Tour support is financial support for a touring band. It can be used to cover per diems, travel, accommodation, equipment, and vehicle rental and whatever other expenses come up during a tour. Historically, when tour support was offered, it was usually paid by the record label. In the 21st century, however, tour support and tour sponsorship has gravitated to business conglomerates and even drink companies with no direct involvement in music.

Industry Conglomerates

The music business has drastically changed in response to the various crises and opportunities of digitalization. As a part of this sometimes amazing, at other times troubling transformation, some companies, and prominent artists have dissolved almost completely the distinction between artist management , tour management and record label, a part of a trend toward the monetization of everything related to the artist and her music. The endgame in this trend may be the artist who owns their label. In such an instance, does this mean the artist has nowhere to look for tour support or that has complete control over the tour support budget? For big artists, the latter certainly; for others more like no tour support at all.

Small Label

Touring is extremely expensive, so it's not surprising that tour support has become hard to come by, especially for indie music . It has been a continuing and growing trend; now, only the largest superstars are likely to get significant tour support. There are a few reasons for this:

  • As album sales have shrunk, often replaced by digital releases of singles, Indie labels may not have enough money to foot the bill
  • The returns on tour support are not guaranteed, especially on tours that are essentially promotional tours designed to help a band build a fan base - the tour may help the band find an audience, but it may not directly translate into enough record sales to offset the investment.

Even before the digital revolution, small label support for touring groups suffered from these and other more-or-less built-in problems. Often the tours succeeded in expanding the fan base -- but thereby enabled the artist's move from the small label to a major. In other instances, as with Stomu Yamashta's ground-breaking, but too-hip-for-the-room world music group GO, even strong tour support offered by adept music promoter , producer, and label head Clive Davis ultimately ended without a payoff. It, incidentally, was a group in which almost every member was a star or superstar, including Stevie Winwood, krautrock and EDM pioneer Klause Schultz, Al Demiola, and Santana's star drummer, Michael Shrieve. And there were more -- it was an eleven-piece band in which every member had a fan base. Fans just didn't necessarily want to see all 11 of them onstage at the same time.

Which may be the underlying lesson of the trend toward little or no tour support at all for most musicians: you can't push on a string . The contemporary attitude by tour management and labels now tends to be along the lines that either a new band will succeed somehow without tour support because the audience really wants to hear them (even if they didn't know it until they catch them on their painful, budget-less first tour) or ultimately the audience really doesn't, and no amount of tour money will finally make a difference.

“Prepare.”

Sleep Token are currently in the US and will start their Teeth Of God North American run tomorrow at the Financial Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona.

The band are promoting their 2023 album Take Me Back To Eden , which was released via Spinefarm.

Metal Hammer gave Take Me Back To Eden a glowing 8/10 review upon release.

Journalist Dannii Leivers wrote: “Combining feeling and sound in a potent, masterful statement, …Eden is Sleep Token’s strongest effort to date.

“And, while they’ll always be Marmite, there’s no question it will delight those already onboard.

“This is a record that not only expands the band’s universe and continues to prod metal’s boundaries, but considers what it means to be human. Otherworldly they may be, but there’s the deepest empathy within.”

Sleep Token have since inked a deal with major label RCA.

The band announced the signing by calling it the start of their “new era”, which they’d previously teased by unveiling new masks in December 2023.

Mask designer Lani Hernadez-David stated in an interview with Metal Hammer that month: “I’m sure they have something in mind that the fans will appreciate greatly.

“There’s definitely a new era coming, but I won’t speak too much on that, because I’m not really clued up on it.”

As Biden abandons 'Bidenomics,' Harris makes a different case before Black voters

tour support discogs

ATLANTA — Vice President Kamala Harris is shaking up her approach to the Black community and making the economy the focal point of a multi-state tour that she kicked off on Monday in Georgia.

Harris came to the battleground state to make an urgent case to voters who delivered a surprise victory for President Joe Biden that he'll ease their everyday costs if he wins reelection. It’s part of a concerted effort by the White House to win back disappointed Americans by putting kitchen table issues at the front of the president's agenda.

During much of last year, Biden campaigned on a slogan of "Bidenomics" touting wins such as historic investments in infrastructure, manufacturing and the middle class. But Biden struggled to convince voters they were experiencing a post-pandemic economic revival as the cost of food; housing and other services have remained high – even after inflation has decreased from its peak.

