Traveler Reviews

We were picked up 30 min late. Short ride to the brewery. The brewery tour is pretty lame. The lady talks for 5 min about the brewery, shows you 2 rooms, and brings you to a tasting room. She doesn't really provide a lot of info about the brewery itself, just some general info about the brewing process. The tasting room is actually decent, and they give you an ample amount of beer in there. Some of the beers arent too bad. Then they dump you out in a liquor store. We waited 30 min for the bus, never came. I had to call TWICE before we were finally pickled up. If my phone didn't work in the Bahamas i think they would have forgot about us. Overall I cannot recommend this.

The driver Brice picked us up (early!) and gave us interesting information about the island, country and culture. At the brewery, the tour lasted 30 minutes. We were then allowed to taste 6 beers and buy some not included for tasting (cheaply). You can also buy beer to bring back to the US. So fun!!

We had a 1.5 hour tour which included a quick tour of the brewery and 45 minutes of private beer tasting. They have some amazing brew and I wish they sold them outside of the Bahamas.

Unfortunately we were left waiting in the 90 degree sun for almost 25 minutes before someone showed up actually longer as we arrived 15 minutes early to be sure to be on time. When we got to the brewery, it almost seemed as though they weren't expecting us and weren't prepared. It could be that it was due to the tardiness of the driver getting us there. The tour was average, only took about 15 minutes but fun to see the assembly line running. One good thing was the opportunity to sample 6 of the beers they had in the sample room. Then you were able to continue drinking your favorites. We did enjoy the beer. Luckily the driver who was scheduled to pick us up was there on time!

So, we actually did not get to do the brewery tour or the beer tasting at all. I know this sounds a little bit like So, other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?, but other than that, it was really good! The problem with the brewery was no fault of the tour group, hence the four stars. We were picked up on time, extremely friendly and informative guide driving us and pointing out all sorts of local points of interest and telling us about the history, etc. When we arrived at the brewery we were told that due to a maintenance problem the next tour couldn't run until a time that would have been too late for us to be comfortable with the likelihood we'd get back to the ship on time. The brewery folks didn't appear to care one way or another but the tour people were exemplary. They offered us a refund or to drive us around the island for an hour and see some more sights. They reacted to the adversity of the brewery problem very professionally and ended up giving us a very enlightening and entertaining trip around the area. Kudos to them for dealing with it in a way that ended up not detracting from our enjoyment of the day. The brewery, not so much. From other reviews it sounds like the brewery staff may have been fine, but for us, they basically could not have cared less about whether or not we got to tour their facility, or what time our ship was going to leave.

If hanging out at the pier or taking taxis to the bazaar or beaches isn't your thing, then book this tour especially if you like beer. Transportation to and from the brewery is great with a short guided tour of the area. The Bahamanian Brewery is awesome! You get a tour of the facility and then more than an hour to sample as many of their beers as you like. As for the beer, it is very very good! The Sands Light is one of the better light beers I've had and their stout is very Guiness like. Great value for the money!

The tour started with Brice the tour driver picking our group of 5 up in a limo. What a great surprise!! The brewery tour was informative and fun. The tasting room was great. The grapefruit beer was awesome. The employees at the brewery made this tour a must see. Very reasonable.

RECOMMEND YOU GO IN THE AFTERNOON , WE WENT EARLY 10 A.M. NOT THE RIGHT TIME TO DRINK BEER. BUT A GREAT TOUR AND THE PEOPLE AT THE BREWERY WERE SUPER... AND BEST OF ALL SANDS BEER IS A GREAT PRODUCT...

Great location and great space! The tour was fun and we were able to see the process from beginning to end, and our tour guide was superb! And the beer was super tasty!

The tour was awesome! We got pickup at the Freeport Cruise port and the driver gave us some historical fact about the area. We were greeted by a smiling Brewery tour guide. The place was very nice and very clean. The tour guide gave us the facts on how the beer is made. We got to see the machinery, the QA department and ended with a 1/2 hour of tasting a variety of different style of beers. They have a liquor store that not only carries their beer brands but a great variety of liquors. The prices of the liquor were cheaper than the duty-free shop at the boat. Great 90 minutes tour and it was nice to get out of the hot humid weather.

Bahamian Brewery Tour: On-Site Grand Bahama

Steve

As I’ve noted before, I was impressed with the array of great beers I encountered in Grand Bahama Island . I was so impressed, in fact, that I made sure to check out  Grand Bahama’s Bahamian Brewery . That may not sound like any kind of unusual travel activity. In Grand Bahama, though, it kind of is.

