthly instead of upfront, and the fees are minimal.

It also explicitly says if they take pets or not, which is very helpful.

The website is user-friendly and easy to navigate. The only downside is that there is not always a large selection of properties. 

While traditionally known for vacation stays, VRBO offers a variety of properties that cater well to the unique demands of travel nursing.

I have never stayed with VRBO but I know many people who have.

One of my biggest hangups is the price.

The listings have the price per night with the total below it. I recommend doing some quick math and dividing the total by the number of months you’re staying to see what it comes out to monthly.

It is also important to note that VRBO typically requires payment upfront for the total stay, which might be a consideration for those preferring more flexible payment terms.

Despite this, VRBO’s expansive selection, combined with the convenience of having a fully furnished space, makes it an attractive option for many travel nurses.

Airbnb is a common go-to for anyone who is looking for temporary housing. The brand is trusted and they are all over the globe.

The problem is their pricing.

If you want an entire home (not an apartment, or not with anyone above you) that is not a “tiny home”, or “casita”, or bigger than a studio, then be prepared to pay for it.

I will say that they recently adjusted their fees, and if you stay longer than 90 days then it is only about $200-$400. It used to be north of $1000 for the renter, so good on them.

But keep in mind that if you rent directly from the owner, without using a third party, then there are zero fees. (Read more on Airbnb’s fees here ).

I will also say that the properties on Airbnb can be super cute and aesthetically pleasing as they have tough competition, so that’s a plus.

Also, if you need to cancel your lease and you are within the first 30 days, you should be off the hook for the remainder of the lease without any penalties, which is something you will not see with a traditional lease. (See my post comparing Furnished Finder to Airbnb ).

6: Blue Ground

As far as the best travel nurse housing sites go, Blue Ground has some of the nicest properties.

The issue is if you can afford it. Of course, rent depends on which city you’re in, but they do tend to be higher than say Furnished Finder or CHBO .

Then there’s the extras.

Utilities per month range between $200-$300 per month, if you want a parking space, it’s around $100 per month, and if you have pets, then you’re looking at another $100-$200 per month.

This turns a $3000/month property into a $3500/month property. They also prefer for you to pay for the entire stay upfront. There is an option to pay in two installments, but that will cost you a 2-3% fee.

Now, I don’t mean to shit on Blue Ground.

I would love to stay with them.

Their properties are chic and modern, and have an elevated living feel.

I say this would be a great option if you had a roommate (second traveler or partner) to split the rent with, and you wanted to live a boujie life for 13 weeks.

7: Home Stay

Home Stay is definitely the most frugal option and is solely for renting out rooms.

For those who don’t mind living with strangers and other nomads and who like to get a feel for the culture and city.

I am not one of those people who rent out rooms, but it is a solid option for those who are.

The hosts of these properties range from young professionals looking for help with the rent to empty nesters who miss the company and sound of a full house.

A somewhat odd option is that some places offer breakfast, ranging from light to full, that can be included in the total rent or added on as an extra amenity.

If I were looking to rent a room, I would 100% choose this site over Craigslist.

As we all know, everyone and anyone can post on Craigslist.

With Home Stay, you must apply and be accepted to the website.

And remember, you aren’t the only one wanting to ensure safety, the host is also concerned with this factor so it appears to be generally safe.

To recap, if I needed to look for temporary furnished housing, I would check these seven best travel nurse housing sites first, and in order, starting with Furnished Finder .

The website that you decide to go with to find short-term housing depends on how much you’re willing to spend, the amenities that are your must-haves, proximity to the hospital, and how flexible you need the lease to be.

Also, always trust your gut.

There are some creepy, up to no good people out there and if you have a bad feeling about something, then I suggest you trust it and move on.

Have fun with this part of the travel nurse life.

Still, it is intended for traveling government housing, relocation housing, luxury housing, and corporate housing for traveling medical staff. The rental properties come fully furnished and often include all utilities in their fees.  

