Belize Travel Tips
When planning a day trip in Belize, you should know the climate and currency used. Also, be aware of your different needs depending on your tour package. For example, you may need a swimsuit for water-based tours. Or, a good pair of walking shoes if most of your tour experience is on foot.
The climate of Belize is warm, with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees, so be sure to apply lots of sunscreen during your stay. If you forget to pack your own bottle, you can buy one at nearly any gift shop or supermarket.
From approximately late November to mid-April, the dry season yields less rain and more tourist activity than the rest of the year. However, it's always a great time to go on a tour or excursion in Belize! This country loves to celebrate, so check out the many holidays of the year Belize celebrates while planning your vacation.
The Belize dollar is the standard currency, but almost all places accept US dollars. Ask your tour guide specific questions about currency.

Belize Tour: Exciting Adventures in Tropical Paradise
While my husband and I enjoyed the sights of mainland Belize and Caye Caulker, we would not do another tour through VIBE Adventures based in Mexico. The Belizean tour guide that was hired by VIBE was informative, but often did not check the daily itineraries and made several changes, which bothered others on the tour. He went home every night, but could be contacted on WhatsApp. He charged me USD$50 for a 4 mile drive from the airport to the hotel (and I gave him USD$10 tip), and I was told days later by others on the tour that it cost then USD$30 to take a taxi for the same trip. I forgot my phone at the airport upon arrival, so the guide went back to get it for me, I give him another USD$50 and USD$15 tip for his troubles. AT the end of the trip, he send me a message on WhatsApp about why I didn't give him another tip at the end of the tour! No others in our group received this request and he accommodated them substantially, so very unprofessional of him, and I cannot speak for the other group members why they chose not to tip him. I stayed with him during physical climbs because he could barely climb stairs, etc. On transfer to Caye Caulker, he did not know if someone else was going to meet us there for the tour, this shows poor communication between VIBE, the tour group and our guide. I don't want to focus on the negative aspects, and learning about Mayan culture and all activities were wonderful.

Our happy clients.
Not sure if I’m spelling his name right but Kadeem was excellent!! He was very informative, friendly and engaging! I would recommend this tour and him to anyone anytime He showed us an amazing time he definitely went above and beyond for us! He was on time to pick us up from the water taxi and drop off. All the activities were well planned, fun and exciting!! Lunch was delicious! I would definitely book again with this company ..... if you can request a guide get Kadeem! ( I really hope Im spelling that right!!)
We are a family of 5 with 2 teens and 1 pre-teen. We took the 6am ferry from San Pedro to Belize City, where we met our tour guide Kareem. We were able to purchase a quick breakfast for the very comfortable and air conditioned ride in a nice van to our first stop. We haven been on tours before in buses - this was so much comfortable! The zip lining was great and Hector was so funny and friendly. Next stop was cave tubing- there is a bit of a walk over some rocky terrain but the ride down the river is worth it. Kareem points out all sort of plant life and interesting bits of info along the way- loved the Mimosa Plant that goes to sleep when touched- one of my favorite parts of the day. A traditional Belizean meal for lunch, which everyone loved even my picky 11 year old. Then about an hour and half car ride to the ruins- a little long- but it gave the kids a chance to take a nap and we were able to enjoy the natural beauty of Belize through the car windows. The ruins were amazing and all along the way our private tour guide, Kareem, was ever knowledgeable and attentive. Then a comfortable car risen beck to the 5:30 ferry- I was a little worried about time - but we made it back with 5 minutes to spare. Kareem knows his back roads of Belize to avoid traffic. It is a long day but if you want to pack in as much as you can on your trip to the mainland from Ambergris Caye - this is the trip to take.
We did this as an excursion from a cruise, and out of our whole trip (7 days), this was my favorite. One thing that made it particularly enjoyable and fun was our guide, Kadim. He told us about the history of Belize and all the things that were going on at the moment politically. It made us feel more of a connection to this beautiful country. We were able to go to see the ruins at Altun Ha and then cave tubing. I was going to say this was a once in a lifetime trip, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we went again!