Reason: The Bahamian Brewery is not on the GBI’s well-trod tourist path.

Industrial Island

Grand Bahama, and more specifically the Freeport area, was planned and developed around industrial concerns. The island’s once burgeoning lumber industry was chief among them. This is why you won’t find as many scenic seaside roads here as you do in other corners of the West Indies.

Freeport’s roadways are primarily designed to best serve the island’s commercial sector. When you’re driving between the island’s resorts and, say, the airport, this type of industrial facility is mostly what you’ll see…

Bahamian Brewery

Not many tourists stopping here, which true to Uncommon Caribbean form, made it perfect for me.

That this is also the place where all of Grand Bahama’s great beer comes from helped too, of course…

Touring the Bahamian Brewery

Inside, I met Hazel Springer, a 32 year-old local Bahamian who has a job any beer-lover would love – quality control.

It was Hazel who told me the story of Jimmy Sands and Sands Beer that I wrote about here . Hazel also told me about the local market research they conducted to arrive at the formula for Strong Back, the manly stout made just for girls . She also shared a few secrets about High Rock , another fab Bahamian Brewery brand.

The most interesting thing Hazel told me, though, was this: THEY TAKE IN VOLUNTEERS!

Volunteer Brewmaster?!

That’s right, if you’re studying the brewmaster’s art, you can apply to apprentice here and get some hands-on training!

Bahamian Brewery

If you decide to give it a go, you’ll find yourself working in what is undoubtedly among the most modern and technically advanced breweries in the West Indies. Everything in here is sparkling and new, with storage and fermentation tanks that glisten with the promise of the golden treasure inside.

Sorry, I just drooled on myself a little at the memory of touring this place.

Meeting Hazel and seeing where all the Bahamian Brewery beers are produced and bottled was great. My favorite part of the tour, though, was visiting the VIP bar at the end. There, we had a chance to relax, enjoy some taste-testing and just talk beers. As you can imagine, for me, it was the perfect ending to a great trip!

To get in contact with the fine folks at the Bahamian Brewery about apprenticeships, tours, and beer, click here to visit their website .

Bahamian Brewery & Beverage Company

Queens Highway, Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas

Opening Hours

Description.

Brewers of Sands Beer, Sands Light, Strong Back Stout, TripleB Malt and now their latest product High Rock Lager. The only All Bahamian owned and operated brewery in the entire Bahamas. You can reach us at 242-352-4070 thru 5 The Sands Story Bahamian Brewery Keeping It "Real" In Da Islands. Before the doors of the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company even opened, its owner James "Jimmy" Sands was making waves in his mom's native home, Grand Bahama. Jimmy and his family have a long heritage in the liquor and beverage business and in 2008 completed their dream of owning and operating their own 100% Bahamian brewer It all started with a "Name those Beers" competition, which launched on September 1st, 2006 ? before the brewery was even built ? with a chance to win $3,000! This competition gave local residents a chance to help find the name for the Brewery's first brew. Each entry had two chances, which means Jimmy had 3,798 names to choose from when he closed the competition. SANDS, was the first name chosen and the eleven winners were due to spilt the $3,000 prize. But Jimmy stepped in and gave each winner $500 each! The second name picked was, HIGH ROCK, taken from a local area in the east of Grand Bahama. The two lucky ladies who entered this name evenly split their $3,000. During this time Jimmy was busy building his dream brewery. He and his investors had recruited the largest German brewing company, BREWTECH, whose success in setting up local brewery's around the Caribbean and South America had made them a perfect fit for Grand Bahama's only brewery. Under their direction Jimmy hired an ALL BAHAMIAN crew from architect to paver. Just the way Jimmy likes it. In late 2007 the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company was officially opened by the Right Honorable Prime Minster of The Bahamas, Hubert Alexander Ingraham and the Sands family. Back in the liquor business again, Jimmy set out to launch his Bahamian sensation! SANDS beer launched on December 15th, 2007, and was brewed to quench the Bahamian thirst, creating a specific definitive flair that was missing in the beer market. The combined knowledge of both the German brewing experts, local Bahamian Brewery team and owners has helped this newly launched beer become the hit of the islands. Sands was due to be distributed in Grand Bahama only, but by early January 2008 - it was a national brand! Adding to their inventory in late 2008, the Bahamian Brewery team created a truly Bahamian stout. STRONG BACK was a hit with its target beer connoisseur - who loves the dark flavor with the strongest or stoutest taste. As Jimmy says, "it keeps you going all night!" This summer ? the Bahamian Brewery launched, and is now distributing, its third brew ? SANDS LIGHT ? a light taste on a great product. The newest truly Bahamian beer has just hit the beer market and is already getting rave reviews for staying true to its original taste while keeping the calories light. What's next for this budding brewer in Grand Bahama? That's for Jimmy to know and for us to figure out. One thing is for sure, he has stuck to his game plan ? truly Bahamian ? in all he does and as he likes to tell his partners "What's made here, stays here!"

