Your next golf trip to Ireland: Why you should consider these 15 hidden gems

visit ireland golf

We’re hearing you better act quick if you plan to travel overseas. Many of the most popular destinations for international travelers are booking up for 2022—and some even for 2023. Golf in Ireland is back after restrictions limited travel for much of the past two years.

Though you likely have courses like Ballybunion Old (No. 17 on Golf Digest’s most recent World 100 ranking) and Royal County Down in Northern Ireland (No. 1 on ours and most World 100 lists) in your sights, we’re here to point you to some hidden gems worth trying to get to. Perhaps these courses will have more availability in the next year or two … even more reason to head there.

With help from our friends at Golfbreaks by PGA TOUR , they helped us identify these hidden gems in Ireland.

Dublin/East :

Mixing some sightseeing and golf in and around Dublin is a trip we don’t need to sell you on. It’s a trip any golfer needs to do once in their life. And if you’re planning to do it in the next year or two, we’re here to help.

County Louth, Baltray, Co. Louth

Couty Louth GC #14

Laurence C Lambrecht

Other Irish gems get more fanfare, but it’s possible County Louth (above) is the best course in Ireland you don’t know about. Ranked in the top 100 of Golf Digest’s “Best Courses Outside the United States” in years past, County Louth ranked sixth in our most recent Best in Ireland list . Tom Simpson worked on an existing layout back in 1938 to create the fabulous links you can play today. Shane Lowry won the Irish Open as an amateur here back in 2009.

Royal Dublin Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/royal-dublin-10th-hole.jpg

Harry S. Colt repaired and revamped Dublin’s oldest course after the grounds served as a musket training site during World War I. Martin Hawtree did some work to the gentle, mostly flat but rolling land in the early 2000s.

Portmarnock Hotel & G. Links

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/Portmarnock_11A.jpg

Located on the original Jameson estate, the Portmarnock Hotel & G. Links is a relatively new, Bernard Langer-designed resort layout that sits on the Irish Sea. It ranked 13th on Golf Digest’s most recent Best in Ireland rankings.

For trip planning purposes, these courses are all proper to pair with the above:

Portmarnock (Old)

The European Club

South West Ireland

One of Ireland’s most naturally beautiful regions is the South West, with its rugged outcroppings and rolling topography. That makes the golf in the area so, so good—and though many of the courses are on your radar already, we’re here to tell you about a few others.

Dooks Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/Dooks 5.jpg

"STEVE CARR GOLF"

A stunning, rolling piece of natural dunesland can be found at Dooks Golf Club, 35 minutes from Killarney. The club was founded in 1889, making it one of the country’s oldest—but Martin Hawtree came in and renovated the course in 2006, securing it as being a must-add to your trip to the area.

Dingle Golf Links

Locals refer to it as Ceann Sibeal as the links sits right on the end of the Dingle Peninsula with incredible views of Dingle Bay and the mountainous Blasket Islands. You’ll have to drive a little out of your way to get to Dingle Golf Links, but you’ll find an open, links layout that feels like it’s been around for hundreds of years—though it was only built in the 1970s.

Like we said, the golf in this region needs no introduction. Trips to Killarney, Shannon and Cork should all include:

Ballybunion

Adare Manor

North West Ireland

Perhaps Ireland’s most underrated region for golf, the Emerald Isle’s dramatic northwest coast is home to numerous hidden gems that stand up with the country’s best.

Enniscrone Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/Enniscrone Sunset 1-8.jpg

Enniscrone boasts 27 links holes perched on a peninsula on the Wild Atlantic Way. Towering dunes line many holes and create a stunning setting on the aptly named Dunes course, which features dramatic undulations and scenic vistas.

Carne Golf Links

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/CarneMay2018-101.jpg

Hardly any land was moved in creating Carne, resulting in tees and greens nestled among the dramatic sand-covered dunes that resemble the lunar landscape. A third nine was built in 2013 on the most dramatic part of the property and is incorporated into the original design on every second day.

Donegal Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/DonegalSept2017-9.jpg

Situated on the tip of Murvagh peninsula, Donegal draws comparisons to Muirfield for its distinctive layout that runs in two large loops. Unlike many courses along Ireland’s rugged northwest coast, Donegal is relatively flat and presents subtle undulations and strategic bunkering.

