Fact checked by Joseph Varney

It is already tricky enough to wash a vehicle as large as an RV, so you can forgive yourself if you cut corners using a wash and wax product. Although it is better to use a separate product for washing and waxing your RV, using the best RV wash and wax still seems like a good compromise if you are like most people who cannot spend an entire day cleaning their RV.

best rv wash and wax

However, not all wash and wax vehicle cleaning products work the same. If you use your RV quite often, you will need something a lot tougher on dirt than the one you use to clean your car. To reduce or even rid of all trouble in finding the best RV cleaner, helpful information is gathered in this article to teach you all the things you need to know.

Best RV Wash and Wax Reviews

1. gel-gloss 128-oz. rv wash and wax.

travel trailer wash and wax

The reason I went ahead and bought the Gel-Gloss RV Wash and Wax is that I wanted to spend more time enjoying my RV rather than cleaning it. With this product, I noticed that I was able to cut the time I usually spend cleaning my 30-foot RV in half.

I was a bit on the fence about using a wash and wax product since I know that it is not as good as laying on a separate wax coat. Yet, it also sounded promising when I was reading the gel-gloss RV wash and wax reviews. Luckily, this one did a respectable job in all fairness, and I think it is all thanks to the carnauba wax additive.

Although the finish is not as shiny, the fact that I did not have to go over the entire surface of the RV with a separate product makes it a good choice.

You might like to know about this RV wash soap because it does not strip away any existing wax on the surface of your RV. I like how this cleaner keeps most of the wax from when I last visited the RV washing near me.

Furthermore, I would not want to use products that are harmful to the environment. So purchasing this cleaner for RV exterior makes excellent sense as it is completely biodegradable and non-toxic. Plus, you do not have to worry about the runoff you make when you finish rinsing.

  • Cuts cleaning time in half
  • Contains carnauba wax
  • Does not strip away any residual wax from the previous washing
  • Completely biodegradable and non-toxic
  • Does not leave streaks or watermarks on the paint
  • Not provide the shiniest finish
  • Not ideal for removing heavy oxidation

2. Meguiar’s M5032 32-oz. RV Cleaner Wax

travel trailer wash and wax

Meguiar’s has always been a household name for car cleaning products, and the One-step Cleaner Wax was true to the reputation of the brand. It thoroughly cleaned and polished my RV in less time than it would take me to apply each product separately.

As mentioned, this cleaning product also comes with a polishing compound. I am pleasantly surprised to discover that it eliminates the annoying micro-scratches and haze left on the gel coat. The polish is so gentle that it only affects the top of the clear coat, yet it brings back fiberglass surfaces’ shiny color.

This product also leaves behind a wax coating. This layer provides durable and long-lasting protection against saltwater air, rust and corrosion, and the UV sun rays. The wax coating left behind by this wash and wax is comparable to separate wax products. However, it still does not last as long.

I like the most about this professional-grade cleaning product because it is safe to use by hand. Of course, it is best to use gloves, but without such protection, your hands will just get a bit dry.

  • Reduce the time to clean and wax a full-size RV
  • Polish away minor blemishes, micro-scratches and haze
  • Gentle formulation, yet tough on dirt and stains
  • Leaves a wax layer that shines
  • Can use it by hand or through a foam gun
  • Has a funny smell to it

3. Aero Cosmetics 128-oz. Car Wash Wax

travel trailer wash and wax

If you are looking for a quick and easy way to give your RV a good shine, the Aero Cosmetics waterless car wash is the thing for you. If your RV is just slightly dusty or dirty, nothing too serious, then you just need to spray on this product. Let it sit for a while, then thoroughly wipe it off the surface.

I am thrilled that I also use it as a wax-as-you-dry product. It means it is possible to use it as a regular polish and wax.

The neat thing about it is that I do not need to wait for the RV to dry before applying it. I can just spray it on the surface, regardless if it is dry or wet, then rub it into the surface. Just like me, you will be surprised at how shiny it is.

Unlike other waterless car wash and wax products, this one can pick up quite a lot of the dirt on the paint or fiberglass’s surface. This product has a high lubricant formulation that can lift dirt on contact. With a bit of elbow grease, you can get the same results if you just used a regular wax product.

It is an eco-friendly product, so you can use it even if you are near a body of water. Moreover, since it requires no water, you are saving quite a lot of money on your water bills.

  • Efficiently lifts and removes dirt without using water
  • Ideal for use as a separate polish and wax
  • Allow uses on wet surfaces
  • Boasts of a long-lasting coating
  • Completely biodegradable and saves gallons of water
  • Leaves a slightly greasy layer of wax on the surface

4. Star Brite 71500 RV Wash & Wax

travel trailer wash and wax

By far, this Star Brite RV wash & wax is the most economical car wash product that I know of. I only need to dilute a couple of capfuls of the solution in a large bucket of water, yet that is enough to clean and protect a 20-foot RV. I doubt that I would be able to use up the gallon container’s entire content for an entire year.

Even though you will need to dilute this cleaning product, it is still strong enough to deal with stubborn dirt and stains. I have great success using it on dried tree sap, bird droppings, and other tough stains. For even tougher, deep-seated dirt, I suggest that you dab a bit of the concentrated cleaner on the trouble spot and give it a little scrub.

What is even more surprising about this travel trailer wash and wax is that even though it is incredibly tough on dirt, it will not remove any existing wax coating or harm any vinyl decals that you might have on your RV. I have quite a collection of bumper stickers at the back of my RV, and they remain beautiful after I use this cleaning product multiple times.

This product is also a real time-saver. Aside from being the most affordable RV cleaner for fiberglass , you can also safely use it on all exterior parts of an RV. It does not matter if the surface is paint, fiberglass, or even EPDM rubber roofs. The Star Brite wash and wax can clean it without causing any damage.

  • Economical – a couple of capfuls to clean an entire RV
  • Tough on dirt and grime
  • You can use it undiluted for tough stains
  • Safe to use on all interior and exterior surfaces of the RV
  • Not damage vinyl decals and stickers
  • The wax additive is not as shiny as expected

5. Camco 40493 Pro-Strength Wash and Wax

travel trailer wash and wax

I tried the Camco 40493 Pro-Strength Wash and Wax for one of my RVs cleaning, and this product performed beyond my expectations. Instead of an entire day, I finished washing my RV in just a couple of hours. It left my RV incredibly clean and shiny.

The secret of this fantastic cleaning product is the carnauba wax additive. In truth, its cleaning agents gently lift off the dirt and dust away from surfaces without causing damage to the clear coat or gel-coat of the RV.

Another time-saving feature is that you do not even need to buff the just-cleaned surface to make it shine. After rinsing away the soap, the cleaning product leaves a thin layer of carnauba wax on the surface. It is the reason why any surface treated by this product looks glossy.

Aside from that, the carnauba wax also happens to be a hydrophobic surface, which means it is waterproof. Any water that hits the RV will not form beads. Instead, it will form sheets that will fall off the edges. Such a feature prevents watermarks from appearing on the surface, especially after it rains.

  • Significantly reduces the cleaning time and no buffing required
  • Shines the surface of the RV effectively
  • Features a wax layer that protects the surface from corrosion
  • Provides a surface for rainwater to run off the side of your RV
  • The shiny wax layer is not that long-lasting

6. Thetford 32517 1-gallon RV Wash and Wax

travel trailer wash and wax

One thing I genuinely find impressive about the Thetford wash and wax is its proven versatility. Unlike other cleaning products where you have to be careful where you use them, this wash and wax agent is safe for fiberglass, painted surfaces, chrome, and even EPDM rubber roofs.

Speaking of saving time, I also like that this two-in-one product produces impressive results. I use my fair share of different wash and wax products, and it seems like most of them do not even contain the wax they claim to have. This Thetford product is different, though, as the wax layer it leaves behind has a deep shine.

The wax coating is not just for boating a sleek look. It acts as a protective layer that prevents the paint or fiberglass underneath from extensive damage.

The wax layer is also extremely hydrophobic, meaning it repels water. For instance, when it rains, the water will not bead on top of the paint. It will form into sheets and flow off the wax surface. Such a function means no unsightly watermarks and less frequent washing.

This product is also quite economical. A gallon of this stuff is more than enough to last an entire year of cleaning. In my case, I often just dilute around half a cup of this concentrated wash and wax to two gallons of clean water.

More importantly, this cleaner is also so sudsy that it can gently lift off the dirt and dust from the surface upon contact. Thus, I find no micro-scratches left on the surface of the paint of my RV.

  • A versatile product for multiple surface materials
  • Boasts of a one-step formulation to fasten the cleaning process
  • Leaves a shiny wax coating comparable to separate products
  • Leaves behind a hydrophobic wax coating to resist water
  • A little goes a long way
  • Requires a bit of elbow grease for tough dirt

7. Gel-Gloss 32-oz. RV Cleaner and Wax

travel trailer wash and wax

I always hate dealing with the black streaks left on the surface of my RV after a couple of days of rain. However, the first time I used this product, it effortlessly cut through the black streaks and the other particularly tough surface dirt and stains. I am so glad I trusted the many positive Gel-gloss RV cleaner and wax reviews.

However, even though this product is quite tough on dirt and stains, it is also gentle enough not to strip away the wax that you previously applied on the surface. With that in mind, you have an assurance that aside from cleaning your RV, it can also bolster the protection left behind when you last washed it.

Speaking of the wax, this product contains carnauba wax, one of the best commercially available vehicle waxes that one can buy today. The great thing about carnauba wax is that it is safe to use on any surface, from boats to RVs. With that, you can wash it anywhere you like without causing severe damages whatsoever.

When using this product, I love that I am doing my part in protecting the environment because it is entirely biodegradable. Unlike some concentrated soaps and detergents that can harm nature, this one does not contain harsh chemicals that will cause pollution.

  • Gets rid of black streaks easily
  • Does not strip away the existing wax coating
  • Completely biodegradable and safe for the environment
  • Can be used on both RV, boats, and any surface
  • Does not provide a deep enough shine

8. Camco 40922 32-oz. Wash & Wax Cleaner

travel trailer wash and wax

Although this Camco RV wash and wax is primarily for boats, you can still expect it to work well on RVs because they both contain the same materials anyway.

Another reason why I like the Camco Armada wash and wax cleaner is that it is a great time-saving tool. This product cuts the time spent by more than half because I can wash and wax the RV exterior simultaneously.

This wash and wax cleaner solution works hard to remove dirt and grime on the surface of the RV, but the great thing is that it does not strip away the existing wax coating from the last time you had your RV washed. It even does the opposite. It replenishes the existing wax with a coating of fresh carnauba wax, thus keeping the surface at least as shiny as before.

I am very particular when it comes to products that I use to wash my vehicles. It is mainly because there is a creek running just beside my property. I also have a couple of pets at home, so it is crucial for me to make sure that everything I use on my RV is non-toxic. With that, I will have peace of mind knowing that my pets will be unharmed, in case they accidentally drink the runoff from washing the RV.

  • Works well to remove dirt and stains on the surface of the RV
  • Effective for use on all material surfaces
  • Cuts the washing time of RVs by more than half
  • Protects and replenishes the existing wax layer
  • Completely non-toxic and save to use around pets
  • Requires thorough drying of the surface to prevent the formation of water spots

9. Bio-Kleen M01109 Super Suds RV Wash

travel trailer wash and wax

This specific RV wash lives up to its name, which is the Bio-Kleen Super Suds. It seems to produce an incredible amount of suds, making it an effective cleaning product. For added efficiency, it creates a lot of thick foam that lifts dirt and grime away from the surface of the RV, so you do not have to scrub quite as much.

Because it cleans so gently yet thoroughly, this car washing does not leave any swirl marks or haziness on your RV surface. Since my vehicle has a shiny polish layer, the cleaning product must excel at cleaning yet protecting the beautiful coating.

In truth, instead of removing existing wax, the Bio-Kleen Super Suds contains polymers that get left behind after rinsing the soap. This vehicle wash adds even more wax to what is already on the surface to provide even more protection for the paint surface.

The most important feature of this product for me is that it is environmentally friendly. I find the non-toxic quality important because I have a small body of water in my property, and I do not want anything damaging to seep into it.

  • Produces a lot of suds that effectively lift dirt and stains
  • Cleans gently and does not strip away the existing polish
  • Adds synthetic polymers to enhance the existing wax coating
  • Does not leave any swirl marks or micro-scratches on the paint
  • Safe to use for your surrounding environments
  • Does not provide an impressive shiny surface

10. Walbernize One-Step Wash and Wax

travel trailer wash and wax

Due to my experiences, I trust that any cleaning product that Airstream endorses will surely be good. This best RV wash and wax for aluminum siding is an easy way to keep your RV always looking like new.

For most RV-owners, the cleaning agent that leaves behind a shiny wax layer is what they look for. If that is the case for you, purchasing this one makes excellent sense. It is not just your usual maintenance cleaning product, but a true professional detailing cleaner.

The wax coating left behind by this one-step wash and wax is quite good that it can pass for a professional-grade wax. As mentioned earlier, this cleaning product comes with a wax additive that remains after rinsing away the soap. Unlike other wash and wax cleaners, Walbernize leaves a deep shine that will make your RV look just like new.

Another thing that I like about the Walbernize wash and wax cleaner is that it is highly economical. Note that it is a highly concentrated cleaning product. You will need to mix 6 ounces to a gallon of water, and it will be enough to clean an entire 20-foot RV easily. I believe that this half-gallon will last for at least an entire year of average use.

