Japanese Online Visa for Taiwanese Citizens

Japan has launched an electronic visa for foreigner visitors. Eligible nationalities can apply for the Japan eVisa , which is a completely online service .

The new visa policy makes entry into Japan easier for many travelers, including those from Taiwan.

The following page explains the visa requirements for Taiwanese travelers visiting Japan, including how to apply online for the digital visa.

Do Taiwanese Nationals Need an Online Visa to Enter Japan?

Yes, all overseas arrivals must have an approved visa to enter Japan. All visa exemptions have been suspended in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning a visa is mandatory for all nationalities.

Fortunately, Taiwanese citizens can apply for the Japan online visa , along with US and Canadian citizens. This digital system saves having to go in person to a government office, or requesting a visa on arrival.

Read on to understand the different types of visas available to Taiwanese passport holders planning a trip to Japan.

Japanese Tourist Visa Types for Taiwanese Citizens

The Japan eVisa is valid for a number of purposes. Visitors from Taiwan can use the travel permit to visit Japan for any of the following reasons:

• Tourism : international tourists must be traveling as part of an organized tour
• Business : visitors must have an inviting Japanese company
• Visiting relatives : travelers need an invitation letter and proof of kinship

Each Japan online visa is valid for a single-entry trip to Japan, with a maximum stay of 90 days .

Japan eVisa Requirements for Taiwanese Passport Holders

Taiwanese nationals must meet the Japan eVisa requirements before starting the application process. All travelers must have the following documents:

• Taiwanese passport : valid for at least 6 months
• Photo of applicant : passport-sized and taken recently
• Debit or credit card : valid for online payment
• Email address : active and checked regularly

Applicants must also provide additional documents . The requirements for these depend on the reason for travel.

Tourism and business required documents

Visitors from Taiwan who plan to enter Japan for tourism or business purposes must have a certificate of registration to the ERFS (Entrants, Returnees Follow-up System).

This document is obtained by the traveler’s receiving organization, which will be either a tour company or a business .

Necessary documents for visiting family

Taiwanese citizens who wish to visit family in Japan must have a letter of invitation from a relative , and proof of kinship . Proof can be in the form of an official document, such as a birth or marriage certificate.

Online Application for the Japanese eVisa from Taiwan

Applicants from Taiwan can request a Japan eVisa is 3 simple steps :

• Complete the online form and upload supporting documents
• Pay the eVisa processing fee
• Receive the approved visa by email

The whole process is online . All that’s needed is an electronic device, such as a tablet or smartphone, with a stable internet connection.

The Japan eVisa application form is quick and easy to complete . Only basic information is required, relating to the passenger and their travel plans.

Travel to Japan from Taiwan with an eVisa

The Japan electronic visa makes entry into Japan more convenient for Taiwanese travelers. All visitors need to do is present their passport and a copy of their visa at immigration, and the border officer will confirm they have permission to enter.

Most visitors from Taiwan choose to travel to Japan by plane. There are direct flights to Tokyo and Osaka from the following Taiwanese airports:

Whether you prefer hiking mountains, exploring temples or soaking in hot springs, Taiwan is an island of endless temptations.

Asia’s most vibrant democracy is also relatively relaxed when it comes to immigration rules, in contrast to the more onerous visa policies of China across the strait. Generally speaking, the visa requirements for entering Taiwan will depend on your nationality.

Here’s our guide to Taiwan’s entry requirements, with all the information you need on visa types and procedures.

Visa-free entry to Taiwan

Tourists from most European countries, Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, South Korea and Japan (along with a scattering of other nations) can enjoy visa-free entry to Taiwan for stays of up to 90 days. Tourists from a number of other nations including Singapore and Malaysia are permitted 30 days of visa-free travel.

Tourists from most other countries will need to apply for a Visitor Visa . Citizens of mainland China are required to apply for a special type of travel permit.

All visa-exempt travelers need a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry and two blank pages for the entry and exit stamps. Upon arrival, you will also need to show a confirmed travel ticket with your itinerary for departing Taiwan before the end of your visa-free travel period. 

Can you extend a visa-free stay?