County Sligo Golf Club

The 27 holes at County Sligo offer intriguing variety with dramatic elevation changes, forced carries and meandering burns. Several elevated tees provide scenic panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding mountains.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Links

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/New 14th Green, 15th Hole & 16th Tee.JPG

Gil Hanse and his design partner Jim Wagner recently renovated this rustic layout, bringing to life the natural features that make this seaside links compelling. The revitalized Narin & Portnoo offers a blend of tight doglegs and generous fairways, with soaring dunes, raised greens and natural bunkering present throughout.

Rosapenna Golf Resort

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/St Patrick's Links - Hole 2 - 1 - August 11, 2020.jpg

Three hidden gems await at Rosapenna , located in the very north of Ireland, including the Old Tom Morris Links (designed by its namesake in 1893) and the Tom Doak-designed St. Patrick’s Links, which opened in 2021.

Ballyliffin Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/Balliliffin May 2019 HR-61.jpg

Ballyliffin is Ireland’s northernmost golf club and, with two championship links courses, is widely regarded as the country’s finest 36-hole facility. The Glashedy Links , the younger (and longer) of the two courses, hosted the 2018 Irish Open, won by Scotland’s Russell Knox.

Strandhill Golf Club

Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Knocknarea Mountain with views of both, Strandhill plays just 6,350 yards from the tips but challenges golfers with imposing dunes and intriguing green complexes.

Northern Ireland

Anytime Golf Digest does a survey of bucket-list destinations, Northern Ireland is near the top of the list. And for good reason: The stunning visuals and topography (in addition to other sights to see, ala touring the Game of Thrones sites) create dramatic golf that competes with the best in the world.

In fact, the actual best course in the world, Royal County Down , can be found here. Though it’s private, travelers can inquire about getting on— click here for more information.

Of course, you must also attempt to play Royal Portrush ’s Dunluce course , which was eighth in our latest World 100 Greatest rankings, and hosted the 2019 Open Championship after the game’s oldest championship returned to Northern Ireland for the first time in 68 years. Don’t forget the Valley course as well.

Here are the other courses we’d build around:

Castlerock Golf Club (below), ranked fourth on Golf Digest’s most recent Best in Northern Ireland rankings , was altered by Harry Colt in the 1920s, cementing its places among the best links courses in the land.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/Castlerock 2019 LR-7.jpg

Ardglass Golf Club is just down the road from Royal County Down, making it the perfect complementary loop. The back nine is splendid, all along the water with some dramatic topography. Take a breeze through the clubhouse, believed to be the oldest in the world, with part of the building dating back to 1405.

Portstewart would not make any ‘hidden gems’ list among avid architecture fans, but it can get lost in the shuffle with the amazing golf in Ireland. Ranked on Golf Digest’s most recent World 100 rankings, the Strand course .

We’ll let Golf Digest equipment editor Mike Stachura, as avid of a travel/design buff as you’ll find, describe the setting: “The first tee at the Strand is set on high dunes, like you’re surveying the kingdom, with beach and waves down to your right and all of County Antrim in front. It’s no wonder the television series 'Game of Thrones' has used the nearby land as scene-stealers.”

Thus why Northern Ireland sits at the top of nearly every traveling golfer’s bucket list.

No matter what your skill level is, you’ll find courses for all abilities and interests. Plus, many clubs are open all year round so you can enjoy them any time you decide to travel.

Ireland golf trips are incredibly special. Although it’s not the birthplace of golf, it’s held in high regard here, with many people still claiming that golf is in the blood of the Irish. The country is steeped in rich golfing history, with play here dating back to the mid-19th century. Ireland has also previously hosted the Solheim Cup , The Open , and the prestigious Ryder Cup in 2006.

The Open Championship 2025 will be held at the prestigious Royal Portrush , which is still the only club outside of mainland Britain to host the exciting tournament.

The Ryder Cup 2027 will also be held at Adare Manor, which won Golf Resort of the Year in the 2022 International Association of Golf Tour Operators Awards. Tournaments aside, Ireland itself has previously won Golf Destination of the Year in these highly-respected awards.

Part of the reason why golfing in Ireland offers a different experience from elsewhere in the world is the close proximity of courses. Many of Ireland’s golf courses are positioned close together, meaning our Ireland golf tours offer plenty of play and minimal travel.

For an optimal experience, booking in the summer months means that the nights draw in later so you can enjoy time on the course up to 9pm most days.