Roberto (tour guide) made this an amazing trip! Apart from just the sheer natural awesomeness of the sights and the experience of being there, Roberto was a font of info about all things Belize. He taught us about culture, economics, history, wildlife... and took us for one of the best meals we had the whole time we were in the Western Caribbean! Yo jou could tell how proud he was of his country and his input made for an incredible time. We saw groups from other tour companies and they were clearly not getting the personalized attention that we were enjoying. I really was blown away by his interaction with us. I would definitely use Belize Funtours (and request Roberto) if I ever make it back. 5 Stars!!!

We had the most amazing time on our visit to Belize. I can't say enough about how great the people are and how fresh the food is. It was great to have had all our accommodations, excursions and transportation taken care of before we even arrived. All our guides were very kind and informative. I feel that we experienced so much in just one short week. Our trip started in San Ignacio for 3 days of exploring Mayan archeological sights, swimming with waterfalls, exploring caves and topped off with a few breath taking ziplines. Then off on the water taxi to enjoy Ambergris island life. From there we cruised around on our golf cart, ate amazing seafood, snorkeled, sailed and swam in the most beautiful ocean waters. And once again topped off with a fun cessna flight with amazing views back to the mainland for our departure. Just GO!

The 20 Best Things to Do in Belize, From Barrier Reef Excursions to Cave Tours
Get to know Belize with these suggestions from locals.
Comprised of more than 400 islands and nearly 9,000 square miles of mainland, Belize is home to rainforests, jungles, mountains, rivers, an extensive cave system, and many well-preserved ancient Maya ruins. Adventures on both land and sea make Belize a popular destination, and its beaches and resorts are terrific for visitors who simply want to relax and enjoy the tropical climate .
To better understand the variety of ways travelers might get to know Belize, we gathered suggestions from local experts, including Patricia Johnson, head of trip design at Absolute Belize (and a Travel + Leisure A-List Travel Advisor ); David Benzaquen, general manager at Cayo Espanto ; and multiple team members with Alaia Belize . Anoushka Brandl, commercial director at Matachica Resort & Spa and Gaïa Riverlodge , and Janet Woollam, managing director at Victoria House Resort & Spa , shared their thoughts as well.
This list of things to do in Belize features ideas for everyone, from adventurers and history buffs to foodies and travelers looking to chill out on a lounge chair in the sun.
Tour the ancient city of Caracol.
One of the largest Maya sites in Belize, this ancient city covers about 25,000 acres in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. “You’ll marvel at the massive pyramids, detailed carvings, and remarkably well-preserved ancient artifacts,” says Johnson. “And you’ll learn fascinating details about ancient Maya culture, from daily life and religion to the ingenuity of their buildings.”
Snorkel or dive in the Great Blue Hole.
Located about three hours by boat off Ambergris Caye, the Great Blue Hole is a ring of coral encircling a huge underwater sinkhole. It’s home to colorful fish, shrimp, groupers, black tip and reef sharks, and other Caribbean marine life. Almost 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep, the Blue Hole is accessible by dive boat tours.
Fly over the Great Blue Hole on a helicopter tour.
For a birds-eye view, stunning photos, and a thrilling experience, take flight over the Great Blue Hole. Several of our experts suggested this tour, and Benzaquen pointed out that Cayo Espanto “is home to a helipad and partners with a local service provider” for convenient pick-up and drop-off.
Enjoy traditional Belizean dishes.
“I suggest checking out local eateries like El Fogon in San Pedro’s downtown for traditional Belizean food,” says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. At Matachica Resort, Brandl tells T+L, “The Captain’s Table, a social gathering for eight guests, is a five-course dinner hosted by a different resort team member each time, a true local food experience.”
Explore the underground caves of Belize.
The ancient Maya believed that caves were entrances to the underworld, and in Belize, travelers can explore a number of them by hiking, canoeing, tubing, or swimming. The experience is “an adventure you will never forget,” according to Johnson. “One such sacred cave is Actun Tunichil Muknal , which contains a remarkable collection of artifacts and skeletal remains that have been preserved over the centuries.”