In short, no, unless you are from Canada or the UK; citizens from these countries can extend their stays up to 180 days. Visa holders approved for at least a 60-day stay can extend their trip, however. Applications to extend visas can be made in Taiwan at the nearest National Immigration Agency Office . It's worth noting that a visa-free stay can't be converted into a visa stay once the trip is underway.

Study, work and visitor visas for Taiwan

If you plan to go to Taiwan to work, study or visit relatives for an extended period of time, you can apply at an overseas mission of the ROC (Republic of China, Taiwan’s official name) in your home country for either a Visitor Visa (for a single entry, and for periods of less than six months) or a Resident Visa for longer stays. Note that there is no dedicated student visa category in Taiwan. 

Visitor Visas cost approximately US$50 (this varies from country to country), while Resident Visas cost approximately US$100.

Opportunities also exist for citizens of many of the same countries covered by visa-free travel to apply for a visa under Taiwan’s Working Holidays Scheme , targeted at those between the ages of 18 and 30. For stints of up to 12 months, the scheme permits the holder to work during their stay – subject to a few restrictions, such as not remaining with a single employer for more than 3 months.

Who’s the Taiwan Travel Authorization for?

Citizens of Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam can apply online for a no-fee Travel Authorization Certificate for multiple 14-day visits to Taiwan within its 90-day validity, provided they have not been employed as guest workers in the country and have one of the following documents:

A valid resident or permanent resident card or a valid entry visa (it may be an electronic visa) issued by Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, any of the Schengen countries, the United Kingdom, or the United States.

A Taiwanese resident card, entry visa, or alien resident certificate issued that has expired less than 10 years before the date of arrival in Taiwan is also acceptable.

Make sure to stay updated on routine vaccines

Ensure routine vaccines, such as influenza, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), varicella, and polio, are up to date.

Vaccinations for hepatitis A and typhoid are also recommended due to food and water risks.

Keep updated with Taiwan's COVID-19 requirements, such as quarantine, testing, or vaccine certificates, through your airline or the Taiwanese government website.

Things to be aware of when visiting Taiwan

Keep an extra eye on the following to keep healthy and safe during your trip to Taiwan:

1. Air quality: Urban areas may have poor air quality, so those with respiratory issues should take necessary precautions.

2. Mosquito-borne illnesses: Be cautious of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever, especially in urban and residential areas. Use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved clothing.

3. Natural disasters: Taiwan is located in a seismically active zone, so earthquakes are a common occurrence. Taiwan also experiences typhoons, especially between July and October. Familiarize yourself with safety procedures in case of a natural disaster.

Medication for personal use

Follow these tips to bring into Taiwan some over-the-counter medicines:

Declare all medications: Report all medication for personal use to customs authorities.

Original packaging: Always keep medicines in their original containers and in transparent bags in your hand luggage.

Prescription or doctor's letter: Present the medical prescription issued by your doctor or other competent authority, in English.

Check for restrictions: Call Taiwan's embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.

Online Application for R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior.

Citizens of Cambodia ,  India , Indonesia , Laos ,  Myanmar , and  Vietnam  can apply online for an R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior ( https://niaspeedy.immigration.gov.tw/nia_southeast/ ).

Nationals of aforementioned countries intending to submit an online application for such a certificate should carefully read the following.

Basic requirements To be eligible for an R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior, the following three basic requirements must be met:

• The applicant's passport must have remaining validity of at least six months starting from the date of arrival in Taiwan.
• The applicant must possess an onward/return air or ferry ticket.
• The applicant has never been employed as a blue-collar worker in Taiwan.

Additional requirements In addition to the aforementioned basic requirements, one of the following requirements must also be met:

• Valid resident or permanent resident card
• Valid entry visa (may be electronic visa)
• Resident card or visa that has expired less than 10 years prior to the date of arrival in Taiwan
• Applicants who use an electronic visa issued by Australia or New Zealand as the required document must present the valid Australia or New Zealand electronic visa as entering Taiwan.
• Applicants who use a visa issued by Japan as the required document must present the proof record of entering Japan or a confirmed onward ticket to Japan when entering Taiwan.
• The applicant possesses an entry visa or resident card issued by the ROC at any point in the past 10 years and has no record of immigration irregularities or law violations in Taiwan. However, holders of ROC entry visas bearing the remark FL (migrant worker), X (others), or P with “Special permission from MOFA” (visa and eVisa for “Project for Simplifying Visa Regulations for High-end Group Tourists from Southeast Asian Countries (Project Kuan-Hong)” ever issued), as well as holders of ROC resident cards with stated purpose of residence being foreign laborer (移工), are not eligible for an R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior.
• An approved R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior is valid for 90 days. Multiple entries within these 90 days are allowed. The holder of an R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior may stay in Taiwan for 14 days, starting from the day after arrival. If the holder wishes to apply for another R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior, he or she must do so seven days prior to the expiry of the current certificate.
•  If any mistake is made during the online application process, the applicant may submit a new application.
• Online applications can only be made by persons holding valid regular passports. Persons holding temporary, emergency, or informal passports, or travel documents other than a passport, cannot submit online applications.
•  The visas in the aforementioned list of required documents do not include work permits.
• Holders of aforementioned visas bearing such stamps as VOID, CANCELLED, or CANCELLED WITHOUT PREJUDICE are not eligible for an R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior.
• With regard to resident cards or visas that have expired less than 10 years ago, this means that the time between the expiry date of the resident card or visa and the date of arrival in Taiwan may not be longer than 10 years. If no expiry date or validity period is given on the resident card or visa, the 10-year period refers to the time between the resident card or visa’s issuing date and the date of arrival in Taiwan.
• Applicants who hold permanent resident cards with no expiry date may enter 9999 for year, 12 for month and 31 for day in the Date field.
• Once the application has been approved, the applicant should print out the R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior. The applicant must present the certificate and the required documents for inspection when entering Taiwan. Entry will be denied if the required documents are not produced.
• Nationals of Indonesia who possess a valid Japan Visa Waiver Registration are eligible for an R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior.
• Please fill in an (online) Arrival Card for immigration inspection each time before reentry within the validity of this certificate. https://acard.immigration.gov.tw/nia_acard

The JAPAN eVISA system (electronic visa)

Foreign nationals/people who wish to travel to Japan for tourism for a short-term period can apply for a visa online and receive an electronic visa (eVISA) through the JAPAN eVISA system. As of August 1, 2024, the JAPAN eVISA system is available for nationals/people residing in the following countries/regions.

Eligibility

• Consulates-General of Japan in Seattle, Denver, Houston, and Consular Offices of Japan in Anchorage and Portland (starting from July 23, 2024 at 16:00 JST (0:00 PDT))
• Consulate-General of Japan in San Francisco (starting from August 29, 2024 at 16:00 JST (0:00 PDT))
• (1) China Nationals of China, who reside in China
• (2) Viet Nam Nationals of Viet Nam, who reside in Viet Nam and participate in a packaged tour organized by designated travel agencies
• (3) Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Macau, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea and United Arab Emirates All foreign nationals/people residing in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Macau, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea (except jurisdiction over the Consulate General of Japan in Jeju) and United Arab Emirates, except those who are exempt from short-term visa
• (1) JAPAN eVISA is available only to those who travel to Japan by plane.
• (2) During the application process, the applicant may be requested to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over the place of the applicant’s residence for an interview.
• (3) Only ordinary passport holder is eligible to apply through JAPAN eVISA website.

Types of visa

Single-entry short-term stay visa for the purpose of Tourism (for a period of up to 90 days) (Note). Electronic visas will be issued to those who applied through JAPAN eVISA website.

(Note: For nationals of China residing in China, electronic visas with a period of stay "15 days" or "30 days" will be issued. For nationals of Viet Nam residing in Viet Nam, the period of stay of electronic visas will be "15 days".) (Travelers with eVISA are required to display “Visa issuance notice” at the airport in the internet environment. PDF data, screenshot and printed copy will not be accepted.) If you wish to visit Japan for other purposes or for a long-term stay, please submit your application to the Japanese Embassy, Consulate General or Consular office with jurisdiction over your place of residence. (In some countries, applications must be made through travel agencies accredited by Japanese overseas establishment.) (For Taiwan, Taipei / Kaohsiung offices of Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association) In this case, you will have a visa sticker on your passport.