The best thing about this product is that the wax coating is not only for show but is also a hydrophobic shield. It means that water will not bead on top of the finish, but will form sheets and run off the RV edge instead. If water cannot remain on top of this wax finish, neither will dirt or grime, so you will need to wash your RV less frequently as before.

  • Endorsed and sold by the highly reputable Airstream
  • Leaves a wax coating that gets shinier during use
  • A hydrophobic wax to prevent watermarks and light oxidation damage
  • Highly economical – Just a few capfuls diluted in a gallon of water for each use
  • Does not leave any swirl mark or haze on the clear coat
  • Not intended for hot climates as it dries up quickly

11. McKee’s 37 RV MKRV-151 Wash & Wax

travel trailer wash and wax

The selling point of McKee’s wash and wax is that it contains genuine carnauba wax. In my opinion, it is one of the few wash and wax cleaners that provides a high-gloss finish almost equivalent to what professional wax products can provide. If you want to make your RV look as if it just rolled out of the dealership, then this product is what you need.

The shiny wax finish is not the only thing that is great about it. The cleaner can produce a thick lather for easy lifting away most loose dirt and stains on the paint’s surface due to its high concentration.

Other than requiring less scrubbing, the highly-concentrated formula can afford fewer to no swirl marks or micro-scratches left on the surface of the clear coat. This product works so efficiently that you do not need to scrub even if used with a foam gun.

Just leave the suds on the surface for a couple of minutes, then rinse off using a slightly high-pressure water hose. The carnauba wax finish is hydrophobic, so your RV exterior does not absorb moisture then grow mold and mildew.

Unlike other cleaning products, McKee’s wash and wax do not contain harsh butyl alcohols and detergents. It is gentle enough that it does not strip away any wax coating on the RV surface, but instead deposits even more to replenish and revitalize the existing finish. Surprisingly, the more I use this product, the shinier my RV surface gets.

  • Leaves a high-gloss shine
  • Creates a thick lather that requires little to no scrubbing
  • Leaves a hydrophobic coating, thus mildew and mold growth
  • Gentle as it contains no harsh butyl alcohols and detergents
  • The high-gloss finish comes naturally
  • Should not be used under direct sunlight

12. Duragloss 542 RV Cleaner

travel trailer wash and wax

If you have an older RV with stubborn mildew stains, you should try using Duragloss RV cleaner and mildew buster. After a few tries, I find out that the Duragloss542 model can clean RV surfaces and disinfect and remove stains left behind by mold and mildew.

Mold and mildew stains are quite common in RVs because there are so many parts that can retain water and serve as a breeding ground for fungi. Using this product removes the stains left behind by mildew and kills any remaining spores so that you will never have to deal with it again.

Aside from mildew stains, this cleaning product can also eliminate oxidation stains, bug splatters, bird droppings, leaf stains, and other difficult dirt and blemishes. It contains efficient surfactants that penetrate deep inside the clear coat and lift stubborn stains and dirt away from the surface. Hence, it often takes me less time to finish cleaning my RV.

Besides effectively cleaning RV exterior, this one does an excellent job with my RV awnings too. In truth, the mildew fighting agents did a great job at removing all fungi’ traces in the fabric, but without damaging the waterproof surface.

  • Works incredibly well against mold and mildew stains
  • Effective against oxidation stains, bug splatters, bird droppings, leaf stains, and other difficult blemishes.
  • Contains efficient surfactants for shorter cleaning time
  • A versatile product for use on RV awnings and more
  • Has a bleach-like smell

Best RV Washes and Waxes Buyer Guide

best-rv-cleaner

Because there are many different brands and types to choose from, finding that one RV wash and wax that will fit your needs can be somewhat tricky. However, if you break down the characteristics that make for a good product, then consider those factors, your search will be much easier.

To help you while shopping, here are some of the details that you need to keep an eye out for:

Price – You will be getting the kind of product that you paid for, so you should not set your budget for an RV wash too low. Using the cheapest vehicle wash shampoo may lead to severe paint damage in the long run.

On the other hand, you do not need to purchase the most expensive ones at all. Note that you can find many low-priced RV exterior cleaning products in the middle of the road while still doing a respectable job at cleaning.

The point here is that you should not set a budget that is too low, nor should you get a cleaning product just because it is expensive. Start your search in the median-priced brands. You may find something that works well without investing too much.

The protection provided – A vehicle wash is supposed to clean the surface of the RV and protect against the elements. A good wash and wax, as the name suggests, should also contain wax additives that will remain on the surface after you rinse away the soap. The wax will give the surface of the paint a nice and deep shine.

It also needs to protect against dirt and stains, meaning they would not stick onto the surface. Moreover, the wax should provide ample protection against the UV rays of the sun. Keep in mind that prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause severe discoloration.

Polishing capability – Aside from detergent and wax, a good RV wash should also have non-abrasive polishing compounds that can help you get rid of shallow and small scratches. Although they are not as effective as true paint polishers, your choice should at least do a respectable job at making the surface smoother than it was before.

Ease of use – You are shopping for a good RV wash and wax because you want to save time and energy when cleaning your recreational vehicle. It defeats your purpose when you buy a car wash and wax that needs lots of preparation and specialized tools to use.

The vehicle shampoo should also be easy to apply and rinse off or needs a little bit of water to take the soap suds away from the surface of your RV. You can even find some RV cleaning products that do not need any water at all.

Ideally, the car wash and wax you buy will need no more than a wash mop to use properly. It should also buff easily. It would even be more helpful to go for one that comes out shiny when you dry off the surface.

Size – How often do you wash your RV? Once a week? Once a month? However, you frequently clean your RV and buy an RV wash and wax that comes in a large enough bottle. Get enough of the cleaning product that you do not have to go shopping for a new bottle of car shampoo every week or so.

Also, most of the time, you can save more by buying RV wash and wax in bulk rather than buying them in small batches. Even if there are still many cleaning products left over, you can store it for years without it losing any of its effectiveness.

How Many Types of Wash and Wax for RV Are There

Do you want to find out what your choices of RV wash and wax products are? Then here are the different types that seem to work well for RVs:

Concentrated – Concentrated car shampoos are the most common cleaning product that you will find in any auto supply store. It is commonly used for maintenance washing. It means it is usually just for getting rid of any dirt and dust that settled on your RV.

However, you can access some concentrated vehicle shampoos that are more heavy-duty in the sense that they can remove tough dirt and stains. However, if you will be using this type, you need to follow up with a good wax to provide a protective layer that the heavy-duty soap is stripped off.

Wash and Wax – This type is a step up from the basic car shampoo. Instead of just washing the paint’s surface, it also leaves a wax additive behind after rinsing off the soap.

Although it is not as good as applying a separate layer of wax after washing the RV, it is a faster and more convenient way to keep your RV paint in top condition. Keep in mind that the polish that came with these kinds of products will only last for a week or two, so you must use it quite frequently.

Waterless – A waterless wash uses high lubricity chemicals that encapsulate the dirt and grime on the paint’s surface so that you can easily wipe them off with a clean rag.

However, if your RV is even just moderately dirty, a waterless car wash will not work that well. Such a camper wash and wax is ideal for light dust, like when you have left your RV in your parking garage for a month or so.

How Do RV Washes and Waxes Work

These products work the same way as regular car shampoos. The soap part of the product loosens up and lifts the dirt away from the paint job’s surface. However, it does not stop there.

A good car wash and wax also leaves a thin film of wax on the surface after you rinse the soap off the vehicle. This thin layer will help by providing a shield that protects against the sun’s harmful UV rays. It can also prevent dust and dirt from sticking onto the surface.

However, the wax finish left behind by many brands of RV wash and wax cleaners is not quite as durable. Even at times, it does not look quite as good as the finish left by a separate wax. RV wash and wax cleaning products are usually only good for touch up cleaning, not for full-on RV detailing.

You will notice that the shine left behind by the wash and wax will start to fade after a week or so. If you use a proper wax and polish, your RV will gleam for months, requiring only occasional dusting and buffing.

However, it does not necessarily mean that wash and wax products are no good. It even works great if you do not have enough free time even during the weekends to get your RV ready for your next camping trip. It is a good way to give your RV a nice and shiny look in less than half of the time it would take you to detail your vehicle completely.

Who Makes the Best Wash and Wax for RV

Although there are many RV wash and wax cleaning products available at present, I consider only a handful of them as among the best. Among the trusted brands in this area are Gel-Gloss, Meguiar, Aero Cosmetics, Star Brite, Camco, Thetford, Bio-Kleen, Walbernize, McKee’s, and Duragloss.

If you spot any of the mentioned brands on the shelves when you are out shopping for an RV, I highly recommend that you give them a try.

What Can I Use to Clean My Fiberglass RV

The great thing about fiberglass is that it is more forgiving than just plain gloss-painted surface, so you can use more aggressive and somewhat abrasive detergents. If you will be giving your RV a thorough cleaning from top to bottom, you can use liquid laundry detergent.

However, you should use an RV fiberglass cleaner specifically formulated for fiberglass surfaces. Just remember that you will need to restore the gel-coat of the fiberglass using restoration products. If you do not do this crucial step, your RV finish will look dull and not that appealing.

How to Use Gel-Gloss RV Wash and Wax

You can use gel-gloss wash and wax the same way you would any regular car shampoo. First, rinse the entire camper to remove most of the dust and dirt on the RV surface.

Next, depending on the brand of cleaner you are using, you may need to dilute the soap and wax product in a bucket of water, or spray it on the surface you will be cleaning. Use a wash mop to scrub the surface to loosen up the caked-on dirt and grime on the surface. Make sure to start on the roof so that you will not need to trouble yourself with streaking down the sides of your RV.

After you finish cleaning the RV roof, you will need to rinse it thoroughly with clean water. Dry it off using a dry wash mop. After you finish doing the roof, you can continue with the sides. Do the same steps that you used on the roof.

After drying the sides of the RV, you can use a buffer to polish lightly and make the wax layer shine a bit. However, do not expect the deep kind of shine that you get from a real wax job.

How to Clean the Outside of a Camper Trailer

The first thing you need to do when washing the exterior of an RV or a camper is to rinse off any loose dirt and dust on the surface using a regular garden hose. Do not scrub yet as the fine particles will act as an abrasive and leave tiny scratch marks all over the paint and gel-coat of the RV.

After rinsing, use your choice of vehicle shampoo or wash and wax. It is best to wash your RV in sections to avoid dealing with soap getting baked into the paint surface. Once you have completed washing and drying all the RV panels, you can use a buffing machine to make the wax shine.

If you used a car shampoo only, use a dedicated paint wax product, or a gel-coat restoration product for fiberglass to provide a protective layer that will protect the paint underneath from fading, and give a gleaming finish.

How to Wash an RV With a Pressure Washer

A typical gas-powered power washer can force out water through its nozzle with a pressure of 3,000 psi. On the other hand, an electric washer can produce up to 2,600 psi. Both pressures are not suitable for use on an RV.

If you were to try and use these kinds of pressure washers on your RV, it is greatly possible that along with the dirt, you will also strip away the gel coating, any vinyl stickers you pass along the way, and the silicone caulking in the windows and vents.

Using a pressure washer on an RV with a rubber roof will also wreck the surface. If you are keen on getting a pressure washer for your RV, get one rated for 1,200 psi, or 1,300 psi at the maximum. However, even though it is considerably weaker, you should still not use it on the rubber roof, around the windows and vents, on stickers, and other things that might peel off.

To put it simply, you should not even think of using a high-pressure washer on your RV, or on any of your vehicles for that matter. You will only create more expensive problems than solving them. Just stick to the wash mop and soapy water. It might be slower, but you will not damage your RV in the process.

Care and Maintenance

The great thing about RV wash and wax cleaning products is that you can store them for many years, and they will still work fine. However, to be on the safe side, check the manufacturer’s recommendation, which you can usually find printed on the product label.

On average, though, you can store leftover RV wash and wax for at least a year or two. Just make sure to screw on the cap securely, and have the container stored away from direct sunlight.

If you notice that the product has split, just give the container a good shake, and the ingredients should emulsify once more. If the contents remain separated even after you shook the container, the product is already past its usable lifespan.

If you are looking for a quick and easy way to keep your camper trailer clean and shiny, you need to shop around for the best RV wash and wax. However, this kind of product will not produce a finish that is quite as shiny as when you use actual wax products after washing the RV in return for convenience and time savings.

Also, the wax coating will only last a week or so (after which, you will need to rewash your RV). If you are okay with not having a showroom shine, which is not something that many RV owners are interested in any way, then using a good quality wash and wax is more than enough.

Looking for a one-step product to clean, protect, and shine your RV exterior? Gel-Gloss RV Wash and Wax has been specially formulated to do just that. Developed as part of an after-care range by TR Industries, specialists in mold release products for fiberglass and reinforced plastic manufacturers, this professional-grade product really works.

Made in the USA, its extra-concentrated formula contains no harmful detergents. Biodegradable and phosphate-free, it’s an environmentally-friendly alternative to harsh chemical-laden products. Formulated with carnauba wax for excellent levels of protection, your RV is left clean and shiny after use.

Safe and very easy to use, simply pour 2-3 ounces into a bucket, fill with water, and lather it on generously with a soft mitt or brush. Rinse off for a streak-free finish without water spots, before drying with a soft towel for the best results. This product will not remove previously applied waxes, although it remains highly effective at lifting heavy dirt and grime.

