At taronga zoo, you have the option of having a koala encounter for an additional $24.95 aud at the time of writing. groups of up to four are led by taronga's zookeepers where you can pose for pictures with a cuddly australian koala for about five minutes.  don't get tempted to actually cuddle the koalas though. visitors are not allowed to touch/hold koalas at zoos and wildlife parks in new south wales.  while the encounter will get you the closest to taronga zoo's koalas, you can still see and get photos of the koalas without paying the extra fee. given the limited amount of time that you get to spend with the koalas, $25 aud is a pretty steep price. , farmyard creatures with an elvis haircut at taronga zoo.

Visiting Taronga Zoo In Sydney – A Complete Guide

Taronga Zoo in Sydney is one of the top tourist spots in the city. Officially opened in 1916, this particular zoo has quickly become one of the most famous zoological parks in the world.

In this guide, I have included useful information on how to get here, how much it costs, and what to expect when you arrive at the zoo.

WHERE IS TARONGA ZOO   & HOW TO GET HERE

Taronga Zoo is located in the suburb of Mosman, on the north side of Sydney Harbour.

If you’re already over on the north side of the harbor bridge, you can easily catch buses and taxis to the zoo.

Equally, if you’re close enough you can take the walking trail along the coast and into the zoo.

If you’re in the central city, then getting to the zoo is pretty simple. Simply board one of the ferries at Circular Quay and take the peaceful, relaxing ride over to the Zoo.

Taronga Zoo has its own ferry wharf, making it super simple to access the zoo.

TARONGA ZOO PRICES

An adult ticket to Taronga Zoo will cost you around $47 AUD and a child ticket will be around $37 AUD.

WHAT TO EXPECT

If you have the time, I honestly would set aside the best part of an entire day to explore the zoo. From gorillas to seals and everything else in between, you’ll never be left wanting more from Taronga Zoo.

From the entrance, the very first exhibition you’ll see is the most iconic animal in Australia, the Koala bears.

From here you’ll pick up a map of the zoo and make your way around each and every exhibition, making sure you check out what time the shows, feeding times, and animal talks are on.

You don’t need to take a printout – on the day of your visit, show the tickets in your email and walk in.

In case of a last-minute change of plans, you can cancel them up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.

This is the most value-for-money Taronga Zoo ticket.

You start this tour from one of these three locations – Darling Harbour , Circular Quay , or Manly .

You get on to the Rocket Ferry operated by Captain Cook Cruises and travel to Taronga Zoo; on the way, enjoy stunning views of the Sydney Harbour, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, etc.

This ticket gets you access to all Zones at the Taronga Zoo, including the Sky Safari cable car.

Taronga Zoo is on Bradleys Head Road in Mosman, on Sydney Harbour. Get Directions .

It is close to Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD), and there are various ways to get to Taronga Zoo.

Taronga Zoo Ferry

If you prefer a ferry to reach Taronga Zoo, board one from  Circular Quay ,  Darling Harbour , or  Manly .

The traveling time is around 12 minutes.

From Circular Quay, you can also get on board one of Captain Cook Cruises’ Zoo Express boats.

All you have to do is buy a Sydney Harbour Cruise + Taronga Zoo ticket , and get the transport both ways.

You can board the M30 metro bus outside Central , Town Hall , or Wynyard Train Stations every 10-15 minutes.

If you are trying to reach the Taronga Zoo via the Northern suburb bus routes, get down at either Spit Junction or Mosman Junction and board the M30 bus.

If you are coming from Balmoral Beach, pick bus route number 238 to get dropped off at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo main entrance.

If you are trying to reach the Zoo by train, get down at the Circular Quay train station and get a ferry.

Taronga Zoo parking

Taronga Zoo Sydney’s full-day parking costs 18 AUD.

The entrance to this parking zone is on Bradleys Head Road.

The best time to visit Taronga Zoo is when they open at 9.30 am.

