  • N3229YBbradf 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A grand tour of street art and beyond Loved this tour. Leith was fantastic! As with all street art, it's about much more than the art. Street artists have a mission - that without a message, it's not street art. Leith gave a wondeful tour, not just of street art, but of the message - which meant understanding Lisbon the city, it's culture and history, the history and culture of Portugal, the landscape, the cityscape, it's current economic problems, what gentrification and digital nomadism are doing to the city, it's food, it's politics, and so much more. If you really want to understand Lisbon today, go on this tour with Leith! Read more Written 25 December 2023

  • jmvx2 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles You’ll never look at street art in the same way again. We’ll worth 3 hours. Our thoughtful guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and culture of Lisbon street art. When we travel we usually hire an art historian to guide us through museums to understand the artists and their works. This tour was the same experience (with a twist). We knew nothing about the vast culture of street art. The history and origins, the statements being made by the artists and unique identifying characteristics of the art (not dissimilar to the traditional masters found in museums worldwide). This tour was enlightening, enjoyable and I highly recommend it. Read more Written 1 November 2023

List of Monuments in Lisbon

1. the tower of belem .

Monuments in Lisbon, landmarks of Lisbon Portugal

The Torre de Belem (Belem Tower), Lisbon The Torre de Belem is the most popular monument in Lisbon Potugal. This delightful little fort guarded the Tejo Estuary since the 16th century and was constructed at the height of the Manueline style of architecture. Decorating the fort are Arabic styled watchtowers, battlements adorned with the “Cross of Christ” and the earliest carving of a rhinoceros in Europe. Being the icon of Lisbon, the Torre de Belem is always popular with tourists, and there can be very long queues to visit the rather empty and austere interior of the fort. The true beauty of the Torre de Belem is the highly ornate exterior, which is best seen from the landside or via a boat tour. This article will provide a tourist guide to the Torre de Belem.  The real attraction of the Torre de Belem is the exterior stone carving, inside is a little sparse. There are good views from the top floor of the fort, but the view from the Padrão dos Descobrimentos monument is much better.

Address: Torre de Belem, Lisbon, Portugal.

The Estação do Rossio may not receive as many travellers as the Oriente Station, but it attracts plenty of design-interested visitors who come to gaze at the splendidly designed stone arches, beautiful clock tower and lofty ceiling inside. This historical landmark in Lisbon is also the one to leave from when travelling to Sintra, one of Europe’s loveliest cities.

This rich and extensive history of this famous monument in Lisbon is captured within the castle, from the formidable fortifications, the defensive viewpoints or the tranquil gardens of the royal quarters. For visitors there is a lot to experience while in the castle, the citadel’s towers and battlements can be explored, there are amazing views over the city, along with an informative museum. The castle is in the heart of the Alfama district, one of the most characterful areas of Lisbon, and is where we recommend you begin your tour of Lisbon.

When you gaze at the exterior of the São Roque Church in Bairro Alto, it’s hard to imagine that the plain, white facade conceals the most beautiful cathedral in Lisbon. The first Jesuit church built in Portugal, the São Roque Church features lots of giltwood, detailed mosaics and a stunning painted ceiling. Next door, you’ll find the Museum of São Roque, among the most complete museums of Portuguese religious art.

7. National Pantheon

Monuments in Lisbon, landmarks of Lisbon Portugal

National Pantheon

A symbol of Portuguese identity, the National Pantheon is a national monument in Lisbon that welcomes and honors the great men and women to whom the country owes its recognition. A memory that perpetuates and symbolizes the highest posthumous honor granted in Portugal.  The history of the National Pantheon features curious facts about its tumultuous construction process, which is the result of many historical contingencies experienced by the country over a period of nearly 300 years.  The National Pantheon’s architecture is a unique example of Baroque in Portugal. In order to build it, the architect João Antunes was inspired by Italian trends, thus adopting an innovative architectural design that had no continuity in Portugal. Be sure to enjoy the details on the National Pantheon’s undulating walls, as well as the rich decor with colored marble and inlaid stone. We must also highlight the monumental dome that rises about 80 meters above ground.  We suggest you visit the National Pantheon with time to spare, in order to be able to admire all its historical facts and architectural details.  A visit to the National Pantheon is indispensable, not only because of the architectural and historical features but for all the symbolism it represents in Portugal’s history.

