First look at aida cruises new flagship aidacosma as she floats out.

AIDAcosma has left the Meyer Werft covered building dock II (Hall 6). The 337-meter-long ship is the sister ship of AIDAnova, which was completed in 2018 as the world’s first cruise ship to run entirely on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Only a few days after workers from the Meyer Werft shipyard installed the propellers on AIDAcosma , the new flagship for AIDA Cruises has left the giant building dock and made her first big appearance. The new ship is now moored at the outfitting pier in the shipyard harbor. Here the masts and funnel are lifted onto the ship by crane and assembled.

new aida cruise ship

The keel for AIDAcosma was laid at the Neptun Werft shipyard in Germany. back in October 2019. The sister ship of AIDAnova features 20 decks and space for 2,600 staterooms. A new feature on AIDAcosma is the Fun Park complete with children’s pool, a twin water chute and the Water Slide. For the first time, the outdoor Sport Deck will have a boulder wall. The crowning touch is the breathtaking infinity pool. The ship has more spaces in the sun on the three tiered Sun Decks above.

Guests will be pampered in culinary terms at 17 restaurants and 23 bars. The diverse range of gastronomic choices is being enhanced with a new restaurant: The Beach House Restaurant will be serving deliciously summery and light dishes. The interior, in soft cream and sand shades, conjures up a pure vacation feel. The specialty restaurant Mamma Mia is also new, offering home-made pasta and fresh Italian cuisine with table service. The many public amenities include the Theatrium, shops, a disco, a gym area, the lavish Body & Soul Organic Spa, and the clubs for tiny tots, kids and teens.

During the development and design of this class of ship, German cruise line AIDA Cruises and the shipyard focussed strongly on energy efficiency. Part from being equipped with low emission LNG engines, heat recovery, innovative electric motors, LED lighting, biocide-free underwater coatings for drag reduction and weight optimization in the selection of materials are just a few of the measures taken to make the ship as environmentally friendly as possible.

In the coming weeks the interior outfitting of AIDAcosma will be completed. The ship will then embark on the Ems passage to complete the technical and nautical sea trials.

AIDAnova and AIDAcosma are 37 meters longer than their previously commissioned sister ships AIDAprima and AIDAperla. The bed capacity has increased to 5.464 guest beds with double occupancy. Compared to the AIDAperla, this is an increase of 2.178 beds.

AIDAcosma offers 2.732 cabins and suites. Guests can choose from 21 cabin variants. The offer ranges from the single inside cabin with ten square meters to the five-person penthouse suite with a size of 73 square meters and a 20 square meter veranda.

The cabins are tastefully decorated and homely; there is enough storage space. Red or blue tones are the dominant color tones. The size of the bathrooms within the standard categories is sufficient. In cabins with a walk-in closet, which we used, the wet cells are smaller due to the design.

Standard cabin guests, on the other hand, only see their cabin steward once a day. This service, which is limited compared to well-known competitors, does not appear to cause any problems for loyal AIDA customers.

Gastronomy – Food on board the AIDAcosma

A cruise ship with more than 5.000 guests inevitably offers a variety of dining options. The AIDAcosma has a total of 17 restaurants and snack bars. On the ship, the shipping company definitely practices what it advertises: "enjoyment for advanced users". Compared to the older AIDA ships, the extended range of restaurants on the AIDAcosma is a significant step forward. And the quality of the food is to be commended.

There are three restaurant categories:

Buffet restaurants

The following generally applies to AIDA buffet restaurants: food and some drinks are included in the cruise price. Coffee, beer and wine specialties are served at an additional cost. Seat reservations are not possible.

The Bella Donna is Italian. If you use the spacious restaurant, which seats around 800 people, you won't make a mistake.

That up AIDAcosma The restaurant introduced for the first time advertises its light, summery cuisine. The Beach House can accommodate a maximum of 110 guests. The show kitchen delivers dishes named after well-known international port cities. At the Beach House we were reminded of restaurants in Florida. In fact, AIDA Cruises locates the restaurant in coastal regions of California.

Visually, the restaurant is an asset to the ship. Unfortunately, the restaurant is in a transit area. Especially the guests placed in the aisle area have to put up with a lot of unrest. Incidentally, this also applies to other, smaller restaurants placed in passageways.

Notable bars and lounges on AIDAcosma

Sea voyages and a lot of free time promote thirst. The shipping company speaks of 17 bars and lounges on board the AIDAcosma. We didn't count them. Some speak to us; others less. But as we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We present some of the bars divided by deck.

There are four bars on the 6th deck. It's them

  • Art Bar – a bar establishment embedded in the Art Gallery. We prefer the Art Bar for its mostly quiet atmosphere;
  • Cosma Bar – the central bar at the Theatrium. Cheers and hustle and bustle are guaranteed;
  • Rossini Bar – the appendage of the gourmet restaurant of the same name;
  • Tokyo Bar - It is located at the Sushi House.

They're on this deck

  • French Kiss Bar – French charm next to the French Kiss brasserie;
  • Lanai Bar - an attractive, wind-protected outdoor bar with awnings on the aft deck;
  • Loge 7 Bar – another bar in the vicinity of the Theatrium;
  • Rock Box Bar - Pub atmosphere with live music, mostly rock.

This deck is home to the following bars and cafes:

  • Café Mare - the coffee bar originates from a cooperation with Starbucks;
  • Ice bar – home-made ice cream and other items are available for a fee;
  • Vinothek - the elegant, somewhat chilled place for wine connoisseurs and lovers.

  • AIDA Bar - the proven star-shaped bar in the Beach Club (deck 17);
  • Pool Bar - facing the sun (deck 18).

Sport and wellness

Ships, whose number of passengers corresponds to the population of a small town, offer their guests a wide range of sports and wellness offers. There is not nearly enough space to present all the content in detail. We limit ourselves to the essentials.

The large gym on the 8th deck is excellently designed. Athletes can choose from more than 30 offers. A small selection: fitness checks, fitness courses, cardiovascular training, muscle building training, private training sessions, indoor cycling. Some of the courses and services are chargeable. The outdoor sports area with the fitness track, a large miniature golf course and a bouldering wall is also attractive. Around 120 bamboo bicycles are used on AIDAcosma for cycling excursions.

With the Racer and the Water Slide, AIDAnova has two remarkable water slides. The entrance to the water slides is on the 20th deck. The outlets are on the 17th deck.

The spacious sun decks deserve an appreciation. In addition to many loungers, there are cabanas for daydreaming and lounging on sea days with good weather.

