The Best Way to Visit Versailles
Dear Judith, The immensely grand royal estate of Versailles is only about 45 minutes from Paris. It's a very popular place and always busy, with long line-ups. That's why we always recommend finding a skip-the-line tour with transportation from Paris. It's how we do it and the only way to avoid those ticket lines at the estate. You arrive at the palace refreshed and ready to take in its full magnificence! Versailles is huge, and you don't want to arrive already exhausted by the trip getting there.
We learned the hard way that a priority-access visit with an experienced guide is the best way to see busy attractions like Versailles. Someone else has done all the organizing work, we don't have to figure out anything. And, by traveling with a knowledgeable guide, we learn more in less time, while having a far better time that we would on our own — even though we are experienced Paris travelers. We've done it both ways, but now we're wise to the fact that a guided tour is the way to go.
But the greatest thing about the best tours is that we get to skip the long lines! As you know, we hate standing in lines so, to us, this alone is worth the cost of the tour. Read our reviews and recommendations for the top day tours to Versailles.
The Best of Versailles with Priority Access
This small-group, priority-access tour from Paris is immensely popular and sure to sell out, so book early. Be sure to choose the full-day option that also includes a guided tour of the gardens plus Marie Antoinette's fantasy farm.
If you want to go on your own, getting from Paris to Versailles can be done if you're familiar with the Metro/RER system. In a nutshell — from Paris take RER Line C to the station called Versailles-Rive Gauche . Then it's just a ten-minute walk to the royal estate.

Louis XIV transformed his father’s hunting lodge into the monumental Château de Versailles in the mid-17th century, and it remains France’s most famous and grand palace. Situated in the leafy, bourgeois suburb of Versailles, 22km southwest of central Paris, the baroque château was the kingdom’s political capital and the seat of the royal court from 1682 up until the fateful events of 1789 when revolutionaries massacred the palace guard. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were ultimately dragged back to Paris, where they were ingloriously guillotined.

Make the most of Versailles this summer
If you think you've seen opulence before - take a visit to the Palace of Versailles . Few places in the world are as impressively over the top as the Hall of Mirrors, where the almost garishly bright gilt decor, reflected in the mirrors that line the walls, can be blinding on a sunny day.
If the interiors are too overwhelming, calm yourself down with a stroll around the gardens and the 55 water features ranging from lakes to pools and fountains.
Versailles is very popular as a destination and is always pretty busy so prepare yourself for long waits or get yourself a skip-the-line ticket .
The Trianon Estate
Estate of Trianon, 78000
Set aside by Louis XIV as a family retreat away from the central château, the Trianon complex is still impressively regal. Tasteful gardens surround two palaces, the Queen’s Hamlet, and a theatre. A neoclassical icon, the Petit Trianon is decorated in the style of famous resident Marie Antoinette, who dabbled in rustic living in her own village-like bolthole.
The gardens of Versailles
Château de Versailles, 78000
As impressive as the palaces of Versailles are, it’s the rambling, spectacular gardens that really steal the show. Explore the private groves, go boating on the Grand Canal, picnic under a tree, and admire the sculptures – including new works by contemporary artists. Don’t miss the musical fountain shows, which are held regularly throughout the week and on Saturday nights.
Le Potager du Roi
10, rue du Maréchal-Joffre, 78000
Now home to a renowned school of horticulture and landscape design, these rather glam allotments once provided just-picked produce for Louis’ table. The potager still grows rare fruits and vegetables, and preserves historic gardening techniques. After a nose around the gardens, stock up on jams and honeys to take home in the shop.
The town of Versailles
Versailles may be known for its opulent château, over-the-top decor and perfectly manicured gardens, but it’s also a vibrant city in its own right.
A walk through its elegant streets takes in a lively street market, adorable cafés and a Baroque cathedral. Take in horseback acrobatics at the National Equestrian Academy – shows are held most weekends throughout the season. Catch live music and water displays in the palace gardens.
If you’re in the mood for exquisite plates and starched linen, Alain Ducasse and Gordon Ramsay both have restaurants here.
La Mangette
38, rue Carnot, 78000
Skip the overpriced and over-subscribed palace restaurants and lunch like a local at this chic little canteen a couple of blocks away. The daily menu features local, sustainably grown, and mostly organic ingredients, and plenty of veggie-friendly options. Best of all, you can stock up on salads and other picnic essentials for a sun-kissed lunch in the gardens.
Notre Dame market
L’Équilibre
8, rue des 2 Portes, 78000
After a long day of traipsing around the regal grounds of the château, we’d give our kingdom for an apéro. Rest your feet over a glass of wine and a charcuterie plate at this charming, Basque-inspired tapas bar down a cobbled street. Regular live music and a generous daily happy hour only serve to sweeten the deal.
Getting to Versailles from Paris
From central Paris, take the RER line C to Versailles-Rive Gauche, a ten-minute walk from the château. Tourists naturally flock here in the summer, so get there early for a chance to gawp at the main palace’s jaw-dropping Galerie des Glaces and ostentatious throne room. Or pick up picnic supplies in town and wander the nearly 2,000 acres of gardens and parkland, which are almost always free to enter – and the only part of the complex open on Mondays.

Day 2 Plessis-Robinson - at Leisure
Day 3 giverny.
It is said that the history of France is written in her gardens, and this is reflected in the many different horticultural styles found across the country. Particularly delightful are the gardens of the famous French Impressionist Claude Monet in Giverny. He planted and painted here from 1883 until his death in 1926, gaining inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounded him. Explore the artist's flower garden, Clos Normand, as well as the Japanese-style water garden. These two areas are a beautiful contrast to one another, yet are equally wonderful to explore. The most famous feature is the lily pond, from which Monet gained so much inspiration, and his series of water-lily paintings is revered throughout the world. As you stroll through the enchanting gardens don't miss the exquisite wisteria-covered Japanese bridge - it too is depicted in many of Monet's greatest works of art. In the evening, we will gather as a group to enjoy a farewell drink.
Day 4 Paris - UK
Today we will return to St Pancras International by Eurostar.