Available in either one gallon or 32-ounce formats, this highly concentrated RV wash and wax cleaner is very economical. One quart (32 oz) produces 16 gallons of cleaner, so even if you have a large class A, you’ll have plenty of product to keep your RV sparkling clean for the foreseeable future.

This top-selling RV wash and wax is also great value for money, especially given its highly economical concentrated formula. It costs less than a lot of other premium RV cleaners and can be used on poly finishes, metal, fiberglass, wood, and rubber, making this an excellent multi-surface RV cleaner that won’t damage your decals or remove your motorhome’s original shine.

Wet or Waterless RV Wash Wax Kit

Wet or Waterless RV Wash Wax Kit

Wash Wax All was originally developed over 33 years ago by Aero Cosmetics for cleaning high-performance, high-value aircraft. It can be used with or without water to remove dirt from your RV without scratching, as well as protecting and enhancing its glossy sheen.

Thanks to its water-based formula, this product is safe to use. Biodegradable, it is also alcohol and ammonia-free. Use it to save water when cleaning your motorhome. It is also highly practical – you can clean your RV whenever and wherever you need. Simply spray on, wipe clean, and rub dry for a waterless, high-sheen clean. Otherwise, for use on your wet motorhome after cleaning, simply spray on and dry.

Formulated to clean and protect aircraft from extreme environments, this product also lifts serious grime and bugs from your motorhome. Note that for sand and grit, it’s recommended that you rinse these particles off your coach first before using Wash Wax All. This product buffs dry to a non-stick, anti-static finish that contains a UV-protective coating. It won’t remove any previous wax layers, for maximum shine and protection.

This kit comes complete with a handy spray bottle containing 16 ounces of Wash Wax All, plus a one-gallon refill container of Wash Wax All. Four high-quality microfiber towels are included, so you’ll have everything you need to wash, wax and dry your RV to perfection, wherever the road may take you.

While this kit is understandably more expensive than a container of your standard RV wash and wax, it is a great solution for cleaning your RV without water. It is also an excellent way to protect your RV from the sun’s UV rays and enhance your coach’s shine.

Camco Pro-Strength Wash and Wax

Camco Pro-Strength Wash and Wax

If you are looking for an easy way to a clean and shiny RV then you’ll want to take a look at Camco’s Pro-Strength Wash and Wax . RV specialists Camco have designed this powerful cleaner to give excellent results without the need for extensive hand polishing or buffing.

Safe for all finishes, this RV wash and wax uses a blend of natural waxes and emulsifiers to shine up, clean, and protect your motorhome exterior. Note that it is not recommended for use on rubber roofs, which should be treated with a specific rubber roof cleaner. Given its high-strength cleaning power, it’s best to wear gloves when using this product to avoid any skin irritation.

Camco Pro-Strength Wash and Wax leaves your recreational vehicle with a protective shiny coating that causes water to bead, preventing streaks and dirt from forming. It is simple to use, just add two ounces per gallon of water and apply with a sponge or soft brush. Dry afterward for the best results. If your motorhome is very dirty, or you have some patches of mold, you can use this product undiluted for extra powerful cleaning results.

For a shiny coach exterior, without the need for any buffing, Camco’s Pro-Strength Wash and Wax makes a top choice. Available in one-gallon or 32-ounce formats, when used diluted it’s a highly economical product that will save you time and money compared to many other RV wash and waxes on the market.

Star Brite RV Wash & Wax

Star Brite RV Wash & Wax

Star Brite RV Wash and Wax is a popular way to get your motorhome sparkling clean, without removing any of your existing wax or polish. It is safe for all RV exterior surfaces, even rubber, and it won’t damage your decals.

Thanks to its non-toxic, biodegradable formula, you won’t have to worry about polluting nature. However, be aware that this product can be an eye irritant, so be sure to exercise caution when using it.

Its highly concentrated formula is powerful enough to remove tough dirt and grime, without damaging your protective coatings. It also extends the life of your RV wax and polish for a longer-lasting shiny finish. Its PTEF polymers enhance shine even further, as well as providing extra UV protection to help prevent fading under the sun.

This RV wash and wax is a premium version that costs quite a bit more than standard ones. Available in one-gallon or 16-ounce formats, thanks to its highly concentrated formula, you only need a few capfuls to clean your whole RV exterior. Simply mix an ounce of the product to your bucket of water, apply with a cloth, and dry afterward. For best results, use only when your motorhome is cool to the touch.

If you are looking for a highly effective RV wash and wax that is suitable for all RV exteriors, this product is an excellent choice. Not only does it clean well, it also extends the life of your wax while adding shine and sun protection. Recommended for anyone who wants to clean their RV without losing their highly polished finish.

Meguiar’s Marine/RV One Step Cleaner Wax

Meguiars RV One Step Cleaner Wax

Is your RV coach in need of a little TLC? Meguiar’s Marine/RV One Step Cleaner Wax removes light defects, such as oxidation, streaks, and spots, as well as restoring color and shine. It also adds a highly-effective protective coating to keep your RV exterior in prime condition for longer.

This liquid wax is easy to use, restoring and protecting in one easy step. Apply it in the shade, to your cool, washed, and dried coach, using a cotton towel or applicator pad. Rub it into the surface section by section, let it dry to a haze, then rub it off with a clean cloth. Note, that this product is not suitable for use on cloth, vinyl, or rubber.

Haze, minor scratches, and swirls can all be safely and effectively removed, while also restoring gloss, color, and brilliance to your fiberglass gel coat coach. Your RV will look cleaner and more uniform in appearance, as well as shinier.

One of the main advantages of this product, aside from its restorative properties, is its superior protection levels. If you are planning a trip to any coastal areas or to the sunny South, you should definitely consider using this One Step Cleaner Wax. Its long-lasting finish ensures that your motorhome is soundly protected against salt air, corrosion, and the sun’s UV rays.

Whether your RV exterior needs a little aesthetic restoration, or it’s already in great shape, but you want to make sure that it stays that way, Meguiar’s One Step Cleaner Wax is a one-of-a-kind solution that provides superior protection.

Available in 16-ounce, 32-ounce, or one-gallon formats, you will get through quite a lot on just one use. However, it does provide a long-lasting finish making it a great timesaver in the long run and well worth the extra dollars.

Thetford Premium RV Wash and Wax

Thetford Premium RV Wash and Wax

If you are looking for an easy way to clean and wax in one go, Thetford’s Premium RV Wash and Wax is a great product to remove black streaks, road film, and bird droppings, as well as protecting your RV exterior. Thanks to its shiny finish, this one-step wash and wax really will improve the look of your motorhome.

Biodegradable, non-toxic, and non-abrasive, this product is also safe to use. You won’t have to worry about your decals or expensive paint coats when using it. Recommended for use on gel-coat fiberglass painted aluminum, you can also use this premium wash and wax on your other vehicles.

Not only does Thetford’s Premium RV Wash and Wax get your coach exterior thoroughly clean, it also provides extra protection. Its shiny finish coats your RV with a non-static, water-repellent finish that protects against UV rays.

Easy to use, simply add to water, apply with a soft brush or cloth, and finish by wiping dry. Thanks to its gentle, yet powerful formula, you won’t have to worry about damaging your paint or stripping previous waxes.

Available in 32-ounce, 44-ounce, and one-gallon formats, despite its excellent cleaning performance, this RV Wash and Wax is fairly reasonably priced given its concentrated formula. Gentle, yet effective, if you’re looking for a two-in-one RV coach cleaner and protectant, Thetford is certainly a name you can trust.

Karcher Car Wash & Wax Soap for Pressure Washers

Karcher Wash & Wax for Pressure Washers

If you are looking for a wash and wax to use with your pressure washer, then you’ll want to check out Kärcher’s Car Wash and Wax Soap for Pressure Washers. Not only is this a highly effective way to get your entire RV clean in record time, its gentle formula won’t damage your paintwork or decals.

Usage is simple, dilute in a separate container, then add it to the foam nozzle container on your pressure washer. Specially formulated for use with pressure washers, it creates a thick luxuriant foam that gets to work removing grime and dirt build-up. You may also need a brush or cloth to make sure all dirt is thoroughly dislodged and removed.

Thanks to its biodegradable formula, it’s safe to use. It is also phosphate-free, making it a better choice for the environment. What’s more, it rinses away clear, without residue for a clean, shiny finish. The wax additive not only adds shine, it also protects, preventing future dirt build-up and reducing water spotting.

Unfortunately, you may find that this product’s protective layer does not last quite as long as others, although given its ease of use, you may wish to clean your RV more often with it. Available in one-quart, one-gallon, or five-gallon formats, one gallon of this highly concentrated formula makes up to 20 gallons of ready-to-use detergent.

This wash and wax cleaner is much cheaper than most RV specific versions. While it doesn’t offer as much protection as a lot of premium versions do, it’s a good value for money way to a quick and easy clean with a shiny finish.

Chemical Guys Citrus Wash and Gloss

Chemical Guys Citrus Wash and Gloss

For a squeaky clean finish with a good shine, this hyper-concentrated Citrus Wash and Gloss by the Chemical Brothers makes a highly popular choice. Thanks to its natural citrus extracts, this biodegradable formula gets to work breaking down dirt for an effortlessly clean RV coach exterior.

After rinsing and drying, it leaves a nice glossy finish. The concentrated citrus extracts go to work lifting grime, road film, and general dirt, while simultaneously lubricating your motorhome exterior, allowing the debris to be gently rinsed away without causing scratching. Free from artificial thickeners, colors, or additives, this wash and gloss cleaner has been specially formulated to give you a streak-free, shiny finish.

Hyper-concentrated, this product is marketed as diluting at 1 to 4,000 parts, with directions stating you should mix one capful to five gallons of water. This makes it great value for money, even if it is a little on the pricey side. However, be careful measuring out how much you actually use.

If you find you need more suds, you may want to increase the concentration ratio. Note that the bottle states that while you can use up to three ounces per five gallons of water, using anymore can strip the wax from your vehicle – so care is needed. This soap can also stain white plastic, so make sure you do a spot test in an inconspicuous area before using it all over.

Available in 16-ounce, one-gallon, or five-gallon containers, this is a top-selling product with a lot of satisfied users. If you are looking for a wash and wax for frequent use and it’s compatible with your RV exterior, then it could be a good choice for your motorhome.

Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Wash and Wax

Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Wash and Wax

The Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Wash and Wax has been specially formulated for use between waxes to leave your vehicle clean, shiny, and protected. Featuring a sweet fruit fragrance and a gentle PH-balanced composition, it’s a good mild choice for your RV coach.

Designed to enhance appearance and add shine to your exterior, including any plastics and trim, this wash and wax utilizes synthetic wax polymers to increase depth, shine, and gloss. Water beading is boosted and drying times reduced thanks to its super hydrophobic and SiO2 polymers that work together to produce a highly durable barrier, protecting your motorhome exterior for months at a time.

PH-balanced, this product will not damage any previous waxes or sealants, while its mild formula lifts dirt for effective cleaning. However, note that this particular product is not very foamy due to its polychemical, lubricant-like composition. At the recommended concentration for a routine wash of three ounces per gallon of water, you may struggle to get enough lubrication to avoid scratching. Also, it is not recommended for use with a foam sprayer.

If you have already cleaned your RV, this product is a good one to use in between waxes, providing long-term protection. However, it is less suitable for a standalone wash and clean as it just doesn’t foam up sufficiently to ensure that you lift away all of the dirt. Available in a 48-ounce format, it is pretty highly-priced and you’ll probably also want to look elsewhere for an additional cleaning product to complement it.

Buyer’s Guide for Buying the Best RV Wash and Wax

Struggling to find the best RV wash and wax for your motorhome? Here’s what you need to keep an eye out for when making your purchase.

Purchasing an RV wash and wax isn’t going to break the bank. While you can save a few dollars with cheaper versions, or by opting for a large five gallon pack, we recommend paying a little more for a premium product.

While there’s no assurance that paying more always gives you a better product, you don’t want to have to wash your RV more often than needed to keep up protection levels, or to be left with a substandard finish.

What’s more, given the high value of most motorhomes and the amount of time and effort it takes to get them clean, is it really worth trying to save a couple of dollars here and there?

Our advice, try out a small container from a reputable RV-specific brand. If it doesn’t work for you, put it down to experience and try another. Opting for an RV specific brand may cost you more, but it should be of a better quality and specifically formulated not to damage your exterior or any decals.

UV Protection

RVs tend to spend long hours on the road in the sun. If yours is parked outdoors, then even more reason to make sure that you choose an RV wash and wax with UV protection. UV rays can cause fading, instantly aging the look of your new RV by years.

Protecting your RV’s appearance also helps to protect the financial investment that you made in purchasing it. In our book, UV protection is a must in any RV wash and wax. Or else you’d need to fully wax with each wash and you just wouldn’t save any time.

Sure, you may live in a less than warm, sunny climate, but you can get UV damage even on cloudy days, so make sure you protect your rig if you want to keep its good looks.

Custom Graphics Protection

While you want your RV wash and wax to be highly effective at removing dirt and grime, you certainly won’t want it to remove your decals or other custom graphic features. Always make sure that your RV wash and wax provides custom graphics protection that is appropriate for your coach exterior.

Environmentally Friendly

It’s important to consider how environmentally friendly your RV wash and wax actually is. You’ll want to look out for a biodegradable version, so no matter if you get any runoff, you can be sure that it will break down and decompose into natural, non-toxic elements.