AIDAcosma - sun deck with pool

The wellness area of the AIDAcosma measures more than 3.500 square meters. It is located forward on decks 7 and 8. Five different types of saunas, three jacuzzis, a fireplace room, a warming room called "tepidarium" and two private wellness suites are available. The more than 80 treatments offered are as diverse as the day is long. Remarkable are the limitation of the number of guests and the minimum age from 16 years. Which doesn't mean anything: During our visit to the spa, we met children in the spa.

The shipping company promises world-class entertainment in 360° format. This means above all the three-storey theatrium between decks 6 to 8. Other event areas are the Studio X, the Beach Club and the stage of the brewery. Entertainment formats specially developed for AIDA are the TV shows "Who knows something like that?" and "Who wants to be a millionaire?". The various entertainment options range from AIDA boccia all day to whiskey tasting.

The one that offers space for 1.100 guests Theatrium plays a key role in entertainment. The shipping company offers its guests a total of five shows over the course of the season.

High above the Theatrium, in the middle part of the AIDAcosma, on the 17th deck are the  AIDA Beach Club and on the 18th deck its gallery. During the day there is a relaxed beach atmosphere. In the evenings, the Beach Club turns into a party zone with live music, silent party and LED and laser shows.

The Cube , the exclusive lounge, bar and nightclub, is the only place on board where the partying goes on well into the night; a hotspot for night owls. During the day the club is a studio for cocktail and dance workshops. We cannot see The Cube as the club is still closed due to the Corona Pandemic in early April 2022.

Cruise ships are a suitable place to bring art to art lovers. A suitable means to an end is the  AIDA art gallery  on the 6th deck. For copyright reasons, we refrain from depicting the art objects.

It's on deck 7  On-board casino . The relatively small slot machine casino is moderately frequented on sea days and in the evenings. The size and visitor frequency cannot be compared to US ships by far.

AIDA cruise ships are family ships. On the AIDAcosma, children and young people are offered enough entertainment and activities. On deck 16 are the Mini Club, the Kids Club, the Fun Park Kids and the Teens' Wave Club.

AIDAcosma - Kids Pool

This is next to the Wave Club Game Center . The "Daddelbude" shines with various electronic games and finds fans among young and old.

Cruise ships are generally a thorn in the side of environmentalists. Above all, ships of the older generation are rightly classified as environmental pollution, since the burning of heavy fuel oil causes serious damage to the environment and health.

As far as this topic is concerned, the AIDAcosma and her sister ship AIDAnova are considered to be flagship ships for environmental protection and energy efficiency. The dual-fuel ship engines are operated 100 percent with LNG liquefied natural gas at sea and in port; provided it is available. When using LNG, emissions of particulate matter and sulfur oxides are largely avoided. The emission of nitrogen oxides and CO2 emissions are measurably reduced. The device for receiving shore power is also to be commended. Dark exhaust plumes above the chimney system are therefore not visible on AIDAcosma. Further technical improvements were made in the hydrodynamics of the underwater hull, heat recovery and water purification.

AIDAcosma tested cruise practice at the beginning of April 2022 on one of the 7-day “Metropolises from Hamburg” cruise scheduled before the ship’s christening. Port of departure and destination: Hamburg. The ship was steering Southampton , Le Havre and Zeebrugge at. The destination Rotterdam was cancelled. The trip was supported by AIDA Cruises. Our thanks go to the shipping company. With regard to our journalistic independence, we refer to the chapter “We are independent”.

With the last two new buildings AIDAnova and AIDAcosma, AIDA Cruises present what we believe to be the most successful cruise ships in the current fleet of 13 ships.

Like the AIDAnova, AIDAcosma is a further development of the AIDAprima and AIDAperla introduced in 2016 and 2017. Compared to the two predecessor ships, the ships of the Helios class have increased noticeably in size. Passengers should be able to accept more than 5.000 accompanying adults and many accompanying children during seasonal periods. And they should recognize that AIDA cruise ships are family ships by the shipping company's definition. We "cruised" together with 4.141 passengers, including around 1.300 children of all ages. The time on board gave us the opportunity to get to know AIDAcosma in detail. Our main impressions are:

The brand new ship is in excellent condition.

The cabin service, which is only offered once a day, should meet the needs of AIDA's regular customers. However, we would like to see our cabin steward twice a day.

The variety of restaurants and bars is remarkable and to be commended. There is nothing wrong with the quality and the taste of the food. The service in general also leaves nothing to be desired.

AIDAcosma - culinary delights

AIDAcosma - culinary delights

The range of entertainment, how could it be otherwise with AIDA Cruises, satisfies many tastes. From our point of view, there is a lack of qualitative musical entertainment. These may be late effects of the corona epidemic. We're used to better content from international ships, and we're happy to do without quiz shows.

AIDAcosma - Environment Theatrium

AIDAcosma - Environment Theatrium

AIDA Cruises advertises AIDAcosma as a family ship. And in fact, families with small children, parents and grandparents are not uncommon. We observe strange behavior from the parents. We cannot explain why unaccompanied small children are running around in the theater or other public areas at 23:30pm Unaccompanied small children in elevators or on bar stools are no exception. Children's screams fill the restaurants and bars. – When it comes to such behavior, we recommend that the shipping company follow the example of its English sister brand P&O Cruises. Children are also welcome there. After 18:00pm they only appear when accompanied by adults.

On the generously dimensioned ship there are no suitable retreats outside of your own cabin to escape the noise.

In times of the rampant omicron variant of the corona virus, we miss compliance with strict rules of conduct. It is true that masks are compulsory in public areas, and the capacities for maintaining distance are reduced in the restaurants. Self-service is standard at the buffets. Those responsible at AIDAcosma are of the opinion that there would only be brief meetings at the self-service buffets. We think that AIDA Cruises - as far as this is concerned - overestimates the consideration of fellow passengers.

Despite the negative points of criticism, we enjoyed our stay on the AIDAcosma. As a cruise ship, it sets standards in every respect.

new aida cruise ship

Pearl of the Mediterranean: the new AIDA cruise ship

After a protracted construction period, AIDA Cruises’ new ship, AIDAperla, is finally on the water. Boasting a new dual-fuel engine room, slender hull and foil-covered domes, the vessel was worth the wait, as Christian Schönrock, the group’s director of new builds, tells Ross Davies.

“Size creates space, and space creates individuality,” says Christian Schönrock, director of new builds at AIDA Cruises. He’s speaking to World Cruise Industry Review over the phone from his office in Germany. It’s an epigram that neatly encapsulates the design and construction of the latest addition to AIDA’s growing fleet of vessels, AIDAperla.

Christened in June 2017, AIDAperla is the Costa-owned brand’s 12th ship, following the introduction of sister vessel AIDAprima last year. Its impressive measurements include 125,000 gross tonnage, a length of 300.0m and width of 37.6m. The ship’s total capacity encompasses 3,300 passengers and 900 crew members.

