  • A Quick Look at Our Favorites in 2024
  • The 10 Best Dog Travel Bags
  • 1. PetAmi Dog Travel Bag – Best Overall

PetAmi Dog Travel Bag

While backpacks offer more comfort and convenience, they don’t provide as much space, compartmentalization, or stability as tote organizers like the PetAmi Dog Travel Bag . The PetAmi comes in a good range of colors and designs and has two main compartments within the bag. One holds the two food containers included with your purchase, and the other similarly sized compartment can hold blankets, coats, and other larger items.

Multiple pockets also provide space for leashes, toys, and more. In addition to the food containers, the bag includes two collapsible bowls. The bag has a capacity of 22 liters (6 gallons), which should include enough room to hold food for a few days, but you may need something larger if you’re going away for a week or more.

The reasonable cost, decent size, and convenient and intelligent compartmental design make this the best overall dog travel bag, but the cloth food containers are a challenge to clean, and the mesh pockets tend to leak their contents when you open the top.

  • Compartmental design keeps everything in place
  • Includes two food storage containers and two bowls
  • Plenty of pockets and compartments
  • Food containers are tricky to clean
  • Top pockets don’t have zippers
  • 2. Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag – Best Value

Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag Accessories Supplies Organizer

The Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag has a very similar design to that of the PetAmi above, but it does have a smaller capacity of approximately 16 liters (4 gallons), compared to the 22 of the PetAmi. However, it is very competitively priced, being one of the cheapest options on this list, and it has some good features.

The main section of the bag holds the included food storage containers and can be used for coats or blankets and leashes. There are also multiple pockets and the top pocket of the Bundaloo is zippered so everything stays in place. This bag also includes two collapsible containers.

It is small and is best suited to small breed dogs for day trips or, at a stretch, a weekend away. If you’re traveling any longer than this, you will need to take additional food in separate containers or use Ziplock bags. However, the low cost and the well-laid-out design make the Bundaloo the best dog travel bag for the money.

  • Very competitively priced
  • Plenty of pockets, including a zippered pocket at the top
  • Includes two storage containers and two collapsible bowls
  • 3. Mobile Dog Gear Dog Travel Bag Deluxe – Premium Choice

Mobile Dog Gear, Dog Travel Bag

Backpacks are more convenient for carrying, which makes them ideal for hiking or camping trips, and also if you have a number of bags to carry. The load is spread across the bag, and your hands are free to carry other bags or hold your dog’s leash. Although they tend to be smaller than handbags, this isn’t true of the Mobile Dog Gear Dog Travel Bag Deluxe . Its 24-liter capacity means it can carry more than the PetAmi and the Bundaloo above. It includes two food carriers and two collapsible bowls, and it also includes a placemat and is made from heavy-duty polyester to prevent damage and prolong its life.

It has one large pocket, but if you want something with compartments, this deluxe bag may not be the best choice. The design won’t be to everybody’s taste, either, plus the Mobile Dog Gear Dog Travel Bag Deluxe is expensive.

  • The backpack is easy to carry
  • Includes two food containers and two collapsible bowls
  • Hardwearing design
  • Only one pocket
  • 4. ARCA PET Travel Bag

Travel Bag for Dog Backpack

If you’re traveling with a puppy, you don’t necessarily need as much storage space as you do for an adult dog, but you do still need plenty of space for food and bowls while also having your hands free to be able to walk or, more likely, carry the puppy.

As such, a backpack design is your best option, and this ARCA PET travel bag , with 18 liters of carrying capacity, has enough room for puppy provisions while also being easy and comfortable to carry around. As well as the main compartment, it has pockets on either side, a double pocket on the back, and a pocket and poop bag or wipe dispenser on the front. It also includes one food storage container and two collapsible bowls.

The pockets are convenient, but because there are so many, they do reduce the amount of space in the main compartment of the bag and because you end up packing the main bag itself, there can be a problem with the stitching of the seams bursting. For a small dog or puppy with limited carrying requirements, though, it is a good quality bag for convenient carrying.

  • Plenty of pockets for organization
  • Includes a poop bag dispenser pocket
  • Lightweight and easy to carry
  • Main compartment feels small
  • Seam stitching can burst if the bag is overfilled
  • 5. Higher Level Airline Approved Dog Travel Bag

Higher Level Airline Approved Dog Travel Bag

Taking your dog on a plane means you will need provisions for the journey, and ideally, these need to be on hand so that you can give your dog food and water when required. An airline travel bag needs to be big enough that it can hold everything you need but not so large or awkwardly shaped that it won’t be allowed on as hand luggage.

The Higher Level Airline Approved Dog Travel Bag measures 16 x 14 inches so it will fit under airline seats and should be accepted by all airlines. It includes two waterproof food containers and two collapsible food bowls. It has a large pocket on the front, pockets on either side, and a poop bag dispenser, which can be very convenient when you take your dog for a toilet break outside the airport.

The bag can also sit conveniently over extended baggage handles so it can be stacked on the trolley or while walking. It is a little more expensive than some of the alternatives, and although it can be worn as a backpack it isn’t comfortable to do so, but it is a well-sized bag that is very well suited for taking on airplanes.

  • Airline-approved bag fits under plane seats
  • Include two food containers and two collapsible bowls
  • Can be stacked and carried with other luggage
  • Not comfortable as a backpack
  • 6. Lekesky Dog Travel Bag

Lekesky Dog Travel Bag Airline Approved

The 25-liter (6-gallon) Lekesky Dog Travel Bag is also airline-compliant, fits under airline seats, and can be hooked around luggage handles. It has multiple pockets and side pockets, a poop bag dispenser, and includes two food containers and two collapsible bowls. It can be worn as a backpack and its dimensions mean that it is comfortable to do so. This one also comes with a placemat which can be rolled or folded and stored inside the bag when not in use.

If you opt for the gray design, it costs less than the purple bag, too. It is a sturdy bag, rather than one with collapsible sides, and because it retains its shape it is convenient for storing and moving, but something softer might prove more comfortable on the back.

  • Airline compatible
  • Decent price for the gray backpack
  • Includes food storage containers and collapsible bowls
  • Sturdy design not the most comfortable for carrying on the back
  • 7. Tidify Dog Travel Bag

Dog Travel Bag Airline Approved Travel Set

Dog travel bags must be portable so they are easy to carry while offering enough room to carry whatever you need. The size of the bag you need will ultimately be determined by how many accessories and items your dog takes away, but also by the amount it eats and the length of time you’re going away.

The Tidify Dog Travel Bag is large, with a 33-liter (8.5-gallon) capacity, and it offers plenty of pockets so that you can organize the items you take, but it is quite cumbersome. It comes with two food containers and two collapsible bowls, and a large front pocket that opens out to provide a feeding mat. It is also reasonably priced, considering what it includes and the size.

The bag includes a first-aid pouch, but this doesn’t include any first-aid items. It is really just a pouch with first-aid written on it and a checklist of items to include.

  • Large capacity
  • Good price for the size
  • First-aid pouch doesn’t include any first-aid items
  • May be too large for some
  • 8. Unique Dog Travel Bag

Travel Bag - Dog Traveling Luggage Set

The Unique Dog Travel Bag is something of a luxury travel bag and does cost a little more than most of the alternatives. However, rather than the silicone folding bowls, it has two stainless steel bowls. It also has an elevated dog bowl stand located in the front pocket, and it comes with a first-aid pouch and two food storage containers.

Although stainless steel bowls are better quality than silicone folding bowls, they are very small, and your dog will likely need multiple bowls. Because they are made of metal and don’t fold, they also take up more room than collapsible bowls. The elevated feeder is a unique touch, but it won’t be suitable for aggressive eaters who will easily topple the bowl and cause a mess.

The product is a good idea and has some good features, but it may be more convenient to replace the metal bowls with collapsible ones and ensure that the bag is full when using the elevated feeder.

  • Stainless steel bowls are sturdier than collapsible silicone ones
  • Elevated feeder is good for some dogs
  • Bowls take up more room
  • Bag can fall over when your dog is eating from the elevated bowls
  • 9. Modoker Dog Travel Bag

Modoker Dog Travel Bag

The Modoker Dog Travel Bag has nearly 30 liters (8 gallons) of capacity and multiple pockets, including one bag dispenser. It also has an internal Velcro divider and includes two food storage containers and two collapsible bowls. The travel bag is a little expensive for its size, although you do get all the accessories you need.

Although the bag is sturdy and seems well built, the Velcro divider is prone to moving around and the magnetic pocket sealer also tends to pop open, especially if the bag is full.

  • Includes food containers and collapsible bowls
  • Magnetic pocket catches are prone to popping open
  • Velcro divider is prone to coming loose
  • 10. The Original Doggy Bag Backpack By Rubyloo

The Original Doggy Bag™ Backpack by Rubyloo

If you enjoy taking your dog on day trips or out hiking with you, you will want a backpack that is lightweight and easy to carry. It doesn’t necessarily need the huge capacity that some of the travel bags offer but you can still benefit from the portability of the bag and the convenience of being able to carry food, treats, and other items.

The Original Doggy Bag Backpack by Rubyroo is a backpack with just 18 liters (4.5 gallons) of capacity so it won’t be suitable for weekends away, even, but the single food bag can be used to carry enough for one or two meals, and the two collapsible bowls can be used for water and food. There’s also a treat bag and the backpack has a poop bag dispenser at the bottom, making it easy to grab and go.

The backpack is comfortable and handy for days out, but it is a little expensive for its size and you will want something larger for anything longer than a day out.

  • Easily accessible poop bag dispenser
  • Includes a treat bag
  • Small capacity only suitable for a day out
  • Expensive for its size
  • Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Dog Travel Bags

A dog travel bag is really just a tote bag or a backpack , but it typically includes multiple pockets and maybe an internal wall or compartment that can be used to enhance organization. In most cases, dog travel bags also include collapsible bowls and dog food storage containers, and you can find some that have features like poop bag dispensers or even an elevated feeding platform. Although many of the bags look similar, there are some important features to consider to ensure that you get a bag that is best suited to your requirements and those of your dog.

There are many types of dog travel bags and general bags available, but the two most common and beneficial are the tote organizer and the backpack. These offer decent storage while still being easy to transport.

  • Tote Organizer: The tote organizer tends to be square or rectangular and has a large internal compartment that stores most provisions and items. The bag’s design means that it is typically carried in the hand using two handles, although some do include a shoulder strap and may also have backpack-type straps. These usually offer the most carrying capacity and are especially convenient for putting the trunk or sliding under the seat of a plane.
  • Backpack: Backpacks are convenient because they can be slung over one shoulder or strapped over both shoulders, spreading the weight and making them easier to carry. However, what they offer in convenience and comfort, they tend to lose in capacity and organization. Best suited to day trips and if you need to keep your hands free, for example, to carry a puppy or to hold a dog leash, these are portable and convenient.
  • Dimensions & Capacity

Whatever style of bag, you will need to consider the dimensions and capacity of the bag to ensure that it will carry everything you need. At the very least, a dog travel bag will usually be used to carry food, leashes, and a toy or two. It may also carry a dog coat, blanket, water bottle, and food bowls, depending on your activities and how long you are packing for. Up to 30 liters (8 gallons) can be considered a good size for a weekend or perhaps a few days for a smaller dog breed, and if you need more space than this, you might need to consider alternative arrangements or having an additional storage bag for extra food and supplies.