Address: Campo de Santa Clara, 1100-471 Lisboa, Portugal.

8. Lisbon Cathedral

monuments to see in Lisbon, monuments Lisboa card, top monuments in Lisbon, monuments to visit in Lisbon, list of monuments in Lisbon, best monuments in Lisbon

Lisbon Cathedral

Lisbon’s Cathedral was constructed by D. Afonso Henriques, three years after the conquest of Lisbon. This cathedral was built over the old Muslim mosque. In its interior the cathedral has three naves, with six spans and presents a dark austere style. The most valious piece present in the cathedral is an ark which contains the remains of Saint Vicent, which were transported from Saint Vicent’s Cape to Lisbon. In the interior of this old monument in Lisbon  you might also observe remains of old Roman ruins.  According to the legend, two crows escorted the boat in which the Saint Vicent’s remain came in. This is also the reason why crows and the boat have become one of Lisbon’s symbols.

Address: Lisbon Cathedral, Lisbon, Portugal.

9. Vasco da Gama Bridge

This must see monument in Lisbon was inaugurated in 1998 and it’s the longest bridge in Europe and the 9th widest bridge in the world with more than 17 kilometers, 12 above water. As a celebration of the 500 years of the arrival of Vasco da Gama to India (in 1498), the bridge was named after him and its inauguration was commemorated with a portuguese typical dish – feijoada – served on a table with the same length as the bridge, this meal’s recorded in the Guinness World Records.

10. Praça do Comércio

Monuments in Lisbon, landmarks of Lisbon Portugal

Praça do Comércio

The Praça do Comércio is the most magnificent plaza in Lisbon and was historically the commercial hub of the city. In the plaza, merchants would trade exotic items and spices, and explorers would seek financing for voyages to Africa, India or Brazil.  Today this important landmark in Lisbon is just as lively, but the focus is tourism and culture. Residing in the distinctive yellow buildings are sophisticated restaurants and boutique hotels and there is always a great (holiday) atmosphere about the plaza. The Arco da Rua Augusta is the triumphal arch, which leads from the Praça do Comércio into central Lisbon, and at the top of the monument is a wonderful panoramic viewing point.

Address: Praça do Comércio, Lisbon, Portugal.

11. Padrão dos Descobrimentos

historical monuments in Lisbon, famous monuments in Lisbon, statues and monuments in Lisbon, monuments in downtown Lisbon, Portuguese monuments in Lisbon

Padrão dos Descobrimentos

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos commemorates the Portuguese explorers of the 15 and 16th-century. This bold and powerful monument stands on the banks of the Tejo Estuary, and was where many of these voyages to India and Brazil departed from. Along two sides of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos are lifelike depictions of the explorers and the prominent people from the era, who funded or supported the voyages. At the top of the monument is a viewing terrace, which provides outstanding views of the Belem district. You must visit this iconic monument in Lisbon and best to go in the afternoon and it is near to the Tower of Belém.

Address: Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Lisbon, Portugal.

12. Oriente Station

historical monuments in Lisbon, famous monuments in Lisbon, statues and monuments in Lisbon, monuments in downtown Lisbon, Portuguese monuments in Lisbon

Oriente Station

The bright white Oriente Station is the main entrance and exit for travellers heading in and out of Lisbon by train or bus and is known locally as the Gare do Oriente. The maritime theme of Expo ’98 is mirrored in the station’s wave-like beams at the entrance, and the building itself is an interesting mix of Gothic architecture and modernism. The juxtaposition between the Gothic concrete arches and the more futuristic latticework of the two-level station makes it worth the attention of architecture fans. At the ground level of this iconic landmark in Lisbon you’ll find the bus station, as well as cafés, banks and shops, while the bottom level is the entrance of the metro and home to small markets. Meanwhile, the upper level is for trains.