As is often the case with builds of such size, AIDAperla’s origins can be traced back some way – almost a decade, in fact. “It really goes back to 2009, when we were starting to think about the future of cruising, and what the future of AIDA would look like,” says Schönrock. “I know everyone always talks about design starting from a blank canvas but, in this instance, it really was the case. It’s taken a while, but we put everything underneath the microscope and developed a completely new concept.”

Efficient fuel

A fundamental feature of the ‘future of cruising’ was – and still is – efficient fuel consumption and minimising environmental impact. AIDAperla has dual fuel engines, including a liquefied natural gas (LNG) option that can be provided portside. On the vessel’s introductory tour through the Mediterranean in June 2017 ahead of its christening in Palma de Mallorca, AIDAperla was supplied with LNG in Barcelona, where AIDA has struck a deal with the port authority to use its fuel facilities. At the time of writing, the cruise line is said to be in discussions with other ports in the region for similar arrangements, as it looks to dial down its emissions.

“We are one of the first groups to gravitate towards LNG, but there is no tank on board to store the fuel. So it has to be fed from the outside,” says Schönrock. In 2011, AIDA’s dual-fuel AIDAsol was the first vessel to use LNG, although only in port. Another notable green feature of the engine room is the incorporation of the Mitsubishi air lubrication system. The system covers the underside of the vessel with a carpet of fine air bubbles. These help to reduce the friction between the hull and water, saving energy and reducing fuel consumption by 7%, according to AIDA’s estimates. “We are the first commercial ship to have this air lubrication system installed,” says Schönrock. “It works very well.”

Difficult beginnings

Both AIDAperla and AIDAprima were built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries at its shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan. AIDA and Mitsubishi share a history dating back to the last decade, when the Japanese group took orders in 2004 from P&O Princess Cruises – AIDA’s previous owner before its acquisition by Carnival Group – for the Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess. When it came to tender responses for AIDAperla’s construction, Mitsubishi was first in line, says Schönrock, forking out $650 million in 2011 for the privilege.

“The team at Mitsubishi is not new to shipbuilding – or to us, for that matter – so the team took part in a lot of bidding processes to get the project,” he says. “It was a good fit for Mitsubishi, because, as an owner, we were able to give a clear idea of what we wanted. The company fought really hard to work with us.”

But the building process was not without its problems. Due to delays at the shipyard, completion of both AIDAprima and AIDAperla was a year overdue – taking three years in total from start to finish. Such was the holdup that in 2016, Mitsubishi CEO Shunichi Miyanaga was obliged to issue a galling public statement revealing the group had struggled with cost overruns and accrued losses exceeding $1.7 billion.

According to Schönrock, Mitsubishi drastically misjudged the job in hand: giving life to an entirely new prototype. This caused the planning process to overrun, and from there the group was forced to play catch-up.

“This ship was a real prototype with demanding specifications,” he says. “The shipyard underestimated the complexity of what was a super-modern project, and also underestimated the amount of time needed to develop the basic design for such a ship.

“Also, during construction, they realised that while they had done good jobs in the past, this was a real challenge. The experience of building a ship ten years ago doesn’t really compare to building a ship these days. It’s more complex. They weren’t ready.”

While the delay was “not ideal”, AIDA has ended up with “a really great product”, Schönrock says of the ship, which finally arrived in European waters in May 2017.

Under the hatch

In the engine room, AIDAperla makes use of a diesel-electric propulsion system, integrating three Caterpillar M 43 C diesel units and a Caterpillar M 46 DF dual-fuel marine engine. The ship can travel at speeds of up to 21.5kt.

Propulsion power is supplied by two Azipod thrusters from ABB, contributing to reduced noise, vibration and fuel consumption. Three funnel thrusters are also in place to allow easier manoeuvrability in port.

AIDAperla’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system was supplied by Danish group Novenco Marine & Offshore, which also worked on AIDAprima. This includes 71 air-handling units with frequency converter and enthalpy wheels; over 150 single fans; 130 electric motorpowered, ceiling-mounted fan coils; and 1,700 fan coils for passenger berths.

“For all the technical systems, the focus is on energy efficiency,” explains Schönrock. “So all systems are operated with frequency-controlled electric motors. We have analysis and support systems in order to better measure our consumption. For the air conditioning, we went through each and every system with Novenco, and discussed how we could improve them.”

AIDAperla is also conspicuous for its slender hull, which includes a perpendicular 261m-long bow. The hull was developed by Carnival, Mitsubishi and the Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute.

The ship’s design was undertaken by Partner Ship Design (PSD). Operating out of Hamburg, Germany, and run by senior partners Kai Bunge and Siegfried Schindler, PSD has worked with AIDA for over a decade on other vessels, so “instinctively knew exactly what we were after”, according to Schönrock.

Design inspiration

“I’d say the whole ship is an architectural innovation,” Schönrock says. “Right from the beginning, we’ve focused on having a close relationship with our architects, as we do with all our partners and clients. We developed ideas from scratch, really, directly together with Kai and Siegfried. So from the beginning, we were discussing with them the idea of optimising space. For this, we took inspiration from our current fleet, but we made a lot of changes.”

Schönrock cites the example of the public deck, situated amidships, and the introduction of more balcony cabins – AIDAperla has 1,643 cabins in total, spread over 18 decks. There’s an upper deck with several enclosed areas, as well as two pool areas covered by foil domes, allowing passengers the opportunity to take a dip in colder weather.

“With the upper deck, we have really created an outer landscape, alternating between indoors and outdoors,” says Schönrock. “Using foil domes instead of glass for the pool areas is also a world first. The flexibility of foil is also fantastic – you can create completely different rooms.”

It might have taken a little longer than hoped for AIDAperla to get past the drawing board at Mitsubishi’s shipyard. But with the new build having taken its maiden tour of the western Mediterranean, it appears to have been worth the wait.

“It’s taken a lot to design and to develop this product,” says Schönrock. “But we are very proud that it is working as we expected. It’s one thing designing something but it’s another thing for it to operate and work well. And, best of all, the passengers appreciate it.”

AIDAperla Review

new aida cruise ship

AIDAperla is a family-friendly ship designed for German passengers. The 3,286-passenger ship, which debuted in 2017, is loaded with features for kids and adults alike to share and enjoy. It's got an enormous waterpark play area, indoor/outdoor pool, and activities like ropes courses, mini-golf and a sports court. It also features a large number of restaurants and a huge spa complex. It has numerous bars and lounges, a busy entertainment/theater hub at the center of the ship and cabin categories to suit any need (with an emphasis on rooms that can accommodate at least four people).