During her visit, the vice president focused on lowering housing costs, decreasing debt and increasing wealth for Black communities.

"Everybody wants a job and President Joe Biden and I are very proud that in our administration, we have brought Black unemployment down to historic lows," Harris said. "But that's a baseline."

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Harris sought to draw attention to actions the Biden administration has taken to increase entrepreneurs' access to capital, lower housing costs, support historically Black Colleges and Universities and lessen college debt during a moderated conversation and a stop at an Atlanta nonprofit.

"We know that home ownership is probably the most effective way to build intergenerational wealth," Harris declared during an on-stage discussion with the leaders of a Black entrepreneur network.

Biden's support from Black voters is experiencing significant attrition in particular. Much of it coming from Black men.

He trails presumptive GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump in a handful of battleground states, including Georgia. An April survey taken by Morning Consult showed him eight points down in the swing state that he beat Trump in nearly four years ago. Georgia voters say the economy is their top concern in the 2024 presidential election, and just 29% say the economy is on the right track.

Harris' job approval rating is also upside down with voters. She had a 52% disapproval rating nationally in a USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll in March. A bare majority of Black voters, 51%, approved in the same poll.

Her overall support from voters was similar in Georgia in the Morning Consult survey taken in April, when 38% of the state's voters said they had a favorable view of her and 53% said they did not.

Her visit to Atlanta included a stop at the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs, where she spoke with Black small business owners about increasing wealth and ways, they are working to support one another. She toured the facility with Georgia's senators, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, and Rep. Nikema Williams, who also acts as the state party chair.

The vice president also sat down with Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings of the business and finance podcast Earn Your Leisure.

In the discussion Harris raised the issue of highways that cut through Black communities, which she said the administration says its working to reconnect. One such project in Atlanta is receiving $158 million from the Biden administration.

She also slapped back at conservatives' attacks on diversity equity and inclusion initiatives, telling the audience, "We understand that you can’t truly invest in the strength of our nation, if you do not pay attention to diversity, equity and inclusion."

Harris has done events on the economy in underserved communities in the past. Georgia marks the start of an economic opportunity tour that will take her to Michigan next week. A previous tour that Harris embarked on in battleground states aimed to increase support for reproductive rights.

Biden-Harris Administration Invests $105 Million in Community-Based Organizations to Improve Maternal and Infant Health Across the Country

Healthy Start funding will better support moms and babies to improve health in communities experiencing high disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes

Announcement made in Atlanta, GA, the second stop of HRSA’s year-long Enhancing Maternal Health Initiative

Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), announced $105 million in funding to support more than 100 community-based organizations working to improve maternal and infant health. HRSA Administrator Carole Johnson highlighted the news during a visit to Southside Medical Center, a new Healthy Start awardee, in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia is the second stop on HRSA’s national Enhancing Maternal Health Initiative tour. Today’s Healthy Start funding announcement will support the health care and social needs of moms and babies in high need communities to help improve community health and tackle the unacceptable disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes.

“Maternal health is a fundamental human right and every mother deserves access to quality care and support. Having a safe and healthy pregnancy and birth shouldn’t depend on the color of your skin, what language you speak at home, or where you live,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “We know that by expanding access to proven health care best practices we can help moms and their children thrive. That’s why the Biden-Harris Administration continues to support organizations working to improve maternal and infant health, especially in communities most at risk of poor outcomes.”

“At the Health Resources and Services Administration, we know that healthy babies begin with healthy moms,” said HRSA Administrator Carole Johnson. “Today’s $105 million investment in our Healthy Start Program is essential to implementing the Biden-Harris Administration’s Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis . Through these Healthy Start awards we will support on-the-ground, community-based organizations who will work every day to help expecting and new moms get the health care and key supports – like transportation to prenatal care and food assistance – they need to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies.”

Healthy Start is a HRSA-funded program that focuses on improving the well-being of expecting mothers and those who have just given birth, addressing needs in communities with infant mortality rates that are 1.5 times the national average or greater, and combatting the disparities in outcomes that have resulted in higher mortality rates for Black and Indigenous women and infants of color. Healthy Start Programs are able to tailor services to community needs, including by supporting culturally responsive health care services, food assistance, emergency supplies, transportation to care, housing navigation, and other critical social supports. Healthy Start also supports clinical service providers and other key members of the workforce, including mental health professionals, doulas, nutritionists, social workers, case managers and other community health workers.