The vast majority of dog travel bags include collapsible bowls. These are silicone, and they concertina down to a frisbee shape. They take up very little room in the bag, but they can be small, and they won’t last forever. If you do find a bag that includes stainless steel bowls , these bowls are stronger, but they don’t fold down, so they take up a lot more room in the bag. They also have to be quite small to fit in the bag so they won’t hold too much food.

  • Food Storage Containers

As well as food bowls, many of the bags include food storage containers . These enable you to store dry food, are usually waterproof, and negate the need to use plastic bags and other storage methods. Many of the bags on our list above include two containers, which means that you can fill one for a short trip and use the rest of the space for additional storage or fill both if you are away for a few days.

  • Poop Bag Dispenser

While food bowls and containers are quite commonplace, one feature that is less prevalent is a poop bag dispenser. These take the place of a small pocket. You can put a roll of poop bags inside and then pull a single bag from the dispenser, as needed, so you don’t have to open the bag and search for the roll every time.

woman holding a used dog poop bag

While most of the bags have large central bags that can be used to hold a selection of items, you will usually find at least one external pocket as well. External pockets are handy for keeping items that you need quick access to, like a leash or treats. And, you can even put your car keys in one of the pockets, as long as it has a zipper or other secure fastening.

  • Do You Need a Dog Travel Bag?

A dog travel bag is really just a standard bag with compartments and other storage solutions, as well as the usual inclusion of travel bowls . If you have a decent backpack or another bag that offers enough room, you don’t really need to buy a separate, dedicated dog travel bag. However, in the same way that a lot of new parents have dedicated changing bags, having a go bag for your dog so that it is ready to travel or head out with you whenever you want is a good idea.

PK paw divider

There are a surprising number of dog travel bags available, including both tote and backpack designs, and with a wide variety of dimensions and volumes. There are those with travel bowls and even one or two with permanent stainless-steel bowls.

Above, we have included reviews of 10 of the best dog travel bowls and found the Petami Dog Travel Bag to offer the best compromise of capacity and portability at a reasonable price. For value hunters, though, it is the Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag that appeals, although it is quite a small bag and may only be suitable for dogs with small appetites.

The Best Dog Travel Bag: 21 Bags to Keep Your Dog Organized

Whether you prefer catching flights or chasing the open road , choosing the best dog travel bag for your adventure is an easy way to elevate your trip.

Bringing along the wrong bag can quickly turn your trip into a flop. Nobody wants to find themselves scrambling up rocks with a tote bag slipping off of their shoulder. Or, even worse, chasing their dog into the ocean with a bag that’s not waterproof.

To get the holiday vibes rolling, we’ve gathered the 21 best dog travel bags to keep your dog organized.

The Benefits of Overnight Bags for Dogs

Before I started bringing along a designated bag for each of my dogs, our adventures were chaotic. There was an unorganized mess of bowls, toys, and treats shoved into every nook and cranny of my own luggage.

A little research showed that I wasn’t the only one with this problem. Other dogsplorers had found a solution much more quickly than I did: a doggy bag for travel.

best dog travel bag inside a car

Packing a separate bag for your dog is a fantastic way to keep everything tidy and together. You can safely store items like medications, leashes, and comfort toys without worrying about them being misplaced.

If you’re super organized, you might even want to keep the bag constantly packed and ready. This makes for an easier getaway and means spontaneous trips are that much more achievable. Just grab and go!

Choosing the Best Dog Travel Bag for Your Pooch

1. style of bag.

A dog travel backpack is best suited for explorers who like to get off the beaten track while on vacation with their dog. I would strongly recommend a backpack if you need to rely on your center of gravity a lot: think hiking, climbing, or running.

Backpacks make for great carry-on luggage, too. Even larger backpacks can usually be compressed and easily stored in the overhead compartment.

Shoulder Bags

best dog travel bag, shoulder bag

These bags are definitely the best bags for all-around traveling. You won’t have any trouble storing them while flying or when squeezing them into your car for a road trip.

The only downside? Shoulder bags can feel a little bit awkward. I find that wearing them crossbody can alleviate this a bit, but they still aren’t as good as a backpack when hiking.

Investing in a dog suitcase is a brilliant idea for frequent flyers or long-haul travelers. If you need more than just a carry-on, you really can’t go wrong with a suitcase! They’re more durable (so more likely to survive the cargo hold) and far easier to maneuver long distances thanks to their wheels.

I would especially recommend a hard-top suitcase if you need to transport sensitive items such as papers or medications, for added peace of mind.

If you’re traveling by car, however, you may want to give a suitcase a miss. They are definitely one of the bulkier dog travel bags on the market. You also shouldn’t underestimate just how difficult it can be to wheel a suitcase while also handling a dog on a leash. No matter what you do, tangles will happen!

best dog travel bag

When deciding which size dog travel bag to purchase, consider the following:

  • The breed of your dog. Bigger dogs will need bigger bowls, which equals needing more space.
  • How many dogs do you have? Do you want to store everything in one shared bag, or are you packing a separate overnight bag for each dog?
  • Space and/or baggage allowance. If you fly frequently, are you prepared to upgrade your baggage allowance every time to allow for a bigger bag? If you’re a road-tripper, how much spare space do you usually have? Be realistic.

3. Storage and Weight Capacity

The storage capacity of your travel bag is one of the most important factors to consider when making your purchase.

There are so many designs on the market and it can be difficult to know which to choose. Some bags are incredibly minimal, single-pocket backpacks. Others are doggie duffle bags with designated pockets for any imaginable item.

Only you know which bag you will get the most use out of. Do you prefer an organized packing method, or will you end up just throwing everything in loose anyway?

Remember too that multiple dogs or bigger dogs will require…well, bigger stuff! Investing in a bag with a higher weight capacity will mean greater peace of mind for you. You won’t need to be checking for stretching or worn-down straps anywhere near as often.

There are so many products for dogs: collars, kibble, harnesses, treats, balls, toys, blankets, the list goes on and on. When you travel with your dog whether it’s just a day trip or a week long holiday you need to bring along your pet gear and finding the right bag to keep all of your dog stuff together can be quite the challenge. It’s a great idea for all dog owners to get a dog specific travel bag to organise all of your dog products and have them ready to go for any trip.

I have looked at and reviewed lots of dog gear travel bags and after some evaluation have narrowed it down to the best ones according to best quality product, best value and best design. I have also sorted it out into three categories: backpack, suitcase and shoulder bag designs.

Note: These bags are not dog carrier bags. Dogs do not get inside these bags and get carried around like a crate. They are for carrying dog supplies and gear.

Why Buy A Dog Gear Travel Bag?

If you are always travelling with your dog whether that is by plane or a road trip, investing in a good quality dog gear organiser bag is a must. It can make the travelling process so much easier for you and your dog rather than lugging around an old unorganised bag.

A pet bag can organise all of your dog’s important supplies including food, treats and toys as well as important dog paperwork including vaccination and medical resources.

It can also make a great gift for a dog owner friend who often travels with their dog. They probably haven’t thought of investing in one of these bags. It would make a really unique present.

Features To Consider In A Dog Travel Gear Bag

  • Stored size. When you’re not travelling you need to store your dog travel bag in your house and not everyone has an abundance of space. Definitely consider the size specifications of your bag before you buy it and make sure you have a good spot to store it.
  • Machine washable. Anything around dogs will get dirty and this of course applies for dog gear travel bags. Look for machine washable bags so you can easily keep your bag clean.
  • Compartments. Look for bags with multiple compartments so you can organise your dog products into their own sections. I would suggest one with at least 3 sections so you can organise your gear into food, toys and walking gear (collars, harnesses and leashes) sections.
  • Closings. Different bags have different closings, some don’t close at all. Look for bags that do close, especially ones that use zippers or velcro.
  • Waterproof/water resistant. Some bags are waterproof or water resistant. This is good if you are travelling for a holiday where you are mainly outdoors taking part in activities such as swimming, camping or hiking.
  • Food carrier bags. This is the feature that makes a dog gear bag different from any normal bag. They usually come with little bags specifically for carrying your dog’s food.
  • Included products. Most of these dog gear bags come with included products such as dog bowls, toys, blankets and first aid kits. Look for bags that have products that you don’t already own.

Dog Gear Packing List

  • Car safety restraints e.g. dog seat belt
  • Dog Food. This seems so obvious but so many people forget to pack dog food because they are so used to the routine of going to the kitchen or cupboard where you store the kibble and dishing it out there and then.
  • First aid kit
  • Information Folder with dog’s vaccinations, medical records and emergency contact numbers
  • Travel water bottle

Dog is waiting for the owner on the railway platform

Packing smarter can make all the difference when loading up an overflowing trunk or trying to avoid a checked bag at the airport. But while you worry about making all your stuff more manageable, don’t forget that there’s likely a better solution for your canine traveling companion, too. If you’re still relying on a spare backpack or, worse yet, a plastic bag to carry your dog’s gear, you’re ready for the convenience of a dog travel bag.

With a bag designed for your pet, no space goes to waste. You’ll find dozens of clever designs to carry around your dog’s accessories, with many including on-the-go travel bowls to keep your pup content at each stop. You have numerous excellent options to consider and to help you cut straight to the most worthwhile products, follow our reviews of the ten best travel bags for dogs.

A Quick Comparison of Our Favorites in 2024

The 10 best travel bags for dogs, 1. mobile dog gear week away tote pet travel bag – best overall.

Mobile Dog Gear’s Week Away Tote is the ultimate travel bag, adding more unique features than the average carrier while using almost the same amount of space. With the larger option having two food bags capable of carrying up to 30 cups of kibble, it can handle everything from a weekend trip to the lake to a week-long out-of-town vacation.

Jet setters enjoy comprehensive features to facilitate travel with their pets. Like many dog travel bags, it meets most airline carry-on measurements, and the collapsible bowls and placemats fold up into the bag, storing efficiently to make feeding your dog quick and pain-free at every stop.

While the bag generally has a quality build, the only issue many consumers had involved the zippers easily breaking. Otherwise, the design is practical and effective. Several mesh pouches around the outside provide easy access and organization for frequently needed items. The Mobile Dog Gear bag makes the journey with your dog effortless and worry-free, earning our pick for the best overall travel bag for dogs.