About 95 percent of the passengers on AIDAperla are German-speaking, with most coming from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. All signs and menus, entertainment, shore excursions and announcements are in German. (Only important announcements, involving safety drills and embarkation/disembarkation instruction, are in German and English.) Crew speak German and English.

Passengers are generally young families, especially during the summer and holiday seasons. You'll find a number of multigenerational families onboard, with grandparents, parents and children, along with a fair number of grandparents traveling with their grandchildren while mom and dad stay home.

Passengers tend to be appreciative of the ship's laid-back vibe, which is heavy on fun and light on formality.

AIDAperla is designed for Germans and German speakers, so passengers who don't speak German or aren't comfortable on a ship created for a European passenger base should honestly consider whether the ship is the right fit for them.

AIDAperla has a large number of cabins, ranging from the 172-square-foot inside cabin to a 1,238-square-foot suite. Many cabins accommodate at least four people. (While the double-occupancy capacity is 3,286 passengers, you might find your sailing has significantly more passengers because so many cabins accommodate more than two people.) All cabins include two twin beds that can be combined to form a European king-sized bed, canopy, TV, desk, bathroom with shower (some bathrooms feature a separate water closet), telephone and hair dryer. Balconies include a cool hammock that can be stretched across to enjoy some reading or snoozing.

While cabins are comfortable and relatively spacious, amenities are somewhat bare-bones when compared with what you might expect when sailing lines more traditionally targeted toward North American passengers. Beds lack top-sheets, and washcloths are nowhere to be found. Cabins don't have refrigerators or vanities. The tradeoff is plenty of storage space and room to walk and lounge comfortably -- especially in balcony cabins, which feature full-sized couches.

Junior suites and above come with a nice roundup of perks, including discounts at the spa, exclusive dining experiences, priority check-in. Suites further get access to the AIDA Lounge, an oasis away from the daily hustle and bustle; this lounge has indoor and outdoor seating, snacks, drinks (wine, water, soft drinks and some spirits), games and a concierge, who can handle virtually any need.

Five of the restaurants on AIDAperla are buffet-style, and these are by far the most popular. Most are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (but check your daily schedule to make sure). For the most part, these restaurants serve up German favorites and comfort food. That might include various pasta and meat dishes, potatoes, pickled fish, cold cuts and cheese. They also feature salad bars and dessert selections. Wine, beer and soft drinks are included in these venues at lunch and dinner, and people begin lining up for meals about 15 minutes before the restaurants open; they also tend to linger -- especially at dinner -- so finding seating can be difficult.

The biggest buffet is Markt, which features the most variety of food and seating, with options indoors and out. East is the ship's Asian buffet restaurant, and it includes a Mongolian-style grill as well as a Pho soup station. Other buffet options are Bella Donna, Fuego and Weite Welt.

The ship also has three for-fee specialty restaurants: Rossini, Sushi and the Steakhouse by Tim Malzer. These three are lesser visited than the buffet restaurants, but reservations are still encouraged. Rossini is a farm-to-table gourmet option priced a la carte, though there is also a six-course set-price chef's menu.

AIDAperla has three restaurants that are free with the purchase of a drink. French Kiss offers French dishes, like escargot, consomme and duck. It's also open for a sit-down breakfast, when it's usually got plenty of seating. Make reservations for dinner. Tapas is a Spanish-style restaurant serving small plates of items like grilled octopus, honey-soaked chorizo and cheese-stuffed peppers, along with Spanish beers and sangria. For an authentic German beerhall experience, visit Brauhaus, a huge venue that offers bench seating at long tables. This spot features the ship's onboard brewery and a large selection of beers. It's open on sea days for lunch, when it offers dishes like roast chicken and sausage. For dinner, there's schnitzel, goulash and roast duck. This venue is hopping until late, with entertainment beginning after dinner, flowing beer and group singing.

The ship also has some snack spots, like a curry wurst "food truck" and a build-your-own Magnum ice cream bar shop. There is no main dining room on AIDAperla.

AIDAperla offers a good variety of bars and lounges. Spaces tend to be quiet during the day and heat up late into the evening. Passengers at all AIDAperla venues must be 16 years old to drink beer, 18 to drink wine and 21 to drink spirits.

A favorite spot onboard is the Brauhaus, which serves food in the evening, then turns into an entertainment hotspot at night. The bar has a stage, and it will host events like karaoke and dancing. It's not unusual for passengers to stand on benches and sing along, a la Oktoberfest-style celebrations. The bar has an excellent selection of beers, including three brewed onboard.

Another fun spot is the Nightfly nightclub, which hosts some entertainment -- and this comes with a small cover charge. Shows, which are open to adults only, have lots of options, with themes like "Paris, My Love" and "Close to You." The Beach Club, an indoor/outdoor pool space, hosts late-night parties with DJs and live bands.

The heart of the ship's activities take place in the innovative Beach Club, which has an indoor/outdoor pool. The space is covered by a glass roof that can be opened (it also allows in UV light), and has lots of lounge chairs. The pool stretches to the outside space, where there is additional seating in lounge chairs and the like. Families spend lots of time here, especially in the climate-controlled comfort of the indoors.

The ship also features a lazy river, water play area, waterslides and ropes courses, along with mini-golf, Ping-Pong and a sports court. Stadium seating allows parents to watch their kids play, though many jump in along with their kids.

The ship features a tiny, lightly used casino, along with numerous shops featuring designer brands and logo items.

The ship's main theater is called the "Theatrium," which is part theater, part atrium. Unlike traditional cruise ship theaters, which are enclosed and generally found at the front of ships, this one is smack-dab in the middle of the action. It also features no walls, so passengers just walking by can pause to take in the action. The stage itself is circular, and seating is in the round. It spans three decks, and passengers can watch the action on the stage or sit in booths and nooks nearby while watching on TVs. Entertainment takes place here throughout the day, and passengers drop by and leave as they please.

Programming onboard includes activities like bingo, spa, flower design and art workshops, and sessions on cocktail making and winetasting.

The Body & Soul Spa on AIDAperla is a popular spot on the ship. The highlight is the enormous thermal suite area, which includes sun loungers, hot tubs, ceramic lounge chairs, sun beds, water beds, steam rooms and saunas. For a fee, passengers can book the spa by the hour, half-day, day or full cruise. The sauna area is strictly natürlich -- clothing isn't permitted here. But bathing suits are fine in the rest of the spa. Two spa suites are available for rental; here, passengers can indulge in hot tubs, water beds, sauna and lounge chairs -- in private. Treatment rooms are available, where therapists provide massages, facials, scrubs and the like. A separate salon offers hair and nail treatments.