Ireland Golf Reviews

Thank you for making it happen.

We loved ALL the courses. Adding St Patrick’s was really special. So glad Bill Hogan suggested it.

Adare was our least favorite, but everyone agreed it was ideal for the day we got off the plane to practice for the tournament we ran on the final four courses. Everyone’s favorite was Royal County Down (and mi ne especially because I had 3 birdies including the 18th!).

Drumshanbo was a huge hit. The Shed Distillery tour was fun, and we got a kick out of how everyone in the town knew about our helicopter within an hour. .

Wonderful Trip & Service

Thank you for all your guidance and help on our tour of Ireland. Allan O’Connor’s service – quick response and dealing with whatever we threw at him with a smile is really what made this trip so great.

Ireland is a beautiful country and I cannot wait to return on another trip with Premier Golf.

Thank you so much again for all you have done to make this dream of ours a reality.

Thank You Premier

Northern Ireland was a blast. We were there with the Davidson group and the hotels Bushmills and Slieve Donard were very nice. Our driver was a true gentlemen and took great care of us. Royal Portrush and Royal County Down were our favorite courses, and Ardglass and Ballyliffin were great surprises. I’m so glad we had a driver because after golf we had some of the local Bushmills product each day in the golf clubhouses. 🙂 Next time we will spend more time in Belfast, there is so much to do there. Our half-day tour was not enough, but overall the trip was superb. Thanks to Bill and Matthew and Allan for all the hard work.

Better than advertised!

We worked with your company and Bill Hogan set up the trip. When we got to Ireland Allan had everything perfect, and we wish we could have stayed longer. Kinsale was a nice town to start, and Killarney was our base for five nights to play the courses around that area. Loved Ballybunion and Waterville , they are spectacular. Our last round was at Lahinch and that might have been he best course of the bunch. Thank you to the team at Premier for the great time. We’ll be back!

Ireland Golf FAQs

It is estimated that there are more than 400 golf courses in Ireland, including both 9 and 18-hole courses. For a country its size, Ireland has a lot of golf courses. Three of Ireland’s most prestigious courses are Royal County Down , Royal Portrush , and Portmarnock .

The oldest golf course in Ireland is The Royal Curragh Golf Club, located in the heathland of the Curragh in County Kildare. There are records of a match being played there as early as 1852. Other old courses in the country include Royal Belfast (1881) & Royal Dublin (1885).

There are four key regions for golf in Ireland, each with its own charms and unique offers:

  • Northern Ireland and the North Coast – Visit the home of some of the most challenging and famous links courses, including Royal County Down, Portstewart, Castlerock, Ballyliffin, and Royal Portrush.
  • Southwest Ireland – Find the highest concentration of world-ranked courses like Ballybunion, Waterville, Lahinch, Old Head, and Tralee here.
  • Dublin and East Ireland – Get a mixture of sights and golf in the capital, with fantastic links courses such as the European Club, The Island and Portmarnock, and parkland courses including The K Club.
  • Northwest Ireland – Discover hidden gems and undiscovered courses, including natural and rugged links like Donegal, Enniscrone, Carne, and St Patrick’s Links at Rosapenna.

These are just some of the key regions for golf in Ireland, but given the sheer number of golf courses here, you’re sure to find more places to play on your trip.

The best time for an Ireland golf trip is subjective for most people and depends on budget, preferred weather, interests, and availability. Generally, however, the golf travel season in Ireland is from April to October when the weather is favorable, and courses are in peak condition.

To avoid the crowds, the shoulder months of April and October offer greater value, but you must pack warmly and prepare for wind and rain. We recommend May and September, a month after the season begins and a month before the season ends, respectively, to ensure better weather and fewer crowds.

The cost to play golf in Ireland varies depending on the season, currency, course, package, etc. Generally, playing in the off-season or either side of the peak season costs less. Northern Ireland golf packages can cost more than similar tours in other parts of Ireland, and it’s worth noting that Northern Ireland uses the British Pound and not the Euro.

The courses you choose on your Ireland golf trip will also affect the rates, with the most prestigious resorts commanding higher prices.

At Premier Golf, we offer 6-night, 6-round packages that start at $3,900 per golfer.

There are plenty of stay-and-play golf packages available all over Ireland. The best stay-and-play options for you will depend on what type of experience you’re looking for. Factors to consider include availability, weather, preferred courses, and budget.