  • Large food bag capacity
  • Several mesh storage pockets
  • Includes ID tag
  • Zippers break easily
  • Not water-resistant

2. PetAmi Dog & Cat Travel Bag – Best Value

The PetAmi Dog & Cat Travel Bag is the best travel bag for dogs for the money; it’s a low-priced, high-quality, and fully functional tote for all of your dog’s belongings. The storage pockets aren’t as numerous as those on some alternative bags, and it doesn’t have the plastic mat for the collapsible bowls, but there’s little you’ll miss out on otherwise with this airline-friendly carrier.

Rather than mesh pockets, the PetAmi bag’s exterior storage compartments use the same water-resistant Oxford covering, keeping all your accessories safe when caught in the rain. The only slight knock against the pockets involves the interior mesh pocket, which lacks a zipper and lets loose items fall out when opening the case.

  • Water-resistant outer cover
  • Leak-proof lining
  • Several color options
  • No mat for bowls
  • Inner mesh pocket doesn’t zip

3. Mobile Dog Gear Weekender Backpack – Premium Choice

The stylish and multi-functional Mobile Dog Gear Weekender Backpack keeps all your puppy’s materials easily accessible. Collapsible food bowls accompany a fold-down non-slip feeding mat and two food bags with space for up to five cups each.

With the undersized capacity, this bag is primarily for smaller dogs. But if you have a weekend getaway or camping trip planned, it could be the perfect solution for any pet. Small touches, like the quilted outer cover, dog bone ID tag, and built-in waste bag dispenser pocket at the front of the pack, elevate the design and enhance the comfort.

  • Waste bag dispensing pocket
  • Fashionable quilted cover
  • Small food bag capacity
  • Limited color options

4. Rubyloo Dog Travel Bag – Best for Puppies

Rubyloo’s The Original Doggy Bag™ promises to make travel more fun with its patented design and 100% lifetime warranty backing the well-built traveler. The water-resistant cover comes in five colors (including a cool camo print), has two collapsible bowls, and includes two food carriers that hold eight cups each.

The Rubyloo dog travel bag is comfortable to carry and supplies some of the best storage features to keep your items handy and secure. Alongside the removable primary compartment divider, you get a front pouch with a zippered pocket, a bottle storage side pocket, a mesh rear pocket to hold a couple of frisbees, and a side pocket with a waste bag dispenser.

  • Ample storage compartments
  • Waste bag dispenser
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Only one available size
  • Not ideal for larger dogs

5. Modoker Dog Travel Bag

The Modoker Dog Travel Bag leaves nothing out, ensuring you have the organization, flexibility, and dependable design you need to travel with confidence. Two closable front pockets join a mesh pocket covering the luggage sleeve, an elastic travel bottle side pocket, and a dual-zippered side pocket, letting you quickly retrieve tissues or dog waste bags.

While the water-resistant pack has plenty of features, a few minor issues prevent it from being the perfect travel bag for dogs. The small containers only fit a total of about 10 cups of food. It’s only ideal for short outings and weekend trips unless you have a small dog. The magnetic buttons on the front pocket also have more potential to come undone, so you must be careful about how you pack.

  • Versatile storage compartments
  • Zippered tissue/bag compartment
  • Small food containers
  • Magnetic clasps are less secure
  • Food bowl colors are random

6. Top Dog Pet Gear Dog Travel Bag

Top Dog Pet Gear’s Dog Travel Bag covers all the essentials at an excellent price point. Two food pouches carry 6.5 cups of food a piece, which is a relatively small amount compared to some other listed items. But if you have a small–medium dog, it could suit you perfectly for an entire week.

Everything is here except the bag dispenser and placemat for the bowls. A spacious magnetic front pocket accompanies a mesh back pocket, an elastic banded water bottle side pouch, and a zippered side pocket on the exterior. Inside the bag, the Velcro divider compartment divider and zippered mesh pocket efficiently store toys, grooming accessories, food, and more.

  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Ideal size for small–medium dogs
  • No placemat for bowls

7. Teamoy Dog Travel Bag

The Teamoy Dog Travel Bag sets itself apart by adding an extra storage section for dog owners who aren’t enjoying enough organization from the traditional travel bag design. Sitting above the primary storage area is a compartment containing a large, zippered mesh pocket under the lid and three additional mesh pockets, giving you four more places to organize your dog’s leashes, toys, grooming tools, and other small items.

The substantial storage space should make you feel confident bringing dogs of any size on a multi-day excursion. And with the larger bag having containers capable of holding close to 30 cups of food, it provides plenty of room for your dog’s kibble and treats.

  • Extra storage compartment
  • Large food containers
  • Zippers prone to breakage

8. BAGLHER Dog Travel Bag

Quality combines with a hint of fashion in the BAGLHER Dog Travel Bag , featuring a durable, water-resistant Oxford outer cover in 12 unique color and print options. Available in two sizes, it has an ample food storage system for several days of adventures and an efficient arrangement that keeps it from feeling bulky.

While the overall construction quality is stout, the BAGLHER loses a few points for its small bowls, which are unlikely to suit a large dog, and the missing exterior rear pocket. Although it has a luggage sleeve, the bag lacks the wide pocket many packs feature, taking away substantial storage opportunities.

  • Durable build
  • Several unique colors and designs
  • Good food storage capacity
  • Small bowls
  • No rear pocket

9. ARCA PET Travel Backpack

The ARCA PET Travel Backpack is comfortable and classy, a compact, lightweight, and easy-to-carry pack that conveniently organizes your dog’s necessities. A single waterproof container efficiently stores up to 15 cups of food, and 11 unique pockets across the interior and exterior offer separate storage for all kinds of equipment. Although it isn’t as spacious as some other packs, it’s one of the easiest to haul around for a day or two.

  • Several storage compartments
  • Comfortable to carry
  • Relatively small capacity

10. beka. Dog Travel Bag

You won’t have to worry about forgetting a thing with the beka. Dog Travel Bag . Two large food storage containers can hold several days’ worth of food for even the heaviest dogs, and the added compartment up top gives you the extra pockets you need to keep all your pet’s items organized. Although the bowls may be too small for a large dog, the overall construction quality and thoughtful features make this one of the best values of any dog travel bag.

  • Only one size available

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Travel Bags for Dogs

Dog travel bags generally follow similar formulas to the point that you can expect certain features from nearly any product. Totes have food containers, collapsible bowls, and luggage sleeves, while almost every primary compartment uses a Velcro divider. In many areas, manufacturers try not to tinker with what already works. Still, there are a few ways you can distinguish travel bags and make the best choice for your dog and traveling style.

Keeping all your dog’s toys stored comfortably in your bag is a top goal for any owner. Checking the bag’s dimensions and capacity will ensure you can pack everything you need for a multi-day outing.

Some bags offer their internal storage capacity in liters for you to compare. But you can also glean a certain amount by comparing the bag’s exterior dimensions. Sizing is critical for planning your traveling as well. Although most bags are airline-friendly, the slight variations in sizing could be the difference in whether you can add that extra towel or hair brush.

Food Storage Containers

Food storage containers are water-resistant, lined pouches that typically come with travel bags for dogs. They have handles and wipe down easily with a damp cloth. Although the design doesn’t change much, the capacity will, with some capable of holding enough food for over a week and others only handling less than a weekend’s worth.

The number of cups of food that will fit in each container can vary slightly depending on the kibble size. If you can’t find the capacity for the food bags, you can compare their dimensions to get a rough idea of how much they’ll hold.

Two bowls typically come with the pack, with some including a folding placemat. The collapsible bowls usually consist of BPA-free silicone, compressing in for easy storage in the bag, though you can find some bags with bulkier, non-collapsible bowls made of lightweight stainless steel. Plastic bowls should also have a hook hole for a carabiner. Regardless of whether the pack includes the small carabiners, the hanging loop allows you to store your food bowls on the bag strap hook to free up space inside.

If you have a larger dog, prioritize travel bags with wider bowl sizes. Too many consumers buy a pack without considering their 100-pound dog’s needs in this department and end up with an enormous challenge getting them to eat out of undersized bowls. While small dogs can eat out of almost anything comfortably, a 5-inch-wide dog dish won’t be feasible for a dog with a large snout. The bowl size is one reason Mobile Dog Gear’s bag shines: it has 7-inch-wide square bowls.

Special Features

Dog travel bags can sometimes seem like the same product with different labels. The best travel bags for dogs subscribe to similar tried-and-true versatile features, but with a closer look, you can find notable differences beyond the bag’s size.

  • First aid kit (these usually do not contain the first aid materials)
  • Poop bag/wipe dispenser
  • Feeding placemat
  • Treat pouch

Don’t discount the importance of the color, either. Fitting alongside the rest of your luggage, dog travel bags should ideally be an aesthetic match. If the detailed specs aren’t overly critical to your decision, explore the surprising array of bag colors, patterns, and prints to personalize the look and create your style.

Types of Packs

You have two essential styles of dog travel bags available : a tote or a backpack. Totes generally offer the most capacity, exterior storage pockets, and convenient access to anything you need due to their squat and wide shapes. You will usually have three transporting options: a carrying handle, removable shoulder straps, and a sleeve to fix the bag around the pull-up handle on your rolling luggage. A tote is ideal for multi-day trips and the most convenient for storing in a car’s trunk or on an airplane as a carry-on or personal item.

Backpacks are generally taller than they are wide, meaning you may have to go digging if you leave a toy at the bottom of the bag. Exterior storage pockets are often more limited in size and amount. Still, you’ll get many of the same essential features that totes have, such as the collapsible food bowls.

While totes are superior to backpacks for functional storage, backpacks are the most comfortable and convenient. If you plan to go on hikes or short weekend getaways and want to keep your gear on hand without it being cumbersome, a backpack is the way to go.

With a well-rounded set of features, including ample storage capacity, large bowls, and a sturdy build, the Mobile Dog Gear Week Away travel bag will reliably suit dogs of any size and offer the ultimate travel experience. For those looking for great deals, PetAmi and Top Dog deliver affordable, high-quality designs, while Modoker and BAGLHER supply a slew of colorful packs to help you stay fashionable. While traveling with your dog can be a ton of fun, it can also be a bit overwhelming — especially if you’re trying to stay organized.

But one tried-and-true trick while traveling with dogs is to give your dog his very own travel bag.

Dog travel bags keep your dog’s stuff all in one place and are usually designed to carry things like food, bowls, toys and anything else your pup might need. That way, you know exactly where everything is when you’re on the go.

But there are a ton of dog travel bag options available online, so how can you find the best one?

The Dodo reached out to Irith Bloom, a certified professional dog trainer and owner of The Sophisticated Dog in Los Angeles, who said the best dog travel bags are ergonomic, lightweight and sturdy — and shared some tips for how to find the best one.