The fitness center also is large and decked-out with the latest cardio and weight equipment. It's also fairly busy throughout the day (except early in the morning). Fitness classes, like spinning and yoga, are offered throughout the day.

This ship is designed for families, from cabins that accommodate four-plus, to waterslides and ropes courses, and programming. Families are common onboard, and they tend to stick together, despite solid kids clubs with fun programming. AIDAperla offers entertainment aimed specifically at families during the day at the ship's theater; it's not uncommon to see parents cheering for AIDA mascot, Dodo, alongside their kids. Kids clubs offer workshops, fitness programming, cinema nights, video games and crafting. Childcare is also available for children aged 3 to 17.

new aida cruise ship

Unless another court ruling overturns Bar Harbor’s new cruise ship limits, 2025 is expected to be the last year that large passenger ships drop anchor in Frenchman Bay.

But it could be sooner than that — or may have already passed — if a judge decides that the town must enforce the new limits this year.

“Large” can be a relative term when the smallest cruise ships that visit Bar Harbor are more than 200 feet long and can accommodate 100 paid passengers. Most of the ships that visit Bar Harbor, Maine’s busiest cruise ship port, are closer to 1,000 feet long and carry between 1,800 and 4,000 passengers per voyage.

It is these larger ships that effectively will be banned from visiting the tourist destination when the town’s new daily limit of 1,000 passengers per day  starts being enforced. Of Bar Harbor’s current 104 cruise ship visits scheduled for this year, 70 would be prohibited if the daily limit was to go into effect before May 2, when the first large ship of the year, carrying nearly 2,400 passengers, is expected to arrive.

Of the ships that will still be allowed, most carry approximately 100 to 200 passengers and rarely do two of them appear in Bar Harbor on the same day. As a result, the town most likely will get only a couple hundred passengers ashore on cruise ship days — below the daily 1,000-passenger limit and far below the 2,000 to 5,000 passengers that have sometimes come ashore when multiple ships are in town at the same time.

new aida cruise ship

But when the new limit will be fully enforced is a heated subject of debate  in Bar Harbor, where the council says it will honor reservations made by large ships before voters approved the new limits on Nov. 8, 2022. Charles Sidman , a local resident who spearheaded the referendum vote, is taking the town to court to try to legally compel it to enforce the cap now.

In addition, a coalition of local businesses is challenging the new daily limit in federal court, arguing that it runs counter to federal maritime law and is unfairly onerous. A federal judge upheld the new daily limit  in February, but the business group has said it intends to appeal the decision.

Regardless of which entity prevails in court, the number of annual cruise ship visits to Bar Harbor, which gets millions of visitors each year who arrive each year by car or bus, already is declining and likely will never regain the volume of recent years.

Outside the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 — when the global cruise ship industry ground to a halt and no ships came to Bar Harbor  — the town recently has averaged roughly 150 visits each year, all between late April and early November, and received an annual total between 200,000 and 250,000 passengers. This year, even if large ships are allowed, the town will get fewer than 200,000 passengers for the first time — apart from 2020 and 2021 — since 2016.

new aida cruise ship

After cruise ships first started showing up sporadically off Bar Harbor in the 1980s, their numbers jumped above 50 per year in 2001 and then above 100 per year in 2008. The town’s first year with more than 100,000 cruise ship passengers was in 2004, when it welcomed 87 ships into Frenchman Bay.

Along the way, the town has worked with local cruise industry officials to find ways to manage the flow of passengers to and from the downtown waterfront. It moved anchorage points in the bay behind the Porcupine Islands to make the ships less visually imposing from downtown, and tried making adjustments to how tour buses come and go from West Street to relieve traffic congestion, even as the number of visits consistently increased over time.

But as complaints continued to come in, the town decided in 2021 — when annual visits to Acadia National Park soared to more than 4 million  — to conduct a survey to ask local people what they thought about local cruise ship traffic. More than half  of the survey’s respondents said the volume of cruise ship visits was hurting the town.

With the writing on the wall, both town officials and local cruise industry officials began discussing how to reduce the number  of large ships that visit each year.

Together, they came up with a plan to impose a daily passenger cap of 3,800 passengers for May, June, September and October, and a daily cap of 3,500 for July and August. They also agreed on monthly caps of 30,000 passengers in May and June, 40,000 in July and August, and 65,000 in September and October.

But Sidman’s 2022 citizens’ petition effort, which led to the November referendum that year, derailed that plan.

For now, with Bar Harbor officials saying they plan to honor large cruise ship reservations made prior to the November 8, 2022 vote, the number of visits scheduled for 2025 stands at 18, all of which are large ships that together would bring nearly 57,000 ship passengers to town between late August and early October. The Regal Princess, which carries 3,560 passengers, would be the final large ship to visit Bar Harbor, on Oct. 28, 2025.

All large ship reservation requests that have come in since residents approved the daily 1,000-passenger cap have been denied, according to town officials.

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

AIDA Cruises bids farewell to its AIDAaura ship

CruiseMapper logo

After an illustrious two-decade tenure in AIDA's fleet, encompassing 800+ voyages spanning the world's most captivating regions, AIDA Cruises has bid a fond farewell to the AIDAaura .

This departure is marked by a mixture of nostalgia and appreciation, as the entire fleet acknowledges the ship's significant contributions, having explored more of the planet than any other vessel within their ranks.

Over her remarkable career, affectionately known as "the little one," the AIDAaura has graciously hosted approximately 1 million guests and crew members. Each of them carries cherished memories of their time on board, whether it be the breathtaking Mediterranean sunsets, exhilarating whale-watching adventures in the Pacific, or the joy of dancing beneath the starlit Atlantic skies.

Nonetheless, as the adage goes, all good things must eventually conclude. With a heartfelt "AURAvoir" and sincere expressions of gratitude, the crew and all those fortunate enough to have experienced this remarkable vessel bid their farewells.

Boris Henn, Entertainment Manager at AIDA, shared his final farewell to AIDAaura on social media:

"It's the last call. Time to say goodbye… AIDAaura arrived in Bremerhaven this morning for the very last time. I'm going to miss you, old lady. So many incredible memories. Great people. Amazing times. Thank you! Wishing smooth sailing for your future crew and guests under a new name and a new flag."

This major cruise line operator just announced its biggest ship order ever

new aida cruise ship

One of the world’s leading cruise operators unveiled its biggest ship order ever on Monday.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. will take delivery of eight ships between 2026 and 2036 across its three brands.

Norwegian Cruise Line will welcome four ships in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, each with a capacity of close to 5,000 guests. The additions are subject to financing.

The vessels will follow the line’s previously announced Prima-Plus class vessels.

