The day begins when we all meet at Stykkisholmur Harbour and sail out into Breidafjordur Bay : the whole area is very picturesque and there is a multitude of beautiful things that we will see as we make our way to a series of rocky cliffs that are located at the edge of the bay. As we are sailing, we will be dragging a specialized sea plow along the ocean floor, collecting a variety of delicious shellfish that we will be able to taste and handle later on.
Observe local wildlife in its natural habitat
Our boat is designed to get as close to the cliffs as possible , allowing us to get up close and personal with the many incredible bird species that reside in them. The cliffs are also famous for the dramatic rock formations that have been crafted by the ocean waves and volcanic activity in the area. We recommend bringing a camera along, so you can immortalize all the amazing things that you see on the tour.
Taste true Icelandic delicacies
Then, we will pull the specially designed sea plow up, which will be crammed full of amazing shellfish for you to handle and sample. We normally catch things like scallops, sea urchins, crabs, starfish, and sea cucumbers , offering children the chance to see these incredible sea creatures in the flesh. Then as an extra special treat, we will prepare the sea urchins and scallops for the guests to try, allowing you to sample some of the freshest sushi that you will ever taste.
We will then return to the harbor keeping a weather eye on the horizon for the white-tailed eagles and other seabirds that hover above our heads. This incredible tour is very popular with families and we will give you a coloring book with pictures of the various shellfish and sea life that you see on the trip. If you are looking for something that won’t take up your whole day, while also being educational and fun then this may just be the one for you.
Practical Information
Meeting point:
This is a meet on location tour so we will meet you at the town’s main port in Stykkishólmur. Stykkishólmur is about 175 km from Reykjavik which is about a 2-hour drive.
Age categories:
- Children 0-15;
- Teens 16-20
- Adults are from 21-67;
- Seniors 67+
What does meet on location entail?
Meet on location means travelling to the location of the tour yourself and then meeting our tour guides rather than being picked up and taken to the location.
How is it best to be ready for a pick-up for a tour with Arctic Adventures?
This is a great question. We ask all participants to be ready from the start of the pickup time indicated. This is because you may well be the first pick up of the day. Please be at your assigned location at the start time that you chose when booking the tour.
Here you should wait for your guide.
Have your email and phone number listed with us so we can contact you if we run into any trouble finding you.
View our pick-up locations in Reykjavík.
Can I drink alcohol before or during Arctic Adventures tours?
Before and during activities on the multi-day tours consumption of alcohol is prohibited. If we suspect that a participant is intoxicated, we will prohibit them from joining the activity.
After the activities of the day are finished, you are welcome to have a drink and relax.
Do you offer any family friendly tours, for younger children?
Yes, we do. Langjökull Ice Cave is a magical experience, the tour has no minimum age and is a wonderful option for the whole family. Whale Watching with our partner company Elding has been a favourite with families traveling with young children, these guys have a great success rate in seeing whales (upwards of 98% in the summertime).
Another option would be the Landmannalaugar Safari on this tour you get to explore parts of the Icelandic highlands and bathe in natural hot springs. Most of our super jeep tours are also suitable for children over the age of 6 years old. If you would like a nice and relaxing experience we would also recommend the Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon tour .
Can the itinerary for the tour change?
Your safety is our number one priority! Keeping this in mind, Arctic Adventures reserves the right to adjust the itinerary and/or take different routes depending on conditions. Please read more information in our cancellation policy .
Is there a guide on each Arctic Adventures tour?
Yes, there is a specially trained and certified guide on each of our tours. The only exception to this is for our self-drive tours .
All of our tours are guided in English.
Can the guide advise if I am eligible for rescheduling the tour and/or a refund?
No, for all your questions and concerns you would need to contact our customer service.
What type of power outlets are used in Iceland? Do I need to bring an adapter?
The standard in Iceland is 230V and 50Hz and we use F-type power sockets and plugs, so you might have to bring an adaptor if you are visiting from UK, USA, Canada or other countries using a different voltage, Hz or plugs.
How are the tours rated in terms of difficulty?
Our tours are split into four different categories that help participants to understand what to expect from the tour. The categories are Easy, Moderate, Challenging and Demanding. Each tour is rated making it easier to find tours that suit you.
For further information about the difficulty ratings and descriptions.
How does carbon offsetting work?
We’ve partnered with the Kolviður Fund in a new carbon offsetting program, which passengers can select to participate in at the time of booking.
The Kolviður Fund is the oldest, most respected carbon offsetting program in Iceland. With your support, one tree will be planted in special Kolviður forests in Iceland to carbon offset your tour with us.
Kolviður forests are strategically planted to absorb the maximum amount of CO2 and the forests are protected for a minimum of 60 years. During their lifetime the trees absorb carbon and store it in their root system, trunk, and branches. Trees also prevent soil erosion and maintain storage of carbon in the soil.