  • Best dog travel backpack overall: PetAmi Dog Travel Bag Backpack
  • Best all-black dog travel bag: Vumdua Dog Travel Bag
  • Best dog travel bag with food storage: Ruff Dog Travel Bag for Supplies
  • Best statement dog travel bag: POPPYPETS Dog Travel Bag
  • Best dog travel bag for safety: Dog Travel Bag Week Away/Overnight Accessories Organizer
  • Best dog travel bag for flying: Top Dog Travel Bag

Dog travel bag benefits

Travel bags for dogs are designed to hold your pup’s supplies, which makes carrying around items like dog bowls and food a lot easier.

And since dog supplies can get heavy, dog travel bags are usually designed to be super easy to carry.

“They are also usually lightweight and have convenient handles,” Bloom told The Dodo. “This makes them easier to use.”

And some dog travel bags are even airline approved, so you can take them as a carry-on while flying.

“Travel bags may even be specially made to fit under an airplane seat more easily,” Bloom said.

How to find the best dog travel bag

When looking to purchase a dog travel bag, look for one that’s lightweight yet sturdy, has comfortable handles and fits airline carry-on requirements (if you plan to use it for flying). And of course, pick one that you like the look of, which will definitely encourage you to use the bag more frequently.

“Look for features that will work well for you — everything from a color you like to a strap or handle that fits your hand well,” Bloom said. “Finally, consider the weight of the bag and its sturdiness … [these] can be conflicting features, but both are important. You want the bag to be as light as possible so it's easy to carry but also sturdy enough to make it through multiple journeys.”

To find a dog travel bag that’s high quality, pay attention to the details. “Check the hardware — especially the zippers — and examine the fabric and seams. If it looks like the bag would fall apart easily, it’s not a good choice,” Bloom said.

If you know you’ll need to feed your dog on the go — like if you’re camping or on a road trip — look for dog travel bags that come with insulated food storage, dog bowls and a water bottle holder. Some travel bags even come with a built-in mat to catch any spills.

Buying Guide: Dog Travel Bag

Choosing a dog bag that perfectly matches your travel needs and doesn’t break the bank is a must. It’s important to keep in mind how you and your pup plan to use the bag and any special requirements your pup might need. Plus, the dog travel bag should be versatile enough to be used in the dog park or at the beach. If you’re unsure of which travel bag to purchase, we’ve put together this handy buying guide to help you make an informed decision.

Why Should You Buy a Dog Travel Bag?

Every dog parent knows how much fun it is to travel with their favorite pooch. But if your dog becomes agitated due to the absence of their favorite toy, the enjoyment can quickly turn sour. The most convenient way to keep your pet’s supplies organized and separate from your own luggage is to use a specialized pet travel bag. A dog accessory bag might appear like a diaper bag at first glance, but it’s far from it. While the similarities are there, a dog travel bag is more about meeting your dog’s daily needs.

There is a wide range of alternatives available on the market, from high-end designer puppy bags to more basic dog accessory bags. You should choose one to keep your dog happy and to enjoy your trip to the fullest.

What Makes a Great Travel Bag for Dogs?

Sufficient space.

Tote bags for dogs are available in a variety of sizes. If you’re going on a week-long trip, you’ll need a bigger bag than if you’re just going out for a day with your dog.

The number of dogs you’re packing for, the size of your dog, and how long you’ll be away from home all play a role in determining the proper size. In general, you’ll need a first aid kit, waste bags, dog food, and treats while you’re on a road trip with your dog. It’s important that the bag has enough space to carry all of these essentials.

Adequate storage

There should be enough room in the dog travel bag for all of your pet’s needs to keep them safe and happy. When it comes to accessing an item on the go, the bag’s compartments or dividers come in handy. It is important to ensure that the compartments are protected with zippers, magnets, or Velcro so that your items stay in place while traveling.

User-friendly design

Pet owners have a wide range of travel preferences; the tote bag you select should complement your unique mode of travel. Most dog travel bags feature a carrying handle and some may be worn as crossbody bags, duffel bags, or backpacks.

If you have to hold the bag for an extended period of time, consider your comfort and convenience when making your choice. A bag with handles will suffice if you’ll simply be carrying the bag to and from the car. A backpack or crossbody tote bag, on the other hand, is a better option for those who plan to carry their bags for long periods of time.

How to Choose a Dog Travel Bag

Pockets, zippers, and compartments.

Having different compartments to store your dog’s belongings is a great way to keep everything in its place. If you use the bag frequently, finding exactly what you need will become second nature.

When storing items that are prone to spilling or falling out of a pocket – such as dog food and treats – look for a bag with zippers.

  • Easy to carry

No matter how you plan to travel, you’ll need to spend some time carrying your dog’s travel bag, as well as its contents, either on your shoulders or back or in your hands. Because of this, the bag should have an ergonomic, comfortable, and padded shoulder strap.

What’s more, the bag’s carrying strap should be adjustable as simple adjustments to handle lengths and shoulder straps can help alleviate back and neck pain.

Easy to maintain

Most pet parents carry a lot of things in their dog travel bags, including food, water, towels, toys, and more. Choosing a bag that’s easy to clean and maintain is essential as it’s likely that the liquids and food you pack will spill resulting in a huge mess. Depending on your pup, you might need to clean the bag after every trip. That’s why it’s important that the bag should be easy to wash, clean, and maintain for you and your dog’s hygiene.

There are different types of bags, including ones that are hand wash only and others that are machine-washable. Keep in mind that machine-washable bags will wear out quickly.

Synthetic fabrics are used in the majority of travel bags. Even though they appear to be comparable in quality, this is not the case at all.

When choosing your travel bag, consider the durability, scratch resistance, and water resistance of its material to ensure that the bag will serve its intended purpose. You shouldn’t compromise on the quality for the sake of cost as spending a few more bucks on a sturdier bag might save you money in the long run.

How Much Do Dog Travel Bags Cost?

Inexpensive.

If you’re looking for a pet-friendly bag for short trips, you can get an inexpensive travel bag for $10 to $25. These travel bags are usually made of plastic or lightweight fabric.

If you want to get the best value for your money, expect to spend $30 to $50. Bags in this range typically have medium width and several compartments to accommodate a large amount of gear.

Some dog travel bags may cost as much as $100. These bags are more likely to have wheels and different compartments with several pockets and dividers.

Tidify Travel Bag

top dog pet gear travel bag

Tidify travel bag is well-made, cleverly designed, and budget-friendly: everything you’d want from a dog travel bag. Its most defining feature is the fact it has plenty of storage space and evenly spaced out and divided compartments. The designers did a great job to utilize every single ounce of space for storage – everywhere you look there are pockets and flaps. They also added a unique feature of two quick-release clasps that allow you to strap in a placemat, a blanket, jacket, or anything of the sort.

Features to consider in dog travel bags

When you travel with your pet, there are a lot of things to consider (and often bring along). No matter how you transport and travel with your pet – whether in a travel crate , a carry bag, in a booster seat or on a leash – it is no secret that you won’t be able to efficiently carry all your pet’s accessories to boot. Food bowls, water bowls, blankets, swimming vests, jackets, or toys: the list can turn out to be quite long and troublesome to pack. A dog travel bag solves all these problems with its pet-oriented ingenious design that anticipates your packing needs and allows you to conveniently store all of your pet’s stuff. With dog travel bags, you’ll have all you need at the tips of your fingers. Whenever you need anything it will be right beside you, and no matter how full the bag is, it will be easier to carry. Travel bags are compact and lightweight and can be carried on any trip – whether by plane, bus, car, or train.

But before you make your purchase, there are some crucial aspects to consider, and all that depends on what you need and want. So here are some important features that you should consider when buying a dog travel bag.

Size is certainly the defining feature of dog travel bags. Depending on your needs, you really need to make a smart purchase and consider the overall size. Too large and you won’t really be able to carry it everywhere and easily, and too small and you won’t fit all the things you need. Careful consideration is needed for a perfect match: large bags are designed for long-distance traveling where you really need to carry all you might need from hygiene products to toys and spare leashes. The small ones are great for everyday use and just the basic necessities you might need on your daily short trips. Think in advance and make the purchase that best suits your needs.

Compartments

An abundance of compartments is one of the most important parts of a travel bag. Different designs will have different numbers of compartments, but one thing is certain – the more the better. You want to be able to store most of your dog-related accessories and to keep them separate and neatly organized at the same time. Dividers keep things easy to reach and return back to their place, minimizing the hassle and mess that comes with travel. While often designed with particular pet accessories in mind, compartments in dog travel bags are still versatile enough that you won’t be limited in your packing choices.

When you are transporting food and water bowls, dirty dog toys, or used blankets, you can’t avoid mucking up your travel bag. And this is all normal when it comes to any type of pet products, as our pooches are not the tidiest creatures on the planet. But that also means that you will have to find a travel bag that can be cleaned easily and often and be able to endure the wear and tear. Machine washable bags are the best solution here, and those materials that are sturdy and durable, and won’t get ruined after the first wash.

Features & perks

Almost all dog travel bags come with a variety of convenient features that vary from brand to brand. The different design solutions are meant to help make traveling with a dog a breeze, so take care to choose those that work the best for you. Some bags come with added food and water bowls that are compact and stored neatly. Others have attached dog toys, or food carriers that will keep your kibble and treats dry and fresh during travel. Many brands opted for adding fluffy blankets as well, both for comfort and emergencies. Either way, you have many options and you can adapt according to those items you lack or need the most.

As it is the case with everything, durability is the key with items such as these. Opting for cheap solutions will result in short term use before you need to get a replacement. And with important accessories such as this one, you really don’t want to risk it and ruin your trip because of luggage malfunction. Choose durable and high-quality items, and look for features that signal sturdiness, such as reinforced stitching or heavy-duty fabric choices. A good travel bag needs to be reinforced on crucial connections, to be adjustable and durable, and to have thick and padded walls. All these add to the longevity of the product, and will also survive all trips and journey well. On plane or bus trips, your travel bag might be tossed in the baggage compartments, and you want to rest assured that in such cases your bag and all the items inside it will remain unscathed. And if you opt for a high-quality travel bag – this will always be the case.

Benefits of dog travel bags

There are some clear benefits to owning a nifty dog travel bag. One of these is its space saving benefit, as well as ease of carrying. No need for complicated and inadequate packing solutions – you can gather all your dog-related items and pack them neat and separate. Avoid plastic bags, backpacks, filled car trunks, and smashed food bowls. A travel bag makes it all compact and easy to reach at all times.

In short, dog travel bags are a great accessory to own if you often travel with your pet. They save you a lot of effort when packing and organize all your dog items for quick use. Re-invent your traveling with a dog – with the help of a travel bag, it will be made so much easier and truly stress-free.

What is the Best Type of ID for My Dog While Travelling?

What is the Best Type of ID for My Dog While Travelling?

