What our customers are saying...

"We took part in the Cape Reigna and 90-Mile Beach Day Tour from Paihia. It was one of our favourite things we did in New Zealand! Do not be put off by the long bus journeys, as they are worth every minute. Our tour guide was fantastic, and made us feel very welcome through his singing of traditional Maori songs. Highlights of the day include the fantastic sand boarding, driving on the beach, and seeing the famous cape lighthouse. We also made an early coffee stop in Doutbful Bay, a lovely surprise and something we wouldn't have known to do otherwise. If you have the time, would thoroughly recommend."

cape reinga bus tours from paihia

"This is an activity one can appreciate in any kind of weather. Except for skimming down sand dunes (some did in the wet sand), our driver made the day a very special experience. His friendly nature and knowledge about the area, culture and history helped us feel connected and engaged in the experience. It is a long day so not an easy task with this amount of people! We thoroughly enjoyed the stops, especially the Cape where were lucky enough for the mist and rain to clear. Also the drive onto 90 Mile Beach in a bus was epic! Highly recommend taking this Northern New Zealand adventure."

A visit to New Zealand is not complete without a journey to its northernmost point – Cape Reinga. Discover the wild beauty of this vast and untouched region, rich in Māori culture and tradition.

As you set off from Paihia in the Bay of Islands, your driver guide will keep you entertained with tales of the region’s history, from the arrival of the Māori to present day. Our drivers are an amazing bunch, passionate about what they do and about the area they call home. We reckon they’ll make your day even more special!

Stop at the seaside community of Taipa in Doubtless Bay for a morning snack, before continuing to the very tip of Aotearoa – Cape Reinga. According to Māori legend, the headland (also known as Te Rerenga Wairua) is the departing place for spirits making their final journey to the homeland, Hawaiki.

Soak up the atmosphere of this special and powerfully beautiful place, as the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea collide far below you. See the famous Cape Reinga Lighthouse and snap a picture of the signpost showing the distance from here to the rest of the world.

Depending on the tides, your journey to or from Cape Reinga will include a drive along the sand and surf on legendary Ninety Mile Beach – a registered highway. Smell the salt air, hear the roar of the waves and dig your toes into the sand as you soak up the remote beauty of this special place.

During your tour you’ll also visit the giant sand dunes at Te Paki Stream at the top of 90 Mile Beach. After a quick lesson on the basics of sandboarding, grab a board and make the climb to race down the dunes* – a real adrenaline rush! (*conditions permitting)

The scenery is just spectacular. Tiara’s commentary was informative and humorous - and his excellent boat handling skills were very much on display when we came in close to the Hole in the Rock and Bird Rock. We were really lucky and fluked coming across a pod of dolphins which swam and played around the boat. All in all a great experience and would highly recommend this company. Seating uncomfortable and squishy. Headed out to hole in the rock. Then stopped at Island for an hour. Stood waiting for boat longer than that as it was late returning. • kanyanatp2024 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Otehei Bay was amazing!!! Pros: The views on the ocean were great. My favourite part was the stopover at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island. The sandy beach and the clear blue water were amazing. The view from the top of the hill there was absolutely breathtaking. Cons: The hole in the rock itself was uninteresting and everything else along the way was just alright. This is also a big tour with 200+ people so it can get quite crowded, especially at the front so you can't see much there. Recommendations: If I were to go to the Bay of Islands again, I would choose to get a ferry to Otehei Bay only and spend a whole day there. There are many walking tracks and sandy beaches for you to relax on. If you take the cruise, you might want to take the morning cruise, stay on the island for a whole day and come back on the later ferry. The skipper will inform you on board that this is possible. We went past many of the Islands with god commentary as we did. We got through the Hole in the Rock and it was spectacular. We stopped in at Otahei Bay for lunch. We could order food and drinks from the cafe on the island and enjoyed a walk on the beach. This was a 90 minute stop off. Once back on the boat we took in more sights and commentary. We were able ot get off at Russell even though we boarded in Paihia We had a great time and I would recommend this half-day excursion to anybody. Read more Written December 2, 2023

Waited forty-five minutes beyond tour start time to wait for passengers booked on a different tour. Was told it wouldn’t cut the tour length down but did not stop at end for photos as stated in description. The oldest building in New Zealand was not kept up well or worth seeing. The lunch was good, however. Rainbow Falls was worth seeing but not the other one included. Waste of time and money. Should never wait that long for late passengers with a hard departure time like we had Read more Written 16 April 2024
  • sfkatie2024 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Kawiti glow work cave tour and Opua forest walk Glow worms can only be seen in the dark, and this cave is particularly suited to it. Special lights were provided to the walkers and the guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. There were handrails for the narrow walk and we were cautioned to watch our heads (it is a natural cave, folks). The forest walk was also informative (we learned about the indigenous trees) due to our driver/walk guide. This walk had some ups and down terrain in a narrow forest footpath, but it was not too hard for me. (I am in 70s and not great shape.) There was also an unexpected stop to admire the work of a really creative architect in a nearby town. Read more Written 8 March 2024
  • kathypettet 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Kawiti Glow Worm Cave Tour and Forest Walk Cave tour was excellent with great commentary, very educational and amazing little glow worms. The forest walk also fabulous and the tour host, his knowledge was remarkable, an extremely likeable gentleman. 10/10 Read more Written 27 February 2024