Join a tubing tour through the caves.
Offered by many local tour companies, cave tubing is a visitor favorite in Belize. After a drive to the rainforest, there’s a short hike before you hop on an inner tube to float along an underground river through the natural caves. A guide navigates the tubes, so no paddling is required. Lunch and transportation from a central meeting point are usually included.
Feast on your own fresh catch.
According to Woollam, “Reef fishing with a beach BBQ is fun and widely popular. The fishing is quick and easy, followed by lunch cooked over an open fire. Fresh seafood with Belizean spices, marinades, and condiments has been called the best lunch ever.” Describing a Cayo Espanto excursion, Benzaquen tells T+L, “After snorkeling, you catch your own fish, conch, or lobster, then you head to an uninhabited island beach where your guide will cook your 'catch of the day.’”
Hang with locals at Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye.
The secret is out, and it’s the place for all-day music, food, and drinks. “Alaia’s guests often rent a golf cart to visit Secret Beach, where a day of relaxation, paddle boarding, and jet skiing awaits,” says Jesus Oba, concierge with Alaia Belize. Nearby, The Truck Stop features a beer garden, pool with swim-up bar, movie screen, games, and live music.
Learn all about chocolate.
The ancient Maya are said to have invented chocolate, and the annual Chocolate Festival of Belize celebrates that history, local culture, and more. If you can't attend the May event, there are other options. Brandl suggests that visitors “Experience traditional Maya chocolate making at Ajaw in San Ignacio, then try the delectable chocolate brownie at Gaïa Riverlodge's Five Sisters Restaurant as a midday sweet treat.” In San Pedro, visit Belize Chocolate Company or Mahogany Chocolate .
Dive or snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.
“Our most popular and sought-after tour is snorkeling or diving among the vibrant marine wildlife in Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley," says Oba of Alaia Belize. "Our guests get a thrill out of swimming with nurse sharks, giant jackfish, blue tangs, and sea turtles. Some guests overcome their fear of getting in the water and come out wanting to go back in."
Experience the Belize Barrier Reef.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and second in size after the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the Belize Barrier Reef extends more than 180 miles along the coast of Belize. Dive, snorkel, or do as Patricia Johnson suggests: “Hop on a sailing adventure and explore the vibrant marine life, colorful corals, and picture-perfect islands along the Belize Barrier Reef.” Woollam recommends “an easygoing sunset cruise along the reef," noting that most catamarans sail for about two hours.
Browse the shops in San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye.
“As a local, one of my favorite things to do is explore the small shops, restaurants, and bars in San Pedro town," says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. "If you are an art buff or just looking to take home a souvenir, stroll downtown where small galleries, gift shops, and nifty nooks are in abundance."
Learn about the Garifuna people.
“Experience the culture of the Garifuna people by taking part in traditional drumming and dancing celebrations, sampling local dishes, and even staying in a Garifuna village," suggests Johnson of Absolute Belize. "You’ll come away from this experience with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the richness and friendliness of the Belizean people.” ToursByLocals offers a full-day Garifuna culture tour with convenient pick-up and drop-off.
Get dive certified.
“The proximity of the reef to the resorts makes getting dive certified an easy, safe, and fun experience," says Woollam. "If you have the desire to learn how to scuba dive, dive organizations like PADI have made classroom time a thing of the past. The theory portion of the certification is easily accessible online and can be done at home prior to arriving in Belize.”
Explore Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.
Located about two hours from San Ignacio in the Cayo District of south central Belize, this reserve is home to natural pools , caves, Maya ruins, and waterfalls, including the highest waterfall in Central America, Thousand Foot Falls. Stay within the reserve and above Five Sisters Falls at Gaïa Riverlodge .
Meet new feathered friends.
Grab your binoculars and try to spot some of the nearly 600 species of birds that live in Belize. The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a great place for birdwatching , and Paradise Expeditions offers a variety of expert guided tours on the mainland and cayes.
Go on a fishing excursion.