It is best to start early because the animals are most active in the morning, the temperatures are still moderate, the crowd is yet to get in, and you have the whole day to explore.

Since it gets crowded on weekends and school holidays, it is better to visit Taronga Zoo on weekdays.

The best months to visit Taronga Zoo are September, October, and November – Sydney’s spring.

Families with kids who usually attend keeper talks, feeding sessions, etc., need four to five hours to explore Taronga Zoo.

Adult-only groups tend to cover most animal exhibits at Taronga in two hours.

Taronga Zoo is divided into eight geographic regions and covers an area of 28 hectares (69 acres).

It houses more than four thousand animals, which makes it a massive attraction.

Some families turn it into a day-long activity by finding a picnic spot with stunning views of the Sydney Harbour.

The regular Taronga Zoo ticket for an adult costs A$ 47

The most significant discount on this ticket price is reserved for kids three years and below – they enter the Zoo for free.

Children between 4 to 15 years get the second-best ticket discount – they get a waiver of A$ 20 on the full adult ticket price and pay only A$ 27.

When you buy Taronga Zoo tickets online, you also qualify for an ‘online discount.’

Yes, that’s right. The entry ticket costs extra at the tourist attraction.

This is because when you buy Taronga Zoo tickets at the venue, you also pay what is known as the ‘ticketing window surcharge’ – the cost of maintaining a ticketing window.

The below-given cards also qualify for a concession of A$ 10 on the Taronga Zoo ticket price –

Attend shows

There are two shows you must try and pack in during your Zoo visit.

Both are free for Taronga entry ticket holders.

However, they get crowded fast, so you must reach 10 minutes before the scheduled time to save a seat.

The free-flight bird show at Taronga Zoo begins at 12 pm and 3 pm daily; no booking is required.

It showcases the natural behavior of birds like Andean Candor. Watch out for its three-meter broad wings.

The Seal Show at Taronga Zoo show begins at 11 am and 2 pm daily. On weekends an additional performance is scheduled at 1 pm.

This showcases seals’ natural behavior, like catching fish, climbing, etc.

You also see other species, such as the Australian Sea lion, Californian Sealion, etc.

Attend Keeper Talks

You can spend the whole day attending Keeper Talks at this Zoo.

All Taronga Zoo Keeper talks and feeding sessions are free to attend. That is, they are included in your entry ticket.

Most of them last only 10 minutes, so it is better to arrive early.

You get to see Taronga’s Asian Elephants up close and learn how the lady of the house leads her herd.

Time: 1.45 pm, daily Duration: 15 mins

You get to understand why Giraffes are such amazing animals. How they are gentle and yet can be firm when required.

Time: 10.40 pm, daily Duration: 15 minutes

Meerkat family in Taronga Zoo Sydney is a lively bunch and to watch them eat insects, fruits, and vegetables during their feeding time is fantastic.

Time: 11.30 pm, daily Duration: 15 minutes

Gorillas have interesting social dynamics, and you get to learn and see it for yourself during this talk. You will see firsthand why Gorillas are known to be intelligent.

Time: 2.30 pm, daily Duration: 10 minutes

Chimpanzees have interesting family dynamics, which you will be able to observe from up close as they have their lunch.

Time: 12 pm, daily Duration: 15 minutes

The keepers tell the story of the penguin’s journey to the Taronga Zoo. How the injured and washed-up penguins reach the Zoo and settle down in their new home.

Both kids and adults can strap on a helmet and navigate suspension bridges, climbing walls, flying foxes, etc., even as they see the animals below and Sydney Harbour on the horizon.

Depending on which course you choose, this course can be 45 minutes to two hours.

Day trip to remember

We had a great day at the Zoo. Our only regret is that we did not get up earlier and spend more time there.

The Kangaroos and Wallabies were great (you get close) but the highlights for us were probably the Platypus and Australian nocturnal animals – some of which we had not heard of before.