Tips For Visiting Freeport, Bahamas

When it comes to tips for visiting Freeport in the Bahamas, this shouldn't be a difficult place to navigate, as it's incredibly tourist-heavy and friendly. However, it is recommended to be observant of local rules and policies while here to avoid issues with authorities.

The Bahamas, although laid back, do tend to save Sunday for church and family, so expect businesses to have modified hours or be closed. Cruise ships pull in and out of Freeport daily, so there are crowds during that time. It might be better to stay away from the main port if you don't want to wait in long lines for food, gifts, or beach access.

Regardless, the weather and people are nearly perfect here, and the hotels, restaurants, and shops are worth walking through while on the island.

Spending The Perfect Day In Freeport, Bahamas

Start the perfect day in Freeport with a stroll at Lucaya Beach before having breakfast at a beachside eatery. After the meal, head to the Lucayan National Park for a morning exploring the site’s trails and possibly the underwater caves on a diving expedition.

Afterward, visit Taino Beach and enjoy a seafood lunch at one of the beachside restaurants like Tony Macaroni's Conch Experience. Then, sunbathe at the beach or enjoy some water activities like paddleboarding. Spend the rest of the afternoon strolling through Garden Of The Groves before enjoying an evening of shopping and dining at Port Lucaya Marketplace.

Finally, catch a live performance at Market Square in the marketplace to wind down the day.

Jubilee: Embarkation

Sonesta suites in webster, jubilee: planning, carnival, norwegian, princess comparison, new orleans parking, freeport: bahamian brewery.

When looking at Freeport I didn’t find that there were very many excursion options. A lot of people were going to the Grand Lucyan Resort . The Bahamian Brewery tour and tasting sounded more my style.

I didn’t book an official tour. I took a cab and paid for the tour separately. My total cost was right at $30 which is in line with the Bahamian Brewery Tour and Beer Tasting tour you can book on Viator. It requires a minimum of two people per booking. Since I was going solo, booking this tour was not an option for me.

Freeport Cruise Port

It looks like there’s just tons of fun waiting to be had here!

The cab stand is the white tent in the picture below. As you can see all of the cabs are vans that are not very single passenger friendly.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 9c6793ab73586148bba1d6dcbc034868.jpg

Not a single person under the tent was looking to go to the brewery. They refused to put one person in a van. I had to wait for about ten minutes. Finally they just put me in a van with a group going to the beach and stopped at the brewery on the way. I was charged $11 for the ride.

The Bahamian Brewery

The brewery has a liquor store if you want to purchase something to take home.

There wasn’t anyone else waiting so I got a private tour.

This Brewery sits on 20 acres of land and opened in 2007 launching it’s first beer “Sands” which is named for it’s owner, Jimmie Sands.

After the beer tour you go to the tasting room where you can sample six beers. After that they just give you more of whatever beers you want for 45 minutes.

freeport bahamas brewery tour

The tour/tasting costed $10. I drank a lot more than $10 worth of beer I’m sure. The beer tour girl had just completed a group tour where one of the people didn’t drink. So she drank for them. That made for an interesting tour for me.

After the tasting I found a cab driver buying liquor and thought “what could go wrong?” We are kind of in the middle of nowhere and there aren’t any other cab drivers around so I caught a ride with him.

While I was waiting for him a couple came in with receipts showing they had purchased brewery tours online. I think they said carnival connections is where they bought them. The brewery people said they didn’t have any affiliation with carnival connections. In all of my excursion research I had never heard of carnival connections. It sounded like a scam to me. Unfortunately for the couple, they had to purchase new tour tickets.

I am back at the Freeport Cruise Port. The beer girl told me I should try a conch salad. When I got back to the port I ordered one at Robinson’s Seafood Delight.

freeport bahamas brewery tour

I wasn’t a big fan of the conch salad. Half of the conch I tried you couldn’t even chew. The stuff I did eat didn’t have much flavor. I took a couple bites but it wasn’t my cup of tea.

freeport bahamas brewery tour

The brewery tour was pretty short but with 45 minutes of drinking included, I thought it was definitely worth the $10 ticket.