Travelling with our dogs is an exciting experience, but it also comes with responsibility – ensuring they are safe at every turn. Whether you’re heading out on a road trip together, camping with your canine companion by your side, jet-setting on a flight, or hiking your local trails, one of the most critical aspects to consider is proper identification. While traditional ID tags have been a reliable choice and are often seen as the standard ID solution, there are many innovative options for today’s dog parents to choose from.In this article, we’ll explore the significance of dog identification during travel and delve into many of the options available beyond just traditional hang tags. From microchips and QR codes to GPS tracking devices, discover the many ways to keep your pup safe and accounted for on your next adventure. Why is Dog ID Important When Travelling? Before we get into the specifics of different ID options for your pup, let’s start at the beginning. Why is dog ID necessary while travelling, and how can something so simple keep your dog safe? Every dog parent should be aware of the risk of their pup going missing. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 10 million pets go missing every year in the United States. While it is always a frightening experience when a pet goes missing, imagine it happening somewhere far from home that you and your dog aren’t familiar with. You don’t know where they will go or where to start looking. It can happen in the blink of an eye despite taking all precautions. Kennel locks fail, leashes break, and dogs can take off quickly when spooked. Even if your dog is picked up and taken to the local shelter eventually, that is only a piece of the puzzle in bringing them home safely. Without proper identification, the shelter workers have no way of knowing who this dog belongs to, whether they are a stray or someone’s beloved pet, or how to contact you to let you know that they have been found safe. Ensuring your dog has proper ID at all times can make all the difference in whether they are brought home safely.

What Do I Do if My Cat Ingests Marijuana?

What Do I Do if My Cat Ingests Marijuana?

We’ve all seen the funny social media videos of pets “greening out” after ingesting some weed, but can marijuana be dangerous for your cat? While it’s typically not fatal, marijuana toxicity can create a stressful situation for both you and your feline friend. In some cases, it can also have severe consequences. This guide will share the essential information you need to know about cats and marijuana, including the common symptoms of marijuana toxicity in cats, understanding the potential risks, and, most importantly, knowing what steps to take if your cat has ingested something they shouldn’t. Plus, we’ll discuss cat-friendly CBD products and share tips for calming your cat safely and effectively. Let’s get started… Is Marijuana Bad for Cats? With the growing number of states legalizing marijuana, this is a question that we have been hearing more frequently. Is marijuana toxic for cats? Should you be concerned if you accidentally leave something out and your cat now appears to be high? The short answer is yes! Cats are particularly sensitive to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound in marijuana that is responsible for the psychoactive effects (the relaxed, euphoric feeling that you experience). Plus, their small size means it takes significantly less to affect them. In most cases, if caught and addressed quickly, your cat will fully recover from marijuana toxicity. However, it can lead to long-term and even life-threatening complications. How Are Cats Exposed to Marijuana? In nearly all cases of marijuana toxicity, the affected cat wasn’t given marijuana to ingest. Instead, they get into something they shouldn’t, leading to trouble. There are several ways your cat may be exposed. If you or your friends/family smoke, ensure your cat is safely contained in another room. Even inhaling the second-hand smoke can have serious consequences. You can reduce the risk even further by placing a rolled towel along the bottom of the door to your cat’s safe room to block any smoke from entering. If you smoke outdoors, check first to ensure all windows are closed. Keep all marijuana and edibles up and out of your cat’s reach. Cats are curious creatures prone to nibbling on things they discover around the house. This includes live plants, dried weed products, marijuana-infused products, and even discarded joints. Signs of Marijuana Ingestion in Cats Most cases of marijuana toxicity aren’t identified because you see your cat nibbling on the offending product. Instead, it often starts with noticing that your cat is acting “off” and discovering the cause of trouble after a careful investigation. As cat parents, we should familiarize ourselves with the most common signs and symptoms. Knowing what to look for will allow us to identify and address the problem sooner. This includes: Drooling VomitingDilated pupils Extreme sleepiness or excitement Agitation, anxiety, or depressionExcessive vocalizationLoss of coordination or balanceLow blood pressure Slow heart rateLow body temperature TwitchingSeizures or comaSome cats will simply act "off." You know your cat better than anyone. Trust your gut, even if you can't pinpoint the exact signs or symptoms.

Dog Who "Cried Endlessly" at Indiana Shelter Gets Adopted

Dog Who "Cried Endlessly" at Indiana Shelter Gets Adopted

Being in a shelter is extremely stressful for dogs. In most shelters, dogs spend a better part of their day alone, with little to do. The lives of shelter dogs are more stressful and frustrating than is normal and these pooches are often afraid, anxious, and sad. That’s exactly what happened to one Indiana shelter dog. After spending more than 260 days in the shelter, Major, who was once a jolly-ball-loving boy, started to sit in his kennel and cry endlessly. Major, a four-year-old pitbull mix, was brought to the Humane Society for Hamilton County as a stray. Although Major was brought as a stray, the shelter staff discovered he had a microchip. They promptly contacted the pup’s family, who said they would come to pick up their dog ASAP, but they never showed. According to a Facebook post shared by the Humane Society for Hamilton County, Major has become filled with stress and anxiety after spending night after night alone in his room. Although lonely, Major evenings were never quiet as he cried himself to sleep every night. In an attempt to find Major a loving home, the shelter shared a video of a sorrowful Major lying in his bed. The post went viral, giving the staff hope that Major would find a loving, forever home. And that’s exactly what happened! In an updated Facebook post, the shelter shared that Major has finally found a loving family and a forever home.“Today, we are overjoyed to share some MAJOR news with you: After capturing the hearts of people worldwide, Major has found his forever home! As he walked out the door with his new family, we couldn’t help but feel a major-sized hole in our hearts, but it’s quickly filled with happiness knowing that he’s found his perfect match.”The wonderful news reached hundreds of thousands of animal lovers worldwide who have been following Major’s story since the beginning.“To everyone who shared Major’s story, your support and kindness made all the difference. Because of you, Major’s tale reached far and wide, leading him straight to the loving arms of his new family. Thank you for being a part of Major’s journey and for helping us make miracles happen.” The shelter also reminded its followers that many other dogs are patiently waiting for their person and a forever home. The surge in unwanted cats and dogs and low adoption rates are fueling the nationwide shelter crisis. Many shelters, including the Humane Society for Hamilton County, are overflowing with pets and operating at maxed-out capacity. “Every single dog here has their own story,” the shelter added. “They might not all have gone viral, but they are all just as deserving of love, care and a safe space to call home. The shelter is a stressful environment for them and every day they wait for their turn. They have so much affection to give and are waiting for someone like you to change their world.” The shelter’s staff encourages anyone who applied to adopt Major to visit them and meet other adoptable dogs who are just as deserving of love and a place to call their own.“Major, we’ll miss your playful antics and wagging tail, but we know that your new family will cherish you just as much as we have. Farewell, sweet boy, and may your days be filled with endless love and happiness,” the shelter wrote.Join the PetGuide community. Are Dogs Smarter than Cats?

Are Dogs Smarter than Cats?

The rivalry between cats and dogs is an age-old thing. Many pet owners are divided in their affections, as some adore kitties, but others are strictly doggo lovers. And this rivalry poses an intriguing question – could there be a difference between cats and dogs? While both are cuddly and loveable, they are inevitably different. So, could it be possible that  dogs are smarter than cats, or vice versa? This is a popular question in the scientific world, and many tried answering it. Let’s see what they came up with. Are Dogs Smarter than Cats? For ages, the debate on the rivalry between cats and dogs has been ongoing. Ultimately, however, it all depends on how you define “smart”. Dogs are often loved for their obedience, their ability to be trained and follow commands, their unwavering loyalty, and their excellent guardian traits. Cats, on the other hand, are known for their independence, their adaptability and problem-solving skills, their free and restless spirit, and their cuddly nature. So, as we can see, while generally different in personalities, both of these animals possess certain cognitive skills – but is one smarter than the other?Recent studies have revealed that both dogs and cats possess unique cognitive abilities suited to their respective lifestyles and evolutionary histories. Meaning, they are completely different animals. Dogs, for example, originated from domesticated canines, far, far back in history. They were bred over thousands of years to work alongside humans, protect flocks, help with hunting, and guard homes. This, in turn, has likely influenced their ability to understand and communicate with us, and to be so devoted as pets. But cats are different. In stark contrast to doggos, cats have retained more of their wild instincts, allowing them to thrive in a variety of environments and situations. All of this means that you can’t really compare the intelligence of a cat and that of a dog. It’s like comparing apples and oranges – it just doesn’t go. Each animal excels in different areas and possesses different strengths. It's more accurate to appreciate the unique qualities of each species rather than trying to determine which one is "smarter."But even so, scientists tried to reach a decisive conclusion. They studied both cats and dogs and ultimately reached an answer - at least, scientifically speaking. Their research shows that dogs are smarter than cats! Some of you might find this answer surprising but don’t raise a revolt just yet. Cats are super intelligent even so. It’s just that they are likely not as smart as some dogs are. The secret is in “smartness” itself. Dogs are intelligent in their own way. They are generally more reliant on humans for problem-solving tasks, but they are adept at learning from observation and experience. They can also be trained to perform a wide range of tasks, from simple tricks to complex behaviors, such as guiding the visually impaired or detecting explosives. Cats, however, are natural hunters and possess excellent problem-solving skills. They are known for their agility, stealth, and ability to strategize when stalking their prey. In a domestic setting, cats demonstrate problem-solving abilities when navigating obstacles, finding hiding spots, and even manipulating objects to access food or toys. So, both of them have different positive traits and different types of intelligence. But it could be that dogs, with their ability to learn and obey commands, are just a tad bit smarter.

Whether you plan on staying for a night or more, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy your trip while making a difference for the most vulnerable.Located on 3,700 acres, it is home to up to 1,600 animals on any given day. The animals in their care include cats, dogs, birds, bunnies, horses, pigs, and others. There are 18 RV sites with 30—and 50-amp power, septic, and water hookups. Free Wi-Fi is also available to visitors. While the sites can accommodate larger RVs and trailers, any over 21 feet may have difficulty navigating the roads within the sanctuary, and it is recommended that these guests have a separate vehicle to get around during their stay.If you don’t have an RV, cottages and cabins are also available on-site. The most significant differences between these two options are the guest capacity and location. Cottages can accommodate groups of up to six, while cabins are designed for only one or two people. Unlike the cabins, which share a group patio area, each cottage has its own dedicated patio or deck.Visitors can reserve a tour of the sanctuary to see the beautiful views and the incredible work the organization is doing or sign up to volunteer. It’s the perfect opportunity for those who want to give back, dedicating a small portion of your vacation to helping around the sanctuary and leaving you with the good feeling of knowing you made a difference. You can schedule a volunteer shift up to a year in advance with tasks including:Walking the animalsPreparing and serving foodQuality time playing with or petting the animalsCleaning (dishes, mopping, etc.)Making toys or treatsGeneral maintenance and upkeep on the groundsThe minimum age for volunteering depends on the task, with the Bunny House and Parrot Garden accepting volunteers as young as eight. If camping isn’t your travel style, no problem. Five minutes down the road, you will find the Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile, a boutique pet-centric hotel. The location offers 40 rooms and suites, a complimentary vegan continental breakfast, an on-site pet grooming facility, and a dog park complete with a seasonal splash pad. With an allowed maximum of four pets per room and no pet fee, the hotel takes “pet-friendly” to a whole new level! Are you traveling without your pet and need to get your “fix” of cuddles and playtime? You can also host a sleepover with a dog or cat from the sanctuary at the hotel. Simply contact the hotel in advance to arrange for a furry sleepover guest.Of course, if you fall in love with an adoptable animal during your stay, you can always apply to add that furry (or feathered) friend to your family before leaving.Make your reservation to stay at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary on their website today!Join the PetGuide community. 10 Foods That Are Bad for Dogs

10 Foods That Are Bad for Dogs

What is a Hydrolyzed Protein Diet for Dogs?