The upscale Oceania Cruises will take delivery of two 1,450-guest ships in 2027 and 2029, and luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises will add two ships in 2026 and 2029, each accommodating 850 passengers.

"This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” Harry Sommer, the company’s president and CEO, said in a news release . “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

Specifics about the ships’ accommodations and amenities will be announced “in the coming months,” according to the release.

The company will also add a new multi-ship pier at its private Bahamas island, Great Stirrup Cay, scheduled for completion by late 2025. The pier will be able to accommodate two large ships at once.

This cruise company just ordered 8 new ships — and thinks other lines will, too

Ashley Kosciolek

Despite a recent surge in cruise popularity , the number of new cruise ships under construction is set to taper off after 2024. However, one company plans to keep building them and has indicated other lines will likely follow suit.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings — which operates Norwegian Cruise Line , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises — has placed an order for eight new vessels across its three brands, all scheduled to begin sailing between 2026 and 2036. The ships will be part of brand-new ship classes for each of their respective lines. The ships will be built by the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

A competitive advantage

new aida cruise ship

During a special call to announce the new ships, NCLH executives said they placed the orders early because it gives them plenty of time to plan and because they believe other cruise companies are also considering new ships.

"We see the future, we think this is the right strategic direction to go in, the spots are available, and obviously, we want to secure them before the competition does," Harry Sommer, president and CEO of NCLH, said during the call. "We certainly believe that the competitive set will be ordering ships as well."

"Our friends at the other four companies that are regularly ordering ships, they are, to the best of our knowledge, all in advanced talks with shipyards to get ships," Sommer said.

He expressed the importance of being at "the front of the line" to provide the advantage of more time to design a quality product for cruise guests.

"There are only four shipyards in the world that can build ships of any consequential size," Mark Kempa, NCLH's executive vice president and chief financial officer, said. "As the industry continues to build, we have to be more strategic in nature and make sure we have the opportunity to build. It also gives us the time and ability to really design something that is new and innovative for the brand."

Larger ships mean larger profits — and more expenses

new aida cruise ship

Norwegian Cruise Line will see four new ships, set to debut in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036. Each will carry about 5,000 passengers, making them the largest vessels in the line's fleet by nearly 20%. Details about onboard features have not yet been released. However, Sommer said the vessels will combine the best offerings from the line's Breakaway and Prima Class ships .

Ship sizes will also increase for upscale lines Regent and Oceania, which will see two new ships each. Regent will welcome two 850-passenger vessels in 2026 and 2029. Oceania will add two ships that can carry around 1,450 cruisers in 2027 and 2029. Oceania will continue to focus on serving excellent food, while Regent will focus on a higher level of luxury and even more onboard space per passenger.

The reason for NCLH's increase in ship sizes is simple: The larger the ship, the more cabin types it can offer and the more revenue it will generate.

"New ships always garner a premium," Kempa said. "A lot of it is dependent upon ... the premium cabin mix. As the ships get larger and technology improves, we are able to have a better overall cabin mix on each of the new vessels."

With larger ships also come larger costs, especially with the increase in the price of raw materials. Executives aren't worried, though; they cited being operationally strategic and optimistic that cruisers will continue to shell out for extras when they sail.

"It's not just about the cost of the ship; it's also about how we're operating it," Kempa said. "Yes, the cost of steel is more, but we can build the ship at a better cost in terms of value engineering, not necessarily having everything as fancy as maybe it needs to be but putting the value into the ship where it matters — where the customer is willing to pay and what the customer values."

Sommer shared the company's positivity about American consumers. "They value what we offer," Sommer said. "Our product is made to suit their needs and tastes, and they spend a lot of money on board the ships."

Norwegian Cruise Line's next decade in ships

new aida cruise ship

Presently, Norwegian Cruise Line sails 19 ships. Nearly half of them — Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Jewel, Pride of America, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Star, Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Spirit — will reach their 30th year in service within the decade it will take to debut the four newly ordered NCL vessels.

It may be easy to assume NCLH is simply looking ahead to what it might need in 10 years when several of its current vessels will be what is considered old for cruise ships. However, the company's executives said there are no current plans for vessels to leave the fleet. In fact, Kempa noted that they expect their vessels to have an operating life of up to 40 years.

"We're fortunate in the fact that we have a very young fleet, especially for the Norwegian brand," Kempa said. "As our fleets continue to age, we invest in them in a rational, disciplined manner to make sure that they stay relevant. As they age down the road, we will look at opportunities for redeploying those vessels to either other markets or other alternative players throughout the globe, but we have no near-term plans for any sort of disposals or any sort of retirements on that front."

Sommer shared his optimism about the path ahead. "We believe we are very well poised for continued growth in the next decade and beyond," he said.

Private island plans

new aida cruise ship

In addition to building new ships, NCLH announced a $150 million plan to add a two-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, one of two private island destinations it operates. Construction is slated to begin this summer, with an estimated completion date of late 2025. The new facility would accommodate ships as large as NCL's aforementioned 5,000-passenger vessels.

Because the port doesn't currently have a pier, passengers must ferry ashore via tender boats. As such, calls on Great Stirrup Cay are often weather-dependent, and they're subject to cancellation if the wind is too strong or the waves too rough.

"We already have quite a bit built out — zip lines, cabanas, spa, private beach, all types of water sport activities ... people really enjoy that," Sommer shared. "I think when they have the confidence that we're going to go there 100% of the time, we will see a further improvement in the incremental yields that we get today."

Sommer said there are no immediate plans to add amenities to Great Stirrup Cay. Instead, the focus is on building the docking facilities, which are expected to increase the number of visitors to the island by 50% in the first year (from 400,000 passengers annually to 600,000). However, when additions are made, they will likely be amenities or experiences that will cost visitors extra.

"I don't think we're looking at substantial investments over the next few years," Sommer said. "I think there are things we can do that are very cost-effective and would be supported by guests paying additional money for them."

The 10 Biggest Cruise Ships in the World

Where to float on the biggest boats.

E very vessel that's once held the title of "biggest cruise ship" has one thing in common: It is a destination in and of itself. Of course, these enormous passenger cruise ships also transport guests to thrilling ports, exotic islands and remote locations too. It's almost as if you could live on a cruise ship !

These massive ships each have so much going on: theater and music on a multitude of stages, water slides, roller coasters and go-kart tracks, zip lines, ice skating rinks, laser tag arenas—you name it. There are also hidden cruise features waiting to be discovered and more restaurants than you will ever need to feed yourself. They are, simply put, awe-inspiring creations. Have you ever thought about how cruise ships float ?

One of the most important cruise tips for vacationing on one of these big boats is to accept that you won't be able to do it all on your first visit. Thankfully, with many itineraries to choose from, you can sail on the largest cruise ship again and again, learn cruise ship code words and have new experiences every single time you're on board one of these massive ships.