HRSA’s Enhancing Maternal Health Initiative is focused on accelerating HRSA’s maternal health work to address maternal mortality and maternal health disparities in partnership with women, grantees, community organizations, and state and local health officials across the country. HRSA is the arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that funds state and local community efforts to improve maternal and child health; invests in sustaining and expanding maternal health care services in rural communities; funds training and loan repayment to support the next generation of the health workforce including obstetricians (OBs), midwives and community-based doulas; provides community-based maternal health care in high need communities regardless of individuals’ ability to pay through HRSA-funded community health centers; and, runs the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 833-TLC-MAMA. The Enhancing Maternal Health Initiative is working in areas of the country with high maternal mortality rates where HRSA has programs that can work together to help advance better outcomes, including Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Oregon, and the District of Columbia.

Kamala Harris Leads Push to Shore Up Democratic Support From Black Voters

Speaking in Atlanta, the vice president began a national tour to highlight how the Biden administration is trying to help Black Americans economically.

Reporting from Atlanta

  • April 29, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris made a new effort to energize Black voters in battleground states on Monday, visiting Atlanta for the kickoff of a national economic tour that will highlight how the Biden administration says its policies are helping a constituency that will be vital to Democrats’ success in November.

Speaking to a largely Black crowd of about 400 people, Ms. Harris laid out ways that she and President Biden have sought to improve Black Americans’ upward mobility and help them realize their business ambitions. A chief objective of the tour, she said, was to let Black business owners and entrepreneurs know about the resources available to them.

“I need the help of the leaders who are here to get the word out so people know what is available to them,” she said during a conversation at the Georgia International Convention Center with Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings of the financial literacy podcast “Earn Your Leisure,” which offers business advice to its more than two million listeners, a majority of whom are Black.

Explaining how government policies have widened the racial wealth gap over the years, Ms. Harris pointed to the Biden administration’s attempts to try to narrow it, including small-business grants and efforts to forgive student loans.

“We want to make sure people know about it — and then know where they can receive — the support to be ready to take on the work and then to grow their capacity,” she said.

Her remarks at the official White House-hosted event — drier and less political than her forceful campaign speeches on abortion recently — meandered at times.

“As much as anything, the spirit behind the push for access to capital, and in particular, on this tour, focusing on minority small businesses and Black-owned small businesses, and small businesses and entrepreneurs who are Black men, is to recognize the disparities that have existed around the access to the opportunity to achieve success,” she said at one point.

But at other moments Ms. Harris was more pointed, including when she defended diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that conservative lawmakers have pushed to dismantle in state governments and at colleges and universities .

“In spite of those who in certain parts of our country want to attack D.E.I., we understand that you can’t truly invest in the strength of our nation if you don’t pay attention to diversity, equity and inclusion,” she said.

The vice president’s Atlanta visit, her 12th trip to Georgia since taking office, was the first stop in a tour of several battleground states in the coming weeks. Much of the tour will focus on Black small businesses and economic issues that are especially pressing for Black communities. She will visit Detroit next week, aides said.

Ms. Harris’s tour will also seek to engage Black men, whom Democrats are urgently courting as polls show them softening in their support for Mr. Biden. Much of the crowd at the vice president’s event consisted of Black male political and business leaders, as well as a contingent of students from Morehouse College, a historically Black men’s college in Atlanta where President Biden will deliver the commencement address next month.

Before her speech, Ms. Harris visited an entrepreneurship hub near downtown Atlanta where she spoke with Black small-business owners.

Flanked by Georgia’s Democratic senators, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, as well as Representative Nikema Williams, the state Democratic Party chair, Ms. Harris highlighted the Biden administration’s marquee legislation, like the CHIPS and Science Act, which offers funding for small-business research projects.

She also underlined the roughly $7 billion that the administration has poured into historically Black colleges and universities, the largest investment of any White House administration.

Atlanta is set to receive more than $150 million for a project called The Stitch that is meant to revitalize the city’s downtown areas and connect them to its growing midtown neighborhoods. Georgia is one of 40 states that will receive money from a White House program that aims to repair the decades-old societal damage from federal transportation projects that disproportionately displaced Black communities.