What is a Hydrolyzed Protein Diet for Dogs?

Protein is a very important part of a dog’s diet. However, some doggos might have a sensitive digestive system or even allergies. In such cases, a hydrolyzed protein diet becomes essential as it provides important nutrients without being heavy on their tummy. But what is hydrolyzed protein exactly? A hydrolyzed protein diet for dogs is a type of food that is formulated specifically for dogs that have allergies or certain food sensitivities. The protein sources in this diet are all broken down into smaller molecules, thanks to a complex process called hydrolysis. What this process does is reduce the size of the protein molecules, making them less likely to trigger an allergic reaction. So, if your doggo is a bit sensitive, this could be what’s needed!Veterinarians often recommend hydrolyzed protein for dogs that are diagnosed with intolerances or  food allergies. Thanks to this, your pet can receive all the essential nutrients without any adverse reactions being triggered. The most common sources of hydrolyzed protein in these diets are beef, chicken, salmon, or soy. So it’s just like most of the common dog foods - but in a different, better form.

Why Do My Betta Fish’s Fins Look Ripped?

Why Do My Betta Fish’s Fins Look Ripped?

Have you noticed a ragged or torn fin on your betta fish? Don’t panic! Ripped fins often look bad, but they are a common struggle betta fish keepers face. This guide will explore the potential causes of betta fin damage, from environmental stress to rough tank mates. I’ll also share treatment options to help your betta look and feel great again and preventative measures to reduce the risk of future problems. Why Do My Betta Fish’s Fins Look Torn? There are several reasons you may notice damage to a betta fish’s fins, all of which require your prompt attention. An actual tear, split, or bite is the result of a physical injury. However, one other condition is often confused with a tear – fin rot. This condition results from poor water quality and excess stress levels, weakening the fish’s immune system. It’s commonly seen in bettas that are adopted from a pet store setting due to the small containers they are kept in and the overstimulating environment. The most significant visual difference between fin rot and a torn fin is the presence of black, brown, red, or white edges to the fin. You may also see small fuzzy growths or white spots on the fin.If you suspect your fish is suffering from fin rot, you will need to act quickly, as the condition becomes more difficult to treat the more it progresses. This includes quarantining the fish if they are in a community tank, cleaning the tank to prevent further problems, careful maintenance of the hospital tank, and the use of medication for more severe cases.4 Common Causes of Torn FinsFin damage or tears result from physical damage. However, this damage could have occurred from several different causes. The first step in helping your betta recover is to identify what happened. Here are a few of the most common causes of torn fins in betta fish:Tank DecorationsTake a moment to look at the decorations in your betta’s tank or aquarium. Run your fingers along the edge and feel for sharp or rough surfaces. Items like fake plants, decorative sculptures, rocks, and driftwood can snag your fish’s delicate fins as they brush against it while swimming past. Additionally, other tank features like heaters and thermometers may develop sharp edges if they are older and have suffered some wear and tear.Rough Tank MatesBettas are commonly known as aggressors but aren’t the only fish species that can get rough with others. Occasionally, even species known to be gentle community fish can bully others in the same aquarium. In these situations, the damage results from the aggressor biting your betta’s fins. There are several reasons why your fish may become aggressive towards one another, including:Poor water conditions causing stressLack of space for the number of fishFood availabilityTerritorial behaviorsIllness or diseaseThe behavior may also result from pairing your betta fish with incompatible tank mates. Not all fish species can live together peacefully.Improper Water ConditionsBetta fish can become stressed quickly from changes to their water conditions, lowering their immune systems and putting them at risk of damage to their fins. This is the result of stress caused by their environment. Check the conditions of your aquarium, including lighting, temperature, and pH balance.Something as simple as allowing the water temperature to drop too low can trigger damaging behaviors. When experiencing cold temperatures, for example, betta fish will often try to burrow into the aquarium gravel as a survival mechanism. The gravel can easily damage their fins during this process.BoredomWe have all seen the small, decorative fish tanks often marketed to betta fish. While these can be found on the shelves of almost every big box pet store, they aren’t suitable for proper betta fish care. If this is the first time you are hearing this, don’t blame yourself – there is a lack of education in the pet space relating to a betta’s needs. You purchased a product marketed specifically for betta fish, which is a well-meaning decision.Unfortunately, these little tanks lack the space needed for your betta to swim around comfortably, leading to boredom and increased stress. As your betta struggles with this feeling of boredom, they may start to bite and damage their fins. Will Torn Betta Fins Grow Back?Yes! If your betta’s fin damage is the result of a tear or bite (not fin rot), it can heal. But first, you will need to identify the cause of the damage and make changes to the aquarium to prevent it from happening again.

Common Garden Plants That Can Send Your Dog into Cardiac Arrest

Common Garden Plants That Can Send Your Dog into Cardiac Arrest

Spring is finally upon us! For dog owners, spring is always a welcoming sight as it signals the start of longer walks in the park and more time in the garden. The backyard is usually a fun place for you and your pooch to play and run around. However, certain types of plants are dangerous to dogs and can make your backyard a safety hazard. Experts advise that some spring plants and flowers, both indoors and outdoors, can be harmful to your pooch and should be avoided at all costs. Some of these plants are known to cause upset stomachs, itching, vomiting, and, in severe cases, even cardiac arrest in dogs. Craig Wilson, co-founder, director, and gardening expert at Gardeners Dream, has listed the toxic flowers and plants you should keep from the home and garden if you have a dog. DaffodilsDid you know that daffodils, one of the most popular heralds of spring, are poisonous to both cats and dogs? These trumpet-shaped flowers contain a toxic compound called lycorine which causes stomach pain and diarrhea when ingested. Bulbs are the most toxic part of the daffodil plant, but dogs can also get sick after consuming the flowers. Even drinking the water from a vase that contains daffodils can cause toxicity in dogs.Tulips All parts of the tulip plant - bulbs, stems, leaves, and flowers - are toxic to both cats and dogs. The bulb stores the highest concentration of toxins, making it the most toxic part of the plant. Most dogs will experience drooling, diarrhea, and vomiting after consuming tulips. In severe cases, dogs can experience heart problems and difficulty breathing.IrisesColorful and hardy irises are a popular flower in many household gardens. Unfortunately, irises are toxic to dogs and can make your pooch sick if ingested or touched. Irises contain irisin, a toxic compound that triggers tissue irritation when swallowed or touched. The bulbs and rhizomes hold the highest concentration of irisin, making this plant particularly hazardous to dogs who like to dig.Hyacinths Many people like planting hyacinths in their gardens, but these tall and vibrant plants are harmful to dogs. Hyacinths belong to the same family as tulips and contain calcium oxalate crystals. These crystals are present in all areas of the plant and are shaped like needles. When ingested, these crystals can pierce a dog’s soft tissues, causing severe pain.Symptoms of hyacinth poisoning also include diarrhea, vomiting, abnormal breathing, increased heart rate, and convulsions. If you suspect your pooch has ingested any part of the hyacinth plant, take them to the vet as soon as possible. BluebellsAll parts of the bluebell plant contain a toxic compound called glycosides. Not only are bluebells harmful to cats and dogs, but this plant is also toxic to horses and cattle. If any part of the bluebell plant is consumed, it can cause stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. When eaten in large quantities, bluebells can be fatal.Hydrangeas Many gardeners love the look of hydrangeas in the spring and fall, but dog owners beware - hydrangeas are toxic to dogs. Dogs can become poisoned from eating any part of the hydrangea plant, as they all contain cyanogenic glycoside.Chewing plants with this toxic compound releases cyanide and can result in loss of appetite, vomiting, depression, and increased heart rate. Munching on the flowers, buds, leaves, or bark of the hydrangea plant can make dogs sick, so keep a close eye on your pooch whenever they are sniffing around a hydrangea plant. These are just some of the most common plants that can make your dog sick, but there are more! If your pooch likes to munch on plants, it’s best not to leave them unsupervised in the garden.Join the PetGuide community. Are Squeaky Toys Safe for Dogs?

Are Squeaky Toys Safe for Dogs?

When it comes to dog toys that engage and entertain – squeaky toys are a tried and true classic that fits the bill perfectly. While most dogs love the high-pitched tones these chewable and squeezable toys produce, some owners are not as thrilled and are wondering if there are any potential dangers when it comes to squeaky toys. Could the squeaker come off and pose a choking hazard, or can mold build up inside the hollow center, etc? These are all valid questions, so let’s see what the answers are. Are Squeaky Toys Safe for Dogs? Safety Concerns To Have In MindSafety should always be paramount when it comes to choosing toys for your furry friend, especially when it comes to squeaky toys. Not every squeaky toy is created equal, and some may pose risks to your canine companion. Before selecting a squeaky toy, it's crucial to consider several safety factors.Firstly, pay close attention to the material of the toy. Opt for squeaky toys made from durable, non-toxic materials. Avoid toys with small parts that could be easily chewed off and swallowed, as this could lead to potential choking hazards. Ideally, the squeaker should be highly inaccessible, such as is the case in these  Multipet Loofa Dog Toys with a hidden internal squeaker. The long tubular body of the toy concealed the squeaker and is also super fun for pooches to carry and toss around.

What Should I Do if My Rabbit Stops Eating?

What Should I Do if My Rabbit Stops Eating?