Perfect day for a young family

Try to go outside of busy times (school holidays). The seal show is amazing – the kids were captivated! Also, bring a spare change of clothes and swimmers in warm weather as there are great playgrounds with water features to play in. – Alison B

Taronga Zoo Questions & Answers

What is the best way to get from Taronga Zoo to Milsons Point Station? It is our first Visit to Sydney and we want to visit the zoo, then walk across Harbour Bridge from Milsons Point towards The Rocks.

we went to Taronga Zoo from Circular Quay using Manly Fast Ferry. and from Taronga Zoo we went to Manly beach.

You can take the Opal bus which only cost you $2.15 to milsons point station.

The easiest way is to return on the Zoo ferry to Circular Quay. Enjoy the return journey across the harbour seeing beautiful Sydney from a different direction. Then catch the train from Circular Quay Railway Station to Milsons point Railway Station, which is the closest railway station to the Harbour Bridge in North Sydney. Then commence your walk. The station is approximately 400 metres to the north pylon on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Have a nice day.

What about using Uber or taking a taxi straight from the zoo to the bridge? Is that doable? (There are 5 people in our group, in case that makes a difference.)

I would suggest getting onto the Tripadvisor website or App and finding out that way. There are buses, trains, ferries. How you do it depends on multiple factors. Also btw that will be a BIG day, doing the zoo and then walking the bridge. Not that it isn't doable, but just so you're aware.

I’m not a local, but I think to do what you want you will have to take the ferry back from Taronga, to the circular quay, take the train from there to the station you want then walk back across the bridge. The circular quay is basically at the rocks, and the bridge starts not far from there. There may be a bus option from Taronga, but that will take a long time. If nothing else walk across the bridge and back again from the Rocks. Have a great trip!

There are public bus station(s) at Taronga zoo. To go to mission point station, you probably need to transfer from one bus to another and may require you to walk a few minutes between the stations. Bus schedules vary depending on which day you are travelling. Best to use Opal card which is a store value ticket which can be used in any public transport. They have an app which also provide an interactive route planner that let you plan ahead (even 1 day ahead) of the bus routing and fare. I found it to be indispensable while we were in Sydney.

Beloved elephants to say goodbye to Taronga Zoo after almost 20 years

A sian elephants Tang Mo and Pak Boon will bid farewell to Taronga Zoo after almost two decades to make way for a new mixed species habitat.

The pair will depart the zoo in mid-2025 as part of Taronga's "Great Migration" and move into a newly established 14-hectare, open-range habitat in South Australia with three other elephants from Auckland Zoo and Perth Zoo.

Their departure will make way for a new, multi-species habitat featuring 'Hari', a Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros from Dubbo Zoo, who will join several Water Buffalo.

Greater One-horned Rhinoceros are often referred to as "real-life unicorns" due to their distinctive solo horn which distinguishes them from other rhino species.

Taronga Conservation Society Australia CEO Cameron Kerr said Tang Mo and Pak Boon have been much-loved residents of the zoo arriving in 2006 to establish a regional breeding program.

"While these magnificent creatures will certainly be missed in Sydney, I'm so heartened to plan for their move to Monarto Safari Park where they will be able to join a bigger herd and live in a larger more complex habitat," Kerr said.

"I'd like to thank the Kingdom of Thailand for their ongoing support of this program and also acknowledge the dedicated keepers and staff across Taronga Zoo Sydney who have cared for our elephants in Sydney for almost two decades."

Zoos SA Chief Executive Elaine Bensted said Monarto can't wait to welcome them next year.

"We can't wait to watch as Pak Boon and Tang Mo settle in alongside Burma, Permai and Putra Mas at Monarto Safari Park, with the two females joining the herd, just as they would in the wild," she said.

"The most important thing is to get all the elephants safely to their new home in South Australia and that they settle and start to benefit from being in a social herd."