On a half-day or full-day deep sea fishing adventure, you’ll be fishing for tuna, mackerel, marlins, and more. For a more casual day of fishing different spots along the reef, you can choose reef fishing in calmer seas. Ideal for families, the latter trip includes rum punch, snacks, sodas, and lunch. Turneffe Atoll is also a favorite fishing destination.
Get active in the Caribbean Sea.
Once you’ve relaxed on the beach and you’re ready to get wet, it’s time for your favorite activity on the water. “While Ambergris Caye is known for its proximity to the reef for snorkeling and diving, our guests also enjoy other adventurous water activities, including parasailing, windsurfing, or jet skiing, which our concierge is able to organize for them,” says Oba of Alaia Belize .
Visit Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center.
More than 150 native animals make the 29-acre Belize Zoo their home. Most of the zoo’s residents are rehabilitated or rescued, and they include tapirs, jaguars, spider monkeys, toucans, macaws, coatimundi, and more. The fully accessible zoo offers VIP guided tours.
Browse and shop at San Ignacio Market.
Located in the Cayo District in western Belize, this market is set on the banks of the Macal River in San Ignacio. Open every day until 6 p.m., the market gives visitors a true glimpse into Belizean life, with handmade clothing, handicrafts, fruits, vegetables, and herbs for sale by farmers and local craftsmen. Nearby San Ignacio town offers restaurants, bars, and shops.

Best time to visit belize.
Belize’s subtropical climate sees high temperatures and humidity most of the year, but the fresh sea breezes generally make life more comfortable. The dry season is from December to May, and this is the best time to visit Belize if you’re looking for sunshine and warm temperatures.
The wet season is from June to November when rain is more frequent. Belize can get quite busy during the main holidays of Christmas and Easter so be prepared to share the beaches with other travellers during this time.
Culture and customs
Drawing on Caribbean, Central American, British and Rastafarian traditions, Belize has a unique culture of its own. In general, Belizean society is quite laidback, casual and friendly. The prevalence of beaches means that the dress code is relaxed, there is little pressure to get things done in a hurry and leisure time is valued – hallmarks of coastal living.
With a large percentage of the population being Christian, Easter and Christmas are important times for Belizeans. Drawing on many different cultural influences, Christmas is celebrated with a range of multi-racial rituals including old European traditions like decorating a Christmas tree and baking fruitcakes, as well as other traditions like Creole cooking and Garifuna dancing. Due to a high level of racial harmony and tolerance, the people of Belize are free to celebrate various religious and ethnic holidays in relative peace.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring cheap eats or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.
Things to try in Belize
Belize’s seafood is undisputedly among the best in the world. A steady supply of lobster, crab, mussels and Creole-style fish stew should keep seafood aficionados happy.
2. Hot sauces
Marie Sharp's famous habanero sauces, jams and condiments are served almost everywhere - and with everything - in Belize. You can also visit this local success story’s factory in Dangriga if you’re nearby.
3. Fry Jacks & Johnny cakes
Served at breakfast instead of toast, these doughy delights often accompany bacon and eggs. While not good for the diet, they are delicious and you’ll soon get used to a side of fry jacks instead of bread.
4. Fruit shakes
Street carts and cafes make use of the wide variety of tropical fruits that grow in Belize. Ingredients range from the usual suspects (papaya, lime, bananas), to sweet additions (cinnamon), to the darn right weird (seaweed shake anyone?). Either way, choose what you want in your shake for a quick and healthy refreshment.
Geography and environment
Belize is a land of incredible biological diversity, with natural environments rich in plant and animal life. With such impressive jungles, preserves and national parks, it’s no wonder more than 500 bird species choose to call this place home.
Boasting one of the most impressive reef systems in the world, Belize also has an abundance of marine life - including nimble reef sharks, colourful clownfish, gentle manatees and giant whale sharks.
It's estimated that more than 60% of Belize is covered in forest, and with a recent increase in conservation consciousness, hopefully, Belize will retain much of this precious vegetation that is full of rare and protected flora and fauna.
Bordered by Mexico and Guatemala (and the Caribbean Sea), this small nation has the lowest population density in Central America , and therefore people live with freedom and space. The major cities are quite slow-paced, low-density housing is common and much of the colonial heritage has been preserved in the buildings, churches and streets.