Address: Oriente Station, Labon, Portugal.

Monument to the Discoveries

A giant ship made of white stone stands out against the sky of Lisbon: the  Monument to the Discoveries  (in Portuguese  Padrão dos Descobrimentos ), is a monumental sculpture that celebrates those years that have written the history of Portugal.

One of the most recent monuments of Lisbon, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos was initially made as a temporary piece of art to attend the Portuguese World Exhibition of 1940, and then it was rebuilt in 1960 to celebrate the fifth centennial of the death of  Infante Henry the Navigator , also called the Navigator, who played a key role in the oversees expeditions of Portugal.

The monument was built along the shores of the  Tagus river , the starting point of the great maritime ventures that brought great richnesses to Portugal from the 15th until the 16th century. The monument represents one of the main attractions of the charming district of  Belém , which is entirely dedicated to the discoveries of Portugal.

Visit to the Monument to the Discoveries

With its majestic size, the Monument to the Discoveries dominates the whole district of Belém. The view will leave you breathless due to the huge size of the monument as well as to the great contrast between the white marble of the structure and the blue of the sky.

It is possible to access the monument passing through an elegant front yard decorated with hundreds of colorful marble tiles that create a huge rose of the winds.

With your  entrance ticket to the Monument to the Discoveries  you can go up to the top of the monument and enjoy a great panoramic view of the river, from Oeiras to Alcântara, and admire how the Tagus river flows into the ocean. It won’t take too long before you can spot some of the most famous Belém’s attractions, like the Belém Tower and the Jeronimos Monastery.

Downstairs you can visit the  Belém Cultural Center , which opened its doors in 1985; it is an exhibition space with permanent and temporary exhibitions to learn more about the monument and the historical period to which it is dedicated.

The sculptures

The huge stone ship is decorated on both sides with a series of sculptures representing the great protagonists of the maritime ventures of Portugal; navigators, cartographers, colonising, missioners, warriors, writers, kings and queens.

Of course, among all these characters there are also the four navigators who undertook the most famous and important Portuguese ventures:  Bartolomeo Diaz , who first managed to reach Cape of Good Hope;  Vasco de Gama , who after a two years epic journey managed to find the route to the Indies;  Pedro Álvares Cabral , who discovered Brazil;  Ferdinando Magellano  who was the first European man to navigate in the Pacific Ocean.

The biggest statue is the one of the Infante Dom Enrique, which is located at the prow of the ship; other decorations feature some other symbols, like a sword, a flag, and the astrolabe.

The rose of the winds

From the top of the Monument to the Discoveries it is possible to admire the view of the  Wind Rose , that is to say a square decorated with a unique mosaic made of pink, white, and black tiles. It was made by architect Luís Cristino da Silva and it was inaugurated on August 1960.

The Rose of the Winds is a tribute to the glorious times of marine explorations; the square decorations portrait the rose of the winds featuring a huge planisphere inside, five small roses of the wind, three other elements representing the wind, a mermaid and a mythological fish holding a trident. The dates and the ship names refer to the most important steps of the Portuguese expansion between 1400 and 1500.

Have fun “exploring” the world as you keep walking up and down the square, maybe following the ancient routes of the greatest Portuguese seamen.

The numbers of the Monument to the Discoveries

  • The monument has a height of   56 meters ; the panoramic terrace at the top of the monument is located at a height of 54 meters. It is large 20 meters and long 46.
  • The statue of the Infante is 9 meters in height, while the statues belonging to the sculptural group are 7 meters in height.
  • The Rose of the Winds has a diameter of 50 meters, while the planisphere has a diameter of 14 meters.

How to reach the Monument to the Discoveries

From the center of Lisbon you can  reach the monument to the Discoveries  by taking tram n. 15 and several other buses.