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Taiwan’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Taiwan set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Taipei Representative Office in London or the Taipei Representative Office in Edinburgh . Entry procedures are being regularly reviewed, so may change at short notice.

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Taiwan.

Epidemic prevention period

When you arrive in Taiwan, the authorities advise that you observe a 7-day self-initiated epidemic prevention period, but you no longer need a negative test result before going out. The authorities are no longer providing free rapid test kits on arrival. You can use your booked accommodation and you can move freely during the 7 days.

This self-health management scheme is provided as guidance by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), and members of the public are free to decide whether to follow it. Please consult the Centres for Disease Control website for the latest guidance.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Taiwan, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the day you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You can spend up to 90 days in Taiwan without a visa. You can extend this by a further 90 days once you have arrived in Taiwan. You can get more information on entering Taiwan without a visa (‘visa-exempt entry’) from the Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs. This applies if you travel:

• as a tourist
• to visit family or friends
• to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events

If you plan to stay in Taiwan for longer than 180 days, you must have a visa before you arrive. If you stay beyond the time given on your visa, you will get a fine and risk being deported from Taiwan.

There are specific rules for naturalised British citizens born in the People’s Republic of China and holders of British National (Overseas) passports wishing to enter under the visa waiver scheme.

You should contact the Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs or Taiwan National Immigration Agency for further information.

Applying for a visa

If you are in the UK and need a visa, apply at your nearest Taipei Representative Office . If you are in Taiwan, apply through the Taiwan National Immigration Agency .

Alien Resident Certificate and Alien Permanent Resident Certificate holders

If you already hold a resident certificate, you do not need a visa to enter Taiwan.

If you hold a Youth Mobility Scheme visa for Taiwan , you can apply to switch to a working visa or a visa to study a degree course at undergraduate level or higher.

Submit your application to the  Bureau of Consular Affairs  for consideration. You can then apply for an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) at your local  National Immigration Agency (NIA) Service Center  once your application has been approved. Contact the  Bureau of Consular Affairs  or  National Immigration Agency  for further information.

Vaccine requirements

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Taiwan . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. Contact the Customs Administration for further information.

Animal products

Do not bring animal products into Taiwan without authorisation. If you are caught with any animal products, you may face a heavy fine. Customs officials have increased inspections due to concerns about African Swine Fever Virus in pork products, particularly from the People’s Republic of China.

Bringing money into Taiwan

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is higher than 100,000 New Taiwan Dollar (NTD) or 10,000 US dollars. You will get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you. If you do not, your money could be seized when you leave. Contact the Customs Administration for further information.

International bank transfers can be slow. Most of the ATMs in 7-11 stores accept international cards. Other ATMs may accept them, but not all do.

American Express, Citibank and Thomas Cook branches accept their own-brand travellers cheques. You may need your receipt as well as your passport when you cash them.

The Visa Waiver Program  (VWP) enables most citizens or nationals of participating countries *  to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. Travelers must have a valid  Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)  approval prior to travel and meet all requirements explained below. If you prefer to have a visa in your passport, you may still apply for a visitor (B) visa.

Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015

Under the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015, travelers in the following categories must obtain a visa prior to traveling to the United States as they are no longer eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):

• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Cuba on or after January 12, 2021 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Cuba, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.

Requirements for Using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

You must meet  all  the following requirements to travel to the United States on the VWP:

Travel Purpose Must be Permitted on a Visitor (B) Visa

The following are examples of activities permitted while in the United States on the VWP. In addition, transiting through the United States to other countries is generally permitted for VWP travelers.

• consult with business associates
• attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
• attend short-term training (you may not be paid by any source in the United States with the exception of expenses incidental to your stay)
• negotiate a contract

• vacation (holiday)
• visit with friends or relatives
• medical treatment
• participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
• participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
• enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Travel Purposes Not Permitted on Visa Waiver Program – Examples:

• study, for credit
• work as foreign press, radio, film, journalists, or other information media
• permanent residence in the United States

Must Be a Citizen or National of a VWP Designated Country *

You must be a citizen or national of the following countries *  to be eligible to travel to the United States under the VWP.