Not only does this make sense for protecting the planet and all of the natural beauty spots you love to visit when you’re RVing, but also, do you want to risk breathing in and handling a potentially hazardous product? Even more so if you have small children or pets around who could easily face serious consequences from chemical exposure.

Ease of Use

Cleaning your RV can be quite a mission, so make it as easy as possible with a wash and wax that goes on nice and easy. You’ll also want to ensure that it rinses off well too, without having to waste a load of water. Plus, while a quick dry over is to be envisaged, you won’t want to spend hours polishing it up on a quick wash and wax session.

To make getting your RV clean and protected as simple as possible, we recommend always reading through the actual usage instructions before purchasing. While manufacturers won’t hesitate to mention their quick-drying properties, a quick read through their usage recommendations usually gives you a better idea of just how much elbow grease you’ll actually have to put in.

You can always make things a little easier with a soft brush, a foam sprayer, and microfiber towels. Remember, a lot comes down to how dirty your RV is when you get started. High foaming versions tend to work best, lifting the dirt off into suspension for an easier rinse without scratching.

Abrasiveness

RV wash and waxes should not be abrasive, neither should any vehicle cleaner for that matter. You can use a soft brush with your cleaner if you feel like you’re not quite getting enough dirt off.

As we stated earlier, you need a good foaming product that will lift the dirt away from the surface of your RV, holding it in suspension. RV washes, along with all soaps and detergents contain surfactants. These are responsible for lifting dirt away from the surface and surrounding it, breaking it down into smaller particles that are easily washed away when you rinse.

If your RV wash and wax does not have sufficient levels of surfactants, it will fail to sufficiently lift and trap the dirt which can lead to scratching. In any case, most manufacturers recommend rinsing off your vehicle thoroughly before you start cleaning to ensure a minimum of grit, dirt, and sand particles remain that could cause noticeable scratches to your bodywork.

While you will want to treat your RV coach exterior every so often, being able to quickly wash and wax your motorhome can greatly extend the lifespan of your RV’s wax or sealant.

Obviously, a quick wash and wax is never going to be a replacement for a full treatment. However, a good quality product should still provide enough protection to extend your base treatment and protect your RV exterior for at least several months.

Frequently Asked Questions about RV Wash and Waxes

Maintaining the exterior of your RV is crucial for preserving its appearance and protecting it from the elements. With a wide range of RV wash and wax products available in the market, it’s natural to have questions about choosing the right one and using it effectively. In this FAQ section, we address some common queries that RV owners have regarding wash and waxes. Whether you’re a seasoned RVer or new to the world of recreational vehicles, we hope to provide you with valuable insights and answers to help you make informed decisions about caring for your RV’s exterior. From understanding the benefits of specialized RV wash and waxes to tips on application and maintenance, we’ve got you covered. Read on to find answers to frequently asked questions about RV wash and waxes.

Why should I use a specific wash and wax product for my RV instead of regular car wash products?

RVs are exposed to different environmental elements compared to regular cars, such as harsh sunlight, road grime, and pollutants. Specialized RV wash and wax products are formulated to address the unique needs of RV exteriors, providing superior cleaning power and protection against UV rays and weathering.

How often should I wash and wax my RV?

Washing and waxing frequency depends on various factors, including how often you use your RV, the climate conditions it’s exposed to, and the type of wax used. As a general guideline, washing your RV every 3-4 months and applying a fresh coat of wax twice a year is recommended. However, if you frequently travel in dusty or heavily polluted areas, you may want to wash and wax more frequently.

Can I use any wash and wax product on my RV?

While some car wash products may work on RVs, it’s best to use products specifically designed for RVs. RV wash and waxes are formulated to be gentle on the surfaces of your RV, while effectively removing dirt and grime. Additionally, they provide added UV protection and help maintain the finish of your RV.

How do I choose the best RV wash and wax product for my needs?

Consider the following factors when choosing an RV wash and wax product:

  • Compatibility with your RV’s surface (fiberglass, gel coat, aluminum, etc.).
  • Cleaning power and ability to remove dirt, stains, and black streaks.
  • UV protection and long-lasting wax properties.
  • Ease of application and rinsing.
  • Reputation and customer reviews of the product.

Can I use a pressure washer to wash my RV?

While pressure washers can be used to clean RVs, caution must be exercised. Use a low-pressure setting (under 2000 PSI) and ensure that the nozzle is kept at a safe distance to avoid damage to the RV’s exterior or seals. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations for using a pressure washer on your specific RV model.

Are wash and wax products safe for decals and graphics on my RV?

Most RV wash and waxes are safe for use on decals and graphics. However, it’s always a good idea to test the product on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure there is no adverse reaction. Additionally, avoid applying excessive pressure or scrubbing vigorously on decals to prevent damage.

Can I wax my RV in direct sunlight?

It is generally recommended to avoid waxing your RV in direct sunlight or when the surface is hot. High temperatures can cause the wax to dry too quickly, making it difficult to buff off and potentially leaving streaks. Choose a shady area or a time of day when the RV surface is cooler for best results.

How long does a wax job typically last on an RV?

The longevity of a wax job depends on various factors, including the quality of the product, weather conditions, and how frequently you use your RV. In general, a good-quality wax should last around 3-6 months, but it’s advisable to monitor your RV’s appearance and reapply wax as needed.

Can I use RV wash and wax products on other vehicles?

Yes, many RV wash and waxes can be used on other vehicles, such as cars, trucks, and boats. However, always read the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure compatibility and follow any specific guidelines provided.

Remember, the above information is general guidance, and it’s essential to refer to the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer of the RV wash and wax products you choose to use.

Consider your RV as a superhero, warding off adversaries such as bird droppings, road tar, and winter salt. Regular cleaning is its secret weapon – with particular attention to washing your RV awning .

Nature’s Impact on Your RV Exterior

Nature can be harsh on our vehicles, especially when they’re parked outside for long periods. Elements like bird droppings, road tar, and salt can wreak havoc on your RV’s surfaces.

Potential Damage from Nature and How to Fight Back

  • Cleaning off bird droppings immediately prevents paint discoloration due to their acidic content.
  • Removing road tar ensures smooth running and prevents premature wear on parts like tires.
  • Rinsing off the salt after winter trips is crucial to prevent corrosion on metal components, especially the undercarriage.

Now, let’s dive into how to effectively tackle these cleaning tasks without causing any further damage. Stay tuned for the next section.

Key Takeaway: A successful RV wash begins with thoughtful preparation and a solid understanding of your vehicle’s exterior needs. This includes selecting an optimal washing location with easy water access, good drainage, and shade to prevent sun-induced soap spots, as well as choosing the right cleaning solution based on your owner’s manual or opting for a mild car washing soap.

Preparing for Your RV Wash

When it comes to keeping your RV spick and span, a little planning goes a long way.

An RV wash that shines starts with proper preparation and an understanding of your vehicle’s exterior needs.

Picking the Perfect Spot for Washing

Choose a primo location with easy access to water and good drainage. Park on solid ground near a water spigot, and if you can, find some shade to avoid those pesky soap spots caused by the sun.

Selecting an Appropriate Cleaning Solution

Now it’s time to choose the right cleaning solution. Check your owner’s manual for recommendations, or if you’re feeling adventurous, a mild car washing soap usually does the trick. And remember, a little research goes a long way.

5 Essential Supplies for an Effective RV Wash

Gearing up for a thorough RV wash? You’ll need the right tools.

  • A pressure washer or water hose – This is your first line of defense against dirt and grime. A  pressure washer  can blast away stubborn stains, while a standard garden hose works well for lighter cleaning tasks.
  • A sponge or mitt – This helps distribute soap evenly across your RV’s exterior. Remember to use one that’s soft enough not to scratch the paint.
  • Easy access to all parts – You’ll want to reach every nook and cranny, including the rubber roof atop. If you have a rubber roof, it requires special care with a specialized rubber roof cleaner to maintain its longevity and prevent damage from harsh elements.
  • An RV-specific wash-and-wax product – After washing, it’s time to wax. Opt for an RV-specific product that offers protection and a deep clean effect.
  • A microfiber cloth – Finally, dry off using a microfiber cloth. They’re excellent at absorbing moisture and preventing those pesky soap spots after rinsing.

Remember, you can find these supplies at any local RV dealership that offers RV services.

Now we’re ready. In our next section, let’s dive into how exactly you should go about giving your beloved home-on-wheels its much-needed bath.

Key Takeaway: To ensure an effective RV wash, five essential tools are recommended: a pressure washer or water hose for powerful dirt and grime removal; a soft sponge or mitt to evenly distribute soap; easy access to all parts of your vehicle, including the use of specialized rubber roof cleaner if needed; an RV-specific wash-and-wax product for post-wash protection and deep cleaning; and a microfiber cloth for drying off and preventing soap spots. These supplies can be found at any local RV dealership offering services.

Step-by-Step Guide to Washing Your RV Exterior Regularly

Ready for an RV wash? Let’s get started.

  • The first step is simple: rinse away loose dirt and grime with a pressure washer or hose. It’s like giving your RV a refreshing shower.
  • Now, let’s suds up your vehicle.
  • Grab a soft brush or mitt and your favorite cleaning solution. If you have a rubber roof, don’t forget to use a specialized rubber roof cleaner. Safety first.
  • Begin scrubbing from the top and continue in a downward direction. This way, any dirty water will flow down without messing up the areas you’ve already cleaned. It’s all about that downward flow, baby.
  • Rinse off the soap thoroughly. We don’t want any soap spots, do we? Those pesky spots happen when soapy water dries before being rinsed off completely – bye-bye, soap spots.
  • Feeling adventurous? How about adding a wax application after the rinse? A quality wash-and-wax product will give your RV’s exterior a shiny new look and protect it from the elements – double win.

Remember, consistency is key. Regularly following these steps will keep your mobile home looking its best and extend its lifespan. Your RV will thank you.

The RV wash and wax should not have ingredients like fillers, extenders, or any harmful substances. Choose the products which are labeled biodegradable as you might spill some.

Convenience

It’s easy enough to go out and buy a car wash kit or just go with a soap that you have on hand. But if you want something that will give you peace of mind, then you should consider using a convenient wash and waxes for RV. They’re designed for automotive surfaces, making them perfect for any vehicle, including RVs. If you’re still unsure what kind of product is right for you, here are a few tips on choosing the best convenient wash and waxes for an RV.

1) Only use products that are made for vehicles.

2) Read reviews from other users to get more details about how well the product works before buying it.

3) Look at the ingredients list to see if they include any items that could damage your paint or bodywork.

4) Be wary of cheap brands since they may contain harsh chemicals that could strip away the protective coating on your vehicle.

5) Stick to tried-and-true brands such as Turtle Wax, and Mothers, who have been in business for many years. Always do their research before introducing a new product line.

6) Be aware of your budget since options are available for every price point depending on how much you plan to spend and whether you plan on doing this.

UV Protection is a must-have if you want to keep your RV looking newer for longer. With so many options, it can be challenging to choose the best UV protection. But with these some tips, you’ll be able to make a more thoughtful decision about what wash and wax products are best for you against UV rays.

Ability to offer protection to your RV’s custom graphics

To protect your vehicle’s custom graphics, use a product designed specifically for that purpose. Some wash-and-wax products offer protection against UV radiation. It will keep the graphics on your RV looking bright and new. If you’re looking to get some of those spots out of those vinyl graphics, you’ll want to use an exterior wash such as Meguiar’s Gold Class Wipe-On Wax.

These products are designed to safely remove tough dirt and grime from exterior surfaces without damaging them. The sealant can apply in less than five minutes by hand or machine, depending on the desired application thickness, and depth of shine for today’s modern waxes.

While most consumers don’t give too much thought to what they put on their car, it is crucial to consider these factors when choosing a wash and wax product for your RV.

A quality car care system will not only enhance the appearance of your vehicle but also prolong its life with proper maintenance.

An excellent way to maintain your car’s pristine condition is to have a professional detail service come over once or twice per year. Like other vehicles, preventative maintenance is vital to save money on costly repairs down the road.

Washing and Waxing Your Recreational Vehicle (RV): A Comprehensive Process in Different Steps

best wash and wax for rv

If you own an RV, you know that it takes more than just regular car washing and waxing to keep your rig good and running well. Luckily, there are unique products and techniques. You can use them to clean your vehicle and protect its surface from the elements so that it looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside. Below are different steps to wash and wax your recreational vehicle (RV) to keep your home on wheels looking great all year.

Step 1: Check Tire Pressure Washer

Before washing, it’s essential to check your tire pressure and ensure your tires are properly inflated. If they need air, take care of that first. You can use a tire gauge to measure the air in each tire. You want all the tires to have roughly the same amount of air inside them so that the weight is even across all four tires, which is crucial for safe driving.

If you’re unsure about the correct tire pressure, consult your vehicle owner’s manual or ask a qualified service technician. For example, if one of your tires has less than 25% air left in it and the others have over 25% air left in them, this will be considered under-inflated. The best way to tell if a tire has low enough pressure is by touching it with one hand and pressing it with another.

Step 2: Prepare Your RV

Take the below steps to prepare your RV for washing and waxing:

  • Put your RV in storage mode. This means you should close all the windows, turn off all the appliances, and ensure no food or water is inside.
  • Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on the floor to neutralize odors. If you have a gas stove or propane heater, ensure they are turned off. You should also be disconnected from your RV’s power source before storing it for an extended period.
  • To wash the outside of your RV, use a hose with soap that won’t damage the paint job.
  • Rinse the entire exterior with clean water until it is free from soap residue.
  • To wax your RV, use a high-quality carnauba wax or synthetic sealant. It will last longer and provide more protection than waxes made from petroleum products.