You can search through over 30,000 rental properties in over 6,000 cities nationwide. If you are traveling to a smaller city, you may have trouble finding a rental property using this service. You can, however, complete a search form including the address where you will be working, date of need, and budget and receive information on available local properties.  

The downside of using this service is that these properties are more pricey than other websites, and the rental price is not readily available during your search. Each listing provides photos and a description of the property and its amenities but not the monthly cost. This could significantly prolong your search on this site.  

Extended-Stay America

If you are looking for an extended-stay hotel to call your temporary home, check out Extended Stay America ! These extended-stay hotels offer cable, wifi, onsite laundry, daily breakfast, and fully equipped kitchens for no extra charge! They also have pet-friendly options if you have a furry friend to bring along.

Extended Stay America offers unique programs and discounts for stays longer than 60 days and has over 750 locations nationwide. They even have a rewards program that provides deals on car rentals, local retail, restaurants, theme parks, salons, and entertainment.

Each listing page will tell you the many hotels in that specific city or area and the local sites you should check out. You will also see what amenities are available at each location and your cost per night. You can search by city, length of stay, special rates, and the number of guests.  

Contrary to popular belief, Airbnb is more than just a vacation rental site, you can also book what they consider long-term stays. A long-term stay is considered anything over a month in a specific location. You will find over 1,000 rental options in the United States. Due to the cost of some of the Airbnb rentals, this may be a good option if you are traveling with others.

Suppose you are nervous about renting a stranger's property. In that case, you can rest assured that Airbnb completes background checks on hosts using OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) lists, local criminal records, and sex offender registries. Additionally, they verify hosts’ identities with government identifications to prevent fraud and money laundering.  

It is simple to search any city and location, and each listing provides photos of the rental, available amenities, space descriptions, reviews, host ratings, local sites, and any monthly stay discounts offered! There is no need to send emails to learn more. It is all right at your fingertips while you search for your new home away from home!

Similar to Airbnb, VRBO also offers long-term rental options across the country. Only some of their rental properties are available for long-term rentals, but they have thousands of options with monthly discount rates. Again, similar to Airbnb, this option may be better for groups of nurses traveling together due to the price.  

Each search is upfront and easy to navigate. You can access photos, amenities lists, availability calendars, reviews, and local maps. You will also have the option to contact the host directly and read through the policies and rules of each rental.

If renting a room in someone’s home or apartment interests you, Homestay is for you! Using this website gives you access to fully furnished rooms and gives you access to other areas of the home. When searching for a rental, you can search by meal options, host hobbies, amenities, pets, and price.

The results page offers little information, only showing weekly costs, ratings, and a single photo. You must click each listing or refine your search for more information. Each individual listing will show additional images, meal options, rules, and host reviews. This can make your search process a bit longer, but if you are set on renting a room in someone’s home, this is a great website.

The drawback of looking for fully furnished options through Homestay is that it is only available in some cities, so you will have fewer options than with other websites. Additionally, the process of checking and verifying hosts is unclear. Their website provides little information on how or if the hosts are background checked or if there are protections against scammers.  

Housestay lists single-family or multi-family apartments, condos, duplexes, and townhomes, so if you are still determining what type of space you are looking for, you have come to the right place! All listings on this site come fully furnished with utilities included! The rentals are not shared spaces, so you will only have a roommate if you choose. Additionally, each listing must complete a Housestay home inspection process before guests arrive.  

Unfortunately, Housestay rentals aren’t available in all cities but have hundreds of listings nationwide. Additionally, you must complete a background check before guest approval, so even if the rental is open, you may not get approved to rent the space. It also may take longer to search this site because your results page only shows size and cost, so if you are looking for specific amenities, you will have to click on each listing, but if you have the extra time to search this site, it will be worth it!

If living in an apartment or home owned by another person differs from what you are looking for, Landing is an excellent option. Landing partners with property developers, managers, and owners to provide a more streamlined rental process. Because the properties are partners with Landing, you can easily transfer between properties as needed. With properties in over 375 cities across the country, you shouldn’t have a problem finding your new home.