Unique 2-Hour Seafood Boat Tour in Breidafjordur Bay with Transfer from Stykkisholmur
Description
Come aboard for a voyage to Iceland's Westfjords. Join a magical cruise that ends with a feast of fresh scallops and roe for you to savour in.
This tour is perfectly suited to anyone who loves the open seas and wants to experience the breathtaking scenery of Iceland‘s western coastline.
Ringed with mountains, Breiðafjörður is large, shallow bay in West Iceland. Many intertidal areas and islands found here, but most of the islands are only inhabited during summer. However, the bay is ever-important for its fisheries, its large eider colonies and eiderdown collecting, and its precious algae which are harvested year-round.
The area is graced with an incredible diversity of flora and fauna and extensive forests and abundant plant life make it an ideal place for many species of birds who flock to the cliffs to nest every summer. These include common shag, glaucous gull, white-tailed eagle, common eider, black guillemot, grey phalarope, the brent goose and red knot. This place is a bird watcher‘s paradise!
You may even see seals playing on the shores, the slick black tail fins of whales, or leaping porpoises in the deeper waters. The area is quite literally teeming with life.
During the tour, a shellfish plough is lowered into the depths, raised and its contents emptied right on deck for you to see: scallops, sea urchins, crabs, starfish, sea cucumbers, and much more. Some of these are possible to eat fresh immediately, such as scallops and sea urchins, so you will have the freshest meal possible.
Let the crew take care of cleaning and shucking, and you‘ll enjoy your treats with soy sauce and wasabi (or plain, if you prefer!).
Don't miss this “taste” of Iceland‘s bounteous seas! Check booking availability by choosing a date.

What to bring
Good to know.
The weather changes quickly in Iceland, so don't be caught unawares. It is always better to bring a sweater or dress in layers which you can remove if you are too warm. (Jeans are not recommended because denim, once wet, will spread moisture and take a long time to dry, leaving the wearer extremely cold!)

Breathtaking Breiðafjörður beauty
Breiðafjörður is a nature reserve and bay between the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords in West Iceland. The mountains at the northern side of the bay’s entrance are some of the oldest in the country, formed 15 million years ago. Fifty birds nest on the islands, including the common shag, the black guillemot, the brent goose, and puffins. Many of these species can only be seen from May to September. It is often possible to see a variety of marine mammals in the bay. The grey and harbor seals are most common, which can be seen swimming and hauling out on the rocks. It should be noted that Breiðafjörður is one of the best parts of the country to see orcas from the shore, although they are still uncommon.

Viking sushi boat trip
Considered one of Iceland’s most scenic fjords, Breiðafjörður on the west coast is encircled by mountains and dotted with over 3,000 islands, islets and skerries. This relaxed boat trip is a great way to see the mountains and islands around Stykkishólmur and offers a chance to sample some of the freshest seafood in the country. Spend your time motoring between islands and sea cliffs teeming with nesting birds, feast on Icelandic sushi and learn about local legends and geology along the way. This two- to three-hour boat trip offers a great introduction to the area as well as panoramic views.
The tour begins at the Seatours office in Stykkishólmur port, where the staff can check you in and direct you to your boat. You should arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour departs.
Leaving behind the brightly painted houses of Stykkishólmur, motor out into Breiðafjörður, which is bordered on one side by the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and by the Westfjords on the other. Local legend has it that there are only two things that cannot be counted: the stars in the sky and the number of islands in the bay.
Spend a couple of hours journeying between islands, each of which is home to a variety of birdlife. Over 50 species make their home around the bay and you’re likely to see razorbills, European shags, cormorants, kittiwakes and, during the summer months, puffins. You may even see white-tailed eagles soaring overhead.
The boat can get fairly close to the cliffs to allow you to observe these birds at close quarters. Many of the islands also have interesting rock formations or local legends attached to them, which your captain will relate along the way.
Halfway through your boat journey, the crew drop the fishing nets and trawl the ocean floor. Hauling up the nets, they’ll spread a vividly hued collection of seafood across a table at the back of the boat, and expertly sift through taking out various edible delicacies. They’ll prepare the ‘Viking sushi’ and let you taste it straight from the shell with seasonings of wasabi paste, ginger and soy sauce if you prefer.
The boat has a large open deck as well as an indoor space downstairs in case of bad weather. There is a bar (infrequently manned) in the indoor lounge, which offers complimentary self-service tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
After a couple of hours exploring the bay and soaking up the mountain scenery, return to Stykkishólmur.