Step 3: Complete Process

You can complete this process of washing and waxing an RV by the below steps:

  • Scrub the tires with a brush or a sturdy sponge.
  • Dirt, sand, and other particles can get stuck in the treads of your tires and scratch your RV’s paint as you drive. Scrubbing them off will help prevent this from happening.
  • Clean the roof with a high-pressure hose to remove dirt, dust, bird droppings, tree sap, and other debris accumulating on your RV between washes.
  • Spray down the side panels of your RV, front and rear bumpers, and wheel wells using the same mixture above.
  • Rinse everything off until it runs clear, then dry it off entirely with towels or a chamois cloth for the best results.
  • Avoid drying items while they’re still wet because moisture could be trapped underneath and cause mildew to form.
  • Wash the windows, headlights, taillights, grills, and exhaust system with a gentle cleaner like Bon Ami or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. This will give these surfaces a nice sheen without scratching or etching.
  • The next step is inside! Vacuum the interior carpet, upholstery, headliner, dashboard, trunk mat, and floor mats before starting to wash.
  • Remove any crumbs or spills by vacuuming or wiping with a damp cloth.
  • Wash the interior walls and ceiling with a scrubber or soft brush if necessary.

Types of RV Wash and Waxes

best wash and wax for rv

If you have an RV, you know the value of protecting it from the elements. If you’re using your RV regularly, washing it regularly should be at the top of your to-do list. Of course, if you’re not using your vehicle that often, doing a wash and wax every few months might be enough. Either way, there are different types of RV wash and waxes to choose from that will offer varying levels of protection depending on the frequency at which you use your camper van or motor home.

Spray-on Wash and Wax

Spray-on wash and wax is the most popular type, but it’s not always the best option. For example, if you have a large or older vehicle with faded paint, applying spray-on wash and wax can make your paint look dull. If you need more protection for your vehicle, opt for a liquid wash and wax instead. Liquid washes give more shine and protection. Liquid soap will also help to remove dirt from your vehicle’s surface. It also gives it a fresh-from-the-carwash feeling!

In addition, it’ll do wonders in removing any residual oils on your paint job caused by everyday driving conditions. Opting for a good quality soap may be expensive, but it’ll be worth every penny when you see the results on your vehicle! With this type of wash and wax, you don’t want to use anything other than water. All in all, no detergent or dishwashing liquids are needed because they will strip away the coating on top of your paint job.

Liquids Wash and Wax Products

There are a variety of different liquids that you can use on your RV. It is important to know that what type you need before purchasing is essential because not all liquids will work for all jobs. Some people like using soap and water, others prefer liquid wax, while some prefer spray wax. There are also cleaners, protectants, polishes, and sealants to choose from. The decision comes down to personal preference based on the environment where the vehicle is stored and used.

Also, depending on how often the vehicle will be exposed to weather extremes such as rain or snowfall. If it is left outside in these conditions more than occasionally, heavier protection may be needed. You should consult the owner’s manual or contact the dealer when unsure which product is right for you. However, products with a high-gloss finish will likely have lower UV resistance and need frequent touch-ups.

Conversely, products with less gloss (usual will resist sun damage better but require a lot more time and effort for application. For example, if you apply liquefied wax once every year or two months, liquid might suffice for your needs.

Pastes Wash and Wax

Washing your car doesn’t have to be an all-day affair, nor is it difficult and time-consuming. Instead, you can use Pastes Wash & Wax to clean your car and make it look new again quickly. This simple paste is specially formulated for today’s vehicles. It eliminates the need to scrub at your car’s or truck’s surface and causing damage that makes cleaning the car harder in the long run! In just five minutes per week, you can use Pastes Wash & Wax to protect from UV rays while you enjoy a shine that lasts.

Eco Friendly

Washing your RV with eco-friendly products is a great way to protect your investment. Eco-friendly products are gentler on the environment, making them safer for the planet. Eco-friendly cleaners provide added protection against rust. It can be a problem if you’re not careful with your regular wash routine.

One of the best eco-friendly cleaners for RVs is soapnuts. These small brown nuts contain saponin. Saponin is an organic compound with natural cleaning properties when activated in water. To activate the saponin, you must boil four or five soapnuts per gallon of water. The lather will easily clean away dirt and grime without chemicals.

When rinsing off the soapnut lather, use fresh water instead of detergent. Be sure to add one cup of vinegar per quart of rinse water to remove soap residues and bring out the shine after washing your RV!

Biodegradable Ingredients RV washes and Waxes

RV wash and wax products come in various formulas that use biodegradable ingredients. You should always read the label on the product you are considering using to ensure that it is a safe, non-toxic formula for your vehicle. Always be mindful of any citrus or other oils. This is because these can damage plastics, rubber, vinyl, and other surfaces that could be located on or near the body of your vehicle.

Be sure to keep some air freshener around because all types of soap will leave an unpleasant odor as they dry. A mild odiferous cleaner can help if you are without any air freshener. Use sparingly so that the smell does not become too strong.

One way to tell when your RV needs more than just a wash and wax is by looking at dirt streaks, hard water spots, or stains from unknown substances. It may also need more attention if it has been sitting idle for an extended period and no longer feels slippery when rubbed across its surface.

Do RV Wash and Waxes Work on All Surfaces?

It all varies on the product you purchase. Most of the time, such products are perfect for specific surfaces. Make sure to read the product description while you buy the RV wash and waxes.

How Often Do You Need to Wash Your RV With an RV Wash and Wax?

If you plan on maintaining the glorious shine of your RV, then wash it regularly and use the RV wash and wax. According to the experts, it’s best to wash an RV after every six months or twice yearly based on your purchase.

Clean your RV regularly as the dirt and all grime buildup over the RV, so you need to perform a thorough cleaning. You don’t need to stick to the six-month cleaning; if the RV is dirty, you need to maintain a perfect shiny finish.

Not only dirt, but RV’s are also prone to issues such as UV rays, tree sap, insects, road grime, acid rain, and bird droppings.

You might end up with massive damage if you leave RV untreated, such as discoloration, corrosion, staining, and chemical spotting. Using a top-notch quality RV wash and wax can simply help in getting rid of such issues.

What Are Some Other Tips for Washing Your RV Exteriors?

  • Other tips for washing RV exterior includes the following:

  • Spray some water on the RV exterior with the hose. This helps in getting rid of dust.

  • Avoid using high water pressure and hot water over the RV exterior.
  • Use the sprayer nozzle from a distance of a foot and a half.
  • If you are cleaning RV metallic parts, it’s best to use RV wash and wax with a low abrasive level.
  • Avoid using the wrong products as they can cause corrosion or rust.

Can You Use Car Wash and Wax on an RV?

You can use a car wash and wax on an RV if you have a painted one. However, if the RV parts are made from fiberglass or come with a gel coating, you need to use a special type of RV wax and wash.

If you don’t use the right wax and wash, it can lead to oxidation which can cause dullness or a chalky effect over fiberglass.

Car wash and wax on an RV leaves a perfect protective layer that prevents wear and tear plus weather effects. The wax prevents sun damage, dirt, and water.

Our Methodology

The RV waxes I’ve chosen are those that meet three key metrics : Ease of application, the ability to add shine to fiberglass exteriors, and protection against the outdoor elements. These waxes were chosen from the wide selection of options available online, both for cars and for RVs. I sought out those that were best suited for RV exteriors and compared them to one another in the kinds of protection offered and the level of gloss or shine achieved once applied. To get a sense of how long each wax lasted (and how easy they were to apply), I looked at users' reviews and use cases.

Best RV Wax Reviews & Recommendations

Best RV Wax Overall

Covers large surface areas

Highly water-repellent

Formulated for fiberglass

Won’t scratch delicate exteriors

Dries really quickly in certain temperatures

Can be sensitive to the environment in which it’s applied

Don't let the picture of a sleek boat fool you: Meguiar's Premium Marine Wax goes on all things fiberglass, including large RVs. In fact, this wax adds an extra layer of water-repellant protection that rivals and beats many car waxes on the market today. Since it's specifically formulated for fiberglass exteriors, it’s also easy to apply to delicate surfaces without worrying about damage. Each bottle includes enough liquid to cover the surface area of most RVs. By far, the standout feature of this wax is the water-repellent capabilities it has. The protective coating sheds and beads water in rainy or snowy conditions. The wax buffs well (either by hand or power buffer) to a nice shine.

When it comes to working with the wax, application is relatively easy, but you may find it’s a bit sensitive to the surrounding environment. Like most waxes, application in direct sunlight isn't recommended. In fact, the wax's drying time greatly varies depending on the outside temperature; it has a sweet spot of around 60 degrees for a good, workable drying time. Anything higher makes it dry too fast; anything too low makes it difficult to apply and remove properly.

Best RV Wax Value

Wash and wax combo product

Plenty of solution for multiple coats

Little scrubbing or elbow grease required

Not as great as a dedicated wax

Can streak and water spot

TR Industries' Gel-Gloss RV Wash and Wax works quickly, and you get a lot of value for a small price tag. The formula contains a fiberglass-friendly washing solution mixed with a carnauba-based wax. Combined with the 128-ounce bottle, this wash-and-wax combo gives you plenty of liquid to tackle most RVs, with some left over. As a wash-and-wax combo, the Gel-Gloss is all about speed and convenience. The liquid suds onto the fiberglass surface and can be rinsed off with water. There isn't much scrubbing required to get dirt and debris off of the surface. The finished coat decently protects the fiberglass against water UV radiation, and light oxidation.

While the results are good, it's no substitute for dedicated waxes that offer a better shine and longer life. You may notice some minor streaks and water spots in direct sunlight. It's labeled as a no-spot cleaner, but spots can develop in sunny conditions if you don't give it a hand in drying with a microfiber towel or cloth.

Honorable Mention

Includes wax plus polish and oxidation remover

Restores fiberglass exteriors

Tackles obvious signs of damage on RVs

Tough on stubborn dirt

Steps have to be followed carefully

Time-consuming application process

Meguiar's Fiberglass Restoration Kit is the type of combination product to choose when you need to give some TLC to your RV. The included cleaning products are designed to restore a fiberglass finish that can't be cured by water and soap alone. In total, the kit comes with three separate bottles: an oxidation remover, a polish, and Meguiar's Pure Wax. The 16-ounce bottle of liquid wax is fairly easy to apply to fiberglass surfaces and goes on quickly to cover the large surfaces of an RV. Suitable for hand or power tool applications, the wax doesn't leave much in terms of noticeable black streaks or spots when properly removed. The wax dries to a haze before removal, so a quick dry test (running your finger over it to see if it lifts off) will be necessary.

Combined with the other two 16-ounce bottles in the kit, the wax does a good job of restoring discolored and stained fiberglass surfaces, but it can be difficult to get the best results if the three steps aren't done correctly. The process is very time-consuming if done by hand, but it’s the best result; buffers or polishers don’t achieve the same finish.

Best All-in-One RV Wax

CarGuys Hybrid Wax Sealant

CarGuys Hybrid Wax Sealant

Glossy, showroom-quality results

No-streak, no-residue formula

Protects against UV rays, dirt, water spotting, and more

Safe for fiberglass

Wet, glossy shine can disappear quickly

Expensive, especially if reapplied frequently

CarGuys offers an all-in-one sealant that works to replace waxes and polishes. It's an easy solution that allows you to quickly clean and maintain your vehicle, whether it's a car or an RV. What makes this product stand out is its powerful and safe formula. The sealant can be applied to all surfaces, without streaks or residues. It spreads and wipes off easily, so you can finish the cleanup quickly. You'll notice glossy showroom results right after the application. Even more importantly, the protective coat will stay on for quite a while, keeping your vehicle safe from UV rays, dirt, water, and other harmful elements and substances.

What can be an issue with this product is the overall longevity. The sealant tends to lose the wet shine quickly, requiring frequent reapplication. The sealant also might leave some streaks on the glass, so make sure to wipe it off carefully after the application.

Best Water-Based RV Wax

Car Wax Kit by Aero Cosmetics

Car Wax Kit by Aero Cosmetics

Bulk product covers many washes and waxes

Anti-static UV-protective coating

Alcohol- and ammonia-free

Little goes a long way

Requires a lot of elbow grease to apply

Can leave a residue on glass

This is one of those handy wash kits that doesn't even require you to use water for the cleanups. It’s a rather versatile set you can use on all kinds of cars, RVs, boats, and other vehicles. The kit includes two bottles of Wash Wax ALL and four microfiber towels. It's specially designed to clean and protect the surfaces, leaving your vehicles with a glossy finish. The wash wax doesn't only remove water, dirt, and grime; it also leaves a protective coating. Another benefit is the water-based formula, free from alcohol and ammonia and safe for skin as well as car paint and glass. Furthermore, a little of the liquid goes a long way.

The main drawback of this product is it requires some extra elbow grease. You'll probably have to use some extra effort to buff it clean, especially on the glass. It might leave an oily residue on windows, so you might need to wipe them several times for flawless results.