To offer an expansive and full experience, we have 4 recommended stay-and-play packages in Ireland; Northern Ireland , The South West , Dublin & East Ireland , and The North West . Each golf tour allows you to sample entire regions for a complete and well-rounded experience.

Like many things, the best courses in Ireland will be subjective. However, based on sources that provide rankings of golf courses in Ireland, the courses considered the best by golfing enthusiasts, pros, and architects include Royal Portrush , Royal County Down , Ballybunion , Lahinch , Rosapenna & Portmarnock .

There are several ways to book a golf tour in Ireland, depending on your preferences and budget.

The easiest option is to book via a travel agency. Ireland golf packages are designed to include almost everything you will need on a golfing trip here. For instance, Premier Golf specializes in luxury golf tours to Ireland, with a team based in Killarney that will take care of everything for you.

You could also book a trip yourself via online platforms, booking travel and accommodation separately. You’ll need to check tee times and act as a one-person golf tour agency in this case. This option is a little higher risk as certain courses have restrictions and requirements, such as the need for a caddie.

A final option is to book via a local golf resort or club, where stay-and-play packages include accommodation and golfing among other amenities.

Depending on which option you choose, your experience will vary.

Several major golf tournaments have been played in Ireland over the years. The most prestigious golf tournament to be held here is the Open Championship, which is one of the four major championships in professional golf. The 153rd edition of the Open Championship is scheduled to take place in 2025 at the iconic Royal Portrush Golf Club .

In addition, the 2027 Ryder Cup will be held at Adare Manor , having previously been played at the K Club in 2006.

Frequently asked questions

The south west.

The South West Region of Ireland has earned its reputation as one of the world’s top three golf destinations (as nominated by the Golf Channel).

Home to iconic courses like Tralee Golf Club, Lahinch Golf Club, Ballybunion, Waterville Golf Links, Old Head Golf Links, Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg, this region is a golfer’s dream.

Serviced internationally by two airports, Shannon and Cork, the South West is also Ireland’s most popular tourist destination outside of Dublin.

Beyond golf, the South West offers a blend of links and parkland courses, excellent accommodation, welcoming pubs and the friendliest people known to mankind.

A golf vacation here is not just a sporting adventure but a deeply emotional and spiritual journey that will leave lasting memories.

The North West

The North West Region is an unexplored gem, gaining popularity thanks to its inclusion in the Wild Atlantic Way (WAW).

This coastal route stretches over 2,600km (1,600 miles), offering breath-taking views. Golfers are treated to some of Ireland’s most striking links courses, each presenting its own unique challenges.

The great links courses here are Connemara, Carne, Enniscrone, Co Sligo, Donegal, Nairn and Portnoo, Rosapenna, Portsalon and Ballyliffin. Don’t miss Galway Bay Golf Resort, a must-play course in this captivating landscape.

The region also features other notable courses like Ardglass, Castlerock and Portstewart (host to the Irish Open in 2017), while Belfast offers pristine parkland courses in Malone and Royal Belfast.

Beyond golf, explore what Northern Ireland has to offer. To learn more about Belfast’s rich history, visit the Titanic Experience and enjoy a tour of Bushmills Whiskey Distillery and the Giant’s Causeway.

Dublin and South East

The Dublin and South East region seamlessly combines top-class links and parkland courses with the vibrant city life of Ireland’s capital.

Located on the East coast of Ireland in what is now part of Ireland’s Ancient East, Golfers coming to this region can enjoy golf on a fantastic combination of links and parkland courses close to Ireland’s capital city. These include Portmarnock Golf Club, County Louth Baltray, The Island Golf Club, Royal Dublin, Druids Glen, The European Club, The K Club and Carton House.

This region also boasts famous attractions such as the Guinness Storehouse, Jameson Whiskey Distillery and Trinity College Dublin.

Golfers can create a complete golfing package in Dublin or combine it with a South West golfing tour, taking advantage of Ireland’s main airport for convenient access to the entire golf country.

Whether you’re chasing the thrill of an exceptional championship courses, the allure of links golf, or the scenic beauty of Ireland’s coastlines, these golf regions offer an array of experiences for every golfer.

When planning a golf trip to Ireland, timing is crucial to ensure an optimal experience.