  • Hugh N 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent day out. This was an excellent day out and a great way to explore the local area. Our driver/guide was great and imparted a lot of information. The fact that there were only eight of us made it a great experience and the fish and chip lunch was superb, as was the local beer. Highly recommended. Read more Written 26 February 2024
  • Nadine L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Glowing review- pun intended Bay of Islands is lovely. We had great weather and Bill was a wonderful guide to the Caves, the forest with the 1000 year old Kapua trees and the town of Kawakawa to see Hundertstasse recycled public bathrooms and small town. Vans are small and able to get into areas the cruise ship tour busses cannot. They are prompt and make sure you return to your ship before they weigh anchor. Read more Written 24 February 2024
  • Farangdee 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A hidden treasure I place worthwhile visiting. We were lucky and had a guide just for ourselves. He was a young local boy from the region and he knew everything about the cave. It is really impressive to see these thousands of green shining points, especially at the ceiling of the cave they look like the milky way in a clear dark night. Read more Written 10 February 2024
  • Amy T 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A special treat We nearly missed connecting with our group due to long shuttle lines from our ship, but they managed to accommodate us and it was a really nice tour, with a lot of variety. The forest walk was really lovely and tranquil. Our guide was knowledgeable and kind. The family that operated the glow worm caves were very welcoming and that was such a treat. The caves are huge, with high "ceilings" like you're in a cathedral in some spots. Lots of beautiful glow worms. We were very happy on this tour. Thank you to everyone at Mullarkey Tours. • E4110ASjuliew 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Overpriced tour and underdelivered We went on this wine tasting tour. It was most disappointing 1st winery Marsden was good but lunch disappointing. The cruise ship had a Novo virus on board and eating from a shared plate with one set of utensils was unacceptable. Second stop was a hobby vineyard owned by an ex. American and he and an American man on the tour dominated the time on all sort of issues not related to wine (which was ordinary selection) Our driver should have cut the conversation short and got us to move on. The last vineyard did not give any commentary as to the wine tastings and our driver left us and came back 40 mins later. We were suppose to go to a Craft beer brewery... that didn't happen. • Leavethechickenshome 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Well run tour with the right mix of experiences. We arrived via cruise ship and highly recommend this tour for those looking for independent tours instead of ship tours. Small group and well run with professional and knowledgeable tour guide. The glow worms are glowy, and the cave itself is also a stunning work of nature. The kauri trees are majestic, and the forest preserve peaceful. So glad we got to experience both the caves and forest. We also enjoyed the small lunch break at Kawakawa. After visiting the art installation, we wandered into a local grocery store and purchased several local snacks to try. On our way back, we were given the option of being dropped off near the open market for more shopping or returning directly to the tender wharf. Just a very well done tour that let us sample some of the beauty of the area. Read more Written 19 October 2023
  • Navigator02402139146 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful and Tranquil Location Worth the visit. The outside surroundings are so peaceful and beautiful, the location is tranquil and quiet. We have been to Waitomo but still enjoyed this less commercial location. The walkway/boardwalk inside is in good condition and the guide was knowledgeable and easygoing. Felt the price was a little high at $40 per adult and $20 per child. Read more Written 22 April 2023
  • Natashya T 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful Wine Tour What a wonderful wine tour we had. We saw and tasted and purchased from 3 vineyards in the Paihia region. • dillonabby 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wine tour We had a fantastic time on the wine tour! Had some really good commentary on the way to the vineyards, a lovely platter. Then we went to the fat pig winery that was really nice to hear about the wines from the owner, we loved the white diamond wine! We also had to buy lemoncello at the next winery since it was so good! • 691nishac 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Not Happy Extremely disappointed!!! I booked the Glow Worm Tour as a Shore Excursion on my Cruise to New Zealand, through Expedia. In Bay of islands, ships are not docked on the port and use tenders to transport the passengers on shore. On 1st of Jan 2023, we were scheduled to visit Bay of Islands but due to rough waters the Captain decided to cancel the port of call as it was risky to transport passengers on the tenders. So we had to cancel our tour and we were hoping to get atleast some refund. To our surprise after hours of calls and back and forth we were told Mullarkey Tours will not refund our money and will forfeit the full cost of the tour. Other passengers who had booked the tour through Royal Caribbean got their full refund. My suggestion is as ships are not docked on port in Bay of Islands, possibility of cancelling the port of call is high and you are better off booking directly with the ship as you will the money back if anything changes. I lost money!! Save yours!! Read more Written 15 January 2023