Much of what we saw was destroyed or flooded during Hurricane Dorian in 2019. Since then the brewery has been renovated, expanded, and has re-opened.

I was happy to hear that the brewery was able to recover and they kept their employees on staff the entire time. The brewery employees assisted in the restoration of the building during the shutdown. I hope you will support this company on your next visit to the Bahamas. I know I will.

Popular Things to Do in Freeport

Freeport is the industrial center of Grand Bahama Island, the northernmost and fourth-largest island of the Bahamas. It's everything you would expect from a cruise port in the Bahamas, with beautiful white-sand beaches perfect for lounging or engaging in any number of water sports-based excursions, along with lots of restaurants, bars and duty-free shops (be sure to check out the straw market). Freeport is also an ideal base from which to visit Lucayan National Park, home to some of the Bahamas' natural marvels. Golfers can get their fix at one of several major golf courses.

Weather in the Bahamas is hot and humid year-round and can be very muggy and wet during the summer months. Winter is the busiest season for cruise tourism. The Bahamian dollar is the official currency, but most vendors will accept U.S. dollars. British-style English is the official language, but don't be surprised to hear the locals speaking their own version.

Freeport Cruise Tips, Activities, and Overview

Food and drink in freeport.

Not surprisingly, seafood is a staple of residents, and the signature dish of the Bahamas is conch salad, chilled conch marinated in lime or orange juice and mixed with tomato, onion, celery, cucumber and green peppers. Many locals believe conch is an aphrodisiac, and the mollusk is also deep fried (cracked conch), mixed in stews or soups and served as a breaded appetizer (conch fritters). Other dishes include Bahamian "rock lobster," fresh grouper and bonefish accompanied by side dishes like peas and rice or johnnycake (simple bread). Wash it all down with the appropriately named, "Gully Wash," the Bahamian cocktail made with gin, coconut water and condensed milk.

Port Lucaya Marketplace: Options abound, and two favorites are Cafe Breeze (242-373-2664; open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and Zorba's Greek restaurant (242-373-6137; open daily 7 a.m. to 10:45 p.m.).

Margaritavilla Sand Bar: Located at Mather Town Beach off Millionaire's Row, the "Sand Bar" serves casual fare with a laid-back beach vibe and American football on the television. (Spanish Main Drive; 242-373-4525; open for lunch and dinner, 11 a.m. until the party winds down)

Flying Fish: Formerly The Ferry House, Flying Fish offers seafood specialties in a posh setting. For something truly unique, ask whether they are serving lionfish, an invasive species that is destroying the coral reefs but is delicious. (Next to Port Lucaya Marketplace; 242-373-4363; open 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to Friday for lunch, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for brunch and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday for dinner)

Tony Macaroni's: At Taino Beach, look for the thatch-roofed shack with outdoor dining and amazing views. Its specialty is roast conch, but it also serves conch salad, roast lobster and shrimp and hot dogs. If you happen to be in port after 4 p.m. on Sunday, Tony hosts live jazz at the beach. (Taino Beach; 242-533-6766; open for lunch and dinner from 10 a.m.)

Sabor: Tucked away in the garden of Pelican Bay Hotel overlooking Port Lucaya marina, Sabor has a changing fusion menu with a Latin flavor that features the best seasonal catches. The menu includes items like baked Bahamian grouper or classic mushroom and Swiss burgers. (Sea Horse Road at Port Lucaya; 242-373-5588; open 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.)

Pier One: The shark feeding at this seafood and sushi restaurant might be the best-kept secret at the cruise port. Hidden on the other side of the port, you'll find both an upscale dining room and a casual wraparound patio located right on the water. The best part: the nurse sharks swimming around the water and the feedings that take place at 7 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. daily. (Freeport Harbor; 242-352-6674; open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday)

Best Cocktail in Freeport

Try a Goombay Smash at Sparky's, located in Port Lucaya Marketplace. The drink is a mix of spiced rum, coconut rum, apricot brandy, pineapple juice, orange juice and "secret ingredient."

Beaches in Freeport

Best for Lively Recreation: Lucayan Beach, which runs in front of Grand Lucayan, has water sports outfitters, bars, restaurants and equipment rentals. Find the entrance next to the police station. Another candidate is Mather Town Beach, about three miles from Port Lucaya. There are limited water activities, but it's a great place to swim, eat, drink and hang out with the locals.