Ireland, renowned for its lush green landscapes and world class courses, offers different seasons, each with its unique appeal.

Peak season (May – September): The best time for a golf trip to Ireland is during the peak season, which runs from May to September.

This period offers the most favourable weather conditions, with milder temperatures, longer daylight hours and minimal rainfall.

Golfers can expect lush, well-maintained courses and a vibrant atmosphere. However, popularity comes at a price – booking tee times well in advance is advisable due to high demand.

Be prepared for higher prices during this peak period.

Shoulder season (March, April & October): If you prefer a quieter golfing experience with lower costs, consider visiting during the shoulder season.

March, April and October offer more availability on the golf courses and reduced green fees.

While the weather may be slightly less predictable, Ireland’s charming landscapes are still a treat for golf enthusiasts during these months.

In summary, the best time to play golf in Ireland depends on your preferences.

Opt for peak season for ideal weather and a bustling golf scene, or choose the shoulder season for a more affordable and tranquil golfing experience.

Regardless of when you visit, Ireland’s golf courses promise breathtaking views and exceptional play opportunities.

If you’re planning a golf trip to Ireland, you might be wondering, “What’s the weather like in Ireland?” Well, the answer can be summed up in one word: unpredictable!

Ireland is known for its beautiful but ever-changing weather and it’s a topic of humour among locals.

To keep an eye on the current weather conditions and be prepared for Ireland’s famously fickle climate, you can check out this Irish golf course weather site .

We advise all our clients to be prepared for rain, hail and sunshine during your golf trip. As the saying goes, in Ireland, you can experience all four seasons in a single day!

Pack your rain gear, multiple layers and a sense of humour and get ready to enjoy not only the golf courses but also the famous Irish craic – a warm and friendly atmosphere that makes any weather feel like golfing heaven.

Golf etiquette in Ireland

Golf etiquette in Ireland is deeply rooted in the sport’s traditions and values, aiming to create an enjoyable experience for all while upholding the integrity of the game.

Understanding and adhering to these guidelines is essential for every golfer.

  • Dress code: To maintain decorum and respect for fellow golfers, a dress code must be followed. Collarless or sleeveless shirts, T-shirts, football or rugby-style shirts and track-suit or jogging bottoms are generally considered inappropriate. Denim trousers or shorts with ragged ends are also discouraged. Choose rounded or crew neck golf shirts and tailored shorts.
  • Respect : Central to golf etiquette is the concept of respect. This applies to the course, fellow players and the game itself. Show respect by repairing pitch-marks, replacing divots and raking bunkers. Be polite and avoid distracting fellow players.
  • Safety : Prioritise safety by ensuring no one is in the line of your swing or shot. Do not play until players ahead are out of range. Pay attention to green-staff and shout ‘fore’ if needed. Discontinue play in the event of lightning.
  • Speed of play : Keep pace with the group in front of you to avoid delays. If you’re slower, invite faster groups to play through. Use provisional balls when necessary and don’t search for lost balls excessively.
  • Mobile phone policy : On the course, use mobile phones only for emergencies. In the clubhouse, relocate to the lobby or balcony for calls.

By following these guidelines, you’ll not only enhance your own golfing experience in Ireland but also contribute to the enjoyment of the sport for others.

When embarking on a golf trip to the picturesque greens of Ireland, ensuring you have the right gear and equipment is essential for an enjoyable and comfortable golfing experience.

Here’s a comprehensive guide on what to pack and know about your golf equipment in Ireland:

Golf clubs: Shipping your own clubs is ideal if you’re particular about your equipment. However, if travelling light is your preference, rest assured that many golf courses in Ireland offer rental clubs of various brands and types. We can liaise with your chosen golf courses to confirm availability and make reservations if needed.

Golf balls and tees: Stock up on your preferred golf balls and tees. Ireland’s lush courses may require extra balls, especially if you’re exploring challenging links.

Golf shoes : Comfortable, waterproof golf shoes are a must, as Ireland’s weather can be unpredictable. Ensure they are broken in to prevent discomfort during your rounds.

Golf rain gear in Ireland

Ireland is known for its occasional showers, so investing in high-quality, waterproof golf rain gear is prudent.

This should include a waterproof jacket, pants and a cap to keep you dry and comfortable during your rounds.