History and government
Recent history.
Belize enjoyed relative economic prosperity up until the Great Depression of the 1930s, which caused wide-scale unemployment and hardship due to falling timber prices, and the subsequent collapse of the industry. Further to this, a damaging hurricane hit the colony in 1931 causing loss of life and infrastructure.
In 1964, Belize was granted the right to self-govern, with George Price becoming the country’s first Prime Minster. Nine years later, British Honduras was officially renamed Belize and in 1981, Belize was granted its independence. More recently, Belize elected its first black Prime Minister when Dean Barrow was sworn into office in 2008.
Early history
Once part of the great Mayan Empire, Belize was occupied for centuries before the Spanish arrived. The Spanish colonists were largely unsuccessful when first trying to colonize Belize as they were repelled by local inhabitants.
However, the British arrived in the 17th century and Belize soon became a part of the British Empire under the name of British Honduras (after many battles with Spanish settlers).
Prior to the abolition of the slave trade in 1838, many African slaves were sent to Belize to work in the timber industry, namely mahogany extraction. Conditions were tough and fraught with danger, but many slaves chose to stay in this line of work after their emancipation due to their inability to receive work elsewhere or own land. Belize’s current population reflects the rich African culture that the slaves brought to the area centuries ago.
Top 10 outdoor experiences in Belize
1. scuba diving.
Experienced divers will jump at the chance to explore Belize’s epic Great Blue Hole. Declared one of the top ten scuba diving spots in the world by scuba-legend Jacques Cousteau, this sinkhole has enough groupers, grey nurses and reef sharks to astound diving veterans.
2. Sea Kayaking
Caye Caulker is one of the best places in the world to explore the sea in a kayak. Glide over the clear Caribbean waters and spot graceful marine life, stop and rest at sandy beaches, and experience the quiet and beauty of uninhabited islands.
3. Zip Lining
Make like Tarzan and speed through the Belizean jungle with the wind rushing through your hair on a zip line. This exhilarating ride gives you a different perspective of the jungle while you fly freely across the canopy way, from tree to tree, above the forest floor.
Whether you’re seeking fast mountain biking thrills or prefer slow cycling past sleepy villages, farmland and cornfields, seeing this charismatic country by bike might just be one of the best ways to get to know the brilliance of Belize.
There’s no better way to travel the rivers of San Ignacio than in a tube. For a fun and relaxing ride, just hop in a tube and float through caves, past cascading waterfalls and over gentle rapids - taking in the surrounding jungle landscapes along the way.
6. Birdwatching
With more than 500 species of birds present in the tree-filled jungles of Belize, this is a paradise for ‘bird nerds’ and nature enthusiasts. Have fun spotting magnificent toucans, tiny hummingbirds, glorious eagles and curious woodpeckers.
7. Swimming
Floating in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea is a surefire way to forget your troubles. Cheaper than therapy, daily ocean dips should be mandatory on all holidays. Luckily Belize has enough coastline to ensure that both locals and tourists can share the beaches without it getting too crowded. Phew!
Enjoy brief encounters with some of the world’s most elusive animals while hiking in Belize. Apart from world-famous birds, you can also find howler monkeys, jaguars, ocelots and tree frogs lurking in Belize’s jungles, forests and national reserves.
9. Snorkelling
Cool, clear water, golden sunshine and reefs full of colour and life combine to create the perfect conditions for some pretty sensational snorkelling.
Explore a mysterious, subterranean world while caving in some of Belize’s spectacular caves. Some feature underground rivers, sinkholes and waterfalls, others have mystical Mayan artifacts held within – either way, Belize’s caves are not to be missed!
The nature-lovers playground of Belize is not well known for its shopping – the best action definitely happens on the beaches and in the jungles. Despite this, there are still enough markets and shops to keep most entertained – look hard and you’ll find some genuine finds among the standard (overpriced) touristy trinkets.
It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.
Things to buy in Belize
1. Traditional drums
Hand-made by the Garifuna, drums are an excellent musical memento. Made from natural materials without the use of machinery, this is a great item to buy if you want to support and celebrate local culture.