Rabbits are adorable creatures but can also be hard to care for. Why? They are delicate and sensitive creatures that are also masters of hiding when something’s wrong. Often, by the time rabbit lovers recognize there’s a problem, it has already progressed into something much more severe. If you have recently noticed your beloved bunny isn’t munching on their usual hay or rabbit pellets or turning their nose up to their favorite treats, that’s a red flag!In this guide, I will explore some of the most common reasons a rabbit may stop eating, including potential health risks, causes of stress, and more. Plus, I’ll share steps to help your furry friend feel better quickly. What is a Healthy Rabbit Diet? Rabbits are strict herbivores, meaning their diet only consists of plant-based foods. But this doesn’t mean that all vegetables and plants are a healthy option. To provide your rabbit with the best possible quality of life, you should provide them with a balanced diet, including hay or grass, leafy greens, and a small amount of commercial rabbit pellets. Plenty of fresh hay is one of the most essential elements of a healthy rabbit diet. Like water, Timothy grass hay or oat grass hay should be available to your rabbit at all times. Remove and replace your rabbit’s hay if it has been sitting long enough that it no longer looks and smells fresh. But what about vegetables? After all, everyone knows that rabbits love carrots. Right? Many fruits and vegetables can be offered as a tasty treat for your rabbit, but they shouldn’t be a staple of their diet. Some safe snacks that can occasionally be offered to your rabbit include carrots, green peppers, Brussels sprouts, apples (without seeds), strawberries, bananas, and melons. How Will I Know If My Rabbit Isn’t Eating? Feeding a rabbit isn’t quite the same as feeding a dog. You aren’t going to fill a dish full of kibble or pellet, place it in front of them, and watch them empty the bowl. Instead, most rabbits enjoy nibbling at their hay slowly throughout the day. With this routine, how will you know if your rabbit isn’t eating? Will it be noticeable? Keep Track of the Food You’re OfferingPay attention to how much food you are giving your rabbit each day. How much of the food (hay and pellets) being placed in their cage or enclosure is being eaten? How much are you removing and replacing due to it sitting untouched? If you suspect trouble, you may want to limit the food offered, giving smaller amounts and checking or topping it up frequently throughout the day. This can make it easier to spot if anything is being consumed, allowing you to better understand the situation. Pay Attention When Cleaning When cleaning your rabbit’s cage, take a moment to assess how much waste you are removing. The amount of fecal matter being produced and the size/quality of this waste can provide insight into your rabbit's health.Your rabbit’s poop should be small, brown balls that are somewhat dry due to the large amount of hay. Any change in that texture is a sign of trouble, including sticky, rock-hard, watery, soft, or smaller waste. If your rabbit has stopped eating, it will eventually stop going to the bathroom entirely. Other Warning Signs The loss of nutrition that occurs when a rabbit stops eating can lead to other changes. These warning signs include weight loss, teeth grinding, or decreased activity. How Long Can Rabbits Go Without Eating? Rabbits have very elaborate and complex digestive systems that need consistent and regular food to avoid uncomfortable, painful, or even life-threatening illnesses. While some rabbits can, in extreme situations, go without food for a couple of days, the risk of illness increases drastically after just 12 hours. Considering this timeframe, you should contact your veterinarian immediately if your rabbit hasn’t eaten anything in more than eight hours.

How Do I Train My Dog to Wear a Harness?

How Do I Train My Dog to Wear a Harness?

Enjoying a leisurely walk or adventurous hike with your dog is an incredible way to spend quality time together and strengthen your bond. However, a dog that pulls and lacks leash manners can quickly turn this fun experience upside down. While collars have long been the standard for walking, many veterinarians and trainers are now sharing the benefits of using a harness. They are generally safer and more comfortable for dogs of all ages. However, not every dog will instantly take to wearing a harness the first time they are introduced. In this guide, I will walk you through the steps of introducing a harness to your dog, building positive associations, and setting both you and your dog up for long-term success. From choosing the right harness to mastering the process of putting it on, you’ll be prepared to hit the pavement with your canine companion in style and comfort. What Are the Benefits of Using a Harness?Let's take a step back before I walk you through training your dog to wear a harness. Why should you consider using a harness for your dog? What benefits does it offer over a typical collar? The most significant difference between a collar and a harness, and the reason why most veterinarians and dog trainers recommend harnesses, is the risk of injury. When your dog wears a collar, all pressure is put directly on their throat. If your dog pulls or tries to take off after a temptation (like a squirrel or to play with another dog), the pressure on their throat can cause significant damage. In the most severe cases, the impact of the collar on your dog’s throat can cause a life-threatening injury.Harnesses, on the other hand (or the other paw), disperse the pressure across your dog’s chest. Not only is this a more extensive area, but it’s better suited for handling this pressure without injuries (assuming the harness is properly fit to your dog).Depending on the activities you plan to enjoy with your dog, a harness could introduce additional features. This could include harnesses and support to assist a senior dog with mobility, a cooling harness for hot summer days, a harness with built-in backpacks to carry their gear while hiking, seatbelt attachments for safe car travel, and more. What Age Should Your Dog Start Wearing a Harness?Eight weeks old is the earliest age you should put a harness onto a young puppy. At this age, puppies are generally very open to new skills and experiences, making it the perfect time to introduce something new. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t train your dog to wear a harness if you are considering making this change later in life. Many adults and even senior dogs learn to wear and love their harnesses with a bit of time and a little patience. How Long Does It Take a Dog to Get Used to a Harness? The time it will take for your dog to get used to a harness will vary from dog to dog. Some pups will accept the harness quickly, comfortably wearing it and running around confidently right away. However, this isn’t true for every dog.If your dog is older and set in their ways or nervous when faced with new experiences, working through these steps may take a lot longer. Be patient and focus on creating a positive association with the harness by introducing praise and rewards. Allow your dog to set the pace, moving from one step to the next only when they are ready. This is the best way to set them up for long-term success (the ultimate goal). How to Train Your Dog to Wear a Harness: Step-By-StepBefore you start training, take a moment to consider what motivates your dog. While most dogs can be motivated with high-value treats, you may find your dog is better inspired to try something new with the offer of playtime with a favorite toy or even with simple praise and attention from you, their person. Knowing this is the secret to training success!Step One – Choosing a HarnessThe first thing to consider is the style of harness best suited for your dog. There are several factors to consider when shopping for the right harness. This includes your dog’s size, the weight of the harness, the adjustability, the material, how easy it is to clean, and any special features the harness may offer. You may even need to consider different harnesses for different situations. For example, you may prefer a classic nylon harness for walks around the block with your pup. However, if you are planning a challenging hike, your dog may be better served by a stronger and more supportive adventure harness with a handle to assist with any obstacles along the way.Finding the correct harness is essential, as your training will focus on making that specific harness a positive trigger for your dog. For the training process to be effective, this harness should be used.Step Two – Introduce the HarnessIn the early stages of training, you’re not going to put the harness on your dog. Instead, you want to give them a chance to check it out and realize it’s not something to be afraid of.To begin, place the harness on the ground in the comfort of your own home. Allow your dog to sniff at it and look it over. As they interact with the harness, occasionally offer praise or a treat. This will start to introduce the idea that the harness brings good things. When you see that they give the harness no more interest than a rug or your shoes (assuming they don’t chew your shoes), you can move on to the next step.

UK Dog Is Recovering After 130+ Coins Were Removed From His Stomach

UK Dog Is Recovering After 130+ Coins Were Removed From His Stomach

Missing any cash? An owner from Swindon in the UK did and was shocked when he discovered how his money went missing. The vets were equally shocked because they discovered that Charlie, the little  Bichon Frise, had eaten 133 coins, equalling more than £18!The mischievous little Bichon was taken to Thameswood Vets in Swindon, after the owners became concerned for his health, thinking he was ill. Their doubts proved true. A quick ultrasound revealed an obvious obstruction in the pet’s tummy. At first, the vet thought it was a piece of plastic, and scheduled an operation to remove the obstruction. But the surgery left him shocked. "It was a surprise for everybody,"  said vet Matheus Nerone, who carried out the surgery. Because once the stomach was opened, a “hoard” of 133 coins was discovered, adding up to £18 and 20 pence. "We opened his stomach and found 133 coins inside him," Dr. Nerone explained. "We did find some pieces of plastic there as well - but the owners had no idea that he had eaten the coins."Everyone was left scratching their head, wondering how on earth did Charlie ingest so many coins. "I don't think they had been there that long - maybe the night or two nights before he came in - because of the size of the obstruction there.” the Dr. said. "He felt sick so if he had eaten those coins a few days ago, he would have been sick before then."Of course, the doctor revealed that it is not uncommon for dogs to  ingest all sorts of things, especially loose change. "It does happen but usually they stop after having a couple of them [coins] - but 133 coins is an impressive amount!"Luckily, the surgery went well, and mischievous little Charlie is now making a good recovery. Thanks to the owner’s keen eye, a real tragedy was prevented, as Charlie could have been in big trouble without quick attention. "Many coins contain zinc which can be poisonous and lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and a lack of appetite," Dr. Nerone clarified. "We are monitoring his blood, but we are hopeful that everything's going to be fine."So next time you’re missing some change, consider all the possibilities!

What to Look for When Buying A Travel Bag

Everyone has different preferences on what is important or not when deciding on a travel bag, but I want to offer my opinion on some of the most important things that a travel bag should have.

Durability and Water Resistance

If you’re traveling with your dog, you need to be prepared for wet weather conditions. A travel bag that can handle different types of weather conditions is essential. Water-resistant linings will help protect the contents from water damage.

Storage Compartments

You want to look at the size of the bag’s compartments. Most dog travel bags have storage compartments, but are they large enough to carry all the essentials to make your pet comfortable?

The reverse is also true – are there too many compartments that they make most of the bag unusable.

Keep in mind that a large breed dog will likely need more storage than a small dog – just in dog food alone.

Accessories

Does the bag come with collapsible dog bowls, containers, and other accessories? Accessories can make a difference in the value of the bag.

If you also plan on having a suitcase, you’ll want the bag able to attach easily. If not, it can become challenging to jostle the bag around, especially when traveling long distances.

One of the most important factors to consider when buying a dog travel bag is its size. The bag should be big enough to fit your pet’s belongings, including dog food and water. But also not too large that it becomes cumbersome.

Ease of Care

It’s important to keep the bag clean during trips, and ease of care will come into play. Some bags come with removable inserts that make cleaning easy, and others are machine-washable on a delicate cycle.

When choosing the right dog travel bag, there are many options. Whether you’re looking for something small and affordable or something high-end and durable – look for value before purchasing.

Planning a Dog Road Trip? Here’s What You Need to Know

How to keep your dog safe in the car, safety first: keep your dog in the back seat, getting your dog comfortable with the carrier, temperature awareness, hotels, motels, and camps, vet visit before long car trips, paperwork and identification, food and water, traveling with kids, recognizing motion sickness in dogs, creating positive associations, step-by-step desensitization, 3 golden rules for success.

  • Travel Medications
  • How Dangerous Is it to Let a Dog Ride in the Back of a Truck?

How Dogs Can Ride Safely in a Truck

If you’re planning a road trip with your dog, it’s essential to ensure both safety and comfort.

Before you hit the road, consider these key dog road trip essentials:

  • Safety First : Use the right harness or carrier to keep your dog secure during the journey.
  • Best Gear for Car Travel : Choose the most suitable harnesses or carriers for dogs in cars.
  • Longer Trips : Plan for longer trips by making frequent stops and ensuring your dog stays comfortable.
  • Avoiding Dangerous Situations : Never let your dog ride in the back of a pickup truck.
  • Preventing Motion Sickness : Take steps to prevent motion sickness before the trip begins.