Pack a variety of golf-appropriate clothing. Given the potentially changeable weather, layering is key. Include moisture-wicking shirts, sweaters, windproof jackets and breathable, waterproof rain gear.

Ready for an Irish golf adventure? Contact SWING Golf to start planning your trip today. We are your trusted golf tour operators, with over 40 years of experience.

Off course activities

Beyond its world-class golf courses, Ireland offers a wealth of sightseeing and tourist activities to enhance your visit.

Explore the vibrant cities of Dublin, Belfast and Cork, known for their rich history, culture and lively pub scenes.

Immerse yourself in Ireland’s stunning natural beauty by hiking in the rugged landscapes of the Ring of Kerry or the Cliffs of Moher. Delve into the country’s folklore with visits to ancient castles, such as Blarney Castle and mythical sites like the Giant’s Causeway.

For those seeking relaxation, indulge in a leisurely afternoon at a traditional Irish spa or enjoy a scenic drive along the Wild Atlantic Way .

Ireland’s off-course experiences are as diverse as its golf courses, ensuring an unforgettable journey for all visitors.

Tips for playing golf in Ireland (from our experts)

  • Plan well in advance. The norm now is one to two years in advance of arrival
  • The playing season extends from April to October, but golf in Ireland can be played all year round, weather and course conditions permitting. September is the busiest month and July is the quietest month
  • Book the golf courses first. Accommodation, transport and other activities can then be added
  • Bookings can be made for between one person and 100 people (subject to availability)
  • The average golf tour includes seven to eight nights and six to seven rounds of golf but more or fewer can be arranged
  • Transport can be self-drive or chauffer-driven vehicles. Groups over four nearly always take a chauffer-driven coach
  • Don’t try to overdo it. Ireland has at least 5 recognizable golf regions e.g. South West, North East. Play one region and save on logistics and give yourself a reason to come back again!
  • The links courses especially can be demanding, and some are walking courses only so 18 holes per day is the norm
  • Caddies will add to your playing experiences and it’s best to request in advance
  • Caddies can be a forecaddie, carry a single bag or a double bag
  • Limited carts (buggies) are available at many courses but will need to be booked in advance
  • Prepare for all weather types and yes, you should bring your wet suit along with layers to allow you to add or remove as you please
  • Bring soft-shell bags to allow for ease of handling for chauffer-driven coaches and for additional room if you choose a self-drive rental.
  • Cash for gratuities should be either Euro (€) for Ireland or Sterling (£) for Northern Ireland
  • Debit and credit cards can be used at all facilities
  • Liaise expeditiously with your tour operator for a smooth booking process

Where are the best golf courses in Ireland?

This question is very difficult to answer! At SWING Golf, we are proud of the international respect that our south west golf courses command, but there are fantastic golf courses all around the country.

It depends on the type of golf trip you’d like to experience. Tell us what you’re looking for and we’ll recommend the best courses for you.

What happens if it rains and I can’t play golf? Tee times missed due to weather are handled on an individual basis by each course and are not the responsibility of SWING.

In most cases the course will work to reschedule your round. If rescheduling is not possible, only the course has the discretion to authorise a refund.

Please send the course authorisation to SWING for processing. Tee times missed for any other reason is the sole responsibility of the individual and not the golf club or SWING.

Any refunds will incur administration charges.

Do golf clubs in Ireland close in winter? Most of our clubs stay open during the winter period, weather permitting of course.

Green fees are at significantly reduced prices due to the quality of the courses declining and less-desirable weather.

Links courses usually use mats during the winter period to protect the courses and many of the top-line links courses are closed to visitors during the winter months.

Can you ensure that we get good weather? Unfortunately, we cannot make promises that we cannot keep, it is Ireland after all. Fingers crossed!

What’s the best day of the week to play golf? The best time to play golf in Ireland is during the week. A lot of our courses are member clubs so availability is limited at the weekend. Courses such as Ballybunion do not allow any visitors on Saturday or Sunday. Prices also tend to be higher at the weekend.

Can we bring non-golfers with our group? Yes, we welcome all non-golfers and we can organise sightseeing activities, accommodation, transport and more.

Can I play 36 holes in one day?

Yes, we have many golfers who play 36 holes in one day and will be able to avail of a discounted rate for the second round in most courses. In Ireland, during the summer, daylight lingers well into the evening, especially in mid-June, with twilight lasting until around 11 pm or even later, making it perfect for a full day of golf.