There are guest requirements when applying for a rental, most properties will check your credit score, and you will need proof of a specific income to be a guest at the property. Typically the requirement is your monthly income is 2.5 times the monthly rental price. If you book a stay longer than 90 nights, some rentals have special offers to save on housing costs.  

When searching properties, you can access floorplans, photos, and virtual tours to help you get a feel of your new home before booking the rental property. You will also get a breakdown of amenity and utility costs that you may have to pay on top of your monthly rental fees. They are upfront about your total cost, so you won’t bite off more than you can chew.

Travel Therapy Housing: How to Find Short-Term Housing

​​Congrats! You got a job as a traveling therapist ! Now, you need to find short-term housing for your travel therapy assignment. Finding housing can be one of the most challenging parts of travel therapy.

You have come to the right place! As a therapist who has taken travel assignments for over 10 years, I have lots of advice to share to help make finding housing easier for you. Let’s dive into tips to find short-term housing for your 13-week travel assignment.

How to Find Travel Therapy Housing

To start, we are going to discuss two different paths that you can take to find housing for your travel therapy assignment. You can have your agency provide housing, or you can book it yourself with a housing stipend. I’ll break down the differences between these two options next.

Have your company provide housing

Did you know that many staffing agencies will provide housing for you on your travel therapy contract?

Having your agency find housing often isn’t talked about or used because it can end up being quite costly to your overall pay package.  Learn more about pay packages here.

When your company sets up housing, they tend to place you in pricier hotels or corporate housing units. This means that you would receive less money weekly from your paycheck because some money would be allocated towards housing costs. 

However, the benefit to this is that you would have no upfront housing costs and would not have to sign a lease, submit to a credit check or find housing yourself.

Take a housing stipend and find housing yourself  

While this option is more work on your end, it offers greater flexibility to determine where you live. This is what the majority of travelers do to find housing.

It also gives you the option to spend more or less on housing than your company would. Whether you are minimalistic or a luxury seeker, these options allow for more flexibility to find what you want.

Where to find Temporary Housing for Travel Therapy Assignments

Here are some ways and websites to find short-term housing for your travel therapy assignment.  When using these methods, especially sites that don’t verify landlords, like Facebook and Craigslist, I highly recommend being very aware of scams and misrepresentations.

When searching for an apartment in a new place as a traveling therapist, consider booking yourself in a hotel for the first week of your contract. By staying in a hotel, you know that you can get to your contract and relax in a place to stay. Then, you can use the first week of your contract to scout out apartments while you are on location at your assignment. You can also ask co-workers if they know of any open units. 

Furnished Finder

Our first website, Furnished Finder is designed for traveling healthcare professionals to find housing on their assignments. 

Furnished Finder acts as both a search engine for travelers to use to find housing, and as a reverse search for landlords to find travelers. So, on Furnished Finder, not only can a traveler search for units but they can post a listing for themselves. This listing is sent out to all of the landlords in that specific location with their contract details. Landlords can then reach out and contact the traveler. 

I’ve used Furnished Finder a lot for travel therapy housing and am especially happy with the reverse search feature where landlords reach out to me. 

When you think of Airbnb you may think of vacation rentals. However, you can also book longer-term month-to-month rentals from them. Yes, on Airbnb you can search for 3-month periods and often find discounted pricing for longer stays. 

One of the positive things about Airbnb is that it has a great review system and you’ll find a lot of reviews on the units and hosts. These reviews are helpful to determine if a unit is where you want to stay or not. 

Similar to Airbnb is Vacation Rental by Owner www.vrbo.com and Home Away www.homeaway.com.

Landing is a subscription model that has a network of apartments in over 300 cities across the U.S. You can stay in these apartments with flexible, short-term leases. You can either set a move-in or move-out date for a set fee. There is also receive more flexible pricing options. They also have a 7-Day Guarantee that if you are not satisfied with your home after move-in, they can move you to a new Landing or provide a full refund.