Best Durable RV Wax

Collinite 845 Insulator Wax

Collinite 845 Insulator Wax

Easy to apply and wipe away

Wet, glossy finish

Protects against UV rays, rain, dust, and more

Sized for portability

Thick formula

Can leave residue on some paint colors

Collinite offers an efficient and durable wax for all types of vehicles. Thanks to the powerful yet safe formula, you can apply it to different surfaces without worrying about damage. Even better, you'll achieve a wet, glossy finish with this wax and take pride in the aesthetic of your vehicle. The Collinite wax is easy to apply and wipe off. You can use it to quickly wax RVs and other large vehicles. The wax is super efficient in removing dirt, dust, water, and all kinds of stains from vehicle surfaces. It even leaves a durable protective coat that repels UV rays, rain, snow, dust, grime, and more. All in all, the Collinite lasts.

However, the thick formula might come as a drawback as well. Although it should liquify in the sun or a tub of warm water, some users had difficulties with that. They noticed the product stays thick and is difficult to wipe off. Also, depending on the paint color, the wax might leave behind some residue.

Best Restorative RV Wax

3M Marine Restorer & Wax

3M Marine Restorer & Wax

Cleans, polishes, waxes, and restores

Versatile for many vehicles

Removes heavy oxidation

Protects exterior after application

Can be difficult to pour

The 3M Marine restorer and wax is one of those versatile products you can use on all kinds of surfaces and achieve showroom results. Although mainly designed for boats and RVs, the product can be used on cars, trucks, and ATVs as well. What makes this product stand out is a unique formula that contains a rubbing compound and a wax. Thanks to this mixture, you can use it to clean, polish, and wax the surface, enhancing shine and paint. It also works to remove heavy oxidation, which is especially important for those storing RVs. The 3M Marine restorer and wax also leaves a durable protective coat on your vehicle's surface.

However, the main issue with this product is the price. The wax comes in 16- and 32-ounce bottles that prove to be rather expensive. If you're looking for an inexpensive cleaning option, this is not an ideal choice. Another minor inconvenience could be the fact that the liquid is sometimes difficult to pour out of the bottle.

Best Easy Application RV Wax

Star Brite One-Step Cleaner Wax

Star Brite One-Step Cleaner Wax

Suitable for fiberglass, paint, and metals

Cleans, maintains, and protects

Can eliminate stubborn dirt, debris, and stains

Easy spray-and-wipe application

Not great for heavy oxidation

Glossy finish doesn’t last long

The Star Brite cleaner is specially formulated for fiberglass, metals, and painted surfaces. It's ideal for RVs as well as for other vehicle types. You can use it not only for general cleaning, but also for maintaining and protecting surfaces. The product restores shine and paint and cleans and protects the surface in just one step. It resolves dirt, debris, and stubborn stains. It can also repel water, UV rays, and other harmful elements in the long run. Additionally, the product proves to be rather efficient in preventing fading and oxidation. It's also important to mention that the product is easy to use. All you need to do is to spray and wipe off the liquid, making the surface very shiny.

However, keep in mind that it’s not ideal for cleaning heavy oxidation. It's primarily a maintenance product that will prevent further damage. Also, you might need to reapply frequently because the glossy effect doesn't last for very long.

Best Heavy-Duty RV Wax

PRO Car Beauty Products RV, Boat & Aircraft Wax

PRO Car Beauty Products RV, Boat & Aircraft Wax

Removes scratches, oxidation, and buildup

Effective on longtime stains

Protects against water, UV rays, and oxidation

Suitable for all kinds of materials

Tough to wipe off

Somewhat expensive

If you're looking for a heavy-duty cleaner that will help you remove persistent stains and residue, you might want to check out this wax. It's a highly efficient product that removes scratches, oxidation, and other buildups. You also get to use it on all kinds of vehicles, including RVs, boats, trucks, and more. The product contains carnauba wax and polymer sealers that not only clean, but also protect the surface from water, UV rays, and oxidation, making it shiny and good-looking all over again. Furthermore, you can use the wax on fiberglass, chrome, aluminum, and many other materials.

The main drawback of this product might be the application. Although it's easy to spread the liquid on the surface, it might be challenging to wipe it off. The wax is also a little pricey, especially considering the fact you'll need to use more liquid for a thorough cleanup.

Our Verdict on RV Waxes

When it comes to top-tier RV wax, you can’t go wrong with Meguiar's M6332 Premium Wax . This product delivers solid shine while also imparting lasting protection against all kinds of outdoor dirt, weather, and debris. If value is your biggest priority, TR Industries Gel-Gloss Wash and Wax is another top product pick. This dual-purpose wash and wax cleans while maintaining your RV’s exterior.

What to Consider When Buying RV Wax

Before you break out any old wax hanging out in your garage, here’s what you need to look for in a top-tier product. Use these details to find a wax that’ll protect your RV’s exterior and restore its former gloss and shine.

Types of RV Wax

Liquid waxes make up the bulk of most RV fiberglass waxes. Coming in large bottles, liquid wax is fairly easy to apply in controlled amounts over large surface areas. They also tend to respond well to both hand and power applications, making this type extremely versatile in matching your personal preferences on waxing your RV.

Paste waxes sit on the opposite end of the waxing spectrum compared to liquid types. Pastes, especially carnauba waxes, are harder and can be more difficult to apply by hand. For RV use, they are less common but remain a good choice if you prefer to avoid liquid and spray-on solutions.

The least common type of wax for RV use, spray-on waxes are generally the most convenient to apply. Since bottle sizes tend to be small, and the spray-on action leads to a lot of overspray and wasted wax, they aren't the most economical when it comes to waxing an RV. In other words, expect to buy a few extra bottles of spray if you want to use this type of wax.

RV Wax Pricing

You can find small, budget-friendly RV waxes for under $20. They aren’t the shiniest or most protective, but they do the trick. If you’re looking for higher-quality wax, you can expect to spend between $20 and $45. And if you want to buy a good wax in bulk so you have enough for multiple coats, you’ll spend $50 or more.

Q: What kind of wax should you use on an RV?

A: Because most RV exteriors feature fiberglass, you’ll want to choose a wax that’s less abrasive. Look for gentle formulas, whether you’re going for a paste or liquid, that promise glossy shine and protection. You can treat the exterior of your RV like you would your car, but it’s better to skip any wax that includes potentially abrasive ingredients.

Q: How often should you wax your RV?

A: Try to wax your RV twice each year, or every six months.

Q: Is there a difference between marine wax and RV or car wax?

A: While marine wax and wax for an RV are both great for fiberglass exteriors, there are key differences that may make RV waxes better for RVs and marine waxes better for boats. In general, marine waxes are formulated to offer protection against water and other marine elements, while RV and auto waxes are formulated to protect against UV rays, dirt, and other road issues.

Review of the Best RV Wax Products

The most important part of the review is the following section, we go into detail about some of the best RV wax products currently on the market. We discuss their key features, what makes them unique and maybe what makes them not so unique. The following section should help you in finding the best match for your needs.

Meguiar’s M6332

Meguiar's Flagship Premium Marine Wax, Boat Wax and Polish, 32 Fl. Oz

We start off with the best overall wax on the market. This 32 oz bottle of RV wax is useful in providing the highest grade UV protection on the market. It makes it easy to remove oxidation, scratches and helps with any discolored patches.

If your RV is looking a bit worse for wear, it’s easy just to apply some of this special formula to bring it back to its old vibrant self. This RV wax from Meguiar’s provides you with long-lasting polymer protection, making it easy for you to apply and simply forget about any outside elements that could damage your RV.

This product can work on any material but is best used on fiberglass RV’s to give it that nice glossy finish.

Bottom Line

This RV wax is top notch, and it wouldn’t be number one if it weren’t a great wax. The main features are the economic value of a 32 oz bottle, which will give you with several coats of protection.

The UV protection and long-lasting polymer provide you with that piece of mind, your RV will look brand new for years down the line if kept protected . It’s useful for blending out all those scratches and discolored patches making this a fantastic product for any RV owner.

The only problems with this product is that it can be quite expensive because of the reputation the brand has built. That said, I’m sure most people would be happy to pay for quality.

Also, with this model is that it contains petroleum distillates which can create a greasy feel and look on your RV, a significant factor in why many people stay away from this product. That said, we like this RV wax and we use it, so we recommend it.

RV Wax and Wash Buyer’s Guide

Here we offer all the information you need on RV wax, including what the important things consider before getting some. There’s also an FAQ section on all things RV wax, so by the end of the guide you’ll be well equipped with the knowledge of which to get…

Aspects to Consider Before Buying RV Wax

When searching for the best RV wax, you’ll have to consider a range of different advantages and disadvantages in using particular products or brands. There will be many questions regarding the qualities of the substance you’ll ask yourself. The following section discusses in detail the multiple points you should think about and will guide you in understanding how different products can maintain your RV.

All RV wax should have some level of UV protection. This protection will help combat discoloration from the sun’s UV rays, ensuring a long-lasting look for the RV. Exteriors of most RV’s will be made from fiberglass, you’ll be able to find special fiberglass wax. This special protection will block any damage these rays can cause.

RV Material

There are multiple RV wax options currently on the market that provide added protection to certain RVs depending on the materials used. The best thing to do is find one that was specifically designed for your RV material. This could be fiberglass or aluminum, and there are also different variations of these materials also. However, if you don’t want to go through all the trouble, a standard RV choice should work to protect most materials.

Weather Resistant/Durable

For your RV wax to work, you’ll need to ensure that it can survive a decent amount of time and even the elements. It would provide no help if it rains after adding a coat of wax and it gets washed away. Buying one that will last a decent length of time will be a huge benefit. It’s time-consuming enough to wax your RV, never mind waxing it every few days.

What is RV Wax Used For?

Simply put, it’s used to protect your RV against any scratches, UV light damage and ensure the quality of your exterior was of the same standard when you bought it. By providing your RV with this extra layer of defense, you’ll be safe from discoloration and scratches.

Wax and wash an RV

Types of RV Wax

You will find multiple RV wax products made for different exterior materials. Most of them are made for fiberglass as this is the most common material used to build RVs. Most RV waxes are made from Carnauba wax and contain a polymer and other resins. The one thing you’ll want to avoid is wax that includes petroleum distillates, these can leave greasy residues after application.

Liquid RV wax is the most often used in the industry. You can get it in huge bottles, and more appropriate for RV living and storing. With liquid wax, application is quite simple, and it can be used for both hand and power application to your equipment.

Paste wax for RV exteriors are more time-consuming to apply than liquid waxes, which makes them less popular among RV owners. The main advantage of using RV paste wax is that you get to thoroughly check your RVs surface from top to bottom while waxing. Because of this, some people choose to use a paste wax once or twice a year to ensure a meticulous wax job.

The following topic will discuss the two different variations, the spray bottle and the container.

Using a sprayer bottle is probably the easier way in terms of application. You simply just spray the patches that need some work. This method can be quite time consuming for larger RVs or if you’re trying to cover your entire RV in wax. If you’re intending to top up your RV protection, this would be the best method, but to protect the entire RV, you’d be better using a container.

Containers will always carry more wax treatment than spray bottles. Like we mentioned previously, this method will take you far less time to apply, so it’s better to use this method mainly to apply the wax over the entire RV. Containers will often be more expensive than the spray bottles due to their larger quantities. There aren’t any differences to these two types, and there aren’t many variations in the ingredients of waxes used by multiple brands either, they tend to all use the same stuff.

People Also Ask – RV Wax FAQs

This section will help anyone that doesn’t understand the different terms or processes like applying the wax or how long you need to wait until you apply it again. It might take you a while to get the hang of it, but you’ll soon get there.

Should you wax your RV roof?

Waxing provides a UV-protective layer for your roof. Aim to do this every few months or at a minimum, once or twice a year. If time is a constraint, consider booking an RV wash and wax service appointment for professional assistance.

How often should you wax your RV?

Assuming you use your RV throughout the summer, you should be cleaning your RV and applying your wax every few weeks to ensure a high level of protection against UV light and possible scratches. If you only use it throughout the summer and it sits idle for months at a time, you should only have to apply the wax before you settle down and when you’re departing for your summer travels.

Can you wax RV decals?

You can wax decals, most RV wax products can be used on multiple RV materials. You should always check first though if the wax can be applied to lettering or decals. You could ruin your RV if you choose to wax them and the wax turns out to be harmful to it.

What is the best way to apply RV wax?

Applying RV wax by hand would provide some decent results. However, this would take too long, and there’s technology out there like a dual-action buffer that can give you better results in half the time. If you’re using a spray bottle, it will make more sense to just use your hand and a clean, soft cloth.

Can you wax fiberglass?

You can use any generic brand to wax fiberglass, or you could buy a special wax formula, built specially for fiberglass RVs. You will find specially designed waxes for most other materials too, there aren’t many variations in the ingredients.

Can you use car wax on trailer?

If your RV is painted, you can use regular car wax, but if it has areas with fiberglass or gel coating, use the RV wax we mentioned above. And, it’s very important to keep these areas cleaned and waxed.

What is better polisher or buffer?

There’s no distinction between the two terms, as ‘buffing’ and ‘polishing’ are synonymous. Thus, a buffer is essentially a polisher. Certain polishers have been specifically designed for final polishing since the 1950s and are highly regarded in the detailing industry.

RV Wash and Wax Treatments Protect Your RV for Time

RV wash and wax, or just RV wax helps protect your vehicle from all the elements nature throws at it. You should look after and wax the exterior every 4-8 weeks, depending on the environments you goto.

Some products protect better against certain elements, but most RV wash and wax products are made from the same ingredients and don’t offer many variations, although some are specially made for different materials.