2. Hot sauces and condiments
Locally made hot sauces, jams and seasonings are a great way to take a taste of Belize home with you. Marie Sharp’s Fine Food Store is a one-stop shop for hot condiment lovers.
Vibrant art by local artists can be found in city galleries, shops and some markets. From traditional ethnic art to more modern pieces, there’s a wide range to choose from.
One of the most popular items bought by visitors to Belize. Before buying, check with customs officials to see how much rum you can legally bring home with you.
Festivals and events in Belize
Lobster festivals.
Lobster lovers will be in heaven during lobster season! Several ‘Lobsterfests’ are held at the start of lobster season with the biggest being in San Pedro, Placencia and Caye Caulker. Featuring music, dance, block parties, rum and lobster cooked in hundreds of different ways, this is a chance to savour lobster omelettes, tacos, kebabs and cocktails.
Belize National Day
Starting in the first week of September, Belize National Day kicks off a three-week period of raucous festivities featuring parades, parties, fireworks and feasts in celebration of Belize’s independence. All-night beach parties and dancing all round!

Belize Lamanai Tours Customer Reviews
After a fantastic 2 hour boat ride we arrived at Lamanai. I was impressed by the beautiful Pyramid. I went up to the top but it is not for the faint of heart. I had problems coming down. Thank God for the rope that I held on to so hard, my hands were hurting. The jungle trees were full of swinging black Howler monkeys above our heads. My daughter and I had a fantastic day. Would recommend it to anyone that can walk.
Getting to walk all around Lamanai was truly a phenomenal experience. To get that close to the ruins was surreal, and to climb up the high temple was unlike anything I have ever experienced while traveling the world. Our tour guide was top notch, extremely knowledgeable, interactive, funny and kind. He even had a friend who is a true Mayan who came to talk to us . That was beyond our expectations. While walking, we saw so much and even encountered some unique wildlife along the way. You must wear sneakers/comfortable sturdy shoes. There is a lot of walking into the jungle to even reach the ruins, and much more all around. It is a lot of exercise so make sure you are up for that. Please also do NOT forget the bug spray, as heavy duty as possible is absolutely required. You are in the jungle, so you need something very good. I had some incredibly powerful products, plus deet 100 and still managed to get attacked by thousands of fire ants- both feet/ankles/legs. Believe me when I say it was excruciating. I was also wearing capris so I’d suggest long pants despite the heat. It is an experience I will never forget and I had the battle wounds for months before they fully healed. Regardless of that it was an experience unlike anything else, and one I will always be thankful for. When you are standing their among the ruins, it is something else. Not easily explained. I would highly recommend this , even if you do nothing else. This is important and unique. An in dept education that will blow your mind. Don’t forget your camera- you never know what else you might find !
We took a bus from Belize City and then a boat ride along the New River to Lamanai. The boat ride was quite exciting. We saw some local people fishing in the river. Lamanai is pretty well preserved (in my opinion). We climbed up to the top of the high temple. The view was great. Our guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We enjoyed his lectures about Lamanai. It was quit hot when we were there. We didn’t bring enough water with us, so I would suggest to bring enough water to keep you hydrated.
Incredible experience traveling through the city of Belize and country side by bus. Our guide (Adrian) were very knowledgeable of the history, culture and political landscape. The van tour is about 1 hour long and then another 45 minutes traveling by river boat to the Mayan ruins. Touring the ruins was very educational and the natural wildlife in the jungle just cam alive with all of the amazing sounds and plant life. Definitely would recommend this tour to anyone considering it!
Picked us up from hotel, then took jungle boat ride to ruins. Lots of wildlife on boat ride, including iguanas, birds, bats, and monkeys. To see crocodiles, make sure to book when river is lower during dry season. Ruins were amazing! Colin was our tour guide and he was very knowledgeable, highly respectful, and passionate about the history and culture of this place. He was able to answer all questions from those on our tour, was friendly, and had a great and appropriate sense of humor (not over the top). Lunch was included and excellent.