Can we organise extra rounds of golf “on the day” during our trip? We can organise extra rounds of golf on the day but this is fully subject to availability. During the summer months, availability can be extremely limited at popular golf courses but we will do what we can to assist.

How many golf courses are in Ireland? There are approximately 350 18-hole golf courses in Ireland. Along with 9-hole courses, the total breaks the 400 mark which is very substantial for a country the size of Ireland. Have you heard about the guy who has played them all?

Do I require a handicap certificate in Ireland? You do not require a handicap certificate of any kind in Ireland. For some of the top links & parkland courses, it is recommended that you have a handicap of 18 or less for men and 28 or less for women to get the most enjoyment out of playing.

Can I book golf lessons while on my trip? We can book you golf lessons with PGA professionals while on your trip for either individual / group lessons or specific golf clinics (subject to availability).

In addition to hosting the Irish Open, Mount Juliet has hosted the World Golf Championship twice; which saw Tiger Woods set a tournament record of 25 under-par. Other tournament venues include the Heritage Golf Resort & Druids Glen Golf Resort , both hosting the Seve Trophy.

The K Club's Palmer course hosted the 2006 Ryder Cup. Darren Clarke produced a courageous performance inspiring Europe to a 18.5 to 9.5 victory. Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland remains the only Irish venue to have hosted the Open Championship.

Druids Glen is home to two parkland gems, one of which is ranked among the best inland courses in the country, and a top class hotel that serves as the perfect base for tour of Dublin or simply a top value weekend trip with a group. Carton House is a similar prospect, with two vastly different courses (always a winner with societies) located within 40 minutes from Dublin.

One of the real hidden gems of the Emerald Isle is the unheralded Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Links . Situated on the north west coast, these two outstanding links courses are simply spectacular. Eamonn/Sarah,   Thanks for organizing our group of 8 for a golfing memory of a lifetime!  Each one of the 7 courses we played in SW Ireland were stunning and surpassed our expectations.  Thank you Sarah for the excellent hotels in the perfect location and for knowing the hotel staff would put out a fantastic Irish breakfast at 5:00am for those early morning tee times. Your attention to detail was second to none!  A special bonus of getting us Pat as a driver who shared his extensive knowledge of Ireland as we traveled through your beautiful country along with his quick Irish wit!   It's a trip we will all never forget!   Slainte,   Jim Holihan NY (USA) September 2023
Good morning Eamonn,   Greg and I can't thank you enough for organizing and overseeing our fantastic trip to your wonderful country.   It was truly great from start to finish. Our driver Tommy took good care of us.  We all had quite a few laughs together. We thoroughly enjoyed the golf courses, even though we could have done with one Irish weather experience - I may be the only guy ever to say that ! Thanks again for everything.  I will surely recommend you and hope that I can make a return trip in the near future.  Stay well and Slainte, Eamonn. Jim and Greg  NJ, USA September 2023
Hi Elaine, Thank you so much for the wonderful vacation that you arranged for our family.  The accommodations at the three hotels were fantastic.  Adare Manor is truly magical.  The guys thoroughly enjoyed their golf adventures.  The sunshine for their last round at Adare was the perfect ending. Nigel was terrific!  Not only did he drive us everywhere we needed to go, but he was an expert at by-passing the entrance lines and getting us right in to any attraction.  We could not have had a better host.  Please pass along our thanks again.  The other drivers were all great as well. It was not an easy task to accommodate three generations, golfers and non-golfers, but you succeeded well.  We look forward to our Scotland adventure next summer! Best regards,   Bill, Sandi and family,   July 2023
Elaine - Our group had an outstanding time in Ireland and much of that has to do with your fantastic planning and organization.  We all had high expectations for this trip and those lofty expectations were exceeded. Ireland is a beautiful country and the people are so welcoming.  The hotel accommodations were excellent and the overall itinerary was perfect.  All of us were very impressed with how smooth everything went .. from hotel check in, golf reservations, driver pickups etc.  Absolutely no glitches anywhere on the trip.  The golf was an unforgettable experience.  All the courses were top notch and exactly what we were hoping to experience in Ireland.  Finally, our driver Con.  He made the trip.  Con is such a warm, friendly gentlemen with a wonderful personality.  We loved hearing him talk about his beloved country and share his knowledge on social and political climate in Ireland.   S Barker USA June 2023
Elaine, Thank you for putting together an amazing 8 day trip for our gang of golfing misfits. You did an incredible job of coordinating the arrival/departure and other random requests from the guys in compiling a world class itinerary. The accommodations, courses and meal suggestions were all terrific. We were blessed by amazing weather which turned our great trip into an epic one. Special shout out to our driver Con who did an incredible job of cat herding, all the while entertaining, the boys with history lessons and amusing anecdotes. We would not hesitate to recommend you both to anyone seeking the golf trip of a lifetime. Cheers Greg. Greg Swart, California, May 23
Michael:   Thanks so much. The trip was perfect. Seriously, I can hardly imagine it being better. Thank you so much again for your assistance. I had a great time.    All the best, Michael R. USA May 2023
Elaine…..Almost home for a week now but still glowing over the experience.  Everyone had a great time and gave me all the credit.  I did inform them that though I spent much more time working on this adventure than I ever thought I would, it was you who made it work so well.  Tim was also just terrific.  He was extremely easy to work with and kept us informed of the schedule of pick-ups and drop offs so that all went very smoothly.  We had a smattering of rain one day at Dooks and played in a windstorm at Waterville but all else was good.   Thanks again, Steve Angel USA - May 2023