If in doubt, just buy a generic RV wax. It can be a pain when trying to pick the wax and you don’t know what you’re looking for. Hopefully, this review has helped guide you in finding what you need.

How we chose the best wash & wax formulas.

When looking for the best wash and wax cleaning products, we wanted to find non-abrasive solutions that will work no matter what type of material your RV is and are easy to apply and use while lasting for a long time. Some leave a glossy finish, they all remove dirt and grime, and we wanted to find formulas that were long lasting and will remove black streaks.

The benefit of having a wash and wax in one is you can clean your RV in one step, which saves a lot of time, and keeping your RV waxed helps to protect it from UV rays, dirt and grime, and keeps the gel coat safe and glossy. Here is our list of high quality wash and wax options for any rig!

How to Clean & Wax Your RV Easily

The best way to wash your RV quickly and easily is to find an rv washing station near you. Any car wash with giant bays will fit the bill. You can also wash your RV at home in your driveway, just make sure to have a lot of water and a huge bucket and scrubber ready to start applying your wash and wax product.

Start from the top of your camper on the RV roof to use a soft scrubber on a stick to gently wash and rinse the roof.

Then, move to the sides, cleaning one side at a time, making sure to remove any black streaks as you go and being careful not to scratch or damage the paint or gel coat finish that your RV has.

Then, do a final rinse of the whole body, and move on to the RV tires and details.

When you have the opportunity, also make sure to spray down the undercarriage of the RV to remove any dirt, mud, and road grime that you’ve picked up on your adventures.

By using a quality cleaning product you shouldn’t have to worry about water spots too much, but it can help to dry the RV as you go to avoid them.

RV Wash & Wax FAQs

How often should i wash my rv.

Wash it however often you like, but in order to really maintain your gel coat and surface finish, we recommend at least 1-2 times per year. Every recreational vehicle is different. If you have a newer RV with a nicer finish and better gel gloss, you may want to maintain it more frequently than someone with an older RV with oxidation.

Why should I use a wash & wax in one?

RVs are extremely big vehicles in many cases, and by using a wash and wax in one, you’re able to maintain your RV in one step instead of having to do two separate steps. This could save you hours, if not days, every time you wash your rig.

Are there companies that will wash my RV for me?

Yes! You can hire an RV detailing company, and they’ll even come to you. This is the easiest way to maintain your RV’s cleanliness, gloss, and finish since you don’t have to struggle to do it yourself. But if your camper is small enough, it shouldn’t be to hard to DIY it alone.

If you have a larger RV, such as a Class A motorhome, you can go to Blue Beacon Truck Washes (or other brand truck washes…they are usually near places where there are multiple truck stops on the same exit) and they will wash them for you as a reasonable price.

How To Wash an RV

travel trailer wash and wax

Washing an RV is not like washing a car. It’s a lot more like washing a small house–with wheels. There isn’t an abundance of commercial RV wash locations to simply drive your RV through. Rolling up to a high school fundraiser and letting them tackle it is a lot to ask.

Before we get into the details, here’s a short overview of the steps for washing an RV:

  • Park where you can easily access the roof and all four sides
  • Assemble your RV cleaning supplies (brushes, cleaning solution, bucket, ladder, etc.)
  • Mix your cleaning solution according to its instructions
  • Work from roof to tires (top to bottom)
  • Rinse–scrub–rinse–repeat
  • Work in small sections to avoid soap drying before you can rinse
  • Use a squeegee to prevent water spots on windows

We’ll also note here that you should always consult your owner’s manual for model-specific RV cleaning instructions.

Where To Wash Your RV

travel trailer wash and wax

There are so many makes, models, and sizes of RVs. Cleaning a pop-up camper or Happier Camper will take a lot less time (and soap and water) than cleaning a Class A diesel motorhome .

Because of that, you will rarely find RV parks that are willing to let you use enough water to wash your full RV. Scrubbing and rinsing the bugs and dirt grime from the front bumper and windshield is usually acceptable at a campground.

But to wash the entire coach, you’re going to need to be at home or find a very friendly person willing to let you use a pretty significant amount of water. If you’re traveling, stopping at a truck wash or a self-service car and RV wash is your best bet.

How Often Should You Change The Water?

change-water-how-to-wash-your-rv-04-2022

Just like mopping the floor, if you don’t change your water regularly, you’ll simply end up pushing dirt and sand around. This can cause scratches in the body of your rig and leave you with a smudged, smeared RV body.

For smaller motorhomes under 25 feet in length, you should typically change your water halfway through the cleaning process. This means you can clean one side and the back of your coach before changing out water and adding more of your RV-friendly cleaning solution .

For longer RVs, you should change the water out 2-3 times to avoid scratching the body. Of course, you may need to refresh the water even more frequently if your RV is especially dirty.

Can You Pressure Wash an RV Rubber Roof?

travel trailer wash and wax

Pressure washing your RV isn’t always a good idea. RVs often have overlapping layers or gaskets that can be damaged by high-pressure water, resulting in leaks. Areas sealed with silicone or other malleable materials can be pulled loose and seriously damaged.

RVs with metal bodies are also susceptible to damage from a pressure washer. Because they’re clad and riveted, water from high-pressure washers can seep in between the seams. And if your RV has decals, a pressure washer can peel them right off.

This isn’t to say you absolutely can’t use a pressure washer on an RV. It’s just a good rule to maintain a safe distance and have a good working knowledge of pressure washers before you do.

Typically, a good soft brush and a garden hose with a sprayer attachment will do the job just fine. Cleaning solutions made for RVs work to break down dirt and grime so that you don’t need that extra pressure to clean them off.

What is the Best RV Wash and Wax?

wash-and-wax-how-to-wash-your-rv-04-2022

RVs tend to come with three primary exteriors: metal, painted metal, and fiberglass. Each of these may require a special kind of RV cleaner or brush (no, dish soap won’t suffice). We recommend always reading your owner’s manual for manufacturer suggestions to help you clean and wax your RV.

Metal bodies are common on older RVs and trailers, but they’re still used on certain brands today (think Airstream). They’re commonly aluminum and stainless steel and are best cleaned with a pre-wash that removes the majority of grime and grit. Then, you’ll want to use non-abrasive cleaners and soft-bristled brushes and mitts to remove the remaining residue.

Painted metal bodies can be treated like most vehicles. A gentle cleaner that’s made for RV use will do the trick, along with a soft-bristled brush. Stubborn stains and grime will require a bit more elbow grease, but they should come out with the pressure from a hose with a sprayer attachment.

Fiberglass bodies are more common in modern RVs because they’re lighter—inherently making them more fuel-efficient. Some are painted and some feature decals like stripes or other decorations.

For fiberglass, the best solution is a wash-and-wax product that cleans and protects your RV exterior. Most are environmentally friendly as well, which is particularly important if you’re planning to clean your RV in a campground.

How To Clean RV Awnings

awning-cleaning-how-to-wash-your-rv-04-2022

Awnings are generally pretty simple to clean. This is because it’s difficult to get them dirty unless you’re camping in a dusty area. Usually, it’s as easy as hosing off the top and bottom sides of the fabric.

Gentle scrubbing may be needed for bird droppings or other residues that don’t come off after an initial rinse. Always use a soft brush with minimal pressure for this, and you can also consider using an awning cleaner to help remove caked-on grime. Most importantly, make sure your awning dries completely before rolling it up.

Treating Gaskets and Weather Seals

gaskets-and-seals-how-to-wash-your-rv-04-2022

Every window, door, and slide-out on an RV has a gasket or flexible weather sealant. They’re rubber pieces that protect the RV from the elements. Keeping these seals and gaskets clean preserves them in good working order—meaning fewer replacements.

Silicone-based cleaners and lubricants keep your gaskets and seals from drying out. Many simply spray on and require no wiping or additional cleaning, but read the instructions carefully to make sure you apply them properly.

RV Rims and Tires

rims-and-tires-how-to-wash-your-rv-04-2022

RVs tend to come with three kinds of wheels: painted rims, aluminum wheel covers, and chrome rims. The good news is that all three can be cleaned with the same RV cleaning solution and soft-bristled brush you use on the rest of your RV.

Here are a couple of additional considerations:

  • Remove aluminum wheel covers periodically to check for signs of rust.
  • Chrome rims are easily scratched. Avoid hard-bristled brushes and abrasive cleaners.

Your RV’s tires should also be cleaned with soap and water as you’re working on the rims. To shine your tires back up after they’ve dried completely, apply a tire and trim shine. For more tire care recommendations, read our guide to maintaining RV tires .

How to Wash an RV Roof

roof-clean-how-to-wash-your-rv-04-2022

RV roofs come in two types: rubber and fiberglass. Rubber roofs are mostly a thing of the past,  but they were prevalent on RVs from the 80s and 90s. Fiberglass roofs are more common on modern motorhomes.

To clean a rubber roof, you’ll need an appropriate rubber roof cleaning product. Check your owner’s manual for rubber roof cleaning instructions and clean your roof every few months to keep it in good shape.

Avoid roof sealants or coatings that aren’t specifically made for rubber roofs. Using a product that isn’t safe for rubber roofs will prevent your roof from flexing appropriately and cause further damage.

On RVs with rubber roofs, black streaks can also develop on the roof or the sides of the camper. To remove them, you’ll need a   black streak remover made for RVs.

Fiberglass roofs are a little easier to clean. In most cases, you can use the same cleaner you’re using on the rest of your RV. Still, consult your RV owner’s manual for warnings related to roof maintenance before you select a product and start cleaning.

A Word of Caution About Getting on RV Roofs

word-of-caution-how-to-wash-your-rv-04-2022

Some RV roofs are walkable, but others aren’t. Check your owner’s manual or with your dealer before stepping foot on (or potentially through) your RV’s roof.

For walkable roofs, it’s a good idea to wear shoes with a good grip on wet surfaces. Also, keep in mind that your footwear will get wet. Find a spotter that can assist and keep watch as you bring a hose with a sprayer attachment up your RV ladder , along with an appropriate cleaning solution and a soft brush.

For non-walkable roofs, you’ll need a telescoping RV ladder to spray and clean from various locations around the sides of your RV roof. It’s also a good idea to have a spotter nearby during this process.

If you’re not steady on your feet or you’re simply nervous about heights, you can leave washing your RV roof up to trained service and care technicians. Find a Camping World Service Center near you to assist with your RV roof cleaning needs.

Where Can I Get My RV Washed?

where-to-get-washed-how-to-wash-your-rv-04-2022

When you’re on the road and in need of a cleaning, many campsites recommend cleaning contractors. They’ll come to the site with their own water source and clean your RV. They typically charge by the linear foot of your rig. So again: a Class A will cost more to clean than a small camper .

If you’re on the road and you need to come into a Camping World location for supplies anyway, inquire about our RV Spa Treatment . As you shop, our service technicians can wash and wax your entire RV, inside and out!

Because of everything you’ve learned about the intricacies of cleaning your rig, you’ll know there are several questions to ask before you let any contractor start cleaning. Before you agree to a price, make sure you’re getting everything you want to be included in that price.

Here are some questions to ask:

  • Are your brushes soft-bristle brushes?
  • What kind of detergents are you using?
  • Will a pressure washer be used?
  • Does the price include the rims, awning, roof, and windows?

Here’s the one thing to know: don’t fear cleaning your RV. It’s important for the longevity of your motorhome, whether new or used , and you’ll be happier with a home-on-the-road that’s clean inside and out . There are dozens of options for the right tools you’ll need.

Shop RV Cleaning Utensils.

If you’re looking for cleaning chemicals and washing solutions, you can find them online or at your local Camping World dealership .

For all the aging baby-boomers with RV’s how does one find a service to clean (especially the roof)? It is no longer safe to climb up on roof. We live in a small town.

' src=

It is possible for you to clean up the rubber roof of your RV with the mixture of water and mild detergent. You just need to apply the mixture using a medium-bristle brush as a means of removing the molds and stains. However, ensure that you avoid using a dishwashing detergent or cleaner, which contains citrus ingredients, harsh abrasives, and petroleum solvents. These ingredients might damage the rubber roof severely.

' src=

Thoroughly wash the entire roof surface. Clean dirt, debris and any loose material from the roof surface. Use mild detergent and garden hose to wash the roof surface. Don’t use harsh chemicals or petroleum products as they can damage the roof surface. If you find the roof surface is tearing apart apply RV Roof Magic.

Wish I could find a decent self serve wash here in Sacramento. There is a guy who will cenjoy to the rv park but he charges 350. And the nearby truck wash always has a a very long wait time.

I use a mobile RV detailing service that comes to my house. 40 foot Tiffin Phaeton, costs me 140 bucks For an extra 160 bucks he waxes it. I wax mine at least every 6 months. In between I wash it myself with a spotless water device. Wash it and Don”t have to dry it. Cuts the total time of the project from 3 hours to 1.5 hours. Drying a large beast is a royal pain. I use baby shampoo and a half cup of white vinegar as my cleaning solution. Baby shampoo is very mild and vinegar gets rid of any hard water issues. Then I rinse with the spotless water device

I I have a 45 Diesel Coach I’m looking for a basic wash I can drop it off to you how much would it cost

I seal my roof about every 3 years. A rubber roof is only good for about ten years before the elements dry it out and it starts tearing. Sealing it is the only way to keep fro having to replace it.

Who doesn’t love the clean and fresh feeling of a newly washed RV? The good news is that washing your RV doesn't have to be difficult.

You just need to decide one thing: do you want to wash it yourself or pay someone else to do it?