Best for Families: Taino Beach, in front of Taino Beach Resort and Clubs, offers water sports, and the surf is calm enough for kids. A ferry to the beach is available from Port Lucaya Marketplace.

Best for Relaxing: Gold Rock Beach, part of Lucayan National Park, is protected by the National Trust. There aren't many services -- bring your own lunch -- but it's gorgeous and away from the crowds. While you're there, check out the birdwatching trails.

Don't Miss in Freeport

Lucaya: This is the island's uber-destination. The town is anchored by two big beach hotels: The Grand Lucayan Beach and Golf Resort and Memories Grand Bahama Beach and Casino Resort. Port Lucaya Marketplace offers tourists shopping at more than 70 boutiques, as well as a handful of restaurants and Count Basie Square, where entertainment is offered in the evenings. Additional activities at Grand Lucayan include Treasure Bay Casino and the Reef Club golf course. The beaches there are marvelous and offer all the key services from jet-ski rentals to oceanfront bars.

Freeport: The island's open-air fruit market is worth visiting; it's located across from the Winn Dixie supermarket. The best thing to buy there isn't fruit at all, but a homemade red pepper sauce that's incongruously sold in half-pint liquor bottles. The sauce -- a Bahamian specialty -- is great for spicing up meat and vegetables. The Rand Nature Center is another worthwhile stop in the heart of the downtown area that consists of 100 acres of natural beauty.

Dolphin Swim: If you're interested in swimming with dolphins, Unexso, or Underwater Explorers Society, features a variety of encounters (as well as Scuba diving adventures with dolphins or sharks). (Port Lucaya Marketplace; 800-992-3483; open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; dolphin experience prices start around $85 per person)

Deadman's Reef: Located on the island's west end, it's a top snorkeling destination. In addition to the reef, you also can see underwater archaeological excavations. Paradise Cove Beach Resort provides transportation from the cruise port. (Queen's Highway; 242-349-2677; restaurant open 10 a.m. to sunset; around $35 per person)

Lucayan National Park: At this 40-acre park, highlights include a seven-mile system of underwater caves, mangrove swamp and hiking trails (Gold Rock Beach is absolutely pristine). You can also take kayak and cycling tours. The caves, in particular, are fascinating; both Ben's Cave and Burial Mound Cave are inhabited by rare fish and underwater crustaceans (and migratory bats in summer). (Grand Bahama Highway; 1-866-978-4838; around $5)

Bahamian Brewery: About two miles down the road from Freeport Harbor is the island's brewery where short but informative tours are offered explaining the 25-step brewing process. After, there's a 45-minute, all-you-can-drink beer sampling. (Queen's Highway and Grand Bahama Way; 242-352-4070; open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday; around $7)

Sands Beer! Great Tour!

Great activity for a rainy day. Went during the week so both the bottling and canning lines were running and you could see all the steps. The brewery is 11 years old and runs under a German Brewmaster. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. At the end of the tour you get to taste 5-6 beers on draft and then sit and enjoy a few more cups just because its good and you can only get it in the Bahamas. My husband loved the Stout, my family and I liked the 66 steps and Bushcrack. No IPAs (yeah!). Well worth the trip if you like to tour breweries.

We went to visit the brewery, the guide seems not interested, and made see us 4 point. The tanks , fermentation, filtering and bottling plant. Took only 5 min. Bring us to the tasting room. And that's it.

We had a great time learning about the brewing and bottling process. After the tour we were able to taste the many beer they had on tap and get refills. I would recommend this tour and would love to do it again.

We were 4 adults. Price was 10$ each. All worth it. We tasted different beer on tap. Just great. Tour was ok. Not much to see but our guide was wonderful. Good knowledge and good service. You could buy liquor and wine in the store. They even have half price on some liquor. Overall , chin chin.

We didn’t book ahead of time. They took us for the tour as walk-ins which was nice. Our tour guide Crystal was very enthusiastic and informative. The tour itself was quite short, but what you get to see is pretty impressive. We then got to do Some beer tasting in room with a nice bar. It was fun and a great way to meet new people! The liquor store on the ground floor had good prices for their beers.

What could be better than fresh beer. They make different kinds of beer here and it is all wonderful. I am not much of a dark beer drinker but theirs is very good. I went with a tour group here. Production was in full swing so that was interesting to see how everything works.

Fast forward a few centuries and you will find a history of smugglers, rum runners, and wreckers – all having shady roots the likes of pirates. These booms showed wide swings in the economy of West End whose modern economy has always been founded on fishing and tourism.