• Czech Republic
• Liechtenstein
• Netherlands
• New Zealand
• South Korea
• Switzerland
• United Kingdom**

**To be eligible to travel under the VWP, British citizens must have the unrestricted right of permanent abode in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.

Each Traveler Must Have a Valid ESTA

In order to travel without a visa on the VWP, you must have valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval prior to boarding a U.S. bound air or sea carrier. ESTA is a web-based system operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to determine eligibility to travel to the United States for tourism or business under the VWP. Visit the  ESTA webpage  on the CBP website for more information.

Updating Your ESTA

In most cases, your ESTA will be valid for two years.  You also must obtain a new ESTA if you: (1) receive a new passport, including an emergency or temporary passport; (2) change your name; (3) change your gender; (4) change your country of citizenship; or (5) need to change your responses to any of the “yes” or “no” questions on the ESTA application.

These individuals can apply for visas using regular appointment processes at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. If an individual who is exempt from the Act because of his or her diplomatic or military presence in one of the seven countries is denied ESTA, he or she may go to the  CBP website , or contact the  CBP information Center . The traveler may also apply for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection strongly recommends that any traveler to the United States check his or her  ESTA status  prior to making any travel reservations or travelling to the United States. More information is available on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website . 

Have the Correct Type of Passport

You must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure from the United States (unless exempted by  country-specific agreements ). For families, each member of your family, including infants and children, must have a passport. 

In addition, you must have an e-passport to use the VWP. An e-passport is an enhanced secure passport with an embedded electronic chip. The chip can be scanned to match the identity of the traveler to the passport. E-Passports must be in compliance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). You can readily identify an e-passport, by a symbol on the cover. See the example below. More information about e-passports is available on the DHS website .

Emergency and Temporary Passports

If you use an   emergency or temporary passport to enter the United States on the VWP, the passport must be an e-passport. This includes VWP travelers who are transiting the United States.

May I apply for a visa instead of using the VWP?

Yes, you may apply for a visitor (B) visa if you prefer to do so or if you are not eligible for VWP travel. Additionally, you need to apply for a visa if you will be traveling on a private aircraft or other non-VWP approved air or sea carrier. Review the  approved carriers list . Also, if you intend to stay longer than 90 days, then you need to apply for a visa. 

I was denied a visa under section 214(b). May I use the VWP?

A recent visa refusal for any reason could result in denial of ESTA authorization, additional review at the port of entry, or denial of admission to the United States. If you are uncertain if you qualify for VWP travel, you may apply for a visa.

Trips to Canada, Mexico, or nearby islands

If you are admitted to the United States under the VWP, you may take a short trip to Canada, Mexico, or a nearby island and generally be readmitted to the United States under the VWP for the remainder of the original 90 days granted upon your initial arrival in the United States. Therefore, the length of time of your total stay, including the short trip, must be 90 days or less. See the  CBP website . Citizens of VWP countries *  who reside in Mexico, Canada, or a nearby island are generally exempted from the requirement to show onward travel to another country *  when entering the United States. How can a country* join the VWP?

A country *  must meet various requirements to be considered for designation in the Visa Waiver Program. Requirements include, but are not limited to:

• enhanced law enforcement and security-related data sharing with the United States;
• issuing e-passports;
• having a visitor (B) visa refusal rate of less than three percent (for initial designation);
• timely reporting of both blank and issued lost and stolen passports; and
• maintenance of high counterterrorism, law enforcement, border control, and document security standards.

Designation as a VWP country *  is at the discretion of the U.S. government. Meeting the objective requirements of the VWP does not guarantee a country *  will receive VWP designation.

Entering the United States

An approved ESTA allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States, but an approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. Learn more on the  CBP website .

Extending your stay

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to extend your stay in the United States beyond the initial admission period. You must depart the United States on or before the date on your admission stamp when you entered the United States. Change of status

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to change status in the United States. See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

What if I am traveling to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands?

Citizens of Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Kingdom do not need a visa or ESTA to visit both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands because of the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program, though they must complete Form I-736 prior to travel.  People's Republic of China Passport holders also do not need a visa if they complete Form I-736 for temporary admission into the Northern Mariana Islands. For more information on the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program,  click here

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]henever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b)(1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.