What is largest cruise ship in the world?

The current reigning champion is Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas. But next year, there will be a brand-new biggest cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas . Planned with 20 decks, 2,805 staterooms, seven pools and nine hot tubs, the future largest ship in the world is currently being built in Finland. Here are the details about the biggest and grandest ships to sail on.

Wonder of the Seas

Cruise line: Royal Caribbean

Length: 1,188 feet

Width: 215 feet

Guest capacity: 7,084

A true wonder, the current biggest ship in the world delights guests every week with a feast of activities, shows, meals and memories. Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , an Oasis-class ship that is a city at sea, has 16 guest decks, 2,204 crew members from every corner of the planet and more than 10 bars and 20 dining destinations—nine of which are complimentary. Curiously, even though the Icon of the Seas will eventually take the mantle as the largest cruise ship, Wonder will still have more staterooms than its new big sister, a whopping 2,867 of them.

It also features a carousel on a real boardwalk, a dry slide that twists down 10 decks, surfing simulators, a laser tag arena, an ice skating rink and a zip line that spans the interior width of the ship. It also has interior rooms with balconies that look out over the restaurant and a tree-lined neighborhood that looks like Central Park. Wonder of the Seas will soon lose its crown as the biggest cruise ship in the world, but it'll never lose its ability to provide unique vacations thanks to affordable cruises for every kind of traveler.

World Europa

Cruise line: MSC

Length: 1,093 feet

Width: 154 feet

Guest capacity: 6,762

MSC is not only a privately held shipping company, the largest in the world, they are also the maker of some of the largest cruise ships in the world. The World Europa , which took to the sea for the first time in 2022, is currently escorting passengers all over the Mediterranean, using one of the cleanest marine fuels to do so.

The World Europa features some of the best rooms on a cruise ship, thanks to having the most cabins with a balcony. It also has the world's longest dry slide at sea, taking adventurous cruisers down 12 decks in a shiny, twisting stainless steel tube, and bumper cars in a SportsPlex arena that also hosts rollerblading—not at the same time, however. People looking for something a little less dramatic will enjoy six pools, some surrounded by tropical greenery, 14 whirlpools and MSC's first-ever department store at sea. Finally, you'll never go hungry on this ship , given its 10 restaurants, including four main dining rooms and three buffets.

Cruise line: P&O Cruises

Length: 1,130 feet

Width: 138 feet

Guest capacity: 6,685

Whether you want the sunshine of the Caribbean or the culture found in and around Mediterranean ports, Arvia is P&O's largest cruise ship and one of the biggest cruise ships in the world, with 1,800 crew members, a three-screen cinema complex, a wide range of staterooms to choose from and four pools, including an infinity pool with a swim-up bar. There are also nearly two dozen whirlpool spas, a sauna, steam room and a hydrotherapy pool.

This means that whether you're taking a singles cruise or have children in tow—the Arvia is a family-friendly ship with age-specific kids clubs on board—serious rest and relaxation are definitely on the agenda. Then, when you're feeling spry and ready for some adventure during your vacation at sea, you can try an escape room or ropes course, play in the sports arena or strut your stuff in a dance class.

Costa Toscana

Cruise line: Costa Cruises

Length: 1,105 feet

Width: 137 feet

Guest capacity: 6,600

A sister to the Smeralda , the Costa Toscana became the fleet's largest cruise ship when it took to the water in March 2022. The ship uses LNG propulsion engines to make sea travel more sustainable, both while cruising and in ports of call around the world. An international crew of 1,678 works to deliver dream vacations for up to 6,600 passengers who will love to discover all there is to do, see and experience on board.

The ship has 1,550 staterooms ranging from interior cabins to elaborate suites, a baker's dozen pools and whirlpools, and a total of 20 restaurants, bars and lounges. Costa's new flagship vessel is a smart city at sea, offering subtly high-tech sailings that provide fun for the whole family, thanks to Peppa Pig character parties, an aqua park with water slides and a mind-bending skywalk 213 feet above the ocean! So book a vacation on one of the largest cruise ships in the world, then pack your cruise ducks and your appetite for learning how to cook at Toscana 's Food LAB cooking school, among other adventures at sea.

Celebration

Cruise line: Carnival

Guest capacity: 6,631

As cruise lines jockey for position at the top of the biggest cruise ship in the world leaderboard, the original family-fun ships are also getting larger. A total of 1,735 international crew, famously considered the best in the business, will ensure that every family's cruise on the Celebration not only maximizes the fun but also the memories, and all at some of the most affordable prices in the cruise industry.

This ship has BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, Dr. Seuss children's themed cruises with character appearances, and incredible water parks with multiple slides. Delicious food is made fast-and-fresh at Guy's Burger Joint, Shaq's Big Chicken and the Seafood Shack, as well as tasty street-food carts located near the pools. Plus, with all the extra space on the largest cruise ship in their fleet, Carnival's Playlist Productions has more stages to dazzle you and your kids with famously fantastic live music and musical theater.

Cruise line: Norwegian

Length: 1,094 feet

Width: 136 feet

Guest capacity: 3,998

With 1,700 crew members and more than 2,000 staterooms, including suites in The Haven—Norwegian's luxurious, private and tranquil ship-within-a-ship concept high atop the ship, which comes with 24-hour butler service and its own lavish sundeck—the Encore ranks among the largest cruise ships in the world. Curiously, this vessel from 2019 is still the largest in the Norwegian fleet! Both Prima  and the forthcoming Viva were built after Encore but are considerably smaller in size, bucking the cruise industry trend of "bigger is better."

Encore shines as a superior and super big ship, the fourth in the Breakaway Plus class, and features a multi-deck go-kart track, the Cavern Club music venue, fashioned after the famous Liverpool room where The Beatles became big, a virtual-reality gaming room, an outdoor laser-tag arena and some of the best food at sea. No doubt, this will become one of every passenger's favorite cruises.

Symphony of the Seas

Width: 216 feet

Guest capacity: 6,680

None of the many all-inclusive cruises take place on the largest cruise ships, but you may be forgiven for thinking you're enjoying an all-inclusive experience on Symphony of the Seas . The ship's many spectacular activities include a zip line that soars above the boardwalk many decks below, an old-fashioned carousel, Broadway-style theater shows, surfing simulators and the 10-story Abyss dry slide. There's also delicious food all over the ship that is 100% complimentary. And while you may fly on the zip line over and over again, you'll probably still wonder, Why do cruise ships have wings ?