By following these tips, you can make your road trip with your dog safe and enjoyable.

Ensuring your dog’s safety during a road trip is crucial. Here are some dog road trip essentials to keep in mind:

  • Use Proper Restraints : Always restrain your dog with appropriate vehicle safety items to prevent distractions and potential injuries.
  • We recommend the PoyPet No-Pull Dog Harness for its reflective vest and dual leash connections.
  • Seat belts that attach to your car’s seat belt.
  • Seat belts that clip into the seat belt lock.
  • For ease of use, consider the PetSafe Adjustable Strap .
  • Important : Always attach the seat belt to your dog’s harness, not the collar, to avoid strangulation.
  • Secured with your car’s seat belt.
  • Provide a comfortable, elevated place for your dog to sit.
  • Double as a cozy dog bed, especially when lined with a blanket.
  • Consider the Kurgo Car Booster Seat for Small Dogs for long-lasting comfort and durability.

By following these tips, you’ll ensure that your dog’s road trip is safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Dog Carrier: A Must-Have for Safe Road Trips

Transporting your dog safely during a road trip is essential. One of the top dog road trip essentials is a hard-sided dog carrier, also known as a travel kennel or crate. Securing your dog in a carrier in the back seat can significantly reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accident.

  • The Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel is highly recommended for its durability and safety, having performed impressively in tests by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS).
  • Ensure the carrier is large enough for your dog to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around comfortably.
  • Place the carrier in the back seat and secure it with the seat belt to prevent sliding.
  • Avoid overloading the carrier with items that could cause injury or take up too much space.
  • Choose a carrier with good ventilation to allow proper airflow.
  • Always secure your dog in the back seat, never in the front.
  • Avoid distractions by keeping your dog out of your lap or off the dashboard.
  • Keep the door open and place your dog’s favorite items inside to encourage exploration.
  • Ensure proper ventilation and prepare for any messes by having a plan to clean the carrier safely.

By following these tips and using a secure dog carrier, you can ensure your dog’s safety and comfort during road trips.

Advice for Traveling With a Dog on Longer Car Trips

Longer road trips with your dog require careful planning to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort. Here are some dog road trip essentials to consider:

  • Monitor Temperatures : Always be aware of the temperature at your destination and along the way. Never leave your dog in the car, as temperatures can rise or fall to dangerous levels quickly.
  • Hot Weather : Even in mild temperatures (like 75°F), the inside of a car can become dangerously hot within minutes. Lowering the windows is not a safe solution and may allow your dog to escape.
  • Cold Weather : Dogs can suffer from hypothermia in cold temperatures. Keep extra blankets on hand and never leave your dog in a cold car.
  • Plan Ahead : If your trip includes overnight stays, check pet policies, costs, and other concerns before booking.
  • Dog-Friendly Accommodations : Make a list of dog-friendly places along your route to ensure you have options when you need to stop.
  • Health Check : A vet visit before the trip is essential, especially for longer journeys. Ensure your dog is healthy enough to travel.
  • Discuss Sedation : If your dog is prone to anxiety or stress during travel, discuss sedation options with your vet. Never self-medicate your dog with human or other animal medications.
  • Microchip Your Dog : Consider getting your dog microchipped before the trip for added security. Learn more about getting your dog microchipped .
  • Carry Important Documents : Keep copies of your dog’s rabies vaccination, health records, and a current photo in three places: in your car, attached to the carrier, and with you at all times.
  • Updated Tags : Ensure your dog’s collar has current tags, and bring an extra tag in case one needs to be replaced during the trip.
  • Limit Food Intake Before Travel : To reduce the risk of sickness or nausea, limit your dog’s food intake before hitting the road.
  • Pack Extra Food and Snacks : Bring enough pet food and snacks for the entire trip, as stores may not carry your dog’s usual brand. Changing food during stressful travel can lead to stomach issues. More about stomach upset and diarrhea in dogs .
  • Bottled Water : Take plenty of bottled water with you to keep your dog hydrated throughout the journey.
  • Plan Regular Breaks : Stop every 3–4 hours to allow your dog to stretch, potty, and drink water.
  • Clean Up After Your Dog : Bring poop bags and/or a scooper to clean up after your dog during stops.
  • Keep Your Dog Leashed : Always keep your dog leashed during walks to ensure safety.
  • Talk to Your Children : If traveling with kids, discuss the importance of giving the dog personal space without distractions.
  • Hitting or shaking the carrier
  • Feeding the dog human food or snacks
  • Teasing, pulling, or opening the crate or releasing the harness

By following these tips, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable road trip with your dog.

How to Prevent Motion Sickness in Your Dog

Motion sickness is a common issue, affecting 1 in 6 dogs, and can make road trips challenging. Here’s how to prevent motion sickness in your dog and make car travel more comfortable:

  • Common Symptoms : Shivering, excessive drooling, and reluctance to enter the car are signs that your dog may suffer from motion sickness.
  • Anticipatory Anxiety : Some dogs may begin to feel anxious even before the car ride starts, as they anticipate the nausea associated with travel.
  • Playtime in the Car : Start by playing with your dog’s favorite toy in the back seat of your parked car. This helps your dog see the car as a fun place.
  • Reward Calm Behavior : End each car session with a treat and praise to reinforce positive behavior.
  • Short and Positive Sessions : Keep the sessions short and enjoyable. Take your dog for a walk immediately after, ensuring they remain calm and happy.

By following these steps, you can help your dog overcome motion sickness and ensure a more enjoyable experience on road trips.

Gradual Steps to Prevent Motion Sickness in Your Dog

Overcoming motion sickness in your dog may require a gradual and patient approach. Here are some effective strategies:

  • Engage in Car Games : Spend a few weeks playing with your dog inside the car, keeping the doors open to prevent feelings of being trapped.
  • Meals in the Car : Feed your dog inside the car to create a positive association. Consider investing in a waterproof seat cover to protect your seats.
  • Shut the Car Doors : Start by closing the doors while your dog is inside.
  • Start the Engine : Turn on the engine but keep the car in park to acclimate your dog to the sound and vibration.
  • Short Movements : Begin with reversing a few feet, then driving back to the original position.
  • Increase Driving Distance : Start with a short, straight drive, followed by a trip around the block, and eventually a drive through the neighborhood.
  • Praise Calm Behavior : Consistently praise your dog for remaining calm during each step.
  • Avoid Distress : Stop the session before your dog becomes anxious or distressed.
  • End on a Positive Note : Always conclude each training session with a positive experience, such as a treat or playtime.

By following these steps, you can help your dog gradually overcome motion sickness and enjoy road trips more comfortably.

Car Climate and Comfort for Your Dog

Ensuring a comfortable environment in the car is crucial for preventing motion sickness in your dog. Here are some dog road trip essentials to keep in mind:

  • Maintain a Cool Climate : A hot, stuffy car can exacerbate motion sickness. Keep the vehicle cool with fresh air circulating at all times.
  • Window View : Some dogs feel better if they can see out of the window. For smaller dogs, consider using a booster seat or dog pod to elevate them to window level.
  • Pre-Travel Feeding : Feed your dog a handful of dry biscuits 1–2 hours before travel. This can help prevent an upset stomach, as traveling on a completely empty stomach may increase the risk of nausea.
  • Frequent Stops : Plan regular stops to let your dog stretch, walk, and hydrate.

Travel Medications for Dogs

If you need to make an urgent journey and don’t have time to desensitize your dog to car travel, medication may be necessary to prevent motion sickness. Here are some options:

  • Traditional Remedies : Some people use ginger or peppermint, as well as herbal options like skullcap and valerian. However, these remedies are not scientifically proven and may not be reliable for long trips.
  • Acepromazine (ACP) : A sedative with anti-motion sickness properties. ACP is not ideal for short journeys, as it can make the dog groggy for up to 8 hours. Additionally, some dogs may have an adverse reaction, becoming hyperactive instead of sedated. Always test this medication before a long journey.
  • Maropitant (Cerenia) : This drug effectively blocks the nausea center in the brain, making it an ideal choice for motion sickness. It works for 24 hours without sedating the dog, though it can be expensive. Learn more about Cerenia .

By managing your car’s climate and using appropriate medications when necessary, you can help your dog have a more comfortable and enjoyable road trip.

Reintroducing the Car as a Positive Space

To ensure stress-free car travel with your dog, focus on reintroducing the car as a fun and positive place while using medication to prevent nausea. By building new, positive associations and addressing motion sickness, you can pave the way for enjoyable road trips with your dog.

Why Are Dogs Still Riding in the Back of Trucks?

It’s a common yet alarming sight: a dog riding freely in the bed of a pickup truck. This practice is not only dangerous but also illegal in some states. Here’s what you need to know:

The Dangers

  • Risk of Injury : Dogs in truck beds are at high risk of injury. Sudden swerves, bumps, or stops can cause the dog to lose balance and be thrown around or even out of the truck.
  • Lack of Protection : Without any form of restraint, dogs in truck beds are exposed to the elements and road debris, further increasing the risk of harm.

Laws Regarding Dogs in Truck Beds

  • Legal Protections : While many assume that driving with a dog in the back of a truck is illegal everywhere, the reality is that laws are sparse and not comprehensive across the U.S.
  • Connecticut
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • Rhode Island
  • For more detailed information, visit the Animal Legal and Historical Center .

By being aware of the risks and legal implications, you can help protect dogs from the dangers of riding in truck beds and advocate for safer practices.

How Dangerous Is It to Let a Dog Ride in the Back of a Truck?

Allowing a dog to ride in the back of a pickup truck is extremely dangerous and can lead to severe injuries or death. Here’s why it’s critical to avoid this practice:

  • High Fatality Rate : According to DMV.org, thousands of dogs are killed each year while riding in the back of pickup trucks. This statistic doesn’t even account for the many non-fatal injuries.
  • Exposure to Road Debris : Dogs in truck beds are vulnerable to gravel, dirt, and other debris that can cause serious harm. If these particles can crack a windshield, they can certainly injure a dog’s eyes, nose, or lungs.
  • Impact Injuries : In the event of sudden braking or swerving, a dog can be thrown from the truck or slammed against the back of the cab, leading to life-threatening injuries.
  • Ride Inside the Cab : The safest place for a dog in a pickup truck is inside the cab, secured with a dog-friendly car restraint or harness.
  • Avoid Truck Bed Crates : While some crates can be secured to a truck bed, they do not protect against the dangers of gravel, dirt, or the lack of restraint during sudden stops.
  • Cross-Tethering Risks : Cross-tethering a dog in a truck bed to prevent falls or jumps still exposes them to the same risks, including debris and impact injuries.

The only truly safe way to travel with your dog, regardless of vehicle type, is to secure them with a dog car seat or harness in the back seat. Taking this precaution may delay your trip by a few minutes, but it could save your dog’s life. For more information, visit DMV.org .