They don’t have application fees or deposits and you can transfer to any unit in their network with a 2-week notice if you are a member ($199/year fee). This is great for the fast-paced life of changing contracts as a traveling therapist. 

Craigslist is the OG (original) housing website and one that I remember searching through for hours to find housing for many assignments. You can use Craigslist to find an apartment, sublet, or a shared place with roommates. Like Furnished Finder, you can search for units on Craigslist, or post an advertisement for yourself and have landlords reach out to you.

While Craigslist has a wealth of listings, because it is free to post there, it is full of scammers.

• https://www.zillow.com/

Contact local realtors/agents

In an era where the internet makes everything so accessible, it seems like every available unit should be listed online. However, that’s not the case. Not every landlord is going to list their place online. Some landlords prefer to list units with real estate agents or even post a “for rent” sign on a bulletin board.

You can search for “real estate agents + location you are working in” to find agents in your area that might be able to help you find a unit. Believe it or not, I have also found really amazing units by walking around apartment buildings and looking at their “for rent” signs on their building bulletin boards.

Extended Stay Hotels

Extended stay hotels offer the best of both worlds when it comes to the comfort of home and the amenities of a hotel. These hotels cater to long-term travelers and offer studios and even one-bedroom units with kitchenettes.  Extended Stay America , Homewood Suites, and several chains by Marriott all offer extended stay units.  

Extended Stay Hotels often come with weekly house cleaning, daily coffee and snacks, wifi and utilities included, and more! 

When booking an extended stay hotel, look for special pricing on longer stays. You can call the hotel manager directly to inquire about a long-term rate or use the promotions that I have here. For Extended Stay America, I am happy to offer promo codes that offer up to 40% off stays.

Other benefits of Extended Stay Hotels:

• Often they accept pets
• Weekly housekeeping services
• Complimentary coffee, snacks, and sometimes meals

Ask Your Co-Workers

The struggle is real to pay bills as a healthcare professional. 

As somebody who has taken a lot of travel therapy contracts and met a lot of therapists, I found many therapists and nurses rent rooms to travelers, especially in places that get a constant flow of temporary staff.  

While living with a co-worker may not be your ideal, it is worth looking into.  I have called managers, after accepting positions, to ask if anybody on staff rents to travelers. You can also rent a hotel room the first week of your contract and ask peers if any of them rent out rooms or know of anybody who does.

Facebook Marketplace and Groups

Last but not least: Facebook. Facebook has become the mecca of all things community buy and sell related. Love it or hate it, it is a place where you can list your unit for rent for free and this is enticing to a lot of landlords. 

There are many Facebook groups that are dedicated to connecting traveling healthcare professionals with landlords. If you search for “Travel nurse Housing” many groups will appear.

Here are a few:

The benefit of using a travel nurse group to find housing is that the landlords are (hopefully) familiar with traveling healthcare professionals and understand a bit about our industry. 

You can also change your Facebook Marketplace location to your assignment zip code and search for units off of Facebook Marketplace. Or, you can search for community groups that allow housing posts in your temp location and post/search there.

I can’t say this enough but BEWARE OF SCAMS ON FACEBOOK. Many of the sites I listed above in this article spend considerable amounts of time verifying who posts on their sites and ensuring that fake listings do not get posted. Facebook does not verify posts and is a hotbed for scammers to list fake units, or message you about a unit that they have when in reality they are scamming you. 

To Conclude:

Short-term housing can be a significant challenge for traveling therapists. 

If you select to take company-sponsored housing, you may make less money than if you find your own place.  However, finding your own place can be a difficult task. Searching through listings, avoiding scammers, and taking a chance on a unit can all be stressful parts of an already hard journey.

Take a deep breath and relax while you do the search and decide on options.

I am not sure what the benefit is really, as a host you pay them to list but you have to handle the contracts, agreements etc. I am a Super Host and would like to rent to Traveling Health Care, I think I will call the local hospital and see if they have a listing service. Otherwise, back to the Airbnb service which is good but I have had many a bad guest. With the current health crisis, I am sure the need has increased.