Where to go

Experiences in lisbon, introducing lisbon.

A city with a nostalgic charm, to be experienced and savored slowly. This is Lisbon, Portugal's capital, a city rich in history, classical art and wonderful examples of architecture in Manueline style (Portuguese late Gothic) and Baroque. Center for the production of the moving music of Fado, Lisbon is also famous for its "azulejos", architectural ceramic decorations of Arabic origin.

Built on seven hills and overlooking the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon welcomes its many visitors with the warmth of its people and the quality of its dishes, especially seafood. Characteristic of its steep neighborhoods are the low-rise buildings in pastel shades, alternating with bell towers and domes.

The heart of the old town is the flat Baixa district. Perched on the highest hill of the city there is Saint George's Castle, built by the Visigoths in the fifth century and later converted into a royal residence by the Moors. Nearby there is the small medieval district of Santa Cruz, the oldest and most picturesque village of Lisbon. Tourists should also visit the Sé Patriarchal Cathedral and the impressive Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, with its numerous cloisters. Do not miss the chance to take a picture from the romantic terrace of Miradouro de Santa Luzia. Also worth seeing is Belém, an ancient fishing village full of art. The center of the nightlife is Bairro Alto with its trendy bars, old popular neighborhood, meeting point for African immigrants and artists.

A look at Lisbon’s Roman Galleries: 2024 International Day of Monuments and Sites

monumental tour lisbon

The International Day of Monuments and Sites is set for 18 th April 2024. This year, it presents numerous opportunities for visitors to enjoy various offerings by museums and sites in the country. These include concerts, theatre and dance shows, guided tours among others. This year, one of the highlights includes the reopening of the Roman Galleries on Rua da Prata in Lisbon. Visitors will have access to this exclusive treat from 18 th to 21 st April.

The curious gem on Rua da Prata

Located in downtown Lisbon, the popular Roman galleries have continued to pique the interest of many. These underground Roman structures were discovered in 1771, following the earthquake of 1755. They are believed to be from the time when Augustus ruled Rome.

Also discovered was an inscription dedicated to Aesculapius, the god of Medicine. It had been carved onto a limestone block and dated 1 st century AD. The inscription is now housed in the Portuguese National Museum of Archaeology.

An architectural feat

monumental tour lisbon

Your Guide to Seeing the Pope in Rome: Everything You Need to Know

Romans are known to have achieved numerous architectural feats, and this is one of them. The galleries are a structure known as a ‘cryptoporticus’, which was a solution that created horizontal support platforms in areas with unstable slopes. The design enabled construction of grand buildings in such areas.

  Why limited access?

The reason behind their limited access is the varying levels of humidity and water inside. When closed, the underground structure holds water as the water table is usually more than a meter deep. This water comes from an aquifer running beneath the city. In order to allow visitors in, the water must be pumped out.

Therefore, to preserve them and keep them stable, the Museum of Lisbon opens the galleries only twice a year for four days (in April and September). For now, visits to this popular attraction have already sold out, however, with tickets for all the days selling out in ‘about two hours.’

This makes them one of the most exclusive experiences visitors can have in Lisbon. Booking long in advance to access them during the limited times is necessary. Find more information on the Museum of Lisbon’s website.

Lisbon’s Monument to the Discoveries | Everything you need to know

Here is everything you need to know about Lisbon’s Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), one of Lisbon’s top tourist attractions.

The Monument to the Discoveries or Padrão dos Descobrimentos is located in the Belém neighborhood on the outskirts of Lisbon.  This is the spot where ships launched to go explore the world, spread Christianity, and create the Portuguese superpower in the 15th century.

The world-famous monument is across the street from the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Jerónimos Monastery and practically next door to the Belém Tower, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you only have one day in Lisbon, these three sites are on the top of my Lisbon 24 hour checklist – what should I see and do?

Every visitor to Lisbon should plan on spending at least half a day on this street.

How to get to the Monument to the Discoveries

Taxi or Uber takes roughly 20 minutes and €10 from downtown.