Phil & Robyn Gleadhill. (Australia)

Hi Elaine, We truly couldn't have asked for better. Everything went so well. We were so blessed with the weather. We only needed our wet weather gear for about 3 holes at Enniscrone, and for most of our final round at Ardglass. All the rest of the golf was dry and mostly sunny, and not overly windy either. Our sightseeing days were similarly blessed, and we packed a lot of things in, including some significant walks and hikes as well as some of the attractions you suggested. The accommodation was all very good and varied so every stay was a little different.  The included breakfasts were a real winner.  We covered about 3,500 KM all up. Quite a drive. Highly recommended and a first-class job done - thank you! Regards,

Phil & Robyn Gleadhill. (Australia)

Susan and Brian (USA)

Dear Elaine, We wanted to thank all those involved at Golf Vacations Ireland for organizing our recent trip. It was a 2.5 year wait and well worth it. The accommodations, restaurants , driver and most importantly the golf were all wonderful! We were glad to have 2.5 years more of practice so we were not totally embarrassed on those amazing golf courses. Surely we gave the caddies lots of stories to tell to their peers. Thank you for sticking with us over the pandemic and for all your assistance and accommodations made during that time. We hope we will be back and will definitely be referring you to our friends and family! Thanks again and take care,

Susan and Brian (USA)

Gregory Comfort (USA)

Eamonn- We had a fantastic time on our trip. One very interesting day of weather at Waterville, but overall it was just an absolutely awesome trip. Finishing on royal county down was a great way to end the trip. Thank you for helping to arrange everything. Otherwise, I just wanted to say thank you, and we will plan on using you again if we are lucky enough to make a trip back in the future.

Gregory Comfort (USA)

Dean Robertson (GA, USA)

Eamonn/Elaine, I just wanted to drop a note to tell you what a great time we had. After 2 years or so we were finally able to get to Ireland to play some great golf courses. The people were friendly, the courses were magnificent, the pubs were warm, the Guinness was cold and plentiful, and even the weather was perfect. Even with all of this it still does not compare to how great Donal was. He was knowledgeable, kind, and very accommodating. He took great care of us and we in turn took great care of him. I would highly recommend him for any type of group you may host in the future. I will be sure to leave a five-star recommendation for golf vacations Ireland as well. Thank you for your patience.

Dean Robertson (GA, USA)

David and Susan (USA)

Hi Eamonn and Elaine, We just returned to the States tonight from our magnificent trip to Ireland. We had a fantastic time. All the arrangements went smoothly and worked perfectly. The hotels were great, the golf courses were incredible. Sean did a great job driving and being the tour guide. And we were particularly impressed with how you both arranged such perfect weather for us. Seriously, the trip was just fantastic and the planning that you both did for us was great. We particularly enjoyed the Merrion Hotel in Dublin and the Killarney Park Hotels. And the trip to the Cliffs of Moher on the 1st day worked out very well. The Kilmainham Gaol tour was very enlightening and very well worth it. We also really liked the Jameson tour. Thank you again for planning such a great tour!

Thanks again for everything John