After its maiden voyage in April 2018, Symphony was the biggest cruise ship in the world. But because of its ingenious neighborhood concept, guests rarely feel overcrowded. Seven distinct areas carve up the ship into unique spaces to play, eat, stroll, sleep and enjoy live entertainment, and the traffic flows brilliantly to make passengers feel as though they're on a more intimate ship and not cruising with upward of 6,680 other people in more than 2,700 staterooms, some of which are interior cabins with balconies that boast views of the Central Park neighborhood's greenery and eateries.

Cruise line: AIDA

Guest capacity: 6,654

While American travelers looking to cruise the Caribbean may not encounter her, the AIDAnova is not only the largest cruise ship in the AIDA fleet, she's also a revolutionary lady. The ship's Four Elements adventure deck, with its three water slides and climbing garden under the dome of a retractable glass roof, drops jaws on every sailing. The ship's more than 2,600 staterooms with 20 different types, ranging from a glorious two-deck penthouse to budget-friendly interior cabins, allow guests to sleep well and arrive in port well rested, and the two-deck spa offering 80 different treatments provides even more healing and luxury.

But AIDAnova is also impressive because it made history as the world's first cruise ship to be powered in port and at sea by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the world's cleanest burning fossil fuel. It's important that big ships can be more sustainable, but did you ever wonder why there are big balls on cruise ships ?

Sun Princess

Cruise line: Princess

Length: 1,133 feet

Guest capacity: 4,300

The Love Boat is getting much, much bigger! Yes, this is the namesake ship from the beloved '70s TV show. With 2,150 cabins, the Sun Princess is close to carrying 4,300 passengers to Europe for its inaugural season later this year. And then all around the world, people will be asking, "Why do cruise ships have to stop in Canada?"

The third ship in the history of the fleet to be graced with the iconic name, the S un Princess is poised to be a fan favorite. There are more than 29 bars, lounges and restaurants on board, with the Sea View Terrace and Bar ensconced in glass at the top and front of the ship, book-ended by the Wake View Terrace at the back, which has a stunning infinity pool hanging off the edge. Drawing inspiration from the tiered terraces of Santorini, Greece, this evocative area will have an indoor/outdoor pool to enjoy supreme relaxation during the day. But once the sun says goodbye, the pool becomes a stage and the dome above transforms into an entertainment venue with eye-popping lighting effects.

Length: 1,085 feet

Width: 141 feet

Guest capacity: 6,334

Come June 2023, one of the newest and biggest cruise ships at sea will be carrying eager pasengers, and more than 1,700 dedicated crew members, to world-class destinations in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. While on board the Euribia , cruisers will enjoy a massive amount of personal space (100-plus square feet per person) at any one of five unique pools, including one of the most intricate waterparks at sea, covering more than 10,000 square feet.

These watery areas of rest, relaxation and revelry will comfortably accommodate more than 1,000 guests at a time. Indoors, a 360-foot-long Mediterranean-style promenade is lined with myriad shops, along with some of the 20 bars and 10 restaurants found on the ship. It also features a domed LED screen that magically displays the sky and other animations throughout the day and night. MSC continues to be a favorite cruise line of environmentalist travelers looking to ease their mind and minimize their footprint, as the Euribia has an advanced onboard wastewater treatment system that doesn't allow any water to leave the ship without being treated and cleaned.

News Release

Aidamar opens 2024 season in warnemünde: big party at the cruise quay.

Next Sunday, April 14, 2024, AIDAmar will open this year's cruise season in Warnemünde. The Baltic seaside resort in the north is the home port for AIDA Cruises, the market leader in the German cruise industry based in Rostock and is therefore a special port of call for the Kussmund fleet. AIDAmar and AIDAdiva will make a total of 69 calls this year from April 14 to November 4. This means that almost half of all cruise calls in Warnemünde during the 2024 season will be made by AIDA ships. AIDAmar in particular will be calling at Warnemünde regularly this year - a total of 40 times during this year's cruise season. AIDA guests can set sail for Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Poland or discover the Baltic and Scandinavian countries on either 3- to 5-day or 7- to 12-day voyages. AIDAdiva makes 29 calls during the season. AIDAdiva departs from Warnemünde on 7-day voyages to Norway, but also to Sweden, Poland, Denmark, Finland and Estonia. In October, there is a 4- and 5-day trip to Scandinavia. Special tours are the 12-day trips to the Baltic States to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland and Sweden. A special highlight in 2024 that cruise fans should definitely make a note of: Both ships will dock in Warnemünde at the same time a total of five times. This concerns the calls on June 8, July 6, August 24, September 21 and October 31, 2024.

AIDA season highlights 2024 in Warnemünde

AIDA Cruises is also involved in several events in Warnemünde in 2024: During the Hanse Sail (August 8-11), AIDAmar (August 9) and AIDAdiva (August 10) will be on site. AIDA Cruises is a sponsor of the largest maritime event in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which attracts up to one million visitors every year. At the Rostock Cruise Festival in September, which AIDA also supports as a sponsor, both AIDA ships will even be on site at the same time on September 21. Other events include the Rostock Chamber of Industry and Commerce Fair on April 18, 2024, where prospective trainees can find out about apprenticeships from around 90 companies in the region in the form of speed dating on AIDAmar, and a children's concert will take place on AIDAmar on October 17 as part of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.

Shore power in Warnemünde

For AIDA Cruises, the use of shore power is an important contribution to reducing the ships' local emissions. This is because it allows the cruise ships' main engines to be switched off while they are docked and the on-board systems to be supplied with energy from shore. Nine out of eleven AIDA ships are currently shore power capable, including all ships in the AIDA fleet that will be setting off on cruises to the North and Baltic Seas from German ports this summer. For the port in Warnemünde, this means that shore power is planned for all 69 calls by AIDAdiva and AIDAmar, even on the dates when both ships are in port. The first double supply took place last year: On April 16, 2023, AIDA Cruises celebrated a special premiere with the double call of AIDAsol and AIDAmar in Rostock-Warnemünde, as both ships were connected to the shore-side system in parallel for the first time. Germany is a pioneer in Europe when it comes to the provision of shore-side power. Europe's first shore-side power plant in Hamburg Altona has been in regular operation since 2017. This was followed in 2021 by Kiel and Rostock-Warnemünde, whose systems were also opened with an AIDA ship.

Cruise tip for the weekend: Big party to kick off the season this weekend

The season opening on April 14, 2024 with AIDAmar will be celebrated with a big party around the Rostock-Warnemünde cruise terminal: Together with the traditional ship Santa Barbara Anna, a three-master, AIDAmar will create a real seafaring atmosphere. The port party on the central pier starts at 11 am. The festive highlight will be the "cast off" of AIDAmar in the evening, accompanied by music, on its way to Gotland and Stockholm.