The following is my guide to finding a place to get your RV washed, both self-serve and professional services. I also include some quick tips at the end for those washing your RV yourself.

We use affiliate links and may receive a small commission on purchases. Thank you for your support.

DIY RV Wash

Where to Get Your RV Washed

If you are looking for a good place to wash your RV yourself, there are a few places you can go.

The first one is obvious: wash your RV at your own home! If you have the room and a good spot to wash your RV, then you can treat it sort of like washing your car. Hook up your garden hose, grab a bucket and RV wash, a good RV brush , and get to scrubbing!

(Read below for my tips and tricks on washing your RV yourself!)

2. Self-Serve Car Wash Station

Another great spot to wash your RV is a local do-it-yourself car wash location. Many self-serve car wash locales have large stalls that accommodate your RV. Just make sure that the stall has clearance for the height of your RV.

You can search “self serve car wash station” on your GPS or Google. A lot of times they’ll note if they accommodate RVs or have pictures where you can see for yourself.

3. Truck Stop

Another great place to wash your RV is at a truck stop. These locations usually have facilities designed to wash big rigs, which can easily accommodate your RV.

Best of all, they’re usually located right off the interstate or main roadways. Plus, they’re easy to search for on GPS. If they don’t specify whether or not they have a wash, you can give them a quick call to ask.

Professional RV Wash

Do you want to pay someone to wash your RV for you? I sure don’t blame you. Washing an RV or even a camper van can be quite the chore. Even if you normally wash it yourself, it’s nice to have it professionally done once in a while.

Here are some great options and how to find them.

1. RV Repair Shops & Dealers

Quite a few RV repair shops and dealers have on-site RV washing stations. Some offer washing services to the public, including detailing options.

But, even if they don’t wash RVs on-site, they are one of the best resources to find a washing location nearby. A quick call to a local RV mechanic or dealer can save you a lot of searching online.

2. Mobile RV Wash & Wax

View this post on Instagram A post shared by National Detail Pros (@nationaldetailpros)

You know how there are mobile pet groomers that come to you? Well, guess what! There’s a version of that for RV grooming… I mean washing.

They are most commonly known as “Mobile RV Wash & Wax” or “Mobile RV Detailing” so I recommend searching for those terms specifically.

Just be aware of campground regulations if you’re hoping they’ll come there. Some campgrounds allow it, while others do not. This actually brings me to my next suggestion…

3. Ask Your Campground

Just like dealers are a good resource, so are campgrounds. They’ll likely be able to direct you to both self-serve and professional washing locations.

Better yet, many campgrounds have a go-to mobile RV washer and detailer. Oftentimes, you’ll get the best deal going with their guy than anyone else.

Pro Tip: Before calling a mobile RV wash service, ask nearby RVers if they want a wash, too. You might be able to get a group discount.

How to Wash Your RV: DIY Tips and Tricks

Where to Get Your RV Washed

Are you interested in washing your own RV, but do not know where to start? Whether you want to save the money or were unable to find a place that will wash it for you, don’t worry. You can easily wash it yourself!

The following is my guide to the best way to wash your RV.

What You Need:

  • Soft-bristle brush or sponge
  • Water source
  • Bucket (optional)
  • RV Cleaner that is safe for your metal, paint, and fiberglass RV body
  • Non-abrasive towel or chamois
  • Step ladder

We found a terrific product that gets bugs off our RV! Join us as we share our favorite way to clean off 5 states' worth of bugs from our LTV Wonder. For info on the product, go to https://amzn.to/35fmyVs

Washing the RV body:

  • Rinse off your rig to remove any debris or loose dirt.
  • Apply your cleaner, per its directions.

Not all cleaners are the same. Some you simply spray onto the vehicle, while others you have to dilute with water in a bucket.

  • Use your soft bristle brush to gently work in the cleaner. Be careful not to scratch the paint, but be sure to work the areas where the dirt is thick or hard to rinse off.

It is best to work in sections. Clean and dry one section, and then

         move onto the next section.

  • Rinse the RV, then towel dry immediately.

Washing the Roof:

RV roofs are tricky. Some you can walk on, some you can’t. So before ever stepping foot onto your roof, check first with your dealer or manual.

RV roofs come in two types: fiberglass or rubber. For cleaning a rubber roof, use a rubber roof cleaning product.

Fiberglass roofs can be easily cleaned. And most likely by the same product that you use on the rest of the vehicle.

If you are unsure of the type of RV roof you have, refer to your manual or contact your dealer to find out. And check out this post: Best RV Roof Cleaner (3 Top Picks 2022)

Where to Get Your RV Washed

Washing the Awning:

Washing your awning is pretty simple, but you do want to be careful. Most awnings only get dusty from camping, so they just need to be hosed off.

Scrubbing it can loosen the fabric or finish of the awning, so it should be avoided.

If you have a stubborn stain, many cleaners can sit on them for a while to loosen that dirt. Then you can simply rinse it off. Just be sure to check the cleaning instructions so that you do not damage the awning fabric.

I have a list of the Best RV Awning Cleaners you should check out.

Washing the Wheels:

To wash the wheels, it’s best to buy a wheel and rim cleaning product. Most RV wheels usually have aluminum wheel covers, painted rims or chrome rims. Be sure to find one that can work for your vehicle’s wheels.

Washing Gaskets and Weather Seals:

Doors, windows and slide-outs all come with flexible weather sealant or gasket. They are made from rubber, and are meant to keep out the elements from your RV.

Cleaning these gaskets and weather seals can help keep them from deteriorating.

To properly clean these, use a silicone-based cleaner . This can help extend their life by preventing them from drying out. Many of these cleaners are sprays, and do not require any wiping.

Like any drinking vessel, copper cups, mugs, water bottles and tumblers need to be washed after every use. Copper does require specific care and maintenance, however it's quite simple and easy to learn and do.

First and foremost, copper mugs should be cleaned properly for health and safety reasons. Whether at a restaurant or at home, you don't want anyone getting sick from drinking from an unwashed cup.

There is something compelling about the warm glow of polished copper. A huge part of the appeal and popularity of cocktails like the Moscow Mule is the unique aesthetic of the copper mug. This metal will tarnish naturally with time and use, so cleaning it properly can be essential to keeping it shiny, and fully experiencing the many benefits of drinking from a copper mug.

Like iron developing rust, copper will naturally tarnish  over time with exposure to humidity and other elements found in the air. Copper's blue-green tarnish, known as patina, can be either useful or annoying, depending on its intended use.

The patina actually serves as a protective layer for the copper beneath, and can be useful in outdoor applications such as roofing or pipes.  However, when it comes to mugs or cups, we want the copper to shine as warmly as possible, so it is essential to know about preventative care and maintenance.

Don't worry, it's super easy to do, and incredibly satisfying to restore and polish your tarnished copper mugs.

How Do You Clean Copper Mugs?

Cleaning copper mugs is like cleaning most anything, except that it MUST be washed by hand. In other words, never put them in the dishwasher, ever. Take 30 seconds to gently wash them by hand with a soft sponge, soap and warm water.

For most people at home, this shouldn't be a problem. But some high-volume bars or restaurants might not be able to dedicate the time needed for proper care. This is one reason a business may prefer a tin-lined  or lacquered copper cup that may need less polishing, although they too should still be washed by hand.

The most important part of cleaning your copper mug is drying it!

Residual water in the slightest amount can lead to tarnishing, so experts highly recommend you dry your copper mug twice, with two different soft towels or cloths until all moisture is removed.  This extra step only takes a few moments, and will go a long way towards the durability and cleanliness of your copper mule mugs.

If you want your copper mug to look nice, dry it twice!

5 Easy and Natural Ways to Remove Copper Tarnish

Owning a copper mug comes with the added responsibility of some occasional, simple maintenance. When your favorite mug starts to turn green, here are some easy solutions to restore its natural shine!

Lemon or Limes and Salt

four slices of lemon lined up and sprinkled with salts

This simple method is quick and easy, and ideal for bars or restaurants that may have an abundance of lemons on hand. Simply pour some table or sea salt onto a dish, and cut a fresh lemon or lime into 1/4th slices. Dip the fruit slice into the salt, and scrub the copper mug with slow, methodical circles inside and out. The change should be almost instantaneous, and when the tarnish has been removed, wash under warm or cool water, and dry thoroughly.

Vinegar and Salt

Mix one cup of vinegar, one tablespoon of salt, and five cups of water. Pour the solution into a saucepan, place your mug into the saucepan, and bring it to a boil. After a few minutes, the tarnish will have disappeared, and you can remove the mug with tongs, rinse it in cold water, and dry thoroughly with two soft dish towels.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Create a paste with three parts baking soda, and one part vinegar. Use a sponge to apply it to the mug with small circular motions and let it sit for about 10 minutes in order for the magic to happen. After that, simply rinse and dry until all moisture has been removed.

Harness the power of tomatoes to clean your tarnished copper mug! Apply the ketchup using a soft sponge or toothbrush, always rubbing in small circles. Then let it stand for 30 minutes. Remove the ketchup in the same way you applied it (a specially designated tarnish-toothbrush can be a highly effective tool for getting into those hard to reach places). Finally, rinse with water, and dry thoroughly with two soft towels.

Tamarind Paste

Tamarind is a tropical fruit, popular in Caribbean, African and Indian cuisine. It contains tartaric acid, which helps remove tarnish from brass and copper. If this is something you have access to, simply add water to create a paste, and rub it onto the copper with a soft sponge or cloth.  After a few minutes, rinse off the paste, and dry completely.

Metal Polish

Although the natural methods listed above are all equally effective, inexpensive and safe, another option is to use a tarnish remover or metal polish. Popular brands like Brasso are great for polishing many different kinds of metals, but the main ingredients may be less than desirable (rubbing alcohol, ammonia, mineral spirits and silica powder). Chances are you can easily find most of the ingredients for cleaning copper mugs in your pantry, and can avoid buying a product full of harsh chemicals.

Is It Safe To Drink From Copper Mugs?

Yes, it is safe to drink from copper mugs , despite click-bait headlines, myths and legislation that may suggest otherwise. True, when using 100% pure copper mugs it is possible that trace amounts of copper could be ingested. However, this can be mitigated by using stainless-steel plated copper mugs.

Copper is an essential part of human biology, and is necessary for regulating metabolic systems and vital organs. Copper deficiency can lead to arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and colon cancer.

Not only do our bodies need copper, we also have systems in place to naturally deal with any excess copper. Verified scientific studies have shown copper can do impressive things.

  • Copper and Iron work together to form red blood cells.
  • Copper helps maintain collagen, and along with other antioxidants, can reduce signs of aging.
  • Copper helps absorb excess iron in the liver.
  • Copper improves brain and nerve cell synaptic responses.
  • Copper aids in digestion and helps with ulcers and inflammation.

Copper toxicity is quite rare and, according to the World Health Organization , "There is a greater risk of health effects from a deficiency of copper intake than excessive copper intake."

The FDA guidelines do not recommend using copper for any food or beverage purposes, solely because of the extra care needed to maintain it, and applies exclusively to commercial operations, with varying local and state regulations.

This is meant to protect consumers from improperly cleaned or exposed copper mugs and cookware in bars and restaurants, and does not apply to home use. The FDA suggests the public learn about proper care and maintenance before using copper mugs, but scientists have debunked the claim that a Moscow Mule can give you copper poisoning.

When using 100% pure copper mugs and a liquid with a pH below 6.0 (like lime juice), and that liquid remains in the mug for an extended period of time, there is a chance you could consume amounts of copper. This is the reason why it is generally a good idea to use copper mugs lined with stainless-steel .

No, never! All copper cookware, utensils or mugs should be washed by hand, no exceptions. Dishwashers typically use harsh detergent, powerful water sprays and high heat that can seriously harm your copper mug both inside and out.

Dishwashers can lead to dents, tarnishing, and flaking or cracking. So take 30 seconds to do right by your copper mugs, and wash and dry them by hand!

Lines Versus Unlined Copper Mugs

When purchasing a copper mug, there are three basic options - 100% copper, tin-lined, and copper plated.

Copper is a great thermal conductor, and will keep your drink colder for longer (or hotter for longer, depending on the drinks). This is a big part of what makes the Moscow Mule an attractive summer beverage, and why copper mugs are great for cocktails in general.

Lined copper mugs  (usually with zinc, stainless-steel  or tin) can be a great choice. The double lining improves their durability, and can give them a great look. Unlike pure copper, lined copper mugs also offer additional health benefits by avoiding reactions between acids in your drink and pure copper.

Both lined and unlined copper mugs must be washed by hand and both will develop a patina over time. Lined mugs might take slightly less time to polish, because you only need worry about the outside. However, now that you know how to clean tarnished copper mugs, it's nothing you can't handle.

Essential Tips To Care For Your Copper Mugs

Copper mugs are stylish and good for your health. They keep your cold drinks chilled, and your hot drinks steaming. Copper mugs have been used for thousands of years for water purification and health benefits, and have made a triumphant rise in popularity since the invention of the Moscow Mule in the 1940's.

Whatever you choose to put in your copper mug, remember these three simple tips:

  • When serving drinks, don't let them sit for more than 4 hours. Drink up!
  • After each use, take the time to hand-wash your copper mugs with soap and water, and use TWO TOWELS to dry them thoroughly.
  • When your copper mug begins to tarnish, use one of the five easy and natural ways listed above to polish it to perfection.

Thank you for taking the time to become an expert on using, cleaning and caring for copper mugs. Cheers!