You can take bus 714 or 728, or you can take the train toward Cascais from Cais do Sodré train station , which takes about 10 minutes.

Get off in Belém and walk west along the river.

Another option is the 15E tram , which takes 30 to 40 minutes. You can catch it at Cais do Sodré, Praça da Figueira , or Praça do Comércio .

History and design of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos

The original Monument to the Discoveries was a temporary monument made out of plaster and wood, constructed in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition.

Twenty years later on the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator (O Infante Dom Henrique), it was proposed to build a permanent monument honoring the Portuguese Age of Exploration on the same spot.

The monument is more than 50 meters tall.

The permanent structure was built by architect Cotinelli Telmo (1897 – 1948) and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida (1898 – 1975).

In 1985 the interior of the monument was remodeled, creating the Centro Cultural das Descobertas, an auditorium and exhibition center, and a rooftop viewing deck.

The viewing deck offers 360-degree views. To the north, you see the Jerónimos Monastery. To the east, the Ponte 25 de Abril Bridge. South lies the Tejo River, and west is the Belém Tower (Torré de Belém). You reach the viewing deck via elevator.

Viewed from the Jerónimos Monastery, the monument is in the shape of a Latin cross.

Within the cross, on the façade is a long sword.  It shows a combination of Portugal’s military power and desire to spread the Christian faith.

On the ground in front of the monument is the Rosa dos Ventos.

On each side of the monument is a metal model of an armillary sphere – a 15th-century navigational device that gave the Portuguese explorers another edge over their rivals.

Viewed from the river, you see Henry the Navigator standing on the prow of a ship.

During the 15th century, Portugal had developed the swiftest boat on the sea, the caravel which is what Henry the Navigator is holding in his hands.

Ironically, Henry the Navigator never captained a boat.

He was a patron to the explorers and the scientists who developed the navigational equipment that put the Portuguese ahead of the rest of the world.

Viewed from the sides, the monument itself resembles a caravel .

On each ramp

Behind Henry the Navigator, there are 32 sculpted figures, each seven meters tall.

They are carved from Lioz limestone from a quarry in nearby Sintra, the same material which was used to build the Jerónimo‘s Monastery and the Belém Tower.

Who are the figures on the Monument to the Discoveries?

Behind Infante Dom Henrique (Henry the Navigator) are explorers, cartographers, sailors and knights, monks, poets, and artists, all of whom were pivotal in making Portugal into a world power during the 15th century.

Masters 2024: This Augusta National monument has a new home

1222784752

Augusta National

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Patrons to the 2024 Masters will notice a new monument as they walk into Augusta National. Except the monument is far from new.

Those entering the venerable property this week through the North Gate entrance will notice a sand-and-patina brick fountain between the walkway and tournament practice facility that boasts plaques commemorating tournament results and records. If it looks familiar to patrons who have attended the Masters in years past, well, it should: It is the same fountain that used to sit to the left of the 17th green.

RELATED: The lost green jackets of the Masters

The move was done to allow the monument to serve as a water refilling station for those entering and leaving the property, with patrons allowed to fill up their own reusable containers in a nod to reduce the use of plastic water bottle. The fountain was originally commissioned in 1959 to honor the Masters’ 25th anniversary.

Augusta National boasts several ceremonial water fountains on the course. Along with the tournament record marker, both Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer have fountain plaques, with Palmer’s at the 16th hole and Nicklaus’ between the 16th and 17th. There is also a fountain near the par-3 course, dedicated to the prelude Wednesday event featuring current and past Masters competitors. There are also ceremonial plaques for the Hogan (12th), Nelson (13th) and Sarazen (15th) bridges.

Not far the tournament fountain’s previous location is a new permanent stone structure . The building has concessions, restrooms and a small merchandise area. There were temporary concessions, merchandise and telephone stations in this area in the past, although they were removed following tournament week. A previous permanent restroom area was knocked down and upgraded.
